Re: (Sort of) New User Questions

Thanks Jernej!

I've looked at the Editor/Viewer options a million times and must've skipped
over HTML Viewer. Once I disabled that everything fell into place, including
how my adding attachments.

As for changing the email address of this list, it was right where you said it
would be - thanks very much for the link.

Appreciate the help.

(Sort of) New User Questions

2022-06-09 Thread Fred Weissman

After many (many!) years of using v2, I finally ungraded to v10. Needless to
say, there have been a few changes, most of which I have figured out. Here are
a couple with which I need help.

1- I'm  a plain-text person, not HTML. I will use it for email when absolutely
necessary. I want my new messages -and- my replies to be in plain-text. Where
and what are the proper settings to make this the default no matter what format
the reply is?

2- Perhaps related to #1, when I add an attachment to a new message or a reply,
it becomes part of the body of the message. In v2 I was to have attachments as
icons in a pane to the left of the message editor. Again, how can I make this
the default?

3- In regards to this mailing list (TBUDL) how can I change my email address? I
signed up with one address, but am now needing to change to another.

Thanks.

IE4.0 gives errors. IE6 should display perfectly. Could you possibly
do a "View source" and send me the results off-list?

Hi, Thursday, June 27, 2002 20:13

OK. I installed both Beonex and Netscape 7.0 for a tryout.
Beonex has the look and feel of Netscape 7.0 but seems to be faster.

The FAQ page displays with Beonex and with Netscape 7.0, just fine.

The FAQ page does not display under either Netscape 4.7 or IE 6.0.
I get javascript errors and a blank page in both cases.

I think Beonex is going to be my new default browser.

Well... more like a certain age limit on the emails itself. If you
right click the mail ticker next time it is up, go to "Messages" then
"Age Limits". Set a value. After a certain period of time, the age
of the message is met, and it is removed from the ticker. Which, in
theory, if it's the last message, should hide the ticker again.

Probably Outlook Express . TB is a plain text email client. You
can't set character attributes in plain text. You have to use ASCII
emphasising like *bold*, /italic/, _underline_ and SHOUTING. This is
actually the only way to ensure that the person receiving your message
can understand the stresses where they appear. Let's face it, email is
about who we are sending it to, not about what we see. The best of all
worlds is where we can guarantee that what we see is what we send is
what the recipient sees. The Bat! is one of the best in the world at
that job.

> Is a local font change possible? Am I missing something?

That's a matter of changing the editor preferences. It won't affect
what you send. Also, again because of the plain text limitation and
because of the "column formatting" capabilities of the editor, you are
restricted to using fixed width fonts in the editor. You may be able
to get hold of some alternatives. One favourite is Andale Mono,
available from the MS downloads site.

> ... It would be much nicer to have it open a "new-mail list"

It is one. Just enable the "Message list" of the "Browse ticker
messages" folder view window that opens when you double click on the
ticker.

No, but I keep mine "minimal" by shrinking it to the smallest possible
width and sliding it off the edge of the screen so that only a half
inch of it is visible.

I believe the FAQ is run by one of the moderators on this list, and not by
RitLabs themselves... Maybe Marck can answer that one ;)

Bold as in the person you're sending it to sees bold? That is HTML formating,
and TB doesn't send in html (yet). If you mean locally, there is an option
under Options - Editor Preferences I think where you can change your locally
viewed windows, but this has no affect on the recipient of the email.

Next time you double click to bring up a message, go to View - Message list (I
think that's the option). It'll then display all the unread messages that are
being shown in the ticker.

> Also, the silly banner won't go away unless I read all the messages. Isn't

You can set a timer on the message ticker so it goes away after a certain amount
of time. With the timer up, I think you can right click on it, and there are a
set of properties you can modify.

Hope these help a little.

When I imported messages from OE5.5, the Import wizard didn't ask
where the files were -- it just needed to know that I wanted to import
from OE.

I think OE can export to .eml files, right? If so, then just rename
the .eml files to .msg (I have a VBScript to automate the renaming
process, let me know if you're interested.) You can import .msg files
quite easily.

TB's trial is fully functional. It must be the OE version.

You seem to deal with a lot of mail in archives. For that task, many
people on another list swear by a program called Mailbag Assistant
. It works with many
mailers, including OE and TB. The list where I first heard about it
is the Power Tools Software list on Yahoo groups. You can check out
the webpage at
The owner occasionally runs contests for members. You should ask him
about this month's contest and promotions.

I'd like to see if this works before I register.

There should be no problem doing that. Check out Tools -> Import
Wizard.

Not that I know of. Each folder in TB is a different message base.
If you notice a folder is too slow, you can just split the messages
into two (or more) folders and the speed should be improved.

Also, make sure you use the "Purge all folders" option regularly.
When you delete a message, it is only marked as deleted. When you use
the Compress option, the deleted messages are actually removed. The
Purge option applies the limits you might have defined in the
folder properties and then runs the compress option.

The general search tool can be accessed by pressing . It can do
what you're asking.

TB also offers a quick search tool. In the message list, just start
typing the word/name you're looking for and the first match will be
automatically selected. To move to the next match, just hit
-. This tool is limited to only the current folder.

TB can warn against or disable execution of predefined file-types.
Check out:
 Options -> Preferences -> Warnings

TB has the nicest multiple account handling of any mail program I've
seen. Each account is essentially completely separate from every
other account, though you can filter from one account to another
account's folders.

I don't know about any size limitation, but I do find The Bat faster
with large amounts of messages than OE. I remember that OE became very
slow (up to 5 seconds to open) with around 500 messages in one folder,
while TB displays folder with 6000 messages (threaded) in 2 seconds on
my computer (AMD 800, 256 MB ram).

Note that on importing, you may loose some messages - when I went from
OE to TB, I had about 5000 messages there, and I found 4 messages
corrupted.

TB has search capactibility for either one folder (with or w/o
subfolders), whole account or all accounts. You can choose where to
search, but you can't define separate strings to search for in
different fields (the string will be searched for in all selected
fields). You can use & and | as boolean search operators, or use
regular expressions for advanced searches. See Tools -> Search for
more info.

TB doesn't change the attachments. It won't execute them
automatically, and will warn you if the attachment is potentially
dangerous.

I replaced ZoneAlarm with Tiny Personal Firewall, because:
- ZoneAlarm took too many resources
- I didn't like it's yellow color :)

And I'm a long time Opera user (since 3.50). I just can't browse
without MDI anymore :)

NEW USER QUESTIONS

2001-12-01 Thread ETM

I am a brand new user, so please bear with me. I also want to apologize for
double-posting, my original post picked up a previous subject line and I
feel certain it has been lost in that thread.

I have about 3 Gig of email in my OE. Can that be imported into the BAT?
Is there any size limitation, beyond my own PC, to mail held in the BAT?

I tend to use mail as a filing system, maintain many folders/filters (and
successfully set them up this morning in the BAT and they are properly
working). OE permits searching from the top or from the individual folders
using simple search terms and different fields. Is there a similar search
capability for mail filed in the BAT?

In regard to the BAT's treatment of attachments, I have always filtered
attachments in OE as a protective mechanism because of its vulnerabilities
to problems. From one point I could more effectively handle treatment of
attachments. How does the BAT handle attachments, especially problem
attachments? I noticed that ZA renamed/disarmed an attachment downloaded
into BAT this AM, but wasn't positive that the mail program itself also
hadn't done something to render the attachment harmless.

I use Win98SE, will probably remain with IE5.50, although I might experiment
with Opera, and maintain an AV program and use Zone-Alarm-Pro since I am on
cable connection.

This AM program installation, setup, and subsequent download of my Yahoo
mail was my first occasion to use this program. I am a heavy user of
mailing lists, focusing on genealogy, and manage several of the Rootsweb
lists. I am probably dealing with on average 1,000 emails a day, so there
is some immediacy to my picking up the nuances necessary to managing my
mail.

I used four accounts, one with my cable system, three via yahoo pop3
download, into OE. I would like a similar set-up for the BAT.

Many thanks for help and suggestions.

Elaine

I, too, use Agent exclusively for newsreading, if for nothing else
but I needed multi-email account support from day one. My wife, then
girl friend, shared most of the same computers and all software on
them with me. In the early days, even my boss needed me to check
email for him from time to time.

While I agree I haven't seen one dual-purpose applications good
enough for me, I don't think it's by itself a bad idea, nor am I
against RIT's stated intention to try to make one. Email (with
mailing list in mind) and newsreading do command many of the same
functionality.

Again, it's a matter of development priority. For that matter, I
would agree newsreading ins't on top of my wish list.

This is only half true. Chinese (Mandarin) is as important over here

Yes and no. The European (Latin) lettering system is fine for
European lagnauges. There is a good reason that many Asian langauges

That was exactly what I meant, Thomas. Since I haven't even a remote
clue of any Asian language (well, that's an exaggeration, doesn't
matter), I *personally* never missed support for Asian characters.

BTW, you know that socio-linguistically speaking your "except maybe

language very successful. And it is a universally accepted "standard"
even used by many Asians. There is at least one good reason for this
which I won't explain in detail since everybody can look it up in a
textbook of linguistics (search for books by David Crystal): It is
much more versatile with much less symbols than for instance Chinese.

And no, I don't succumb to avoiding valid arguments or even the truth

So now, it would be good if *all* programmes supported all characters

First of, Fortes Agent 1.8 (which I am using) is so good - with really
only minor glitches, just say PGP support - that I think it does not
*need* any development. So that's for absolutes. But really I don't
need programme development if the programme is (virtually) perfect.

AFAIR the current version of Agent does not incorporate any big bugs.
And I haven't even heard of validated minor ones.

And secondly, Ming, is it verified that Agent will not be developed
any more? This is a great debate every so often on the Agent mailing
list and in the news groups. And the developer or someone close to him
will always chime in telling us there will be a v2 (timing like TB!).

I'm afraid not. You may move the whole toolbar around, but that's
it, so far.

You just hit another sour spot of TB here. It's for this very reason
proportional fonts has its appeal to me (for it can squeeze more
words into one line). For now, you can either choose a smaller font,
or use full-width preview pane.

I settle for the latter, and thankfully TB's flexibility in folder
arrangement makes life a little easier. I move folders that I used
the most to the top of each account, so the shorter account tree
isn't as inconvenient as it could be (as in other email clients that
insists on sorting folders alphabetically).

Re: Main Window in Bat! (was: Re[3]: more new user questions)

2000-09-19 Thread Januk Aggarwal

Hello Avenarius,

On Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at 01:50:38 GMT +0200 (which was 4:50 PM
where I live) witnesses say Avenarius typed:

Until today, I had never used the Ctrl-Shift-E shortcut. But you are
right, the position is not sticky. However, I don't know many
programs that remember settings to old arrangements after they've been
changed. However, I don't see your point about *needing* to toggle
this pane. If you're using the preview pane, then why do you want a
full message list? I'm not criticising. With such a strong
statement, I want to understand the logic before going into attack
mode (as Ming-Li pointed out). :-)

> The width of the account tree view does not stick either.

This one is sticky on my system.

Remember, this is not the Opera browser mailer. Other mailers may
have features that are not supported by TB. Likewise, many other
mailers don't have features that TB supports. Does this mean one is
inferior to the other? No, it reflects the priorities and the
decisions that the programmers have to make. It also means that we
end users have a large variety of choices of mailers that can suit our
needs. Switching from one program to another is usually difficult
simply because we grow accustomed to one style. What you must keep in
mind as you evaluate TB is, are there enough good points for you to
stick around?

As users, we must choose what is most important to us and find
the program that best suits our styles. No one program is likely to
have *everything* that a given individual wants. In the end, the
program will reflect the personality and the needs of the
developer(s).

TB is not known for the lack of keystrokes if you want to use the
keyboard shortcuts.

Have you sent in an official bug report? You can post it to the
TBBETA mailing list.

Main Window in Bat! (was: Re[3]: more new user questions)

2000-09-19 Thread Avenarius

Susanne, your English is perfect as far as I can say.

I have the same main window arrangement as you have (full height
account tree) and I'd say that the complaint that you have is one the
least aggravating aspects of The Bat's main window.

First of all, the window frames don't stick. No matter how high you
arrange your message preview window to be, you only need to hit
CTRL+SHIFT+E twice (as you must, sooner or later), and your customized
arrangement is gone forever.

The width of the account tree view does not stick either. Nor can you
temporarily *hide* the account tree view: in the Opera browser mailer
(!), this can be accomplished by a simple push of the F4 key (toggle).

And then, in case you'd like to see a different main window
arrangement in The Bat!, you need to hit the following keys:

ALT
V
O
O again [!; a glaring programmers' blunder (but it can be fixed in
60 seconds by Ritlabs)]
ENTER
[and finally, another letter to select the desired arrangement]

Ladies and gentlemen, SIX keys, you need to hit six keys in order to
change your window arrangement. And all of this could be accomplished
by a sensible keyboard shortcut of two keys at the most.

Is this the program that aspires to be the world's Nr. 1 mail client?

Not to mention the worst: after you return to your previous, to your
(would-be) default window arrangement (full height account tree) --
then all the frames positions are gone once more, because the window
frames did not stick and so you need to arrange them all over again.

This, for me, means that I cannot touch The Bat's main window at all.
It is totally immobile and inconfigurable because no matter what you
do, it always returns to the default setting pre-determined by
Ritlabs.

Let us patiently wait and hope.

Yours,
Alex. of Slovakia

A short(!) extract from the tin manual follows; Note the highly
misleading use of the word "easy" in the description, I rest my case:-)

tin, rtin, tind - A Usenet newsreader

SYNOPSIS
   tin [[-h|-H|-V] | [[[-a] [-dlnq|-Q] [-ArzX]] [[-R|-S] -s
   News-dir] [-cuvUZ] [-N|-M address] [-o|-w]][-D
   debug-level] [-G article-limit] [-f newsrc-file] [-g
   server] [-m Mail-dir] [-p port] [-I
   index-dir] [newsgroup[,...]]]

   rtin [[-h|-H|-V] | [[[-a] [-dlnq|-Q] [-AzX]] [-cvZ] [[-S]
   -s News-dir] [-N|-M address] [-o|-w]] [-D debug-level] [-G
   article-limit] [-f newsrc-file] [-g server] [-m Mail-dir]
   [-p port] [newsgroup[,...]]]

   tind [[-h|-H|-V] | [-d|-P|-v] [-D debug-level] [-G
   article-limit] [-f newsrc-file] [-I index-dir]]

DESCRIPTION
tin is a full-screen easy to use Usenet newsreader. It can
read news locally (i.e., /var/spool/news) or remotely
(rtin or tin -r option) via a NNTP (Network News Transport
Protocol) server. It will automatically utilize NOV (News
OVerview) style index files if available locally or via
   the NNTP XOVER command.

tin has four separate levels of operation: Group selection
level, Group level, Thread level and Article level. Use
the `h' (help) command to view a list of the commands
   available at a particular level.

On startup tin will show a list of the newsgroups found in
$HOME/.newsrc. An arrow '->' or highlighted bar will point
to the first newsgroup. Move to a group by using the ter
minal arrow keys (terminal dependent) or `j' and `k'. Use
PgUp/PgDn (terminal dependent) or Ctrl-U and Ctrl-D to
page up/down. Enter a newsgroup by pressing .

The key enters the next newsgroup with unread arti
   cles.

Thanks for all the answers. I guess there is no way to change how
the date displays at this point.

I'll try out the newsreaders mentioned and see which one I like.

How about rearranging the buttons on the toolbar? Is that
possible?

And is there a way to make the text wrap so it shows up in an
easily readable way in the preview window (I have it set to see
the full height account tree and the text shows up with one or
two words in a short line between longer ones). I hope people
understand what I'm trying to say here. I'm german and some-

No, unfortunately, it's hard-coded. I asked the same question when I
started trying out TB. My Windows was (and is) set to use American
style date display, but TB has insisted on using the same format all
along. The only thing that may change when you change the Windows'
regional (national) settings is the languages used to display the
"month" part--like, 18 ¤E¤ë 2000 (where ¤E¤ë is Sep. in Chinese
big-5).

Options|View threads by|Subject (or references - I prefer the latter).
This will arrange messages in threads. Then you have to select only
one sorting you need (in your message you stated you need both - by
subject and by time - this is impossible in the current version, but
such a wish was suggested a long time ago). I use Sorting by Creation
Time, Descending. BTW, descending _is_ sticky here. Try changing the
order by clicking on the column header. One click - you get ascending
order, another click - you get descending order.

I've suggested this to RITs way ago, and even suggested to make the quality
PDF myself if they provide the materials (you see, i from time to time typeset
books for some publishing companies here;-)), but seems that they didn't like
this idea.

Have you tried the "View threads by" options available through the
"View" menu? By selecting "Subject" you get them collapsed.

As for the manual you asked for: Its name is TBUDL, and it talks back
to you.

Best regards,
 Douglas

New User Questions

2000-01-10 Thread Lone-Wolf

Hello [EMAIL PROTECTED],

As a new user of Bat, I have already posted a stupid question
(although I suppose the only truly stupid question is the one not
asked) re putting a default To: address in a folder.

Thank you everybody for your replies.

My question now is - is there a publication we can buy / obtain /
download (similar to the "Agent" manual, for example), which is well
written, and which will explain things in a clear way for computer
  challenged people such as myself?

I am sure that this would be of assistance to a great many people,
as the Bat is chock full of features.

One final question - again the answer is quite simple (I hope). I
need to see my messages collapsed, in subject order, and within the
subject all the replies in the time which they were sent in
  chronological order.

At present the first two criteria are met, but the messages are not
sorted in the required order, although I believe I have selected the
correct options (Sort by Subject / descending order, also view threads
by subject). By the way, anybody else notice that the selection
"Descending Order" needs selecting every time, and does not remain
"sticky"?
