Ah yeah, I came across that in a post-email Google. The 'codenames' do

I think the year.month release numbers are very useful... if somebody says
to me I have OS-Something Version 1.5 I have absolutely NO idea whatsoever
whether that release is bleeding edge or deprecated. If I read Ubuntu
11.04 I know that is up-to-date: on the other hand, if I have somebody
saying can you help me with my Ubuntu 7.10 because it won't mount my memory

I think you might need to upgrade to a more recent release!!.

No, I think the numbering system works well, and I would like to see it
maintained.

As for development codenames, they exist in most operating systems. As
others have said, you can't create a YY.MM release number until you know
when it is going to go live, though with Ubuntu that's SLIGHTLY less of an
issue because of the strict six-monthly release cycle.

This. Definitely - WHS.

But also... Considerations nobody's mentioned:

[1] The thing is, with Linux, a single version number isn't very
meaningful. All the different bits are developed by different people.
Do you go by the kernel, or x.org, or GNOME, or what? Ubuntu decided
to sync its releases to the semi-annual GNOME 2 releases but now it
doesn't even use GNOME any more.

[2] International tastes vary widely. Brits prefer numbers, others do
not; e.g. my Kawasaki ZZR1100 is a ZX11 in Japan and a Ninja 1100 in
America. My Sharp CL-5500 was a Zaurus in America, and so on.

[3] Version numbers are a marketing fiction anyway most people know
that these days. At least the year/month thing contains useful
information, unlike, say, Windows 7, which is either v6.1 or NT v5
or Windows v10 depending on how you count - anything but v7.0.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] What's In A Name?

2011-06-13 Thread Carlos Ferreira
While I agree that some of the discussion on the denomination of software is
only a distraction, I hope we are not collectively throwing the baby out
with the bath water. As far as I can perceive, Ubuntu and other distros are
in a weird position, trying to increase their mass appeal (have a look at
Mark Shuttleworth's recent call for 200 million users by 2015) while keeping
die-hard fans on board; the former require (supposedly) more
user-friendliness and more eye-candy (not to mention OEM contracts), while
the latter are into command-line love and the feel good factor associated
with fiddling your way through numerous work-arounds.

So, perhaps it is interesting to discuss whether or not names and other
idiosyncrasies of free software are important. After all, when I recently
suggested that my students (first year undergraduates) use a certain Firefox
plug-in to manage their references, I got asked in short succession what a
plug-in was, what a Firefox was, and why did I need a browser to access the
Internet at all...

That is a worrying state of affairs, even my 10 year old son is aware of
different browsers; well, I guess he may have a head start having me as a Dad,
and I may have made sure he understood after he came home from school on day
asking if we had the internet. He was looking for the big blue E, so he got
the full explanation of the fact that he had already been using the internet
from home for some time using Firefox or Opera - I won't carry on with the
explanation, I'm assuming we all understand on this list ;) I had the same
sort of conversation when he was looking for Word, then Excel and Powerpoint,
explaining about OpenOffice (it was pre LibreOffice which we have now migrated
to), Protext (ancient history!), etc.

That said, back when I did my degree I had to adjust my way of thinking
somewhat after spending the first lesson in the computing section of the course
pressing the keyboard and seeing what happened! This is going back to 1986, but
even so I was amazed that some of the students hadn't touched a computer
before, and it turned out that those from schools further north didn't have BBC
Micros or any other form of computer in their schools or colleges (or it they
did they'd never seen them). Still, my 'head start' also meant that instead of
having to book a computer in one of the labs to do coursework on I could work
at home on my trusty Amstrad CPC6128 with Protext on ROM and Turbo Pascal
transferred from 5 1/4 to 3 disks - happy days :)

No, they both require user-friendliness, it's just different sorts of
users.

The former require new-user friendliness where things are obvious,
the latter require traditional user-friendliness, where things are quick
and easy. The two tend to be quite exclusive in the general sense, hence
it being difficult to manage the expectations of both.

Unix (and, by ancestry, Linux) has long aimed to be good rather than
popular, and appreciated the fact that most users spend more time being
'normal' users than they do new users, so tends to pander to the former
rather than the latter. In fact, many things follow this trend (there
is nothing intuitive going on in the front of a car or around a sewing
machine for two examples).

I don't think anyone *likes* fiddling their way through workarounds,
they just appreciate the fact that the system allows them to work
around problems.

[ubuntu-uk] Which NVIDIA GPU for Natty?

2011-06-13 Thread Philip Newborough
Hello Peeps

I have a Dell Studio 540 system with integrated Intel i915(?) graphics
controller. The system works well, but I am wondering if it would
benefit from an upgrade? I am looking at purchasing an NVIDIA card,
but I am somewhat lost as to which one. I am not too bothered about it
being the best on the market, I am not a gamer, but I would like it to
perform well at HD media playback and possibly recording some
screencasts.

Any help with this would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Probably the Geforce 210, you can get one here for just under £24 plus
delivery from ebuyer.com:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/240886

(Also includes a Street Fighter 4 download voucher, although I expect
it's probably not much use, but you could always pass it on to someone
who has Windows and plays games).

It should be well supported with the proprietary NVidia driver and it
supports VDPAU for HD video acceleration in mplayer and MythTV.

Actually I didn't realise they were so cheap now, might pick one up for
the kids PC.

That one seems a bit over kill for a non-gamer. I could understand how
a gamer would want something like that though (or maybe an ATI card).

Rob's suggestion sounds good.

For the record, I'm not a gamer either, but use an NVIDIA 8600GT with
two monitors on a twinview set up. I had quite a few problems setting it
up, but eventually got it working with the proprietary drivers and a lot
of fiddling. I'm happy to give you a few pointers, but it may not be the
best choice for a straight forward set up. It seems other cards work
much easier out of the box. It does work well with HD media.

All the best,

I have tried the onboard Intel 4500MHD and it is generally fine when
playing back most HD content, either x264 or webm. Admittedly, the
video content is decoded by the CPU, so in that case it's a
combination of CPU + GPU.
For your specific onboard graphics card, I believe that you are on the
limits of what the hardware can do and what the current driver offers.
If you have Ubuntu 11.04, run
/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p
to verify the state of the driver you are using.

For the screencasts, a good graphics card is not a requirement. The
capturing of the frames is mostly a CPU task.

Therefore, you can get away with an entry level graphics card from
AMD/ATI or NVidia, especially if your budget is around £30-40.
Phoronix, http://www.phoronix.com/ does a good job benchmarking
graphics cards on Linux.

[ubuntu-uk] Further Decluttering

2011-06-13 Thread TT Mooney
Hi all --

I am getting rid of some surplus equipment from home, and rather than
fuss with Ebay, I thought perhaps someone on the list would be interested.

Current techie toys littering the flat include:

O2 Joggler (works, briefly used, still in box, replaced with Nook Color
Tablet for kitchen computing) £50

Powermat Wireless Charging Pad with 1 USB Charger (new in box, tradeshow
gift) Free

Nokia N800 Tablet (no PSU, but it takes the typical Nokia Phone type.
Comes with a whopping 128 MB MiniSD) Free

Sun Ultra 5 170 (complete but without OS or CD-ROM drive) Free

Sun Sparcstation 5 110 (complete without OS but with CD-ROM drive and
spare MB)

HP 715/100 XC (complete with AUI to 10bT, PS/2 to HP keyboard)

Free items can be purchased for the price of the first round at any
decent hostelry in W1 or NW8 should the buyer like. Pick up is preferred
to shipping -- I will not ship free items.

If you're interested, reply off-list. I would like to get rid of this
stuff in the next week.

There are some other odds and ends around the office -- a Sony 20 inch
CRT (great screen, but heavy as sin) and the like as well. I will post a
full list when there is a chance.

Kind regards,

[ubuntu-uk] On giving people Ubuntu to try.

2011-06-13 Thread Martin Houston

I have a couple of old Thinkpad T43s that a friend gave to me thinking
that he had killed them with a faulty USB device.

A bit of googling and a 'deep reset' restored them both to life much to
my friends consternation.

I offered them him back but was given permission to keep them :)

Neither laptop had an internal hard disk so they were ideal
experimenting grounds for working with various USB and net booting projects.

Something I found that works really well is a 2.5 (i.e. bus powered)
USB hard disk.

Linux installed onto a 250MB one of these is really quite usable, much
more so than a USB memory stick.

This is a route that you can use to get your friends to try out Linux
you lend to them, without having to go axeing that internal hard disk
incumbent just yet.

Things will get even more interesting when USB3 ports become common,
especially once motherboards can boot from them! USB3 connected hard
disks are faster even than eSATA and even cheap USB3 memory keys have
performance on the par with old PATA hard disks (but the small extra
advantage of zero seek time!).

Bootable CDs DVDs only go so far. Telling newbies that they need to be
patient because of the very slow seek times is not easy. It does not
create a very good impression.

Peoples first impressions of Windows are not of having to install it
from the media, so why should Linux have that disadvantage of first
impression?

One of the things we should be doing for others is 'Linux propagation' -
if you have a friend who wants to try Linux ask if they have a spare USB
hard disk (a smallish one would do!) or can risk the less than 50 quid
it costs to buy one.

We need to build some logical volume manager based system replication
procedures. That 250MB hard disk Linux started life on a memory stick
and using just lvm volume replication and expansion moved onto the USB
disk and then onto the internal hard disk of another laptop.

Having that complete bootable, golden copy of the OS is good insurance
even if you do move to the convenience and speed of internal disk in the
end.

[ubuntu-uk] from win32 to python?

2011-06-13 Thread andres
Hello,

This is a question mainly for developers. I think. It's really a
curiosity of mine and I have little say in the result of the project.

Someone I know is thinking of releasing his software. It's a program
that at it's core is written in Fortran but has the gui written in
win32. it has other open source programs attached to it as well. All
bundled up in a nice .exe installer.

He has gone through a lot of trouble of learning win32 and actually
programming the whole GUI. But this at the end means that linux users
have to run the program through wine. Would you consider this a complete
disadvantage and a deal breaker if you would want to create a community
around it and it's worth thinking about translating the GUI to
something like python? Or other more cross-platform compatible
languages? (I don't know if it runs in Mac for instance).

Or would this be a bit of reinventing the wheel?

It seems to make little difference for an end user as I've seen wine
programs in the software centre. Or would it be incredibly more
efficient if it's a native linux program?

Or would it be more of a question of knowing who your users are going to
be at the end of the day?

get to the statuses, but even here, there's little or no help to explain what

helpful to folks who already know what this means, but does the average

Still, if it's little effort and it is useful to some developers, I don't see
any reason not to include it. I think rather than tracking the transition of
all packages in Ubuntu, we should just track the CD packages, as outlined in
bug 788514.

Ubuntu live filesystem builds moved to live-build

2011-06-13 Thread Colin Watson
I've moved Ubuntu's live filesystem build process over from our original
custom shell script in livecd-rootfs to the newer live-build system from
Debian (formerly called live-helper). Thanks in particular to Daniel
Baumann for guidance and for speedy upstream patch integration, and to
LaMont Jones for deployment assistance.

This only affects Oneiric and later releases. Live filesystem builds
for previous releases will continue to use livecd-rootfs.

Developers who have not needed to modify livecd-rootfs in the past
should have no more need to modify it now than before; it still uses
tasks in much the same way to decide which packages should be installed.
However, people working on Ubuntu live filesystems will need to know how
the new build process is laid out. I needed to have somewhere to put
configuration anyway, so I repurposed the livecd-rootfs package for
that, using auto/* files along the lines of
http://live.debian.net/manual/en/html/managing-a-configuration.html. I
expect that the exact details may change here as we gain more experience
with live-build. Briefly, the current way to reproduce an Ubuntu live
filesystem build is to do this in a scratch directory:

  Once only:
$ mkdir -p auto
$ ln -sf /usr/share/livecd-rootfs/live-build/auto/* auto/

  Each time:
$ export PROJECT=ubuntu SUITE=oneiric ARCH=i386
$ sudo lb clean
$ lb config
$ sudo lb build

There were a handful of changes in ubiquity 2.7.6 to cope with slight
differences in manifest files and sources.list generation. These only
make a difference if you're producing installable live CDs.

If you are modifying the live build process for Ubuntu, please remember
that we are now working with an upstream codebase: the days of hacking a
couple of special-purpose lines into livecd-rootfs are over. While we
do have three outstanding patches against upstream right now, they have
all been submitted as Debian bug reports (if it's any guide, there were
seven outstanding when I started drafting this mail!), and my goal is,
if at all possible, to be using an unpatched version of live-build from
Debian by the time we release Oneiric. Instead of perpetrating
Ubuntu-specific hacks, please consider these alternatives:

 * live-build has lots and lots of options, and in many cases you can do
what you need by tweaking those.

 * Patch live-build to do what you need, send your patch as a Debian
bug, and engage in upstream discussion if necessary. Note that, if
need be, you can guard your code with [ ${LB_MODE} = ubuntu ].

 * If necessary, there are various hook script facilities that you can
use: for example, scripts in config/chroot_local-hooks/ are run in
the chroot near the end of the chroot build process. Try to keep
this to a minimum, though; I'm trying to avoid using hook scripts in
builds for Ubuntu proper, as it would be better for live-build to do
the right thing out of the box without the need for hooks. Right
now, the only hook script I'm using is one to remove icon-theme.cache
   from Kubuntu images.

If you have any questions about the Ubuntu integration here, please ask.

Cheers,

Just gimme the IP!

2011-06-13 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Howdy ubuntu-devel!

I'm seeing quite a bit of code duplication in scripts and packaging in
Ubuntu around the determination of IP addresses.

Most are permutations of 'ifconfig' or 'ip addr', and four to six
pipes through awk, grep, sed, and/or cut. Some others dig through
/proc. Some are buggy (ie, more than one ip address on the system,
foreign locale but does not set LC_ALL=C, etc). Many of them do their
job well enough, but I can't help but think there's some room for
improvement.

Here are a few I've found in some server packages:
  IP=`ifconfig  | grep 'inet addr:'| grep -v '127.0.0.1' | cut -d: -f2
| awk '{ print $1}'|head -n 1`
  MYIP=$(ifconfig eth0 | grep inet addr | awk -F: '{print $2}' |
awk '{print $1}')
addr_withprefix=$(ip addr show label $default_interface scope global
| awk '$1 == inet { print $2 }' | sed s:/.*::)

In the interest of consistency, I'm wondering if it would make sense
to create and maintain a stable, definitive utility somewhere in
Ubuntu's default seed to provide the system's ip address,
*succinctly*, quickly, and reliably.

I'd think it should:
 a) default to ipv4, but support a -6|--ipv6 option
 b) default to the interface providing the default route, but support
an optional interface parameter
 c) be very, very fast (ie, I looked at facter, but it's pretty slow)

I have what I think is a decent working implementation of the above at:
 * http://people.canonical.com/~kirkland/ipaddr

$ ipaddr
192.168.1.109

$ ipaddr virbr0
192.168.122.1

$ time ./ipaddr tap0
10.13.17.92
real0m0.011s

What do you think? Have you seen scripts or packaging in Ubuntu that
would benefit from a solid, recommended ip determination utility?
Where should it live? net-tools? iproute? Somewhere else?

I think the ifdata program in moreutils is a good start on this:

mingo:~ evan$ time ifdata -pa eth0
172.16.4.140

real0m0.008s
user0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s

It seems to have only the most basic of IPv6 support, and lacks the
ability to enumerate interfaces or default to the interface providing
the default route, but it's explicitly designed to cover the use case
of getting information about interfaces in shell scripts - it seems
like trying to enhance it to fill in the gaps would be a better plan
than adding more utilities.

Thanks David.

I was not aware that the apps are listed in priority order. That makes things
much easier to follow and track.
Will look at the PPA issue and have that sorted out.

Thanks again.

Hi Anthony,

First of all, welcome to the Ubuntu Translations community!

If you want to translate Ubuntu into Bemba, I'd recommend simply going
to

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+lang/bem

and starting from there.

The list is ordered by priority (most important applications at the
top), and roughly the first two pages contain the applications installed
by default in Ubuntu.

I'd recommend starting with some of the Ubuntu-specific applications, so
that you can get started easily and you can see the results straight
away.

You can try the following:

Unity:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/unity/+pots/unity/bem/+translate

Unity Applications Place:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/unity-place-applications/+pots/unity-place-applications/bem/+translate

Unity Files Place:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/unity-place-files/+pots/unity-place-files/bem/+translate

Unity 2D:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/unity-2d/+pots/unity-2d/bem/+translate

These are relatively short and quite visible, so they're a good place to
start.

You can then continue with all the indicator-* templates below the Unity
ones.

As you're translating more, you'll find other templates fo which the
ones above are dependant, and then you can take it from there.

Other translators on the list might have other suggestions as well.

Language packs
--

* Also if you're testing translations, remember to subscribe to
the language packs PPA to get weekly translation updates and
check your progress on a running system.
* You'll find the instructions on how to add the PPA on
this page:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-langpack/+archive/ppa

* Note that you'll have to make sure you've done all the 3 steps
under the Request language addition section to get a language
pack created for Bemba:
* https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/KnowledgeBase/StartingTeam#After

If you've got any questions, remember that we're here to help, so don't

  consigo mudar, via teclado

  Alguns aplicativos os atalhos são configurados neles próprios;

do LCD.

arquivo áudio no amarok ele começou a tocar.

 http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-release-464

 adorando.

me too.
programas no startup. Alguns ele tá iniciando duas vezes (ex. stardict)...

[Ubuntu-BR] Clonar partição de HD com Bad Blocks

2011-06-13 Thread Leonardo Medeiros
Buenas lista,

Eis a situação:

blocks?

Forte abraço a todos!

2011-06-13 Thread julio menezes
Pode tentar:

primeiro instalar o utilitario GNU  gddrescue e o testdisk

446=somente o boot
512= boot+tabela_de_particao.

dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/pendrive/mbr_boot_446.img    count=1 bs=446
dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/pendrive/mbr_partic512.img   count=1 bs=512

para restaurar so inverter o input file if= pelo output of=

ruins

# first, grab most of the error-free areas in a hurry:
ddrescue -n /dev/old_disk /dev/new_disk rescued.log

# then try to recover as much of the device areas as possible:
ddrescue -r 1 /dev/old_disk /dev/new_disk rescued.log

[Bug 350936] Re: Should shut down domains on system shutdown

2011-06-13 Thread Sebastian Marsching
The problem of shutting down the virtual machines consists of two parts:

If a init-script is used, libvirtd might be killed, before the shutdown
command has been sent to the virtual machines. If the pre-stop script in
the libvirt-bin upstart job is used or a new upstart job starting on
stopping libvirt-bin is used, the computer is rebooted, the VMs are
killed by the sendsigs script. Even if the sendsigs script is modified
to not kill the VMs, the reboot or halt script might run before the
libvirt-bin upstart job has been stopped.

I use the following approach, which works quite well for me:
I added a libvirt-shutdown-domains upstart job, which is a task starting on
stopping libvirt-bin, thus running before libvirt-bin is stopped. This makes
sure that libvirt-bin is not stopped, before the VMs are shutdown. In fact, I
also included a runlevel check in the libvirt-shutdown-domains script, so that
the VMs are only shutdown, when libvirtd is stopped because of a runlevel
change. This allows for libvirtd to be restarted (e.g. when libvirt-bin is
upgraded) without having to shutdown all VMs.
I also added a init-script running before the sendsigs script, which waits for
libvirt-bin to be stopped (or a timeout, whichever occurs first). Thus,
sendsigs will not kill VMs and the machine will not be rebooted or powered off,
before the VMs have been stopped.

The scripts I wrote for this can be found at
http://sebastian.marsching.com/wiki/Linux/KVM#Shutdown_virtual_machines_on_host_system_shutdown
and some more explanations can be found at
http://sebastian.marsching.com/blog/archives/112-KVM-and-Graceful-
Shutdown-on-Ubuntu.html.

The solution I created is not perfect though because of two issues:
1. The python-libvirt package is needed, because I use a Python script to
shutdown the virtual machines. You might want to use a shell script using virsh
for that, thus eliminating this dependency.
2. The timeout, after which the shutdown will proceed anyway, is configured at
two different places: The init-script and the Python script called by the
upstart job. You might want to put both in the same place (e.g.
/etc/default/libvirt-bin).

2011-06-13 Thread Dave Walker
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: ntpdate
+ IMPACT: When attempting to sync to some ntp servers, a failure is
consistently produced.
+ FIXED: In oneiric and upstream 4.2.6p3-RC9 or 4.2.7p80
+ PATCH: debdiff attached.
+ REPRODUCE: On Natty run ntpdate against an NTP server where receive and
transmit timestamps are equal (Includes windows server 2003).

- ntpdate on natty (4.2.6p2@1.2194-o) fails to sync with server, while
- lucid server ntpdate works
+ Test: ntpdate xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

- Issue seems to be identical to
+ Expected failure is:
+ ntpdate[7149]: no server suitable for synchronization found

- http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1709

+ ntpdate[13959]: adjust time server 66.36.239.66 offset 0.144635 sec

- Bug was introduced in 4.2.6p2, should be fixed in 4.2.6p3 (see links)
-
- Please note also, that ntp.org is deprecating ntpdate (see
- http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Dev/DeprecatingNtpdate )).
-
- # lsb_release -rd
- Description:Ubuntu 11.04
- Release:11.04
- # apt-cache policy ntpdate
- ntpdate:
- Installed: 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5

[Bug 644489] Re: constantly changes /dev/disk/by-id/{scsi, wwn}-* LUN symlinks with multipathing

2011-06-13 Thread Peter Petrakis
We had another incident of this fault, but with an EMC Clariion CX4-120.
After eliminating LVM, and moving to a default MP config. It wasn't
until we removed the change rule to the 95-multipath.tools script
that the udev error messages ceased. I'm convinced that this
approach for the boot scripts is broken now and requires additional
scrutiny.

I have just also tried an Android phone in debugging mode connecting via
USB to a Scientific 6.0 host. The results are consistent,
/dev/bus/usb/003/003: Operation not permitted repeated in guest log
and no sign of device in guest.

[Bug 488696] Re: syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ]

2011-06-13 Thread Whit Blauvelt
Why is that a year after the fix was released (adding the nnswitch.conf
line works for me on Ubuntu Server 10.10), there is no updated package
with the fix for Ubuntu 10.10? 11.04 does not appear to need the fix,
despite that line being added. But 11.04 does. Shouldn't it have been
pushed out?

[Bug 796750] [NEW] apache2 startup fails with missing log directory

2011-06-13 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

If $APACHE_LOG_DIR (as defined in /etc/apache2/envvars), server startup
fails.

This situation is extremely common on a host that has a root filesystem
SSD. In this case, /var/log may be put on a ramdisk that is created on
each boot.

It would be helpful if the apache initscript createad the log directory
if needed.

SYSTEM: Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64)
PACKAGE: apache2.2-common 2.2.17-1ubuntu1

[Bug 796854] Re: euca-bundle-vol fails on when running tune_cmd

2011-06-13 Thread Adam Gandelman
Syntax error in patch debian/patches/bundle-vol-copy-fs-info.patch.
Error was carried over into patch 413-lp771498-bundle-vol-fix-xfs-
bundle.patch, which causes the syntax error to trigger during bundling
of FS's other than XFS.

Debdiff attached to fix.
