Re: Suggestion about interface

I like the buttons, but worry about them taking up too much screen
real estate. We should definitely test on a 800x480 res screen and
see how usable the application is. Maybe a good compromise would be
to size the buttons to the minimal size needed by the average finger
so they are not bigger than they need to be. Also, maybe some of the

IRC meeting Thursday 2007-10-18 at 1600 UTC

2007-10-16 Thread David Mandala
Hi,

We'll be having the normal IRC meeting on #ubuntu-mobile, as usual, on
Thursday 2007-10-18 at 1600 UTC.

Please make sure to post status reports to this list before 1400 UTC on
Thursday, and if you have agenda items, please add them to the page on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded/Meeting/20071018 before the
meeting. It will also greatly help if you tag your agenda items with
your name.

I'm sending this out a wee bit early since I've made some changes to the
pages. Now https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded/Meeting/ will
contain a link to the current meeting and links to prior meetings and
their minutes. The actual meetings will have their own pages by date.
I hope this will make it easier to track what we do and when.

Thank you,

David

PPM status

2007-10-16 Thread Abbas, Mohamed
There are two more items I need to finish for moblin, these items are:

* Installing xbacklight app, PPM uses this app to control
brightness, once installed a more accurate measurement can be taken.
* I also need to do more investigation on the wireless adapter of
moblin device. All the wireless plugin we have were tested using iwl
driver.

I hope to finish these two items by this Friday.

Agreed. Could even go a step further and make the common send,

if there's ever a plan to release in other languages). My big question
is why not just assume people that will use web email (and there is data

But with so many services like Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo mail, etc - is the
purpose of implementing an actual email client app to satisfy

Hi Jason,

Using icons instead of text for buttons is certainly an option. I
went with text because it's clear and creating a meaningful,
unambiguous icon can sometimes be difficult (especially given the
space constraints in the interface).

When I worked at Pepper we had the same discussion about webmail. We
found that our users wanted a real email client - though people will
use webmail, many prefer a real mail client for a variety of reasons.
Reading/composing offline is one; others include immature web clients
(though they're getting better), lack of webmail availability,
familiarity/comfort with a 'real' mail client, and the ability to
check more than one account at the same time with the same interface.

RE: Suggestion about interface

2007-10-16 Thread GrueMaster
As a user of Evolution, I can tell you that having the ability to
combine 5 different email services into one client is very handy. Some
of the email servers that I connect to only have imap or a very ugly
version of Outlook Express Web (nearly useless on any OS, including XP).
And their imap service actually works better with Linux than Windows (go
figure).

What is the possibility of having the icons loaded on app init? This
would allow the users to customize the app icons to suit their needs,
whether it be for localization or shear look for the style challenged
(you'd be amazed at how many there are in this category - just look at
some of the user created themes for the various desktop environments on
the web). The mechanism could be similar to other apps with theming
capabilities (amarok, xmms, xine, etc).

When I use an email app things rarely take more than 1sec (lookup names,
cycle through incoming mail, etc). Also, if we import webmail (via POP)

Friends,
A few words on showing a learning path to a new ubuntu developer.

First:
For a person outside the computer field, sheer volume of things to be learned
is overwhelming and one feels lost. It would be very helpful if one is told in
the very beginning that to achieve xyz you would need to know at least abc
and def things well and that here are a few helpful tutes on these topics.

Second(this is aimed at creating a strong developer community):

Leaving out some good engineering colleges, there are tens of engineering
colleges all across punjab (i assume the situation is no different in other
states) in which there are no good teachers and students learn almost on their
own. Linux is badly taught and badly represented.
For these students(mind you they are in lakhs) if we were to provide a one stop
budding developer section it would not only be according to the ubuntu
philosophy but would also help widen ubuntu community and help the operating
system evolve.

Re: [ubuntu-in] ubuntu India website redesign

2007-10-16 Thread Lut4rp
Is drupal.org not a community site? Is spreadfirefox.com not a community site
 ? There are
plethora of examples where community websites are running on a CMS
 based solution.

Thats not all, the MTV UK website, the NASA Jobs website and Lifestyle
TV website are also on Drupal. Drupal is an excellent framework for
building highly scalable websites (read: personal to massive). If Mir
Nazim is on the list, Mir, I remember you once suggested re-design
using Drupal?

One major reason for this is horrible navigation on the website. It
was during discussion with Pratul that we realized the depth of
content on the site and non-navigatability of the site. You are lucky
if users stayed for minute and half. I normally would leave in half a
 minute.
Bad navigation was more of an impetus than look and feel, for me to
 propose this redesign.

Yeah, this was the MAJOR point of the discussion. All major wiki's I
have seen have nice navigation. One of my all time favorites: The
OSx86 project wiki (wiki.osx86project.org)
One visit, and you have all the info you require in one-look on the
index page itself.

IMHO we do require an overhaul, but since I have been personally
attached to Drupal for quite some time, I suggested it. And yes, there
is no point denying that starting up a Drupal site is a little
time-consuming, but then its same for every solution.

If required I can setup a demo Drupal installation on my server, where
we might try out a new-look Ubuntu India. What do you say?

Server space is not taht much of a problem and there are several guys
on the mailing list who are well versed with drupal. I personally
would prefer a drupal based solution than a wiki based solution for a
simple reason, my experience says if you apply patches to drupal site
and adhere to drupal.org warning maintaining a drupal powered site is
a breeze. Where as wiki has more cleanup work required because there
is little control you can excercise over content going into wiki.
Also, with workflow setup properly you can havea powerful
collaborative content development in place.

Re: [ubuntu-in] ubuntu India website redesign

2007-10-16 Thread Parth
My Two Cents,

I tend to side with the wiki based site for certain reasons - simple,
easy to edit and manage. But there are some features I will like to
see in our side which am not sure how a wiki based solution might work
efficiently. Example is adding events and news to the wiki.

I accept this will work when the activity in the wiki is pretty good
and people aren't lazy enough to post things. And I think this is why
a few have been asking for CMS.

I wholly agree with Soumyadip on the contribution for the wiki. We
have been crying for it for almost a year now and we have not seen
much response other than Roshan putting up stuffs now and then. Am
afraid few of us who have been writing things have become more
involved with our job that we are not able to write as we used to.
This is the time and opportunity for the new entrants of the Ubuntu-In
community to pitch in and contribute. I see requests piling up in the
mailing list and this discussing stretching for days, but what we need
is people to contribute.

You are most welcomed to start a wiki page for the topic you think and
add content. Post the link to the list, we will have a look and
edit/suggest improvements. IIRC only pages which do not require
frequent alterations have been locked (and that too after spamming
happened). So nobody is stopping you from opening up new pages and
writing things.

For those who are trying to compare with other sites on Drupal, etc
etc, IMHO we want our site to have more content in an easy accessible
manner. For this, the current wiki system serves good, but we need
some better organizing and presentation of resources. We do not need a
flashy site with forms and what not. Lets keep things simple, easy to
manage and easy for users to find what they want.

Is the card detected? AFAIK the Optiplex GX620 have Broadcom adaptors
although I would have thought it would be supported (I'm fairly certain
that it is supported on Ubuntu 6.10 and higher).

Could you try setting a static IP address? (this is always easier if
you know what sort of IP addresses are on your network and what the
gateway address of the router and DNS address(es) are).

Other than that, if it's a standard Mini Tower or Desktop machine
(rather than the small form factor size), have you got a spare network
card you could try?

Hi James,

If you can wait two days, it might be worth trying 7.10 instead
(http://www.ubuntu.com/).

Network connectivity has improved throughout the years, especially
with wireless cards.

Saying that, it wouldn't harm burning your 7.04 to disk, and booting
up into the live disk to see whether your network card is detected.

If you go to System-Administration-Network, you should (hopefully!)
see a bunch of cards there.

Hi James,

One of the ways you can see if it is detected is to open the Terminal
(this can be found under the Applications menu - Accessories -
Terminal) and then entering the command:

ifconfig

You should *hopefully* see a list of adaptors come up. On my home
machine running Ubuntu 7.04 I get eth0 which is the network card and lo
which is the 'loopback' adaptor (kind of a virtual internal network card).

As Kris mentions, you may be worth hanging on until Thursday and
downloading/trying Ubuntu 7.10. I'm not back in my office until

[ubuntu-uk] Training material

2007-10-16 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

We've had a new member of the Devon Cornwall LUG asking if there are
any Ubuntu/Kubuntu training courses in the Plymouth area. As far as I'm
aware there currently isn't anything like that going on in the area..

I've mentioned about our local LUG maybe putting together some sort of
training material to cover Gnome/KDE and making it kind of generic and
not distro specific, and this got me thinking though, are there any
training materials other than the screen casts?

Something that can be used in a classroom environment is ideal.

In the mean time I've pointed this new LUG member in the direction of
the Ubuntu-UK web site (I mentioned there is a great mailing list and
some really useful screen casts that can show her visually how to do
things).

With 6.06 there are problems with the dell servers detecting the cards and I
believe it will be the same with the optiplexes, I would suggest using a
newer version than 6.06, I know it isn't as well supported but an newer
version will at least work out the bux.

[ubuntu-uk] Advice for the future

2007-10-16 Thread Jai Harrison
Hey,

I'm eighteen years old and I am on the second year of a BTEC National
Diploma for IT Practitioners. I'm looking at achieving either a DDM

want to do Computer Science at University but I all of the good ones
want A level maths (which is something I don't have).

I'm wondering if I should take a university that doesn't need A level
maths, take A level maths and then University afterwards or just
generally give up and take another direction in life... I'm feeling
pretty lost and I figured that some of you must have gone through a
similar education path in the past.

Experience is almost as important or even more important than degrees, my
advice would be find someone in your area then get some work with them if
you can, easy than it sounds I know you might even need to do it for free
but its good to get experience and then you will know what you want to focus
on. If you want to then work up to getting linux degrees or network with
cisco etc, can help you decide what part of IT you would want to work in as

Or if you like it you can be like some people(myself included) and get into

 Regards,

I agree with you ... to a point.

There are a number of factors to consider Jai:
1) What do you want to do. Research? Analysis? Consulting? Support?
2) Who do you want to work for. IBM / Sun / Yourself / local business
/ Cap Gemini / a school?
3) Who do you want to work with? IT professionals, leet haxors, your mates?
4) *Do you have the neccessary skills*. Can you explain a technical
concept to your mother? Can you go away and write a system given a few
months? Have you any proof of your skills?
5) *Do you have the neccessary qualifications*
6) *Do you have the neccessary experience*

The important ones I have marked out.

A degree in Computer Science will not teach you any of the soft
skills. It will not teach you any of the business skills. It will
teach you how to code, how to code well and all the underlying
knowledge you will need to build any computer system. Hence Computer
Science. If it means studying A level maths, study it. I had to and I
am pants at maths.

Qualifications (like MSCE, Java Certified Engineer) mean jack. Your CV
does your talking for you. Experience beats qualifications any day of
the week. The exception is a degree. Your degree is more than a piece
of paper saying: I can code in Java or I can fix a broken AD tree.
What anyone says about a degree being useless is wrong. Sorry. 90% of
employers will take the guy with the degree any day (for young people)
over someone who doesnt. If ANYTHING join the BCS. TBH anyone who
takes themselves seriously in computing is a member of the BCS.

Build your skillset now, while you still have a chance. Join the
clubs, join the open source mailing lists (employers really dig the
OSS stuff), play in bands, do stuff. This will make you a much more
rounded individual and you will gain so much experience doing this
stuff. Not to mention building up your network.

Do not fall into the typical IT trap of thinking your the dogs
bollocks. Do not spell Hyper-Text Markup Language wrong on your CV.
There will _always_ be something you don't know, or _someone_ who is
better than you. If you lie about what you can do, you *will* get
found out, and you *will* look like an idiot. Be honest, no-one is
expecting you to be perfect, and most employers would rather have
someone they can shape up and give new perspectives on things.

The most important thing is go with your instintcs. You shouldn't
force yourself to do something you will not enjoy for the rest of your
life. Likewise no-body is going to force you to do anything: you need
to decide what you want to do and go for it. If it doesnt work out,
chill, there is plenty of time to sort it out :-)

Hope that helps,

[ubuntu-uk] Clean install with separate home partition questions

2007-10-16 Thread Josh Blacker
Hi guys,

Am currently all booted up in gutsy rc live cd, but going through the
installer it doesn't seem to be very intelligent about me having user
profiles in my /home partition. It detects the ones from my Windows
partition, but not the Ubuntu ones. Any ideas on why this is, and why
I am prompted to enter new user information? I would have thought it
would be able to see my exisiting Ubuntu /home.

Well, there's nothing to import from your existing home directory is
there? If you want to use that partition, all that Gutsy needs to know
is where it is, and it will mount it.

Surely then, there should be no need to come up with new user
information, that's my point - a little counterintuitive. I understand
where you're coming from, though.

So during the partition section you need to specify which partition you
want to be swap, which is / and which is /home. Make sure you tell it
not to format /home, but it will want to format / I suspect :)

The annoying thing is, the installer lists my partitions as
/media/sda1 etc, but Nautilus as /media/disk etc, which don't even
seem to correspond! I may have to jump in and pray for the best...
Perhaps I'm just being tired and slow!

 Cheers,
 Al.

I'm wondering if I should take a university that doesn't need A level

Hi Jai,

When I was your age, I had no idea what I wanted to do - infact I wasn't
sure i even wanted to attend a university. At least you know what you
want to do, just not how to achieve it.

I would be inclined to contact the admissions department of a university
that interests you. When I was at University I had a friend who
practically failed all his A-levels and was still accepted for Computer
Science BSc. I'm sure things haven't changed that much, so you may be
in luck.

It makes me quite angry that BTEC's etc are 'sold' to school leavers as
equivalent; but the university's don't make it particularly easy. I
think the Diploma being in a related field will certainly help your
application.

One option most universities offer is an additional first year for
people that don't get grades they wanted. Another option might be
'clearing'; but you will have to be fast. One slightly risky solution
you could follow, is to pick a similar course that has fewer entry
requirements (such as Computing), then convert to CS mid-course (I
know of somebody that did this).

As I said, the best people to talk to are the admission departments -
they will offer the best advice.

Whatever you chose, don't get despondent - if you want to go to
university there is normally a way in. Keep us posted on what happens,
and good luck.

Hope this helps.

I assume you mean that gdmsetup should work when launched with gksu
when you run it after you have logged in. Yes, this is true.

I should have been more clear. I don't think gdmsetup will work when
launched directly from the login screen if the user has configured GDM
to allow people to launch this from the GDM System Menu. In this
situation, I don't believe GDM starts gdmsetup with the at-spi daemon
running, and it doesn't seem to work so well in my testing.

One idea for fixing this would be to modify gdmsetup so that it
runs as a non-root user (such as the gdm user when launched from the
logins creen), and is modified so that it has an Apply button.
This way gdmsetup would only actually modify the configuration when
the user clicks the Apply button and not the current way it works
(where it updates the configuration as you make changes in gdmsetup).
Then we could modify gdmsetup so that the action it performs when you
click this Apply button is done with privilege via gksu or whatever.
This way none of the GUI aspects of the program need to run as root.

But, as you may be aware, GDM is currently being rewritten to use
D-Bus, so perhaps things will be fixed in a different way?

Wouldn't it be a easier for everybody to just decide on a structure under

 Dear friends,

One nice feature of the live CD is that we provide a link to the

 having
translated release notes available, which is where you fine folks come in.

Draft release notes are available at

It doesn't hurt to do the work now anyway, pages can be moved/copied etc.

Certo.

conectado a rede tente usar o APTonCD [1].
acesso a internet.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Alterar rótulo do Pendrive.

2007-10-16 Thread hamacker
usará no windows tambem.

pendrives.

[Ubuntu-BR] (RE) Ativando wirelles Broadcom Corporation Dell

2007-10-16 Thread Rubinei Huttner Fischer

http://ubuntu.cafuego.net/dists/feisty-cafuego/bcm43xx/ .
Baixe o firmware bcm43xx-firmware_1.3-1ubuntu2_all.deb
Obs. desinstale o ndiswrapper e o fwcutter.

Um abraço a todos

Rubinei

[Ubuntu-BR] rodar o wine em uma janela

2007-10-16 Thread alex okajima watanabe

Alguém pode me dar alguma dica?

 Rubinei

Abçs,
Zandre.
