[Therion] Subtypes can't have numbers?

2024-01-14 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

Just trying to set a "line u:s41p" symbol on latest Therion and getting strange
metapost errors:

! Missing `=' has been inserted.

51
l.6846 let l_u_s51
p = l_u;
You should have said `let symbol = something'.
But don't worry; I'll pretend that an equals sign
was present. The next token I read will be `something'.

! Missing symbolic token inserted.

INACCESSIBLE
l.6846 let l_u_s51
p = l_u;
Sorry: You can't redefine a number, string, or expr.
I've inserted an inaccessible symbol so that your
definition will be completed without mixing me up too badly.

! Extra tokens will be flushed.

p
l.6846 let l_u_s51p
= l_u;
I've just read as much of that statement as I could fathom,
so a semicolon should have been next. It's very puzzling...
but I'll try to get myself back together, by ignoring
everything up to the next `;'. Please insert a semicolon
now in front of anything that you don't want me to delete.
(See Chapter 27 of The METAFONTbook for an example.)

! Missing `=' has been inserted.

51
l.6847 def l_u_s51
p_legend = l_u_s51p(((-.3,0.5) .. (.3,.3) .. (.7,.7) .. (1...
The next thing in this `def' should have been `=',
because I've already looked at the definition heading.
But don't worry; I'll pretend that an equals sign
was present. Everything from here to `enddef'
will be the replacement text of this macro.

I believe that subtypes aren´t supporting all chars allowed by as
defined in THBook page 13 (Data types).

Is it a bug or am I misreading something?

Any suggestions on how to make them really opaque (on all PDF viewers)?

I wonder if Survex 3d files shouldn't be treated in Therion as the "data" part
of a "centreline". This way, we would be able to set all centreline properties
for 3d files.

How can I set, for example, the team responsable for the centerline if I am

Interesting. Unexpected but interesting. Thanks.

I just found out that there is a label line type. I only knew the point one.

For label lines, the scale option affects the text size.

# end of pdftex log file #
therion: error -- filesystem error: cannot copy: File exists
[/tmp/th844522/data.pdf] [sdlm-projetado.pdf]writing xtherion file ... done

If I delete the previous created PDF file the new one is created without

[Therion] Presenting Mapiah, a multi-platform, more friendly, modern and performant graphical interface for Therion

2021-11-14 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Presenting Mapiah.

Mapiah is my take on a multi-platform, more friendly, modern and performant
graphical interface for Therion. It's written in C++/Qt. It aims to be as
compatible as practical and possible with XTherion.

This is the "proof-of-concept" release.

It's source code and it's releases files can be found at the projects home at
SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mapiah/

Please let me know what you think about it, if it has any future, if you want
to help.

*The name*

Mapiah is a international friendly version of the portuguese word "mapear" on
the sentence "vamos mapear?" - "let's go surveying?" or "let's go mapping?" -
which is usually pronounced [vʌmu mapi'a].

*Multi-platform*

Right now we have both Linux and Windows releases as these are the OSs I have
access and minimal experience with. Until some Mac user steps up, that's the
way it's gonna be.

Having said that, the idea is to follow best practices during Mapiah's
development to ease the release process on all target platforms: Linux, Windows
and Mac.

*The C++/Qt choices*

Going backwards, the Qt framework was chosen as it has an open source
compatible version. It's mature, powerful and seems to take multi-platform
support seriously.

The first idea was to use Qt Python as the "friendly" requirement could also be
applied to the language chosen but in the end I decided to go with C++ because
I believe that a C++ application might be more easily distributable across all
platforms.

*The "proof-of-concept" release*

The basic reading and writing functionality supposely is th concept being
proved in this release. Supposely because the actual concept I am trying to
prove myself with this release is that I can write functional and decent C++/Qt
code which, for the time being, is kinda proved.

*Functionality*

This 0.0.1 release can read a TH2 file, present it on the screen and save it.

With an open file you can change the zoom level and write the file again.

You should be able to see your TH2 file on screen correctly and the saved file
should be functionally identical to the original one.

All point, line, area, scrap and XTHERION options should be properly read and
saved even if most aren't actually understood/acted upon.

*License*

This software is licensed under GPL 3 or later.

*WARNINGS*

PLEASE TEST!

DON'T OVERRIDE YOUR ORIGINAL FILE WITH THE ONE WRITTEN BY MAPIAH!!

THIS IS A PRE-ALPHA VERSION!!!

Sorry for the slightly off topic reply but AFAIU your dataset having station
unique names allows you to set -namespace off which could save some work but
you don't have to and as you already know that some other parts of your dataset
needs -namespace on, why bother with -namespace off?

[Therion] Survex splays flag in Therion

2021-09-21 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

I've been experimenting a new workflow, new for me at least, where I prepare
the survey data at Survex and import the resulting Survex 3d files in Therion.

I'm facing a issue with splay shots.

Survex correctly identifies splay shots flagged with "*flags splay": it draws
them differently and won't add them at survey statistics.

The problem is that Therion seems to ignore the "*flags splay" setting and both:

* draws the splay shots as if they were real shots and

* add their length to the total cave length.

Attached is a simple example where this issue can be observed.

If you open "splay_test.svx" in Aven, you will get a total length of 20 m as
expected.

If you open "splay_test.pdf", produced by Therion, you will see that at this
file the cave length is reported as 26 m (these extra 6 m are the 2 splays in
the original svx file).

Is there a way to make Therion recognize the splay shots flags defined in the
Survex file so I can control their appearance separately from the main shots
and their length not be included on the total cave length?

I'm using Aven 1.2.44 and Therion 6.0.2+0abb46d.

I have a MNemo and have been using for some time know.

Recently I wrote 2 small pieces of software in PHP: one to convert TML files to
Survex (TML is the file format produced by Ariane, the caving software
developed by Sebastien, the same guy that made the MNemo) and another to
convert MNemoBridge's Excel files to Survex (a simplier data extraction tool
also for the MNemo).

I have already sent a copy of both to Sebastien so he can use them as base for
native export support in Ariane and/or MNemoBridge.

I decided to produce Survex files as this format is almost a native one for
Therion.

The most current versions of both are attached together with a small support
file necessary for both.

For the MNemoBridge/Excel to Survex conversion software to work, you also need
to install PhpSpreadSheel (https://github.com/PHPOffice/PhpSpreadsheet) so PHP
can read Excel files.

[Therion] Trouble compiling latest therion code in Linux (Ubuntu 20.04)

2020-12-15 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

I'm having trouble compiling the latest therion code in Linux (Ubuntu 20.04).

First I had to manually create the following symlinks inside
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu so ld would stop complaining about missing libraries
during the linking process:

libvtkIOLegacy.so -> libvtkIOLegacy-7.1.so
libvtkFiltersHybrid.so -> libvtkFiltersHybrid-7.1.so
libvtkFiltersCore.so -> libvtkFiltersCore-7.1.so
libvtkCommonCore.so -> libvtkCommonCore-7.1.so
libvtkCommonDataModel.so -> libvtkCommonDataModel-7.1.so
libvtkCommonExecutionModel.so -> libvtkCommonExecutionModel-7.1.so

Now, after an apparently clean compile, I'm getting the following errors at the
end of "sudo make install":

installation error: could not write /usr/local/bin/therion
installation error: could not write /usr/local/bin/xtherion
installation error: could not write /usr/local/bin/loch

There are no therion, xtherion and loch executables on the build directory to
be copied.

Any ideias what could be wrong?

Regards,

Rodrigo Severo

Do you have an ETA for the inclusion of the new symbols in Therion?

I'm asking because I want to release them to general use and, outside of this
list, people usually aren't that familiarized with Therion so I would prefer to
give a final set of instructions on how to use the new symbols.

That's why I don't want to release them as user symbols now if in a short time
they will be incorporated as Therion main symbols.

If you want I can help finalize the inclusion of the symbols in Therion's code.
If you do at least one symbol I will be more sure I do all the adaptations
accordingly.

Please let me know and sorry for putting some pressure. It isn't my intention
at all.

The result shown in your "map -map-fg-gray - symbols centred on grid.pdf" file
is exactly what I expected and wanted. What would you have in mind?

Of these I believe only gate should actually allow the background color to show
through. I believe the others actually work better this way as I even created
them with backgound color show through and changed them afterwards.

About the gate point: making background color show through is kind of a black
magic in Metapost. As gate has several hollow spaces, it got harder than I
thought it was worthwhile but it can definitely be done.

You made 2 PDFs with rotated symbols. The first one has some symbols that seem
off to me but the second one has the exact behaviour I want and expect. Was it
created without any align option, isn't it?

As far as I can see, it's all related to the order you choose to apply the
transformations. I used the align before the rotate. If you move the align to
be done after the rotate the behaviour changes. Maybe you could test a little
bit and propose a better order for the transformations after testing several
use cases.

I apllied the align parameter to several of them and got no error. Can you send
a file where you see this issue?

I'm not sure I fully understand your issue. The result for rotated and right
aligned symbols seemed more intuitive to me when I inverted the align and the
rotate transformations in symbols. I bet that would be a nice change but I
wonder if you are talking about something more subtle that I have not fully
understood yet.

To do that I need to see how to deal with texts in symbols. I haven't done that

Let me just see what's necessary to actually include the already made symbols

This method was not created by me and unfortunately I can't remember nor find
out where I saw this method for the first time.

It's basically:

1. create your drawing on your favorite vector drawing software (I used
Inkscape)

2. export to EPS

3. convert the EPS to Metapost with pstoedit

4. finalize the new Therion symbol on your favorite code editor.

This is the happy trail for points without holes.

Holes can be harder, specially if you actually want them to be holes and not
plain white.

And for lines, it's a whole other can of worms.

Areas are similar to points.

Certainly. It's just that, right now I ahve them as user defined symbols. I
would have to change a few things so they wuld be Thjerion symbols. I jsut
don't want to have the work of doing these changes if there is no interest in
including them as Therion symbols.

[Therion] New symbols

2019-11-24 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

I have create the following 52 new symbols for Therion:

Therion symbol set Topodroid symbol group

Points:

I would like to offer them to be included in Therion's source code.

My suggestion it to incorporate them Therion distributed in 2 symbol sets: the
existing UIS one and on a new one to be called EGB.

The ones to go to UIS have their images inspired by similar symbols from UIS.
The ones to go to EGB are ones that I can't identify some already existing
symbol set to receive them so I am proposing a new symbol set named EGB (for
Espeleo Grupo de Brasília = Brasilia's Speleo Group, my speleo group) as many
of these symbols were demanded by some fellow members of EGB.

This is my suggestion but obvioulsy we can choose any other path, for example:

-  distribue them differently among symbol set's;

-  incorporate just some of them in Therion's source code;

- not incoporate any of them (I would distribute them as stadalone files to be
used by the interested parties as user symbols).

As I mentioned, we can follow any prefered path.

Please let me know if the idea is to incorporate them in Therio's source code,
as I would have to adapt them

I believe the ones I will be creating first will be rather general use.

You talk about making them available via the wiki. Is there already a space in
the wiki with shared symbols? I looked for it (rather quickly, I confess) but
coudln't find any.

My main idea is to have a "complete" symbol set to use. From this point of view
the best approach would be to complete the most complete one but I will
probably work with the UIS one as being the most standartized one.

How does it work exactly? What is the list of symbol sets searched by Therion?
In which order are they searched? I couldn't find references to this in Therion
Book (in another quick search).

How?

[Therion] ***UNCHECKED*** Merging symbol sets

2019-10-10 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

Is it possible to merge 2 or more symbol sets by defining more than one symbol
to be used?

In case of conflict (same symbol defined in to different sets) , the last one
could be the one that would be used.

Is there a way to do this kind of automatic merge?

[Therion] ***UNCHECKED*** Completing symbol sets

2019-10-10 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

After creating several missing symbols for Topodroid, I want to create missing
symbols for Therion.

I want to produce at least one complete symbol set.

Should I create a new one, copy the symbols already defined that I'm interested
and create the new symbols, or maybe should I just include missing symbols in
some of the existent sets?

How should I proceed?

I would bet it has something to do with the text of each legend item. The
vertical space might be affected by text spacing that might not be constant
depending on the actual letters of each text.

Hi,

I trying to work in a topo I make recently. One of the sketches got way

can't read "xth(me,cmds,5,18,x)": no such element in array

I already reduced the file to something really small and I still get these
errors most of the times I try to open it.

Any ideas on what could be the cause?

I send attached both a small version of the sketch that presents the error

Re: [Therion] Trouble scrap: metapost exit code 35584

2017-06-25 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
First of all I would like to thank both Bruce and Martin for the nice
suggestions the presented to improve my map. Just a clarification: this is
a "crude" map, just as it was produced with Topodroid. We haven't worked on
it yet. It was just a try compilation to see what we got to start with.

Now on my compile issue: the problem is with the user defined point
*u:water-drip*. Apparently Therion doesn't accept a dash on a user subtype
identifier. I bet it's a consequence of the symbol name restriction stated
at Therion Book's page 71. Maybe this restriction on user subtype
identifiers should be mentioned at the end of page 24.

Renaming the user type from *u:water-drip* to *u:waterdrip* or
*u:water_drip* fix my compilation issue.

Hi,

Here is the link to all class material of a portuguese course I taught on
DistoX + Topodroid + Therion: https://goo.gl/YsDLhk

I wonder how could I make it available through Therion's wiki page.

Xavier,

You are right, saving the JPG file with Windows file viewer makes the
JPG file compatible with Windows XTherion.

The problem is with the use of the "Progressive" JPEG option in GIMP.
Even in GIMP, if you save the JPEG file without the "Progressive"
option, the JPEG file became readable by Windows XTherion.

But the error message is really cryptic:

invalid name command "ÿØÿà

Who would think this is about an unsupported option when saving the JPEG file ;)

[Therion] Xtherion error when importing JPG in Windows

2017-03-25 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

Several users got the error on the image attached when trying to import a
JPG image on XTherion on Windows. One single user succeded importing a JPG
image on XTherion on Windows.

These XTherions were able to import a PNG image.

They were all using Therion for Windows available at
https://therion.speleo.sk/downloads/therion-setup-dev.exe

How can they import JPG images?

I trying to compile latest therion on Windows.

I`m getting a "therion.tcl file not found" during xtherion "compilation". I
believe therion.tcl is autogenerated, isn't it?

I understand your idea but can you present an working example of
*unselect* actually
unselecting a map?

After Bruce called my attention to the fact that this issue has being
dicussed before, I couldn't find an example of *unselect* making any
difference in the final result.

I will try some little debugging on Therion's code to see if I understand
why that's happening. I don't think that's by design, it looks like a bug
to me.

I'm sorry, I might have mislead you. These map definitions aren' t all on
the same file.

In fact it's like that:

Bart/thconfig:

layout exploracao
  scale 1 200
  base-scale 1 100
  #debug station-names
  language pt
  #grid bottom
  #grid-size 100 100 10 m
  code tex-map
  \framethickness=0.5mm
  sketches off
  legend on
  legend-width 21 cm
  legend-columns 3
  statistics explo-length off
endlayout

layout aranha
  scale 1 200
  base-scale 1 100
  #debug station-names
  language pt
  #grid bottom
  #grid-size 100 100 10 m
  code tex-map
  \framethickness=0.5mm
  sketches off
endlayout

input extra_symbols.th

language pt

# Selecionando qual mapa deve ser desenhado
select mBartp@bart
export map -projection plan -layout exploracao -layout extra_symbols
-output Bart.pdf

#unselect mBartp@bart
#select mBarts@bart
#export map -projection elevation -layout extra_symbols -output
Bart-cortes.pdf

unselect mBarts@bart
unselect mBartp@bart
select mBartAranhap@bart
export map -layout-debug station-names -layout aranha -output
Bart-aranha.pdf

Bart/Bart.th:

map mBartp -projection plan -title "Gruta Bart Cave"
m1p@1
m2p@2
  endmap

map mBarts -projection elevation -title "Gruta Bart Cave"
#m1p@1
m2s@2
  endmap

map mBartAranhap -projection plan -title "Gruta Bart Cave"
m1aranhap@1
m2aranhap@2
  endmap

Bart/2017-02-12/1.th:

  map m1p -projection plan
#mc1p@c
mc2p@c
mb1p@b
mb2p@b
#mb3p@b
break
mc3p@c [-22 0 m] below
  endmap

  map m1aranhap -projection plan
b
#c
  endmap

Bart/2017-02-26/2.th:

  map m2p -projection plan
m1p@f
  endmap

  map m2aranhap -projection plan
a
#f
  endmap

As far as I can tell, all maps, sketchs and surveys are included and
properly recognized.

I think I'm not understanding the process of *select/unselect*. If I
do a *select
A_MAP* in thconfig and later do an *unselect A_MAP* I'm expecting to have a
result after the *unselect A_MAP* exactly the same as if I have never done
the *select A_MAP* at all.

Isn't that how it's supposed to be?

Here they are:

map mBartp -projection plan -title "Gruta Bart Cave"

m2p@2
  endmap

map mBartAranhap -projection plan -title "Gruta Bart Cave"
m1aranhap@1

a, b, c and f are surveys.

Is that enough or you need the definitions all way down?

[Therion] Trying to understand relation between select/unselect and export

2017-03-01 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

I have a thconfig with the following exports:

layout exploracao
  scale 1 200
  base-scale 1 100
  language pt
  code tex-map
  \framethickness=0.5mm
  sketches off
  legend on
  legend-width 21 cm
  legend-columns 3
  statistics explo-length off
endlayout

layout aranha
  scale 1 200
  base-scale 1 100
  debug station-names
  language pt
  code tex-map
  \framethickness=0.5mm
  sketches off
endlayout

select mBartp@bart
export map -projection plan -layout exploracao -layout extra_symbols
-output Bart.pdf

unselect mBartp@bart
select mBartAranhap@bart
export map -layout aranha -output Bart-centerline.pdf

If I compile with the above settings I get the following 2 maps:

Bart.pdf - https://goo.gl/zmnR3Y
Bart-centerline.pdf - https://goo.gl/SaFF37

The first one is exactly what I expect but the second isn't as the second
one should have only the centerline.

If I comment the first 2 lines and run like this:

#select mBartp@bart
#export map -projection plan -layout exploracao -layout extra_symbols
-output Bart.pdf

unselect mBartp@bart
select mBartAranhap@bart
export map -layout aranha -output Bart-centerline.pdf

I get the Bart-centerline.pdf as expected: https://goo.gl/dpZaEB Why is
that? *unselect mBartp@bart* shouldn't remove mBartp@bart from the export?

Great news. So the problem doesn't affects Windows at all apparently.
Thanks Bruce and Footleg for your help.

It would be nice to know if it affects Mac.

I want to set up a dynamic debugging structure to try to further debug this
issue. Any suggestions?

Just to understand, all options of the "Edit line" contextual menu for a
line point worked just the same as if you called these same options from
the button menu on the right panel?

   - Insert point
   - Delete point
   - Split line
   - Trace line
   - Convert to curve
   - Simplify

Is that it?

Platform/OS? Version? Distro? did you build it yourself or use a
supplied binary?

Ubuntu 15.10 and 16.04. Both with Debian package 5.3.16.

Ubuntu 16.04 with compiled version from github yesterday.

[Therion] xtherion: "Edit line" contextual menu for line points doesn't work

2017-02-23 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

I can't make any of xtherion's "Edit line" contextual menu options to work.
When I right click on a line point and choose some of the "Edit line"
submenu options nothing happens: no error, no change on the line, just the
menu disappears.

I have being trying to debug this for a while now. It's true that I spent
more time learning Tcl/Tk than actually debuging but that's not that
relevant ;)

If I use the "Edit line" button menu on the right pane everything works as
expected.

I already found out that this menu's definition starts at me.tcl line 2102
and that it's attached to the contextual menu at me_cmds.tcl line 3414.

I also found out that the actual command defined for each of "Edit line"
menu isn't called at all when activated through the contextual menu. They
are called just fine when they are activated from the side panel button
menu.

Any help? Suggestions? Pointers?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Therion] Translation doubt: what's a "clay-tree" point?

2017-02-21 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Great examples. Thanks!

One more doubt. The example Cawa Sorix sent seems to me as being the result
of some erosion process on the clay floor. The example sent by John Steves
and Benedikt Hallinger seems to be a result of some acumulative process
similar to stalagmites but made with clay.

Is that it? Both features receive this same name?

[Therion] Translation doubt: what's a "clay-tree" point?

2017-02-21 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

I'm making a small revision on the translations I did yesterday. I'm not
entirely satisfied with some of them.

What's a "clay-tree" point? I couldn't find out even searching Google.

[Therion] Interface translation

2017-02-21 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
After doing all translations available at the texts-xx.txt file as per
Therion Book instructions I see that only the texts used on the actual maps
are translated. But not xTherion's interface.

Is there some way to also translate xTherion's interface?

[Therion] Changing collation when using translated symbol names

2017-02-21 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

I just observed that even when presenting portuguese symbol names Therion
orders them using some non latin collation. I would bet ASCII.

I say so because, for example, *água* is the last point on the dropdown
list when it should be at the top, among the other symbol names that also
start with *A*.

Any suggestions on how to fix that?

I'm not sure I understood. Have you implemented Olly's proposal after
yesterday afternoon?

I'm asking because I got Therion's code yesterday afternoon and that code
got me the 768 metapost error that I had to fix by manually inserting the
*text-fonts* line in /etc/therion.ini. And again, just copying the
therion.ini would not have solved the issue as it has no uncommented lines
in it.

May be there should be a new text-fonts-optional line on source's
therion.ini file. Is that what's missing now?

Rodrigo

I just checked the diferences between *therion.ini* from the source tree
and the one at */etc/therion.ini*. There are a few but all on lines that
are commented, so they are irrelevant for this situation.

The only diference on a non commented line is exactly the line I included
in */etc/therion.ini* that is not present on the *therion.ini* file
available at the source and also wasn't at */etc/therion.ini* until I
included it myself.

So, no, coping the *therion.ini* available at the source to
*/etc/therion.ini* wouldn't fix my issue.

My issue is exactly the one discussed at the link you sent. Unfortunatelly
that issue isn't solved yet.

AFAICT, right now new Therion installations from source on Linux won't work
because of error 768.

[Therion] First use of locally compiled Therion: metapost error

2017-02-20 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

After managing to compile Therion I went to actually use it.

Just trying to compile the project I'm working on. It gave me the following
error:

 end of metapost log file
therion: error -- metapost exit code -- 768

To fix it I had to include the following line on */etc/therion.ini*

tex-fonts raw cmr10 cmti10 cmbx10 cmss10 cmssi10

despite Therion Book stating at page 80 that this is the default setting.

Should this line be uncommented on the default *therion.ini* file?

I can send a patch if this is the right way to solve this issue. Please ley
me know.

[Therion] First compilation of Therion in Ubuntu 16.04

2017-02-20 Thread Rodrigo Severo via Therion
Hi,

I'm trying to compile Therion (sources from github) on Ubuntu 16.04 for the
first time.

After installing several missing libraries I'm getting the following error:

make[1]: Entering directory '/home/rodrigo/devel/therion/loch'

make[1]: *** [loch] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/rodrigo/devel/therion/loch'
Makefile:202: recipe for target 'loch/loch' failed
make: *** [loch/loch] Error 2

The problem here is that libpng12.0-dev is already installed.

After some research I believe this might be a problem related to missing
symbols related to bad ordering of library inclusion:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19901934/strange-linking-error-dso-missing-from-command-line

How can I fix this?
