[Texascavers] TCR and NCKMS
Is anybody going to TCR that can haul the TSS/TSA trailer? It has the sales tents, lights, sound system, T-shirts, books, etc. Also, is anyone going to the National Cave and Karst Management Symposium in Arkansas the week after TCR that would want to carpool? [Texascavers] UT Grotto survey class
Tonight is the second (of six) workshop classes designed to empower a whole batch of new sketchers. Last week we covered the types and purposes of cave maps, the in-cave survey process, and types of instruments, survey books, and some survey project protocols. Tonight we revisit Project caving standards, setting up your sketchbook, data and metadata, and sketching to scale. If you have already signed up, we'll be meeting at the same time and place. Bring a flash drive for handouts. If you think this is a great idea and would like to get involved if we do another series, send me a message off list. [Texascavers] TCMA to sponsor NCRC weekend workshop
Mark your calendars! The South-Central Region of the National Cave Rescue Commission is partnering with the Texas Cave Management Association to put on an Orientation to Cave Rescue (OCR) workshop the weekend of 16-18 September 2016 at TCMA's Carta Valley fieldhouse at the Deep and Punkin Cave Nature Preserve. Spaces are limited and already filling fast. For more details, check out the attached flyer, or go to https://www.regonline.com/OCR2016SouthCentral to register. It's only $50, including meals. Even if you don't plan to be involved in cave rescue, this 2-day workshop will help you to be a safer caver and better prepared in case you are ever involved in an cave accident. A combination of classroom-style lectures and hands-on exercises culminates in a short mock rescue taking place in one of the two caves on the property. Re: [Texascavers] TSA Spring Convention news
Geary, Yes. Here are my instructions to all presenters: Keep it simple. Avoid technical terms and jargon. Avoid graphs and charts. Since we are likely to have a fair number of the general public there, don't assume they even know what "caves", "karst", and "aquifer" mean. Deine everything, but use short words. Aim for a 6th grade comprehension level. DO use LOTS of graphics, especially illustrations, photos, maps, and videos. Don't linger on any one slide too long. Keep it snappy. Our aim is to educate (both cavers and non-cavers), and instill a big feeling of "Oh wow!, I don't know that! That is SO cool!" through all of our presentations. Stories and anecdotes help relate the topic to the audience, as long as they are pertinent. Remember that you only have 20 minutes (or so), plus questions and answers afterwards. And I WILL keep everybody on schedule. Can you send me a title and a couple of lines of description for the Program? Re: [Texascavers] Best padlocks for cave gates
No gate is absolutely foolproof, and there are an awful lot of fools out there. I have even seen entrances encased in concrete, and I mean FEET of concrete, reopened by persistent vandals. What we try to do is to keep out 99% of the would- be trespassers while maintaining airflow, humidity, nutrient flow, and other key components of the cave ecosystem in as natural of a state as possible. For the other, more persistent types, we hope that frequent visitation and monitoring catches their efforts before completed. We make repairs, again and again if necessary, and hopefully they get bored and move on to some other nefarious endeavor. -- Jim On Mon, Apr 4, 2016 at 3:26 PM, Geary Schindel via Texascavers < texascavers@texascavers.com> wrote: > Jim, > > > > Considering the availability of high torque battery operated tools these > days, are you seeing cave gates breached more often or is this a mouse trap > issue of the available tools are better so the gates must get better also. > > > > Geary > ___ Texascavers mailing list | http://texascavers.com Texascavers@texascavers.com | Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/texascavers@texascavers.com/ http://lists.texascavers.com/listinfo/texascavers

[Texascavers] second call for presentations --- TSA Spring Convention
Cavers! This year's TSA Convention is going to be the biggest ever. We will be at the Edwards County Fairgrounds in Rocksprings on April 22-24. And this year we are also inviting the general public! So come prepared to interact with ranchers, hunters, landowners, and schoolchildren and help to teach them about the karst on which they live. Needless to say, we all need to be extremely professional and on our best behavior. Oh, and Edwards County has a no alcohol policy, so absolutely no bottles or cans should be anywhere in sight (and coozies are not adequate cover -- use another opaque container instead). This short reminder is also to solicit additional 20-30 minute talks. We still have some spaces available, so if you have something cool to share on exploration, mapping, geology, biology, archeology, or paleontology specific to Edwards Plateau caves and karst, then I want to hear about it! Yes, this year our talks all have a theme, becoming the Edwards Plateau Symposium. Contact me directly if you want to make a short presentation. Now for some other teasers: We have camping on site, but with limited trees, so come prepared. (Hey, it the Edwards Plateau, so that shouldn't be a big surprise.) We'll have a central campfire, but no other fires are allowed. We'll have the usual TCMA fundraising auction, but with a few new twists. Esteemed chef Stefan Creaser and his crew will be serving a delicious Tex-Mex buffet for the Saturday banquet. There will be doorprizes. And you can make your own arrangements on Friday to see the bat emergence at the Devils Sinkhole (Texas' deepest pit) or visit nearby Kickapoo Caverns or Caverns of Sonora (both sponsors of this Convention) before you head back home on Sunday. If you have more questions, or need maps and directions, check out the 2016 TSA Spring Convention Facebook site. All the latest news and details will be posted there. See you in Rocksprings in April! [Texascavers] trip report: Punkin Cave survey expedition #24
A couple of weeks ago Yaz decided to visit her family in San Luis Potosí. I was between projects and had some time on my hands. So I got the wild idea to head to Carta Valley for a week and survey as much of Punkin Cave as I could. I talked to Ben Hutchins, who said he and Carrie were interested, and he had some time available. At the UT Grotto meeting I got a few more hits, so the expedition was on! David Ochel said he could make it for the first part of the week. We both drove up Monday, got settled in to the cabin, worked on the outhouse for a bit, and planned our strategy for the next day. On Tuesday 4 August, David and I rigged the small entrance and were in the cave relatively early. We headed directly to some leads I had left from my survey with Tone and Chains in June. We quickly mopped up some leads, determined that a few more needed a little shaving, and moved some rocks so that I could retrieve the hammer I dropped in June. We found several more good leads that need additional work. We also mapped the Neglected Room that we (re-) found in June. It had been previously discovered by ZA survey team (G. Schindel, A. Schindel, and A. Croskrey) in March 2014, but not surveyed. We left a few hairy leads that were heading into blank spots on the map, since there were just two of us and we had no backup. All told, in 7 hours we made 19 shot for a total of 43.68m (or 2.30m per shot). We got out in time for an awesome dinner, movie, and gin tonics. The next day, Wednesday, David had to leave, so I had the place to myself until the next wave arrived that evening. I worked on the outhouse some more, repaired the two broken benches, and generally tidied up the cabin. I took a nice walk, had a nap, and just generally read and relaxed. After a while Ben, Carrie, and Hazel Hutchins arrived from San Marcos, bringing Ron Rutherford with them. Dinner and drinks again ensued, and some more incredible stargazing tool place, before everyone got settled into their respective rooms. Thursday morning, 6 August, dawned bright and early, as it is wont to do in August. Ben, Ron, and I headed back to the Neglected Room to mop up some more remaining leads, while Carrie stayed cool in the cabin and watched Hazel. We first went to a lead off QB2 that looked like it should connect to ZA8, which I enlarged on Tuesday. Sure enough, we found the awkward climb, shot three shots, and tied in to the 2014 station. We were on a roll. Next we mapped the obvious connection from ZA6 to our AF50 from Tuesday. 13 more meters in the bag. I talked Ben into climbing up into a small lead that David and I passed on, and we got another 5m. Meanwhile, Ron was working on some good breakdown leads at the edge of the known map, but couldn't quite make them go. Ben and I mapped another short connection, QB6 to ZA5. We then surveyed down into a big hall at the end of Matt and Saj's survey from June. This room (Refrigerator Room) was super cold, with a very strong breeze blowing out of a too-tight hole through which we could see big blackness. We'll have to come back with better tools, as this goes off the map in a very good direction. One short side passage off the Refrigerator Room was completed, then we packed up and headed down to Windy City. There, off of WM28, David and I found some unsurveyed leads that we tackled to finish out our day. Ron got excluded from part of the passage, but we eventually mapped 24m in this area before everything got too tight. When we got back and plotted out surveys, it was clear that we were heading south along the western flank of the cave, towards the Mortuary Room surveys. Could we possibly attack it from that side as well? We ended the 8-hour day after 36 shots, having put 79.43m in the survey book (2.21m per shot). On Friday 7 August our ranks were reinforced by the arrival of Tom Rogers and Amy Morton. Carrie once again baby-sat while the five remaining went back in the cave. This time we headed towards the Mortuary Room, but somehow got off the Z survey (which we wanted) and onto the original R survey by way of some unmapped connections. I guess we'll have to mop up those one day. We were looking for a lead marked on the survey notes at Z6. But instead, I found an obvious lead at R9. R9 was from a survey I did in March of 2005, and I marked the station with soot from my carbide lamp. Good thing, since it lasted all these years and we could relocate it. The lead trended north along the west wall, right towards where we left off the day before. The lower level eventually died, but we started working on an upper lead that needed some rock removal. Eventually Ben, Amy, and Tom slid through. I hurt a rib while hammering, and never was able to push through. I turned over the survey book to Ben. Meanwhile, Amy found a tube heading up, and could see daylight. I retreated back to the Entrance Room, and eventually found Amy's tube by calling back and forth. It was

With your help, we will set a World Record for Most Bat Houses Built in a Day—a fun way to get the community active in conservation and to give bats healthy, safe homes. We invite you to host a Bat House Building event at your location on October 31, 2015. Our goal is to have multiple sites across the U.S. and Canada host events in order to reach a record of 5,000 bat houses built in a day. Bat houses are easy and fun to build for both kids and adults. Kits will be available with all the necessary components and pre-drilled holes or you can download free designs to build your own from scratch. This World Record Day will fall on the last day of Bat Week, an annual, international weeklong block of programs and media appearances designed to draw attention to bats. Now in its second year, Bat Week focuses on activating the public to become involved in conservation. Bat Week is organized by a volunteer Steering Committee comprised of representatives from the Organization for Bat Conservation, Bat Conservation International, US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Wildlife Acoustics, Lubee Bat Conservancy and the Save Lucy Campaign. What You Can Expect From Us The Bat Week Steering Committee will provide you with informational tools to promote, host and document your participation in the World Record Bat House Building Day. We will also give you contact information to order bat house kits and free design plans to build your own. In the week leading up to the World Record day, we will be working with the media, celebrities and corporations to maximize promotion of the activity. Promotion will direct the public to our website, www.batweek.org, which will list all host sites for bat house building, allowing people to find a location nearest to them. What We Ask From You If you will be using bat house kits for your event, we would need your commitment to purchase bat house kits by September 18 in order to prepare the materials. Kits will be sold directly from the manufacturer at wholesale prices, which are roughly $30 each. The manufacturer will drop ship the kits directly to you in time for the event. (These bat houses are single-chamber, cedar bat houses designed to maximize the likelihood of use by bats). Once you decide to become a host site, we will list your location on our website and send you the tools you will need to promote and host your event. You may decide how to distribute the completed bat houses following the event. Participants can take the bat house home, you can keep the bat houses for your facility or you can donate the bat houses to another group. What’s Next? This will be an amazing day and we hope you will join us! Please reply to this email if you are interested in becoming a host site or if you have further questions. [Texascavers] National Cave and Karst Management Symposium
Friends, The premier cave conservation and management meeting in the world, the NCKMS, happens every other year. 2015 happens to be one of those years. There is a full week of workshops, talks, and field trips (and parties!), and an opportunity to interact with the movers and shakers of the cave management and conservation community, including representatives from the NSS, the NPS, USFS, BLM, USFWS, ACCA, TNC, many state agencies from all over the country, show cave operators, cave conservancies, and even foreign cavers. Details about this year's event can be found at http://www.cave-research.org/NCKMS2015/index.html. This year's conference is the week immediately after TCR, in Cave City, Kentucky. I plan to start my drive after getting home from TCR and repacking on that Sunday, and arrive in KY that Monday, hopefully in the early afternoon. I am wondering if anybody, particularly from the Austin/San Antonio area, would like to carpool with me. If I take the Tahoe, I can easily fit four other people and their luggage. This keeps everyone's costs down, keep us awake while driving, and maybe even puts us in earlier if we swap out drivers. It's about a 13 hour drive from Austin to MACA. Let me know off list if you are interested, even if you aren't yet totally committed to going, and we'll work out the details. Early registration ends 6 September, so I'll be registering soon to save even more money. Catch me at a grotto meeting or just give me a yell if you want to find out more about the NCKMS and what it can do for you. [Texascavers] cleanup scheduled at TCMA's Lost Oasis Cave Preserve
The Lost Oasis Cave Preserve in South Austin is having a cleanup day Saturday, April 4th from 9 am until about 2 pm, or until everyone gets tired. All in all, we could probably use 20-30 people, considering the multiple chores we're hoping to take care of. There are three or four dead trees that need to be cut, and a lot of new-growth juniper that should be thinned. We would like to have at least two people bring and operate chainsaws. We need another 6-8 people to be saw attendants and draggers. Gill Ediger is bringing the big chipper so that we can feed these and several piles of old cut brush into it and make mulch. Feel free to bring bags, buckets, or tubs to take some mulch home for your yards. We'll have plenty. We also need to start doing more active need to do fire ant control, so we would like several people to bring big pots and boilers (and 3-4 five-gallon jugs of water each) so we can pour boiling water on the mounds. There is a lot of this to do -- probably 50-100 mounds, so we'd like four or more boilers and people unafraid to haul pots. Once we know how many boilers we can have on site, we will coordinate picking up propane tanks for same. And if you don't want to drag brush or carry buckets of boiling water, we have another chore for you. We will start thinning the profusion of prickly pear around the cave, so bring bow rakes (garden rakes), pitchforks, clam rakes, and other similar tools to help with that project. Everyone should bring gloves and dress appropriately. TCMA will provide coolers with beverages. After the work is finished, Preserve Manager Chris Vreeland will be happy to open the cave for anyone who wants to see it. A helmet and headlamp are required, but you don't need much else. Contact Chris offlist at cvreel...@austin.rr.com to sign up, volunteer for a particular task, or to get directions. ___ Texascavers mailing list | http://texascavers.com Texascavers@texascavers.com | Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/texascavers@texascavers.com/ http://lists.texascavers.com/listinfo/texascavers

If you are planning to come and haven't told me yet, please send me a text or email or call to let me know. We are buying drinks and snacks, and ordering lunch for the volunteers, so we need a headcount. Also, it's supposed to rain a bit on Sunday, so dress appropriately. [Texascavers] upcoming TCMA events
The Texas Cave Management Association (TCMA) has scheduled four fun events this spring that need volunteers, and we hope you join us. We will be building a new, bat-friendly gate at our *Ezells Cave Preserve* in San Marcos on *Sunday 8 March*. Please contact Preserve Manager Ron Ralph at ronra...@austin.rr.com or 512-797-3817 to sign up. We have some paid professionals with lots of bat gate building experience to do the main engineering and welding, but we need volunteers to help move, lift, cut, and place the steel bars, stage equipment, and help clean up afterwards. Lunch will be provided. Wear boots and gloves. Helmets, hearing protection, and eye protection are also recommended, especially around the gating site. We plan to start around 8 am and end when the gate is finished and the gear is packed up. This is a long-overdue project, and we are happy to see it finally come to fruition. Major funding has been provided by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, with lesser funding from the Edwards Aquifer Authority and an anonymous donor. Ron is looking for other donations, and has already received a few from various cavers who will have their names welded on a the gate for all to see. If you are interested in helping support this effort, please contact Ron. On *Saturday 21 **March* Preserve Manager Ellie Falgout is hosting a volunteer work day at our *Rolling Oaks Cave Preserve *in Bexar County (northwest San Antonio). The main purposes are to clean up the grounds (trash and branches) and to continue the dig at Niche Cave, which is full of old farm trash and sediment that is washing in. We need people, buckets, shovels. Bring your own drinks and snacks for the work. TCMA will provide bottled water and light lunch. The cave preserve is located at 224 Laurel Ridge Lane, San Antonio, TX 78253. All visitors to the Preserve will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Look for signs and park along the street. Meet at 10:00 am. We should be finished with the work by 2pm. Bring your own cave gear if you wish to enter any of the four Preserve caves after the dig. Ellie can be reached at 509-899-0007 512-797-3817 or ellie.tho...@gmail.com in case any one gets lost, or if you would like coordinate more details with her. No need to RSVP if you are attending. Just show up! The very next day,* Sunday 22 March*, the TCMA is having a board meeting in south Austin, and all interested parties, members and non-members alike, are invited to attend. Details of the meeting place are yet to be announced, so stay tuned or contact any of the TCMA Directors for more details as things firm up. Immediately after the meeting, we will reconvene at our *Whirlpool Cave Preserve* for another volunteer work session, coordinated by Preserve Manager Matt Turner. The focus is cleaning up trash and flood debris, so bring gloves, rakes, loppers, etc. TCMA will provide trash bags, and we'll try to haul all the garbage off the property that day if there isn't too much. There may also be an opportunity for volunteers to visit the cave afterwards, so bring basic cave gear. Water and snacks will be provided. Contact Matt at 512-963-4682 or kat...@yahoo.com for directions and details, or just show up. The following weekend,* 27-29 March*, is a volunteer work weekend at our *Deep and Punkin Cave Preserve* in Carta Valley. Preserve Manager Don Arburn is planning to begin site work on the new location for the Loo and future shower house. There is a maximum limit of 25 at the property, so definitely call or email Don in advance to get your name on the list. Plan to cut trees, dig rock, and move heavy materials. Don can be reached at d...@oztotl.com or 361-362-3677. Limited bunk space is available in the cabin, or bring a tent. Meals will be provided, and there is a $10 property use fee on top of the meal expenses. Look for more exciting volunteer opportunities coming up at our other preserves later this year. David, If you are paying even $100 a month for your storage unit (which is a really good price), then you are paying $1200 a year. So the cost of the unit is more than what you say the contents are worth. In 50 years you will have paid over $60,000. That is just poor economics.
