Past comes back to haunt me...help

2002-06-09 Thread dan_A

Hello all-
I'm new to this list and I have a peculiar problem.

I recently took my old IIci out of mothballs. I had gotten an
ethernet card for 5.95 on ebay and also picked up a hub. I plan to
use it for email. After setting it up with the right software, using
the Pickle's faq, (I'm on the compact mac list as well as the
SuperMac list) I ran into my own history. Sometime in 1990, I had
passworded the IIci and in order to mount the IIci or the SuperMac, I
need to supply the pw. I tried everything I thought I might have used
but cant hit the right one. Everything else appears to be working.
Anyone know what prefs or what else I can dump or change to get
around this problem? This is frustrating and I don't know how to get
around it. I used Net Install ZM-1.5 to work with sys 7.5.3 on the
IIci. The computer I'm networked to is a Umax S900, with os 9.1 and
is upgraded to G4 and 1gb of ram. Both computers see each other in
their choosers but are asking for passwords.

help!

Thank you.

I'm talking about file sharing I guess. I can't change the pw without
putting in the old one. I tried tossing the file sharing prefs and
restarted. It produced no change. Asking for the pw happens when I go
to the chooser and choose Appleshare, which is on the ethernet. I can
see the other computer show up in the chooser window as it should-
and when I hit ok I get the password window for that computer. Thank
you for your quick response.

I don't remember if I ever had the 7.5.3 disk. I think I upgraded via
downloads and I have had non of that software for years. I do think
that a clean install would work and I do have a sys 8.0 disk but I'm
working with 32mgs of ram on the IIci and I dont know if it will
install and run okay. I also have a non Apple cd player attached to
the IIci that needs its extension to become available so I would not
be able to start up with the os 8 cd. I used to have that problem all
the time and went thru contortions to get new system os's on. The cd
player is an old "Spirit" machine, and is so slow that it probably
runs at -1 speed.

Okay. Great! I could take that path. I'm removing some other prefs to
see if I can worm around the problem. I just dumped 3 items: Apple
talk prefs, Users and Groups Data file and AppleShare prep. Naturally
I couldn't open the chooser so I'll try putting them back one at a
time, alone and see what I get. Thanks again. I'll keep the list
posted.

When I opened the chooser it said apple talk couldn't be opened-that
there was a component missing and promptly quit. BUT-- in fooling
around I was able to enter and confirm a new password on the IIci. It
then reverted to the old one when I tried to use it. So I put back
the AppleShare prep pref and restarted. Then I went to the S900 and
IT TOOK the NEW PASSWORD!!! Weird but good. So I was able to mount
the 2 IIci drives on the S900. Next hurdle, to get Eudora on the IIci
to use the cable modem along with the S900. It say that another
machine is using the...???

Thank you all, especially the pickle. You guys are great and have
heart as well as knowledge.

Thanks Ed

I did try to do both things-create new user or even go on as guest-
setting the IIci to allow a guest to log on. I also tried to change
pw. The IIci wouldn't allow a pw change without putting in the old
one. And I could not make it accept a new user or a guest. It kept
going to default no matter what I highlighted. The final solution as
you might have read was to pull some pref files: I just dumped 3
items: Appletalk prefs, Users and Groups Data file and AppleShare
prep. which allowed me to change pw. I then put back what I needed,
Appleshare prep to operate and it worked.

Thanks again

Hi pickle!

I have a similar problem. I'm using 7.53 on a IIci with an ethernet
card attached to a hub -Netgear 104- which has a cable modem plugged
into it along with a Umax S900. I can mount the IIci drives on the
Umax and can get into files, but when I try to use Eudora or Netscape
(or iCab) I can't make a connection. I tried installing OT 1.0.8,
which seems like the oldest version I can find. It wont install on a
IIci. Is there anything else that I can install that will allow me to
set DHCP?

Hi Fran

Although I am in the same boat as you in not being able to use the
cable modem through my IIci, I did manage to set up a network that
works using ethernet.

I used ethernet because the cable is connected to my ethernet port on
my SuperMac s900 which is running OS 9.1 with a G4 upgrade processor.
The IIci is running OS 7.5.3, which is the highest OS that you can
put onto the machine with its OEM processor, and which to date
doesn't like Open Transport which is the other component that enables
the IIci to get on the Internet with a cable modem. Right now I am
trying to find a copy of OT 1.0 and then 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 which I am
told I can install and subsequently upgrade. OT 1.0, a buggy and old
version is made for Nubus machines and OS 7.5.3. That's what I need
to find first. If anyone has a link to, or a copy of these versions
of open transport and wants to email it to me, I would sure
appreciate it.

To get files back and forth between the 2 machines I did this:

I got a Nubus ethernet card for the IIci on ebay for $5.00 plus
shipping. I also got a Netgear EN104 4 port Hub on ebay for $9.00
plus shipping. This enabled me to connect the cable modem, and the 2
macs. (I also bought 2 ethernet cables -CAT5E RJ45 UTP NETWORK PATCH
CABLE GRAY-to the lengths I needed)

Then you have to set up your IIci control panel-mac/tcp to the
ethernet, turn file sharing on in both machines, go to the chooser
and select appleshare. You should then be able to mount the drives of
one computer onto the other.

I hope this explains the setup, at least roughly, to you and maybe
gets us a connection to OT versions.

The Apple archives don't have these older versions of Open Transport,
OT 1.0.8 is the oldest and still too new to install on OS 7.5.3.

Can't restart IIci

2002-07-30 Thread dan_A

--
Can't restart IIci

Hi list-
My computer was working well. I'm using 7.5.3, I have the original
drive that I use for start up and a 2gb external with a duplicate OS.
There is a supermac video card, cache card, an ether net card and 32
mb RAM. I had gotten rid of a 17" NEC monitor (stupidly) and am now
running an apple 14" off the built-in card. The SuperMac doesn't seem
to like the 14".

As I said everything was running and I even had the IIci operating on
my network. Then...I tried to force a start from the external drive
using a key combination which killed something. The keys were shift,
option, command, delete...which I use on my S900. Now I can't
restart. I tried zapping the PRAM and got no zapping activity. When I
start, the monitor lights to white (just a flicker) and then back to
black. I hear what sounds like a hd crackle for a few seconds and
then just the fan. I disconnected the external SCSI and ethernet
card. No help. I removed the video card, no difference. Tried to
start from 7.5 floppy (disk first aid)-no activity. Took the machine
apart, cleaned it, changed the original battery, checked to see if
all the ram and cards were seated, put it together and nothing. I
don't know if I fried something or I'm missing something simple or
what. Any ideas out there? Thanks for any help.

I tried Just the option key. No go. I reconnected the monitor to the
SuperMac card (The info printed on the card says J3 U1 2. I've long
forgotton the model number since I bought the machine new in 1989?
and reactivated it a few months ago.) and held down the space

with the SuperMac card removed, prior to the battery change and
couldn't zap the PRAM then. Right now I still have the monitor
attached to the SuperMac card... did I fry something?

I still have not had any success in starting up. Are there any other
ideas out there? This IIci is still a good machine and I would really

The RAM hasn't been touched for some years. I believe it's 8 slots of 4mb each.
I'll take the card back out. Any idea why I can't even zap the PRAM?
I was thinking of trying something else... I have a S900 Umax clone
with a Sonnet G4 processor which came with an emergency PRAM Restpre
floppy, which has gotten me out of trouble on that machine. It has OS
7.5 on it with disk first aid and Apple Drive Setup. Think theres
anything dangerous trying that? Or do you know of a similar piece of
software that I could try. I couldn't boot from a sys 7.5 floppy.

ok.. here's what happens when I hit the startup key:
I get a single chime, The power light has gone on, there is some
whirring & clicking of the hd trying to start. That stops after about
12 seconds. Then all you can hear is the fan. Also at the hitting of
the startup key the monitor when connected to the built-in video card
flashes for a fracton of a second then returns to black screen. When
it's plugged into the Supermac card, it stays black.

I removed the video card which I had done before, and I removed the cache card.

You hit it Donn, It started up with cache card out. Now I'm going to
reattach the external SCSI chain and plug in the ethernet cable. Is
there a way to test cache card? I guess sticking it back in will give
part of that answer. I'll keep you posted. Thanks all for your help

Yes, no start with it back in and startup with it out again.

Eudora conflicts?

2002-08-31 Thread dan_A

--
Hi All-

I recently upgraded my IIci with a Sonnet Presto 040 card. I also
have the IIci on my cable network. Prior to installing the 040, I had
Eudora problems (V3.01). I was able to get on line with ICab but no
matter what I did to the Eudora settings I kept getting this error
message:

"Error involving Domain Name System. -23009 There are already 64 TCP
or UDP streams open. (tcp:544)".

Eudora opened but could not send or receive.

Now. after upgrading my DI-604 router firmware, when I try to just
open Eudora, it crashes the machine. Anyone know of specific
conflicts--040 card or its software with Eudora 3.01???
Any versions of Eudora or other email client that works with sys
7.5.3 and 040 card? Or does experience say that the problem lies
elsewhere? Any help or questions appreciated. Thanks.

It is the lite version. I didn't see a 3.1.3L version on the FTP site

I had this exact symptom when I hooked up an old VGA monitor to my
IIci. The way I was able to get around it was to use an adapter
between the monitor cable and the computer's monitor port. This
adaptor has dip switches on it and by finally choosing the right
combination (the switch combinations are marked on the reverse side
of the adapter) I was able to get rid of the double functioning
images. I don't know if this will help you but the problem might be
in the differences in the wiring of the pins and the port. Perhaps
someone else on the list can suggest a specific adapter or cable.

Lots of luck

I've used HP ink jets and now I'm on my second Epson (1250) which
prints up to ledger size. The photo quality on "Premium Gloss Photo"
paper is professional quality far far better than anything that I
ever got from an HP ink jet. I sometimes leave it on without using it
for a few weeks and most often it's not used for days and when I put
it into action it self cleans before it prints; it all depends on
your major usage. I don't work for epson.

More expensive than RRs...

I don't know if anyone is interested in more info about what Marten
mentioned about vintage macs printing hi res files thru RIP's. I was
part of that commercial environment and had some years of experience
with that type of "skittery" system. We started buying that kind of
equipment when the SE/30 came out (if I remember correctly) and
graduated to the IIci. We had 2 $75,000 B/W scanners with their RIPs.
If you put pages together in Quark Xpress with Ilustrator or
Photoshop images you had to be very careful about using too much
rotated art or placing improperly trimmed images. The RIPs didn't
like to process all that info and often would not. We sometimes
ripped documents for other Ad Agencies and some Publishing companies,
who often used Pagemaker, which created a lot of problems for the
RIPs. At that time we were outputting Black and White files. For
color work we used a Scitex (owned by an outside service) which was
down to $800,00 dollars from its original million dollar price tag.
So the equipment was very expensive and extremely slow and didn't
respect non expert users. It was very exciting to grow up in that
world. In the mid nineties I had the experience of outputting very
large color images from S900's to Windows NT RIPs, to 36" wide
inkjet printers. Incredible speed and quality, for a fraction of the
prior costs. So printing color from vintage Macs is possible but
would be very very very slooow.

Trying To Recover From a IIci Crash!

2002-10-31 Thread dan_A

--
Having a problem with my 11ci. While doing a network transfer from
my S900 it crashed. When I tried to restart the external 1Gb drive
(which is my startup drive) came up but the internal drive didn't
appear and couldn't be accessed by Norton, Disk Warrier, Disk First
Aid. I removed the external SCSI chain and the 040 processor card. No
luck. Unfortunately I have an old non Mac cd player and can't start
up without the enabling "Spirit" extension. I tried zapping the PRAM
several times. All I got from this was a worse situation; the
external startup drive would now only come up when the shift key was
depressed. If I didn't hold the key down I get a startup smile face
which then goes to chimes of death, black screen, scowling mac. So I
dumped finder prefs, N.G. I took all the control panels and
extensions out of their folders and got the black screen. I took the
folders out and let the sys make new ones. Black screen. I tried
access with old software on floppies but they come up as unreadable.
I also tried using a CDRW drive hoping that I could get startup from
a Norton or DiskWarrier CD, since the drive has the Apple ROMS. No
success. So I have no access to the remaining external drive except
with all the inits off.

My specific question, aside from my choking cry for help is: What
else besides the control and extension folders does the shift key
depressed cancel out? I remove all the extensions, cps and their
folders and still can't get a startup if the extension key is not
held down? The key is seemingly canceling something else that's
corrupted.

Any ideas will be very appreciated and I hope there are some, because
I'm out of them at this moment.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply. I'm using sys 7.5.1 on the IIci. I didn't trash
the cp and extension folder's contents. I moved them to the desktop
and tried adding some back that would enable me to mount a cd or get
on the network. The thing is, that even the empty folders in the sys
folder crashed the machine. I have to look to see if there are any
loose inits in the sys folder. Is 7.5.1 an OS that tolerates loose
inits? The 040 card is a Sonnet, which is one of the first things
that I removed. Made no difference. I also tried using
MountEverything software which indicated hardware damage to the
internal drive. This whole thing resulted from a crash... or a crash
resulted from a hardware glitch. If I can get to the internal drive I
would be able to see if I can restore the volume or at worst create a
new volume. But right now I need to repair the software on the
external drive which disk warrior (installed on that same drive
unfortunately) indicates to be very out of sync (my words).

At this point I don't remember if I pulled those 2 specific prefs--I
did pull the finder and some others individually. Then in order to
know if pulling any of the prefs would make a difference I put the
entire folder on the desktop. It did not stop the "restart without
the shift key crash". I also checked the system folder for loose
extensions and found one, the "finder scripting extension, which I
pulled along with the cp and extension folder again. Still could only
startup with shift key down. Uhmm, I just thought (sometimes I'm
slow) to pull the external drive and attach it to another computer. I
only have 9.1 on my other machine but I should be able to put
DiskWarrier and Norton on the case and see if the system is
repairable. Talk to you all later. Still may need some ideas on this.

I did get MountEverything and Anubus to see the drive and report no
volume can be found on it. I'm going to try and fix the external by
attaching it to the S900 and use DiskWarrier and Norton if necessary
to see if I can fix that software. If I'm successful then I will be
able to use Norton to try to recover the internal drive volume on the
IIci. When I pulled the 040 processor, the ethernet card and the
external SCSI chain I was able to see the internal drive begin a
spinup and the disk light (diode?) flashing. But it would not get
past that and I had no way to get to it with any software tools.

I'm using a SuperMac card Spectrum/24 series III, v 1.1 in my IIci.
It is controlled by a SuperVideo 2.7.4 cp which give the option for

I use a "standard" connector and not a BNC type and no problems.

changing HD in a IIci

2002-12-03 Thread dan_A

--
Hi List

A few months ago I changed a battery in my IIci so I have the
experience of removing the power supply, drive bay pillar and drives.
This was not easy because of the difficulty in pulling the power
supply. Recently the internal HD went kaput and I want to replace it.
The question is: is it necessary to pull the power supply to remove
the hard drive which is on top of everything? It looks accessible but
is it? Sorry for the basic question but I've not done this in a
IIci. Thanks for any info.

Dan,

I recently had similar problems in two different machines. I was able
to save one and could not save another. It's possible that the
problem is software or hardware related. If you have a copy of Norton
Utilities on a CD you can start up with that and see if Nortan Disk
Doctor can see the drive. If not you can go to the menu bar and look
for "mount custom disks" and try that. If you can get to the disk
that way you might be able to repair it. You can also try DiskWarrier
which is great for recovery but is not good at finding some damaged
disks. In addition there are a number of free utilities that are
pretty good.
You can get Mt.Everything (68kor/and PPC versions) here:
http://www.overnet.de/hhp/mte/

It's free. You can also download DataRescue which is shareware that
can find lost volumes on a disk which problem you may have. You might
be able to get it here:
http://www.wildbits.com/rescue/

Be patient- and good luck.

Hi Ted-

This is only a guess... You have to reformat or initialize the drive
using an older version of DriveSetup, one that's timely for 7.5.3. I
did something similar a few months ago. I took a 2 gig drive that had
9.1 on it, installed it where the internal 1/2 gig drive was in a
IIci. I also had an extrnal drive attached to the IIci on which I had
dragged the 7.5.3 system folder, earlier on. Using the external as a
start up and with a copy of Apple SCSI Setup, v 7.3.2 or Apple HD SC
setup v 3.0.1, I don't remember which (sorry) I formatted the 2 gig.
Took quite a while. After that I dragged the 7.5.3 sys folder onto
the 2 gig. It has been my startup drive without any problems.

I use them, I believe they are called BNC cables, for my Mitsubishi
Diabond Pro 21" monitor. I've also used them in the past for the
Barco Monitor which is a professional monitor that cost about $6,000
in '98. I would imagine that there are a number of hi-end monitors

Hi Carlos-

The Mitsubishi monitor using this cable (which has 5 leads) is
attached to an ims twin turbo 8m pci card in a Umax S900, upgraded to
a G4/450. I do all my color correction on this monitor and I'm able
to print what I see. I think the better monitors use this type of
connection-perhaps the BNC cable help make them capable of being
color balanced more accurately. I don't know if this is true but one
of the greatest monitors I've ever used or seen was the Barco. It had
a very sophisticated tuning system for color balance and distortion
control. I had six of them in the shop I ran and was able
correct/manipulate and print color images that were as seen on the
screen. This was in 96 and 97 when color management was in its
infancy. I've upgraded the S900 from a 604e/250 using sys 7.5 to a
G4/450 using 9.1 without losing the function of the monitor or card.

It can be done. I have my IIci, using 7.5.3 with 32 megs, connected
to a router, not a hub, which is connected to a cable modem via
ethernet cable. I have 2 other computers attached to the router: A
SE/30 and a S900 G4.

As others have said, you need OpenTransport. You'll need to download
versions 1.1.1 and 1.1.2, installing and upgrading them in version
order, to enable DHCP in TC/IP. You should also download the current
68k version of iCab which is a very fast browser and has all the
components you need to surf. The info to do this came from Gamba and
Pickle and others on this list. Take a look at the faq and if you
need help people will jump in and give you a hand.

You can do this with every Mac OS from 6.08 on up. Just install the

Marten is right. I have my IIci connected to my router and have only
32Megs of RAM, Sys. 7.5.3 and Open Transport 1.1.2. which you need if
your using a cable modem. It enables you to use DHCP under TC/IP which
allows the Mac to see the modem. You have to install OT 1.1.2 over OT
1.1.1. Others can jump in to explain where to get these and how to
install. The IIci is networked with a SE/30 using 7.1 and a s900 G4
