Hi all, After reading through reviews and checking through the HCL and stock availability in stores, I bought a Linksys WRH54G wireless router and a WUSB54GC USB wireless adapter. The wireless adapter is fully supported out of the box - I plugged it in and it came up in Network Manager with the router's SSID, though I haven't yet tested WPA2. I'm still setting up the router. This is not a strictly Linux question, though. Current setup (modem is desktop's gateway): (Desktop:192.168.5.84) (Modem:192.168.5.1) Desired setup (router is everyone's gateway, modem is router's gateway): (Desktop:192.168.5.84) (Router:192.168.5.2) (Modem:192.168.5.1) (Other Machines)---^ (the indicate wired connection, everything else is wireless) Most guides on the net simply say plug in the cable from the modem into the WAN port. But I am not so sure. For one, I have turned off DHCP on the modem. If I try to select static IP as the type of Internet connection on the router, I am stuck at the gateway. The values I enter are: IP: 192.168.5.1/255.255.255.0 DNS: openDNS IPs What gateway should I enter? I am sure I'm getting something basic wrong. Configuring the WAN is the next major block for me. A quick look at the router's specifications tell me that it is a DSL router. Which means you are supposed to replace your current modem with this router. This router does not have ethernet WAN port. The four ports are LAN ports. So you can not put the modem on router's WAN side. On a side note, this router looks like decent choice for home based networking. Mehul and Onkar, The WRH54G has a dd-wrt firmware available for it - I checked on their site - http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=149761. I plan to use it after getting familiar with the stock firmware's usage. Though its not supported by others like OpenWRT, Tomato, etc. Also, WRH54G has a RJ-45 WAN port, not a telephone line-in port, like an ADSL modem/router. So I cannot replace my ADSL modem yet :-) . Bonjour! Depuis quelques mois, j'ai fait le grand saut dans Ubuntu 8.10, Bien sur, les premières connaissances ne furent pas sans grincements de dents, maintenant, j'avoue un certain confort dans ce système d'exploitation. Un petit problème banale m'écorche par contre... J'utilise un portable Compaq CQ-50 et je n'arrive pas à trouvé le bon clavier qui débarre les chiffres lorsque je met les majuscule(Caps Lock). Il s'agit probablement d'un mauvais agencement du clavier. Pour le changer, tu peux faire Système-Préférences : Onglet Agencement. Elle a un élève qui es mal voyant. Il lui à dit qu'il utilisait un logiciel pour les dictées et que la voix dans le jeu était la même que la sienne. Les chemins se croisent. C'est bien ça voix et il s'agit bien du jeu dont je vous ai parlez il y a une semaine ou deux. .3 Retenez bien cette date. J'ai vendu un premier ordinateur (usagé) avec Ubuntu comme système d'exploitation. Vos conseils m'ont beaucoup aidé à avoir de bon arguments. Même moi je suis plus convaincu que c'est une bonne solution pour mes clients. Je vais l'aider à s'inscrire à ubuntu-quebec. C'est intelligent, effectivement. a faisait longtemps que je n'avait pas vue la commande chown. Je vais en avoir besoin moi aussi. Des fois j'ai le mme problme de "propritaire". Encore moi... Pour ajouter à mes deux messages précédents, je vous livre la suite de mes découvertes, si ça peut en aider d'autres. chown gilbert:gilbert /home/gilbert n'était pas suffisant. UNe fois mon système rétabli et s'ouvrant sans erreur, j'ai constaté que je ne pouvais effacer certains fichiers inutiles dans mon répertoire home/gilbert. J'ai réalisé que les sous-répertoires ne m'appartenaient pas et que je devais également changer les permissions de tous les répertoires présents dans home/gilbert, puisque je les avais recréés en tant que root lors du déplacement de celui-ci vers une nouvelle partition. Ce n'était donc pas seulement les fichiers .dmrc et .ICEauthority qu'il fallait modifier. J'ai trouvé le moyen de corriger cette erreur en fouillant dans le bazar web. En faisant chown -R gilbert:gilbert /home/gilbert, je me suis assuré que tout redevenait sous ma propriété. L'option -R signifie exécuter de façon récursive, donc sur tout ce qui se trouve dans le répertoire spécifié, sous-répetoires inclus. The machine I am writing this on has been playing up for a long, long time and each time I switch on I wait in trepidation to see whether or not it will actually boot up. Usually it does but I have to accept that it is coming to the end of its life. I have a Windows XP machine, which I've never actually opened up. I propose to remove the master drive from the Linux machine on which Ubuntu is installed and insert it into the Windows one. It will then become the slave drive. What I would like to know is how to create a new MBR on the Windows machine as I shall wish it to boot up into Ubuntu for 95% of the time. Any advice/assistance will be gratefully accepted. Keith if your using your ubuntu on the machine 95% of the time I would set the ubuntu hd as the master. If you take a look at /boot/grub/menu.lst I believe there is an example for a windows boot option. If it's the old IDE then you'll possibly either have to change jumper settings on the drive (Master/Slave) or if you're lucky and have UDMA66/100/133 cables (the 80 wire/40 pin cables - if the PC is less than about 9 years old you may well have this type of cable) you could try setting both drives to cable select, it will then automatically sort out the Master/Slave combination. Grub can be configured to boot an OS from a separate hard drive. I did this when upgrading my hard drive, I put the old drive in on another SATA port and the new drive on the first SATA port. I then installed Ubuntu and configured Grub to boot Ubuntu from the old drive. Can't remember exactly what I put in the menu.lst at the moment as my machine isn't working (dead motherboard) but it is possible. I have a machine with 2 SATA drives, Ubuntu on one and Windows on the other, which will boot into Ubuntu unless Esc is pressed at the start of booting. The additions to menu.lst must be recorded somewhere and I will try to find them. Also I don't think my current graphics card can handle a larger screen, it can only just cope with basic desktop effects! So I'll likely be needing a new graphics card too. Now I know this means going with ATI or nVidia, both of which have either rubbish open drivers, or dodgy evil closed ones. I've used nVidia before, and they seem to be less painful. However I again have no idea about which graphics cards are good value. It'd be great if there were any commercial cards with open drivers that'd be great. The closed source driver works fine on Ubuntu 8.10, but not under mythtv. The open source driver works fine on both, but is a bit slow. There are some audio/video sync problems when showing video. If I had to do it all again I'd go with nVidia. I recently built a new PC for the 'rents. I used a 20 samsung, which although attracting very good reviews was somewhat disappointing, with poor colours and the worst stand ever made. It's hooked up to an ultra cheap ATI X1550, which is using the non free drivers. It has been perfectly stable, with no lockups(x64), and has enough grunt to run the advanced effects at 1680*1050. 20/22 inches is probably around the sweet spot for prices at the moment, with decent monitors available below £120. 24 ones are brilliant, but the cost is still quite high- I paid £200 for my 24 Yuraku, although that was a PVA panel model. I was under the impression that the new ATI cards were getting free drivers written with help from ATI, but I am not sure of the completeness or working state of this. I am still of the opinion that this is a brilliant little machine :- Rob, You may remember replying to a post of mine last week about the Acer. I bought mine from a Tesco store for the same price as Tesco direct, although it is cheaper at amazon and play.com. It has 1 GB ram and a 120GB hard drive. I installed Ubuntu eee (which is v8.04) via usb stick and everything just worked. The only drawback is the volume of the sound, some people might want it louder. There is a workaround, but I understand v8.10, with a later version of alsa, will fix this so it's not a problem for me. Cheers, I have subsequently upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 with no problem. add buttons in Evolution
Hi all, is there a way to add additional buttons to the Evolution toolbar? I have a 16:9 screen and lots of space where I would like to put some additional buttons. Or is there a keyboard-shortcut command list? Translations with bad formatting strings now disabled
Hi all, This is about the msgids that were used as format strings, where some of the msgstrs had incompatible formatting directives, e.g. translating file not found as %s not found. We've just completed a full gettext check of all active Ubuntu releases. Any messages that failed gettext's format-string checks were disabled. In cases where the problem was only in a Launchpad-specific translation, we've reverted to the upstream translations. For Hardy, 1,780 messages were disabled and 239 ones from upstream re-enabled. In 26 cases the upstream message was different but also failed the check. For Intrepid, 1,520 messages were disabled and 376 ones from upstream re-enabled. In 30 cases the upstream message was different but also failed the check. For Jaunty, 1,506 messages were disabled and 299 ones from upstream enabled. In 26 cases the upstream message was different but also failed the check. The number of messages checked was about 2 million per Ubuntu release. These were the currently selected messages with the c-format flag (or equivalent for another language) enabled. Lately the Romanian team was using the Ubuntu language packs[1] to check them for errors and report them upstream[2]. Now, if Ubuntu language packs are clean I don't know how we can help the upstream projects. Just a simple text file pe language would be enough. I know that we could complete the translations and send them upstream. But , at least for Romania, the upstream developers are more responsive to error reports than translations update request. We will not know that our translation update also fixes some fatal po errors. I'm glad you asked. :-) Since the script had to run on our production database to disable messages, I didn't want to burden it with this. Instead, I can run the same script on a read-only copy of the database just to check for upstream cases. Something like that could serve not only the ubuntu studio community really well but the Linux Audio community as a whole. But the difference is quite thin nowadays. Ubuntu is really easy to install and work on. You don't need to compile kernels and do programming yourself to use the Ubuntu. Linux used to be like that a long time ago, but those times are long gone. There was long a discussion if Linux is ready for desktop use, and the time it has been ready has been now already couple of years and Ubuntu is getting on each release better and better. The 6 month release cycle is very rapid and things change for better at amazing rate. Jack patchbay
Hi, I understand the connection window in Jack just fine...I think. But, I don't grock the patchbay. Can't seem to get it to show connections except between system node and ardour node. Doesn't show connections between in outs. Add new and select snapshot and doesn't restore what I've wired in connections. What am I missing? I am thinking about upgrading my studio, and this time i would move from a Windows only environment to a mixed Linux/Windows one (sorry, i cannot drop windows, i have 15 years of music stored in proprietary, undocumented format, sigh :-). So, i have a couple of question: 1) Would Ubuntu Studio (or any Ubuntu, actually) works on a Core i7 processor ? When I first started with Linux in 1994, the only documentation available was a readme file. And before I became proficient with the fips utility, I did trash a few 20MB and 40MB hard drives. Kernel compile time on a 386SX was measured in DAYS and getting a serial modem to work involved duct tape, bailing wire and a rubber chicken! When it was easy to hack on to the internet (mostly human engineering a phone number userid and password from a university), I stumbled upon The Linux Documentation Project. For a noob, there is still a lot of good information therel. Some if it is a little dated, but sit down at that site with some coffee and read. I don't know about UBS specifically, but I do know Jazz guitarist and composer Carols Pino uses a lot of the same Linux audio utilities for his tracks. casos e nunca penso que sempre existe o reinventar a roda, só

como você enxerga os projetos.
E se pensarmos assim, ficaremos sempre usando algo que já existe e
nunca
renovaremos as perspectivas do que queremos e que sempre queremos
melhor
ou
com algo que falta naquele que já existe.
Entendi pouco do seu segundo parágrafo, eu também tenho problemas quando
escrevo exatamente como costumo falar.
Mas sobre reinventar a roda, digo o seguinte:
Temos 4 projetos livres de gerenciamento de hotel. Pelo menos um deles
deve
servir, e cabe ao Paulo testar e ver se atendem às necessidades dele.
Ele vai conhecer os projetos e vai ver um que melhor se adapta ao que
ele
quer. Pode até ser o projeto ideal!
Mas se faltar alguma coisa àquele projeto, essa animação e disposição
toda
para programar pode ser direcionada a melhorar este projeto.

Bem... pelo que já vi por aí existem muitos softwares de autonomos que começam mas nao terminam o projeto devido ao numero pequeno de interessados... Acho que no SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net) vc pode encontrar alguma coisa... Olá a todos, estou tentando encontrar certos materiais para criar uma iso bootável e customizada do ubuntu, mais especificamente, o kubuntu. Certos problemas que surgiram e não consegui encontrar resposta a) Ao fazer a imagem no pendrive para ser bootável, com um espaço na partição para persistência de dados, (caso o usuário salve uma configuração e ela fique salva), o kubuntu boota normalmente, mas se qualquer alteração no sistema for feita, como instalação de programas ou até mesmo mudar o wallpaper ele não boota mais. b) Alguém sabe alguma documentação (de alto até baixo nível) de como funciona o boot persistente pelo pendrive? FLuxo de chamadas e arquitetura, caso uma mudança tenha que ser feita em baixo nível? Obrigado desde já. Primeiro, use o File-Open do próprio mplayer, e note se por alí ele também demora os 30 segundos. Se continua demorando então é problema com o mplayer e suas configuracoes. Se abrir mais rápido é porque o problema é com o launcher do seu sistema, geralmente o nautilus. Danilo, o pessoal tem uma idéia, na verdade para mim, um mito, que para um projeto opensource dar certo é preciso de muitos desenvolvedores. Isso é um mito. É muito comum, e é claramente possível um projeto com apenas um desenvolvedor dar certo. Às vezes temos dois, mas se você der uma olhada existem vários projetos (não to falando grandes) que só tem um desenvolvedor, pelo menos principal, os outros só contribuem com uma coisinha o outra. Principalmente no começo dos projetos isso é muito comum. Como exemplos eu que me vêem a mente, posso citar aqui para você o avant window navigator, screenlets, kiba dock, gnome-do. É claro que alguns deles cresceram e agoram têm mais desenvolvedores, mas durante um bom tempo não foi assim. Uma parte importante que eu percebi, observando por aí, são os heavy users, eles meio que movimentam o projeto, além de dar ânimo aos desenvolvedores. Quando falo heavy users to falando usuários ativos, que usam o software, postam bugs, dão suporte, são meio que evangelistas (no bom sentido da palavra) do software e eventualmente disponibilizam patches que ajudam. Alguns desses heavy users acabam virando desenvolvedores. O Cd original do Ubuntu está cheio de falhas na acessibilidade, por isso o orca não fala na instalação. Também por este motivo que remasterizei um DVD fazendo todos os ajustes de acessibilidade. No caso específico do Vieira tudo leva a crer que a placa de som não foi detectada, por isso o Orca está mudo. Agora se ele escutou o som na abertura do Ubuntu, aí a possibilidade de erro pode estar no Orca ou até mesmo no sintetizador de voz. Bom dia! Sou usuário do Opensuse Gnome 11.1. Além de estar cada dia mais poderoso, o suporte ao português br, vem melhorando sempre mais. Na minha opinião, são poquissimas coisas que ainda não tem tradução ou, está meio a meio mas a grande maioria ta tudo ok! Da para baixar o o pt-br via o yast ou então baixar a imagem iso de linguagens.Via Live CD, esquece, é em inglês mesmo. Olá Pessoal, bom, imaginei que podemos resolver isto de uma forma simples, é claro se ambos estiverem interessados. Eu sou um cara novo de tudo mas tenho uma boa experiencia em programação .NET e sei alguma coisa de fiscal, podemos fazer assim se o Marcelo Aceitar é só o Edison falar o que é necessario noprograma que transmito os isso para o Marcelo comoserá feita a programação, eu adoraria ajudar na programação mas ainda não sei nada para linux, estou estudadndo um pouco de Delphi mas a Facu ta osso, e se alguem estiver afim de ajudar também. Pode sair um software pequeno qu não resolve lá o serviço inteiro mas o primeiro que pode evoluir com a ajuda da comunidade. Marcelo Silva, Você já penso em fazer alguma coisa voltada para Lojas de Material de Construção ou Mercado? É so uma dica pois sempre que vejo as maquinas nessas lojas vejo na sua maioria programas feitos em Clipper ou Cobol. Acho que a galera não ta querendo migrar devido ao valor da licença do Windows e com isso ficam com esses programas velhos trabalhando sem muita opção.
