Re: [ubuntu-uk] Google fu - like kung-fu, but with search :)

Bruno & Alan-
Your Google-Fu is indeed mighty I've learned a lot today.
Here's something interesting i found using Bruno's search syntax :
http://www.ubuntu.com/tour/en/
I had a click through there and there are still links to ubuntu one (both the
music store and file store).

I created the following tampermonkey script to fix the ubuntu tour :
// ==UserScript==// @match  http://www.ubuntu.com/tour/en/*// @require
http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js// @require
http://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/sugar/1.3/sugar.min.js// @name
UbuntuOneRemove// ==/UserScript==   var runEverySecond = function(){
$('li.uone').remove();  $('li.uonemusic').remove();
}; $(document).ready(function() {setInterval(runEverySecond,1000);});

might be able to do something more appropriate by modifying the tour to not
include those icons, or hiding them on the event (when the Ubuntu logo
disapears from the screen).

The syntax to ask Google to find pages that link to a particular place is
link: and to find pages on a particular site is site:. So I
believe that to find all links to ubuntuone.com on ubuntu.com, you'd put this
into Google:

link:ubuntuone.com site:ubuntu.com

[ubuntu-uk] Google fu - like kung-fu, but with search :)

2014-04-28 Thread Mike Hingley
Alas my google fu is not so great here, but I was wondering if anyone on the
list had any ideas.
I was thinking about the U1 close down, and I got to thinking about Iain
Farrell's post on design.canonical.com :
http://design.canonical.com/2011/10/so-youve-decided-to-make-an-ubuntu-promotional-video/
in this post Iain provides some resources - unfortunately these are sitting on
Ubuntu One storage, and will ultimately disappear.
The link for the resource in question if you're interested is :
http://ubuntuone.com/1UtWyqSmCXQy3bs3ijTwck
So I was wondering if we could use Google to identify pages where there a links
in the form of http://ubuntuone.com/ and flag those pages as potentially
broken when Ubuntu One goes kaput.
I had a quick go, but I know absolutely nothing about scanning Google. At
least if we could scan - say ubuntu.com, askubuntu.com, canonical.com etc.
We'd find any places where canonical are linking to content that is potentially
going to be broken. For internal pages then this content can be moved, and the
link repointed. For external stuff (like comments) then perhaps some system of
notifying the post authors, or even storing the content and re-writing the link
( not sure here).
There is the potential that wiki pages could also be similarly affected.
I tried using wayback machine to cache Iain's assets, but I got a 504 Gateway
Time-out error - I had thought we could plough the future broken links into the
wayback machine but that looks like it's a no go.

What do we think?

thanks

I'm on 12.04, and having tons of trouble with Chrome, but not on
Ancestry. But I do see that the post you're directed to was published in
2010, so I should think the info was out of date anyway. I don't have
the problems in Firefox, so I think the problem is Chrome rather than
Ancestry or my OS.

My thanks to all those who came to my assistance. I took the bull by the
horns, cleared the cache, re-booted and all is well again.

Chrome does occasionally have trouble with ancestry.co.uk (as it does with
other forms to varying degrees in my experience) but you shouldn't have to
do anything to fix it, and if the instructions are from 2010 then they are
very out of date so just ignore them. These things eventually either come
to the attention of site owners or Google and are fixed in one way or
another.

I think you are misunderstanding what it says. It talks about encryption
software, that is software that encrypts data, and an obligation to tell
the US government about it. I suppose that is because such software can be
used for all sorts of illegal purposes, for instance drug dealers can
encrypt messages sent between themselves for criminal purposes that the US
government may want to intercept. Of course, it may also want to intercept
messages for other purposes, such as intelligence gathering, hence your
reference to prism. This condition is imposed because the code is hosted
in the USA. Code hosted elsewhere would, I suppose, not come under these
rules.

The other part refers to those countries subject to US export regulations,
such as Cuba has been for many years and Syria has been since the troubles
started there more recently. Export of computer code is subject to the
same regulations as the export of other goods to these countries.

Hope that explains things a bit for you.

Agreed, which makes it extremely unfortunate that it is the only client I've
found on any platform that supports the range of services I want to connect to.
I'm still desperately looking for a half usable client that supports at least
Twitter and Identica, but also Facebook (spit) and I guess now Google+
(Diaspora*?!). If it could handle multiple accounts that would be even better
(Twitter and Identica wise that is). Even if I narrow down the requirements to
just Twitter I can't find a client that I'm completely happy with :(

Empathy is somewhat lacking too unfortunately. It frequently fails to connect
to some accounts (not ones I really care about thankfully, and that is likely
due to the services themselves I suspect). There's a few features I miss from
Pidgin (although I'd have to power it up to remember the, as I've been using
Empathy for a while now - last seen time is one, although it is just last time
you were both on at the same time). The main annoyance at the moment, though,
is that I can't find a way to add a certificate authority to it so my Jabber
server throws up an error each time I connect (and I'd rather do it properly
than just ignore the error - these things annoy me!).

That sounds reasonable for a social networking site. What constitutes
a 'public profile'?

Well, rather they set the rules *now* so that people know what they're
getting into than fall into Facebook's trap of getting told off every
time they do anything to the privacy settings.

So the important question is how can we use Google+ in a constructive way to
improve the Group/Our Lives/whatever. Diaspora contunues to be a bit of a
damp squib :(

Google+ is very underwhelming at the moment, all I have managed to do so far
is spam people in my address book (only one mail, but to a lot of people!).

Done. Email inbound

Apparently the method of starting a circle and adding people via email
works when inviting doesn't.

iirc the euro. requirement was not so much for there to be no browser
at all, but for the option of allowing other browsers and a removal of
IE if the user wanted.

The situation now proposed by MS that Windows 7 will be shipped with
no browser at all in europe was something the legislators expressed
surprise about, and suggested that was not necessary.

Microsoft had committed an abuse, the Commission has suggested that
consumers should be offered a choice of browser, not that Windows
should be supplied without a browser at all.'

2009-07-08 Thread Bruce Beardall
I think it's still early days for those kinds of concerns. The Chrome OS
will have to face being the new contender for at least a little while, yet.
And like others have said, we want some high profile non-Apple competition
to raise awareness of the choices available. If that is achieved, it'll
change the marketplace anyway and largely make the web browser issue a moot
point.

Yes, although I'd not read that actual article. I've followed their
shenanigans for a while now mainly because I'm shocked at what they are
allowed to get away with. That text is now quite old and while I don't
for one moment think they have turned over a new leaf they certainly
seem to be more disjointed and schizophrenic in what they do. Of course
it could all be some good cop, bad cop routine but it's difficult to see
how a corporation that large would be capable of organising such a
thing.

I wonder if Nokia have got an axe to grind? Do they have any patents on
H264 or AAC?

Nice to see that Microsoft used OGG in Halo ;-)

how funny :) Adults can be so childish :P

and yeah, ff3.5 includes it already - the first install initial page has

Nokia submitted a document that looked like it was written by a 5 year old
which basically said 'We don't want OGG media in HTML5 just in case someone
finds a patent after we have implemented it that means everyone has to pay for
it.' And then recommended to use h.264 because it already is covered by
patents. It's a ridiculous stance so good on Mozilla if they've gone against it.

Apple killed the open source (ogg) codec stuff with some help from
Google from what I've read. There seem to be some worries about ogg
infringing patents.

An OS from google can only be a good thing for ubuntu, getting peoples
heads around the idea of alternative OSs. More high profile choices
will equal more progress. Right now almost anyone i speak to has no
idea what the OS is, and that you can even run a non apple computer on
anything but windows.

Alan

I think Google will have to look at partners in this and as Ubuntu has a
very large user base, surely, it would be foolish to ignore them. But then
again they did ignore Sun's java for Google Chrome.

With Google introducing new HTML 5 (Web application 1) goodies (Google Wave)
this year and what has been mooted for Google Docs with this new standard I
see a completely different computing experience.

The telegraph have also made the same mistake as the Beeb, even worse though
is some of the so called non-linux tech news sites have made the same
presumptions.

For me is the HTML 5 standard, does that mean Google might go the
opensourced route with their media playing etc.

A blow to linux distros..

How many OEMs ship Ubuntu as an easily available option on
netbooks/laptops/desktops/ right now, and how many will in 2010 when
Google OS releases?

How many will Google have?

Will this make Ubuntu irrelevent for large swathes of web users?

some things the Beeb does very well, but Tech isn't one of them.
