Not any system is the same. And measurements are an art on its own. I don't believe in any of those measurements out there. You can turn all on and off with one command. I play completely open here. Yep. I do even claim that turning off a channel in asound.conf makes a difference. As I wrote on the BLOG: Less is more - that's the philosophy behind all my mods. It's that simple. You might want to look at the alsa pages how a buffer works and gets managed. Don't forget to look up the code and kernel scheduler, timers drivers, interrupt handler, power supplies asf. to figure it out. Good luck. You'll need it. I just stopped speculating about what's causing this or that. You see that the discussions I started earlier ( see Mnyb link) won't lead anywhere. I just try an idea and see if it works. I can tell you I tried plenty of other measures which went into the wrong direction. People like Gordon Rankin (Wavelength Audio) are not able to nail those effects down, even though he got the best analyzers and equipment at hand. At least people like him and Charles Hansen (Ayre) meanwhile admit that those effects exists. Hansen even wrote his own player. (And all thhis sudden honesty took a lot of time to show up. (Due to obvious business related reasons. If all DACs suffer you admit it openly. If not the effect doesn't exist because you can't measure it - pretty simple marketing strategy to protect your product.) Even those guys enjoy software like Amarra or similar, because it just makes computer based audio sounding better. Again good luck on your quest. I gotta run. Klaus, Very big thank you for making these mods open to us all. I found your instructions just fine, although i'm probably a little more tech savy with this kind of things than a lot of people here. What I didn't expect was quite how big the impact your changes have had. I played around with some of your earlier mods and found the effect fairly minimal. Now the changes to SQ are very obvious even playing fairly low bandwidth streaming radio and MP3s. I guess that switching off the wireless and the screen is probably contributing significantly. Unfortunately, at this time I'm unable to turn off the WLAN, but I enabled the PCM stream to the Touch and turned off the analog outputs. Of these two, the PCM seemed to have the greatest impact. I had to set the buffer size to 4000. I'll try the screen-off next. What I hear is a greater overall clarity. On well recorded music, I hear better definition of instrument lines and voices and, surprisingly, tighter and more tuneful bass. Hi all, I've been testing the mods since sunday and they are very impressive. More clean sound and treble extension (which I cannot explain). 24/96 works with no problems at all. When logging in to the Touch you login as user root. That's why you end up in the /root directory first. Sounds like you finally got it knocked! Congrats. At 3600 I defintely had a few Rice Krispies (snap, crackle, pop), so went up to 4000 as some others have done. I've been listening to music most of the day and haven't heard anything untoward, so I think 4000 is good for me, now. Yeah, when it says that the WLAN mod is disabled it means you've NOT applied the mod, yet. So, the Touch's wi-fi card is still on and working. You definitely don't want to do that one until you've got the Touch successfully changed over to ethernet---something I'm hopefully going to have a go at later this week when our CAT 6 wiring project gets done! -- rgro Rick System information Main: PS Audio Quintet Touch (wireless) CA DacMagic Marantz PM8003 VA Mozart Grands REL Acoustics R305. If one wants to imagine that they hear a difference afterwords, then by all means software mod away if it makes one think they are getting more for their money or out of the unit. Except that in this case changing the code does things like turn off the wireless module, which is something the developers would never do. The developers are NOT trying to make the best sounding device they can. They are trying to include a certain feature set, hit a certain price point, and at the same time get a sound quality level that matches the MARKETING goals. By definition, they have to make compromises that affect ultimate SQ. The Touch was not designed for the best sound we can get. It was designed to get the best sound we can, while including all the features we need for a product with broad market appeal, and we have to hit the MSRP of $300 so the mass market will buy it. Conversely, many mods are done on the basis of lets go for better SQ, even if we lose one of the software or hardware features - because we don't care about those features. In an earlier discussion of these mods, someone wrote that they couldn't understand the point of a mod that turned off the screen of the Touch. Why buy the Touch, then?, they asked. But that mod could make sense for someone who has no intention of using the Touch screen in their setup, and sits too far from the Touch for the display to be useful. That person bought the Touch for its OTHER features, and the screen wasn't important to them. I modded my Touch in a way that eliminated the analogue out and replaced it with clocks/connectors to a master clock. Do I care? No, b/c I had no intention of using the Touch as anything other than a digital transport/user interface. Logitech would never make a mod like that, as it would limit their customer base to owners of external DACs and master clocks - a very small market segment. Does the mod improve the sound? Definitely. If you do care about those features, don't try the mods that eliminate them. If those features don't matter to you, consider giving the mods a try. -- firedog Tranquil PC fanless WHS server running SqueezeServer; SB Touch slaved to Empirical Audio Pace Car; KRK Ergo, MF V DAC3, MF X-150 amp, Devore Gibbon Super 8 Speakers; Mirage MS-12 sub; Dual 506 + Ortofon 20 (occasional use); sometimes use PC with M-Audio 192 as digital source. If one wants to imagine that they hear a difference afterwards, then by all means software mod away if it makes one think they are getting more for their money or out of the unit. But why would they? The developers are putting together a software package for general purpose use by large numbers of people, they are trying to get a large set of functionality out of the device. The mods in question are all about turning things off or down that are not essential for the actual playback of music. The fewer stuff running on the computer the less the processor has to work and the fewer memory accesses there are. This DOES decrease the noise on supply and ground plane. The Touch already has pretty low noise, which is one of the reasons it does sound so good, BUT its NOT zero. I can measure noise on the supply and ground plane and this noise does change with what is going on software wise. I don't have good enough test equipment to determine EXACTLY the mechanism how each change in software actually affects the outputs, but its good enough to see that there are actual electrical changes in the box that have the possibility of affecting the outputs. They are not large changes it is true. But then audiophiledom is all about getting the last little nth of improvement. Thats what these sorts of changes do, they are all about getting the best out of the equipment that you can get. Its definitely not for everybody. You do give up functionality in order to achieve that slight improvement. The changes are reversible so if you don't like them or you don't think the improvement is worth what you give up, you don't have to use it. I will do the tests next year - but I'm afraid few will accept the results. The theory that it is processor related noise (presumably on the ground plane of the digital connection) that can impact the DAC as jitter can be easily tested by injecting artifical noise into the circuit. Another aspect rarely discussed is that there should be a difference when an SB plays out from its internal buffer only, with the network disconnected...
