Er, its a fine, limited SBServer.
Its not a full blown PC/mac running SBServer, its too small in RAM and
the CPU is too slow.

Its called TinySC for a reason. I've never seen any claim that it will
replace the real SqueezeBoxServer in all cases.

I expect that over time, the TinySC will grow and be more capable, but
its never going to be as capable as a old discarded desktop PC with real
memory and real CPU.

Its good as a replacement for your ancient Classic, and for folks with
limited requirements the bundled TinySC is fine.

For years, folks have bought SqueezeBoxen and then complained that they
had to run a server. So the TinySC solves the problem for a lot of
folks. But not for all.

If I were King, I might have released the Touch last year without
TinySC, because its a nice player. But I'm not King.

 3. Integrated with squeezeboxserver and mysqueezebox.com ?

1 2 is possible for 3rd party devs to accomplish 3 needs logitechs
 cooperation.

As far as I know there isn't any guideline available, at least have
haven't seen any. I suspect it's decided based on if the server needs
to know about the setting or if it needs to be possible to remote
control from a Controller, if it doesn't it's handled locally. Things
that needs to be remotely controlled by a Squeezebox Controller have to
be known by the server or accessed through the server. If a typical user
likes to sit in the couch when changing something, it needs to be
accessible through the Controller. That's one reason why for example
volume is possible to control/view via the server.

Some typical guidelines when things should be implemented/accessible
through eh server:
- When the typical user is going to control it from the couch
- When it's something that's changed several times a week

Third party add-ons are probably going to focus on local applet
implementation/patches because patching the server isn't fun at all,
especially on Windows where it's a compiled exe. Some things can be
implemented as third party plugins on the server side but many of these
things will require modifications to the core code of the server to make
it a good solution. Also most settings accessible through the server are
also expected to work on MySB unless it's something that's only relevant
to local music.

I suspect balance would have been accessed via the server if Logitech
implemented it, because they probably want it to be accessible by a
Squeezebox Controller. We are probably going to see a local
implementation if it's done by third parties, at least initially. For
the balance setting, I personally don't think a local implementation
is a big problem, most users that like to setup balance is probably
going to set it up once and then never touch it again. In most cases,
the reason to adjust balance is because of non optimal room layout or
speaker placement.

The use-case where it isn't set forget has been exposed in this
thread already - sub-optimal recordings. In this use-case my opinion is
that the recording should be permanently fixed via editing, because then
it will be usuable on other players which may not have balance control
either.

So, a player-side patch would work for most people who need this
feature and there is a viable workaround (that IMO is actually a better
solution anyway) for the rest.

graphic related routines on the SW side and the hardware side would be
nice.
Because even if the screen is turned off it doesn't necessarily mean

This mode should be manageable via a parameter config on the server or

BTW:

What I realized is if I stop playback by deleting the entire playlist

Hmmh, interesting statement and very strong argumentation. You need
to read it twice though to figure that there is a slight contradiction
 in that statement. ;)

However, if you say there is nothing, there is nothing. Fair enough,
even though it sounds like your personal opinion to me.

I could ask you now what system are we talking about in your case - I
won't do that - since it doesn't mean anything anyhow!

To me you're confirming my finding too. If you call the changes subtle,
fair enough - in a way they are subtle. If you hear them on the
 headphone
they will have a higher impact on a real good system in terms of e.g.
depth of stage. You'll never hear that kind of stage through your
 headphones anyhow.

So, the next stage in this discussion will be that your measurements
won't show anything. If these don't show anything there is nothing,
 will be the next argument.

Phil, believe me, I had arguments about this topic at AA with Gordon
Rankin etc. It took them almost 3 years to figure out or rather to
admit that there is something they can't properly explain.

The great thing with the Touch is that it got rid of 90% of all the
trouble making sources in comparison to a standard PC. And the other
good thing is that a little tweaking will make it even better.

And I am also sure that a revised DUET would have been better
performing than a Touch - at least on 44.1/16. The DUET was as slim as
a streaming client(a FPGA based device) can get.
I am sure that the Touch would face a hard time today to beat an
revised DUET( PS, SPDIF and other HW tweaks as discussed in the forum
 ).

 Cheers

Play and listen - AB comparisons - it was pretty obvious to me..

... and that isn't an opinion?

The Touch is a completely different design to the Duet. In my opinion
(!) no amount of Duet mods will improve it over a stock Touch.

There seems to be something about the implementation of the Touch
headphone circuit that could be improved, since it appears that if
headphones are connected AND a USB drive is connected, there is some
degradation.

This should be measurable with ADM and I hope to do such a test soon.
I have no preconception about what the results will be.

However, if you record the analogue output of a Duet or SB3 and compare
back to the original wav file via ADM and repeat with the Touch you will
find that the Touch is closer to the truth (ie closer to the original
file).

You missed the logic behind my arguments.

The Touch must be considered a PC like device. It has a running Linux
incl. Alsa sound layer as base on it ( I know how much trouble this
stuff can cause. The Logitech guys are using a pretty old Kernel/Alsa
for the Touch btw. -- which might be OK for their purposes.. The new
2.6.33-rt and Alsa 1.0.22b are ways more advanced then the used
2.6.26-rt and Alsa 1.0.16).

One thing is obvious to me, the designers are aware of certain
challenges associated to realtime audio streaming from a PC - that's
why they have chosen a rt-kernel.

The monitor must be causing extra load and interferences, etc. too.
For sure the designers were facing huge challenges to get the Touch
where it is today.

Though, if you follow the logic Less is more the DUET IMO delivers
the much higher potential. Of course a stock DUET wouldn't ever beat a
Touch.

From a commercial perspective there is no question that the Touch is
the more appealing and probably better selling device. A revised DUET
would have not been sellable. If you don't have at least 24/96 on your
spec you're out today.

2010-04-26 Thread Phil Leigh

Well, I know you are going to disagree, but here is a TEST anyway:

Source: 30-second WAV clip of Limehouse Blues from Jazz at the
Pawnshop
Replayed via SBS and via TinySC (using a self powered USB drive),
analogue (RCA) out captured into M-Audio 24/96 @24/44.1

ADM comparison (at highest possible quality settings - takes a long
time to run) of the two recordings shows that the difference is white
noise @ -86dB which I would put down to self-noise in the input stage
of the M-Audio ADC and mostly the analogue output stage of the Touch.

So with a self-powered USB drive there is NO difference on the analogue
outs between TinySC and SBS.

Not an opinion... a fully repeatable test.

Now to find some headphones...

This way the Radio and Touch can utilize Applets without ever

Well - very interesting.
I plugged in some Sennheiser PMX60's into the Touch and repeated the
test above, comparing TinySC with phones in vs. TinySC with no phones.

The overall correlation null drops by 6dB to -80dB, meaning that with
Phones connected the analogue signal via RCA out is changed. What is
more, the change is mostly on the Right channel out of the Touch. The
left channel is much less affected by the Phones being in-circuit
(2dB). I repeated the test several times with consistent results.

I would expect this small difference to be detectable by some people
under the right circumstances. It will probably depend on which phones
are used - I'm guessing the impedance will matter.

I'll try and see what happens with Phones in and replay via sbs...

When you see a difference how do you know it's actually audible and not

The test approach would be to baseline with whatever AD you have

want to have as high of resolution as possible in theory to make this

wrt SPDIF I think the testing would want to look for Jitter which
would/could impact the DAC on the receiving end and result in audible
differences. I don't think this software is going to help at all with

Touch keeps a permanent connection to MySB. Given the fact that MySB
tends to still have performance issues on weekends, could this be a
scheduling issue or something related to that?

SqueezePlay runs all server communication links in the same thread in a
kind of cooperative-multitasking scheduler. If one of these connections
blocks, could it theoretically lock up others or at least consume
enough time to cause trouble with decoding even though I believe the
actual streaming happens on a different thread?

wrt SPDIF I think the testing would want to look for Jitter which

differences. I don't think this software is going to help at all with
 jitter testing.

1) (on analogue) there are two sorts of differences you encounter -
white noise at very low level - probably inaudible - and residual
traces of the music... potentially audible unless very low level. Based
on my experience, anything below -80dB (as reported on ADM for 16-bit
material) is almost certainly inaudible in practice.

2) wrt jitter testing - it does help IF you record the analogue output
from the DAC - because that is where the effects of any jitter actually
manifest themselves. Recording the spdif is something you do once to
prove to yourself it works... The only meaningful way to record spdif
is to lock the soundcard sample rate clock to the incoming stream.
Looking for jitter prior to a DAC is like looking for a needle in a
haystack...

3) The resolution of the AD (in my case 24/96) does not really matter
as you are looking for deltas between 2 (theoretically) steady state
conditions. Provided that the AD res is equal to or higher than the
source material... it works.

Once you have a difference file, you need to listen to it and study it
with a spectrum analyser/plotter. Usually the difference will need to
be amplified a lot (e.g. +50dB of gain). You soon get the hang of it.

scheduling issue or something related to that?

SqueezePlay runs all server communication links in the same thread in a
kind of cooperative-multitasking scheduler. If one of these connections
blocks, could it theoretically lock up others or at least consume
enough time to cause trouble with decoding even though I believe the
actual streaming happens on a different thread?

Could be an explanation, but I doubt it, because I had the big
stuttering-problems on weekdays as well. What also speaks against this
theory is the fact that my HR-Flacs stutterd last saturday when played
from USB, but I had no problem playing the same files from the SD-card.
And today, as I said before, no more problems at all, no matter what
device I use fo playback :-)

Well... the presence/absence of connected headphones has a much smaller
(measured) effect on SBS replay than it does on TinySC replay. Also the
impact is still greater on the right channel with both SBS and TinySC.

I'd need to study the circuit diagram and physical board layout to even
hazard a guess at this l/r discrepancy...with phones connected and
why the connection of phones seems to affect TinySC more than SBS.

Do you have an SD card to test TinySC with USB and SD to see if it's a

I'll have to agree that availability for the Touch has been very spotty

Availability is much better in Europe, and is slowly catching up in the

The Touch is definitely not discontinued; the factory is gearing up to

1) because he has a type of DAC that has an issue switching rapidly
from 96-44.1-96 - some DACs do that. It seems that the Touch - unlike
other models - reverts to 44.1 between tracks, whereas I think the
other devices hold the last used sample rate until a new one
arrives...I can't check on that at the moment - hands full with other
stuff.
2) No! - PaalJ you need to raise a bug, referencing this thread.

Because my power amps is directly connected to my DAC and the pop's and

It should not be necesary. As you can see I am a junior member and need

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch + SB3 in the same room?

2010-04-26 Thread superpin

Someone probably already figured this out, but what is the best way to
use a SB3 and a Touch in the same room? My plan was to put the Touch by
my sofa and use as a remote and cover art display, and keep my SB3 by
the amp and use it together with the normal IR remote. Is this
possible? If not I guess I have to downgrade my SB3 to a display,
turning off all IR and sync it to the Touch.

(tried to STF but its broken and I just got an empty screen)

That should work. You can use the touch as a controller. I'm doing
this with a SB receiver in my living room.

The touch is controllable with the IR remote too, so you'll want to
disable that via a setting in the web UI.

I have used a piece of tinted plastic on the end of the remote, it
reduces the signal enough that you have to point the remote at the unit
you want to control. (old batteries might accomplish the same thing)

Personally, I've degraded the SB3 to be a clock. The Touch produces
better sound quality so it seems like a waste to not output the audio
signal from it. The drawback is of course that the touch screen is
rarely used since it's placed by the amplifier and not by the couch.

Thanks Erland, then I at least have the option to turn off the IR on
the Touch, that was of course my real question and I don't know why I
didn't just ask how to accomplish that... ;)

I think I need to play around with the possibilities until I find what
works best (and yes, I know I will end up buying an ipod with ipeng,
the Touch by the amplifier looking cool and the SB3 as an display unit
that's actually readable from the whole room).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SQ: streaming vs. local operation

2010-04-26 Thread Phil Leigh

All tests are recorded from the analogue outs using the same 30 second
clip (see earlier post):

Left/Right Channel correlation: higher number = closer match (fewer
differences)

(USB disk not connected)
1) SD Card + Headphones in vs. SD Card + Headphones out: L:100/R:103

2) USB Disk + Headphones in vs. USB Disk + Headphones out: L:86/R:86

{USB Disk connected, TinySC running but not playing}
3) SBS + Headphones in vs. SBS + Headphones out: L:90/R:93

{headphones out, USB connected}
4) SD vs. USB: L:90/R:93
5) SD vs. SBS: L:83/R:84
6) USB vs SBS: L:99/R:100

{headphones out,USB Disk disconnected when SBS is used}

7) SD vs. SBS: L:91/R:95
8) USB vs. SBS: L:79/R:80

(headphones out)
9) SBS (USB connected) vs SBS (USB Disconnected): L:80/R:80

Interim Conclusions:

1) connecting headphones may affect RCA playback slightly, but only
when usb disk is also attached.
2) SD playback is unnaffected by headphones
3) Having the usb disk connected and TinySC running may affect SBS
playback...

Remember, correlations higher than circa 70 are usually heard as
identical under normal listening conditions.

of audio that is alleged to be encoded at better than CD quality of
 15/44.1?
This is indeed the heart of the matter. But it's not easy to conduct a
reliable test, especially single-handedly.

In addition to the CD and the 24/88.2 download, I've also made three
sets of digital files from the CD: WAV w/o compression, 320Kbps MP3 and
160Kbps MP3.

My system is real world, NOT audiophile: a Sony AVR and PSB Image 2B
loudspeakers. (In my audiophile days I owned Quad ESL-57s.)

I've only done a limited amount of comparisons, but I think I can
reliably say that I CANNOT easily discern the difference in quality of
audio between the 24/88.2 download and the CD quality WAV file.

More later, especially after I've brought the Touch out to a friend's
house for listening with a high-end system.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] digital silence between tracks?

2010-04-26 Thread Leigh

I have a Cambridge DacMagic and always get a brief gap between FLAC and
WAV files at 24/88.1 and 24/96 when one track ends and the next begins.
This is separate from the stuttering issue which appears to be CPU
related and is discussed in another thread (I get this brief dropout
for all combinations of FLAC/WAV and wired/wireless connectivity for
44.1 kHz files). I do not see the light change on my DAC when it segues
from the end of one track to the beginning of the next (and I get the
brief gap); however, when I use the key to jump ahead to the next
track, I do see the light jump to 44.1 on the DAC briefly.

I will sign on to the bugreport if it's useful to folks. Hopefully this
one can be fixed easily, it is quite a bummer to not have gapless with
hirez.

I'll vote too - I've just activated a different menu on my TACT and I
can see the rate dropping to either 44.1 or sometimes no lock when
skipping between 24/96 files. Doesn't do this at other rates.
Fortunately I don't have the DAC problem as the TACT keeps a permanent
outbound lock at 24/96 regardless of what is coming in...

Hi Pounce,

u have a good point with the external drives being cheap, and probably
will end up doing as per your suggestion.

My concern with the filesystem is that I'm a sysadmin and after 13
years of practice I've grown very dependable on the features of the XFS
filesystem and recently also from Sun's ZFS (snapshots and the ability
to roll-back is bliss. EXT2/3/4 and reiserfs have let me down and
crying more than once, and I have a huge collection of flac's that I
don't intend to loose to an fsck_of_death from a power failure.
Currently I own a Boom connected to slackware server with my flac
volume mounted as read-only (yes, I remount it manually in read-write
mode every time I add a new rip to my collection). This has several
advantages, for instance:

- no power failure can corrupt my collection
- using XFS command xfs_fsr it defragments and reorganize the inodes
making access to massive ammounts of data very quickly, efficently and
multi-threaded. This is most noticeable when I stream to my boom and
also export the volume using samba for example to play on $random
foobar player.
- XFS was designed by SGI (Silicon Graphics) for multimedia and massive
amounts of data.
- there's _no_ fsck of death in XFS, it's journalling/recovery features
are very good.

anyway, I don't mean to bore u guys with technical details, I'm so
eager to get a touch that I'll surely buy it all the same.

@Grahame, my backup setup is complicated, but to answer your question:

I have a cron job that tar's copies my flac volume to an NFS share on
a Solaris server, there I snapshot it with another cron job weekly on a
ZFS volume. (I hope I was not to nerdy, feel free to ask me for further
clarifications).

thanks for the swift replies guys, I value the feedback u gave me :D

I've been able to trick the Touch to use an NFS share instead of local

It should keep the rate of the inter-track digital silence the same as
the PREVIOUSLY playing track. Not the next one!
That way there will be at most only one rate change, not two in quick
succession as at present. The other players work this way AFAICT. It's
a bug.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Vs Transporter as a transport

2010-04-26 Thread agentsmith

Now that the wait is over, I would like to solicit opinions from Touch
owners out there who also own a Transporter.

As an ex-Transporter owner who is thinking of re-acquiring one, I am
very interested to know if the Touch managed to sound as good or better
than the Transporter. After all being a few years younger the
processing power and chipsets may have been improved?

Has anyone done a sonic comparison between the Transporter and Touch
analogue out and/or digital out? I would be very interested to hear
your experience.

Outside of my Naim fetish, the Transporter is one of the most treasured
pieces of audio equipment. I just wonder if it could be bettered by the
new candidate.

Search on this forum and you'll find many comparisons that have been
made already over the past few months, mostly by Touch beta testers who
also have TPs. Nothing wrong with soliciting more opinions (and actual
test results) now that the Touch is in circulation and there's a larger
pool of users. Just wanted to point out that there are plenty of
comparisons you can read already.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Vs Transporter as a transport

2010-04-26 Thread iPhone

To repeat my other post on the subject. The Transporter has balanced
analog outs. If you will be using these, the TP is the obvious choice.
Now that that is out of the way on to the RCA analog outs. Both in
measured and for my taste (IE my listening) the Transporter still has
an edge here. Is it worth $1500 for the TP, that is very hard to say.
For me it would depend on the rest of ones equipment.

If one is going to be feeding a decent DAC, I say buy the Touch and use
it as a digital transport. Again from what I measured and my listen
tastes the TP is still better then the Touch even feeding a DAC, but
one really has to have great equipment to get ones $1500 out of using
the TP as a digital transport only.

So for me it is not and will not just be a simple straight answer
except when one needs Balanced Analog outs. In all other cases it
depends on ones other components and how much one really has to spend
on a digital transport.

So as just a transport, in most cases just buy a Touch.

Thanks for the insights.

Whatever client I decide to acquire is going to be connected to my
newfangled Naim DAC. If there are substantial differences between the
transporter and the Touch I will opt for the X-porter since, along with
the Naim Nait 2, I consider it to be one of the gems in audio that I
have great affection about.

It's on Amazon but Amazon doesn't ship to Singapore. Anywhere else? Or
do I have to wait until one of the little IT shops here get convinced to
bring it in?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] balance?

2010-04-26 Thread mpower9

May I add another use case for your consideration. I have a set of CDs
that consist of contra dance music played more slowly and simply than
normal so that musicians that play by ear and are not very proficient
can learn the tunes. The tunes have been recorded with the instruments
carrying the tune on one channel and the accompanying instruments on
the other channel. Once you think that you are capable of playing with
a group, you turn off the volume on which ever channel you are playing
and you supply the missing music, providing an opportunity to
experience ensemble playing without terminal embarrassment. (Example:
if I live long enough, I may finally learn one of the tune on my
button accordion. Then I can turn off the fiddle channel and play while
the guitar accompanies me on the other channel.)

It would be handy to be able to do that without having to save the two
channels to separate files.

I do understand that this will not be a priority for the Logitechs. It
is just that with folks working on the balance issues, I thought they
might like to know about this case. As far as I am concerned there is
no rush. My accordion playing is not even up to the slow uncomplicated
level, but it would be a public service to implement a function that
would divert me from ever taking it out in public.
