[Talk-br] [OpenStreetMap] #4902: Warnings for deleting/merging relation members
For some reason I haven't received this message directly, so my reply is a little late. https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/potlatch-dev/2014-February/002037.html Of course I welcome diversity, Richard, I have many personal reasons to welcome that, and I'm sure there are many people who are comfortable with Potlatch. However, I don't know any map maintainer (as I call someone who's watching changes and fixing errors as they are introduced by others) who shares that opinion about Potlatch. Of course, if all I wanted was to map without any regard for data integrity, I would simply not ask for this. And why I care about this: because the map was a huge mess in my area when I started mapping in OSM. Later I understood that over 50% of that mess was due to Potlatch-induced mistakes, and because there was nobody watching. Here's my opinion in further detail: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=24381 Other knowledgeable and well-involved contributors in Brazil agree, as you see in my quotes at the bottom, and you can verify them at my original post, linked at the top, to be sure nothing was lost in translation. If there's no intention to deprecate Potlatch, then what was replied in this TRAC issue makes little sense: https://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/4902 Beginners are the main source of such mistakes, and I'm sure they deserve attention. It doesn't matter to me if they use Potlatch or iD (or Merkaator, or some other editor), as long as the program helps prevent data loss which is easy to code for (easy in comparison to porting iD to IE or writing a new editor from scratch). Most (if not all) advanced users end up using JOSM anyway and its plethora of visual styles, presets and extended tools. As a side note, one can easily highlight routes in JOSM by searching for type=route. It's also very easy to write a visual style that highlights them. But for data integrity, this is usually not necessary because JOSM warns the user when deleting members of relations. Even if the user doesn't see them, he/she will know they exist, and that's what leads to seeking more knowledge about them. AFAIK, bulk edits are easy to detect and are mostly done by advanced users who are likely to have come across these pieces of advice: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Automated_Edits http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Guidelines Acting big and irresponsibly can be seen as vandalism, for which there is this: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Detect_Vandalism So, Richard, not a personal attack, but these issues need attention. I'm sure OSM has already lost great contributors in Brazil that felt that it was too easy to have their work undone because of these little issues. -- Fernando Trebien +55 (51) 9962-5409 The speed of computer chips doubles every 18 months.
Was kann man da machen? Wem sagt man Bescheid? [Talk-it] Nuovo Import
It is a continuing source of frustration to me that Canadian municipalities believe that they may attach any conditions to the data of the citizens. They may not. They must not. Municipalities, provinces / territories and the federal government serve at the pleasure of the citizens. The citizens permit the various governments to collect certain data required to effectively do the jobs that the citizens demand of the governments. The citizens do not permit the governments to restrict the use of this data in any way. The governments MUST publish that part of the collected data that is suitable for publication*. For any level of government to NOT YET be publishing the data of their citizens is for that government to demonstrate itself as incompetent. The government IS NOT mandated by the citizens to include ANY restrictions on the data of the citizens. (that data which is suitable for publication) The data of the citizens MUST be published as public domain data. Since Canadian data law makes no allowance for publication as public domain data, such data must be published under ODC-PDDL. For a municipality to insist on any restriction to the use of the citizens published data is a demonstration of incompetence and ignorance. For a municipality to insist on attribution is a demonstration of monstrous ego. ODC-PDDL is the correct license for Open Data published by Canadian governments. Attribution licenses, regardless of license publisher / maintainer are not. * Data suitable for publication excludes the data that citizens insist that the government hold securely. Medical and other sensitive data is not suitable for publication as Open Data. ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
Re: [Talk-ca] Updating Langley and use of alt_name?
From: Daniel Friesen [mailto:dan...@nadir-seen-fire.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2014 3:10 AM To: talk-ca@openstreetmap.org Subject: [Talk-ca] Updating Langley and use of alt_name? I'm a little new to OSM, recently I found that neither of the city boundaries for the Langley area showed up in searches for Langley. The issue was that neither had any type of name entry with just Langley I added an alt_name=Langley to both of the boundaries myself: http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2031946 (City of Langley) http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2031947 (Township of Langley) I think it's reasonable. Langley could refer to either, but it's not the official name of either, or the less formal name they commonly use. alt_name sounds suitable. For those who aren't local - Both the City and Township are incorporated municipalities in local terms, which maps to admin_level=8 - They are adjacent, but do not intersect, nor are they within each other. - The Township is much larger, and has open data. The City is smaller, and has GIS department consisting of one person. - There is often no distinction between the two, and their addresses are on a grid layout That's all fairly simple, but the place node is more complicated. Langley is not a city in British English, but a town. However, I'm not sure that its place=town node can be tied solely to the admin relation for one or the other. I'm not sure what to do, but one suggestion was to put it as the label of both. Label is a bit of a misnomer really - the only current function of it is to Indicate that the place node and admin boundary somewhat refer to the same thing. It is not used by the standard stylesheet for rendering of administrative boundary labels, nor are there plans for it to be (https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/105) ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

Před 9 dny jsem hlásil na stavební odbor Mladé Boleslavi chybějící souřadnice zde: http://vdp.cuzk.cz/vdp/ruian/adresnimista/26713080 Dneska mi volala paní, že daná parcela (myslela asi budovu) má nějak omylem (prý možná už od války) přidělena 2 č.p. a on když tenhle bod umístí, tak se rozbije zas něco jiného. Takže nejdřív chtějí přes evidenci obyvatel obeslat všechny, kdo tu adresu někde úředně uvádí (škola tam má sídlo, možná někdo bydliště) a nějak to vyřešit.
