TF> If I create a new message using the new message icon, the BCC is

C> But there are problems with the _account_ template and not the AB
C> templates... ;-)

There are TWO manifestations of this bug:

1. If both the Account New message template _and_ the AB entry New
message template contain BCC macros and a new message is created using
the favourites drop-down list, the AB BCC macro is ignored.

2. If _only_ the Account New message template contains a BCC macro
(the AB entry New message template is empty) and a new message is
created using the favourites drop-down list, the Account BCC macro is
ignored.

Interestingly, if _only_ the AB entry New message template contains a
BCC macro (the Account New message template does not contain a BCC
macro) and a new message is created using the favourites drop-down
list, the AB entry New message template BCC is used correctly.

Thus, the Account New message BCC macro entry is setting the BCC macro
value to null or empty when the favourites drop-down list is used.

What's the best way to report something like this? Is our discussion
here enough?

Conditional suppression of "Attachments: "

2002-01-07 Thread Andrew Aronoff

Hello,

When I save a message to file that contains no attachments, the saved
message contains "Attachments: ". I'd like to eliminate this
line from the saved message _only_ if there are no attachments. I'd
like this line to appear with the list of attached files if such files
are present.

So, let's say message1 contains no attachments. The line "Attachments:
" would _not_ appear when I save the message to a file.

Let's say message2 contains an attached file, "file1.ext". The line
"Attachments: file1.ext" would appear when this message is saved.

How can this best be done?

Isn't that a very unique situation. It can happen that there is selected
text but not often. It works this way in Agent and I found it very
intuitive.
I think the Find Function is more confusing. You don't even have to mark
text it just grabs the word that's closest.

OK, the paper money looks like monopoly money, but doesn't it give you

David's suggestion is one of convenience if you are a mouse User,
because there isn't even a need to hit the Reply button... simply swipe
the text you want quoted and without lifting a finger press the middle
mouse button (as long as you have it programmed for F4) and bingo!

I've been doing that for a long time and find it very convenient. :o)

Hmm, sounds logical but: many people seem to read mails (and Webpages)
with their mouse pointers following/leading their eyes and marking the
letters they fly over, you know what I mean?

When they reply on a mail and still accidently have parts of the text
marked... in your scenario -> chaos ;-)

I don't know about your system, but marked text has a different colour
over here. I cannot imagine reading "with the mouse" rather than just
with my eyes.

Unless they make one little click anywhere in the message, which voids
all text markings. But then, I think your example was streching it a
bit anyway. :-Þ

I don't think I understand what you're saying here. This is how I
normally reply to a message; first I highlight the text I want to
reply to (with the mouse) and then I press my middle-mouse button. I

David,
There are no right's and wrongs here. It depends on the way you work.
The point I was trying to make is that if you have text marked an press
reply, it looks like you want to reply using only the marked text and I
feel the software should be smart enough to to recognise that.
Now you have to do the thinking and press a separate button, in your
case the middle mouse button or shift-F4.

I have been reading about people's frustration with software this
weekend and agree that to little thought goes into make software do what
it is made to do intuitively.
You can't keep adding features and assigning keyboard short-cuts or even
menu items to them and expect people to use them.
On the other hand we all remember the paper clip from word and the statue
that was erected for the person who discovered who to disable it.

The most notable points made were:
- The software should concentrate on its main function and "hide" all
extra's. Compare this to a VCR. Main function is record and play not edit.
- Extra functions should be off by default. When the user regonises
he/she needs them they can be switch on and not be in the way all the
time before they are needed.
- Look what the user want to do and help him doing it.

There is no "top part". There is no code to produce it that way. It
doesn't appear in Mozilla or in IE, only in Opera. Ergo, it is the
lack of correct DOM support in Opera causing it to appear.

I have two choices:

1) Ignore the problems experienced by the 3% of users who are using
   Opera as a primary browser.

2) Take notice of that 3% and re-write the entire site without using
   BrainStorm for maintenance and publishing.

What would you do?

I am actually going to do the latter but don't feel particularly
happy about it. It will take time and I have very little of that right
now :-(.

Anyway. This topic is done to death. I think we should move on and get
back to the primary purpose of the list. Anyone wanting to discuss
this further can do so either off-list or on TBOT.

Thank you for your clear explanation. I really second this. TB! should
really recognize when you want to reply only the marked text instead
of the whole text when pressing the reply button. The same counts for
the reply to all button.

AFAIK this is a long standing wish, but maybe we should refresh the

Andrew does in fact read the messages from the online message archive
and takes the subject & relevant message texts and pastes them into a
new created mail.
He's subscribed in DIGEST mode only and this is his kind of 'real time
mail reading' :-)
Because neither DIGEST (which is received to late to answer in 'real
time' as he does) nor online archive offer the message id's so he
can't build up proper references in his mails. Therefore we all,
threading by references, see his mails 'unthreaded' / 'beginning a new
thread'.

I guess the server which maintains the archives has improved. I recollect

The past two days I am trying out Mozilla, and I also took a look at
the integrated mail client. I don't like it but I found out that the
threading of messages worked better then in TB!. Even the messages
without the necessary references headers did thread correctly.

Now my question is; how does Mozilla accomplish this? Is it a
combination of threading by references and by subject or something? It
would be cool if TB! worked this way too.

The Bat! - bug report - new message template BCC macro ignored

2002-01-07 Thread Andrew Aronoff

Hi, TB! developers,

I'm using The Bat! Version 1.53t
  Serial Number 3283B3AA
  under Windows 2000 Pro SP2

I'd like to report a bug:

Description:
---

Under certain circumstances, the BCC macro is ignored if a new message
is created with the Favourites drop-down list.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
--

1. If both the Account New message template _and_ the AB entry New
message template contain BCC macros and a new message is created using
the Favourites drop-down list, the AB BCC macro is ignored.

2. If _only_ the Account New message template contains a BCC macro
(the AB entry New message template is empty) and a new message is
created using the Favourites drop-down list, the Account BCC macro is
ignored.

This bug has been confirmed by several other people. A TBUDL thread on
this subject can be found here:

http://www.mail-archive.com/tbudl@thebat.dutaint.com/msg32531.html

regards, Andrew Aronoff

Either this or it simply sorts by subject.
I don't know how this looks in Mozilla as I don't have one installed
by myself right now nor did I ever used the MUA build in.

But as Mozilla is GPL'ed: how about having a look into the source code
to figure out this question? *ggg* ... OK, I was only joking :-)

Only with a work around.
Create three filters, two for the desired action (one filter for each
group) and one filter with no action for entries that are in both
groups. The latter filter should be first of these three in the
sorting office and should not have checked the option Çontinue
processing with other filters).
That's the only way I see a possibility for something like this.

AbnnnPPP insert a field from the address book. The "nnn" part
determines the address that is used to retrieve information from the
address book, the "PPP" part is the name of the address book field to
be used.

Possible values for the " nnn " part are:

TO use the address entry for the TO addressee of the current message
OFROM use the address entry for the FROM address of the original message
OREPLY use the address entry for the REPLY-TO address of the original message
OTO use the address entry for the TO addressee of the original message
FROMuse the address entry for the FROM address of the current message
REPLY use the address entry for the REPLY-TO address of the current message

Possible values for the " PPP " part are:

Namethe full name
FirstName the first name
LastNamethe last name
MiddleName the middle name
Handle the handle (alias)
NamePrefix the name prefix (such as "Mr.", "Mrs.", "Dr." etc)
NameSuffix the name suffix (such as ", Jr.", ", PhD", etc)
Birthdaythe date of birth
Email the primary e-mail address
Addrthe home street address
Citythe home city name
State the home state/province name
ZIP the home address ZIP/Postal code
Country the home address country name
Phone the home phone number
Fax the home facsimile number
Mobile the mobile phone number
Pagethe personal homepage URL
Company the company name
Job the job title
Deptthe department name
Office the office number
BusAddr the business street address
BusCity the business address city name
BusStatethe business address state/province name
BusZIP the business address ZIP/Postal code
BusCountry the business address Country name
BusPhonethe business telephone number
BusFax the business facsimile number
BusPagerthe business pager number
BusPage the business homepage URL
Gender the person's gender
Charset the default character set
Memothe Memo contents of the address entry

AbnnnPPP="text" insert a field from the address book as above. If
there is no matching address book entry or the field requested from
the address book is blank, insert text instead

These are all AB fields you can use. Check the help on "Address
related macros"

BTW Why do you use HTML-encoding mail for a message that doesn't need
it? Makes the message more than twice as long as necessary. A waste of
bandwidth for you and everybody else on this list.

and many of the members here do not appreciate it. Some even have

Hi Joerg - I had the same problem coming from Outlook XP.

One really bad thing was, that when I exported Outlook mails to the
msg format, TB did not see any kind of date or time from the mail, so
all mails were just there, without any way of sorting them.

So, my glorious solution: ;)

I put about 100 mails into one mail as attachments, right from
Outlook, then sent that to an email address.

>From TB, I used the POP account from the used email address and just
downloaded the big mail. A doubleclick on one of the attached mails
opened a window with all the mails listed with the correct date - I
just imported all those into my TB inbox.

Hope this helps,

Sebastian. :)

That'll provoke a huge postbag but I feel no desire not to contribute
;)

Main benefits:

(i) TB! can cope with huge databases of emails (80,000+ in my case!)
without crashing or misbehaving; there was never the slightest chance
that Outlook could do so, and I was continually having to hive off
messages into archives and juggle things around (and there's no need
for "PST [Outlook mail file] repair utilities" and similar);

(ii) TB! doesn't suffer from intrinsic security problems (not merely a
spectator's opinion; my company suffered from several Outlook viruses
which caused the most extraordinary chaos);

(iii) TB! loads quickly and can be left to run in the background
without bloating up the machine;

(iv) TB!'s filtering is excellent; Outlook's filters are a sad
failure, as they try to use a "naturalish" language which isn't really
tractable;

(v) TB!'s templates are also excellent; Outlook users see something
like "At 6.48pm on 7 January 2002 Fred said:" at the top of the
message and think this is wonderful ;)

(vi) TB! has no integrated calendar functionality. This might sound
rather odd, but on one project I was plagued with meeting requests and
other auto-generated bombardments from Outlook. Things actually ran
more smoothly when I persuaded everyone to switch off all this
functionality because I used TB!, which didn't understand it ;)

(vii) The backup and restore is an absolute lifesaver, and would be
even better if it could be automated from outside the program (a
common request) ...

Main demerits:

(i) Rather stiff UI - customisable toolbars and suchlike are more
important than I thought;

(ii) The learning curve is phenomenal; after several months using the
package I'm still learning every day. Unfortunately, most people don't
have the time or motivation for this, and it's a bit annoying when
you've overlooked something because the online help isn't very good
(if a secret benefactor were willing to pay 6 months' salary I'd
gladly vanish into a corner and rewrite the whole help system from
scratch for nothing ;)

Alastair, how 'bout a conglomeration of benefactors?

I agree to chip in $20.

Who will see my $20 and raise me $10?

I recently converted from Outlook 98 to TB on NT4 (SP6). Hopefully, my
experiences will prove helpful, but no guarantees!

FWIW, I couldn't find a direct path to get my messages from Outlook to
TB except by exporting each message (individually) from outlook and
then importing those messages into TB. That said, there is a
fairly-good indirect route.

1. In Outlook Express, import the messages from Outlook, then close
   Outlook Express.
2. In The Bat! use the Import Wizard to import the messages from
Outlook Express. (Tools->Import Messages->Mailbox Import Wizard).

Using this method, I imported over three thousand messages from
Outlook to TB in just a few minutes (the longest part was the transfer
between the MS products!)

However, there is a problem if you're running multiple PST files.
Outlook Express only finds the messages in your main PST file. Because
of this, you cannot import messages that are in additional personal
folders (PST files). The work-around here is to copy all your messages
from the secondary PST files to your main PST file before doing the
first import.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a way to get my contact lists from
Outlook to TB, keeping email addresses, snailmail addresses, and
telephone numbers intact. The most reliable method for me is to export
as VCard from Outlook and import the VCard into TB as I need each
address. However, that means that it will be some time before I can
give the simple MAPI function over to TB -- because that prevents
Outlook from starting and I need Outlook to retrieve my contact info.

In all, this has not been an easy process. However, for me, the
immunity from email viruses and web-bugs, the speed and flexibility
make it worth while.

Jon,

JL> For those who have made the shift, what are the biggest benefits you have

I switched finally just a few days ago because of problems with
Outlook 2002 receiving various attachment extensions, stripping LF's
in received messages, and adding LF's in sent messages. TB leaves my
messages alone.

I find TB's filters and macro's to be much easier to use and for me
more powerful.

I like reducing to the tray icon.

I think TB is at least equal to or better than Outlook for speed and
handling my volume of mail (200-300 messages per day - 1.3 GB of
Outlook pst's)

TB is better for searching.

TB does not lock up on certain MIME certs the way Outlook did.

Not having my calendar.

A couple of filter questions

2002-01-07 Thread Alan Officer

L> "Should I dump Outlook 2000?":

I switched last week and love it. Mail archive from Outlook2k via Outlook
Express 5 and then into TB worked fine, contacts cobbled across via CSV files
eventually. There are a couple of things I have not been able to -

1. Can't find the Maintenance mode for backup & restore - where is it??Is it
not there because I am in standalone mode maybe? Do I care since it seems to
me I can just copy the directories anyway?

2. Can't see how to use filters like "InAddrGroup: friends" in an Incoming
Filter, where would that string go? And where can I find the list of variables like
"InAddrGroup" (which I only know about from an earlier posting)

oh, and

3. I have set up 2 POP3 accounts, with one doing a selective download (which
alone was worth switching from Outlook believe me!) then diverting all surviving
mail to my main identity's Inbox. This in turn runs some "Incoming" filters to
run highlight colours, distribute into mailing-list folders and so on. Thing
with this is the filters don't seem to always run until I do a manual re-filter.
Do the Incoming Filters only work reliably when downloading from the server
 directly into that Inbox?

Many thanks for any answers you might wish to provide! I've already spent
several hours configuring and tweaking TB and I'm very nearly content!

You can skip the 'reliable'. Incoming filters only work when
downloading from the matching account. This is rumoured to be changed

After the message was filtered to another account it isn't processed
by that account's filters. You might try to use local delivery, but it
changes some headers...

Is this a bug or is it a BAT "feature":

If I try to copy a string that goes from say 3 words before the line

Also, in HTML view I am not able to copy and paste certain strings,

Aah...so that's what a "Euro" looks like.

According to Comptroller of the Currency, a Euro is worth
approximately 90 cents US.

So you can do much better than a measly $4.50, Roman.

Let's say...30 €?

Now who will make it 50?

I will try to explain: I have a tracking number, that I need to copy
by highlighting it and hitting ctrl-c - then, when I try to PASTE it
into my internet explorer, it just gives me that half of the number
that was in the upper line, but nothing from the second line.

DvZ> Copying works just fine. How do you want to paste in an (html)message?

See, it doesn't - I just want to copy a string from an HTML mail and
paste it into another program - it appears to just not copy anything.

Any input?

it is there, on the second line of the box of your IE you pasted it
to...

you have to select the second line after copy/pasting the first and
ctrl-c/ctrl-v it too. it's tedious, but it works.

sometimes del works at the end of the first line in the IE-box,
sometimes it doesn't.

good luck.

Hello Gerard,

GDV> feel the software should be smart enough to to recognise that.

Be a little careful here. TB is using a template when you reply, so
really the template should take precedence. Perhaps a new macro would
be the better way of doing what you need. Something like
%QUOTESELECTED could by default give any selected text, and if none is
selected or you hit the quote modifier button (F4 or whatever), it
should quote the full text.

That way you really can *define* the behaviour you want instead of
changing the default.

There is no such thing as a %QUOTESELECTED macro at this time. I am
merely using it as a suggestion for a useful macro.

That's because it contains a line break. The edit control you're
pasting into stops at the line break. It's not TB's fault.

There used to be a problem with the implementation of Ctrl-C to copy.
Try using the context menu or Ctrl-Ins instead.

Re: The faq and Opera

2002-01-07 Thread ETM

I am confused (sometimes not hard to do).

If I create a "new account" in TB, it creates a totally separate mail folder
in addition to the main account. I do *not* want that. I want to be able
to occasionally use "List Administration" as my ID for outgoing mailing list
posts, and ETM as my ID for non-administrative posts to the same mailing
lists. I want the downloaded filtered mail to go into a single mail system.
Why would I want to check two separate mail area and its folders?

This might work for spouses using the same PC, might work for separating
personal and business, but does not work for what I want, which is a
posting-only-account-ID. I am absolutely indifferent to how the person
addresses me (whether it be List Admin or ETM) since there is no change in
the underlying mail address, simply the account ID, so long as the incoming
mail filters to the proper folder (in one mail area, not two) and I can
quickly switch my personality ID in the outgoing email.

In my confusion, since I am able to do this in OE using my cable address and
a yahoo address/pop3 download to OE, am I missing how it is done in TB or is
TB modeled after the Netscape profile system which separates users and
mailboxes and prevents combining mail download to one area?

For simple use, TB doesn't have a steep learning curve. My mother is

You've found the right list for this question. Here are the benefits
of Outlook:

- HTML email by default. This means colours, animated gifs, even
sounds!

- Automatic opening of attachments. No need to click and that .pif
file that some unkown friendly person sent to you.

- Hiding of "known" file extensions. If they are known to your
computer, you don't need to see them any more. After all, what do you
have the computer for?

- Automatic sending of mails by external programs. (The Bat! can do
this also, but unfortunately, it will let you know about it.)

- Integration into everything else in your computer. OL can do just
everything except wash your socks!

- Proprietary file format for message base, so that no other mail
proggy or editor has access to your messages.

- Handling of several POP accounts into the same Inbox. Seperate
inboxes for seperate accounts, as offered by TB, is just too
cumbersum.

- Integrated newsreader. Even if you don't read news, it is always
good to have a newsreader in your RAM. Who knows, one day you might
need it.

This list may not be complete, these are just the most outstanding
benefits of Outlook. Maybe others want to add more. ;-)

I guess the point Alastair was making is that the learning curve is made
phenomenal mainly due to lack of information or information not presented in
proper manner.

I personally used TB for over 8 months as described you in the first part. Its
only when I stated digging did I realize I have to dig deep and at multiple
place to strike. This is what make getting used to TB difficult.

For most people e-mail is a tool to get their work done and one cannot expect
them to search all over the net or subscribe to TBUDL to get majority of info.
It should be available in the help file with examples.

I guess its high time people at RITlabs realized that its just not important
to have a good product but also package it well.

Re[2]: The faq and Opera

2002-01-07 Thread Joseph N.

Group the separate accounts.

Having separated accounts is a good thing. There are all sorts of
settings that might differ depending on one's audience or context. But
you can also achieve the convenience that I think you are looking for.

One of your accounts should have administrative rights. It is
whichever one can access, on the menu bar, Options/Network &
Administration. Then, under the Privileges tab, set the access
privileges for the two accounts you created. Then go under Groups,"
create a new name for the group, and check the boxes for both of your
accounts. Set and confirm a password if you want. From then on, when
you log in, use the group name instead of one of the account names.
TB! will open with both accounts. You can filter using both, i.e.,
from one to the other, and even cut, copy, and paste filters from one
to the other.

Does that accomplish what you're looking for?

Seperate From ID's with same Email address (was: The faq and Opera)

Understand. For me this was the first reason I ever looked into TB,
but different folks etc.

If the two ID's (ETM and admin) are different email adresses, you need
to create different accounts in TB. However, you can use filters to
still filter all mails into the appropriate folders, even across
accounts.

If the two ID's use the same email address, you don't need to create a
seperate account in TB.

In order reply with different ID's (is this what you wish to do?), you
can set up Reply templates that use the %From and %Reply-To macros.

E> Why would I want to check two separate mail area and its folders?

I have seven compeltely different accounts. Of course, office and
work, but also German mailing lists, English mailing lists, etc. I
wish to keep them seperately. None of the other mailers I used was
able to do that.

So, instead of creating a new account in TB, all you want to do is
create a new folder. And then you want to use folder templates with
the macros I mentioned above. Whenever you reply out of the specific
folder, your From address will be set. (You don't need to set the
Reply-To in your case).

Much easier than either of those (see above). ;-)

Me too! What I like about MS Office - their animated
character(especially a cat)Actually, that is the main reason I am
moving from one version of Office to another. I would like to see
similar one in TB, but I understand that the developers are quite busy
with cleaning up bugs and preparing new versions(they are preparing v2
for ages). I hope that some time they will add MS agent support to
their new version or a plug-in (together with plugin support :)
So, I begin waiting...
BTW this character can carry the functions of
Help and Menu navigator.
I am *not* joking!
