[SlimDevices: Touch] Will Neil Young's PONO be the next SBT

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Will Neil Young's PONO be the next SBT

2014-03-16 Thread tmauceri

I'm always on the look out for the next thing. I love my SBT/VBA combo
but worry about obselesnce or my SBT dying. Everytime I read a review
about a digital streamer/music server I'm thinking this is the answer,
but then I see the expensive price tag.
Maybe later versions of the PONO will stream and have a USB or digital
out for our DACS. I read an interview where Neil stated there would be
an audiophile version of the PONO in the future. When I first heard
about the PONO last year there wasn't any info about formats etc. I
didn't believe it would ever come to fruition, it seems it may now. I'm
still wondering about the Olive One also.

Why not try the optical or coax out of the SBT into the NAD which

[SlimDevices: Touch] SBT can't find DHCP address message

I fixed the problem or it fixed itself. On the VBA GUI under Network
Config you can select DHCP or Static IP. Neither was selected, so I
selected DHCP and hit submit. After an additional reboot and 10 min
everything was fine.

[SlimDevices: Touch] A timeless Question

Here on the east coast we turned our clocks ahead Sunday morning for
daylight savings time. I expected my SBT clock to be an one hour

standard time. I wanted to turn the clock back but can't figure out how
to. I changed the time zone to central standard and that worked, but is
there away to set the actual time. I am feeling very dumb.

Similarly, if the Touch is connected to mysb.com, it should get the

would expect that the Touch's embedded Linux system would update the

EDIT: If you are running a local LMS, what operating system?Running LMS on a

 Good idea.

My collection is in flac. That's why I want to go with the touch. The
Cd changer is in the trunk. I was thinking of switching that out for
the server. If my head unit would play flacs from hard drives, I
wouldn't be thinking about this. I considered a mobridge product with
an ipod that would let my head unit control the music. However, I don't
think I can get everything to fit on an ipod unless I tried to hack it
to run off a larger hard drvie. Other thoughts were to buy a used
phatbox and hack it to accept a larger hard drive.

The touch seems ideally suited, except for the challenge of finding a
good place to mount it.You could use a 64G iPod Touch running the FLAC
 Player App. That would
let you have about 190 FLAC encoded CDs at your disposal. You could
then use iTunes as a file sharer to change the music on the iPod Touch.
I use a 64G iPhone 4S with the FLAC Player App and a Nuforce Headphone
Amp for my portable rig. I just copy FLAC files from my Vortexbox to my
phone when I want something new to listen to. When the phone's memory
gets full I delete what I havn't been listening to lately. This is a
simple solution, it's better to have a 190 CDs at your fingertips than
6 or 10 in the trunk.

The key here for me is simplicity and reliability. This is one of the

 such.

Do you have any more information on why the internal server is
unreliable? I've had a flick through this forum and noticed some
comments about FLAC playback is of higher quality when performed on the
server rather than the SBT - do you know if there's anything scientific
 to back this up?

I found my problem, it turns out that most of my compilations did not
have a compilation tag. This is an extended tag that is not displayed
in the main window of MP3Tag. I examined the comps that were displayed
under Various Artists and some that were not. The difference was a
compilation tag with a value of 1. I then spent 2 hours adding a
compilation tag to about 70 albums, did a clear and rescan and all the
comps showed up under Various Artists. Backed up the VBA and all is
well again. I think that 7.6.1 is a bit more fickle with respect to
tags than 7.6.0.

[SlimDevices: Touch] 7.6.1 issue with tags.

2011-08-30 Thread tmauceri

I have a SBT with VBA. I have set up my database so that all
compilations are listed as Various Artists. I have close to 100 of
these ripped in FLAC(mostly by the VBA some by EAC) and edited with
MP3Tag, when editing was needed to conform with my database. Prior to
my 7.6.1 upgade all of these titles showed up under Various Artists,
after the upgrade about 1/3 of them show up under Various Artists. If
I sort by albums they are all there, but not associated with any Artist.
Artwork is all there also. I looked at a few of the no shows with MP3Tag
and the Artist is listed as Various Artist, so the Artist tag looks
fine. I Know 7.6.1 is more tag sensitive than previous versions but I
can't determine what I need to fix. I have done many clear and
rescans, it doesn't fix the problem. I have noticed that before the
upgrade a clear and rescan took about 20 min. After the upgade it is
more like 5 min. I was wondering if the SBT isn't doing a full Clear
and rescan??? Any input to my dilema would be greatly appeciated.
Thanks!!!

 my music library is:

 /storage/music/flac

I've never done anything regarding giving permissions. It has all just
worked... My VBA was purchased from Andrew all setup and has internal
drives for all the files (nothing special like mounting external USB
drives, etc.)My system looks the same. But I had to create the platlist folder
myself, did you? My VBA is a stock 1T drive.I have a WD 1T USB drive
for back-up, but I don't think thats the problem. I use the VBA GUI to
initiate a back-up. When I try to save a playlist via the SBS GUI, I
get a cannot save message for a sec. I thought the playlist location
should be Storage/file/music/playlist, but since yours isn't and it
works I must be wrong. Is there a way to forward this issue to Andrew
(who I assume is the qualified expert.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Playlists

2011-06-12 Thread tmauceri

I have had a SBT with a VBA for almost six months and would say I am
very happy. I use iPeng running on an iPad and iPhone for control and
almost never touch the SBT. I can create a Playlist and save it with
iPeng with no problem. The problem is the next day the Playlist is
gone. I do an automated Clear and Rescan at 3:00 AM everyday. So my
questions are, does the clear and rescan delete my playlists. Do I need
to set something in the settings of the SBS? What am I missing?

I created a folder called playlist and put it in the files folder on

iPeng. But when I go into the playlist folder the playlist is not there.

So it is definitely a permissions issue.

Have you tried specifying the folder that garym suggested in your SBS
settings (\\vortexbox\files\music)? That would seem to be where VBA has
 set the appropriate permissions.

I have done this done this but it says storage/playlist. Before i added
a playlist folder in vortexbox/files, there was no playlist folder and
if you browsed you did not see it. After I added it, when you browse

storage/playlist. Not Vortexbox/files/playlist.

I posted on VB forum, no response yet. I have a theory tell me what you
think. When I access the VBA directly it opens to 4 files. they are
files, movies, music and pictures. We know if I want to edit any Flac
files you must go the VBA/files/music/flac route. If you try to acces
through the VBA/music/flac route you can not edit files they are
protected. I believe the SBS accesses the music via the music/flac
route which is why the flac files can't be compromised since they are
protected. I created a playlist folder, VBA/file/music/playlist,
playlist folder shows up in either the VBA/file/music/playlist or
VBA/music/playlist. you cannot create a folder via the VBA/music route.
in the SBS settings, playlists folder you cannot browes to the
VBA/files/music/playlist only the VBA/music/playlist since this is
protected the SBT cannot save playlist.

expand your question. In my case, all my CDs that are compilations
(each track is NOT the same artist) have a COMPILATION tag and the
field value is 1 (without the quotes). You can add this with mp3tag.
Then in SbS, I tell it in settings under my music tab to group
compilations together and also on that page I tell it to call these
groupings Compilations instead of the default of various artists.
This way, in my ARTIST listings I don't see the hundreds of artists
that only appear in compilations. Instead I have a list of
compilations under artists and if I click on this, I see a listing of
all the compilation albums (soundtracks, etc.).

But search this forum on the keyword compilation and you'll see lots
of very detailed discussion. For example, Mr. Sinatra has lots of
useful posts. I get what you are saying. I am putting comps under various
 artists.
This works if the individual artist is listed in the song title and the
artist is listed as Various Artist. If it isn't I edit it that way. A
lot of work, but I have had only 2 or 3 comps out 50 or more. I will
try the recommendation of adding the album artist as Various Artist.

no, the COMPILATION field is just that, another field within a TAG. The
fields are things like ARTIST, ALBUM, GENRE, etc. The COMPILATION field
is just a simple one that is a flag. If it exists and has the value of
1, this just tells some player (itunes, SbS, etc.) that the track is
part of a compilation. So the player knows that the ALBUM, even though
it has different artist on the tracks in the album, is in fact an
Album that should be treated as one Album rather than 15 different
albums with 15 different artists with only 1 song each.

I would like to understand this better. Is it that each song contains
embedded data called a Tag which contains multiple fields. I thought
that each field was a seperate tag and that they were associated with
the CD as a whole. When my VBA rips a CD it creates 3 extra files
besides the flac files. Two are the album art (cover and folder). The
third and I am blanking on the extension, I thought contained the CD
data or contained the tags.

I have ripped over 900 CDs over the last 6 weeks and have been very
happy with the the tags returned via the VBA. CDs that were labeled
incorrectly or did not conform to my filing system were edited with
MP3Tag. Rock, jazz, etc filed under the artists name, classical under
the composers name and compilations under various artists. A simple
system that works for me. I have 2 CDs that are giving me a problem, a
Buddy Holly best of and a 2 disk Gram Parsons set. The disks show up in
2 places on the SBT and on iPeng. They show under the artists name and
under various artists. I have examined both using MP3Tag and there is
nowhere a reference to various artist. Are there hidden tags that I am
not aware of?

artist tags to both CDs (i.e., Gram Parsons as album artist on all
those tracks and Buddy Holly as album artist on the other CD tracks.
Then do a clear and rescan. p.s. I'm a big Gram Parsons (and Buddy

I'm pretty sure the Buddy Holly CD is the same artist I will add Album
Artist though. I've noticed this is usually blank when I review a CD on
MP3Tag. Does Album Artist superceed artist? The Gram Parsons set listed
different Artists, Submarine Band, Byrds, Buritto Bros, which I had
edited to Gram Parsons. I then added the various bands to the song
titles for documentation. I'll add Gram Parsons to Album Artist.

view is put an album artist on every track (even though for most CDs
the album artist will equal the track artist). Another view is to only
include album artist on CDs where there are different track artists
(this could be a true compilation (i.e., a movie soundtrack or
greatest hits of 1969 sort of thing) or even a CD that has one or
more tracks with multiple artists. I lean toward the latter approach. I
also add a COMPILATION =1 tag for true compilations.

Also, you don't have to remove the track artist info at all as you've
done for Parsons. You can leave the track artist (which is just the
ARTIST field) with the different artists (e.g., Gram Parsons, Flying
Burritto Brothers, International Submarine Band, etc.) and still make
the ALBUM ARTIST tag for all these tracks as Gram Parsons. Make sense?I don't
 understand the compilation=1.

I've been using DVD Audio Extractor to rip flac files in there native

of the forums, this one or AVS, That the SBT will play back DD or DTS
files in 5.1 as long as they are decoded and ripped to flac. These
files would be 24/48. I know optical or coax out can support this
resolution, but hadn't read anything about the SBT being able to play
multi-channel media. So I ripped Donald Fagen's The Nightfly in 5.1
24/48 and tried playing it through the SBT, but all I got was stereo in
and out. Will the SBT support 5.1 as long as the Rez doesn't exceed
24/48 or 5.1 at all?

or clear library and rescan everything. Clear and Rescan everything
seems to always work, but takes a few minutes. New and changed music
works sometimes. and sometimes the VBA updating the server after

Success, The SB/VBA updated my edits and got the cover art. Thanks to
everyone who has helped me with this endeavor, I will be back with more
questions I'm sure.

So you solved your initial problem of not being able to save files?

after you edited the files and saved the changes, did you go into SbS
webGUI Settings and then do a rescan (either look for new and changed
or clear and rescan)? You have to do this step before the SB player
(touch) will pick up the changes.

Thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Newbie with Questions for the Experts

2010-12-26 Thread tmauceri

Im back already. A few days ago I asked about FLAC and sampling rates
and the general opinion was to rip in 44.1. My AVR tells me the FLAC
files are in 44.1, so all is good. If I wanted to rip in say 88.2 can
the VBA do this? If so, how do I change the defaults? Also can I change
the compression? I know 5 seems to be the compression of choice. But how
would I change the compression if I wanted to?

you can cahnge from 44.1 to 88.2, but this is generally a bad idea at
best and can screw things up at worst. If the CD is 44.1, ripping it at
88.2 doesn't somehow add something that wasn't there.

Regarding compression, this just has to do with size of the FLAC
file. Many folks will tell you that the usual default of 5
compression is the best compromise between size of file (small) and the
effort the decoder has to put out to decode the FLAC file. I personally
use 5 on all my FLAC rips. I use dbpa to rip (even though I have a
VBA) so not sure where the setting is on VBA. But must be a place to
change compression to be somewhere between 0 and 8.

Thanks Gary. I was looking at the music folders on the VBA and noticed
in each CD folder there are the FLAC, M3U, Cover and Folder files.
Cover and Folder have the album art. What is the difference? What is
the M3U file? And the last Question, why would there be art in both the
Cover and folder files that doesn't show up on the SB display?

Ther is absolutelyno point in ripping CD as 88.2 won't do anything that
the DAC is not alredy doing for you , the DAC chip is most certainly
oversampling and a squeezebox also pads 16 bit to 24 bit .

Do you want use the digital output to something that does not
 oversample ?
I'm not trying to rip in 88.2, just trying to learn.

m3u is a playlist file. Album artwork is typically stored as a .jpg file

folder.jpg. I'm surprised this gives you both files. Seems like you
should have one or the other. Regarding showing up in SbS, have you
done a complete clear and rescan of your music library in the SbS
webGUI? It seems this is required to pick up artwork changes. If that
doesn't work, as a test, remove the cover.jpg file from one of the
directories, leaving only the folder.jpg file and then clear and
rescan. I wonder if having two copies of the art file is confusing
 SbS.

All the Album folders have both Cover and folder files. Most of the
albums show artwork on the SB. For instance 3 Beatle CDs have both
cover and folder files, but the art work only shows on the SB for 2 of
them.

Going to the SBS webGUI did the trick. I now have all the art work.
Thanks again Gary. Now to update my Harmony One for this new gear.

Great. Enjoy. Lots of little things to learn about all this, but sounds
like you're on your way. Main thing is to have good tags on your files.
This forum is helpful, and don't forget about the search function. When
you get to issues like how does SbS deal with compilation CDs the
search function will be your friend!

I've delt with compilations on iTunes, so I know what to expect. If I
want to delete, say all the soundtrack filler from Yellow Submarine,
can I go to the VBA files folder delete them and then edit the track
numbers with mp3tag.

Set everything up, no problems. Decided to rip my Beatles catalogue,
ripped Rubber Soul no Problem but no artwork. Ripped Revolver, no
problem got the artwork. Ripped Help, problem, came back with a tittle
of Best of the Beatles and it's associated artwork. The song tittles
were all wrong also. How do I fix this with the VBA. Also how do you
set the sampling rate when ripping in FLAC? I expected to have a
problem with tags somewhere down the line, but not with the Beatles. I
can access the VBA through a browser, so I've got that far.

mp3tag is a very useful tag editing program (and does FLAC too). Best
bet is to edit your tags with this program. I'm sure there are some tag
programs that run on the VBA too, but this is just as easy (or easier)
and you can directly access your files stored on the VBA from any other
computer on your network. I use mp3tag on my laptop, but the files are
 on my VBA.

How do I access the FLAC files from my laptop or can this be done from
the web interface?

I downloaded mp3tag and can access the music files on the VBA. When I
try to save my edits the program says cannot be opened for writing.
What do I do to unlock the music files?

Since the VBA doesn't have a remote, should I leave it running 24/7 or
do I have to turn it on manually? While I'm here I have FLAC question
also. When I rip a standard CD 44/16 in FLAC. Does it play back as
44/16 or at some higher rate or is the resolution adjustable? I realize
you can't get more out of a standard CD but if you can rip to say 96/24
does that have an effect on playback?

Found the Vortexbox UK website, it pretty much answered all my questions

do have though, is there a forum on this site or AVS that pertains to
people using the SB Touch with VBA. I did a search and couldn't find
one.
