Do you mean to say that when you re-filter for a second time some
messages trigger the filter while they didn't do so the first you ran
the filter?
If so your sorting office might be corrupted, but apart from redoing
it from scratch I wouldn't know what to do.

yes that's basically it. it never seems to filter all email in my
inbox. firts time or second time. i just keep repeating the re-filter
and it only does a small amount and says it's finished each time i do
it.

well if i have to redo all my filters again to get it sorted then

Thanks. That is what I thought and that is why I haven't even tried v2.0
yet. I do a lot of automatic and semi-automatic message processing and I
therefore use a lot (quite a lot) of templates and macros. I know that
sooner or later I will upgrade and will have to at least tweak some or
many of my templates, but I would really hate to have to come back to

Man, where's a smelly old fish when you need one? :)

My position is not one of advocating HTML, but a more practical
rather than an ivory tower view of the world. Pandora opened her
HTML e-mail and it's here to stay. We techies have to figure out a
way to deal with it. TB! is one - filter the "meat" and ignore
the fluff. Works for me, but I don't have a shortage of b/w.

Side note - In the vast majority of cases, the issue of bandwidth
is a red herring in this argument. Not that bandwidth doesn't
matter, but SPAM has become so overwhelming that its percentage
use of bandwidth far exceeds the cost of HTML. If b/w is the main
concern, SPAM needs to get the attention.

The battle of HTML vs. plain text is comparable to the religious
wars of Windows vs. Mac, Motif vs. OpenLook, etc. People have an
opinion, and they have facts to support their side. The other
side has just has many facts, too. It comes down to what a person
believes and values.

If you have a lot of b/w, "paying" 3K for a 1K message is not a
big deal and the "waving palms" aren't that bothersome other than
aesthetically. If you don't, then _paying_ 3K for 1K hurts!

PS - I've not posted this much of my opinions in 10 years - in
this post and others recently. It must be pent up and
overflowing! Maybe more fiber would help. :)

I've just started playing about with TB macros etc so I thought I'd give
it a go. Now I'm more confused than when I started. At first glance this
seemed to give me what I wanted but unfortunately I glanced again so now
I have some questions:

%SETPATTREGEXP="(;.*$)"
%REGEXPBLINDMATCH="%HEADER('Received')"
%VAR123=%SUBPATT='0'
%SETPATTREGEXP="\s.*(?=\+)"
%REM='Without timezone info?'
Received on %REGEXPMATCH="%VAR123"
%REM='With timezone info?'
%SETPATTREGEXP="\s.*"
Received on (with TZ) %REGEXPMATCH="%VAR123"

This successfully retrieves the latest 'Received' date from the message
headers but that is obviously not the one TB uses. Is there any way of
accessing that?

Why should I need to use the %VAR at all? Shouldn't it be possible to
put:
%REGEXPMATCH="%SUBPATT='0'"
That just gives me the whole header.

Is it possible to run a macro against incoming mail?
Any pointers gratefully received.

A new utility - POP3 bandwidth limiter

2003-09-11 Thread Fernando P. Nájera Cano
Hi all

I'm developing a bandwidth limiter for POP3 (I haven't find any
similar for free by now), useful for The Bat! as well as any other
POP3 client. It is very simple as I do not plan to release it, but I
want to know if it could be useful for other people too so I would
develope it a little more. I can develope a SMTP bandwidth limiter
too, although I do not need it.

I have to share my bandwidth with more people and sometimes I collapse
the Internet connection for several minutes when downloading my email.
Now I can set a limit and The Bat! will never exceed that limit.

This limit apply for each account, so if two accounts are to be
checked, you cannot specify "10 kB/s for the sum of both" but you must
say "10 kB/s for each". It is quite a hard limitation, but I do not
plan to complicate further than this.

If you find this useful, let me know and we'll see...

Best regards,

Fernando Nájera

v. 2 IMAP freezes program

2003-09-11 Thread Christopher LaFond
Trying this again, since no one picked it up the first time:

Using The Bat! v2.00.6 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600
Service Pack 1

Since I changed to v.2, the one account that I have which is IMAP
freezes the program most (but not all) of the time when I click on the
Inbox. The program stops responding. If it doesn't stop responding
when I click on the Inbox, it freezes when I click on one of the
message headers that it has downloaded (though I have it set for full
synchronization, with the Inbox subscribed, so I should get more than
just headers), but then I click on a message and it freezes then too.

This happens about 50% of the time, and often, I will have to force
the program to quit. If I switch to do something else and come back to
it later, occasionally it has corrected itself.

Does anyone know what's going on? I don't have this problem with the
POP accounts that I have.

Chris

I'm not using v2 but I've read that one has to convert all existing v1 IMAP
accounts to POP3 prior to updating to v2, because its IMAP support is
entirely rewritten and completely different.

*Exactly*!! and Exactly why this is a Bad Thing (tm). When I drive
my car, and if I run over someone, I am personally held liable for my
actions in court. If I use my computer and it becomes infected with a
virus because I like to open every attachment (because somebody said
they love me), which in turn sends nasty little virus laden e-mails to
everyone in my address book, I'm not held accountable except by maybe
one of my recipients.

We as techies have the unfortunate burden of trying to educate the

suffers. See:

Please include a signature delimiter in your messages. This consists
of a , i.e., a '-- ' by itself on a line.
This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without
the signature and list footers since everything below and including
the sig delimiter is excluded when quoting.

You can easily automate this process by including the sig delimiter

I haven't yet seen the space disappear in v.2, but this is
something I found occasionally in v.1. I think it was operator
error (Who? Me?) in that going to the --(space) line and pressing
END seeks the end of the line (without the terminating space).
The message is then sent without the space.

I have seen no incoming trouts (or threats of trouts) so I guess
my templates are OK. I am now going to tempt fate (and the
moderators) by going to the --(space) line. When I'm there, I
will press END and then I'll send the message. Let's see if that

Ditto. The internal backup will *probably* save all the registry

how to recover mail from part0001.bin?

2003-09-11 Thread Samson
Hello tbudl,

for some reason my message.tbb (of a POP account) got corrupted this
morning and many mails in inbox got lost. i tried folder/maintainance
and repair the folder. it didn't get me back those missing mails.
however it created a "part0001.bin" file in the mail folder.

my question is, is it possible to recover mail back from part0001.bin?
i tried to rename it to message.tbb but nothing shows up.

thanks in advance.

Some feature requests

2003-09-11 Thread Ricardo van Eck
Hello all,

Novell made there GroupWise API's available for other software
developers. A GroupWise plugin for The Bat! would be great! When I
can connect The Bat! to a GroupWise Server I don't need two
clients anymore (GroupWise client and The Bat!) And since GroupWise
is the second most used Enterprise Collaboration solution it should
be wanted by more batters (I think)

Also a Linux version of The Bat! (ok, this isn't a small request) :)

I want to drop Windows, but The Bat! is keeping me from doing that. I
read that The Bat! under Wine isn't that great. Maybe some other
  Batters have tried this?

Last request. I'd like to see a Calender, like there was in some
previous beta's. That calender should have CAP support. (Calender
Access Protocol). It a new protocol that most calender, e-mail
client developers are going to use. (except MS because of marketing
reasons). It lets you send appointment and other calender stuff
between different e-mail clients. Very neat :)

Until now, only GroupWise 6 and 6.5 supports it, but more are coming!

If this has been happening from the outset and isn't something that

Is there such a thing with TB!? The reason I wonder is because I have
trouble recalling anytime when only bug fixing occurs between versions.
Usually new features are being added. So there's never really a time
when you can say that a particular version contains features that
have all been tested for a long time and fully debugged.

OK, since nobody seems to have ideas about what's going on, I'll chime

Dial-Up, TB and Firewalls

2003-09-11 Thread malexander
Hi

Just a point I wanted to make as I've seen one or two comments where
people have said with The Bat, and with dial-up, they don't need a
firewall.

Sorry, but you're leaving yourself open if you don't use at least a
software firewall, even with a dial-up. I have dial-up ISDN, and
anyone who thinks they won't get attacked if they have a dial-up
connection is welcome to look at some of the logs from my Outpost
firewall.

It doesn't take very long for someone to grab a port and do some
damage.

So, if you've got dial-up, still get the firewall and be safe.

The last day or so has been fine now. But then this has happened
