I might be the culprit delaying for a couple of days this time. Flies
were going to be mailed yesterday but couldn't since all of us are sick
here. Postponed to today... was the plan, since Teresa had to go
shopping (sick or not). But I didn't manage to pack them in time, since
I had to tag flies first... and since I'd lost my swap box, I had
to carve an 8-compartment fly-box into a 1-compartment box too... which
btw is a thing I won't try to do quickly again. With the plaster I
have on my thumb now, I don't expect to do any precision pinch-and-loops
for a couple of days. LOL

But after being too rough with the first box and wrecked it completely,
then doing some first aid stuff on my thomb, I got the second box right
(without blood stains LOL) and could proceed with the envelope step...
and finally finish 'Operation:Packing'.

So my #32 'Good Times Mini-Damsel's will go TOMORROW.

Mel,
So why do you say that? Is it Wacki-Pedia this time? Please
expound. Curious minds want to know.
How does one go about classifying & qualifying fly-fishing and
all of the cross-over styles?
I know some game & fish guys, and they say that fly-fishing only
waters is a 'can of worms' and is open to interpretation and
cross-over style arguments.

Guys fish with a spinning outfit, a bubble, and an adams fly.
Fly-fishing? ( No)

Guys fly-rod fish with a weighted Mr. Twister plastic grub with
a hackle wound around the grub body part. Lure-fishing? (Yes)
Guy in Yellowstone 'flyfishing only' water uses 'foam fly'
impregnated with velveta cheese. Illegal bait-fishing? (Yes)

I can fish my hair mice with a spinning outfit or a fly rod.
If I'm in Yellowstone on 'flyfishing only' water, I /better/ be

using a fly rod.

'Can of Worms?' You bet. Game & Fish enforcement quandry. You

bet.

Would be interested in your views for a 'writing the fishing

rules' perspective.

Over the years we've had several discussions on what
makes a fly a fly and a lure a lure. It's pretty well
summed up below in a piece from Wikipedia.

If it takes a fly rod and fly line to cast it, it's a
fly. If it takes the weight of the lure to cast it, its
a lure. Therefore fly rods cast flies and spinning /
casting rods cast lures. In fly fishing, fish
 are caught by using
artificial flies
 that are
cast with a fly rod
 and a fly
line. The fly line (today, almost always coated with
plastic) is heavy enough in order to send the fly to the
target. This is one of the main differences between
spinning and bait rods, which use the weight of the
lure to cast lures, and a weight on the line to cast
bait, etc

Artificial flies can vary dramatically in all
morphological characteristics (size, weight, colour,
etc.). Artificial flies are created by tying hair, fur,
feathers, or other materials, both natural and
synthetic, onto a hook with thread. The first flies were
tied with natural materials, but synthetic materials are
now very popular and prevalent. The flies are tied in
sizes, colours and patterns to match local terrestrial
and aquatic insects, baitfish, or other prey attractive
to the target fish species.

  Casting - Flies vs Lures

Unlike other casting

methods, fly fishing can be thought of

So what I'm proposing is I send Hans a set of flies and when his arrive

They are all great flies, this is a style we don't tye all the time,

[VFB] Sowbug done and am home

2010-03-22 Thread Peggy Brenner
I arrived home very early this morning, we had decided to head east and
then north to avoid the threatened snow and rain. Got out of Tennessee
before the windscreen got wet, and just a little.

Each year I have a little more fun and meet more folks at Sowbug, on
Saturday I think I completed 2 flies. The rest was spent visiting with
folks, and I got several nice pelts from Denny at Conranch Hackle, his
JV hens make up great soft hackles, the proof was in many rainbows from
the White River before departing.

At all of the shows I've tied at this year I've noticed a new trend;
ladies and kids starting out on the adventure called fly tying and
fishing. It appears this bad economy has cemented the family unit and
created the need to streamline activities. So, if they already have a
set of camping gear and some fishing, they are adding a little more.

It's time to rest and unpack, the rains just caught up with me.

I think my Silverado is a proven fishing car, with it's Sat radio, back
seat, cap, heat and air, 16.2 MPG for 1800 miles and it can take me to
conclaves at a speed faster than the Mass Pike cops think it's traveling
at during the early morning hours when I leave and return. Valentine
makes the best detector made, usually I get trouble in small towns I
don't know about, but occasionally on the highways.

If you do 24-29 hours from Boston to Mountain Home you are at risk for
a ticket.

Also, a sweet machine is a 3 series BMW wagon, early 2000's nice, sweet
to own and in a pinch a great fishing car, I've tracked and fished from
mine in the same day!

Chuck, the material looks and sounds like what they make holding tanks
for campers out of, and there is a sealant for those, found at shops

Wally world has a section near automotive for this stuff.

Our fishing camp is a Winnebago, and you do have to be handy with one of

environmentally safe lest a poop fall on the ground, or gosh gray water

Chuck being vented means there is a little screw in the top
of fill cap. You screw in down to seal tank when not being
used loosen when running motor. You squeeze the bulb in line
until hard start you,r motor and away you go you don't have

Fishing season opened, perfect weather, and yesterday was the open house
of Eldredge Brothers, Cape Neddick, Maine, one of New Englands finest
and oldest fly shops. It was nice to see all the manufacturers reps
there with rods, reels. They were for the most part absent from our
local FF shows due to cost of booth space. Maybe that will change next
year, or are shop open houses and one day shows the way of the future.

[VFB] SWAP ANNOUNCEMENT Tandem Streamers

2010-06-21 Thread Peggy Brenner
I just finished 10 dozen for a dentist, and he had great fishing on a
trip to Maine.

Let's test everyones talent here, if you are in a area where only one
hook is allowed, to fish them you can cut the forward hook short and
it's similar to a articulated fly. Wings, of any material, jungle cock
eyes not a major requirement. Let's go 10 tyers and flies due December
15, 2010.

Also, if anyone needs a cheat sheet on how to tie these up, I'll make
something up and email it out. I just like to see guys and gals step out
of the box and try something new.

Re: [VFB] Hook Co-op swap like the Whiting Co-op swap- suggestion

2010-07-15 Thread Peggy Brenner
Let me take another look at the web site tomorrow, took a quick tour and
they do look good. I knew Lava Lace was sold last year and have now
refound the source ;-)

But I do find the idea of a swap good and will offer to meister, I have
a good scale for the job.

Peggy B

Don Ordes wrote:

*GANG,*

The dry-fly hooks I'm looking at are priced @ $30.71 per
*1000*. General hook prices range for different styles from $20 to $60
per 1000. The $60 ones (per 1000) are the long sweep nymph-hooks in the
#4 size, which would be expected. I think the most expensive I see are
#1 long streamer hooks @ $0.12 per hook. They are provided by
Larva-Lace, so it's not some fly-by-night company.

That's rediculously inexpensive @ .03 to .06 cents per hook. Grab your
calculators, these are inexpensive, but they have to be bought in bulk.

Bags of 25 hooks are $3.50 or more at the shops, which is 1.75 cents per
hook & up.

If someone could meister a swap similar to the co-op swap for the
Whiting hackles like we did, then each person could buy a $30+/- bag
(avg. cost) of hooks. Ten people could join and buy a pre-perscribed
bag- size and style, from a most used/wanted list. Depending on how
many hooks you need, you could buy in at more than one group. Then the
meister could divide the bags into tenths and we'd each have 100 each of
10 different size hooks for $40* (total cost).

1. The meister would need to be someone with some time on his/her hands
that has the time to count out or weigh out the hooks. An accurate
postage scale would be sufficient to divide hooks out by weight rather
than count, and that would save a lot of time. The scaled counts may be
a couple of hooks off, but at .03 cents a hook, who cares? Boxes of 100
hooks used to be off by that much.

2. Each person would buy a hook per size from Hagen's and drop-ship
them to the meister.

*3. Each person will send postage for the weight (to e determined after
divvying one group up) of the selection in a SASE envelope plus 10 small
baggies to make it easier on the meister. They could include a *tip*
for the meister for his/her efforts. A *$3 tip* from nine swappers
would pay the meister's hooks off as a payment for the efforts. So add
$3 + $2 S&H, + $35 for the hooks, and the investment would be $40.

So a $40 investment will net you *1000 hooks* of 100 each of 10 sizes.
That's a lot of hooks to tie up. That's .04 cents per hook. *As
swapmeister, you'd get your hooks for almost free for your investment in
time.* You may, although, get called strange names, being a hookermesiter.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? If you are still on the list, this is where
the VFB has been an opportunity in the past- bulk buying strength. The
Whiting co-op swaps were very successful. Now that Byard is no longer
involved, we are not competing against his shop, or else this would go
through him for some profit to him.

If you all order a catalog with your hook purchase, this hook swap may
just be the beginning of bulk-swaps as they offer all kinds of stuff at
whole-sale prices. I called Hagen's and they are fine with this
arrangement.
I'd also join up for a saltwater hook swap.

*Lure-makers* take note as the catalog has much for you. You could set
up a /lure-component swap/ and get bulk material prices even tough you
are not a retail shop.

*Fresh-water dry-fly/wet-fly group: *(hooks to be determined: dry-fly,
wet-fly, egg, scud)

and get free hooks)

Don Ordes wrote:
LOL, well I for sure don't want to buy 1000 of ALL of the ones I listed.
(not right now anyway)
*Those were just my most-wanted ones.*

*Green is a duplicate of ones I wanted for swapping.*
700B could be used as a parachute emerger dry fly.

*For this to work, though, everyone has to agree on /10 styles & sizes/,*

*so that they would get 1/10th of each 1000 hook bag.*
/*That's why I sent in 10 picks. I won't get all of the ones I want, but
I buy one of the bags.*/

If you only pick one, then what are the other 9 that you'll be getting
100 of?
What can you use for your type of fishing?

*Remember the Whiting Co-op swap:*
Had to have 5 swappers pick 5 different saddles to divide up (I thing it
was 5). Then you got 1/5th of each saddle- variety vs bulk and much
better pricing than the 10-paks. *But these were dry-fly saddles all,*
a narrow range for a particular fly. Byard picked out lots of 5 by
requests and availabily, like midge saddles, and 5 co-oppers signed up
for each set. If you didn't want midge hackles or dry fly hackles, this
was not your swap.

That's why I had a narrow window of *trout hooks*, but I could branch
out with other hooks I can use.

*Rick needs to evaluate* the requests and negotiate the *most favored
hooks*. Swappers must give a range and not be too dead set. Once he has
10 hooks styles in 10 sizes that 10 swappers agree on, he has a complete
co-op swap. I will donate some hooks to Rick and some flies and make
sure he has enough $$$ for S&H to make it worth his while.

Hardest part- 10 swappers settle on 10 hook models and sizes.
Send Rick the average cost of all hooks (once settled), so that you
don't buy 1000 expensive hooks and get 900 less expensive hooks back.

Pay with Paypal or direct to Rick.
Send Rick a SABox with postage to be determined by Rick. Include in box
whatever for Rick's efforts.

End result is that you'll have 10 bags of 100 hooks of styles and sizes
you want (1000 total) for around $45.
My 'tip' to Rick will be a 5-hook kick-back of each size. Fair enough
for the work he'll do.

Once we work out the bugs, this method should work out as well as the
Whiting swaps did.
And there's no reason we can't do another Whiting Co-op swap, even is
Byard is on a different venture right now.

Saltwater SS hooks should be a separate swap for those in salt water.

I'm dreadfully behind, but my red bum ants will be off, I'll just finish

during the big side walk sale at Orvis and open house at the museum.

I started them last weekend at the Catskill museum as featherbed tyer.

[VFB] opossum fur for dubbing source

http://www.paradisefibers.net/Possum-Spinning-Fiber-p/47151.htm

Check this out, ever since the rope dub swap I've been searching for a
source of the dubbing I used. It was a old box from Al Neimic of
Chicopee, MA, but I noticed a little lable about possum blend.

This fiber place has all sorts of wools, and fibers from different
animal, I think it could be a dubbing source.

Has anyone tried blending and dying?

Re: [VFB] OT 60 years

2010-12-23 Thread Peggy Brenner

Congratulations to both of you!!

And now I'll give the feminine side of why anyone can make it to 60
years. Dot would know this as well as the many other wives who have
been married to the same man for a long time. You see we knew when we
met you that you would have many hobbies and life changes until you
reached true adulthood, at about 60. Meanwhile we get a almost new
personality in our lives on a regular basis and this creates a fresh
outlook on the marriage. However, this doesn't work if more than the
eye wanders.

And there is a reverse, where she has the many lives and grows up at 60.

[VFB] Blizzard in New England-tying room cleanup

it is a coastal storm with snow, just over a foot. The winds came today

Good day to clean the fly tying room and sort materials.

I've put some spare stuff on ebay, including Gudebrod thread, seller id
is bluegill1441

Now to finish the clean out, I put everything in a different room and am
resorting the bins, and updating the spreadsheet, I had quads of some
items, so it is time to downsize back to the original room size.

Re: [VFB] VFB Alive and Well

2011-01-02 Thread Peggy Brenner
Well, said Larry, and this is what I've found to be the reason for the
growth of online clubs for fly tying and fishing.

Some of these local clubs welcome you with open arms till they find
out you don't want to volunteer for a second job there. Some of our
local TU clubs have 3-4 positions unfilled, but at the same time you
feel like you have crashed a family wedding.

And FFF NEC has nothing for members in the greater Boston area, nor do
they seem interested in starting anything.

So, here's to VFB, long live and let's welcome the new. I think
everyone should try to get to Sowbug at least once, maybe twice, it
takes that long to hit good water for the great fishing.

I'll be starting up some swaps for 2011 this week, putting the final
thought into them.

I think they are all coming from the same factory, the printing is

but the minimum order is $1000 us.At Somerset and Marlboro there were at
least 4 vendor booths selling the whole line offered by BTI sports of
Taiwan, so I think lot's of folks had the money. They offer tools, rods
and reels, lines, boxes and everything you need.

I have had a C @ F threader box break in a suitcase, and they don't
replace them. I just think the 'white box' imports are going to hurt
the local shop, but they have been ordering the same items for years and
charging full cost for them.

I've taken each set, with the location of the tyer, to show off at the

tyer's of this genre have a great time looking, and we get some good
comments. But, they also have a great time looking at the different
variations in the participants flies and where that tyer is from.

So let's make it 12 for the Catskill Flies Swap 2011 and when I tie in
the Museum in August at the Jubilee celebration I'll put out each years
swap for display. Deadline June 1, in time for dry fly season in the

use all the tips on a saddle you can't use the rest for streamers.

2. Is it OK to rope-dub the body with soft segments, rather than the
smooth dubbed bodies I see in the pictures.

this is a great opportunity to use rope dubbing, I know Mary Dette uses
what she calls a noodle dub, different technique but soft segments.

3. I want to use speckled Cd'L for the tails and speckled champagne
badger hackles, so nothing on the fly will be truly original, but it
will be tied like the original.
I'll use these, have bunches of CDC from a spanish guy I sat next to at
symposium, nice specks on the tails.

They could be 'Neuvo Catskill' dry flies, traditional but new.

And a chance to try out our dry fly skill's, for myself I usually tie up
large streamers, so this is a test run.

Some very interesting things:

* The flies are tied by Elsie Darbee, look at the proportions!
  The hackles are oversized.
* Look at the American March Brown: Rope dubbed? At least clear
  segmentation in an dubbed body!
* Flies have no wings

Let's try to stay to the style of tying, I use the over size hackle on
lots of my dries, and another experiment I have done is a small colored
post, no wing, just hackle. A visual aid for keeping the fly in sight
while fishing it.

Peggy

On 2/17/2011 5:12 PM, Don Ordes wrote:

Good site, Rene,
What I noticed right off is fly proportions. The hooks are short shank
and the hackles are easily twice as long as the hook gap, which is
greater that the suggested 1.5x the gap.
I realize that hackles back then were neck hackles almost exclusively,
and the feather shanks were thick and the barbs were longer and less
dense than today's genetics, which they started. The hackles portion,
therefore is much longer and more dense that needs to be if tied with
saddle hackles. Those samples are about 50/50 body to hackle, and my
flies are usually 60/40 or less on the hackle, with the hackles 1.5
times the hook gap.
Many of those flies have segmentation created by using quills and other
hard materials.
So my question to Peggy is 'Do you want to make it a /traditional swap/,
mimicking those examples, or can we modify those materials and proportions?

Hi List,

for Peggy's swap, someone asked about what catskill flies are. I
found this page on faol:

http://flyanglersonline.com/features/oldflies/part359.php

Some very interesting things:

* The flies are tied by Elsie Darbee, look at the proportions!
  The hackles are oversized.
* Look at the American March Brown: Rope dubbed? At least clear
  segmentation in an dubbed body!
* Flies have no wings

the light cahill is a very nice choice, later today I'll get out some
reference materials and put out a list of suggested patters. I have the
new Mike Valla book, it's very nice indeed.

"Catskill flies" for Peggy's swap.. I didn't know, so I assumed that something
like the very traditional pattern of a Light Cahill would be acceptable. I have tied
this before (with some slight variations) and could do it without buying more materials.
As it turns out, the Light Cahill is the first one listed on the website you found. Pure
luck. Thanks for the information, and I will take it as an affirmation of my random
choice.

To remedy this situation I'm taking a lesson in putting a watermark on
all my photos this Saturday.

Several years ago I went to Conclave in Colorado with someone who
proceeded to use all pictures of the fish I caught on their blog as
their own, with no credit to me as the catcher of the beautiful browns.

And take a couple of patterns of my original variation and call it their
own, end of friendship. End of my Credit card for travels.

I hate folks who have to 'borrow' to make themselves look better,

bobbin, the one with the black rubberish part to hold the bobbin in it.

Hi VFB!

A question: I am in the market for a fly tying bobbin holder that is
meant to handle those small stainless steel spools made for sewing machines.

In looking over the various manufacturers' catalogs, I see a confusing
array of bobbin holders: some labeled "small" or "midge" but none
saying specifically that a sewing machine spool can be held by these
without some wire bending, Rube Goldberg inventiveness.

Budget is also a consideration. Ceramic tips would also be nice.

What do you recommend as a value-priced bobbin holder meant for the
small sewing machine spools?

Any other alternatives or suggestions other than going that route?

Re: [VFB] Catskill Swap 2011 /getting tying gigs

2011-02-24 Thread Peggy Brenner
For this one two members of the Alaska Fly Fishers were at a Women's Fly
Fishing Festival for IWFF and they took part in a class I taught on
Clouser Minnow's. Thirty Five gals came to class, six with experience,
and all left with successfully tied Minnows vowing to take up tying as
a new element of their fishing.

So they went back and convinced the BOD I would be a great asset to have
on their team for FurRondy, it's a big festival to mark the honorary
start of the big dogsled race.

[VFB] Alaska Report

2011-03-07 Thread Peggy Brenner
I'm still in the largest state, and not yet frozen to death. I've spent
several day s with members of the Alaska Fly Fishers Association and
this is a great club, big, 150 members at a meeting in Anchorage
tonight and I doubt they all came over to hear my talk about fly
fishing in New England.

We gave out the awards for the fly tying contest I judged, 9 junior
entries, and the winner was 6 and very good! In the 6-16 group we had a
dozen nice entires and lot's of adults. Overall the entries were of
high quality, and the choices of flies for each division were really
good, not all the usual.

I introduced feather wing streamers to 22 members on Saturday and on
Wednesday we head north so I can do all this in Fairbanks.

Inbetween this got to see the Iditarod take off, and may get to fish the
Kenai is open in places.
When I get back I'll update everyone on the swaps I'm meistering and get
tying my own flies.

Clousers arrived in New Hampshire and nice they are.

Thank you Jerry for making the arrangements, and I'll photograph the
swap to start up my new web site swap page. I found a local young
housewife who does web design as a at home job while watching over 3
young children locally.

i own a couple of shares in a water utility company and this is being
discussed as a viable way to get water to these desert areas that are
way to populated, of course there are profits to be made as well.

very thing. They built the Hoover dam in 1931 I think it was, and
created Lake Mead, which gives most of the South West, including Los
Angeles, Las Vegas etc, it's water supply for 90% of their water. Yet,
since 1999 (partly because of population explosions in the area, and
partly cause of draughts) the water level in Lake Mead had DROPPED get
this 130 FEET. And it's still dropping. And he had this water dept big
wig woman talking about the problem and they were talking about how we
have well over 600 MILES of the Alaskan oil pipeline, and THOUSANDS of
miles of Natural gas lines running from Texas all over the US. So, they
were saying "why don't we built water lines, to take water from where
there is too much (like where you are, and all through the mid west) and
pipe it over and into Lake Mead etc, to where there is a shortage of
water?? Makes sense to me. Ppl say "well, that cost too much". But look
at what the cost to this country will be when probably 20-50 MILLION ppl
who rely on water (and electrical power cause of the huge turbines that
run there) from Lake Mead and other lakes in that part of the country,
are suddenly out of water, and they all move "back east". What a mess
we'd have on our hands, and we'd better fix the problem while we can,
and I think the idea of "diverting water from flooded area, to those in
draught areas" makes perfect sense. Then, later, if Lake mead ever
flooded, and the Midwest was in a draught, the water could just be
reversed. Chuck

Hi Guys

this list may not have gotten notice directly, but through other lists,

As many of you already know (and responded) I have been running a
fundraising project to get my butt to Japan for a unique opportunity of
studying with a Master Gyotaku Printmaker.

Current status is this : 4 Days left to the fundraising period, project
is 32% funded. The whole thing has been a learning process, to be sure.
My goal with this email is to give notice that

this is likely the last chance for any procrastinator types (of which I
am one) who wished to participate in the fund drive to do so. It should
be noted that Pledges are rewarded with similar value groups of

works of Art, as described at the project site, so rather than outright
begging, its more like advance promotion of sales with a dedicated use.
(or at least that's what I what I tell myself)

The down side to the arrangement is that unless the project is funded at
100%, none of the pledges are collected so its kind of all or
nothing. I have been focusing my pestering and reminders primarily on
Facebook, with a video

on YouTube ( apparently in the non-viral Japanese section ) :^)

Anyway, much thanks to you guys that took a chance on me and made a
pledge, no matter what the outcome, and for those that time has gotten
away from... its not too late..

there is always hope!

heres the site:

go there and look around a bit either way. Check out the Pledge rewards
to see the what the real deal is!

See some of you next week probably
