Re: How to Use WAP Gateway For Bulk SMS

2014-11-03 Thread Alvaro Cornejo
Hi

Sms throughput depends on what your carrier/smsc allows you to send.

In smpp smsc it is usually limited by what you contract with your carrier
and can go from 1 sms/sec to 10 or more sms/sec.

with modems (smsc-at), you are limited by the protocol itself, available
radio channels, signal quality, etc. Here usually you get something like 1
sms each 5-10 seconds. I usually do my calculations with 480 sms/hr.

In both cases, you can use multiple links in order to increase your total
throughput. On the first you need to negotiate it with your provider; in
the second, you need to purchase more modems and sims with the correct plan.

Alvaro

How to Use WAP Gateway For Bulk SMS

2014-11-03 Thread Aditya Khanna
*Hello Everyone,*

I'm new with Kannel SMS Gateway.

I have configured Bearerbox, SMSBox and SQLBox for sending bulk sms through
my HTTP Application. But problem is that the speed of sending sms is too
low.

So my first question is that how to increase the speed of sending sms.
Second one is what is the importance of WAPBox in Bulk SMS.

Please any one suggest me regarding above questions.

Your reply will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Stuart,

please let me answer you questions inlined below:

I have a few questions:

Is the WAP Kannel gateway in use commercially in many networks?

the normal Kannel WAP gateway, means the WAP 1.2.1 parts are
"officially" not running in any live MNO networks. We have informations
that some Latin American and Asian networks have it as a kind of
"fallback" for their main commercial vendors.

Beside the normal Kannel, there are a numerous set of Kannel-CG
installation at MNOs and MVNOs. The commercial Kanenl-CG (carier-grade)
WAP gateway that we provide is a full featured WAP 1.2.1 and WAP 2.0
gateway, including a full featured RADIUS server and on-the-fly byte
accounting server.

We are proud that Kannel-CG has been substituting several major
commercial vendor installations, including deployments from Huawei,
Ericsson, Openwave and Acision - by outperforming all of these vendors
in terms of maximum concurrency performance.

Does it support all of or most of the last WAP protocol?

The open source Kannel does support WAP 1.2.1. Though, there are some
"flaws" in the WAP 1.2.1 stack, especially when used under high
concurrency load. This was the main reason we have re-written the WAP
1.2.1 stack with more effective data structures and releasing this in
combination with WAP 2.0 (HTTP proxy capability) support into the
commercial Kannel-CG product.

Would it be capable of approximately 70 Transactions per second WAP Pulls?

Should, that's not a huge amount of concurrent traffic. I don't have any
hard figures for the open source Kannel WAP part, the Kannel-CG
installations handle from 800 to 2400 TPS concurrently, depending on
hardware and architecture layout.

What Hardware would be recommended to support that level of throughput?

The 70 TPS should be working out-of-the-box for any normal production
class machine of today. Having a nice amount of RAM is always welcome,
but not necessary.

Thanks for any help that can be given.

you're absolutely welcome. Please let me know if I can assist you any
further, either with the open source Kannel parts for the WAP 1.2.1 or
even with the commercial Kannel-CG WAP Gateway.

Stipe

the normal Kannel WAP gateway provides the WAP 1.2.1 stack (including WAP Push),
which uses UDP as IP bearer and can be utilized via CSD or GPRS. In fact the
underlying radio transmission technology is not specified in the specs.

For WAP 2.0 you use "more or less" plain HTTP, with some addition of WTCP which
uses a "radio-efficient" TCP implementation.

Essentially today, the WAP gateway takes 2 roles:

a) transcode from WAP 1 phones the WTP/WSP layers to TCP for the target HTTP
servers.

b) provisioning of RADIUS values in HTTP headers towards the target HTTP, i.e.
for registered VASP or the MMSC of the operator to receive the MSISDN of the user.

The normal Kannel can handle both, where the Kannel-CG includes a full WAP 2.0
stack and a more complex RADIUS AAA framework. Both are relevant for mobile
network operators, and don't make any sense for VASPs, as long as they are not
in control of the GGSN of the network, "or" the MNO provides a dedicated APN via
it's GGSN towards the VASP, i.e. for closed user base functionality.

Your SIM card should be internet enabled to access your gateway. That is
more expensive than using a wap enabled SIM that accesses only your

Just enter the ip address of your Kannel instance in your WAP gateway

Dear Nikos,

I guess I know what going on.

Since I check the cell phone spec, Nokia 1606, which I use, I find its
browser support WAP 2.0, which can use HTTP proxy directly to be its WAP
gateway.

(I also used winwap smartphone browser emulator and configured http
proxy to kannel and it can't work)

And I think it is also the reason why I only can capture packet via
filter tcp port 9201, and get nothing via filter udp port 9201 (I'd
tried it before).

So..how do you think? Is it possible to be the reason why kannel
can't work?

Traffic is transparent for all mobile types that support WAP 1.x.

You only need udp 9200 - 9203 for wap traffic. No tcp and no other

I use wireshark on windows, too. If you specify in the filter udp, it
will capture udp traffic. I do it all the time.

I check “netstat –a|grep 9200” and it doesn’t show anything.

Since I supposed bearerbox is bound to tcp port, I didn’t check udp port

I attach the netstat –tulnp result in the following.

If you look at your udpc_create it clearly shows that bearerbox binds to udp

Probably your netstat output is wrong.

Dear Nikos,

I check "netstat -a|grep 9200" and it doesn't show anything.

Since I supposed bearerbox is bound to tcp port, I didn't check udp port
before.

So I try "netstat -tulnp" and it shows there is bearerbox process
running on the udp port 9200 and 9201 respectly.

I attach the netstat -tulnp result in the following.

Hi Kao,

You are doing fine with the mailing list. Plus you know how to use Wireshark on
your own! This should be a breeze.

Smells like a firewall issue. However it is not, since it would show in netstat.

Let's look at some logs:

Kill all bearerbox wapbox processes.

Start from one shell:

bearebox -v 0

>From another shell:

wapbox -v 0

Cpature and post. Also please post your entire confile with * where you want to
hide info. I can't see anything wrong with what you posted, so there might be
something bad elsewhere.

  Dear Nikos,

  Thanks for you suggestion!

I’ve put password in my original kannel.conf, I am sorry that I should put
some * mark in this column so that it wouldn’t misleading you, sorry again!

I also try your suggestion command and it shows the pid and my bearerbox
running command.

I’ve tried to use wireshark (ethreal) to capture the incoming port 9201
packets and find the kernel will response a RST/ACK when it receives my cell
phone’s link request.

So I suppose for some reason kernel doesn’t have any record that there is a
TCP process listening on the port 9201. Any idea about it?

wapbox has no HTTP admin interface as bearerbox does.

You need to use Mbuni as VAS MMS gateway for sending MMS, kannel itself
doesn't have any MMS modules. On the other hand to install Mbuni and
start working with it, you should have Kannel installed on the same
server. There is no need for Kannel to be running but it should be
installed.

Not on Linux (that I know off).

There is a windows based app call SMSNow which is pretty good.

Hi Jarwan,

For sending MMS , you can use Mbuni alone with MM7 acting as VAS gateway , or
You can use Mbuni as standalone MMSC , you will have to use kannel with it for
sending MMS notifications.

Kannel alone is only used for sending text messages and not MMS.

Re: WAP gateway

2007-11-19 Thread Kudzai Gadzira
Hi

If i understand correctly for question 1>> if you want the wap site to
be hosted on your own machine you will need a web server and access it
through localhost if its on the same machine as your kannel or access
it through an ip adress if it is connected by another computer and say
if you use Apache you can store it under htdocs. If you want it to be
hosted say by web hosting company make sure they have a wap gateway.

for question 2>> writing your pages from scratch is more of a likely
option. My advice is that you use XHML MP which can make your site
accessible both via web and wap, otherwise if you use WML and / HTML
you will be faced with the dilemma of updating or making changes to
your site more than just once.

Hi Arun,

the issue is as follows:

There is no (ok, let's relativate: it's tricky and out of scope for this issue
here) change to connect a real phone with Kannel (running as WAP gw) via some
kind of serial or bluetooth connection...

(Sidenote: some OS of phones, ie. Symbian on Nokias can be "tricked" to use a IP
stack via bluetooth instead of GPRS bearer, but that's tricky).

You will have to establish a GPRS session with your phone (via a dedicated APN)
and then can address Kannel's WDP, WTP ports for WAP 1.2.x gateway functionality.

Now, here the next "problem" starts. ;) Usualy GSM network providers offer
dedicated APNs for WAP and MMS. Both usually will NOT allow you to connect to an
"unknown" IP for WAP gw packets. In this case you need to use a so called
"Internet APN", that is "open" in terms of packet filtering.

Once again: Using a WAP GW is more something for a wireless carrier (that have
access to core infrastructure nodes, ie. GPRS APNs) and not for VASPs or alike.

J2ME and kannel wap gateway to access http servlet

2006-08-14 Thread Linkas

Hello list!

I'm a happy kannel user since more than a couple of years now, but I've
used it only as a sms interface from http to some protocols like smpp,
emi or at-commands and for these I really need to THANK the guys
outthere: Andreas, Bruno, Stipe and Aarno(also thanks for helping in the
userlist), Alexander, Lars and Kalle.

Actually I'm shaking toghether many tecnologies from jsp, php, j2me, sms
and so on to develop a new service.

First I've used kannel to send sms messages to a j2me application to
interact with them, and succeed :-D

I've also used kannel to configure SyncML services :-D
Then I've tryed to send the j2me application with sms/ota tecnologies
using wappushes, and also succeed in delivery contents to phones.

The second step was to let a j2me application talk to my servlet on an
http server (such as apache) and, as soon as my j2me phone uses a "gprs
internet" connection, everything works fine.

Now I'm facing that using "wap connection", my telco wap-gateway don't
like the HttpConnection my j2me application tries to open.
So to let my j2me application talk to my webserver using a wap
connection, what should I do ?

1) configure the kannel wap gateway, use the telco's "wap connection"
and access to the wap-gateway url wich access the webserver

OR

2) configure the kannel wap gateway, create a own "wap connection" using
my wap gateway ip address in the proxy setting

So, any idea ?

Also, a detail: should my webserver speak "wml" or "html" ?

Does anyone has experience with this ?

Thanks
J

You can test the WAP 1.2.x functionality by using the test/fakewap application
within Kannel, simply issue

  $ cd gateway
  $ ./test/fakewap -g 127.0.0.1 http://wap.foobar.com/

in order to issue WTP PDUs to bearerbox and wapbox. wapbox will then do a HTTP
GET request to the desired URL and transode the pure HTTP again to WTP PDUs to
fakewap.

See test/fakewap for more runtime options.

which ones do?

This is currently the only command set that is implemented. So if you want
to use Kannel with a virtual SMSC (a phone or modem) you are out of luck.

I agree with Rene here.

For the WAP part this is more generic. WAP considers the presence of IP on the
device/network, so if the CDMA network allows you to establish a TCP/IP stack
you can use Kannel as WAP gateway.

Kannel DOES support CDMA networks in some way.
You just need an upstream (SMPP or thelike) provider that delivers to those
kinds of networks.

As for using Kannel with a CDMA SMS modem, I haven't found phones/modems
that support the extended GSM AT command set.
This is currently the only command set that is implemented. So if you want
to use Kannel with a virtual SMSC (a phone or modem) you are out of luck.

Hi ,     Can we use "MAP-URL" for load balancing ?      as an example we have two different wap gatweways. one is kannel . but clients are using only one gateway's ip address as their gatway address.     How would be balance the load of access the gateways     Thank you , Kane.

Hi
Thanks I did manage to run simulate kannel through winwap browser.(by
connecting linux and windows over LAN)

But what if I want to use the gateway to access wap through my mobile
phone?
Like you are given a gateway IP address by the cellular provider which you
put in your mobile settings, what will be that IP address ?

Suppose my computer running kannel has a public IP address of 203.81.224.10
so I should be able to access kannel gateway over
http://203.81.224.10:9201 but when I do this I get an error ?

Thanks

Yep, you can configure it, but it does not necessarily work. Of course,
you can try.
Your operator may be an expection.

Do you mean that a wap gw is a fixed part of GGSN node in GPRS

can't use any other gateway ?

I thought that a GPRS APN has open internet access so we can configure

That is more like a problem of GPRS, because wap gw is a part of GGSN.
CSD would usually work, and is not much slower either (strange but
true).

I still have some problems answering the following
question :

When should one use a public Wap gateway and When
should he use a public one?,doesn 't the private one
need some special settings on the Mobile phone and
then make deployement of wap stuff difficult?

Thank you

yes. Kannel as a WAP gateway sits "on top" of the physical transmission layer
which is either CSD or GPRS. Kannel needs IP connectivity to work. GPRS is the
layer providing the IP connectivity.

There is not limitation in Kannel from software perspective.
Real-life operators (and setups I did too) use load-balanced machines via LVS to
spread the load accross several machines. But you will need several hundred
concurrent users per second to reach this demand and have a single machine
running at it's physicall networking limits.

Most operators have different GPRS APN's for MMS, Wap, and also one for
public internet.

If you want to use your own WAP gateway (e.g. Kannel) use the public
internet APN rather than the Wap APN.

Please Help! Communicatig with the WAP gateway ?

2005-01-11 Thread Rozsahegyi Robert

Dear Arno,

Thank You for the quck reply.
I have to confess that I don't try this connection
on the Kannel gateway, just on my GSM operator's WAP gateway.
(t-mobile)
I think I came over the GPRS part of the
connection,  I can send UDP packeges and I receive answer packages like
this.
(UDP layer parts removed in this example, it
is just the user data. )
send: 0A 00 01 32  (try to connect anyhow on
WTP)
rec:   9C 80 01 19 00
rec:   9C 80 01 19 00

This package comes from time to time, I think I
should ACK it, but don't know how. (Tried to compose ACK message, but not
succeeded.)
What would be a general form of connecting to the
gateway and send a "get URL" ?

Best Regards

WAP Gateway

2004-12-29 Thread Michael Mugge
Is anyone actually using kannel as WAP gateway over GPRS?

Apparently here in the US, the carriers do not allow GPRS connections to
gateways that are not in a subscribers list of allowed gateways (makes
sense from a business point of view).
Secondly, the phones sold by these carriers are loaded with software
that prevents WAP Profile customization. Example T610 with T-Mobile has
no "Internet Services" icon.

Does any-one else have this problem?

Motorola/Verizon v710 Can't Connect to WAP Gateway

2004-09-15 Thread Adam Rosi-Kessel
I'm having trouble getting my Motorola v710 (Verizon) phone to access the
Internet through a kannel WAP gateway I've set up on my server.

It works fine when I just use an HTTP gateway with squid as the proxy.

I don't know if the problem is my phone or the kannel setup, since I have
no other phone to test it with.

I'm using the Debian packages, version 1.2.1-5, on a Debian sid system.

bearerbox and wapbox seem to start up okay. I can even see my phone
attempting to connect:

2004-09-14 16:45:05 [13] INFO: Client connected from <166.156.206.207>
2004-09-14 16:45:05 [13] DEBUG: setting up systems for new wapbox

2004-09-14 16:45:30 [13] DEBUG: Thread 13 (gw/bb_boxc.c:function) terminates.

Where 166.156.206.207 is definitely my phone.

But it terminates after about 30 seconds, and the phone says "connection
lost."

There is no activity in wapbox.log during this time period; however.

I am using a very basic config, basically right out of the box:

group = core
admin-port = 13000
admin-password = [...xxx...]
admin-deny-ip = "*.*.*.*"
admin-allow-ip = "127.0.0.1"
wapbox-port = 13002
wdp-interface-name = "*"
log-file = "/var/log/kannel/bearerbox.log"
box-deny-ip = ""
box-allow-ip = "*.*.*.*"

group = wapbox
bearerbox-host = localhost
log-file = "/var/log/kannel/wapbox.log"

Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong or how to further troubleshoot
this issue?

If you want to have them transported over SMS bearer and you are
*already* connected to an SMSC using Kannel. You can use Kannel on its
own (as PPG, push proxy gateway) to do this.

Please refer to the user's guide on how to setup the PPG part of Kannel.

I use the kannel just the same way like Wap Gateway does and everything
works fine except for one thing. The Wap Gateway quite often "questions

Maybe I'll explain it more precisely.
At the first connection with the Wap Gateway it looks like this:

However if we wait more than 30 seconds the connection between the
telephone and the Wap Gateway is the same as at the first time, so
unfortunately it is longer (more packages). As a result we send
more data and pay more. I must add that it doesn't matter
if the second page that we are visitting is the same or another one.

So My question is: "How make this time of "remembering" information
about the telephone longer than 30 seconds e.g. 24 hours?"

I'm looking forward to hearing from you

Andrzej Kalemba :)

All the nokia's symbian os at least.

Unfortunately our CMG also didn't support ESAR, so we had to do a small
symbian app that fetches itself (through regular http) that 500+K
realplayer.sis.

Weirdo. I've once done a test because I needed to download Real Player
for Nokia and I managed to download 300+KB through Kannel and then it
hitted the PANIC button, so how can Robert just download 143K and me
and
Igor do 300+KB ?

As something changed in the mean time, related to the packet size ? I
recall of using a clean daily cvs at the time, but it was several

Problem with WAP-Gateway/File sizes

2003-11-20 Thread Robert Hassing
Hi All,

I have this problem with the WAP gateway I did setup.

The problem is that a maximum of 254/255 packets can be send concerning 1
file.
This means that if I want to download a file with a size higher as 143KB the
transmission fails :-(

The error I got is the following:

In wapbox.log:
PANIC: gwlib/octstr.c:1677: octstr_set_bits: Assertion `value <= mask'
failed.

And in bearerbox.log:
2003-11-19 16:13:55 [7] ERROR: Couldn't send UDP packet
2003-11-19 16:13:55 [7] ERROR: System error 90: Message too long
2003-11-19 16:13:55 [7] ERROR: WDP/UDP: could not send UDP datagram
2003-11-19 16:14:05 [7] ERROR: Couldn't send UDP packet

Is there a possibility to download files which are bigger as appr. 143KB

With kind regards,

Robert Hassing

Pardon what is probably a clueless question, but I was just thinking about
this and saw your message. Is it possible to plug html2wml into kannel to
convert HTML-only sites in wml? I installed kannel a couple nights ago
and saw from the logs that it was choking on HTML content.
if you want to have html pages auto-converted (upon request) into wml pages,
you might want to try using html2wml as a CGI from your web server.

From the man page:

README(1) "Html2Wml Documentation" README(1)

NAME
Html2Wml -- Program that can convert HTML pages to WML pages
SYNOPSIS
Html2Wml can be used as either a shell command:
 $ html2wml file.html

   or as a CGI:

 /cgi-bin/html2wml.cgi?url=/index.html

Thank You.
if you want to serve wml pages for your cell phone, you could...

1) install apache

2) add these lines to its conf and restart apache:
AddType text/vnd.wap.wml .wml
AddType image/vnd.wap.wbmp .wbmp
AddType application/vnd.wap.wmlc .wmlc
AddType text/vnd.wap.wmlscript .wmls
AddType application/vnd.wap.wmlscriptc .wmlsc
3) create test.wml:

http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/wml12.dtd";>
 Testing Apache WAP/WML support.

now try accessing this wml file with your cell phone...

you could also install html2wml. this handy tools can convert a html file to a
wml file.
