This is the mistake you are making. Another word for "or" is
"alternative". There isn't an "or" switch. There's a whole *tab* for
alternatives. By putting multiples in a single place like you have,
they are all ANDed. A message has to fulfil *all* criteria to be
filtered by that rule.

You wish to create a filter for TBUDL messages. You need only define a
single search string in a single filter rule to achieve this.

How do you therefore have things set up as you say below?

PJFS I checked the filter and I have it set for: sender yes,
PJFS recipient yes, kludges yes, and any where yes,

It should simply be:

Location: Sender Presence: Yes

String: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A more precise filter rule is:

Location: Kludges Presence: Yes

String: Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello, TBUDL
Hello Bat People
I have been foolin with filters and folders and
such. A big project since I get over 700 emails a
day. I have one mailing group that I
belong to that is not affected by any sort of
filter..
First I divide everything into 2 folders. One for
mail with my email address on it and another for
mail without my address. And then I filter
them into separate folders from there. Everything
works great except for this one

reply to: "VS Big List" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
TO: "VS Big List" [EMAIL PROTECTED]

These 2 fields are the only ones that are always
the same so the filter obviously has to be based
on one of these.
You would think it would work but it does not.
I have set up 20 filters and they all work
perfectly. not this one. I have deleted it and
redone it a dozen times... nothing.
Has anyone ever ran across anything like this..??

Agreed, though it seems a pretty common practice to me. (E.g., IIRC,
deja.com's power search also use quotation marks for case-sensitive
match.)

Making such change would also require converting old filter file
(the .srx files) format automatically, and possibly a new file
format. At least a version info has to be included so newer versions
of TB would know whether to convert the filter file or not.

Actually it's quite usual among my email correspondents. Most
Taiwanese people have a quite unique first name. OTOH, you can
literally find more than a million out of 21 m. people in Taiwan
that share the same last name as mine. :) Since most people use
their first name or full name in the From field, filtering private
mail by name instead of email address is usually more efficient.
Many people alternate the email addresses they have, and people do
change jobs or ISPs from time to time.

And if happent, as expert user you can customize through
 shift-ctrl-S, right.

Yes, but then I have to copy paste the name myself. With TB's
currently implementation, I just press shift-ctrl-f, and strip out
the email address part (and the quotation marks).

After reading Allie's suggestion and yours, here's my idea that
probably requires minimum interface changes:

add a "drop down arrow" (like the ones next to the header fields in
a message editor, how should I call them?) to the signal string
boxes in the "Detect by ..." area. When a user click on it, all
possible selections are listed there.

The default (without having to dig into the drop-down list) would be
email address only, for that seems to be the most preferred. For the
one with both name and address, it would be properly formatted with
special characters taken cared of. E.g., if the From field of the
email is:

"John Doe" [EMAIL PROTECTED]

TB should format it as

'"John Doe" [EMAIL PROTECTED]'

(according to the help file, the single quotes would disable the
special meaning of the special characters.)

Still, inexperienced users might be confused by the single quotes
and take them out manually, so I concur Thomas's idea that TB should
use another symbol for case-sensitive search.

We can take the method a step further: not just the name and address
from the "From" field can be shown in the drop-down list, other
fields (Reply-To, e.g.) can be there, too. I vaguely remember some
other emailer does this.

Re[2]: New filters don't work?

2001-01-05 Thread Pete P

Hello again!

PP Anybody else have new filters - after upgrading to 1.48f... do they
PP work?

AGSAA Yes, I have created at least 3 filters after the 1.48f installation. Why
AGSAA don't you describe these two faulty filters?

Okay... the first one is set to filter mails from a single person.
Let's assume his name is John Doe and the address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a folder for him, named JD. The filtering rule is as follows:

Name: JD
Source folder: Inbox
Move messages to folder JD
Strings: "John Doe"[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Location: Sender
Presence: Yes
Rule is Active

The other one is a filter for a mailing list, similar to the one above
except that the Location is "Recipient". And obviously there's the
name of the mailing list in the string!

No typos, I've checked and double-checked. Both filters are created
with the simplest way - rightclicking in the messagelist and then
Specials / Create filter.

Any ideas, anyone? Im a bit confused. I haven't changed my routines in
creating filters in any way.

Re[3]: New filters don't work? Yes they do!

2001-01-05 Thread Pete P

Here we go again...

I have found that you have to manually edit the "strings" to be
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of "John Doe"[EMAIL PROTECTED] .

It is odd that TB creates a filter string that it cannot later use to
 filter mail, don't you think?

Yes!

Which of course makes me wonder why the old strings were created
differently... or am I just getting demented?! I seem to recall that
in my earlier filters the string was in the style of John
Doe[EMAIL PROTECTED], NOT "John Doe"etc.

Oh well. Little tidying up and they work just fine.

Thanks Kevin and Randy for helping me out!

The reason is quotation marks in TB's filer strings have special
meaning. It calls for case-sensitive search. So when you put

"John Doe"[EMAIL PROTECTED]

in the search string, TB would in fact look for

John Doe[EMAIL PROTECTED]

where the _John Doe_ part is case-sensitive. As you can see, it
won't match.

Please see the help file for more details (including other special
characters). The help file isn't very good, but it does cover this.

Yes: quotation marks shouldn't be treated as special characters,
because the real name of an email address is often surrounded by them.

For example, it might be unusual that % is the first character of a
real name or an email address (maybe even forbidden?). So, enclosing

Read Filters

2001-01-02 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello TBUDL,

I haven't been using Read Filters, so I know little regarding the
way they work. I intend to delete the messages sent by those who
insist on using html on other lists, doing so by filtering on their
email address as sender.

The problem is that all messages for lists go into their own folder,
and incoming filters apparently work ONLY on the inbox, not on
subdirectories. I could use a read filter there, but that would work
only if the message were marked read - or would it?

I made a read filter that has as actions, both mark as read and
delete message. It caught some but not others. The problem isn't
with the incoming mail, it's with cleaning up the mail that's
already filtered to their own directory,

I could do this manually, but want to know more about how TB!
implements read filters. The kill filters don't seem to work for me,
either.

Any suggestions or pointers?

Douglas

only, I would HAVE to activate it via a command check manual only
- or am I mistaken? (I've forgotten, as this has been covered).

DH I could use a read filter there, but that would work only if the
DH message were marked read - or would it?

TF Some people don't use Incoming filters, so that all new messages
TF arrive in the Inbox. When they read them, the message will be sorted
TF into the appropriate folders. That's the idea.

I used to like that, before the email volume increased to the point
that much of it is never read. So the ticker doesn't help much
either. I just check the new line on the inboxes and filter most
things to their folders.

DH I could do this manually, but want to know more about how TB!
DH implements read filters. The kill filters don't seem to work for me,
DH either.

TF If the FROM address is the poster's email address, not the list
TF address, kill filters should work.

It didn't.

TF However, since you're on dial-up, I
TF would suggest incoming filters anyway.

I may have to begin by deleting manually what has already been
filtered previously.

Thanks, Tom

DH

I am reading a book on RegExp with little luck as I'm afraid its a
little above my head but I'm trying with a very simple filter that is
not working. Perhaps you or someone else can tell me what's wrong.

I created a "test" filter a "test" folder
The "test"filter was to send filtered files to the "test" folder under
filtered circumstances

The filter is for Incoming Mail (at the bottom of the list)
Under options tab, regular expressions was selected
Action = move to "test" folder

The test filter rule I constructed is:
string = ^[^JjAaNn]   location = kludges   present = no

The regexp was meant to express:
At the beginning of the string
If not J (or) j followed by A (or) a followed by N (or) n
is found in the kludges
then send to "test" folder

What's the matter with this simple regexp? TIA

Well, you've only denoted a character class and the initial '^'
restricts the regex to matching only strings that start a new line in
the Kludges.

From what you said above, it would seem that you want all messages that
do not have 'Jan' (case insensitive) in the Kludges moved to the test
folder. I assume you wouldn't want the expression to cover string
matches like:

Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
^^^
Januk Aggarwal
^^^

"Michael S. Greenbaum" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 ^^^
Organization: Janus Books, Ltd.
  ^^^

By default filter associated regex's are case insensitive but an
expression that should work is (?i)\bjan\b|jan@\S*

It will however catch messages with a January date:

25 Jan 2000
   ^^^
To prevent this one could add:

(?!)(?!\d\d\s)jan(?!\s\d{4})|jan@\S*

Not only that. The second part of the expression "[^JjAaNn]" is just a

how many characters to match from the class defined.

As filter string use "tbudl" , condition "active"
move to folder "tbudl"

And locate the filter at the top of your filters.

You can also see your "Welcome to TBUDL" message for this filter.

I use "Reply-To: TBUDL" in Kludges. This will distinguish between

message is posted to TBUDL, TBBETA and TBOT and you have a separate

Look in the headers of every message sent to the address

Take this message from you to which I'm replying. In the headers is:

Received: from dutaint.com (unverified [203.130.233.8]) by
mail.kasnet.com (Vircom SMTPRS 4.4.184) with ESMTP id
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] for [EMAIL PROTECTED];

Go into your network administration settings and enable "allow local
delivery". This makes you able to test incoming filters without using
the mail server. You can easily resend any of your messages instead of
creating new ones to send, changing the To: address accordingly. It's
really no big deal. :=)

External access to filters?

2000-11-17 Thread Michael P. Wilson

Just thought I'd ask this again before I start diving into some perl
code.

Has anyone figured out how to get access to the filters from outside
the TB interface? It's extremely cumbersome to make bulk changes
(to accommodate folder restructuring, etc.)

I don't expect there's a clean way, but thought I'd check before I
start working on some perl scripts.

TIA,

would be nice to have the option to check which AB's the address is added

There's a work around. You can create a filter to add the selected
message/s address/es to your address book. If you look at the action
section in the filter rule configuration dialog, you'll see that you can
specify which address book group to add the address to. Assign a hot key
for the filter and disable "check the selected message against this
rule".

At present, if I wish to add an address to the TB List AB group, I just
hit my hot key CTRL-ALT-Z. I have another address book group set as the
default.

You can only designate one AB as the default destination for
add/delete operation. You may set up more groups in an AB, which
then can be specified as the destination in filters. Do you have
specific reason to set up one AB for each mailing list? Usually
grouping works just as well.

Copying filters to another account upgrading from v. 1.42

2000-11-01 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello fellow TB! users y gurus:

Copying filters to another account - Can it be done? (It would
simplify things - after having lost long term 3 email accounts w/ a
single provider who went under - or elsewhere, and trying a number
of new email account sources I wound up with 13 that are all
functioning just fine).

One more thing: Is there any real reason to upgrade from v. 1.42?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on what that means. :-) So

[ - Bug fixed (we hope) ]

[!] MAPI support

[+] It is possible to add S/MIME certificates from attached signatures using
"Message|Specials|Add sender to Address Book" (Ctrl+W)

[+] Dial-up Monitor has an ability to stay on-line (do not disconnect) after a mail
session. It also now has "Minimise Button" and keeps its window position between

[*] It is possible to move across same-level folders the Folder Tree of a main window
using Ctrl+Arrows. If there no folders remains in the same level within a branch, The

Filters are stored in ACCOUNT.SRX under each account's home
directory. Account templates are stored in ACCOUNT.CFG, folder
templates in ACCOUNT.FLX, quick templates in ACCOUNT.QTN, all in the
same directory. AB templates are, of course, in your AB files
(*.ABD).

The best way is to backup everything under your account's home
directory. Of course, it's advisable to backup your mail as well.

Hi!
First of all let me comment one thing. When you sent the pgp key
request, it triggered the filter fine, however, when Dierk did, and
when another user on another list did the same thing, it didn't
trigger. Wonder if it has to do with the fact that there was text in
the replies that didn't trigger the filter... Nah, i dunno and now to
your other questions.

on Thursday, October 12, 2000 15:10:01, our bat friend A . Curtis Martin typed:

ACM You don't need this line to completely change the
ACM subject.

Ok, just an extra precaution.

ACM Did you change the position of the key request filter in the filter rule
ACM listing either manually or indirectly by adding other filters?

Hmm, so i did. I added an antispam filter which became the last one in
the list. That's the place for an antispam filter to be, right?

ACM Also check if you inadvertently changed other settings. Is the 'manual
ACM only' switch enabled? Is the 'active' switch disabled?

No to both questions.

GE Sorry Krister, no help but a question. I have the same template-filter

GE Does this work ?? Everything works fine here, but I'm never asked to enter my
GE passphrase for signing although all checkboxes are ticked the way they should.

GE What do you do that I don't think of ?

Heck i don't know! I just figured that it worked. I don't get those
passphraze boxes either, now that you say it... I cache my decrypt and
signing passphrases for an hour but... No, i don't know what i do, and
now when you say it, i don't really know if it works... Have to check
this out...

KE Erm, stupid question of the week: Why the {0,4}?

It means that there should be a minumum of 0 but no more than 4 of the
characters immediately preceding the quantifier, in this case, '.' which
means any character except a new line.

Not really. If the antispam filter is placed there to delete spam as
they come in, then one of the earlier filters could match the spam
message and prevent its deletion. It could stay there provided that the
preceding filters are precise in what they're supposed to filter.

Spam filters are usually placed at the top.
