[TMIC] personal problem

2010-10-13 Thread Amanda Diskey
I don't write very often, and I normally wouldn't talk to people about
something
so personal, but I don't know who else to ask.  I have been having problems
with
constipation for a long time -- and it is only getting worse.  As of right now
I
have been unable to go to the bathroom for five days.  I have been taking
Senokot and Miralax, plus I have been prescribed Lactulose by  my neurologist.
I take magnesium citrate pretty often, but it really makes me miserable when I
take it.  My legs get really tight and shake uncontrollably from being
dehydrated.  My stomach actually hurts today and I'm normally don't feel pain
there.  I have been to doctors and they were no help.  It seems like they just
take my money and run because they don't have the answer.  When I went to the
gynecologist she actually asked me why I thought I needed to have a Pap smear
even though I told her I hadn't had one in over two years.  She just didn't
want
to deal with me because I cannot stand up.  I get this from a lot of doctors --
it seems like nobody wants to deal with me.  I couldn't even find a regular
family doctor-- a receptionist at one of the doctors offices I called actually
told me that she didn't think the doctors there would be able to handle my
case.  She said that if I was a regular person that was just dealing with colds
and other normal illnesses, that would be fine, but she didn't think they
would know what to do to help me.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I
could take to help me with this situation?  I am getting very desperate for
some
relief!
Thank you,
Amanda Diskey

Amanda,

this may sound silly but some foods may help you with this problem.

i have found that pinto beans help me.

i dont eat them regularly but when i do,i go.

very interesting topic especially when a lot of things we take for relief or to
treet our symptoms cause constipation which can cause multiple aggravations.

Amanda,
I was told to take cascara segrada, it is a natural bark that I purchased in a
health food store. That also may be the ingredient in smooth tea. This worked
great for me, I took it every three days, just one pill though over time the
problem got worse. My gastro told me that cascara segrada actually kills nerves
with long term use, hence the problem is now worse. I wish I had some great
cure for you, it is something I have dealt with for over 12 years. Don't let
yourself go to long, you don't want to get distended bowel, if you need, use an
enema.

Well, beans keep me regular most of the time. I've been eating 'frijoles'
since I was a little kid.

Prior to my colonoscopy, I was to take Dulcolax (http://www.dulcolaxusa.com/)
and it worked very well in cleaning out my pipes. It's also to be used for
'regular' constipation.
I also drank magnesium citrate, chilled, and with at least one tall glass of
water.

Check this out.

First-- I am so sorry to read of your discomfort and the
infuriatingly bad treatment.

This is fixable and the doctors should be working on it.
That you are in pain from it is untenable.

Bowel movement problems could be evidence of something else, as well as
being a symptom of TM.

You must see a physician about this, before it becomes something more
than it is.

When you say you cannot stand-- are you in wheelchair?
If so, do you use digital stimulation?

If this impaction is what is making you unable to stand -- please
call an emergency room

This might be about mechanics and it could also be about chemistry.

You should get someone to assess your diet: do you have any
allergies, are you lactose intolerant?

Is you liquid intake sufficient? Do you drink at least a quart of water a day?
Are you getting sufficient fiber, veggies, fruit?

But bottom line-- see someone today!

Best of luck, keep us posted,
Akua

Folks,
You need to understand that the email address in the from line is NOT the
actual sender of the email! Their computer has been hacked, or you can say
that their address book has been hijacked by a spoofer who then sends out
mass emails to everybody in their address book with these links. If you
click on reply, the email that you send will NOT go to the person who you
believe to be the sender, but it will just go out to an empty (not
legitimate) email address.

The safest thing to do is to delete the email without clicking on the link.
If you know the person and you know it is not their character to send an
email with just an unfamiliar link without an explanation, you need to
assume that this person did NOT actually send the email to you.

These people (celrods, ladynotes and whoever the other one was) are only
victims, they did NOT send these emails to you.
Hope this helps.
Take care,
Debbie

Re: [TMIC] personal problem - impaction

2010-10-13 Thread gorbat
I had impaction-like troubles within months of TM showing up. Doc said to
take Miralax - start at 17 gms a day and go up or down as it works for me.
Works perfect for years now. She said the tm affected something called my
mu factor in the GI tract which causes a generalized slowdown of the
peristalsis. Taking or eating too much fiber can cause fatal or near-lethal
bowel blockage or torsion because it sits too long in the GI tract, dries
out and surgery is the only option then. I don't get cramping or loss of
control with the miralax beyond what I ever had with senocot or even MOM

First-- I am so sorry to read of your discomfort and the infuriatingly bad
treatment.

This is fixable and the doctors should be working on it.
That you are in pain from it is untenable.

Bowel movement problems could be evidence of something else, as well as
being a symptom of TM.

You must see a physician about this, before it becomes something more than
it is.

When you say you cannot stand-- are you in wheelchair?
If so, do you use digital stimulation?

If this impaction is what is making you unable to stand -- please call an
emergency room

This might be about mechanics and it could also be about chemistry.

You should get someone to assess your diet: do you have any allergies, are
you lactose intolerant?
Is you liquid intake sufficient? Do you drink at least a quart of water a
day?

Are you getting sufficient fiber, veggies, fruit?

But bottom line-- see someone today!

Best of luck, keep us posted,
Akua

You need to understand that the email address in the “from” line is NOT the
actual sender of the email! Their computer has been hacked, or you can
say that their address book has been hijacked by a “spoofer” who then sends

you click on “reply”, the email that you send will NOT go to the person who
you believe to be the sender, but it will just go out to an empty (not
 legitimate) email address.

The safest thing to do is to delete the email without clicking on the link.
If you know the person and you know it is not their character to send an
email with just an unfamiliar link without an explanation, you need to
“assume” that this person did NOT actually send the email to you.

These people (celrods, ladynotes and whoever the other one was) are only
victims, they did NOT send these emails to you.

 Hope this helps.

Re: [TMIC] personal problem

2010-10-13 Thread Barbara H.
Amanda, I have problems along those lines sometimes, too. The thing that
helps me most is eating fresh fruits and vegetables -- it has gotten to the
point that if I have a day or so that I don't eat them, I can almost count
on having trouble. Canned fruits used to help, but they don't any more. I
keep grapes and baby carrots on hand as they're the easiest to just rinse
and eat, but I also try to eat salads regularly, too..

Also, exercise really helps immensely, but this is a problem for many TMers,
especially those who can't walk. Is there someone who can exercise your
legs, range of motion exercises and that kind of thing?

Hope you get some relief soon.

You are definitely the exception rather than the rule...great for you if
you've been able to avoid UTI's...don't forget though teat you don't have as
much bacteria 'up there' as a woman who's parts are 'down there' where
moisture is constantly a problem...not to mention menstruation.

A woman should never be allowed to go too long with an indwelling...if it's
going to be a long-term thing, it's usually switched to a suprapubic--which
is what will happen to me if I can't relearn to dress and self-cath.

I'm lucky in that my Urologist is widely renown for his work in the SCI
field. He's a wealth of information and was one of the docs who has pionered
urological care for women with SCIs. Also, with a foley, kidneys start
shutting down after ten or so years, so when possible, it should be capped
off to mimic the filling and emptying of the bladder.

Also, using an in-and-out catheter allows the bladder to expand and deflate
naturally where with the foley, it doesn't do this, which can lead to
 further problems.

Amanda,

I also used Cascara Segrada (recommended as an enema prior to having surgery)
which worked extremely well - almost too well! Luckily the nurse who told me to
use it said to stay close to a bathroom.

I have dealt with constipation for three years until about two months ago when
I decided to finally try taking the Activia challenge as Jaime Lee Curtis
advertises on TV. I have one container every morning first before eating
anything else and have not been constipated since! It took about seven to ten
days to regulate me, but I now go almost every single day - before I was
completely constipated and only going once every three to four days.
