I've never seen any claim that it will replace the real SqueezeBoxServer in all cases. I expect that over time, the TinySC will grow and be more capable, but its never going to be as capable as a old discarded desktop PC with real memory and real CPU. Its good as a replacement for your ancient Classic, and for folks with limited requirements the bundled TinySC is fine. For years, folks have bought SqueezeBoxen and then complained that they had to run a server. So the TinySC solves the problem for a lot of folks. But not for all. Integrated with squeezeboxserver and mysqueezebox.com ? 1 2 is possible for 3rd party devs to accomplish 3 needs logitechs cooperation. As far as I know there isn't any guideline available, at least have haven't seen any. I suspect it's decided based on if the server needs to know about the setting or if it needs to be possible to remote control from a Controller, if it doesn't it's handled locally. Things that needs to be remotely controlled by a Squeezebox Controller have to be known by the server or accessed through the server. If a typical user likes to sit in the couch when changing something, it needs to be accessible through the Controller. That's one reason why for example volume is possible to control/view via the server. Some typical guidelines when things should be implemented/accessible through eh server: - When the typical user is going to control it from the couch - When it's something that's changed several times a week Third party add-ons are probably going to focus on local applet implementation/patches because patching the server isn't fun at all, especially on Windows where it's a compiled exe. Some things can be implemented as third party plugins on the server side but many of these things will require modifications to the core code of the server to make it a good solution. Also most settings accessible through the server are also expected to work on MySB unless it's something that's only relevant to local music. I suspect balance would have been accessed via the server if Logitech implemented it, because they probably want it to be accessible by a Squeezebox Controller. We are probably going to see a local implementation if it's done by third parties, at least initially. For the balance setting, I personally don't think a local implementation is a big problem, most users that like to setup balance is probably going to set it up once and then never touch it again. In most cases, the reason to adjust balance is because of non optimal room layout or speaker placement. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) (Install my plugins through Extension Downloader) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library, Title Switcher and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=1 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

In this use-case my opinion is that the recording should be permanently fixed via editing, because then it will be usuable on other players which may not have balance control either. I also think that a real headless workmode, which switches off all graphic related routines on the SW side and the hardware side would be nice. To me you're confirming my finding too. If you call the changes subtle, fair enough - in a way they are subtle. If you hear them on the headphone they will have a higher impact on a real good system in terms of e.g. depth of stage. You'll never hear that kind of stage through your headphones anyhow. So, the next stage in this discussion will be that your measurements won't show anything. If these don't show anything there is nothing, will be the next argument. Phil, believe me, I had arguments about this topic at AA with Gordon Rankin etc. It took them almost 3 years to figure out or rather to admit that there is something they can't properly explain. The great thing with the Touch is that it got rid of 90% of all the trouble making sources in comparison to a standard PC. And the other good thing is that a little tweaking will make it even better. And I am also sure that a revised DUET would have been better performing than a Touch - at least on 44.1/16. The DUET was as slim as a streaming client(a FPGA based device) can get. I am sure that the Touch would face a hard time today to beat an revised DUET( PS, SPDIF and other HW tweaks as discussed in the forum ). Cheers Play and listen - AB comparisons - it was pretty obvious to me.. ... and that isn't an opinion? The Touch is a completely different design to the Duet. In my opinion (!) no amount of Duet mods will improve it over a stock Touch. There seems to be something about the implementation of the Touch headphone circuit that could be improved, since it appears that if headphones are connected AND a USB drive is connected, there is some degradation. This should be measurable with ADM and I hope to do such a test soon. I have no preconception about what the results will be. However, if you record the analogue output of a Duet or SB3 and compare back to the original wav file via ADM and repeat with the Touch you will find that the Touch is closer to the truth (ie closer to the original file). -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... The new 2.6.33-rt and Alsa 1.0.22b are ways more advanced then the used 2.6.26-rt and Alsa 1.0.16). One thing is obvious to me, the designers are aware of certain challenges associated to realtime audio streaming from a PC - that's why they have chosen a rt-kernel. The monitor must be causing extra load and interferences, etc. too. For sure the designers were facing huge challenges to get the Touch where it is today. Well, I know you are going to disagree, but here is a TEST anyway: Source: 30-second WAV clip of Limehouse Blues from Jazz at the Pawnshop Replayed via SBS and via TinySC (using a self powered USB drive), analogue (RCA) out captured into M-Audio 24/96 @24/44.1 ADM comparison (at highest possible quality settings - takes a long time to run) of the two recordings shows that the difference is white noise @ -86dB which I would put down to self-noise in the input stage of the M-Audio ADC and mostly the analogue output stage of the Touch. Well - very interesting. I plugged in some Sennheiser PMX60's into the Touch and repeated the test above, comparing TinySC with phones in vs. TinySC with no phones. The overall correlation null drops by 6dB to -80dB, meaning that with Phones connected the analogue signal via RCA out is changed. What is more, the change is mostly on the Right channel out of the Touch. The left channel is much less affected by the Phones being in-circuit (2dB). I repeated the test several times with consistent results. I would expect this small difference to be detectable by some people under the right circumstances. It will probably depend on which phones are used - I'm guessing the impedance will matter. I don't think this software is going to help at all with jitter testing. 1) (on analogue) there are two sorts of differences you encounter - white noise at very low level - probably inaudible - and residual traces of the music... potentially audible unless very low level. Based on my experience, anything below -80dB (as reported on ADM for 16-bit material) is almost certainly inaudible in practice. 2) wrt jitter testing - it does help IF you record the analogue output from the DAC - because that is where the effects of any jitter actually manifest themselves. Recording the spdif is something you do once to prove to yourself it works... The only meaningful way to record spdif is to lock the soundcard sample rate clock to the incoming stream. Looking for jitter prior to a DAC is like looking for a needle in a haystack... 3) The resolution of the AD (in my case 24/96) does not really matter as you are looking for deltas between 2 (theoretically) steady state conditions. Provided that the AD res is equal to or higher than the source material... it works. Once you have a difference file, you need to listen to it and study it with a spectrum analyser/plotter. Usually the difference will need to be amplified a lot (e.g. +50dB of gain). Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] digital silence between tracks?
I have a Cambridge DacMagic and always get a brief gap between FLAC and WAV files at 24/88.1 and 24/96 when one track ends and the next begins. This is separate from the stuttering issue which appears to be CPU related and is discussed in another thread (I get this brief dropout for all combinations of FLAC/WAV and wired/wireless connectivity for 44.1 kHz files). I do not see the light change on my DAC when it segues from the end of one track to the beginning of the next (and I get the brief gap); however, when I use the key to jump ahead to the next track, I do see the light jump to 44.1 on the DAC briefly. I will sign on to the bugreport if it's useful to folks. Hopefully this one can be fixed easily, it is quite a bummer to not have gapless with hirez. -- Leigh Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10619 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77849 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Would you consider a mirror of your music on another drive that is one of the supported file systems? Hi Pounce, u have a good point with the external drives being cheap, and probably will end up doing as per your suggestion. My concern with the filesystem is that I'm a sysadmin and after 13 years of practice I've grown very dependable on the features of the XFS filesystem and recently also from Sun's ZFS (snapshots and the ability to roll-back is bliss. EXT2/3/4 and reiserfs have let me down and crying more than once, and I have a huge collection of flac's that I don't intend to loose to an fsck_of_death from a power failure. Currently I own a Boom connected to slackware server with my flac volume mounted as read-only (yes, I remount it manually in read-write mode every time I add a new rip to my collection). This has several advantages, for instance: - no power failure can corrupt my collection - using XFS command xfs_fsr it defragments and reorganize the inodes making access to massive ammounts of data very quickly, efficently and multi-threaded. This is most noticeable when I stream to my boom and also export the volume using samba for example to play on $random foobar player. - XFS was designed by SGI (Silicon Graphics) for multimedia and massive amounts of data. - there's _no_ fsck of death in XFS, it's journalling/recovery features are very good. anyway, I don't mean to bore u guys with technical details, I'm so eager to get a touch that I'll surely buy it all the same. @Grahame, my backup setup is complicated, but to answer your question: I have a cron job that tar's copies my flac volume to an NFS share on a Solaris server, there I snapshot it with another cron job weekly on a ZFS volume. [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Vs Transporter as a transport
Now that the wait is over, I would like to solicit opinions from Touch owners out there who also own a Transporter. As an ex-Transporter owner who is thinking of re-acquiring one, I am very interested to know if the Touch managed to sound as good or better than the Transporter. After all being a few years younger the processing power and chipsets may have been improved? Has anyone done a sonic comparison between the Transporter and Touch analogue out and/or digital out? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Vs Transporter as a transport
To repeat my other post on the subject. The Transporter has balanced analog outs. If you will be using these, the TP is the obvious choice. Now that that is out of the way on to the RCA analog outs. Both in measured and for my taste (IE my listening) the Transporter still has an edge here. Is it worth $1500 for the TP, that is very hard to say. For me it would depend on the rest of ones equipment. If one is going to be feeding a decent DAC, I say buy the Touch and use it as a digital transport. Again from what I measured and my listen tastes the TP is still better then the Touch even feeding a DAC, but one really has to have great equipment to get ones $1500 out of using the TP as a digital transport only. So for me it is not and will not just be a simple straight answer except when one needs Balanced Analog outs. In all other cases it depends on ones other components and how much one really has to spend on a digital transport. So as just a transport, in most cases just buy a Touch. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Second Boom Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77973 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] balance?
May I add another use case for your consideration. I have a set of CDs that consist of contra dance music played more slowly and simply than normal so that musicians that play by ear and are not very proficient can learn the tunes. The tunes have been recorded with the instruments carrying the tune on one channel and the accompanying instruments on the other channel. Once you think that you are capable of playing with a group, you turn off the volume on which ever channel you are playing and you supply the missing music, providing an opportunity to experience ensemble playing without terminal embarrassment. (Example: if I live long enough, I may finally learn one of the tune on my button accordion. Then I can turn off the fiddle channel and play while the guitar accompanies me on the other channel.) It would be handy to be able to do that without having to save the two channels to separate files. I do understand that this will not be a priority for the Logitechs. It is just that with folks working on the balance issues, I thought they might like to know about this case. As far as I am concerned there is no rush. My accordion playing is not even up to the slow uncomplicated level, but it would be a public service to implement a function that would divert me from ever taking it out in public. -- mpower9 mpower9's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33930 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=1 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
