Re: [Talk-transit] Summary of Public Transport Proposal Criticism - a real example from Zürich
On 02/08/2011 09:17 PM, Dominik Mahrer (Teddy) wrote: Here we're getting into one of the uglier parts of transport mapping - large terminals (amenity=bus_station) with multiple stop positions and platforms. I deliberately left that out of the proposal I presented (my plan is to present that as a later extension). Do you have an idea how it will look like? Well, a rough one: So far we've had amenity=bus_station tagged as a node or area for the whole thing - I think this makes sense to keep. In many cases buses have a fixed platform at which they stop. Hence, we need * a node/area for each platform/boarding position * a tag which designates it as such (some candidates are already in use) * a name or ref (where one exists on the ground) Then, we need some way to associate the platforms with the bus station: * if the bus station is mapped as an area, platforms must be within the station * if the bus station is mapped as a point, take the point which is closest to the platform * as an alternative, just use a relation - then we might as well drop the extra node/area for the bus station and apply the type=amenity; amenity=bus_station tags to the relation instead; renderers could then display an icon on the centroid and/or draw the convex hull of all members Not sure about this one yet, though, especially about the third alternative. Representing the whole bus station as a relation, in combination with being able to add the bus station as a whole to a route relation (see below), would introduce nested relations, which I realize some people don't like... Finally we need a way to add bus stations to route relations: * If the bus line has a designated platform (which may also be used by other buses, but the line in question may not stop at another), and you know it, add that with role=stop. * If the bus stops at different platforms depending on the time of the day or other factors, add the whole bus station with role=stop. * If you just don't know at which platform the bus stops, add the whole bus station (like above). If you've found out the details for a bus route, replace the bus station with the platform in the route relation. If the platform is a member of the relation, there is no need to add the bus station as well - in the best case this is convenience tagging, in the worst case it may actually confuse renderers (two members for one and the same stop). Line sketch renderers should use a combination of bus station and platform name/ref, where available: Assuming name=Terminal West for the bus station and ref=D for the platform, this could be rendered as: Terminal West, Platform D (note that the string Platform would be supplied by the application itself). If the platform has no name or ref, or the relation contains the whole bus station, just use the name of the bus station (as with an ordinary bus stop). But that's still a rough idea in my mind... Here the buses travel over the same stretch of asphalt quite often. Usually back and forth (what you call a spoon). Sometimes twice in the same direction (on a roundabout with one stop that serves both directions, so the bus that would exit the roundabout on the first exit, now goes around to serve the stop, then passes the road it came from, then exits to the right.) At 14 it gives inaccurate readings, at 14 you're to far in to *get an idea*. Hope you can explain it to me. this map is a work in progress. First you must zoom in into an area you're interested in to see if there's hires imagery available. Upon zooming out one by one, the colouring gets rendered again according to what you've found. After a while you'll have a big mosaic indicating coverage on a wide range. For example - look at Australia. There only a few areas are coloured green, which means there is hires (zoom 14 and more) imagery. A mapper might be interested in such a map to discover places in Australia s/he hasn't traced yet. Then look at the U.S., or Germany. These countries have full coverage. There you might want to know which cities have got imagery that surpasses in quality the normal hires you find throughout the country. And again, you want to see it in lower zoom levels to get an overview. What you do mean by inaccurate readings? I think the map is quite accurate. This is probably a holdover from old style multipolygons that were defined by the tags on the outer ways and had no tags on the relations. But putting tags on both the way and the relation would be wrong anyways, because the renderer can't know that boundary on the way is the same boundary on the relation. In Colorado I stripped all the tags off of the ways except for boundary=administrative and put them all into boundary relations. After this change, someone I know in Colorado complained that the county borders stopped rendering in osmarender. When I mentioned this on IRC it was suggested to leave admin_level=6 on the ways as well as in the relations. Kind of tagging for the renderer I suppose... but I've seen worse :) Anyway, I tried this in Wyoming tonight. Turns out this has an adverse effect on Mapnik rendering. Ways that only have boundary=administrative and are members of a boundary relation with admin_level=6 in the relation are rendered starting at z9. However if the way has admin_level=6 on it, while still being in an identical relation, then mapnik doesn't start rendering the boundary until z11. Agreed. What I mean is that if there are tags that apply to the multipolygon itself they should be only on the multipolygon. In your example the monument would be an inner way of the multipolygon and shouldn't have any tags related to the public square, but it would also be a monument, and the tags for the monument would belong on the monument's way. - Daniel On Feb 9, 2011, at 5:07 AM, M∡rtin Koppenhoefer wrote: 2011/2/9 M∡rtin Koppenhoefer dieterdre...@gmail.com: This depends on the situation. Re: [OSM-talk] What the license change is going to do to the map
I would like to say that I'm surprised no one has created a tool yet to simulate what a given area would look like after the switchover given the current (or simulated) list of users that have agreed to the new terms. It would take as inputs an .osm file and users_agreed.txt [1], and then apply the logic from [2] to create a new .osm with all offending data removed. Or maybe the .osm doesn't contain the history, so it would rather take a bounding box and then use the API, I'm not sure. Clearly I don't have the skills or knowledge to create this tool, but I hope someone takes the task! -Josh [1]: http://planet.openstreetmap.org/users_agreed/users_agreed.txt [2]: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open_Data_License/Closed_Issues#Features_touched_by_multiple_contributors.2C_not_all_of_whom_sign_up_to_new_terms On Wed, Feb 9, 2011 at 3:39 PM, David Murn da...@incanberra.com.au wrote: On Wed, 2011-02-09 at 12:30 -0500, Anthony wrote: In other words, that's just the impact from deleting the contributions of one user, who didn't even contribute that much. There are a many users who have contributed in the past but have become inactive and know nothing about OSM license term changes. [OSM-talk] Potlatch 2 tutorial video: part 1 (rough cut)
(Apologies to subscribers to newbies - I have already posted this message there, but I think it is of general interest, too.) The barrier to entry to OSM seems to be falling. Now we’ve got an awesome even easier-to-use online editor and hi-res imagery for much more of the world. We now need some basic tutorial videos to go with these. In the spirit of the do-ocracy, I’ve had a go at getting started. I’ve created a short tutorial video for adding POIs using Potlatch 2. I envisage this being part of a series of 3 short videos. I see parts 2 and 3 covering tracing ways from Bing, possibly adding ways to route relations, creating areas (closed ways) and a few remaining features. The aim is to keep each video under five minutes long (as I personally would not sit through an online tutorial any longer than that!). I’ve also aimed to make it reasonably easy to re-edit once P2 is the default editor. If they are popular, perhaps we could also add some GPS-related tutorials in the future. I haven’t yet attempted parts 2 and 3, because I thought I would get some feedback on the rough cut of part 1. Unfortunately, the sound quality is pretty poor due to my incompetent use of the audio settings, and I plan to re-record once I have some feedback (my intonation is a bit odd at times, too). I anticipate different people will have different views, so please don’t expect me to act on all suggestions (I’ll only act on the ones I think are a good idea!). So let me know what you think: http://www.vimeo.com/18559427 Cheers David (davespod) P.S. I’d consider releasing this CC0 to maximise worry-free re-editing and re-use. However, I’m slightly concerned there might be howls of anguish if OSM data is in a CC0 video. I suspect it would be fair use, as would using Bing imagery in the background, so more worried about the community reaction than the legality. -- View this message in context: http://gis.638310.n2.nabble.com/Potlatch-2-tutorial-video-part-1-rough-cut-tp6009950p6009950.html Sent from the General Discussion mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

It's not really a bug, if you have the following setup: Member way: boundary = administrative Relation: boundary = administrative admin_level = 6 What you're telling mapnik is that there are two boundaries, one is admin_level 6, the other is admin_level undefined. The admin 6 one will render at z11 or closer, the undefined one renders at z9 to z11. Ah, I think I see what you're saying. What zoom level do you expect it to render at? The current stylesheet doesn't render county boundaries until z11, period. My reading of the stylesheet [1] is that by not specifying an admin level you're abusing the admin-other category and making it render at lower zoom. If you want counties to intentionally render at z9 good luck getting someone to change the style :P. I'm not convinced it's an entirely valid distinction. The term grassland strikes me as a broadly useful one. And the farm land use may change from year to year which would mean updating the map according to the farmer's particular business whim in any particular year (think of farms that use the crop-rotation system). I've never distinguished on the OSM map between farm land that is grass, meadow, used for crops or animals. I just tag it all as landuse=farm. There is land opposite me that is a meadow and is not owned by a farm but is instead owned by a private owner. It could also just be considered badly maintained grass land with a fair number of weeds. Regards, Nick. On Wed, 2011-02-09 at 23:12 +, John Kennedy wrote: Following up... I was not clear but of course I wouldn't like us to lose the detail provided by Corine. I guess we and UK have more pasture than mainland Europe and Corine has not been added to UK yet so perhaps this is first time the subtlety of significant amount of farmland being under grass has arisen. To summarise my understanding the farmland options seem to be 1 - bend/interpret the OSM wiki definition of meadow to include farmed land under grass for now - could potentially bulk re-tag corine meadows in the future? 2 - propose the OSM wiki definition of meadow be changed to include farmed land under grass 3 - propose qualifications for landuse=farm (e.g. farm=tillage, farm=grassland) so at least arble land and farmland under grass can be differentiated and rendered differently. The term grassland seems to be an acceptable term (e.g. by BTO, CBS) to describe a grassy field that may be grazed by animals, harvested as hay, or harvested as silage. The term 'pasture' might imply presence of animals to some people so I would suggest we avoid that term. With this option, option 3, the landuse=meadow could remain as is in OSM wiki definition, i.e. relatively natural grassy land that is not part of a farm (if I read it correctly). 4 - ?? I'm still relatively new to all this. My gut tell's me 3 is the ideal way forward but I have no idea of timelines and implications. Re bogs, thinking about it actually the experts in Ireland are the IPCC. This page is interesting: http://www.ipcc.ie/bogsform.html. It suggests this hierarchy: (landuse?)=peatland peatland = fen or bog bog = blanket or raised blanket = mountain or Atlantic (if we want to go the whole hog. Re harvesting I agree that is worth capturing too. IPCC have this page: http://www.ipcc.ie/cbdefinition.html. It seems bog with industrial scale harvesting is called cutaway. The term cutover is used for smaller scale / manual harvesting. I don't know the best way of assigning attributes to a tag perhaps someone else can suggest that. The IPCC have probably already cataloged or even mapped which bogs are which - maybe even boundaries. I live in their part of the world and could make some enquiries. They could also clarify if the above proposals are sensible from their perspective and if the terminology is internationally recognised and comprehensive.

Dafür verwendet man langgestreckte aneinandergereihte Flächen (Seen).
