My screen (sometimes) looks like this, when i boot with verbose usplash. I still got this with the current kernel. Sometimes my system boots without any usplash at all, when i boot without quiet. I have the same issue with Kubuntu I run 1280x800 widescreen my hardware is Lenovo T61 Kubuntu Intrepid 64bit Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 / 2 GHz, 2 GB DDR II SDRAM - 667 MHz, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M PCI Express, Wireless 3945ABG I have to remove the quiet splash to boot, I sometimes get red white stripes sometimes I get the black screen of death! When I get the black screen I have to hard reset the PC as it is totally locked up I cant alt + F2 etc to get to a console. I can send any logs if you want. I think I've FINALLY found a answer!!! I have been following bug#246269 the post(s) #47 by captn #62 by chris_c seems to have fixed the problem. Prior to this I tried both -5 -6 kernels had soild BIOS warnings until desktop. I had noted captn's fix, but it had not worked until I used 1024x768p-60 that chris_c had used. Looks like I needed to fully spec the settings to make it all work again. I have tried it with quiet splash first it worked the first time in quite a whileI am now going to bite the bullet try it with just splash to see if it still works. Well---positive negative answersI can't get the old behavior-- asking for splash instead of quiet splash just gives a text display --not the old usplash with text below that I would really want to see, but at least I have had usplash two times in a row for the first time in months. I followed the steps noted above--also, I made sure that my /etc/usplash.conf also was set to 1024x768--ran update-initramfs -u after all changes were made. I would like to know if a more elegant way could be found to fix this problem, but at least it seems to work right now. OK--downloaded/ran the LiveCD Beta--still having the problem--usplash had vertical red/white-green/black bars--shutdown was a solid BIOS warning--I had to power-off the computer. As I have reported in another report--I am beginning to think this is a problem with wide-screen monitors usplash...Native resolution on my Hanns-G 28 monitor is 1920x1200. I have installed the new motherboard still have the same problem, so I think that a BIOS problem is out of the picture. I have also changed to SLI--using two BFG 8600 GT/OC cards the nVidia 177 driver. Dean Loros : I reverted your mass duplicate job for bug 243682. Please avoid marking a bug as a duplicate when it is marked as fix released, was targeted, has a lot of duplicates and that does not exactly describe the same bug. Think about all the people who are subscribed to that bug and for who it is now fixed and don't forget that it will in the end make things more confuse. We should avoid false duplicates since it's more harmful than having potential duplicates. The more important is that you keep this bug report updated. BTW, I have I nvidia 8300 and a lot of people have nvidia cards, but don't have the beep problem, so it's probably somewhere else.. Can you install intrepid beta that is due october 2th and give feedback? Very well--I still think that several of the other bugreports have a bearing on this problem--but--shrug--I will do as asked--If you had read some of my other comments in those other bugs you would know that I intend to download/install the upcoming beta for testing. Also, I commented that it could be a problem with the monitor I am using (Hanns-G 28 wide-screen with a native resolution of 1920x1200) a unhappy blend of the 8xxx series cards/nVidia driver usplash. My beep problem happens about 15% of the time--red/white green/black lines-30%--displaced progress bars-10% --text-only-40% a normal boot the remaining 5%. New information--I had been having mixed results for a while--sometimes normal splash screen (logo with text underneath it), alternating red /white-green/black stripes text only output with my boot line set to splash not quiet splash. This stopped with the grub update of Sept 2nd. Now with splash (and v86d installed) I get bios warning from the time Usplash starts to to whenever I can't stand the noise anymore--this will stay up to including loaded desktop--If I change back to quiet splash, I get the same as I did before with splash only. Currently booting with splash, not quiet splash to keep up as to when a update might correct this problem. Update: running the current Usplash the .3 kernel-I have at times the red/white green/white--nothing but black---text only sometimes a normal boot with the splash--sometimes splash with colored text below. Happens without any good reason. This is very hard to reproduce--It is still happening after a fresh install new /home folder--I retained nothing from my prior Intrepid install installed to a different drive from the install that I was having the original problems with. When the warnings start is 1-2sec after I get the first text identifying the kernel--Usplash will try to start then goto a text-only display whilst I get loud warns. I do not believe that gfxboot is causing the problem?--all problems start after Usplash starts (but I will note that grub-gfxboot uses 0.97-5 instead of the current 0.97-29. Is there any thoughts towards using gfxboot as standard?). If you wish--I will install the current grub for a test. Thanks again for these informations! Two really important logs would still be needed if you can attach them after reproducing the bug : dmesg dmesg.log sudo lspci -nnvv lspci-nnvv.log I don't know if gfxboot can be the cause of this problem but if you have time to test it, don't hesitate to do so. If I was you, I would not test grub2 because it's not completely stable and I really doubt that current grub version is causing the issues you have. The ht=on is a remainder from a Hyperthreading cpu--I need to edit that out. Yes, I'm using Ubuntu--the grub-gfxboot came from Debian it modified the update-grub in /user--I still need to change that, but I hand change my menu.lst to Hardy/Ibex, etc anyway ;) I'll test without quiet splash next--about 4/5hrs from now. Cleaned up my menu.lst /sbin/update-grub (removed ht=on changed the default naming in update-grub). Rebooted with no quiet or splash-- normal text-only boot--no problems. tested my /dev/sdc---no badblocks. reedited the menu.lst for splash got a display I have not seen for quite a while (Edgy development)--Vertical alternating bands of red/white green/black--but no bios warnings ;). Sure--I had a bad event last night--I had turned splash back on --had several boot/reboots that worked as expected, then had a very bad one -bios warnings on reboot--followed by a boot that was solid warnings with a damaged / partition that required a manual fsck to fix it...as you might guess I went back to quiet splash. The weird part is that with quiet splash there are no problems.drive in question is 3 months old---installed during hardy. Can you boot in recovery mode and launch sudo badblocks -sv /dev/sda (or /dev/hda, /dev/sdb, /dev/hdb, depending of your hardware). You can list all physical hard drive of your computer with sudo fdisk -l to know what to use between /dev/sda or /dev/hda . OK--tested my 160G Samsung SATAII my 250G Western Digital SATAII-- /dev/sda /dev/sdb. I did not test a drive I just bought that holds my Hardy backup install the /home(s) for both the Ibex installs (it's 400G--3 weeks old a Western Digital also--/dev/sdc--was running well before this came about). Tests show both SDA SDB with zero bad blocks. As I was saying before--this only happens if I try to run splash instead of quiet splash--A quiet splash reboot is without event. Thanks for the verification. If you have time for it, it would be still appropriate to check the last drive with badblocks. Both new and very old hard drives are vulnerable to cluster damages. From now on, can you look if the problem can be reproduced is you remove both splash and quiet from the boot line? It would also be important to know if the BIOS error messages appears before or after the GRUB menu. If before, this is BIOS error messages, nothing to do with ubuntu, linux or splash. If this is after GRUB, this is linux kernel error messages concerning BIOS. quiet might only hide these error messages but not cause them.
