Re: [ubuntu-uk] Google fu - like kung-fu, but with search :)
The syntax to ask Google to find pages that link to a particular place is link:destination and to find pages on a particular site is site:site. So I believe that to find all links to ubuntuone.com on ubuntu.com, you'd put this into Google: link:ubuntuone.com site:ubuntu.com More details here: https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/136861 Bruno On 29 April 2014 01:50, Alan Pope a...@popey.com wrote: Hi Mike, On 29 April 2014 01:21, Mike Hingley computa_m...@hotmail.com wrote: I was thinking about the U1 close down, and I got to thinking about Iain Farrell's post on design.canonical.com : http://design.canonical.com/2011/10/so-youve-decided-to-make-an-ubuntu-promotional-video/ in this post Iain provides some resources - unfortunately these are sitting on Ubuntu One storage, and will ultimately disappear. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Google fu - like kung-fu, but with search :)
Bruno Alan- Your Google-Fu is indeed mighty I've learned a lot today. Here's something interesting i found using Bruno's search syntax : http://www.ubuntu.com/tour/en/ I had a click through there and there are still links to ubuntu one (both the music store and file store). I created the following tampermonkey script to fix the ubuntu tour : // ==UserScript==// @match http://www.ubuntu.com/tour/en/*// @require http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js// @require http://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/sugar/1.3/sugar.min.js// @name UbuntuOneRemove// ==/UserScript== var runEverySecond = function(){ $('li.uone').remove(); $('li.uonemusic').remove(); }; $(document).ready(function() {setInterval(runEverySecond,1000);}); might be able to do something more appropriate by modifying the tour to not include those icons, or hiding them on the event (when the Ubuntu logo disapears from the screen). Alas my google fu is not so great here, but I was wondering if anyone on the list had any ideas. I was thinking about the U1 close down, and I got to thinking about Iain Farrell's post on design.canonical.com : http://design.canonical.com/2011/10/so-youve-decided-to-make-an-ubuntu-promotional-video/ in this post Iain provides some resources - unfortunately these are sitting on Ubuntu One storage, and will ultimately disappear. I had a quick go, but I know absolutely nothing about scanning Google. At least if we could scan - say ubuntu.com, askubuntu.com, canonical.com etc. We'd find any places where canonical are linking to content that is potentially going to be broken. For internal pages then this content can be moved, and the link repointed. For external stuff (like comments) then perhaps some system of notifying the post authors, or even storing the content and re-writing the link ( not sure here). There is the potential that wiki pages could also be similarly affected. I tried using wayback machine to cache Iain's assets, but I got a 504 Gateway Time-out error - I had thought we could plough the future broken links into the wayback machine but that looks like it's a no go. What do we think? thanks Mike Hingley -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Hi Norman, I'm on 12.04, and having tons of trouble with Chrome, but not on Ancestry. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Google Chrome
Chrome does occasionally have trouble with ancestry.co.uk (as it does with other forms to varying degrees in my experience) but you shouldn't have to do anything to fix it, and if the instructions are from 2010 then they are very out of date so just ignore them. These things eventually either come to the attention of site owners or Google and are fixed in one way or another. s/ On 18 December 2013 09:11, Norman Silverstone nor...@littletank.org wrote: On 18/12/13 08:39, Alan Lord (News) wrote: On 18/12/13 07:36, Paul Mellors wrote: Hello Norman Are you having problems with the site, as using a default chrome should just work fine [after looking at that link], chrome browser is the same as it would be in windows there really isn't anything to disimilar. It talks about encryption software, that is software that encrypts data, and an obligation to tell the US government about it. I suppose that is because such software can be used for all sorts of illegal purposes, for instance drug dealers can encrypt messages sent between themselves for criminal purposes that the US government may want to intercept. Of course, it may also want to intercept messages for other purposes, such as intelligence gathering, hence your reference to prism. This condition is imposed because the code is hosted in the USA. Code hosted elsewhere would, I suppose, not come under these rules. The main annoyance at the moment, though, is that I can't find a way to add a certificate authority to it so my Jabber server throws up an error each time I connect (and I'd rather do it properly than just ignore the error - these things annoy me!). -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | http://www.aptanet.com/ | 023 9238 0001 == Registered in England | Company No: 4905028 | Registered Office: Crawford House, Hambledon Road, Denmead, Waterlooville, Hants, PO7 6NU -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

That sounds reasonable for a social networking site. What constitutes a 'public profile'? Think they are shooting themselves in the foot there, and Google+ hasnt even taken off yet. Well, rather they set the rules *now* so that people know what they're getting into than fall into Facebook's trap of getting told off every time they do anything to the privacy settings. -- Avi -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] Google Earth .....
Hi there My sister asked me to pop over there this morning because she really wanted to use Google Earth. It is not difficult to make it work, but I had to get and install stuff by the commandline. Not something I could have talked her through over the phone. I wonder if Google Earth has been asked to offer Deb packages? Is there a history here? If so, can someone fill me in please? I notice in the Ubuntu repository there is a 'Google Earth Package maker'. That struck me as very odd. Why not just a simple shell script that does what I had to do? Or am I missing something? Alan I think Google will have to look at partners in this and as Ubuntu has a very large user base, surely, it would be foolish to ignore them. But then again they did ignore Sun's java for Google Chrome. With Google introducing new HTML 5 (Web application 1) goodies (Google Wave) this year and what has been mooted for Google Docs with this new standard I see a completely different computing experience. I think it's still early days for those kinds of concerns. The Chrome OS will have to face being the new contender for at least a little while, yet. And like others have said, we want some high profile non-Apple competition to raise awareness of the choices available. If that is achieved, it'll change the marketplace anyway and largely make the web browser issue a moot point. 2009/7/8 David Jones djones.dan...@googlemail.com One thought I had about the Google Chrome OS is Microsoft, or the european legislators will push for the web browser to removed from the OS to match what they expect from Microsoft. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/ -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I'm always a little dubious about trusting Google, but they just keep coming up with great ideas and I can't help but get excited about them. I have run Chromium on Ubuntu, and it worked much better than I was expecting given that it came with the caveat that it wasn't even close to being ready yet. I'm happy to wait for now. I was impressed by the Google wave demo, in fact I had not long before been thinking about how best to collaborate with my colleagues on a paper I am writing, as soon as I watched that demo I thought that's it!. We currently send things back and forth via email, discussion about technical aspects of the paper, a copy of the paper with comments annotated on it, and a wiki with some of the more well thought-out arguments put down.
