Sorry Allie, should've really mentioned that I did check this too.
There was actually no font selected in the above preference so I
selected one and it changed in the preference window but didn't do
anything in the main TB gui (very confused). At this point I re-installed
the whole thing (hoped to avoid this but...) and it's all ok now.

Just wanted to say thanks for the reply.

Solved this by running POPFile as a service, using the non-win version
of POPFile, cygwin and cygrunsrv.

This should work great now..

Trying to delete three messages. Delete key does not work. Selecting
all three, right-click, Delete not working.

Synchronize all folders doesn't help. Shut down TB, restart, connect to
IMAP server, try again.

*TWO* of the messages will delete, but not a third one.

There are all three test messages (testing Read filters) in plain text

OK. Manual is better than nothing, I suppose... :)

Not my experience. But I could have done something wrong. I will test
this some more. How are you marking items as read?

I wouldn't mind making *ALL* filters (for my IMAP/non-mail accounts)
Read filters. I set them up to work only when a message is UnParked AND
UnFlagged, so as I read mail (all in Inbox) messages get moved unless I
mark them. <-- this is working fine in 1.62r, by the way.

Well, like I said, I'll be happy if I can get autofiltering on READ
messages to work.

What about folders that are not on the server? Are they automatically
created during the sync process? What about folders set to NOT sync? It
looks like moving items to folders not set to sync marks the item for
deletion. I will double-check that behavior, but that is what I want -
if I move a message to a common folder for reference/archiving/etc.,
marking it for deletion on the server - only after the move - would be
great.

This would allow messages to download throughout the day to my desktop
and still allow access remotely - using Read or manual filters on the
desktop, messages wouldn't get moved until I read/processed them, so
they wouldn't be deleted.

Hope that makes sense.

kg>> Is there a way to download mail from an IMAP account and move it to a
kg>> local folder with a filter? This seems like a reasonable request. ;)

> We'll have to patient where this is concerned.

Read filters and manual processing is good enough for me for now :) I
can be patient if the read filters will work. I have not installed any
betas yet (clean, fresh install of CE)... maybe that is why the read
filters didn't work?

> Currently, I use server side filters in addition to local read filters
> to filter my mail.

What do you mean by server side filters? If you're talking about
server-side admin because you have full access to your mail server, then
never mind - I don't have that kind of access.

No. Autofiltering of newly added mail to the INBOX should be possible.

They most definitely do. In fact, currently, anything you do with
messages locally are reflected on the server when synchronising. So
manual filtering, flagging, moving and copying of messages, all when
done locally, is reflected server side during the sync process.

kg> Is there a way to download mail from an IMAP account and move it to a

We'll have to patient where this is concerned.

Currently, I use server side filters in addition to local read filters

Should Sorting Office work with IMAP accounts? Because in v1.62r
filters work fine, but in v2.02.3 CE filters (both Incoming and Read) do
not work for IMAP accounts.

Now, knowing what I know about the IMAP protocol (admittedly, that's not
much...) is this the way IMAP accounts are *supposed* to be handled by
TB? That is, if IMAP is for managing mail on the server, the local
filters don't make sense?

Is there a way to download mail from an IMAP account and move it to a
local folder with a filter? This seems like a reasonable request. ;)

If I manually move a message to a local folder (Common folder) while
connected to the IMAP server, that message gets marked for deletion.
This is what I want. But can I get this using Sorting Office?

Obviously, I don't want to manually apply all my filters.

It _is_ wrong. See my other messages in this thread, where I clearly
demonstrate that 1) there is actually _nothing_ in RFC2045 preventing
a MUA from encoding low ASCII characters in whatever encoding and
forcing it to US-ASCII, and 2) failure to do that on MUA's part
results in various inconveniences for some users, and those
inconveniences are actually _not_ forced by RFC compliance. That's why
I describe this as "maybe wrong understanding of RFCs" on behalf of
MUAs' authors (not only those of The Bat!, seems to be).

FWIW, anyone setting up SpamPal on The Bat should shut down and re-start
TB after setting up an IMAP server the first time.

I thought it was an upgrade/latest version issue, but it happened again
with the second IMAP account I set up. I would get login errors trying
to connect to the IMAP server right after setting up the account.
Closing TB and re-starting fixed the problem.

You'll only need the same filter in all of your accounts.
You don't need a common feature, just check 'Execute action set of

No. That idea of mine didn't work. tbudl over-wrote what I had put in
Reply-to with its own address.

Thomas Fernandez, a long-time subscriber and poster, was saying, "For

situation about Reply-to already.

Try this for right now:

Set up a new message window and in the To: field copy this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

For the subject line copy this:

Re: Help with English expressions [was I kinda like my Bat :)]

Then do Select All on this post and copy-and-paste it into your new
message. That way you will be starting a new thread, where we can
answer your questions on tbot.

At least I hope that perhaps this will work.

I am sorry to be so late with this Reply. I had a long phone call from

I am trying Paul Cartwright's suggestion of a CC to tbot.

A tentative new name for the thread is in the subject line of this

In fact, that's _not_ what the RFCs say. See below.

That workaround is needed _only_ because The Bat! misinterprets the
RFCs (see below). That's an important part of my whole point.

TF> The work-around is therefore for an RFC, which I - as you - think
TF> should be altered. The correct way is to write to the author of the
TF> RFC rather than asking Ritlabs to violate it. I believe they have a
TF> right to be proud of their RFC-compliance. If an RFC doesn't make

The whole matter is this: I _don't_ think that RFC should be altered,
but I would like to take the liberty to say there is a wrong
understanding shown by The Bat!, and by the discussion participants,
of what _is_ said in that RFC. Let's have one more look at RFC2045
now. What does it say? It says:

"2.7. 7bit Data
"7bit data" refers to data that is all represented as relatively short
lines with 998 octets or less between CRLF line separation sequences
[RFC-821]. No octets with decimal values greater than 127 are allowed
and neither are NULs (octets with decimal value 0). CR (decimal value
13) and LF (decimal value 10) octets only occur as part of CRLF line
separation sequences.
2.8. 8bit Data
"8bit data" refers to data that is all represented as relatively short
lines with 998 octets or less between CRLF line separation sequences
[RFC-821]), but octets with decimal values greater than 127 may be
used. As with "7bit data" CR and LF octets only occur as part of CRLF
line separation sequences and no NULs are allowed."

To keep it short: "7bit data should _never_ ever contain 127 and up.
8bit data _may_ contain 127 and up."

Does it say "8bit data _should always_ contain 127 and up"? _No_.

Does it say "Whatever does not contain 127 and up _is always_ 7bit
data"? _No_.

When I type the Latin letter "t", am I typing "7bit data"? _Not
necessarily_. It may be represented as 7-bit, 8-bit, UTF-7, UTF-8...
Of course, if there is a Russian character in the same message, then
the message cannot be encoded as US-ASCII anymore - see RFC2045 above.
However, if there is nothing but low ASCII in that message, - please
show me why, based on the definitions from RFC2045 quoted above, it
cannot be encoded as 8bit KOI8-R, or Win-1252, or UTF-8...

Hope you get my point. Any high ASCII letter can never be 7bit data, -
that's right, and that's what RFC2045 says. What it does _not_ say is
that low ASCII (like the Latin letter "t") is intrinsically bound to
be represented as US-ASCII, and _not_ as KOI8-R or even UTF-8, for
that matter.

And I think it is not by chance. The RFC creator understood it very
clearly that if a character (like that poor "t" :) ) exists in various
encodings, then it can be encoded in any of those. Period.

Regards,
Maksym.

Nope - it's an email address I use only for Yahoo Groups, & since I'm
subscribed to very few Yahoo Groups where attachments aren't stripped,
there are very few attachments in that account. And there were *no*
messages in the folder, & only 822 within the entire account - perhaps
100 more before I purged it.

I have one folder where this happens. It is a folder with a lot of
attachments to the messages, usually MS Office files. It takes several
minutes to purge&compress. I'm serious, minutes. But eventually, the
process continues.

Maybe the folder where the maintenance center "freezes" over at your

Folder Maintenance freezes?

2004-01-25 Thread Deborah W
Several times when I've used the Folder Maintenance feature to purge &
compress folders, it has got part-way through, then frozen. It's not
finished, but it's not moving. Leaving it for several minutes makes no
difference, & although the "stop" button appears to be available, it
doesn't do anything. Clicking on the X to close the window works.
Repeating the procedure results in a freeze at the same place, & when
I exclude that account, it just freezes on another account. Exiting TB
& re-starting it seems to have solved the problem.

Bug?

Here you have a work-around that should solve your problem for the
time being.

But having read the discussion you kindly translated, I don't consider
it a bug in TB. Because TB behauves RFC-conform (if what was said in
the thread from the forum is true, I didn't check it).

The work-around is therefore for an RFC, which I - as you - think
should be altered. The correct way is to write to the author of the

right to be proud of their RFC-compliance. If an RFC doesn't make

Yes, spotted that when I looked at my message to Jean on this list. :/

Thanks a bunch. :) Well, I tried! I guess I could have put the Reply

Jean seems like an interesting addition to the TB! conversation group.
Also, by his full-quote rule violation, I judge he's pretty new to

Yep. Looks exactly so.

TF> That sounds wrong.

For me too. However, based on the bug No. 2343 which I also mentioned,
as well as on the Russian discussion I mentioned on the bugtraq, some
people think this behaviour (completely unacceptable for me) is
absolutely OK.

TF> But let me ask you *how* you have set TB to the first setting to being
TF> with.

Well, there is that "Use Character set" in account templates, as well
as "Message encoding" when composing a message... If I choose a
charset in those 2 places, I think that means I want to be in the
specified charset, and since it is an 8-bit charset, I think it also
means I want it to be "Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit". (To be
strict, I don't think I indicate "Content-Type: text/plain" directly
anywhere, - I simply use a plain text message editor. but thanks God,
The Bat! does not change that anyway :))) ). You may also want to have
a look at the bugtraq link I provided, where I list in every detail
the steps required to reproduce this. By the way, a fellow TBUDL
subscriber has already added a note there saying it's the same with
Latin-9 (ISO-8859-15) encoding.

Of course, feel free to ask for any additional info.

The following are thing s you may be not so interested in, but still.
I will now quote some parts of those discussions here (in my English
translation). Those are public discussions anyway, so I think that's
OK.

First, there was a discussion at
http://www.forum.nobat.ru/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=1361
, from which I myself got first information on that problem. People
complained about this sort of TB! behaviour, saying it is still the
same with Windows-1251 charset, it is still the same if you include
"%charset" in your templates, whatever.

same logic as The Bat!. Same for Becky. So don't tell me this is

JS> Are you suggesting that this question is better for tbot than for tbuld?

Yes, I really think it is. Are you subscribed there? If not, here's
the "mail to:" address for subscribing:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

In addition, I've included a "Reply to:" address in my headers, to make it
easy for you to Reply to this e-mail on tbot rather than on tbudl.

Of course, it's possible that the moderators would not regard this
conversation as off-topic for tbudl. Sometimes my mind--out of being
wary of transgressing :) --interprets tbudl's rules more strictly than
the moderators do. :)

Also, Miguel is not subscribed there--he doesn't have time for that
extra list. So, since you were originally Replying to a MAU (Miguel)
posting, it was entirely appropriate for you to ask your questions for
the first time on this list, where the expressions that were puzzling
you were being used. I just thought that now, we might move it to
tbot. In case there were some more expressions that you wanted to have
explained.

All the best to you, Jean. :)

will put an entry in the RunOnce regkey when you start TB. It will
delete the entry if TB is closed normally. The idea is that TB starts

This is a metaphor: his hands are hovering over--meaning, in a
position just above--these keys on the keyboard. It means he'll go on
using them rather than go through the long process of learning a new
(although possibly better) way.

JS> Oh heck, I've just got sucked into the wonders of WindowBlinds

"Oh heck" is a mild euphemism for "Oh hell."

To get "sucked into" something means to have been fooled or lured into
it, against one's better judgment.

"The wonders of WindowBlinds" is a partly ironic expression. He's
fascinated, but it's going to take up so much of his time to learn to
use this program that he's rueful, also.

JS> And

JS> in "I do, but YMMV" What stands YMMV for

YMMV stands for "your mileage may vary." Again, this is a figure of
speech, taken from the automobile industry. It means, in this context,
that "you may not have the same experience which I've had with this."

JS> Thanks for help

My pleasure, if it is truly a help! I'm retired from teaching
elementary school--the last 10 years of my service was with 10-,11-, and
12-year-old youngsters in the sixth grade.

I hope--given this background--that I haven't "talked down" to you.

My undergraduate degree is in English Literature. I love to the point
of passion dealing with words and their backgrounds and meanings. :)

Also, I know this is Off-Topic. Apologies in advance of the inevitable
moderator's reminder. Shall we take this to tbot without being told
to, Jean?

How can I access the memo field? My view menu (2.02.3CE) doesn't show
the memo auto-view function. How can I access it? The solution above
may not be "elegant", but it's good enough for me if I can get it to

Fwd: Bug (maybe wrong understanding of RFCs): an encoding selected by the user sometimes silently replaced with 7-bit US-ASCII

2004-01-25 Thread Maksym Kozub
I sent this message on TBTECH first; it seems however that there is
almost nobody reading the tech list, so I decided to resend it here. I
recently submitted the problem described in this message as a bug
(https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/bug_view_advanced_page.php?bug_id=0002349);
decided to also report on the list though - it would be interesting to
hear what other people think. Hope it's still not too technical for
TBUDL :).

If you choose an 8-bit encoding for your outgoing messages, but the
message actually does not contain any symbols with decimal values
higher than 127, then TB! would just make it "Content-Type:
text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit", when
queuing that message in Outbox.

Some people think this is the corrrect behaviour, and they refer to
RFC2045 et al. Somebody even reported a bug
https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/bug_view_advanced_page.php?bug_id=0002343 -
"Possibility to leave definition of 8 bit charset in case of message
with 7-bit only without resetting to "us-ascii"" I still consider it
definitely a logical mistake, and a serious one, since RFCs say octets
with decimal values of 127 and up are not allowed in 7-bit data, but
no one RFC says 0-127 should never be encoded as 8-bit - characters
themselves are not intrinsically "7-bit" or "8-bit".

As a result of this behaviour combined with some other MUAs' (e.g.
Microsoft-made ones') improper behaviour, there is the following
problem reported by various people. Suppose I send a message to my
Ukrainian friend in Canada, and he replies in Russian. I know his MUA
would try and put in the headers of his reply the same encoding as my
message had. To save him time on checking, I would indicate I want
_every message of mine_ (even if it's plain English only!) to be
"Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r / Content-Transfer-Encoding:
8bit", _which is perfectly legal in my view, as explained above. I
compose my message indicating "KOI8-R" as the charset to be used,
but... looking in the Outbox, I see "Content-Type: text/plain;
charset=us-ascii / Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit" there!

Hope you get my point. www.livejournal.com uses UTF-8 for all those
webpages, even though I do not use any Chinese or other double-byte
characters in my blog there. I consider this to be a good example:
characters, be they English, Ukrainian, Chinese, or whatever, are not
"7bit", "8bit", "double-byte", etc. They _can_ be _encoded_ in various
ways; and other than for those cases where it is just plainly
impossible to encode them in a specific way (like it is impossible to
encode Russian as 7bit), - standards do not prohibit us from using
anything. So, seeing a good, standards-compliant, mail client like
TB!, which calls itself "mail servant" :), I would like it to respect
my will, _or_ at least to produce a warning when it changes (again,
without a valid, standards-based reason!) what I've set as my default
charset.

Would you agree with that?..

My apology for this letter being rather long, - at least I hope it is
not completely boring for everybody :).

Maksym.

Hmmm...not really. I keep one folder for all personal correspondence,
