Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How can I set date/time on the Touch ?

2012-01-23 Thread thunder3dan

My touch keeps losing time when using the internal touch server. This
affect all devices connected to the touch. So when using a squeezebox
radio as an alarm the alarm becomes unreliable and begins triggering
the annoying backup alarm. As a temporary solution I have connected
the touch directly to mysqueezebox.com, but left the internal
squeezebox server running on the touch while still connecting my
squeezebox radio to the touch. This allows me to access to my local
files while still getting the correct time.

Any update on this?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How can I set date/time on the Touch ?

2011-05-02 Thread nicolas75

Connecting to TinySBS with ssh requires another computer.

The point of using TinySBS is not to use another computer.
e.g. : you simply do not have another computer in the house where the
Touch is located.

Setting time with ssh is tedious, and out of question for a normal user
who has probably never heard about ssh.
If you have internet connection, you can simply switch temporarily to
myqueezebox.com to update time.
This is what I did, and this is much easier than doing it with ssh,
even if you are a geek.

I cannot find any sensible reason not to provide a manual setting of
the time in the "settings" menu.
No regular user can understand why this feature is missing.
Of course, there is no problem to automatically retrieve time if a PC
or internet connection is available.

I noticed the time being wrong in the following situation :
I didn't use the Touch for about a week (but it was connected to a
router with internet connection alive)
After a week, I listened to the radio from a stream stored in
mysqueezebox.com favourites, but I choose it from TinySBS favourites.
I don't use direct connection to mysqueezebox.com because it is not
reliable enough, so I keep a usb stick connected to the Touch and use
TinySBS.
It is only the next day that I notices my Touch clock was 4 minutes
late, comparing with others clocks in the house.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How can I set date/time on the Touch ?

2011-05-02 Thread JohnSwenson

This has been discussed in depth in the following thread:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79894&highlight=time

Look at post #7 for the command needed to actually set the time. This
does have to be done by logging into the Touch with SSH from another
computer.

The RTC clock on the Touch does have a much higher accuracy than the
software clock, but none of the functions use it directly, a way would
have to be found to periodically copy the RTC time to the system time.

Note that one of the developers mentioned that TinySBS was supposed to
be trying to make connection to MySB.com periodically and updating its
time. From your posts it sounds like you are connected to the internet
so this SHOULD be happening, obviously its not, so we need to look into
why this connection is not happening.

Do you always have a connection to the internet or is it only once in a
while? If it's only occasionally that an internet connection exists then
that could be part of the problem, if the connection doesn't exist when
TinySBS tries to connect to MySB.com then it won't get the time.

I am quite sure that many normal users are happy to have the time of
day displayed on the Touch screen.
Especially those using the alarm feature.
I saw several requests concerning time display format, so I guess those
people are interested in time display feature.

As far as I am concerned, I would certainly not ask TinySBS to update
time via internet.
I would even consider this as a problem, since I consider that TinySBS
should behave normally without internet connection (I read several
posts showing that I am not alone thinking this way).

I am quite sure that most normal users can hardly understand why it is
not possible to manually set date/time on the Touch.
This is such a basic feature, that I thought I missed it.

Thanks to point out http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17164
I think this is indeed a real problem, and there is no workaround if
you move your Touch to a place where you have no PC and no internet
access

Fyi, the slow Touch clock is a known issue
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17164). I didn't see any
bug reports for Touch not routinely updating time via internet, nor any
enhancement requests for adding time and date to the settings menu.

I must confess that in my opinion, it was quite obvious than
"How can I set date/time on the Touch?"
implicitly means "manually" ...

My apologies if this was not clear enough.
I hope it is clearer now :-)

I specified that I was looking for an "option" to perform this action.
To avoid any misunderstanding, I'll add that I was expecting to find
this "manual" option in the "settings" menu of the Touch "screen
interface".

I guess that's the location where most non geek people would look for
such a feature :-)

Serious indeed. I guess it's my mistake for trying to answer your
question ("How can I set date/time on the Touch?"), which I did. If you
want to discuss "Why can't I input time manually on the Touch?" or "Why
doesn't TinySBS update via the internet?" then that's different.
Perfectly valid questions, but nothing that holds my interest.

No, this is a mere basic function.
Especially for a device with an alarm function.
Nothing to do with 3rd party applet, or ssh connect, or anything like
that.
This would be the "geek" way.
By the way, how would you access ssh commands with Touch + USB stick
and nothing else, no PC ???

When I want to set time in Windows 7, I don't download a 3rd party
applet.
I have an electronic weather station with alarm.
It automatically get its time from a radio connection, but if I want to
set time manually, I don't use ssh or a 3rd party applet ...
Let's be serious, please ...

Sorry for your kitchen alarm.
I have a toy watch I bought from a kid, for less than one dollar, on a
boat in western africa.
It doesn't lose 30 seconds in a month ...

Actually I did not really accessed directly mysqueezebox.com

I just used favourites in TinySBS, which includes mysqueezebox.com
favourites.

I don't have my Touch in front of me to check, but I expect the Touch's
version of busybox includes the 'date' command. If so, then you could
ssh into the Touch and set the internal clock that way.

Adding a date and time setting to the Touch ui probably wouldn't be
that onerous, and may be a good candidate for a (3rd party) applet. I
imagine that the decision to omit it was based on an assumption that
most users of a network music player would have an external server or
at least a working internet connection to reach mysb.com for time
checks. Or some other way to tell the time. You may be looking at a
corner case.

I agree that losing 4 minutes in 2 weeks is a lot for an electronic
device. I am annoyed that our new kitchen range (which cost 10x the
Touch) loses 3 minutes a week. But like the Touch, I think it's great
for its primary purpose (cooking).

Well, the problem is with TinySBS.

My Touch has been using TinySBS from about 2 weeks (mysqueezebox.com is
definitly not reliable in Europe).
Touch time went about 4 minutes late in less than 2 weeks ...
Note that it has been connected to my router all the time, so internet
access is available, and mysqueezebox.com favourites too.

I had to connect to mysqueezebox.com or to my regular SBS to set it
right.

Anyway how do you set time when you have no internet access, no SBS
server running ?
Setting timezone is useless.

I don't see the point not too provide data/time settings from Touch
interface.
Any device or Operating System with time feature provides such a basic
function, just in case automatic time settings doesn't work fine.

Like other SBs, the Touch generally gets its time from the server. So if
running regular SBS, make sure your server has the correct time. If
running TinySBS, then it will depend on a connection to the internet,
possibly through mysb.com, though I'm not sure about that. You can set
the timezone on the Touch via Settings > Advanced > Timezone.
