We've generated suggestions and we're currently reviewing them. We have quite a backlog to process though, and the translations are a bit technical for some of the contributors. Also, the USG is always a thin rope between keeping the terms in English and translating them in French. October 10th - LanguagePack Translation Deadline, 13.10 translation becomes some kind of sport, nothing more. I'm rather busy next week, but what we can do is resume meetings every two weeks to see if we have anything outstanding. On the French side, we're ok, making progress and tackling the announced ubuntu-touch templates without issues. My worry is that I'm not sure they're listed in the main Ubuntu list, and that some teams might not have noticed it. My other worry is about documentation, which is going to fall on us at some point (no idea when). If you're referring to the DDTP, we're filing a bug for every typo we see, with package name, the string with the typo and the string as it should be. Good News, There's now a new DDTP branch for Saucy with around 3000 additional strings. The import for your language might not be fully finished, but will most likely be this afternoon. Meanwhile, I'm refreshing the DDTP Bogus project templates for all those eager to use automated suggestions or fuzzy. I've fixed that, but the script seems to be having issues fetching the proper figures for some languages (for instance for nl and de). I'm currently looking into that, to avoid having to fetch it manually. Finally, would it be possible to set up a weekly automatic push of the translations to the actual Ubuntu repositories as many translation teams are now moving very fast, and we'd be eager to see users benefit from the translations. This is a bit tricky as a fully automatic solution would require a unlocked gpg key that can upload to the archive on a server. That is a bit scary. We should talk to Martin Pitt to see how he is doing it for the langpack-o-matic stuff and if we could integrate into his framework. That would probably be the best solution. For the serverside part: I've filed a RT ticket for hosting Nightmonkey on ubuntu.com and talked with Istvan about refactoring to ensure that Nightmonkey won't pose any issues at all (we haven't had any downtime afaik, but the load will likely be higher). A quick DDTP update
Good news Michael has fixed the issue that prevented DDTP translations from being displayed in the Application Lens, meaning more visibility for all your hard work. This will definitely land soon in Saucy, and maybe in Raring if an URE is granted. In addition to that, he went the extra mile and did a new refresh of the DDTP template (obviously not as dramatic as the previous one) and prepared the ground for the Saucy version of the DDTP (which will be 99% similar to the Raring one). We're also investigating a way to push translations more often (using automation), but it is a complex matter. Finally, thanks to the UDS work, we're beginning to look into putting a way to contribute easily to the DDTP translations into the Software Centre/Synaptic/Application lens. The source code of our tool is public, and the developper (Istvan) is active and responsive, so it should be easy to make a copy/mirror on Ubuntu.com As for the link, you obviously need to be logged into Launchpad to contribute (otherwise Launchpad tells you to do so) but it will let you propose a suggestion for your language (and even other languages). The url is able to be modified according to the system locale using the various parameters (such as language=fr, release=raring packagename =gnome-screenshot,repo=universe,isok=false) The URL I gave was misleading because I used placeholders. Here's one that's working. I just changed language from fr to es, and i set packagename to kaffeine. Gabor, Restricted sounds like a good compromise; you need a Ubuntu SSO Account, much like Ubuntu One, to login, and then you can suggest. You avoid the risks of rogue translations, and ensure quality while crowdsourcing. If it is a bug, can you check if the bug exists (and if not create it - and if yes, link it in the question), and then mark the question as answered. Hi Hannie My understanding is that you use Rachid's tool, with which we've experimented as well, but the French wiki won't accept the syntax, so we're hosting it on the international one. It does duplicate a bit with the statistics tool, but the great pro is that you can comment and mark specific languages. Once we move to a unified portal, my guess is that we'll host all of them on the international wiki, creating some pages for each language with the tool. Meanwhile, we've made progress during last week's meeting as can be seen at http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2013/05/17/%23ubuntu-translators.html We have a green light for the test server (will be a vhost, so we can install all the tools we already have and integrate them). October... well that's good and bad news, good in the sense it gives me time but bad since annual updates to translations... well... not so great. On the other hand it also puts pressure on me to resolve the issue of our well-meaning and enthusiastic but ultimately not-so-fluent team member. It may or may not happen that Pierre can change something for the next release. But the reality shows that Canonical does not have any strategy in localization and prefer to leave it as is (updates released only when anyone finds someone who can do it, without any schedule). To save your time, you can only look at your specific points :-) All: 1,2, 7 David: 6,5 and 3 Martin: 5 Danilo: 4 Michael, Matthew : only 7 for you, which has a dependency on 6 :-) 1. I've created a separate blueprint for the non-technical stuff (see the first mail of the thread for details on the technical stuff). But we agreed that this non-techy kind of stuff could be easily solved in weekly team meetings, and doesn't require a session at UDS. We brought forward those technical blueprints on the topics that would have the most impact on greatly improving our workflow and diminishing the barrier of entry thus contributing to a stronger community. 3. My feeling is that we need to have a website in line with the current Ubuntu web theme, where we can centralize the static part of this content, as well as our tools (Nightmonkey, Translation Statistics, LangPack Statistics…) 4. I copied Danilo because my understanding is that, as he designed LP Translations, he has a clear view of what it would take to fix it, and could give with a quick 15 min QA the community hints about the time needed, the paths and directions to take. 5. For the Language Pack, it's exactly the input that I was looking for. Although he will probably not be able to implement it, I'd be grateful if Martin could give us pointers (30 to 60 min) of what we need to do for fully automating the full rebuild and enabling tests. 6. Then if a dev does manage to solve the problem or add the functionality or whatever then the Freedom Sponsors people collect the money from all the promises and pays the devs. Where it gets a bit hazy for me is that PayPal may charge a fee on top of that and Freedom Sponsors charge 3% on top too, in order to try to cover administration costs. Both things are allowed under GPL licenses but i know some people will object to paying anything for anything mistakenly thinking that Free (as in freedom) has to be free (as in beer). A lot of people do or have done a lot for free and it wrankles a bit to be asked to pay. On the other hand i got shed loads back just by being involved, back when i was quite into helping people on the Launchpad Answers. I have just found out that GSOC closed it's doors last week but there is always next year. I think LibreOffice got couple of projects in before the doors closed so hopefully the work will be done on them over the summer. Does anyone know of other such projects?
