There is a slightly awkward way of doing it, that is to type (c ) (which has an
extra space between the "c" and the ")") and then go back and delete that
space. The required (c) then stays .

Yes, I am using the 32-bit version so that I can use MyMacros. It doesn't work

My experience is that pressing "Decrease indent" after the desired initial
indented and numbered paragraphs breaks the automatic indenting and numbering.

Also if you put a space before your first line starting with 1. it doesn't
indent. You can then go back and delete that initial space and manually create
lines starting with 2. , 3. , etc without them becoming indented as well. Like
this:
1. First line, started with a space that I then deleted after writing the "1."
2. Second line, manually entered "2.", no initial space needed, no automatic
indenting or numbering occurred
3. And so on.

That's because it's IMAP.

Wikipedia tells us (amongst other things) that:

When using POP, clients typically connect to the e-mail server briefly, only
as
long as it takes to download new messages. When using IMAP4, clients often
stay
connected as long as the user interface is active and download message
content
on demand. For users with many or large messages, this IMAP4 usage pattern
can
   result in faster response times.

and that:

IMAP4 clients need to maintain a TCP/IP connection to the IMAP server in
order
to be notified of the arrival of new mail.

So I think it just comes with the change in protocol

Saving a TB! shortcut

2018-11-07 Thread Robin Anson
Hi Batfolk,

I am having trouble saving an editor shortcut.

I want to assign CTRL+/ in the message editor to Utilities>Character
case>Capitalise.

I can successfully create the shortcut using the customise>shortcuts, and I
have tested that it works. However, when I close TB and open it again, the
shortcut has been lost.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Perhaps the shortcuts are stored in a file that doesn't have write permissions
on it - does anyone know where they are stored?

This is a quick template that that I created to parse an address list.
It might be useful for you. As written, of course, it assumes it has
the handle "ParseAddressList".

%Rem=^

Usage:
   %QInclude(ParseAddressList,"")

Returns:
%_FirstAddress: first address from the list
%_RemainingAddressList: address list without the first

^%-
%-
%_FirstAddress=""%-
%_RemainingAddressList=""%-
%If:'%_1'<>''%-
:'%setpattregexp=#^((?(?=")"[^"]*")[^;,]*)[;,\s]*(.*?)[;,\s]*$#%-
%regexpblindmatch="%_1"%-
%_FirstAddress=+%subpatt="1"+%-
%_RemainingAddressList=+%Subpatt="2"+'%-
:''%-

The list of addresses you might feed it could be "%To,%CClist"

Actually, that is what I do.

I have discovered that if I execute the QT manually, i.e. I type it's

Quick templates and html

2014-04-07 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

Has anyone any experience with using html templates and quick
templates together?

I have to use html for business purposes (company standard) and I have
an extensive set of quick templates that I use for formatting emails
etc. However the two do not seem to mix well.

When I use my existing templates with an html message template, I end
up with a host of delimiters and blank lines in the message that
simply don't appear in a plain text message.

I have noted, for instance, that if I include a line in the html
message template containing only the following characters
%-
it produces a blank line in message. In a plain text message it
produces no output. Unfortunately I use lots of such lines in my quick
templates to help make it readable

I haven't yet sorted out why the delimiters I use in my quick
templates (e.g. ", ', %, $, ^, etc) appear in the output when I use an
html message template.

I've never understood what this is intended to mean. Hide items if _what_ is not

changed behaviour of copy/move in v5

2013-03-29 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I have recently upgraded to v5 of TB!. In v4, when moving a message I think the
window to select the destination highlighted the current folder (or perhaps the
root of the account?). Anyway, when moving a message from the inbox I could
simply type the name of the receiving folder and it would find the folder of
that name in the current account.

I v5, however, it seems to remember the last destination of a move. So now when
I type the name of the receiving folder, it often finds the folder of that name
in a subsequent account, because the starting position was after the desired
receiving folder.

I have tried adjusting the option "Remember the last destination of copy/move
operations for each folder", but it seems to make no difference.

Ideally I think I would like to go back to the v4 behaviour.

Is anyone else troubled by the same problem? If so, have you found a
work-around?

Rad filters don't work

Batfolk,

I have recently upgraded from version 4 of TB to version 5. I have a number of

If I set TB to mark messages as read when they are opened in a new window, the
filter works as expected.

Is this a known problem? Is there a solution?

Yes, it's what TB displays when it doesn't like the incoming message. If I
open the attached "Message.html" it opens fine in my browser, but presumably
the html breaks some standard that the browser is flexible about. Or perhaps
there is a real bug?

I have one called "TopPost" that looks a bit like an MS Exchange reply. It
also calls a signature template (called "Sig"), you could just replace it with
your standard signature:

You can use all sorts of characters. I have used " ' ^ % ! + | # @ and

Try using another delimiter, like this
%Subject=^Jigsaw Puzzle "^

The macro will recognise the first ^ as the delimter and then include

If you don't want to use html, you have to use plain text, I don't believe

Account folder always starts expanded

2011-09-04 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

For some reason the account folder structure of one of my accounts always
opens in the account pane expanded. All other accounts open as they were when
I closed TB, but this one has, over the last week or two, refused to do so.

Does anyone know where the information about the account pane is stored? I was
thinking of deleting that file and seeing if it will recreate so that the
account behaves properly.

Alternatively, does anyone know what might be causing this behaviour?

It sounds as though you are using the Windows editor, not the MicroEd editor.

I am running v4.2.42 and I have no problems with it except that it is
about time we had a more capable html editor. Everything else works
fine, and I make extensive use of filters, templates and customised
quick templates.

I don't make any use of the scheduler though, so can offer no opinion
on that.

Not in my setup.

I have combined delivery set (in Account Properties->Transport) and it
has always been the case that when I select "Put message in the
outbox" it gets sent on the next mail check. I have never used "Send
queued mail".

Of course, your configuration may be different to mine.

No, I am saying that the current line

CC:

Should be replaced by

%If:"%OCCList"<>"":"CC: %OCCList
":""%-

So that part of the template should look like:

From: %FromName <%FromAddr>
  To: %ToName <%ToAddr>
%If:"%OCCList"<>"":" CC: %OCCList
":""%-
Date: %ODateEn %OTimeLongEn
 Subject: %Subj
  Folder: %FolderName/%AccountName

(and here I have adjusted spacing somewhat to match what you already
have - you might need to adjust it further before the bit that says
'CC: %OCCList')

I am not sure why I have the %OCCList macro, but it works for me here.
The alternative is the %CCList macro which should also work.

Yes, put this in instead of the CC: line you currently have

%If:"%OCCList"<>"":"CC: %OCCList
":""%-

This breaks over two lines (so that if there is no CC you don't have a
blank line. It says that if the original CC list is not blank ("%OCCList"<>"")
print it followed by a new line. Otherwise print nothing.

You will probably also want to adjust the spacing a bit to match your
template

It works fine for me - I highlight the group in the address book and
select send message or I open a new message and from the "TO" bar I
select the addressbook and then do as you described above. Both ways
work without an error message.

Can't connect with TLS but error message seems wrong

2010-12-23 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I have an account that requires I connect to the POP server using TLS
to the dedicated port (995). It has been working fine for a long time,
but suddenly it won't connect and I get an error message that the
certificate has expired.

However, the account log shows the following:

 12/23/2010, 11:46:28: FETCH - receiving mail messages
 12/23/2010, 11:46:28: FETCH - Initiating TLS handshake

>sydmail01.commandhub.net, operati...@commadhub.com
!12/23/2010, 11:46:29: FETCH - TLS handshake failure. Invalid server
certificate (This certificate has expired).

which makes it appear that the certificate is still valid.

Needless to say people using Outlook can connect without problems, and
I set up Thunderbird and it connects. I merely had to accept that it
was a self-signed certificate (so the root was not trusted
automatically).

The people that run the server cannot see a problem.

My laptop clock is correct.

The only possible (long shot) source of a problem is that about the
time I started experiencing this problem I had updated AVG Free to the
latest version. At the time the problem started I was using AVG's
proxy servers, but even going directly to the POP server the problem
remains.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Does anyone have any ideas of how to get more information about the
problems?

Time format in message list display

2010-09-13 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I have recently installed TB on a Windows 7 64-bit laptop. Everything
works well, except that the time displayed in the Received and Created
columns in the message list is in a 12 hour format (e.g. 8:11 PM) when
the time format set for my laptop (under Settings > Control Panel >
Regional and Language) is 24 hour format (i.e 20:11).

I have looked for every possible option in the configuration and
options and cannot find any way of changing this. Furthermore, it was
like this when I installed TB, then at some stage changed to the 24
hour format, but now has reverted to the 12 hour format.

Anyone got any ideas about this?

I use a combination of Popfile and the free version of AntispamSniper for TB.

I use Popfile to categorise into a total of 8 different work and personal
categories as well as spam. There have been 3,000 messages classified as spam,
and in that time there have been 34 false positives (classified as spam when
they are not) and 154 false negatives (classified as not spam when they are).

AntispamSniper has classified 5860 messages as spam since Feb 2006 with 116
false positives and, in that time, missed 961 (i.e. false negatives).

So Popfile is significantly more accurate, even when it has to choose between 9
different categories for the messages. 7.7% of messages end up categorised as
spam, which is the 4th largest classification.

Macros for TB!

2010-05-02 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I use MyMacros v1.11a for TB! I actually only use these macros for a single
function %InputBox which allows a quick template to request input when it runs.

I wanted to make more use of these macros and went to the help file to learn
more about them, but unfortunately when I try to open the help file I get a
message that says:

"Navigation to the webpage was canceled

  What you can try:
Retype the address. "

Which is not very helpful at all.

I tried downloading a copy of XMP macros, but the help file is only available in
German, and I am unable to understand it.

I followed the link on the Ritlabs web page to the UMX macros, but that appeared
to be a very complex set of macros, and didn't appear to include a way to input
text to my QTs like the %InputBox macro.

So my questions to the list are:
* What is your preferred choice in macros for TB! (and why)
* Does anyone have a working help file for MyMacros v1.11a in English?
* Does anyone know of an English help file for the XMP macros?

Send icon in message editor

2009-08-26 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I have just upgraded to v4.2. In earlier versions the leftmost icon in
the message editor reflected the setting for delivery type (under
Account properties -> Transport) of immediate or deferred.

However in v 4.2, by default the leftmost icon is the immediate send
icon (albeit with postponed sending options in the dropdown list).
This doesn't change if I set delivery type to be deferred.

Since I am a creature of habit, and I don't like this change, is there
a way to change the behaviour to that of the earlier version?

No, you need to use the macro %Setheader.("X-Newheader","string=n"). The

You'd reckon that would be _1_ day, 2 hours and 3 minutes . . . or is there

I wouldn't use something that stopped or blocked SPAM for me. I don't trust
anyone else to make the decision about whether something is SPAM because I
have seen a small number, but that is too many, of emails incorrectly
classified as SPAM.

However I use a combination of Popfile and Antispam Sniper for the Bat Free.

My experience was slightly different.

Like you, I found the FolderTabs.CDB file in my message base. I closed TB!
and renamed the file. When I opened TB! all accounts appeared with one level
of folders expanded. The FolderTabs.CDB file was automatically recreated (not
sure if it was on opening TB! or on subsequently closing it. Since then, all
accounts have been behaving as desired, i.e. they all remember the previous
state and reopen that way.

So for me the problem is now resolved.

It is my first account, so I thought I would reorder my accounts and see
whether moving my first account to second position would change things. The
non-remembering still applies to the same account, which is now in second

Account tree at start up

2009-05-26 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I have 6 accounts in TB. When I start the program 5 of them show the same
layout of folders as when I closed the account. That is, if the account was
collapsed showing no folders at all, that is how it opens up. Similarly, if
the account was expanded showing all the folders and subfolders, then when
TB starts up, that is what it shows.

However one of my accounts always opens up with all the first level folders
displayed and one of those folders expanded showing the next level of
subfolders. It does that no matter what it looked like when I closed it.

Can anyone suggest why that might be the case??

This was one reason I made use of the memo field to store secondary email
addresses. Miguel hates this because it relies heavily on regular
expressions, but if you have a bit of patience you might like to try it.

Firstly include the line:

%QInclude(Add_CC)%-

in your New Message, Reply and Forward templates for your accounts.

Then in your address book entry include one email address in the usual
place and include the second email address in the memo field (on the
"Other" tab) in this form on a line by itself:

per...@otherdomain.com

It doesn't have to be the only information in the memo tab, just by itself
on one line.

Then you need to set up the following quick templates. There are 4 of them,
and you need them all. They call one another in a chain and the effect is to
look for secondary addresses like the one above and automatically add them
in the CC field. If you were to put the address between BCC tags like this:
per...@otherdomain.com
the address would be added to the BCC field.

If there are multiple recipients in the TO or CC fields, the macros will do
this for each person.

Copy and paste the contents between the marked Start and End lines. Please
make sure that long lines do not get wrapped in the Quick Template editor.

The first macro is called "Add_CC" (without the quotes of course).

[ Start Add_CC ]
%REM="
Include secondary addresses noted in memo field between or tags.

[ Start FindTknType0 ]

As Miguel suggested, it relies on regex. So perhaps "relatively easy"
depends upon your desire to play around with regex!

The basic macro is very similar to the one that Maurice showed in
mid:1974229872.20090304125...@hypercube.demon.nl

The macro I use to extract the information from the memo field is

 [ Macro: Get_Memo_Attribute ]
%Rem='

Usage:
   =%QInclude(Get_Memo_Attribute,"Tag","Default_Value")

This will return the value from a line in the address book memo field
that looks like this:
   value

Or the "Default_Value" if no such line exists

'%-
%If:'%SetPattRegExp="(?im)^<%_1"%RegExpMatch="%ABToMemo"'='':'%_2'%-
:'%If:+%SetPattRegExp="(?im)^(<%_1/>)"%RegExpMatch="%ABToMemo"+<>++:++%-
:+%SetPattRegExp="(?im)^(?:<%_1>)(.*?)(?:)"%RegExpMatch="%ABToMemo"+'%-
 [ End Macro ]

I use this in a set of more complex macros that specify what information to
retrieve (by identifying the tag) and, if necessary, identifying a default
value so that I can deal with the case of no value being set.

The main complexity is that I have created macros that cater for a list of
multiple recipients. The macros will parse the list of recipients and
extract the attribute from each recipient's memo field and then take action
depending upon how many recipients have a value in the attribute, how many
different values there are, etc.

For instance, if one of the multiple recipients has a read or delivery
receipt set, it is applied to the message using this macro which recursively
processes each address in the recipient list.

 [ Macro: SetReceipts ]
%REM=^%-

Set read or delivery receipt notification flags if the
recipient's addressbook memo entry contains an attribute with the tag
with the value "read" or "delivery" respectively

^%-
%-
%REM="%-
%_SR_Text stores the original list of recipients
%_SR_Temp stores the list of recipients yet to be processed

%If:"%_DR_Flag"="yes":"%RcptConfirm":"%NoRcptConfirm"%-
%SetHeader("To","%_SR_Text")#%-
 [ End Macro ]

Other macros I use set the name(s) in the greeting at the top of the
message, choose the sig used at the end of the message, allow me to
automatically add CC or BCC addresses, etc

No, I have 21 GB of free space on the system drive and 51 GB of free space

It gets cleaned at boot up, so there is not much accumulating in it.
Furthermore if I reboot TB! the problem goes away and that doesn't change
the temp folder.

It seems more like a memory leak or some sort of internal space problem, but
TB! doesn't seem to be using a lot of memory (at least not based on the

Oops. Now I have found it, and also realise that the above location is
also wrong for v3.99. I actually searched the archives and found a
response from Marek Mikus to Dave Goodman back in March 2006 that
pointed to autocomplete at

Not really intuitive, but it gives you more functionality as a
compromise.

It may have something to do with your autocomplete setting. In your
version of TB! I think it is found under Options -> Preferences ->
System. Do you have address books in autocomplete?

I would test it on my system, but I have lost the location of the
autocomplete setting. Or rather Ritlabs moved it, and I can't find it

You don't need to change your listserv because your email address
remains the same. It's just that you create a new account in TB! to
access the email.

You will need to modify your filters though.

I used to run the TB plugin for Google desktop, and it left some sort
of an index file in the folder on the disk. So when I told TB to wipe
a TB folder and remove it from the disk, it couldn't because the
folder on disk was not empty.A subsequent CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-L would
find that empty folder.

Yes, it does. There are 4 dictionaries listed (accent.tlx,
correct.tlx, Ssceam.tlx and UserDic.tlx). When I open a new message,
it always defaults to accent.tlx, although setting it to UserDic
seems to stick while a message is open.

However, despite this, when I try to add a word to the dictionary,
the word is still noted as misspelt, although now that I look
at the dictionary, the word has been added.

Can't add words to the spell check dictionary

2008-02-20 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I am having a problem adding words to the spell checker dictionary.
It works fine as long as I have American English selected as the
language, and it works if I have both American and British English
selected, but not if I have only British English selected.

I also note that the default dictionary to add word to is accent.tlx
rather than userdic.tlx which is, I believe, the one that should be
used.

I am using the SSCE spell checker. I have no idea how to use either
or the other options since I can't find any information about them,
so I can't test to see whether the problem extends to these.

Anyone else experience this problem? Or have any ideas how to resolve
it?

It should read something like:
Date: 11 Feb 2008 15:42:09 CET

A more complete specification for the date syntax can be found in RFC 2822 (the
Internet
message format standard). In summary, it allows for:
   * optional day-of-the-week (3 character) followed by a comma
   * 1 or 2 digit day number
   * 3 character month name
   * 4 digit year (although it allows for the obsolete 2 digit year
  form)
   * 2 digits each of hour, minute and seconds, separated by ":"
   * Timezone expressed as + or - followed by 4 digits (although it
allows for a range of obsolete codes including 3 character
  codes like CET)

What it doesn't permit is the "-" between the date elements that you
have identified above.

It is a function of TB, but it looks from the above as though it is
not correctly formatted in the original message itself. To check,
highlight the message and then press CTRL-SHIFT-K to show the
headers. Then find the header that starts with "Date:", copy the
entire line and paste in an email for us to see. The format should be
Date: DDD, DD MMM HH:mm:ss ZZZ

For instance, in your email the header says
Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2008 09:26:28 GMT

> How do I get it to show the correct date?

If the problem is an incorrect format, you can export the file to a
unix mailbox format, edit the format to correct it and then re-import
the message. If you are more daring you could edit the messages.tbb
file in the appropriate mail folder directly, but that is more risky.

I have used Popfile for several years very satisfactorily, but I use

I also use Antispamsniper for The Bat as a backup program, although in

I have a suspicion that when called from the main screen, TB! just
looks for the first entry in the address book with the particular
email address. So if all 3 entries have the same email address,
although you call the joint entry by nickname, it still goes back and
finds Joe's solitary entry when looking for the template to use.

Try changing the email address (temporarily) in the address book entry
for him alone, and creating an email from the main screen. If it then
goes to the AB template from the joint entry (or even the one for Sue
alone) it will prove this to be the case.

Actually the other way around! If you check it, the version of the

You can export those emails to a Unix mailbox format and then edit the
date on the first line of each email. This line starts with the word
"From" but is not followed by a colon, then has the sender and the
received date and time. If edit the date and time and then re-import
the messages, it will fix the problem.

I have experienced something similar recently, but only once.
Interestingly it only happened on one account, the other two accounts
could send perfectly well. However all accounts use the same SMTP
server!

Same here.

There my experience was different. When I shut down my laptop and
rebooted it some time later, the message was sent.

Nothing that suggests a solution I'm afraid.

I suspect the simplest way is not to configure the REPLY-TO field at
all. It is only needed if the REPLY-TO is different to the FROM
address. If they are the same, then leave the REPLY-TO blank in each
of the account properties configurations.

You could create an "IGNORE" group in your address book and set a
filter condition of "Address group IGNORE contains sender". Then you
simply have to right click on the FROM field in instance of an email
from this sender and add the name to this group in your address book.

FWIW, from the Oxford Dictionaries "Ask Oxford.com"

"British spelling has always recognized the existence of variant
spellings using the suffix -ize/-ise. When American spelling was
standardized during the 19th century (mainly through the efforts of
the great American lexicographer Noah Webster), the consistent use
of -ize was one of the conventions that became established.
However, since then, the -ise spellings have become more popular in
Britain (and in other English-speaking countries such as
Australia), perhaps partly as a reaction against the American
custom. Spellings such as organisation would have struck many older
British writers as rather French-looking. The Oxford English
Dictionary favoured -ize, partly on the linguistic basis that the
suffix derives from the Greek suffix -izo, and this was also the
style of Encyclopaedia Britannica (even before it was
American-owned) and formerly of the Times newspaper.

"The main advantage of the modern -ise habit? Lazy spellers do not
have to remember that there are several important words which
cannot properly be spelt with -ize. These include words which are
not formed by the addition of the -ize prefix to a stem, but by
some other root which happens to end in the same syllable, such as
-vise (as in televise), -cise (as in incise), and -prise (as in
   comprise).

"The American system resulted in the creeping of z into some other
words where it did not originally belong. Writers of American
English should be aware of some spellings that are regarded as
incorrect in the UK, notably analyze."

I ended up changing the permissions in the registry so that
applications were able to read, but not write, to that particular key.
The only (relatively minor) problem with that is I have to reverse the
process each time MS issues an Outlook patch and then reinstate the
changes afterwards.

Under the account properties, select Transport and then in the
Connection box under Receive Mail select either "Secure to regular
port (STARTTLS)" or "Secure to dedicated port (TLS)". TLS is the
successor to (and compatible with) SSL.

This says:
If the first name in the TO address (%ToFName) exists
   then
  use it
   otherwise
if the address book handle is not blank
 then
if the address book handle is different to the address
   book first name,
   then
  use the address book handle
   otherwise
use the address book first name
otherwise (if the address book handle is blank)
use the address book first name

You don't seem to have quoted the entire part. The next line or
perhaps more are required. What you have there says use the first name
of the address if it exists. If it doesn't, then if the address book
handle is present ... but what to do in that case appears on the next
lines.

Presumably the address book handle contains the person's common name
(i.e. Jim instead of James). Unfortunately that is pretty restricted
because each one address book handle must be unique if it is not
blank.
