so viel Pits frei bleiben sollen.

No, unfortunately it is not--unless you contribute $100/year for tech support.
Neo has only one full-time engineer to maintain the program: Patrick Luby. And
while he does give good value for the money, you cannot post questions to the
support forum unless you maintain that contributor status. There are only two
or three part-time coders who contribute.

(N.B.: I once had a problem with NeoOffice screwing up my inserted pictures,
then crashing. I posted the problem and an example file on the support forum,
and Patrick issued a patch within 90 minutes. He seldom takes more than a day
or two to solve problems, although the knotty ones do take longer. His service
is unsurpassed.)

I use NeoOffice on Mavericks (latest version). To unmerge cells, select the
whole data set (not Select All...). From the main menu at the top of the
screen, choose Format, then Merge Cells, then uncheck either Merge Cells or
Merge and Center cells, whichever is checked.

Now you can sort. Then, immediately save the file under a different name. Look
carefully at your original data and the data that resulted from the sort. Do
the data in the rows make sense? Is anything missing? Are they in proper sort
order in all columns? Remember, to sort you must select the entire data set. If
you select only a column, then that column is all that will be sorted; the rest
of the data will stay as it was.

You can get the latest NeoOffice from the App Store for free. It is one of the
few programs in the App Store which notifies you of available patches or
updates; it does not update automatically, but allows you to selectively eschew
updates until you've finished your current project (just in case...). Tech
support must be paid for. Only you can decide whether it's worth it.

go to 'tools - autocorrect options - options' and uncheck 'apply numbering'.

you may wish to uncheck something else there. i, personally, prefer disabling

Seems to me it is simpler (and a lot more useful) that you focus

The compatibility issues (a), (b), (c) and (d) are true for any proprietary
file structure, and can be seen between different versions of MS Office.

My version of Apache Open Office has spell checking and dictionaries available
in many different languages and dialects. I don't use grammar checking but I
believe extensions are available that will perform that function.

Depending on your operating system and display you should be able to view
multiple documents side by side; I can easily view two documents on my iMac and
even a third using my iPad as an auxiliary display.

I don't know enough about presentation software to address your last issue.

If you're happy with your current versions of AOO, operating

What's the point of blaming others for your own decisions?

Then of course, if you have a specific problem with AOO, which

Re: Open Office 4.1 horizontal scrolling on MacBook Pro

2014-06-06 Thread Mike

Thanks, Brian. It worked.

I downloaded http://people.apache.org/~hdu/AOO_trunk_i124191.dmg twice
yesterday and on both occasions the file name was reported as
unrecognisable with the name AOO_trunk_i124191.d and there was nothing
I found that would correct it. I have not in the past decade ever had a
file type truncated like that. Another mystery!

But the download this morning was troublefree - and the irritating bug
is fixed.

Thank you very much for your help and patience.

Thank you Ariel. You were correct in the bug details you pointed me to,
and it was the build mentioned in the associated comments that I tried
unsuccessfully. See my email this morning to Brian Barker copied to

All's now well. I will probably never know why what worked fine today
wouldn't work yesterday. A June bug?

Interesting. Which OS AOO version are you using?

On my testing setup (Win XP, 7, 8, 8.1 Linux RPM 32 64 with AOO
4.1.0 clean new install) the leading E of the word EDIBLE will not
capitalize, unless it is separated from the left hand
parenthesis/bracket by at least one space. This was the result was the
same no matter what other case, including lower, had been applied to the
sentence previously.

Modern anti-virus programs have something called reputation checks.
If you try to run a program, it does the normal scan for known
viruses. But then it also checks to see if other users have
encountered that program before as well. If many people have run it,
and reported no problems, then it is given the green light. If it is
a program that few people have run, then it is flagged as high risk.

The problem fixes itself after a few days, as more and more people
install AOO 4.1 and the anti-virus companies see AOO 4.1 as common.

Code signing with Authenticode would help as well. They might trust
signed programs, even if they are uncommon.

It is often the case that when an OpenOffice file returns the ASCII filter
options screen it has become corrupted. Such corruption often occurs with
improper (too speedy) close down of the computer (not allowing time for
hardware/software write buffers to flush) or working direct to a USB stick and
improper observance of correct USB removal protocols.

Rename the files to type .zip (at operating system level) and see if an archive
utility will open the file. Your content should be in content.xml
If the files don't open the archive may be damaged. How much (if any) is
recoverable depends on which repair utility you use.

improper (too speedy) close down of the computer (not allowing time for
hardware/software write buffers to flush) or working direct to a USB stick
and improper observance of correct USB removal protocols.

Rename the files to type .zip (at operating system level) and see if an
archive utility will open the file. Your content should be in content.xml
If the files don't open the archive may be damaged. How much (if any) is
recoverable depends on which repair utility you use.

If the files don't open with an archive utility then they are damaged. If they
do open with an archive utility, but not with OpenOffice, a new OpenOffice user
Profile may help - details on how to do this are at

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74t=12426.

I haven't used a zip repair utility in a long time - a Google search throws up
http://www.diskinternals.com/zip-repair/

Having in the past used several diskinternals utilities, I'd suggest that one.
Best to work on a copy of the damaged file(s)

Hmm Andrew is saying that all of his files were effected. Short
of something that corrupted the entire hard drive that would be very
unusual.

A few questions:

1) Did you change anything recently on your computer, since the last
time you successfully worked with these files? For example, did you
upgrade OpenOffice?

2) What OS and version are you running?

3) What kind of documents are these? What are the file extension?

4) Can you try loading these files on another machine? Does that work?

Regards,

Hi Dino,

It would help us answer your question if you could tell us which OS
(Operating System - eg. Linux, Mac, Solaris, Windows, etc.) and the
program version (eg. 4.01) you are using. Your email header suggests
your OS is a version of Windows, in which case I suggest the following:

Even if you still have the software installation program you originally
downloaded, download it again from http://www.openoffice.org/download.

It is always a good idea to check the downloaded file for download
errors by comparing the checksums as noted here:
http://www.openoffice.org/download/checksums.html

Run the installation program and you will be offered a few options. Take
the Repair option and when the reinstall/repair has finished the
program should work as expected.

OK! This is a different issue. What you are encountering is called
Windows UAC (User Access Control).

Are you running/logged-in as an Administrator with elevated
privileges, or as a Standard user with normal privileges? If you saved
the saved the document(s) while logged-in as an Administrator (eg. the
Administrator's My Documents folder) and try to open it/them when
logged-in as a Standard user you will see that Windows system message.
If you are not already, try logging in with an Administrator account and
save the document(s) to your Windows Public folder. From there any
user should be able to open and save the files. There are other
situations (eg trying to save documents opened directly from email
attachments to system privileged folders) when the Requires Elevation
message will be displayed.

Apache OpenOffice cannot and does not attempt to override Windows UAC.
For more information about Windows UAC look on the Microsoft website or
do an internet search.

That is a very GOOD idea, considering the number of questions requiring the
advice of “remove folder xxx from the folder yyy”, something that has fooled
many Mac users of Openoffice, me included.

My impression is that the question on the list requiring the standard response
has appeared at least more than once per day lately. If we consider that as a
guess that less than 10% of users (maybe less) who have met that condition and
have reached the list and asked for a solution, the solution is very much
overdue.

You need to delete the folder org.openoffice.script.savedState. It is

Even brighter idea: it should delete the problematic folder by itself,
without user intervention. And good news: Herbert already implemented this
for OpenOffice 4.1 (coming next month), so we'll get around this Mac OS X
 quirk. See

it's not just in the library, but in the subdirectory 'saved application

That would be a folder? I think that is what you mean. There are 3 folders in
my “save application state” folder none of them have the
org.openoffice.script.savestate. I am new to Mac have owned Windows computers
before. Is there a way to completely remove open office and start all over? I
have changed the security to allow all apps to install. I did one yesterday
from TD ameritrad and installed the short cut on my desktop. Thanks for your

The next point rev release of Open Office should include a modified
version of the useless dialog box which has bedeviled so many users.

It should say something like:

in the Saved Application State folder in your User/Library.

Re: Open Office Problem

I wish that I hadn’t downloaded this program to begin with. It has produced
nothing but problems. Example, when I type a date in word or Excel, it
stubbornly defaults to numbers i.e.2/5/14. I may have a situation where I
want the words. Another example is in Excel. In Word, I can go to the top and
make the appropriate click so that I get an automatic ,. It is maddening.

The person helping me on the phone when I bought this program (not knowing that
I wasn’t just buying word) led me through steps to have the default program to
be Open Office. I assume that there are steps have the default program be Word
and Excel again.

Background - The reason that I bought it was that I had a crash and had to
download my stuff from Carbonite. For awhile, Word was absent so I went on
line to order it. That is when I bought Open Office when all I wanted was word
again. I didn’t realize that it was going to produce problems until the above
problems kept occurring.

So, quite simply, how do I change the default back to the old Word program? If
it can be done one way there should be an easy way to undo it. BTW, the
Command click you mentioned didn’t work.

Susan

P.S. How about a phone number so I can quickly resolve this. A real person on
the phone helped me download this program and this is when the default to Open
Office was done.

You didn't have to pay for it. OpenOffice is a free download from
www.openoffice.org. You must have got it from somewhere else. I don't
use Calc very often, so I can't help you with that part.

I assume you're running Windows. If so, you should be able to right
click on a file and choose the desired application. There is a check
box to make that the default app.
