You can append a '' (i.e. gnome-settings-daemon) to background the process and then it should continue running after the terminal window is closed. Alternatively, you can keep the terminal open, which might help you to track down whatever it is that's causing gnome-settings-daemon to crash, or see below does that mean the gnome-settings-daemon is not running, Yes. :) and should it be running all the time, Yes. :) and also, how can I get the Icon to remain, without having to keep the terminal open.. You can run it from the Run a command prompt via alt-F2, but the important point here is that you shouldn't need to - it should already be running. When 2GB RAM is installed, system components taking up 1GB or so of addresses has no effect, as there are 4GB of addresses in total, meaning 3GB of addresses are left available for the 2GB of RAM. Dave Hi, Sorry if I've caused confusion. I've not tested it with Ubuntu but a kernel running with PAE (Physical Address Extension) supported and enabled on a processor that supports PAE too will allow a user to have up to ~64GB of memory and the system will see and use all of that. The ~4GB limit is an historic limit for 32bit processors due to the memory addresses available to it... however see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension for more information on what PAE does to get around it. PAE is not needed with a 64 bit processor on 64bit implementation on your OS as the memory addresses available bring the limit up to if I remember correctly around 256TB... :o Hope that clarifies it, again sorry if I've caused confusion. Regards, Lee. Well, I installed 64 bit in the end. The first time didnt work, and had to abandon the install. The second time has worked, and so far, both windows and Ubuntu seem to be working. Suffice to say, I now have an error saying 'InstallArchives failed' with 141 updates in the Update manaer, and no way of updating, Anybody know why that should be? -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

On 06/03/11 18:38, J Fernyhough wrote: First, chill. Second, I was replying to Grant. Third, I assumed that you had a basic knowledge of how Ubuntu works. If you need immediate help you should use IRC; email by its very nature is non-realtime. If you must know I was washing my car after lunch while it was sunny. If you look at the errors you are getting it clearly shows you have errors in the dpkg database. You either have, or at some point had, a sources.list entry for an old version of VirtualBox. This could be in a couple of places, either as an entry in /etc/apt/sources.list or in a file in/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ - only you will be able to find it. If you have removed the entry then a $ sudo aptitude update should have updated the package lists and removed references to the old files - I assumed you had already done this and so moved on to the next (rather more drastic) step. This I have used several times previously to recover inconsistencies in dpkg, for example after an unexpected shutdown. It's not nice, as I have to reinstall my packages again, but the system stays running (and $ sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop pulls in most packages anyway, the others can be pulled by a script by looking at /usr/share/doc). The problem with manually clearing /var/lib/dpkg is that the errors it generates look scary, and trying to fix this via email (which is slow) is less than ideal. Again, IRC would be better. However, seeing as the error first showed in /var/lib/dpkg/status, removing it will narrow down the error again. As you've posted already, /var/lib/dpkg/available also shows the same error - again pointing to a problem with the dpkg databases. My suggestion is as follows - but please don't try this, as I fear it will make you angry. $ sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status $ sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/available-old /var/lib/dpkg/available $ gksudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status or $ sudo nano /var/lib/dpkg/status Find lines 46354 and 48216 and delete or edit the lines referencing virtualbox. Do the same for /var/lib/dpkg/available. Otherwise, look at the script here: http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Debian/package-database-rebuild.html I was on the verge of almost having to do a fresh install Tsk. The internet, eh? Maybe you should stop relying on the kindness of strangers and pay someone for professional support? because of you Your install was borked long before me, matey. Most people would have done a quick backup and reinstalled long ago, or even done a Google search for /var/lib/dpkg/status which points to solved threads on ubuntuforums, but I guess it's a better idea to get annoyed with the internet. I have tried looking, tried asking, more times than I want, and I have to say, after spending most of the day today, almost demading questions answered, I got my answer. With the terminal, I have always thought with a few direct questions, most problems can be sorted. I honestly believe my problem could have been sorted a lot sooner too. The answer, was given with a command, via the terminal, one which with my experience, I would never in a million years have been able to get. I dont even think many people apart from geeks, would have. Which is why i believe directed questions by somebody who knows could have solved it sooner. I now have after all this time, my sharing back, and my windows sharing, the windows sharing bit took seconds once the initial problem got sorted. I dont understand why it is, that when something is working ok, upgrading can take that away. Why does that happen. I am hoping, with the new upgrade coming soon, it doesnt do the same thing. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

In Windows, a machine's user has defacto admin rights. The question that Vista and Windows 7 asks about making changes to your system when you install something is essentially granting you permission to do something to the system. Ubuntu is a Linux-derived operating system that takes its permissions structure from Unix. On an Ubuntu desktop you are a non-privileged user who has the right to make changes to the system using sudo. When you need to make changes, you are asked to enter your password, which gives you temporary administrator privileges. System level files are owned by the administrator, and generally, you shouldn't have to do anything with them unless you have a problem like this. If you look at them using the file browser, they will appear to be locked. Broadly speaking, the only place that files shouldn't be locked is in your home directory. Now, to test connectivity between your machines. Make sure that they are connected to your router either by cable or wireless. You will need to know their names. On one machine, open Terminal and type 'ping' and the name of the other machine. You might have to enter machinename.local. You should see output like this: PING machine.local (192.168.0.2) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from machine.local (192.168.0.2): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.117 ms 64 bytes from machine.local (192.168.0.2): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.139 ms 64 bytes from machine.local (192.168.0.2): icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.131 ms 64 bytes from machine.local (192.168.0.2): icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=0.114 ms If you don't see that, then you have sort out your connectivity. I need to get some work done now and I really would suggest that if you need to understand the differences between Windows and Ubuntu, that you read this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows and the pages linked to it. Again, I'm not trying to fob you off, but I don't think that this list is the place to talk about the basics. This bug seems to have been around for a while, I vaguely remember encountering it a few versions ago - there's a discussion of it here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/518533 - I could still mount them manually on the commandline, I think it's Nautilus causing the problem. Some people suggest the only way to fix it is a clean re-install. It sounds like your system might need reinstalling anyway. If you're reinstalling from USB, you only need the BIOS to recognise the stick, not Ubuntu, so this shouldn't be a problem if you can get someone to create an installation stick for you or burn a CD for your external USB CD drive? I'd probably put 10.04 on it as 10.10 doesn't have long to run. Paula -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Right-click on it to add to the Favorites section. Similarly you can right-click on the Firefox icon in Favorites and choose Remove. (That does not uninstall it - just removes it from the section). Same with TBird - install it and the icon appears in the Internet section. Right-click to add to Favorites, right-click on Evolution to remove from favorites. Well, that is what I thought, I did try that, but it seems I dont have that option, no right click. Insert the DVD drive to a USB port, then click on the Files and Folders section on the L/H side. The mounted disk will appear in a window below all the internal files and folders. If you need more specific help then I'll try and post some pictures on my blog... I just looked in there, and its not showing up. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Its like I have the same problem before reformat, but without the error message, 'cant mount, not authorised'. Looked in User Groups, I'm admin, so have everything ticked for admin. But still not allowing dvd player to work. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Tried asking on the Remix forum in Ubuntu forums? http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=376 I havent tried that yet, will try now. Have you tried taking the disk out, disconnecting, restarting, re-connecting after Ubuntu has come up and then inserting the disk? I have to say I have none of this with 10.04 Remixit sees my external USB DVDRW drive every time... Basically I tried everything I could think of, all that you have already suggested. What is a bit concerning is I dont have right click on any of the icons, I cant even right click on the desktop. So I'm wondering if its a 10.10 problem. I thought it might have fixed itself with a clean install, but nope. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire One, and I am running Ubuntu 10.10. Since upgrading to this version, I am getting the same problem, I cant use USB sticks and I cant plug in my external dvd rewriter. It gives an error 'unable to mount usb stick, not authorised'. It seems to be a Ubuntu problem, and so far I havent been able to find a fix for it. He bought it from Tesco two years ago, so I think it probably *is* Ubuntu. His problems are mainly that it doesn't recognise USB devices when they're plugged in, and it downloads updates but doesn't install them. He wants to do more than email and web browsing, which is all he feels he can do at the moment (it has shortcuts on the desktop for email and firefox). If it's two years old, and he hasn't upgraded, will it be pre-Unity? As I've never used a netbook, only Ubuntu on desktops and laptops, will I be able to find my way around it? She thinks his cunning plan is to break it so he can buy a new one, but I don't want to be the one that breaks it! :) TIA Dianne -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com mailto:ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/ Doesn't sound like Ubuntu - but the laptop would run a full installation of Ubuntu. Where are you? Is there anyone running installation workshops near you? Paula -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Well, I didnt really want to do a reinstall but with the usb and dvd problem, I couldnt see any other way. I tried everything else, and it just didnt work. This problem seems to be an ongoing thing, does anybody know why it hasnt been fixed?
