[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2010-01-20 Thread Eric Lorenz
SUCCESS!

Thank you for all being paitent with me...it appears that my failure to
read the minucha (sp?) was my downfall. Early on in the notes on this
bug, people talked about shutting down and restarting as opposed to re-
booting. Apparently what my eyes were glossing over was the part about
having to remove the battery, as well as powering down...insert
sheepish, emberrassed look here. I was reading through the notes ONE
more time tonight to see if I could catch anything else...and I found
that. Did it, and all is well again.

Thanks!

Eric

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2010-01-13 Thread Eric Lorenz
I have tried starting off of the LiveCD and same- no sound at all. I am
a little unclear as to what you are describing...would that be-

1. Log Out
2. go into a terminal session
3. issue 'alsa force-reload'

or do i have to explicitly issue 'kill pulseaudio'

I see that the status has again been changed to 'fix released'. To be
honest, this has been frustrating. It seems that this issue has affect
several different versions of Ubuntu, and many different laptop models.
There have also been differing fixes for this. Everything I have tried
has not worked. The only other possibility I can see is that somehow my
internal sound module on the T43 somehow got switched 'off', but I have
been in the BIOS several times and cannot find a switch for it anywhere.

I hope that somehow I have not broken my sound card permanently...as I
need it for what I do. Bottom line is, the issue is not fixed for me, I
hope I can find a solution soon- not sure what else to do at this point.
Thanks for your help.

Lari,

Thanks for the help...I did (before I saw your reply) do the 9.10
upgrade last night, no change in the sound situation. I'll take a look
at some of the other bug reports, and see if anything there can help. If
not, I guess I'll have to just live with it for now until I have the
time to backup, reformat and start again from scratch. sigh.

Thanks,

One more bug to check for workarounds:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/270593

logging out, (killing pulse-audio) followed by alsa force-reload
re-instates sound.

I'd also try suspend/resume by starting Ubuntu 9.10 from the liveCD
(installation cd). That's how you can check if some config file from
older releases causes the problem. I previously had that problem but I
cannot remember how I fixed the problem (reinstalling acpid ,
acpi-support, alsa-base or something like that).

I tried adding the line you mentioned...it had no effect after
rebooting.

When I opened the file...it was empty until I added this line...could
that be right?

The only thing I have not done yet is trying the 'kernel switch'...I am
not sure if I need to go there, and I am nervous about doing that as I
am afraid I'll break something else that's working?

(Yes, I am relatively new to Linux, and this is the first time I have
taken my laptop completely over to Ubuntu. I develop the website for our
church, and I need to have audio capability as I work with audio files
on the site. If I can't get this to work, this could be a deal-breaker!)

Try workarounds in these bug reports:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/292129
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/202089

or if you can, try upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 ( instructions:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading ) (I think I didn't have any
sound problems after upgrading to 9.10, I have a thinkpad T500 though).

you might find some advices on the http://www.thinkwiki.org site too.

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated
version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron
Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ .
Please note that you can only test Suspend (Suspend to RAM) from the
LiveCD, in order to test Hibernate (Suspend to Disk) you'll have to
install. If you you have a free partition or something and can install,
please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your
results. General information regarding the release can also be found
here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . Thanks!

This will be retargeted towards the Hardy kernel once it is released.
I've tagged this as hardy-kernel-candidate so that we make sure to
retarget this report once the new release is out. However against the
linux-source-2.6.22 package this is being marked as Won't Fix as it
does not meet the criteria for a stable release update. To learn more
about the stable release update process please refer to

The fix:

But it was worth trying, for installing a new kernel, which did solve the issue

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-07-15 Thread simon H. Rasmussen
I run Feisty on a T42.
I have the problem as diagnosed here:

resume_from_disk = no sound
resume_from_RAM = sound
restart = no change (if I had (no)sound before I would have (no)sound after)

and as André Rüdiger described:
When I plug in/out the AC the computer does a beep.
While the beep is played (ca 1 sec) the sound works.

The fix changing HIBERNATE_MODE=shutdown to HIBERNATE_MODE=platform in
/etc/default/acpi-support worked very well. I don't know if it possibly
could introduce other bugs or if it's a true fix.

And thank you all for great input and the fix of course.

Re: [Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-06-26 Thread Mikele
weird, shmi85, on my T60 HIBERNATE_MODE=platform does the trick, and
many other success stories come from thinkpad owners.

first, I would try the unpatched kernel, for which Guilherme Salgado has
built a deb package (link above in this thread): download
http://rookery.ubuntu.com/~kyle/kernels/salgado/2007-04-25/linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic_2.6.20-15.28_i386.deb

go to the download location in the shell, and issue the command
$ sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic_2.6.20-15.28_i386.deb

pretty easy, thanks to Guilherme.

since you state thate your sound problem are not fixed by a hard
shutdown, I would also check if the settings of the sound card are
screwed up (no sound could come from a muted channel, and hiss from a
feedback due to the microphone input too loud and not muted).

just issue
$ sudo alsamixer

play around with the levels and see if anything changes.

cheers

2007-06-24 Thread Chris Hollenbeck
Confirm on a Thinkpad T42, kernel 2.6.20-16-generic on Feisty -
hibernating the system and then resuming results in a loss of sound.
This is still the case after rebooting. If I shut it down, and start it
back up, it works fine. I tested the HIBERNATE_MODE=platform change
that others have suggested, and this seems to fix the problem.

Also confirming this bug for Thinkpad R52 running Fiesty, kernel
2.6.20.16. Hibernate and Suspend both killed the sound; restarting did

worked without additional driver download. The HIBERNATE_MODE=platform
seemed to do the trick. Sound is now working after Hibernate, mp3, ogg,
system sound and embedded video in browser.

2007-06-10 Thread Eddie
Can confirm this on a IBM Thinkpad X41 (not tablet). After hibernate,
sound does not work. Does not come back after a soft reset - requires a
hard power off and power on again to have sound. Suspending and resuming
does not seem to affect sound (will check), along with a suspend/resume
straight after hibernation to see if that restores sound, as some have
reported. This is on the latest Feisty, 32 bit. I get no sound happens
with or without headphones.

2007-06-02 Thread ercan
I'd like to share the results of the trials to solve this problem on my Ubuntu
Feisty 2.6.20-16-generic, running on my HP nx8220 Laptop. I have the same
problem, no sound after hibernate. A soft restart solves the problem though, no
battery unplug needed, but still annoying.
Changing HIBERNATE_MODE=platform did not help.
Then I installed the patch (
http://rookery.ubuntu.com/~kyle/kernels/salgado/2007-04-25/ ) without reverting
the change on HIBERNATE_MODE. Did not help.
Then I changed HIBERNATE_MODE back to shutdown. It did not help either.

I actually want to deinstall this kernel patch, is there a way to do
that? Because after installing it, error messages flow on my screen
during the hibernation process, saying something about semaphores ( I
cant read well, they flow very fast) The hibernation completes
successfully though. But I am worried about the error messages.

BTW, my HP does not wake up after suspend (suspend to RAM), but I think
that's another issue.

Cheers,
Ercan

may indicate an underlying problem, or it could just be nothing.

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-05-26 Thread frotz
This problem manifests in a Thinkpad T42 running Feisty. I noticed a
new package named linux-mages-2.6.20-16-386 and thought this would be
an official substitute for the adhoc one at
http://rookery.ubuntu.com/~kyle/kernels/salgado/2007-04-25/. Doing
nothing else, this does not fix the problem. I then opened
/etc/defaults/acpi-support and made sure that HIBERNATE_MODE is set to
platform.

While trying to track this bug down, I changed the T42's BIOS settings
to emit a beep whenever the keyboard volume buttons are pressed. This
beep normally sounds quite ordinary. When the bug is active, this beep
sounds like ZUP as if it's being choked halfway through.

That's correct; the bug has been fixed upstream, but I didn't have the time

I then shutdown the PC and booted Ubuntu Feisty and e presto the sound

I am still unsure about what caused all the problems but for now it
seems to work again.

My laptop is Asus Z71V . The audio device is 00:1b.0 Audio device:
Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 04). I also have the sound problem after resume.
Backlight control doesn't work either after resuming from hibernation.

The kernel http://rookery.ubuntu.com/~kyle/kernels/salgado/2007-04-25/ helps
when I have HIBERNATE_MODE=platform in /etc/default/acpi-support . The problem
is that the computer won't shutoff by itself in suspend (I have to press the
power button to shut it off).
After installing uswsusp and using shutdown method = platform in
/etc/uswsusp.conf , the sound problem went away . I had to edit
/etc/acpi/hibernate.sh in order to get uswsusp working (uswsusp doesn't
understand the -x and -y parameters in hibernate.sh).

btw. The patched kernel also made the Asus backlight control to work
after resume.

I have this problem on a thinkpad x31 with the following audio
chipset...

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM
(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

A full reboot is required to make sound work and sometimes that doesn't
even help. I am experiencing a similar issue to the above poster; when I
press the hardware volume buttons on my thinkpad, very short bursts of
sounds pop through.

I have tried the modified kernel above but it doesn't fix the issue.

It's a bit of a showstopper at the moment so I'm using a vanilla
compiled kernel but I'd really like to see this solved. Is there any
output I can include?

Sorry but I accidently posted the following to a duplicate:

I can also confirm this on my T42p running feisty. Only powerdown does
help. When I reboot into Feisty or Windows I still have no sound.

FWIW today I noticed something strange: When I plug in/out the AC the
computer does a beep. While the beep is played (ca 1 sec) the sound
works.

I hope this could give someone a clue of what is happening.

Thanks,

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-04-26 Thread Sergei Genchev
Un-patched kernel works! I have just installed Guilherme's kernel from
http://rookery.ubuntu.com/~kyle/kernels/salgado/2007-04-25/ and the
problem went away. Rafael (the patch author) may have been mistaken in
thinking that it cannot affect shutdown..

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-04-25 Thread Guilherme Salgado
The patch author (Rafael J. Wysocki) reports that doing a

# echo shutdown /sys/power/disk

before suspending should fix the problem, but my /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh
already does that and I only get sound after resuming with that patch
reverted.

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-04-25 Thread mjukis
My IBM X40 (Kubuntu, Fiesty) got its sound back after a suspend to RAM
when I ran:

# echo shutdown /sys/power/disk

Thanks for the tip.

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-04-24 Thread jpeach
I am running 2.6.20-15-generic (Feisty Fawn) on a Thinkpad T30 and I am
having the same problem. I hibernate the machine (suspend to disk).
When I power back up the sound does not work. If I restart the machine
it does not solve the problem. I actually have to shutdown and pull the
battery and AC power for it to work. I have not tried just shutting
down and then restarting.

[Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk

2007-04-24 Thread Ralf Doering
Yes, reverting the change in kernel/power/main.c introduced with commit
9185cfa92507d07ac787bc73d06c4eec7239 seems to fix this. If I
understand this correctly, switching off using platform mode instead
of shutdown does not work correctly at least on my Thinkpad T60. Maybe
there are some hardware or BIOS related problems involved, as I have to
*completely* remove power (including battery!) to bring back any sound.
Is someone with connection to LKML involved with this bugreport and
willing to report this issue upstream?

I've reported it on the linux-acpi mailing list [1] and to the patch's
author, but nobody replied so far.
