I was wondering where the Touch stores the music database - in internal memory or on the connected USB device/SD card? Perhaps the reason why wireless causes a problem and wired does not is that there might be some CPU usage overhead to the wireless networking. This overhead could take CPU away from the playback? I appreciate your desire to support logitech and be a good forum member and jump in to defend. I'm sympathetic to your cause. Honest. At the same time very very few people have powered USB hubs. Device testing is hard work and takes time. I know because I do work at a company that makes A LOT of devices. Some you probably own or statistically at least one of your family member owns. It's sometimes not possible to test everything out there to be sure it works so I understand the easy stance of just supporting to spec and adding a disclaimer indicating the use of a powered hub. Still, I know logically that the hardware design could have helped solve the potential issue of a power hungry USB drive. Drives are getting better these days and even a 1TB usb drive can perform in spec. I have to believe though that in a lot of cases the new Touch owner is going to want to take their spare or older smaller usb drive that they upgraded from to attach permanently to the Touch. In this logical guess at how things might shake out in the field its a fair guess that the Touch will be trying to use some older hardware that might need some extra juice. I'm not beating anyone up here. It's very possible there was a meeting and it was decided that they would accept the Risk to goodwill and some returns of the product due to customer satisfaction over this issue. I've been there. That could mean changing the design if it made sense OR choosing to do nothing. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Help Buying 2.5 External Drive
The older I get, the less I like to fiddle around with and examine technical specifications. i know it can't be avoided completely, but I aim more and more for a 'toaster' mentality, where you just plug it in and it works. My SB3 experience was very close to that at first, but after some months I went round and round with router problems until i finally just bought a new one and it worked - I still don't know why the other one didn't - it used to, and it was fine for a laptop sitting right next to the squeeze. But, my point is that when aiming at a mainstream audience, Logitech should make it as easy as possible to get a music sytem working. They've made their design decisions and it is a good step to say a drive with specifications X, Y, Z will work but it would be even better to have an easy-to-find place on their website with recommended specific popular models of necessary auxiliary equipment that are known to work in normal situations. One shouldn't have to dig through forums and wikis to find that information. There are many people who don't have to watch the last penny and will be happy to buy something that they know will just work. Apple has been successful enough that iPod/Iphone compatibility is the standard that other manufactureres emulate. Wouldn't it be great if Logitech could do that with Squeezebox? But until then, come on, make it easy for us to spend money on your product. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] So, how does 24/96 sound on the Touch?
I've done listening and comparing 44.1 to 88.2 and 96 files and the truth is there is no clear advantage that I can hear. Sometimes 96 sounds better and sometimes it sounds worse. There is no obvious 96 always sounds better. I think it has far more to do with the method used for down/upsampling than any inherent superiority one way or the other. I have a bunch of 88.2 files that I recorded myself and these always sound better than down sampled ones, but I also have some tracks that I have that I got commercially of the same recording where the 44.1 actually sound better. In any case the differences are quite subtle, its not a night and day difference. If you have hi-rez files go ahead and listen to them at whatever rate they come in, and enjoy the 44.1 files you have as well. I would not obsess over it. I'm enjoying listening to all my 44.1 files over the Touch so much that I have no desire to go off and spend money on hi-rez stuff. When I do my own recording I'll do them in hi-rez because I can, but for spending a lot extra on commercial hi-rez recordings its not worth it to me at this point. There are five Now Playing screens on the Touch, and you can cycle among them, or leave it at the one you like. 1) cover art and basic info (artist, album, track) 2) cover art only 3) basic info only 4) spectrum analyzer VU meters 5) dual analog VU meters In the future it may be possible to limit the NP screens that are cycled to fewer than 5, but not at present. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Display info character size
In addition to the no artwork mode there are two sizes, referred to as small/large, or touch/remote or 3/10. The small size is used when you touch the screen, it has smaller text and buttons. The larger size is used when you use the IR remote, it has larger text and no buttons. The 3/10 means 3ft or 10ft, the distance that mode was designed for. Thus if your Touch is much greater than 10ft away even the larger size may be too small. Its a little bit smaller than the largest font on the SB3. In my case the rack is about 15ft away and the largest SB3 font is just big enough, but the 10 Touch font is just a little too small for comfort. mlsstl wrote: 1) I plugged my USB drive into the Touch and the scan seems painfully slow. It will play music in the meantime, but I'm still not done after 3 hours. The drive has just shy of 48,000 songs. A rescan on my server is about 45 to 50 minutes. I'm just trying to find out what to expect. The CPU and memory in the Touch are way slower than a typical server or PC. That is a lot of songs. I've never tried that many during beta testing, but I'm think that may be as expected. The internal Touch server was not intended to replace a full blown SqueezeBoxServer. It was designed for folks who didn't have a lot of music, didn't want to setup a server. 40,000 songs is a lot of songs. Even ten times as long as your real server would not be a surprize to me. All IMHO, Once you are done scanning, you don't have to replicate it often. I think the initial design was for folks with a USB thumb drive to show off a bit of music, or perhaps play music from an iPad or iPhone. -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
Hey guys, I plan to purchase a Touch to avoid going down the PC streamer route. I will be connecting it to an external hard drive directly via USB. But I have a few questions about this: 1) I have previously read that a directly connected USB drive with FLAC files does not have the same sound quality as using SBS on a PC streaming the same file in WAV format? Apparently, this was audible with $5 headphones. This was a while ago, so could somebody confirm if this is still the case. Does this effect only over analog outputs, or digital outputs as well? 2) Does the Touch enable gapless playback? If so, do I just get EAC to rip CDs as normal and the gaps will be in the flac files, or do I need to create cue sheets? In addition, if I rip an album to a directory, will the Touch automatically play through the whole album? 3) Does the Touch take a long time to scan files on the USB drive? Often, I might buy a CD, rip it to the USB drive and then reconnect the drive to the Touch. Will this cause long browsing delays? Thanks in advance!!! -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
Sorry, let me add a fourth. 4) Can a crossfeed plugin be installed to TinySC? Would the extra processing required comprimise sound quality? Does the plugin take effect when using the digital output? Obviously, this is no longer a bit perfect signal, but is turning the volume of the Touch to maximum enough to ensure no quality loss relative to the original, i.e., modified bit perfect? -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
I was the one who reported those sound differences, are they still there? yes they are but they are very small differences now. Its very interesting, but the differences are easier to hear with cheap headphones. I've noticed the same thing with really cheap interconnects. The far than perfect accessories degrade everything enough that the differences are more obvious. That seems counter-intuitive but that is what seems to happen. With good headphones and interconnects ($40 headphones instead of $5 ones, $10 interconnects instead of $.50 ones) every thing gets better and its harder to tell the differences. I would not worry about it, do NOT make this the deciding factor on whether to use the builtin server or an external server. @peterw Thankyou, but I won't be connecting the Touch to a home network. It will be just taking the USB drive between the PC and Touch I'm afraid. -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

It should be fairly easy to take the code for the NP meter screen and rip out the buttons and just leave the meters and package it as a screensaver. It should be a nice first applet exercise. Want to try it? :-) John S. Hi John, Yes, but as I don't really have a gift for programming, you risk to have a very strange screensaver... Other matter: Do you know if it's possible to customize the title format in the Now playing screen?
