The noise is still there even if its 100% volume or 0%.
My plan is to get an amp soon and some decent speakers, just wanted to
confirm if the headphone jack was of rather poor quality.
But a temporary solution of a Y plug for my Sennheisers won't work?
3.5mm split to RCA Male, then use the RCA outputs on the Touch.

The RCAs don't have enough current to drive headphones direct. You
either plug the headphones into the headphone jack or use an external
headphone amp. (it won't damage anything to use an adapter on the RCA
jacks, it just won't work very well)

The headphone amp built in to the Touch is certainly not the best money
can buy, but it is pretty good.

The noise you are hearing is just a side effect of being on the same
board with computers and such. It takes a huge amount of design effort
to keep ALL the noise generated by a computer out of the headphone amp.
The power supply feeding the DAC chip is significantly better than the
one feeding the headphone amp so its definitely possible that the RCA
outputs could have lower noise than the headphone out.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

2011-01-21 Thread MrRalph

After some evenings listening to a couple of my favorite albums, I am
still unable to grasp the exact effect of the mods and therefor my
prefered mode (on or off).

The main observation in my setup is that the mods seems to smooths the
overall sound balance by removing some bite and midband presence. This
results in a more relaxed overall presentation where for example the
vocals seem a little un-highlighted than before. On Let's Do It from
Ella and Louis Again this becomes very apparent when Louis' voice
looses some 'bite' and gets more even. However, at the same time I'm
wondering if this all comes at the expense of low level detail
resolution. Will do some more comparing soon with a friend.

But most of all, I thank Klaus for the opportunity to experiment with
the Touch in a way that's easy to apply and revert.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Clock display bug

2011-01-21 Thread JohnSwenson

Do you have an external server or are you using a USB drive connected to
the Touch?

One problem is that the Touch does not have a clock that stays alive
through a power disconnection. Every time it boots up from plugging in
the power it has a garbage time. The firmware notices this situation
and won't display the clock.

The Touch has to connect to an external server of some sort to set its
time. This can either be an SBS running on a computer on your network
or it can be mysqueezebox.com. TinySBS on the Touch is not sufficient
since that would have to use the same (garbage time) clock on the
Touch.

If you have an external SBS its supposed to try and make a connection
on boot up, which should get the time. If you have an external SBS are
you using wake on LAN with it? If so the server may not be up and
running yet when the Touch trys to go get the time.

Just tried another SB touch and a SB3 to check if they had the same
buzzing background noise coming from the headphone jack.
I can confirm they all have it, instantly from powerup even in a room
with minimal electrical interference.

Haven't been able to test the SB radio and Boom, but I think they have
a better quality headphone amp.

I don't think so. I use Sennheinser HD-600. After switching from SB
Radio headphone out, to SB Touch headphone out, I experience less
listening fatigue.

But I know these cans require a proper amp, and I have actually bought
a second-hand battery driven Grado RA-1, which currently sits in a
friend's apartment waiting for me to come visiting and pick it up.
Without a proper 'headphone amp'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headphone_amplifier), you shouldn't
expect too much, especially when you're using relatively power-hungry
headphones like HD-595.

could be wrong but typically rg drops the volume -10dB .
Thanks for the reply, but does the same apply when you one is decoding
from FLAC to PCM on an external server, and streaming PCM to the Touch?
In that particular setting (ie, not the standard case of decoding FLAC
on the Touch) I would think that any RG adjustment would be applied at
the server, thus leaving the Touch's volume at whatever its nominal
setting is. But of course I could be wrong.

I'm running the same setup as you do, with the only difference that all
my FLACS are at compression level 0.

Therefore I can tell you that loading the album art first would not
help. I don't save or display any album art (if it's includes I even
delete it), but I have the same stuttering problem. The only thing that
helped in my case was switching to MySQL instead of using SQlite. With
MySQL there was no stuttering/rebuffering at all. But it has a
downside. MySQL is not reliable when scanning the music-folder and it
is much slower than SQlite.

Therefore I returned to SQlite and live with the stuttering at the
beginning of the first track.

This shows that the stuttering is most probably not a buffer-problem,
but rather a database handling problem. If MySQL were as reliable and
fast as SQlite I'd use it because it's nice to play songs without
rebuffering, but the MySQL seems to be bad in combination with the
Touch.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

2011-01-21 Thread Mnyb

Another way to put is that RG tags are there so you not have to alter
the sound of the file.

This then implies that the RG tag is an order to the playback system
to play at this level , the whole thing hinges around some kind of
nominal level(s) .

So you can turn it on and of as needed if you have such tags, example
if you have a party and want background music just turn on the gain
adjustments for the acassion, and then turn them off when it's time for
a hifi OCD session ;)

That said it does exist some very destructive ways to do volume
normalisation by actually alter the files, I think it is somewhat
popular for mp3 and to use with players that does not have RG making
all your files play at the same level by compressing them yourself :-/
this is bad.

Yes, of course, but that was not the question. What I wanted to know is
_where_ this is implemented -- on the server or on the player --
particularly for server side decoding. This is now clear to me.

I can't speak to the consensus, but plenty of smart people on this
forum that know a lot more than me don't think that decoding on the
server side vs Touch matters to the ultimate sound quality. Try it
both ways and see what you think. It's just a couple of settings in SbS
Settings File Types. But beware of the placebo effectif you can,
get someone else to make the changes and listen a bit both ways so you
are doing a blind test. For me, there is absolutely no difference in
either my TOUCH or my TRANSPORTER.

2011-01-21 Thread metamurph

I have my music on NAS device, most of it managed by itunes in
z:/music/itunes/music but I also have music in z:/music/hdtracks
I have cleaned everything, done rebuild, etc. and most of my music is
there but some of it isn't. I can go in the Squeezebox into the music
directory to the itune directory, it shows me the artist folder, select
that and I see the album folder, then nothing. I haven't figured out
any specific pattern to the stuff that is in there vs. the stuff that
isn'twell I haven't looked enough into this but I think it is the
AAC files ie .m4p files that don't show the .m4a files do. So in some
directories I have multiple albums from the artist some of them show,
some don't and in those cases that seems to be the difference.

I'm not sure about consensus either. However, *my subjective
impression* is that decoding on the server yields marginally clearer
sound. As has been pointed out, it's easy to try. No SW mod necessary!

But don't just listen repeatedly to the same brief sound clip. Try it
either way for a couple of days at the time. (I know, it's not quite
A/B, but if you listen repeatedly to the same brief clip, you will very
likely find no difference).

However, the full benefit of soundcheck's mods is only likely to be had
when most of the SW mods are implemented. I followed pretty much his
suggestions, except that I'm still on wireless and, *again
subjectively*, am very satisfied with the result.

I'm not saying you believe this, but just for others' info, a blind A/B
comparison does NOT have to be listening to short snips of music over a
short time. One can listen for A for days and then B for days (or
weeks!). The key of course is that the listener doesn't know which is A
and which is B. Just take some notes about your listening experiences.
Then AFTER THE FACT, compare those notes/times/days with the
information about the setup on those days/times.

Quite true!

I just think that, to the extent that there are differences to be
perceived, they are more likely to become apparent when listening to a
variety of recordings over extended periods.

Sometimes judgments are formed based solely on repeated listening to
brief musical segments, whether blind or not. Yet, this is not how we
ordinarily listen to music. While this is not necessarily invalid when
the differences are gross, it seems to me questionable when the
differences are of the kind of musical refinement that soundcheck's
mods attempt to accomplish.

On the SB Touch there are three logical devices, a controller, a
player and a server. The server is the only one that sees files
(wherever they are) the player just talks to a server, it never sees
files directly, and the controller part just talks to servers as well.

So the player part can never look at the USB port, all it can do is
be pointed at a server. If you have a server running on a separate
computer you can switch the Touch between the builtin server, the
external server and mysqueezebox.com.

Even if you connect the player to the builtin server it will still TRY
and make a connection to a network (wired or wireless) so that you have
the option of connecting to mysqueezebox.com for network streams. Its
not required for use of the builtin server but it at least try's to
make the connection so its up and running if you want to use it.

On my windows 7 desktop it can see the squeezeboxtouch under my

 Thanks!

The touch only works with the workgroup name WORKGROUP. If you have
changed the workgroup name on your computer it won't be able to connect
via the normal windows networking.

There IS a way to do it, even if the workgroup is different: first get
the IP address of the Touch (settings-advanced-diagnostics, scroll
down to the IP Adressess field). Then open My Computer and make sure
you have an address bar. If not bring one up (view-toolbars-address).
Type the following into the address bar:

\\IPaddress

For me that is:

\\192.168.1.103

Note those are two back slashes NOT forward slashes.

This should then bring up a box asking for the username and password.
The default is root and 1234.

This should then pop up the shared directories.

I hope that works.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Problem with buffering

2011-01-21 Thread Mnyb

latest 7.6 beta and 7.5.3 beta has a fix where it detects a bad
database and optimizes it .
This was the outcome of the one of the bugs lately where it was
discovered thats such optimizing was not always done after a scan
(which is necessary for performance).
Also it is fixed to make sure that database optimizing ( MySQL optimize
or SQlite analyze) always takes place after a scan.

This makes dB queries like 10 to 100 times faster if your dB was in a
really bad shape :-/ like mine was after 5-6 months without this dB
maintenance.

Also 7.6 uses SQlite for database and 7.5.x uses MySQL

SQlite is said to be faster on smaller ( slower) computers, great for
low power servers .

MySQL is regarded as better by some people that that knows such stuff
(not me, I know 0 about databases) but in Squeezebox context if you
followed the the forum the latest years.
MySQl has the ability to provoke many AV softwares and and other
security software to do things they should not.

This is not Logitechs or MySQL fault that many AV softwares thinks that
one of the worlds most used dB application is a virus ?

But it always end up at Logitechs helpdesk as failed scans, so SQlite
it is for 7.6 .

But to pass this database bug upgrading to latest 7.5.3 can be enough.

7.6 can be better for some but as it is the most unstable beta you can
enjoy all the latest functions but also new bugs. And it can seize to
function completely. 7.6 seems to be most buggy on windows lately.

7.6 is surprisingly stable on my small linux server ?

And upgrades is done often .
It's no point staying on an old 7.6 somewhere so you have to upgrade
quit often. And you will realize that there are often Touch Controller
and radio upgrades pushed out if you are running 7.6 several times
every week.

See griffins response in post 17

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=602152postcount=17

It is not that simple, but it explains your 20bit status, and it should
not report 24/96 all the time but also 24/44.1 and 24/48 and 24/88.2 .
There seems to be no real way to actually indicate bit depth with 100%
accuracy and it actually does not say anything about the signal content
.
I was unaware of that fact exposed in Griffin's post (thanks something
new learned).

Then it gets clear to me why many dac and processor simply indicate
sample rate and not bits

I'm convinced that it actually is 24bit's we get for the reason that
many people have indicated that they measured that it is soo and some
experiments I've trying to get squeezeplay to output 24bit to my
soundcard in ubuntu :-/ I see that the server indeed sends 24LE or what
it was .

Also the touch has a 24bit alsa process running all the time.

But it would be nice to have the bug fixed it would not fix all cases
but increase the likelihood of correct indication.

And to bake our noodles further nobody will hear the difference between
20 and 24 bits the signal may be 24 bit but most DAC's and ADC's is
practically 20bit due to the S/N ratio even if they are equipped with
so called 24bit chips :) so is it really 24bit I'm hearing now...
;)
