Hi gents.

I just forked this thread over to 'soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0'
since I found this thread title kind of misleading. ;)

I btw added chapter 1.8 to the blog making some comments about
upgrades.

As requested, I added a little screenshot to the blog to hopefully make
the installation a bit easier.

I also revised a bit the flac and other formats decoding instructions.

Dear scooot.

How comes that you figured out I've been doing extensive messing on
the Touch. Please let me know what makes you think so.

I'd strongly recommend that you better stay away from my Toolbox with
this kind of attitude. Just press the black button on the back - it's
that easy.

Otherwise have look at my programs - these are just scripts.

You can easily figure out on your own about what mess you're actually
talking about and how an upgrade process would be affected by those.

Or you might want to read my blog first. There you'll find what

I have enabled PCM stream, disabled analog outputs, and enabled screen
off. Each step has had a positive effect and, as you pointed out, these
effects are cumulative. I was very skeptical that turning off the screen

The total effect, in my system, is absolutely *not* subtle. Your mods

of course, the wrong directory. I finally figured out that I needed to
go up a directory, put the file there and, voila, all was good from

When you're completely unfamiliar with this stuff, nothing is obvious.
Sometimes, when you work with something every day or know it inside and

Thx for the feedback. It's obviously not that easy.I never stepped over

What I'm gonna do is I'm packaging the toolbox with absolute path
assigned.

Now it's done according to standard: the files got a relative path
assigned. When unpacking at the wrong place a filetree will be built
from your actual location. Consequence: All the files end up at the
wrong place. That's why some people get in trouble.

If done absolute you can unpack them wherever you want.
They'll always end up at the right spot and you guys save
one step.

Some background:
Packages are packed the relative way because it is more secure. If done
absolute, it can bear a security risk. Criminal minds could put nice

Everybody with scripting/programming skills can see what I'm doing.
That should put all of you on the save side. ;)

Thanks. I still can't see why reducing the buffer size would improve
audio. The CPU utilisation is unchanged. Memory is not being paged
out/page faulting.

If anything, the system will be under more strain/risk trying to manage
a buffer that is on the edge... ?

Dear Phil.

Just try it - I made it very easy for you and others to change values.

You can do simple ABX testing on any of the mods I present. And if you
can't hear or measure it, that doesn't mean that it does not exists

It just means that you can't hear or measure it under your conditions,
which are different from the rest of the world. Not any system is the
same.
And measurements are an art on its own. I don't believe in any of those
measurements out there.

You can turn all on and off with one command. I play completely open
here.

Yep. I do even claim that turning off a channel in asound.conf makes a
difference.

As I wrote on the BLOG: Less is more - that's the philosophy behind all
my
mods. It's that simple.

You might want to look at the alsa pages how a buffer works and gets
managed. Don't forget to look up the code and kernel scheduler, timers
drivers, interrupt handler, power supplies asf. to figure it out.
Good luck. You'll need it.

I just stopped speculating about what's causing this or that. You see
that the discussions I started earlier ( see Mnyb link) won't lead
anywhere.
I just try an idea and see if it works. I can tell you I tried plenty
of other measures which went into the wrong direction.

People like Gordon Rankin (Wavelength Audio) are not able to
nail those effects down, even though he got the best analyzers and
equipment at hand.
At least people like him and Charles Hansen (Ayre) meanwhile admit
that those effects exists. Hansen even wrote his own player. (And all
thhis sudden honesty took a lot of time to show up. (Due to obvious
business related reasons. If all DACs suffer you admit it openly. If
not the effect
doesn't exist because you can't measure it - pretty simple marketing
strategy to protect your product.)
Even those guys enjoy software like Amarra or similar, because it just
makes computer based audio sounding better.

Again good luck on your quest. I gotta run. Need to enjoy my small
buffers settings. :D
Beside that I need to figure out new mods. Listening to great sound
challenges my creativity to go after more. :D

Cheers

Klaus,

Very big thank you for making these mods open to us all.

I found your instructions just fine, although i'm probably a little
more tech savy with this kind of things than a lot of people here.

What I didn't expect was quite how big the impact your changes have
had. I played around with some of your earlier mods and found the
effect fairly minimal. Now the changes to SQ are very obvious even
playing fairly low bandwidth streaming radio and MP3s. I guess that
switching off the wireless and the screen is probably contributing
significantly.

Thanks again.

All modification are of cumulative nature. Some of them got more some
less impact. That's right. ;)
That's why I'm saying if you can't run wired or with screen off - don't
expect huge jumps.
Many people asked for WLAN on/off though. I wasn't really happy with
this request. However I still built that feature in. Even small
improvements can be enjoyable.

Klaus:

Many thanks for making your mods available to all! (I've made a
donation).

Unfortunately, at this time I'm unable to turn off the WLAN, but I
enabled the PCM stream to the Touch and turned off the analog outputs.
Of these two, the PCM seemed to have the greatest impact. I had to set
the buffer size to 4000. I'll try the screen-off next.

What I hear is a greater overall clarity. On well recorded music, I
hear better definition of instrument lines and voices and,
surprisingly, tighter and more tuneful bass. Well worth the effort,
which you made fairly simple for those, like me, with limited IT
skills.

Again, thanks a lot, and keep at it!

Guido F.

2011-01-11 Thread sckramer

Hello Klaus,

Nice work on these mods! Music gets even more relaxed with them flipped
on!
Do you think it could be possible to turn the screen driver back on
without a reboot? and possibly tie that to a remote control button
press? (basically one of the screen savers you can cycle through) that
would be awesome!

Thanks for the great work!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch mods from Soundcheck no more available

2011-01-11 Thread Paa

Hi all,

I've been testing the mods since sunday and they are very impressive.
More clean sound and treble extension (which I cannot explain). 24/96
works with no problems at all.

The wifi has significant negative impact. My suggestion is to use two
routers in bridge mode. I use two airport extreme with good results. So
the problem is not the wifi per se but having wifi working inside the
SBT.

My system: musical Fidelity v-dac, kt88 diy amp, triangle comete es
speakers, nordost red dawn cables.

2011-01-11 Thread welom

Hello Klaus!

thank you for making the mods available!

Just wanted to share my experience with the Alsa buffer-setting: Had to
change the suggested 3600us to 8000us (I'm not sure about 7000us, but
6000us definitely did not work in my setup).

Does this probably have to do with the fact, that I'm using WLAN
instead of ethernet?

Thanks,

Arno

HI all,

Installed the Mod2.0 last night, I have to increase the buffer to 4800
to totally eliminate the pop.

The 2.0 is much more easy to install even though I'm new to linux.

The big step improvement over the 1.0, I hear better bass definition
clearer high.

Highly recommended.

Thanks applause to Klaus

In the terminal window, I entered the command 'tar xvf

I watched the unpacking and distribution appear.

Then, still in the terminal window I entered 'ttinit' and got the
following messages:

COMMAND 'PWD' FAILED WITH RETURN CODE 0 AND ERROR MESSAGE

and

COMMAND 'TTINIT' FAILED WITH RETURN CODE 127 AND ERROR MESSAGE

Any charitable soul that can point out what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

More people seem to have a problem to copy a file from a to b.

I assumed this would not be any different or more complex then
using MS explorer.

Totally lost!?!? Come on, you must be kidding.

When logging in to the Touch you login as user root.
That's why you end up in the /root directory first.
From here we need to go one directory level up -- you just
doubleclick on the single folder icon on the right hand side of that
WinScp
file browser.
Then you'll see several directories showing up e.g /usr /sys /var /tmp
asf. on the right side. Now you're in the / directory. Almost done.
:D

Now you change directory on the PC side (left) of that WinSCP browser
to pick your downloaded toolbox file where you downloaded it and just
drop it into the right side. You're done.

Now you just continue to run all the commands as described from 1.2.5
onwards.

Best: copy/paste those listed commands.

For me, it was moving up one in the root directory that wasn't clear.
I easily copied the file over to the directory that came up on the
right side of the browser window (and you have to remember to set the
browser window to Commander mode, otherwise you only get one pane) but
that was, of course, the wrong directory. I finally figured out that I
needed to go up a directory, put the file there and, voila, all was
good from there on.

When you're completely unfamiliar with this stuff, nothing is obvious.
Sometimes, when you work with something every day or know it inside and
out, it's really hard to see that something that is completely
automatic for you could really befuddle somebody seeing it for the
first time. That's why a good technical/manual writer is worth their
weight in goldcan forestall hundreds/thousands of tech support
emails, calls, name-calling, etc. ;). You did great,
Soundcheck...just needed a few tweaks for us noobslike anything
else does.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch mods from Soundcheck no more available

2011-01-10 Thread rgro

Sounds like you finally got it knocked! Congrats. At 3600 I defintely
had a few Rice Krispies (snap, crackle, pop), so went up to 4000 as some
others have done. I've been listening to music most of the day and
haven't heard anything untoward, so I think 4000 is good for me, now.

Yeah, when it says that the WLAN mod is disabled it means you've NOT
applied the mod, yet. So, the Touch's wi-fi card is still on and
working. You definitely don't want to do that one until you've got the
Touch successfully changed over to ethernet---something I'm hopefully
going to have a go at later this week when our CAT 6 wiring project
gets done!

No its not a problem. I actually left a remark about it on the blog,
because I knew this question would be coming.

It's a kernel related problem. Logitech just need to apply a kernel
patch for solving it.

BTW. I just changed from Beta to Normal status.

As a matter of fact - I uploaded a BETA version for testing last
night.
Feedback is appreciated. I hope to have enough feedback by tomorrow
to get away from BETA.

Several people managed to get it installed according to instructions
already.

Your issue:
Please check if you've been in the right directory when unpacking the
tarfile. Otherwise it won't work.

While unpacking the file ( running the tar command) you should see
the file exctraction printouts in the terminal window.
If not something obviously went wrong. You might try a copy/paste of
the
listed tar command.

Good luck.

Now really, you don't think that if the actual builders of the device

If one wants to imagine that they hear a difference afterwords, then
by all means software mod away if it makes one think they are getting
more for their money or out of the unit.

Except that in this case changing the code does things like turn off
the wireless module, which is something the developers would never do.

The developers are NOT trying to make the best sounding device they
can. They are trying to include a certain feature set, hit a certain
price point, and at the same time get a sound quality level that
matches the MARKETING goals. By definition, they have to make
compromises that affect ultimate SQ. The Touch was not designed for
the best sound we can get. It was designed to get the best sound we
can, while including all the features we need for a product with broad
market appeal, and we have to hit the MSRP of $300 so the mass market
will buy it.

Conversely, many mods are done on the basis of lets go for better SQ,
even if we lose one of the software or hardware features - because we
don't care about those features. In an earlier discussion of these
mods, someone wrote that they couldn't understand the point of a mod
that turned off the screen of the Touch. Why buy the Touch, then?,
they asked. But that mod could make sense for someone who has no
intention of using the Touch screen in their setup, and sits too far
from the Touch for the display to be useful. That person bought the
Touch for its OTHER features, and the screen wasn't important to them.

I modded my Touch in a way that eliminated the analogue out and
replaced it with clocks/connectors to a master clock. Do I care? No,
b/c I had no intention of using the Touch as anything other than a
digital transport/user interface. Logitech would never make a mod like
that, as it would limit their customer base to owners of external DACs
and master clocks - a very small market segment. Does the mod improve
the sound? Definitely.

If you do care about those features, don't try the mods that eliminate
them. If those features don't matter to you, consider giving the mods a
try.

If he was planning to charge for his mods I'd understand it, but unless

Now really, you don't think that if the actual builders of the device
could improve things by simply changing the code that they won't?! Get
real!

If one wants to imagine that they hear a difference afterwards, then
by all means software mod away if it makes one think they are getting
more for their money or out of the unit.

If one wants to imagine that they hear a difference afterwards, then
by all means software mod away if it makes one think they are getting
more for their money or out of the unit.

But why would they? The developers are putting together a software
package for general purpose use by large numbers of people, they are
trying to get a large set of functionality out of the device.

The mods in question are all about turning things off or down that are
not essential for the actual playback of music. The fewer stuff running
on the computer the less the processor has to work and the fewer memory
accesses there are. This DOES decrease the noise on supply and ground
plane. The Touch already has pretty low noise, which is one of the
reasons it does sound so good, BUT its NOT zero. I can measure noise on
the supply and ground plane and this noise does change with what is
going on software wise.

I don't have good enough test equipment to determine EXACTLY the
mechanism how each change in software actually affects the outputs, but
its good enough to see that there are actual electrical changes in the
box that have the possibility of affecting the outputs.

They are not large changes it is true. But then audiophiledom is all
about getting the last little nth of improvement. Thats what these
sorts of changes do, they are all about getting the best out of the
equipment that you can get.

Its definitely not for everybody. You do give up functionality in order
to achieve that slight improvement. The changes are reversible so if you
don't like them or you don't think the improvement is worth what you
give up, you don't have to use it.

Does it really translates to measurable/significant changes at the
 *outputs* of the Touch ?
Dramatic changes on the digital output is also claimed ?

Id love to see an audio diff maker test on these things.

These changes also include server-side changes to send FLAC as WAV this
have been proven by other forum members with the ability to measure it
that it does not change the outputs of any squeezebox.

The perspective we need is that these are small differences.

Mr soudchecks enthusiastic writing about how every so small change in a
config on computer audio devices makes dramatic changes defies all
 beliefs ?

Never the less shutting down wifi I've done because I simply don't use
it and Touch have very sparse system resources they may be needed
 elsewhere.

Everyone can use the Forum search functions all old discussions are
archived , the easiest way would be to got to sound-checks profile and
view all his post that can anyone do .

Or search for similar discussions .

Very well this is a hobby enjoy .

But if this is turning in to a business proposition I would like to
 see.
Before and after measurements on the device .

I will do the tests next year - but I'm afraid few will accept the
results.

The theory that it is processor related noise (presumably on the ground
plane of the digital connection) that can impact the DAC as jitter can
be easily tested by injecting artifical noise into the circuit.

Another aspect rarely discussed is that there should be a difference
when an SB plays out from its internal buffer only, with the network
disconnected...

Likewise, a 24/48 track simply upsampled to 24/96 should sound worse
because the processor is doing more work...

What keeps me back posting those modifications to the community is the
fear that
these might be misused or copied by others for different commercial

I do have the feeling that I need to avoid this to happen.
