Hello, TBUDL Hello Bat People I have been foolin with filters and folders and such. A big project since I get over 700 emails a day. I have one mailing group that I belong to that is not affected by any sort of filter.. First I divide everything into 2 folders. One for mail with my email address on it and another for mail without my address. And then I filter them into separate folders from there. Everything works great except for this one reply to: "VS Big List" [EMAIL PROTECTED] TO: "VS Big List" [EMAIL PROTECTED] These 2 fields are the only ones that are always the same so the filter obviously has to be based on one of these. You would think it would work but it does not. I have set up 20 filters and they all work perfectly. not this one. I have deleted it and redone it a dozen times... nothing. Well, this is rare conditions, IMHO Actually it's quite usual among my email correspondents. Most Taiwanese people have a quite unique first name. OTOH, you can literally find more than a million out of 21 m. people in Taiwan that share the same last name as mine. :) Since most people use their first name or full name in the From field, filtering private mail by name instead of email address is usually more efficient. Many people alternate the email addresses they have, and people do change jobs or ISPs from time to time. And if happent, as expert user you can customize through shift-ctrl-S, right. Yes, but then I have to copy paste the name myself. With TB's currently implementation, I just press shift-ctrl-f, and strip out the email address part (and the quotation marks). -- Best regards, Ming-Li The Bat! 1.49 | Win2k SP1 -- -- View the TBUDL archive at http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com To send a message to the list moderation team double click here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe from TBUDL, double click here and send the message: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You are subscribed as : archive@jab.org

On Friday, January 05, 2001, 6:04:12 PM, Januk wrote: How about separating them into 4 fields with Tick Boxes. The conditions can then be added using a single set instead of just a single string. So the add filter confirmation would look something like: Select filter criteria: _ First Name _ Last Name _ Full Name _ E-mail Address After reading Allie's suggestion and yours, here's my idea that probably requires minimum interface changes: add a "drop down arrow" (like the ones next to the header fields in a message editor, how should I call them?) to the signal string boxes in the "Detect by ..." area. When a user click on it, all possible selections are listed there. The default (without having to dig into the drop-down list) would be email address only, for that seems to be the most preferred. For the one with both name and address, it would be properly formatted with special characters taken cared of. E.g., if the From field of the email is: "John Doe" [EMAIL PROTECTED] TB should format it as '"John Doe" [EMAIL PROTECTED]' (according to the help file, the single quotes would disable the special meaning of the special characters.) Still, inexperienced users might be confused by the single quotes and take them out manually, so I concur Thomas's idea that TB should use another symbol for case-sensitive search. We can take the method a step further: not just the name and address from the "From" field can be shown in the drop-down list, other fields (Reply-To, e.g.) can be there, too. I vaguely remember some other emailer does this.

Let's assume his name is John Doe and the address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have a folder for him, named JD. The filtering rule is as follows: Name: JD Source folder: Inbox Move messages to folder JD Strings: "John Doe"[EMAIL PROTECTED] Location: Sender Presence: Yes Rule is Active The other one is a filter for a mailing list, similar to the one above except that the Location is "Recipient". And obviously there's the name of the mailing list in the string! No typos, I've checked and double-checked. Both filters are created with the simplest way - rightclicking in the messagelist and then Specials / Create filter. Any ideas, anyone? Im a bit confused. I haven't changed my routines in creating filters in any way. -- Pete _ Do You Yahoo!? Re[3]: New filters don't work? Yes they do!
Here we go again... I have found that you have to manually edit the "strings" to be [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of "John Doe"[EMAIL PROTECTED] . It is odd that TB creates a filter string that it cannot later use to filter mail, don't you think? Yes! Which of course makes me wonder why the old strings were created differently... or am I just getting demented?! I seem to recall that in my earlier filters the string was in the style of John Doe[EMAIL PROTECTED], NOT "John Doe"etc. Oh well. Little tidying up and they work just fine. Read Filters
Hello TBUDL, I haven't been using Read Filters, so I know little regarding the way they work. I intend to delete the messages sent by those who insist on using html on other lists, doing so by filtering on their email address as sender. The problem is that all messages for lists go into their own folder, and incoming filters apparently work ONLY on the inbox, not on subdirectories. I could use a read filter there, but that would work only if the message were marked read - or would it? I made a read filter that has as actions, both mark as read and delete message. It caught some but not others. The problem isn't with the incoming mail, it's with cleaning up the mail that's already filtered to their own directory, I could do this manually, but want to know more about how TB! implements read filters. The kill filters don't seem to work for me, either. Any suggestions or pointers? Re: Read Filters
Hello Thomas others on TBUDL following this thread, Wednesday, January 03, 2001, you stated regarding Read Filters: TF I would use an incoming filter and delete the message (and mark it as TF read, otherwise you have a "new" message in the Trash folder). This TF filter should be executed before the list filter. DH The problem is that all messages for lists go into their own folder, DH and incoming filters apparently work ONLY on the inbox, not on DH subdirectories. TF They work manually on other folders than the inbox, if you focus on TF that folder and execute the filter. That's what I did, in the sense that I activated it by typing alt+f+f. But I did NOT check manual only, since the filer itself isn't checked manual only, just active. I I set the filter to manual only, I would HAVE to activate it via a command check manual only - or am I mistaken? (I've forgotten, as this has been covered). DH I could use a read filter there, but that would work only if the DH message were marked read - or would it? TF Some people don't use Incoming filters, so that all new messages TF arrive in the Inbox. When they read them, the message will be sorted TF into the appropriate folders. That's the idea. I used to like that, before the email volume increased to the point that much of it is never read. So the ticker doesn't help much either. I just check the new line on the inboxes and filter most things to their folders. DH I could do this manually, but want to know more about how TB! DH implements read filters. The kill filters don't seem to work for me, DH either. TF If the FROM address is the poster's email address, not the list TF address, kill filters should work. It didn't. TF However, since you're on dial-up, I TF would suggest incoming filters anyway. I may have to begin by deleting manually what has already been filtered previously. Hello TBUDL, I'm getting to grip with filters, but can someone please tell me how I make a filter for TBUDL? The usual Subject, To, etc. fields don't work (can we have Reply-To: please?) and I know there's another way, but what is it? A copy of a working filter would probably help me build new ones. Thanks. External access to filters?
Just thought I'd ask this again before I start diving into some perl code. Has anyone figured out how to get access to the filters from outside the TB interface? It's extremely cumbersome to make bulk changes (to accommodate folder restructuring, etc.) I don't expect there's a clean way, but thought I'd check before I start working on some perl scripts. I JR already use the blank recipient filter but would like to JR add to it. However, the above does not appear to be a JR link. Could you 2x check the address re-publish it or JR send it to me privately. The URL is correct, but Bat! assumes it is an email link since there is a "@" in it. Re: Another question on filters and templates
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi! First of all let me comment one thing. When you sent the pgp key request, it triggered the filter fine, however, when Dierk did, and when another user on another list did the same thing, it didn't trigger. Wonder if it has to do with the fact that there was text in the replies that didn't trigger the filter... Nah, i dunno and now to your other questions. on Thursday, October 12, 2000 15:10:01, our bat friend A . Curtis Martin typed: KE %SUBJECT="" ACM ^^^ ACM You don't need this line to completely change the ACM subject. Ok, just an extra precaution. ACM Did you change the position of the key request filter in the filter rule ACM listing either manually or indirectly by adding other filters? Hmm, so i did. I added an antispam filter which became the last one in the list. That's the place for an antispam filter to be, right? ACM Also check if you inadvertently changed other settings. Is the 'manual ACM only' switch enabled? Is the 'active' switch disabled? No to both questions. - -- /Krister email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Icq: 902032 Obtain my pgp keys by sending a mail to this address: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=Send_pgp_keys Using The Bat 1.46c under Windows 98, V4 10, build A -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: PGP 6.5i iQA/AwUBOebvhDg5SXqDEzkLEQJ6JQCg202L+VMnXxBAdr28q2ASJkAGD5kAoLxg QBsFvloT3AXqStZVwq+A8Ib1 =2tnk -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- -- View the TBUDL archive at http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com To send a message to the list moderation team double click here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe from TBUDL, double click here and send the message: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You are subscribed as : archive@jab.org
