I agree with Andrew. We did one of these tagging guides back in 2012 when we mapped Gulu, Uganda, and it proved super helpful. It would be great to have this hosted somewhere as an example of best practices in humanitarian mapping. [OSM-talk-be] Updates for OSM.org map
Today Matthijs Melissen posted 2 mails regarding the standard map on osm.org. So for those that are not on the talk mailing list: Dear all, Today, v2.25.0 of the openstreetmap-carto stylesheet has been released and rolled out to the openstreetmap.org servers. It might take up to 48 hours before all tiles show the new rendering. Changes include: * New style for marsh/wetland rendering. * Added rendering for marsh/wetland and mud labels. * Changed rendering of national parks boundaries. * Changed rendering of theme park boundaries. * Country and state labels are now only rendered for areas of a minimum size. * Airport icons are now also rendered on zoom 11, 12 and 13. * Various bug fixes. For a full list of commits, see https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/compare/v2.24.0...v2.25.0 . As always, we welcome any bug reports at https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues. Dear all, The newest version of openstreetmap-carto, the default rendering used on openstreetmap.org, changes the way country and state labels are rendered. Country and state labels are no longer rendered from the place=country and place=state nodes, but are instead rendered from the boundary=admin relations, using admin_level=2 for country labels and admin_level=4 for state labels. This way, the size of the area can be used to determine whether a label should be rendered (preventing for example Isle of Man to be rendered at zoom level 4). The version has just rolled out, and changes will show up over the next few days. In order for state and country labels to be displayed correctly, mappers should make sure that: - Country and state polygons are not broken (i.e. they must be a full uninterrupted loop); - Country and state polygons must have appropriate name and ref tags. I already noticed a couple of places where the name and ref tag on the place node differs from the name and ref tag on the boundary multipolygon. Please make sure that the data is correct in both places. Lesotho seems to be the only country with state nodes but without state boundaries. It would be great if someone were able to import state boundaries for this country. Croatia and Senegal currently use admin_level=3 instead of admin_level=4 for state boundaries. Using admin_level=4 seems to be the international standard, which we followed in the stylesheet, so these countries might want to consider changing their tagging. Kind regards, Matthijs ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be
[OSM-talk] Tiles and geocoding
Hi, Just this morning I've done the final todo in the polytiles script: now it produces tiles 10 times faster, because it renders them in metatiles. Also MBTiles writer now supports multiprocessing, so it's also 6-8 times more speed. If you need a lot of tiles, do not download them from osm.org or other sources, render them yourself: it is finally faster than downloading. https://github.com/zverik/polytiles I'd also like to remind of Nik4, the best tool for preparing printed maps of any region, any size and any quality; and of BigMap 2 for downloading and stitching some tiles from any of ~20 sources. The latter can even work online: Enqueue button queues a task, and in 2-3 minutes you'll get your image. The limit for that is 100 tiles. https://github.com/zverik/Nik4 http://bigmap.osmz.ru/ As for Nik4, there is Get Veloroad service for generating big vector maps online (basically a front-end to Nik4), but the server has only data for Russia and some neighbouring countries. Last week Dmitry Kiselev has made a Docker container for that: just install Docker, pull the container and start it: sudo apt-get install docker.io sudo docker pull dkiselev/nik4web sudo docker run -p 8081:80 -i -t dkiselev/nik4web /bin/bash startup The front-end would be at http://localhost:8081/nik4. You would need to run osm2pgsql with your region before requesting images. With it you can get PNG or vector SVG images (resolution independent), pre-processed for a sane page size and for easier movement of labels. Finally, yesterday I've translated into English a small geocoding exercise: https://github.com/Zverik/visgeocode (live at http://zverik.github.io/visgeocode/en.html ). It takes a CSV file with addresses in one of columns, runs these addresses through MapQuest Nominatim, and allows dragging resulting markers if geocoding was not precise. Then it can turn markers into building contours, but since my server has only Russia, you'd need to set up your own (maybe install the cgi script locally). The result can be downloaded either as CSV or as GeoJSON. We used this page for geocoding 22k addresses in Saint-Petersburg; Russian version uses three geocoders for better quality. Re: [OSM-talk] OSM France BANO project... openaddresses in France
Hi Christian, As I read OKFN article [1] about BANO project ( November 17, 2014 ) It's not perfectly clear to me what it is the BANO license ? ( only ODBL or Dual licensed ? ) from the text [1] : Q:The reached agreement includes a dual license framework. You can reuse the data for free under an ODbL license, or you can opt for a non-share-alike license but you have to pay a fee. Is share-alike clause an obstacle for the private sector? . [1] http://blog.okfn.org/2014/11/17/an-unprecedented-public-commons-partnership-for-the-french-national-address-database/ regards, Imre 2014-05-24 17:02 GMT+02:00 Peter Wendorff wendo...@uni-paderborn.de: Hi Christian, (shortening the last message to comment on some parts only) Am 24.05.2014 16:04, schrieb Christian Quest: BANO is not designed to be used as an import source for OSM. It uses sources (opendata, cadastre) that can be imported in OSM. These sources have been used over the past years and will still be used to add addresses in OSM, one at a time, or street by street which will take years before completion. So, BANO is there to allow to use all the available address data right now without having to wait years to get them cleanly added to OSM. I agree - but why should anybody add the data manually to osm if it's even not visible any more where data is missing, as in Nominatim both sources look the same. This has one good side effect... reduce the pressure on massive address imports in OSM and give us the opportunity to improve the quality thru survey prior to add it to OSM. I agree if you propose BANO as a data source for any private or third party setup of nominatim or openstreetmap data, but I oppose it to be used in the projects instances. Mappers detect errors and missing data while using these instances. I add missing streets occasionally after I failed to find them in OSM - using the map renderings, nominatim or other tools. I wouldn't even detect that they are missing when nominatim would return the results from another source. 2014-05-24 12:58 GMT+02:00 Peter Wendorff wendo...@uni-paderborn.de: Adding it to (the osm installation of) nominatim on the other hand is a bad idea, I think: IMHO nominatim.openstreetmap.or should rely on OSM as a data source as pure as possible. Adding different data sets might be useful to add information not possible or out of scope of the osm database (like importance factors using the wikipedia links), but BANO is a different thing. If the BANO addresses are free and open enough for OSM, we should encourage to work on bringing them to the OSM database itself (provided, they are GOOD enough as well). How should anybody in France get motivation to collect more addresses for the osm database itself, if anything is available in BANO already? I'm pushing the french community to be more motivated on having all streets and all streets name in OSM (BANO allowed us to detect 40% missing streets or street names) more than adding addresses without surveying them. Great - but I fear, the availability of third data sources like BANO through the usual tools destroys motivation again, the motivation get's an extrinsic one, because the intrinsic need of mappers to get rid of errors and missing results using OSM is missing due to results returned out of the BANO data. I agree to motivate to collect BETTER address data... it we collect the same data with the same quality level it looks to me more losing our time than anything else. Mappers are better than you might think. Collecting the same data with the same quality level is not possible. 1) the data is checked in reality = so survey on the ground increases quality with respect to errors. 2) the data is correct at the date of the survey = where it is done it's more up to date than any imported data, but of course only where it is done. 3) When a mapper goes out to add streets and house numbers, it's easy to collect any other stuff where there is no other data source available. post boxes, benches, vending machines, opening hours, surface of the streets and much more stuff that increases quality. In contrast importing data is restricted to the data contained in the data source. P.S: Of course this is not meant to deal with the software as such, but for the installations/instances officially part of OSM. Feel free to set up an BANO nominatim server to show the strength of BANO instead. In that case remove geonames and TIGER address search from osm.org Nominatim instance. On osm.org Genonames is a different search result set, distinct from Nominatim, there are two different query results returned. This is a good way to go, and yes, it might an idea to do the same with BANO - but that's not what you proposed: it's not adding the BANO data to Nominatim. regards Peter ___ talk mailing list

Re: [OSM-talk-ie] Inclusion of Barony of .. as prefix to all Barony names?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi folks, I don't really have too strong an opinion on this. If I were doing it from scratch, I'd prefer to leave out the Barony of etc., since as John points out, it /should/ be deducable from the object. However, we have had County in county names for ages, and many other places in the world had extra stuff in the name tag, so it's not uncommon. When working with OSM data though, you *always* have to do some cleaning up or post-processing or something. So I wouldn't worry about people not knowing when the name starts. Hence I'm going to just leave the names as the mapper mapped them. Rory On 03/12/14 19:18, John Kennedy wrote: Having said all that, I just realised that Counties are name = County Kildare and loc_name = Kildare. I too noticed that some mappers include ED and Civil Parish but actually many do not and I haven't noticed any guidance on this anywhere for the moment. So it would be good to come to a consensus on these terms also. Thinking about it a bit, I would suggest we try to find a way to improve the readability of the map rather than add the extra text to the names of CPs, EDs or Baronies inside the OSM database. For example, it might be possible for the renderer of the (really helpful) slippymap at http://dev3.openstreetmap.ie/osm/slippymap.html to add the extra text automatically, or perhaps the fonts / colours / hatching could be tweaked. I suggest approaching it from this point of view so we can stick to the OSM convention of capturing the what just the once, in the other tags only. As well as reducing effort, text, duplication, possibility of mistakes, it also allows names to be queried automatically as expected. Forgive the ridiculous examples but if somebody wanted to analyse how many things start with each letter of the alphabet...we don't want them to have to write an exception for Irish Baronies so that they start at the 11th character (to skip Barony of ). Or for the student who for some reason wants to calculate the average length of names of things in OSM, we don't want them to have to subtract 13 when it comes to length of names of Civil Parish. Re: [OSM-talk-ie] Historic and unmarked grave sites
I've been tagging these too. I generally tag them as they are written in the gsgs sheets, so if they are called a burial ground I tag as historic=burial_ground and if the sheet calls out the type I add something along the lines of burial_ground=children etc. I adjust the above based on what the sheet shows. If there is no physical evidence that I can see in the imagery, I adjust my tagging slightly to historic=archaeological_site, archaeological_site=burial_ground, burial_ground=children and so on. I add/omit tags based on available evidence from the sheets and imagery Hope that helps Dave On 10 Dec 2014 15:50, Rory McCann r...@technomancy.org wrote: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I've also been adding a few things like this from the GSGS maps (e.g. https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3216080583 ). Once you go off the coast a lot of the rules go out the window, so to speak. I know Cormac had a lot of trouble off the coast of Galway but got it worked out in the end.
Tu as oublié quelques pays NIcolas.
Re: [OSRM-talk] Routing can better.
So the turn lanes left|right are not controlled just before N8 On witch news-server I can find the list? https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/osrm-talk/ are the achieves cannot do a search in it. I am reading this gmane.comp.gis.openstreetmap.region.be thx 2014-12-10 18:46 GMT+01:00 Dennis Luxen i...@project-osrm.org: Had a look into the data. The primary road and the primary_link have both maxspeed=90 set which is probably the ground truth. That being said, OSRM thinks that both ways have equal expected travel time breaking ties arbitrarily. So, what I did was looking at satellite imagery and spotted that the primary link passes traffic lights. I added those which will incur a 5 second delay in travel time. Thus with the next data update, the primary will be chosen. —Dennis — Want to support OSRM development?
