Thorsten,

I updated the Lubuntu spec with modified content from Xubuntu. ( look @ the
Inspiration :- ) 

Mario - we could use your help in adding words to the spec which will assist
artists as they craft submissions. In addition, I would like a high quality
( png / svg ) logo image so that I may create the Lubuntu flickr group. Just
attached it to the spec or send it to my email. :-)

* Dates *

A general discussion about the best format for dates and the "silent
consensus" is to accept the ISO 8601 standard which is -mm-dd.

* Open Office Splash *

The question was raised the current Open Office splash screen will need to
be changed. It was agreed the splash screen should be updated but deferred
as LibreOffice branding is under heavy development.

* Inkscape *

For users of Inkscape under Maverick an annoying bug which scrambles the
rulers pointers has been fixed and is available from a PPA.

* Bugsquad Icon * 

Leandro's designs were selected as the desired candidate and this task was
closed. Thanks to everyone who submitted proposals.

* Xubuntu Wallpaper Submissions *

The specification is complete and Xubntu wallpaper submission will be
accepted.

* OpenShot Remix *

A remix of the Ubuntu promotional video clip was posted as a proof of
concept for the OpenShot video editor. The view count is currently at 797 on
YouTube.

* Edubuntu Wallpaper Submissions *

The specification is complete and Edubntu wallpaper submission will be

Thank you for your comments. I really like what PiTiVi has accomplished to
date but improvements lag behind other products such as OpenShot and
Kdenlive. IMO Ubuntu needs a robust video editor targeted to "not
professionally trained" individuals.

I like the idea of an OpenShot screen cast and I will see if I can squeeze
it in. :-)

My hope was the spec would provide enough background info for folks to
create submissions. Along the way I encouraged thinking out of the box and
IMO we have a great set of submissions to choose from.

As participation was open to all, it was easy to voice an opinion or express
a vision by submitting artwork and if the decision was not to submit that
was ok as well. :-) 

With everything on the project board my expectation is folks will pick and
choose based on their interest and availability.

The topic of changing the name of the team to "Design Team" was only spoke
of briefly at the last meeting and did not receive enough discussion IMO
opinion to move it forward. I certainly like the idea but we already have a
Canonical design team and having two may become problematic.

I agree choosing the best submission to represent the team is going to be a
challenge and will take some time but placing the entire effort on hold
pending the identification of our scope would be a mistake. IMO our scope is
defined by what we are able to complete, the acceptance of our work by the
community, and is likely to change from time to time. There are too many
unknowns.

As to the topic of selection, I certainly welcome suggestions. 

My first choice is to engage the Design Team. They know us best and are the
most qualified. IMO I believe folks will respect their decision as fair and
impartial.

My second choice is to assemble a panel of qualified judges from outside of
the community.

My third choice is to create a poll and let the team decide.

I would like to get this right, but if some time in the future we decide to
change it - wouldn't that be fun.

I am making an assumption some folks will install Xubuntu on smaller laptops
or perhaps netbooks.

My question is how well does this design scale to a "1024 x 576" 16:9 aspect
ratio.

welcome Rafael, Mario, and Julien from the Lubuntu community to the team.

The next item to be complete is the spec. We have two available for your
consideration. IMO a modification of the Xubuntu spec would be a good start.
For the most part these are Thorsten's handi-work and I am sure he and
others from the team would be willing to assist.

In many ways this is an excellent opportunity for us to learn more about the
Lubuntu distribution.

Without a doubt Artwork and criticism are like oil and vintager. Without
critique there is no opportunity for improvement; too much criticism kills
creativity. It may sound like a no win situation, but it's not.

The secret is to acknowledge the effort even if you disagree with the
result.

>From the mentor's perspective this works as it affirms regardless of the
result, it took time and energy to create it. Acknowledging this first
frames the rest. Phrasing comments favorably by stating what you liked will
make comments for improvement more palatable. Making reference of an example
is a great learning opportunity.

>From the contributor's perspective this works as it affirms the fact it took
time and energy to critique and comment on your work. Accept this as a
positive even if the words are not what you were hoping to hear. Accept the
fact the author is simply offering their point of view based on the
information available.

Why is this important? Posting submissions on this team should be viewed as
an opportunity and the success of the team is dependent on participation. Do
not be afraid to contribute because your efforts may not be received
favorably. There is no better place.

When asked, please critique another members effort as I consider mentoring
equally important.

The guidance from the spec states a blue palette and I decided to use these

I decided to give the OpenShot video editor a test by remixing the Ubuntu
promotional video to some music and adding intro and exit sequences. After
changing the theme to be less "MAC" I was very comfortable with the
interface and pleased with the power.

The additional sequences were created in GIMP and Inkscape.

I titled the clip "Ubuntu - Something Beautiful".

That's great news. Leandro will you work on your #4, 5, & 1 submissions as
suggested by Vish? My experience is icons in the 16px range can be a
challenge. :-)

Artwork Team Logo submissions are very positive and thank you. However as
the clock ticks down on this task (2010-12-01) I would like to challenge the
Team to think out of the box.

[ubuntu-art] Inkscape Papercut

[j_baer]

Inkscape under Maverick has an annoying bug where the ruler markers do not
display correctly.

If you want to take a chance, :-) an updated version may be loaded which
fixed this issue for me.

LibreOffice is currently at 3.3 Beta 3 and much of the ground work continues
to be laid. My understanding is the current branding will remain for this
release but the desire is to re-brand the next release with a community
emphasis. With that in mind, early submission may be more brain storming but
are very important.

The LibreOffice community has expressed their appreciation for the
contributions from this community.

* Icon for Ubuntu-bugsquad *

The spec for this task is complete and early submissions placed. There is
still time for additional ideas!

* Community Toolkit * 

A vigorous discussion on a community toolkit occurred where the desire was
expressed to have a repository of "css" style sheets and other branding
assets to assist web designers in updating web pages.

* Xubuntu Wallpaper *

The specs for this task was discussed and agreed changes are now in place.
If the specs does not provide a clear understanding of the desired outcome,
please post your questions to the list. If you would your submission
reviewed, post this request to the list.

* Edubuntu Wallpaper *

The spec for this task is still under review. I anticipate this to be
complete shortly.

* Tweaks to the Wiki *

With the desire to improve the wiki to better serve our needs some minor
changes have been made. If something does not work as expected please post
to the list.

this team and I applaud this moving to center stage within the community.

The question for us is "what is the best approach"? Will our current

Hrafn,

First of all I love the "Color Palette Generator" site. Thanks for sharing
that as I was using "Color Hunter". The attempt of the first palette is to
simply box in the colors used by the GTK theme or colors of the community (
viz. Orange = Ubuntu ). 

The inspirational image is to provide a greater breathe to the palette.

I am transparent to the "light" Ubuntu design concept. :-) If it doesn't
make sense to the Edubuntu community then let's drop it. I would suggest the
same argument can be made with "Natty".

Thank you for posting this request to the project board. I took the liberty

but I have a few questions. :-)

* Target Audience

Is the target audience young school age children or the class room?

* The successful design will be accepted in the Scalable Vector Graphics (
"svg" ) format.

There may be folks who prefer to use GIMP is "svg" really desired?

* The desktop will be Gnome

What is this correct?

* Due 01/17/2011

Generally artwork arrives later in the release cycle, somewhere between user
interface freeze and beta.

As a result of the renewed activity of the Team, Martin Owens ( "doctorno" )
scheduled an IRC meeting to discuss topics such as leadership, grievance,
and other processes of the team.

* Xubuntu and Edubuntu Natty Wallpapers *

The Xubuntu and Edubuntu communities posted requests to the project board
for wallpaper submissions. If I remember correctly, there was a thread some
time back where many members indicated creating wallpapers was their
interest.

I believe this is an excellent opportunity for the team!

* Artwork Team Logo Update *

The submissions are still being posted and the quality and creativity is
excellent. Thank you!  The deadline is closing in (12/01) but there is still
time for more ideas and submissions. As I stated before this is a high
visibility icon which will add value to the team and the community. Don't be

[ubuntu-art] Need Help with Wallpaper Spec

Hello Everyone,

This is very exciting! We have requests to create submissions for the
default wallpaper for Edubuntu and Xubuntu. At this point in time it makes
sense IMO to create a spec which will assist artists prepare great
submissions.

Here are the bullet points that come to my mind.

* Single image for all resolutions ( viz. aspect ratio independent )

* "png" file format

* 1900 x 1200 dimensions { ? }

* CC license

* Suggested palette

* Theming suggestions

I feel like I am missing things.

The following comments may be more a * brain dump * than anything else. :-) 

I do not know the intent or the desired outcome of the authors of
"screenshots.debian.net", but drawing a conclusion from the URL I assume the
desire was to offer Debian users a method to showcase their desktop.

The Ubuntu Software Centre desires to offer an enhanced user experience by
providing information about products which will assist the user in
determining the suitability of an offering to their needs. Although
“screenshots.debian.net” is a good match, it’s not a perfect match. 

* The most pressing issue is screenshots may not be current and reflect what
is being offered. In addition, there is no easy method (?) to expire an
image and/or contact the submitter.

* There is the unknown of appropriate content and this is managed. I realize
“someone” reviews content at "screenshots.debian.net" but the approval
process is unclear.

* The Software Centre is package centric and in reality a package may be an
aggregate of several functional deliverables. Theme packages are a good
example of this.

* In today’s world a graphic image is just one way to deliver information.
The current solution does not support alternatives such as videos in the
form of a screen cast.

* Last, what is the impact to Ubuntu if "screenshots.debian.net" is
unavailable?

All of this leads me to believe building something new may be better than
fixing something old. In addition there is a need from this team for an
image repository. The title “Ubuntu Media Center” comes to mind. :-)

Something tells me if we design it, someone will build it.

Thank you for adding this to the project board. I created a * very draft * 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/Request-7 spec on the wiki  for your
consideration.

IMO the artist will want to know the theme, palette, and things such as
image size and file format. The other important item is aspect ratio. 

I am assuming you want one image for all use cases.

I would leave the other design choices open as you may be pleasantly
surprised by the creativity of the submissions.

I was unclear of the desired outcome so the wiki has "alot" guessing on my
part. Based on the comments of this thread is sounds like desire is to
re-brand the debian site to a Ubuntu look and feel. I assume the debian site
will remain unaltered. The task IMO is mostly updating the "CSS" and adding
Ubuntu assets ( sounds like folks are ready to help ). 

If the above is correct, do we have a place in launchpad where folks can
check out and check in code,

and ...

would you like mock ups attached to the wiki or submitted elsewhere?

The desire of the Ubuntu community is to assist the LibreOffice community as
best as we can. The negative comments expressed by some do not represent the
community at large. 

Although frustrating to some, in the world of open source you do the best
you can with the resources available. Surprisingly it works out very well.

If the desire of the LibreOffice community is to engage artistic submissions
as a contest I am willing to offer my submissions and encourage others to do
the same.

The spec on the wiki is draft waiting your review and comment and as I
stated earlier to your list, folks will need direction on how to post
submissions. The desired tool is your call.

For the members who participate on this team may I remind you that your
actions are to always reflect the Ubuntu code of conduct and to represent
the community in the best possible manner. Anything less is unacceptable.

Coz,

Thank you you for taking the initiative. Justing * thinking out loud *, IMO
we need to make contact with the owners of the current icon to discover if
they are agreeable to a change. The response may be yes, yes with additional
changes, or no.

If the response is * yes with additional changes * my desire would be to add
it to the project board, create a "spec", and open it up for submissions.

Hello Everyone,

The LibreOffice marketing list is very active and I do not know of the
numerous ideas being proposed what will stick. 

It is my understanding they want to open the logo design for submissions and
this will be handled as a contest from their wiki. I do not expect specific
tasks to this team as their membership spans many different communities.

Thorsten,

There is no criticism toward you as your submissions and contributions to
the community are always very good.  If Nicolas and Marcus are satisfied (
and I believe they are ) this task is complete and thank you for taking the
initiative. 

The team today compared to the team last July is as different as night and
day. I echo your comments about the other tasks at hand as my concern going
forward is there will be too much work.

I must confess working as a team is difficult. There is "pride of ownership"
which must be shared and there is constant change which is sometimes
difficult to accept.

I have no delusions of grandeur and I realize there will be challenges (
viz. wiki ). We must all realize and accept the team is greater than sum of
its members and if it is working correctly any team member may step out or
step in without causing harm to the whole.

In summary there are no bounties to be paid other than personal satisfaction
and recognition for your contributions. I can't help with the first but I'm
working on the later. :-) 

All I can say to everyone who contributes is thank you as this is how it
works.

[ubuntu-art] Adding a Task to the Project Board

The work we perform may be classified as either a request or a proposal. The
two are identical with the following exceptions. 

1. A request originates from the community
2. A proposal originates from the team
3. A proposal has more risk as it may be rejected by the community

Attached to every request or proposal should be a specification or "spec".
The spec informs team members who are interested in contributing what needs
to be done. It may also serve as the criteria for acceptance ( does the
submission satisfy the spec ). In agile development I often say "define
don't assign".

The question is when should a task be added to the

Requests

- Requests from the community may be added upon receipt as long as they have
a sponsor.

-- If the spec is missing, set the status to "Waiting spec"

-- If unassigned, leave assigned blank

Proposals

- I suggest proposals be discussed on the mailing list first and when there
is agreement to proceed, add it to the project board. In the case of a
proposal, the team member or the team is the sponsor.

-- Proposal specs should be complete before posting to the project board

-- In many cases with proposals, assigned is the same as sponsor

Solicitation for Advice

Generally requests for advice are best suited for the mailing list. If the
discussion evolves into the creation of mock ups or performing research, it
may be wise to post a task to the project board and create a spec as we did
with the "Ubuntu Forums" request.

This is certainly a project that would add value to Ubuntu and the
community. I find it awkward using Launchpad bug tracking in this manner but
with a blend of wiki maybe this will work. :-)

IMO it needs a blueprint which can be linked to the specification.

I am willing to draft a specification with milestones for your
consideration. I don't know what the requirements are but we can discuss
that in a future dialog.

I will also include assumptions as discussion points. 

I can have v1 of the spec ready by 11/15 or sooner for your consideration.

I am willing to jump in and help but I am confused. 

Is ccHost going away to be replaced by django?

I was also playing around with Flickr and although not a perfect fit, it is
heavy used by Artist.

One thought I had was using flickr groups.

Hey Martin,

Thanks for the quick response. The problem as I see it is we need something
now and we need something better as soon as possible. AFAIK the Wiki is the
only tool we can use now. 

Admittedly it suffers from performance issues and others but these need to
be fixed and I have submitted bug reports.

I am transparent to the final solution but from a support perspective I
suggest we adopt something similar to what is being used elsewhere ( such as
"ask.ubuntu" ). 

My dream is we can work on process improvements and technology improvements
at the same time and the goal of "light" is to improve process. :)

In your opinion what would be a good repository for submissions now ( wiki,
flickr, foopics ) ?

Thank you for the guidance. I was not aware of "foopics.com" but I uploaded
an image to test the process and I support the tool as it is very easy to
use.

branding guidelines can help.

The Design Hub which is available from Live Gnome (
http://live.gnome.org/UsabilityProject/Whiteboard/DesignHub ) looks
interesting but may require additional development work.

What are the chances we could leverage this effort into our infrastructure
solution? Can we call out for developers? If the answer is no, what other
solution holds the most promise. We have the solution proposed by Martin.

Coming up with a resource list is a good idea but the question becomes who
is going to maintain it and how will the information be used?

Changing names is also a slippery path. Should we seek ways to further
separate us from the Canonical design team or find ways to bring us
together?

Ambiance Refined - William Middleton

The wiki page is missing alot of detail although there is a reference to
Ubuntu-Art and it is rated at 72% good. If William can update the wiki as to
why a user may want to consider this theme I'm Ok with this submission -
otherwise no.

Ambiance Blue - Paolo Bianchini

Seems more like a concept than a submission - no.

Ambiancell - luxierayku

Again the wiki page is lacking informaton a user might use when considering
this theme - no.

Finery - Immanuel Peratoner

Ok

Depends on equinox engine. Don't know if that is in the Ubuntu repository?

not receive a reply. pr09studio had several.

As there was a lot process change this release some folks may have been
confused and the discussion on the Ayatana thread may have added to the
confusion.

I suggest we go with the six themes and take an action item to discuss what
make the most sense for Natty.

[ubuntu-art] Crunch Time

We are fast approaching the time when community themes need to be in their
final form. I plan to test next week against a fresh Maverick install and
report my findings.

I'm not sure what version of Murrine will make the cut but I am assuming the
"Murrine Daily Build" will be the source. I had some trouble installing this
version in Maverick today.

I also notice some folks posted themes in the "Ubuntu Artist" area of
deviantART. I will drop them a note to see if they have some interest in
Community Themes as there was a lot of process change this release and there
may be some confusion. :)

Thanks! An old metacity trick with unfocused windows is to decrease the
opacity. The desired outcome is to keep the focused window well defined and
other windows less defined.

I'm pleased to announce the availability of the Alpha release of the
Impression and Night Impression 10.10 GTK themes for Maverick Meerkat.

These themes may be tested with either Maverick or Lucid with the latest
Murrine theme engine is installed.

Enhanced Metacity Theme

Metacity code improvements should speed execution and the improved window
control buttons offer simplicity in design with an intuitive approach to
operation.

Re-designed GTK

Many improvements are available from enhancements made to the Murrine GTK
engine providing a level of presentation second to none.

The Impression series uses a gradient scroll bar and progress bar trough
introduced by the Ambiance and Radiance themes. Muted, not bold; scroll bars
are available but not in the way.

Note book tabs are themed to provide a higher level of focus to the selected
tab. Clicking a tab presents an illusion of movement as the selected tab
becomes bright and the others fall to the shadows.

Tool bars maintain a hint of shading to provide a measured amount of depth
to the presentation.

Scale controls follow the same design philosophy as scroll bars as the
slider control button is muted until needed.

Finally, the palette of Impression is the traditional warm gray splashed
with Orange and the palette of Night Impression is a cool gray accentuated
with Aubergine.

Vibrant and exciting these themes deliver a powerful intuitive user
experience and a consistent Ubuntu look and feel.

to the current wiki page my suggestion is create a new page in
"Artwork/Documentation" title CommunityThemesGuidelines.

Move the content of the current CommunityThemes page to
CommunityThemesGuidelines.

When this is complete update CommunityThemes with the public facing content.

This will resolve the current issue and provide adequate time to plan for
the best long term solution.

would like to replace the content of the current page with the new content. 

My desire in creating this page was to align with the new Ubuntu branding to
the greatest extent possible and to showcase the themes without preference.

page to make an informed decision.

New audience - I was pleasantly surprised to see this page linked to the
installation of the "community-themes" package using the Software Center.
IMO this is spot on! My vision of the page is informative to the user who is
interested in installing the package (viz. new requirement).

At the end of the page I envision a short walk through of the installation
process targeted toward the new user.

Issues:

- What is the desired image sized of the screen shot?  IMO one is enough.

- Is the general format Ok? I removed the Artwork banner as it did not seem
to fit.

- The "logo" is my attempt to blend with the new Ubuntu look (e.g. "fish")
assuming the appearance of the wiki will not change. Other ideas are
welcomed.

If this designed is agreed, I hope the respective authors will supply screen
shots and text. Otherwise I will do the best I can. : )

My desire is to have this complete and ready by the release candidate.

[ubuntu-art] Cleaning up Community Themes

Andrew,

I would like to update the Community Themes wiki page to reflect the
contents of this package. I am assuming there will be one last push (v.23)
between now and RC. :)

I know I updated the Impression series to bring it into alignment with
default and others may have uploaded "last minute" tweaks as well.

My thought is the wiki page should inform those who have an interest in
installing this package what each theme looks like with appropriate comments
describing its features.

Is v.22 the final list of themes for this package?

If not, would it be possible to get a clip of the new ubuntu with black text
on a transparent background and another with white text? I tried gimp-ing
images from the web but the quality is not there.

My experience has been the "zoom" function doesn't always fix the problem.
In some ways how can it? The image can be cropped, scaled down, or scaled up
but not changed.
Your GIMP & Inkscape templates highlight the issue clearly but I don't want
to be constrained to the least common denominator of image space.

I am not advocating creating a wallpaper for each image size, but a single
wallpaper for each aspect ratio or at least the most common ones.

I believe an image scaled to 1920x1200 will “zoom” to the other 8:5
dimensions correctly (i.e. 1680x1050, 1440x900, 1280x800).

Assuming this adds value, will Gnome support it?

Andrew,

I could not agree more. My desire is to move the Impression and Night
Impression GTK themes to a unified code base (  I've already started work on
this ) with no major changes.

For me the wild card is the work being done by the  Ayatana team. This is
something I would like to leverage if it will be ready in time.

I believe Ken would like artwork to be ready before the first beta on March
18th.

Perhaps Yahoo would be willing to support open source by relaxing the file
size restriction for communities like Ubuntu. A request like this would
probably be better received if made by Canonical but I am willing to give
them a shout if you prefer.

I use Flickr and for the most part I am happy with how it works. I discovered
large images are cropped to 1024x768 and this may be a problem if we are
going to use Flickr for wallpaper submissions (2650x1920).

I assume this restriction is removed if you purchase a "pro" subscription.
Although $24.95 is not a lot of money it raises all kinds of physiological
questions about open source, free, community support, etc.

Some may question why the wiki is not good enough.

My question is the desired role of Flickr for the Ubuntu ArtTeam?

Fedora certainly has an active art group and I'm sure the wallpaper for
Fedora 12 will look as good as Fedora 11. However there is a lot to be said
in what Ubuntu has to deliver.

IMO when Karmic ships folks will be generally pleased with the changes and
the quality of the presentation. As I alluded to in an earlier post with
community themes added to the mix the total artwork package is very good.

In addition to Fedora I also like and respect the efforts of the openSUSE
project. It looks like 11.2 will have new professional artwork.
