Thorsten, I updated the Lubuntu spec with modified content from Xubuntu. ( look @ the Inspiration :- ) Mario - we could use your help in adding words to the spec which will assist artists as they craft submissions. The pictograms you have explored for the Artwork logo reflect that work - is there something you could borrow from that? What do you think about writing a blog post about how to use OpenShot? Perhaps we could work on a mood board for the video together and then you could include that in the blog post by way of setting out a challenge for people? There could be a visual and a sound mood board. I really like what PiTiVi has accomplished to date but improvements lag behind other products such as OpenShot and Kdenlive. IMO Ubuntu needs a robust video editor targeted to not professionally trained individuals. Without a doubt Artwork and criticism are like oil and vintager. Without critique there is no opportunity for improvement; too much criticism kills creativity. It may sound like a no win situation, but it's not. The secret is to acknowledge the effort even if you disagree with the result. From the mentor's perspective this works as it affirms regardless of the result, it took time and energy to create it. Acknowledging this first frames the rest. Phrasing comments favorably by stating what you liked will make comments for improvement more palatable. Making reference of an example is a great learning opportunity. From the contributor's perspective this works as it affirms the fact it took time and energy to critique and comment on your work. Accept this as a positive even if the words are not what you were hoping to hear. Accept the fact the author is simply offering their point of view based on the information available. Why is this important? Posting submissions on this team should be viewed as an opportunity and the success of the team is dependent on participation. Do not be afraid to contribute because your efforts may not be received favorably. There is no better place. When asked, please critique another members effort as I consider mentoring equally important. Perhaps you noticed the Lubuntu task on the project board! I would like to welcome Rafael, Mario, and Julien from the Lubuntu community to the team. The next item to be complete is the spec. We have two available for your consideration. IMO a modification of the Xubuntu spec would be a good start. For the most part these are Thorsten's handi-work and I am sure he and others from the team would be willing to assist. I decided to give the OpenShot video editor a test by remixing the Ubuntu promotional video to some music and adding intro and exit sequences. After changing the theme to be less MAC I was very comfortable with the interface and pleased with the power. The additional sequences were created in GIMP and Inkscape. Inkscape under Maverick has an annoying bug where the ruler markers do not display correctly. If you want to take a chance, :-) an updated version may be loaded which fixed this issue for me. Hello Everyone, I am pleased to announce comments received off-line in reference to the Artwork Team Logo submissions are very positive and thank you. However as the clock ticks down on this task (2010-12-01) I would like to challenge the Team to think out of the box. To quote Paul Rand ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Rand ) ... If, in the business of communications, “image is king,” the essence of this image, the logo, is a jewel in its crown. Here’s what a logo is and does: A logo is a flag, a signature, an escutcheon. A logo doesn’t sell (directly), it identifies. A logo is rarely a description of a business. A logo derives its meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around. A logo is less important than the product it signifies; what it means is more important than what it looks like. In summary, it symbolizes who we are. This team supports Ubuntu, but more importantly it supports the greater community and the greater community does not have the resources available to Ubuntu. The attempt of the first palette is to simply box in the colors used by the GTK theme or colors of the community ( viz. Orange = Ubuntu ). The inspirational image is to provide a greater breathe to the palette. I am transparent to the light Ubuntu design concept. :-) If it doesn't make sense to the Edubuntu community then let's drop it. If I remember correctly, there was a thread some time back where many members indicated creating wallpapers was their interest. [ubuntu-art] Need Help with Wallpaper Spec
Hello Everyone,
This is very exciting! We have requests to create submissions for the
default wallpaper for Edubuntu and Xubuntu. At this point in time it makes
sense IMO to create a spec which will assist artists prepare great
submissions.
Here are the bullet points that come to my mind.
* Single image for all resolutions ( viz. aspect ratio independent )
* png file format
* 1900 x 1200 dimensions { ? }
* CC license
* Suggested palette
* Theming suggestions
I feel like I am missing things.

David, The desire of the Ubuntu community is to assist the LibreOffice community as best as we can. The negative comments expressed by some do not represent the community at large. Although frustrating to some, in the world of open source you do the best you can with the resources available. Surprisingly it works out very well. :-) If the desire of the LibreOffice community is to engage artistic submissions as a contest I am willing to offer my submissions and encourage others to do the same. The spec on the wiki is draft waiting your review and comment and as I stated earlier to your list, folks will need direction on how to post submissions. The desired tool is your call. For the members who participate on this team may I remind you that your actions are to always reflect the Ubuntu code of conduct and to represent the community in the best possible manner. We must all realize and accept the team is greater than sum of its members and if it is working correctly any team member may step out or step in without causing harm to the whole. In summary there are no bounties to be paid other than personal satisfaction and recognition for your contributions. In my opinion the current icon ( http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Unity_Logo.svg) is too plain. Actually, the more I look at it, the more I like it, but the first impression is dreadful. The logos proposed in this thread might me not enough symbolic. I'd prefer a simple and symbolic logo, like the one Ubuntu has now. A fierce competition between Unity and GNOME Shell will start very soon and a good logo will positively influence Unity adoption. Hey Martin,
Thanks for the quick response. The problem as I see it is we need something
now and we need something better as soon as possible. AFAIK the Wiki is the
only tool we can use now.
Admittedly it suffers from performance issues and others but these need to
be fixed and I have submitted bug reports.
I am transparent to the final solution but from a support perspective I
suggest we adopt something similar to what is being used elsewhere ( such as
ask.ubuntu ).
My dream is we can work on process improvements and technology improvements
at the same time and the goal of light is to improve process. :)
In your opinion what would be a good repository for submissions now ( wiki,
flickr, foopics ) ?

You can see this sort of project on the dA group where we don't instruct or organise art to be made using ubuntu, we just passively let people contribute to the galleries which have a simple and light framework of rules. 2) Structured and focused projects. You'll need time limits, methods of contribution which are split up effectively into chunks, you need some education and most importantly you'll need about 3 people who will contribute the majority of the work. You'll get about 100 people contribution 45% in drabs, but they won't do anything without that %55 from the dedicated few. These are just some thoughts based on my own experiences with communities. I confirmed this today with a fresh install of Lucid where everything was Ok. With no other changes and after the standard post install update the bug is visible. New audience - I was pleasantly surprised to see this page linked to the installation of the community-themes package using the Software Center. IMO this is spot on! My vision of the page is informative to the user who is interested in installing the package (viz. new requirement). At the end of the page I envision a short walk through of the installation process targeted toward the new user. Issues: - What is the desired image sized of the screen shot? IMO one is enough. - Is the general format Ok? I removed the Artwork banner as it did not seem to fit. - The logo is my attempt to blend with the new Ubuntu look (e.g. fish) assuming the appearance of the wiki will not change. Other ideas are welcomed. If this designed is agreed, I hope the respective authors will supply screen shots and text. Otherwise I will do the best I can. : ) My desire is to have this complete and ready by the release candidate. It appears there are two items causing concern with this team. The first – the window control buttons are now located in the upper left hand quadrant of the window frame. The second - the order of the buttons has changed. There is plenty of data to support locating the buttons in the upper left corner or upper right corner of the window frame. Which is better? I do not know but my assumption is folks do not choose an OS based on the placement of the window frame controls. If that were true Mac OS or MS Windows would be different. My belief is this decision was not made by the flip of a coin, the toss of a dart, or the personal preference of any single individual. I believe the concept was discussed, debated, and evaluated as to adding value to Ubuntu as it exists today and what it will become tomorrow. As to the order of the buttons, the same arguments apply. My suggestion is let’s not be too quick to judge and give it a try. I see a work-a-around is already in place for those who feel strongly the placement is incorrect. In my opinion the community should be willing to take reasonable risks to advance the user computing experience and stand ready to accept the challenges when the bar is raised. The number of comments offered on this subject stands as evidence to the strength of the community as everyone who participates takes pride in what the final solution becomes. Maybe the communication wasn't as good as it could have been but folks are busy and things will be missed. In some circumstances there is no right or wrong - just different. Lucid will be a success and that success is something we can all be proud of as I believe it will set the standard for all future releases. In some ways how can it? The image can be cropped, scaled down, or scaled up but not changed. Your GIMP Inkscape templates highlight the issue clearly but I don't want to be constrained to the least common denominator of image space. I am not advocating creating a wallpaper for each image size, but a single wallpaper for each aspect ratio or at least the most common ones. I believe an image scaled to 1920x1200 will “zoom” to the other 8:5 dimensions correctly (i.e. 1680x1050, 1440x900, 1280x800). Assuming this adds value, will Gnome support it? I use Flickr and for the most part I am happy with how it works. I discovered large images are cropped to 1024x768 and this may be a problem if we are going to use Flickr for wallpaper submissions (2650x1920). I assume this restriction is removed if you purchase a pro subscription. Although $24.95 is not a lot of money it raises all kinds of physiological questions about open source, free, community support, etc. Some may question why the wiki is not good enough. I think something like a DeviantArt group (if they exist? Inkscape used them for their splash screen contests) should be set up alongside the Flickr group, so we don't lose the ability to quickly mark a photo on flickr as suitable, but also don't lower the barrier of entry. I've discussed using deviantArt for some ubuntu community work with them directly and they asked for a large amount of money to do it ;( - -- Ken Perhaps Yahoo would be willing to support open source by relaxing the file size restriction for communities like Ubuntu. A request like this would probably be better received if made by Canonical but I am willing to give them a shout if you prefer. Just tried to install some extensions with OpenOffice and running on (9.10). Using the OpenOffice tool (which takes you to their site) I am only able to download the extension to disk. In other versions of OOO I was presented more choices.
