Thank you for your comments :) I'll make the small sizes later. About the branding, I agreed with you Cory. In this case, I just thought that the icon have the same style as system-monitor and utilities-terminal so add the logo. I'm trying to improve a bit the title bar in metacity. I have tried to make, about orange stripe at the top of title bar, a bit (bit... bit... bit...) more clear the stripe lower. [1] At the end of the installation, the installer will ask you if you want to install grub and if so where to place it. But if you wish to extend the use, don't install it on an external device (ie, accessed through USB). The speeds through USB (even 2.0) aren't as great as an internal HDD and that can cause major speed differences on a larger OS like *buntu. As long as you are experimenting with OS's like Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, and even Slax, the speeds are enough. Go to something larger, and the performance hit is noticable. As my need is to use a single installation in different machines. I think , I will not able to save any document or install any application in case of live CD/USB (please correct me, if I am wrong). Virtual Machine however is the only choice, but it needs virtual machine s/w installation in all the machines and will be comparative slow. I already tried Red hat 7, Fedora 8 , Ubuntu 7 and Kunbuntu 8 on Virtual Machine. But I want seperate OS, as system has to manage two OS in VMachine. Can you suggest any other flavor of linux, which will be quite fast and portable in external device (currently I have - celeron,core duo AMD athlon based systems). If you are using Live CD then you can save your documents in a USB drive. The only thing is you cant save the settings that you have made. If you use Virtual Machine or any other installed OS [USB] are H/W dependent. Using any pre installed OS Disk [USB] or VM is not a good choice if you want to run the same OS in Different H/W. I.e. If I am running hardy, and apt-get install foo where foo depends on bar, apt-get will install both foo and bar, marking bar as automatically installed. If I then apt-get remove foo both foo and bar get removed (as long as nothing else has been installed after foo that also uses bar). There might be a prompt to remove automatic packages, I can't remember exactly. However, if I don't remove foo, install intrepid and then do dpkg --set-selections /media/disk/hardy-packages.txt both foo and bar are marked as manually installed (you've just told apt-get to install bar directly since it's included in hardy-packages.txt). If you now apt-get remove foo only foo will get removed. apt-get and dpkg think you still want bar installed, even though nothing is currently using it. Look at the link I included above, and it only puts packages you manually installed into the list of packages passed to dpkg --set-selections. Hopefully this has cleared up any confusion. However, if you were using Windows, its partition formatter does not allow you to format FAT32 partitions that big, probably because MS want everyone to use NTFS (especially in the days when Linux could not access NTFS). Ah, this explains it. I didn't think technically there should be the 32GB limit, but Windows wouldn't let me make the partition larger. But you are limited to a max file size of 4 GB in FAT32. I have used NTFS partitions in Ubuntu (I was pleasantly surprised that they were automatically mount RW, when some Linux distros still could only mount them read-only), and not had a problem with them, but now I just format every new partition as ext3, as I no longer use Windows much, other than in a virtual machine. I find that Windows XP Pro in Virtual Box boots in about 14 seconds to the desktop, whereas on an older PC which still has WinXP Pro on it, it still takes a few minutes. In a virtual machine, it does not matter how the partitions are formatted. You probably don't want ext3 on a Flash drive. The sectors holding the journal will get hammered and fail quickly. I would agree with the others and format the new drive as ext3. You also get file permissions, etc., with ext3 which do not exist on NTFS or FAT32 partitions. I've had problems in the past with ext2/3 and permissions when moving the device between different Linux machines (actually all Ubuntu but not necessarily with the same username/uid setup). Of course, NTFS does have permissions :-) They're just far more complicated and, IMO, less useful than *nix type permissions. Of course, if this USB drive is quite old, then maybe the problem with mounting it in Ubuntu is down to hardware failure, or possibly just an imminent failure that Ubuntu is sensing and not wanting to make you over-confident about the drive's abilities, is not allowing you to mount it. It's brand new. I think the problems were caused by the proprietary formatting utility. I ended up nuking the partition and starting from scratch. I was mainly curious, and started this thread, because I wondered how to do the disk check/fix without a Windows machine about. Thanks for all your help everybody. Josh I attempted to sign up to Worc's LUG about three or four months ago, when their web site was up and running. I never received a reply, other than the server generated stuff, and have never seen any list activity from it. There are active LUG's within Worcestershire (Malvern) and close by (Gloucester) if you are at the right end of the county or are prepared to travel a bit. Both appear to be very welcoming although I have yet to find the time to attend any of the gatherings. It would be nice to see a county level LUG become active in Worcestershire if someone has the time to commit to it. I'm just not sure that with my current work commitments that I could do it justice, although the will is there so would be prepared to have a go at resurrecting it if there is enough interest from users in that area. In Dundee we have The Abertay Linux society (http://www.thelinuxsociety.org.uk) as mentioned in Linux Format issue 115 (page 14) alongside Edlug. Anybody got any experience of mobile broadband? I may be moving to rented accommodation shortly and don't know how long I'll be there, so the mobile broadband concept is tempting as it'll allow me to not worry about minimum contracts and so on with phone lines etc. How supported is it with Ubuntu? Is there a particular network that works well, are they all as easy as it comes or should I just forget it entirely and route through a Windows PC? The built-in 3G modem in my Dell was recognised under 8.10, and works perfectly. I am currently on a train going to the darkest parts of Kent and using a 'Three' dongle on my eeePC 701 running eeeBuntu. 3G works fine in Ubuntu 8.10. Although there is a know bug where you sometimes dont get DNS from your provider, but it's being worked on. All I do is disconnect and reconnect and it works normally. I have seen 'Three' dongles for sale as PAYG with a good amount of bandwidth included if you dont want a long contract. As 'Three' customer my dongle is only £5 a month for 1GB. More than enough mobile bandwidth. My 3G modem from '3' (a Huawei E220) worked straight away on my Acer Aspire One running Intrepid. I don't believe I even needed to change any config settings - they seemed to be pulled off the modem itself. A couple of warnings: - Credit on '3' modems expires after a month, so use it or lose it. I would suggest buying frequent smaller amounts, depending on potential usage - Ubuntu (or maybe my machine) can get confused in properly recognising the modem when plugged in if you have an active wireless connection. Sometimes I have to disable wireless completely and occasionally even have to reboot. The user interface of gnome-app-install is the one of an elaborated dialog and not the one of a full application which you would expect from a software library menu entry. Contributing usability expertise to ubuntu project
Hi I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction in terms of contact information or resources related to usability and the Ubuntu desktop. I want to start contributing my user experience expertise to the Ubuntu community. Currently I work for a user experience consultancy as a usability analyst, although my background is in software development. Although I will have to okay it with my employer, I would like to start working with different projects under the Ubuntu or Gnome umbrella. I have experience in using a wide variety of usability techniques, both in academic and commercial environments. So if anyone would like to point me in the way of contacts that would be great. Additionally, if any project developers would like me to collaborate with them, please let me know. Here the translator choose to use % instead of percent, which is perfectly legitimate. Indeed. This is one of 'false positives' so no need to worry about it. AFAIK, the search was really done by '%' sign. Is this really a blocking issue for generating language packs ? Do you have any example of an application crach due to this kind of mistake in his translation ? If this particular application uses above string in the form of fprintf(file, _(Sets the tone... 75 percent...)); introducing % would make the fprintf call see % e (space-padded %e specifier) which would make fprintf look for a floating point number as the next argument on the stack. Though, you should note that problems like these are application bugs, and should be reported as such. However, you can't tell unless you dive into code for the application itself. If this is still the case, the problem is not always because Rosetta translators *rather* use their own translations, but because they may not know any better. Liblo conflict
Hello, There is an annoying problem I am having at the moment with the OSC library. The new version in the repositories is called liblo0ldbl and (as far as I can tell) provides all the functionality that the old liblo0 used to. There are still some packages that require liblo0 and I have no way to install them as liblo0 conflicts with liblo0ldbl. The specific packages I'm talking about are fluxus (http://www.pawfal.org/index.php?page=FluxusPackages - the third ubuntu link provides the most recent packages) and a package Ardour 2.71 (http://www.getdeb.net/release/3647 ). Is there any way around this dependency, maybe using a dummy package to fill the liblo0 requirement or somthing? I managed to install fluxus using ' dpkg --ignore-dependencies=liblo0 ' but that creates a broken package and I can't upgrade or install anything else 'til I remove it. Tava com problemas em converter no formato x264. Apelei pro Hamacker e aí
ele deu a solução abaixo.
Fiz uma conversão como teste e um AVI de 215mb caiu para 80mb com legenda
embutida perfeito!!!
Ficou com extensão MP4, mas eu renomeei para AVI e funfou!
Incrível
Agora posso ter minhas séries num formato menor de espaço!!!

A única coisa que você não deve deixar de fazer de forma alguma é uma defrag na partição windows. a solução foi instalar o Ubuntu pelo Wubi, que, se não me engano, cria um arquivo dentro do Windows que funciona como se fosse uma segunda partição. O HD, entretanto, continua tendo somente uma. Sim é isso mesmo. Acontece que, num belo dia (ontem), o sistema parou de funcionar. Ao tentar dar o boot pelo HD, o sistema trava na mensagem Verifying DMI Pool Data... Hoje ele trouxe um Live CD e, embora tenha conseguido chegar à tela inicial do CD (aquela em que se pergunta se se deseja iniciar o Ubuntu do CD, se se deseja instalar, blá, blá, blá), o sistema não inicia. Como assim o sistema não inicia? Se selecionar a opção de inicializar pelo LiveCD o Ubuntu não carrega? Tentou fazer o que eu propus de tentar restaurar o Windows? Pq tá com cara de pau no gerenciador de boot que poderia ser resolvido dessa forma.. Você não consegue entrar no Setup da BIOS? É que na verdade não estou entendendo o seguinte: o seu amigo acha que o problema é no Ubuntu? Pq senão essa lista não vai poder te ajudar em muita coisa... -- Danilo G. Uma boa escola para se fazer um curso para o LPI é 4linux, alias foi ela quem trouxe esse certificado para o Brasil. A única coisa que tive que ajeitar foi o pacote de idiomas para funfar legal o pt-br em todas as aplicações. Um detalhe: Para utilizar a formatação ext4 tem que fazer o particionamento manual e escolher esta opção, pelo automático vai no padrão ext3, ok? Provavelmente o tocador [Totem] está exibindo a imagem corretamente, seu video é que não está fazendo o upscaling. Voce pode usar o mplayer, nas propriedades desse tocador voce pode ativar alguns filtros e também o driver de video. Eu uso gl2 numa placa nvidia e os resultados são excelentes. No script ubuntu perfeito voce pode instalar os codecs lindos e maravilhos e dentre uma seleção, os melhores tocadores incluindo para internet. Não, o script comporta-se como se você estivesse digitando os comandos e algumas vezes é requerida alguma interação com o usuário. Por exemplo onde o usuário precisa aceitar o contrato antes de prosseguir ou são exibidas informações se deve ou não substituir arquivos de nova versao, etc... Mesmo que eu tente esconder muitas dessas telas, vai haver gente para pedir para exibir, se eu exibir, gente pedindo para ocultar. É impossivel agradar a todos, mas exibir é muito bom para voce entender o que está se passando com aquelas toneladas de pacotes. Voce pode minimizar bastante isso se resolver usar o remastersys e criar um novo .iso a partir de toda instalalação que você já possui. Depois qualquer nova instalação usa esse novo disco. Eu vou fazer um curso preparatório pra LPI nesta semana, pois embora eu me considere auto-didata, estudar coisas maçantes sem acompanhamento é desistimulante, sem contar que passa muita coisa despercebida. Galera, eu tenho a seguinte estrutura. ADSL Bridge - PC - WLAN0 - Rede Funciona assim. Eu conecto o pc na net usando o modem em modo bridge. E conecto na rede via wi-fi onde tenho 2 notes, mais um pc e dois smartphones. O problema e que acabei de trocar o ubuntu 8.04 pelo 8.10 e nao consigo conectar a rede sem fio. Pois ele tem um botao de radio para selecionar a conexao ativa. Alguem sabe como eu faço para ativar as duas conexões simultaneamente? obrigado.. 2009/1/17 Marcio Novelli mnov...@gmail.com pessoal ja saiu a versão alpha 3 ubuntu 9.04 instalei com partição ext4 ficou um avião o boot nossa q exagero... no meu ficou praticamente a mesma coisa e o seu desligamento estão muito rápido tudo rápido o gnome veio 2.25.2 , kernel 2.6.28-4 , openoffice 3.01 , firefox 3.05 . tudo está rodando numa máquina processador intel , placa de som intel , video intel e rede realteck tudo onboard , placa mae intel rede sem fio intel tudo funcionou blz a instalação foi tranquilo . vale lembrar que foi instalado na versão em inglês... mesmo alpha-3 está super estável sem nenhum bug ainda !!! Uma coisa que não gostei foi a opção CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE vir desabilitado por padrão. Não houveram mudanças de apresentação, mas o simples tema dark padrão dá uma melhorada e tanto no aspecto das janelas, botões e seleção do menu. Aqui ja ocorreram vários, aí entra uma tela pedindo pra enviar os erros É o velho problema de algumas incompatibilidades... na minha máquina está rodando tudo, até agora nada de bugs. Poderia testar o Espeak para ver se ele fala alguma coisa? No Terminal, execute: espeak teste Precisamos saber onde está a falha do som, se é no Orca ou no sintetizador...
