Did you order them from Amazon? I ask because here is what it says on
Amazon's site. I also hope to be able to use them on my inkjet printer as
well as my laser.

Hi Rick,
Yes, AVery 6570 are the labels I ordered. On the site it didn't say laser
or ink jet, but on the order receipt it says laser. Hopefully the package
will clearly state if it can be used in both styles of printer. I was
beginning to wonder if maybe the number like 6570 only applied to size and
we had to specify laser or Ink jet.

Thanksf for your note. I'll remain optimistic.

Re: Question about time Warner cable apps

2012-04-29 Thread Victor Hugo

Hi!
I have time Warner cable, and I just register to have access to the app on
my iPhone, it is accessible to a degree.
I was able to watch live tv, and also look at the menu of what's on, and I
can switch to shows, and movies.
I wasn't able to surf by channel, but I think because for channel guide, and
favorites, I need to have a dvr, which I don't, it looks like it would work
if I did have the dvr.
I would get a dvr if I find out about the accessibility, but it does look
promising.

Hello. I don't yet have a Time Warner cable subscription, so I don't think
I can use the app. However, I was just looking at the description. It says
that you can have the iPhone the iPod touch in the iPad act as a the TV

I have loaded apps, that when I have my ear phones plugged in,
automatically route the sound to the speaker any way. I wonder if this is
possible with Square Card, and if a suggestion to developer wouldn't be a
good idea for something like this. I know there is no relation, but the
apps with which I've noticed this feature, or possibly bug, are Zello and
Talking Carl.

In the Mail preferences on your Mac, under Composing, there is a pop-up to
select where your Notes should be saved. Also, when you have created your Note,
press command-S to update and save it. This way, you will obtain the
flexibility you want in both directions.

Re: Game Center success and quesiton

2012-04-29 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Scott,

I'm no expert and I find both Game Center and Roll it a bit quirky, but
I'm able to play over the internet fairly consistently with friends.

At one time sighted friends also sad said they had trouble finding the
accept button. I suggested changing in game Center notifications under
settings the option from banners to alertss. This seemed to help as the request
would remain available to select but with Banners it would disappear.

It took me a long time to figure out the series of steps needed to
select a friend, select the game, send a invitation, start the game and then
finally play!

sometimes you need to wait a chunk of time for a connection to happen.
sometimes for no reason a game quits telling you your partner left even though
they did not.

If the tip on alerts doesn't do it perhaps you would like to contact me off
list and we could set up a Skype contact and we could work through the steps
together.

The game is not perfect and has Somme accessibility issues and some scoring
flaws, but over all it is good fun.

Re: Digit-Eyes and Canon MP620 printer

2012-04-29 Thread Eric Caron

Hi Rick,
Yes, AVery 6570 are the labels I ordered. On the site it didn't say laser or
ink jet, but on the order receipt it says laser. Hopefully the package will
clearly state if it can be used in both styles of printer. I was beginning to
wonder if maybe the number like 6570 only applied to size and we had to specify
laser or Ink jet.

Thanksf for your note. I'll remain optimistic.

RE: messages not being moved to trash using mail app?

2012-04-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Adam,

When using many popular host provider services such as Web.com or Blue
Host.com, it is necessary to provide a path to the online Trash folder.

For whatever reason, Outlook does this automatically but Apple Mail, many
times, does not.

So, to make sure the account in question is setup correctly, do the
following.

1.
Open Apple Mail Preferences,

2.
Select the Accounts Tab.

3.
In the Account List Table area, select the Mail account in question.

4.
Select the Advanced Tab.

5.
In the iMap Path Prefix edit field, type in the word "INBOX" (without
quotes). Adam, make sure that each letter in the word INBOX is uppercase.

6.
Close the Preferences Window.

7.
I strongly suggest that you both quick the Mail application and restart your
Mac.

Hi Mark,

For some reason on one of my accounts messages once deleted give an error
saying they can't be moved to trash and stay there.

Someone said there is a setting in settings mail and callendars and advanced
for the account.

I can't work out how to change whatever is wrong.

Another account I have for the same domain

works fine.

Any ideas?

Hello,

It sounds like you might be having some difficulties issuing the up and down
flick. If your angle is off, the phone may interpret a horizontal flick. If you
are delaying, the phone may interpret a touch and will read what is under your
finger at the time.

If either of these are the case, I strongly recommend going in to setting,
general, accessibility, voice over, practice area and practice the gestures
until you can perform them accurately all the time. Using the practice area is
how I learn the specifics of each gesture.

Subject: Re: Digit-Eyes and Canon MP620 printer

Hello list,

For anyone following this small thread, I am still unsuccessful
printing Digit-Eyes labels using my Canon MP620 printer. I tried
Christina's suggestion of printing from preview and the results were the
same. Using the labels that are 30 per page they print about 1 quarter of a
Inch too high. Using my work HP laser printer with different Avery labels,
but also 30 per page, they print fine.

I ordered more labels that are a better shape for Digit-Eyes and though I
meant to get labels I could use on both Ink Jet and Laser printers, the
receipt shows they are Laser labels. Thus, I'm going to use my work
printer.

One big tip for new users like me. Once you get the labels printed they are
much easier to use if the label is almost completely clear of extra white
space. My secretary used a paper cutter to cut my labels into strips of
square Digit-Eyes labels, rather then the long rectangular shape. This made
all the difference for me concerning recognition time with Digit-Eyes. I
went from beginners frustration to efficient fast user just with that
change. The long labels left too much guess work for me to center the
camera. Though I thought I was centered I rarely was. Once I had a square
label things worked much better!

I am looking forward to trying the close to square, slightly larger, 1 and
1/4 by 1 and 3/4 quarter inch labels I ordered. I'll certainly send a
message with a update.

Best.

Yes, most definitely. Go through the step by step they have on their web
site. Finding a bar code definitely takes some practice and at first, lots
of patience. Good luck.

New Tech Doctor Podcast

2012-04-29 Thread Robert Carter
Hi All,

There is a brand new Tech Doctor podcast at
http://www.dr-carter.com

Here are the show notes.

During this hour, Robert has a fascinating conversation with, Jolie Mason, the
founder and program director of the Los Angeles Radio Reading Service. The LA
Reading Service can be heard world wide on an iOS app called
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iblink-radio/id332027117?mt=8";>iBlink
Radio
In addition to her radio reading service work, Jolie hosts a radio show on a
Los Angeles radio station
http://www.kpfk.org";>KPFK
The show is called "Access Unlimited" and can be heard online by going to the
KPFK site.

Jolie is an enthusiastic iPhone user but did express some frustration with the
fact that VoiceOver users are required to use different gestures than those
that are used by sighted iPhone users. Robert mentions a new book that teaches
iPhone VoiceOver users everything they need to know. The book is available from
the National Braille Press and is called
http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/IPHONE-IOS5.html";>Getting Started with the
IPhone and iOS 5 for Blind Users

Jolie and Robert discuss an excellent website filled with information about
Apple accessibility. The site is called
http://www.applevis.com";>Applevis

There is a new iOS, Android and PC app that allows people to voice chat with
other users of the app throughout the world. It has become very popular with
blind people. The app is called
http://www.zello.com";>Zello
One thing that can quickly become a problem is finding a particular app on your
iPhone. This problem occurs once you have dozens of apps. Jolie describes her
excellent system for organizing and categorizing all of her apps.

Finally, Jolie and Robert discuss some of their favorite apps for learning
about birds and for using the iPhone in the kitchen. Here are the links to some
really great birding apps.

RE: ShowMoney app for money identification

2012-04-29 Thread Richard Turner
I'm glad you got some good results, as I said in my previous note, it
identified a one dollar bill as a 20 and a 50, so I'm deleting it. This was
on a 4S.
However, just a note about the settings, there is an option to not have the
pictures added to your camera roll. It is set to store the photos by
default, so you have to go in and turn that off if you don't want all those
images being saved.

I tried it out with a $20 bill and it did work. It could be cleaned up some
with the buttons and streamlined, but playing around initially, it does the
job. I've got to dig around for some Euro and Mexican Peso notes to test
them, but at least with American money, bills, it does work.

Hey Molly. As I mentioned yesterday, I was unable to duplicate this here
on my phone, sense then, I've tried doing so in several different apps I
use and still can't quite figure out why your router is doing this. I
guess if it were me, I'd try several different things, at least to have
more to tell apple if I had to call in on this. I'd first try to make
sure this is happening in other areas of the phone, not only the mail
app. For example, safari, the messages app used for text/i-messaging,
even trying to spell the names of the icons located on your home screen.
I'd also try other options of the router, to see if the same thing
happens, safari would be a good start here. If your in the safari
application, does using word, line, headings, links, cause this to
happen as well?

Take care.

RE: ShowMoney app for money identification

2012-04-29 Thread Richard Turner
Don't waste your time with this app.
It alternately identified a 1 dollar bill as a 20 and a 50.
You are better off with the free EyeNote app for U.S. dollars or the latest
update to oMoby for U.S. dollars.

For other currencies, I guess we need to wait for Looktel to expand on their
current list, but at least they cover Australia, Canada, Britain and the
Euro along with U.S. money.
Not to mention the ease of use. The button identification with Show Money
is poor at best.

JMO,
Richard

Re: Digit-Eyes and Canon MP620 printer

2012-04-29 Thread Christina
Have you checked the options for your printer? Like, paper size ect. I know
my printer has options like scale or scale to fit. My printer also has the
option to print borderless. Play around a bit with these settings to make sure
it's all set to standard printing options.

Sounds cool.

If I were the NLS, and I'm most certainly not, I'd hope to have at least a

What I've heard recently is that they are still working on an app. I heard
that, at least the initial version, won't allow you to download talking
books directly to the iPhone. You will have to download them on a PC, then
move them over via syncing them, similarly to what was done with the initial
Learning Ally offering.

Rumor has it that they will be demoing it at an upcoming conference for
member librarians.

Re: Digit-Eyes and Canon MP620 printer

2012-04-29 Thread Eric Caron
Hello list,

For anyone following this small thread, I am still unsuccessful
printing Digit-Eyes labels using my Canon MP620 printer. I tried Christina's
suggestion of printing from preview and the results were the same. Using the
labels that are 30 per page they print about 1 quarter of a Inch too high.
Using my work HP laser printer with different Avery labels, but also 30 per
page, they print fine.

I ordered more labels that are a better shape for Digit-Eyes and though I meant
to get labels I could use on both Ink Jet and Laser printers, the receipt shows
they are Laser labels. Thus, I'm going to use my work printer.

One big tip for new users like me. Once you get the labels printed they are
much easier to use if the label is almost completely clear of extra white
space. My secretary used a paper cutter to cut my labels into strips of square
Digit-Eyes labels, rather then the long rectangular shape. This made all the
difference for me concerning recognition time with Digit-Eyes. I went from
beginners frustration to efficient fast user just with that change. The long
labels left too much guess work for me to center the camera. Though I thought
I was centered I rarely was. Once I had a square label things worked much
better!

I am looking forward to trying the close to square, slightly larger, 1 and 1/4
by 1 and 3/4 quarter inch labels I ordered. I'll certainly send a message with
a update.

Best.

Re: Digit-Eyes and Canon MP620 printer

2012-04-29 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Christina,

Thank you for your help. Your directions worked just fine, as far as
saving the PDF. I then tried printing from Preview but again my labels are off
by a quarter of a inch. I'm probably just going to give up and instead use
different labels at work on my HP Laser printer. I just preferred being able
to use my home printer, the canon MP620 Ink jet. this way I could print what I
need and when I need them. I also hope other users of Digit-Eyes using this
printer are not having this problem.

warmly.

Question about the Showmoney app

2012-04-29 Thread Marcos Rodrigues

Hi folks:

I downloaded the showmoney app and have some questions.

After selecting the currency I want to identify, I just see a screen with many
unlabeled botons but don't know how to take a picture of the bill to be
identified.

Did anyone manage this task?

Cheers.

Re: MP3 books on iPhone

2012-04-29 Thread Lois Butterfield
Thanks. I tried this, and control tab doesn’t work to change pages. I’m not
sure why, but it just advances me through one page.

I’ll keep playing until I get it to work.

I appreciate everyone’s suggestions.

also, you can make itunes recognize your mp3 files as audio books, or podcasts
by doing the following:
select all files that are in the book in your sources music area(in itunes).
Once all files are selected, hit control i, this will bring up a "multiple item
information " dialog box.
now control-tab until you get to the options tab. Now you can tab to the media
kind combo box, and change it to the desired media type.
now you can just tab to ok, and it will automatically sort your files in to the
correct area(in this case audio books)
I hope this helps.
Kind of wrote in a hurry, but I hope was still clear enough.

Hello Listers,

I found Game Center a challenge in itself. I am now able to use Game Center
to play roll it with friends. I'm wondering if others have found games that
they can play agains sighted or blind friends over game Center. I'm not
understanding the Game Center well enough to do a tutorial podcast so I'm
hoping someone else will.

So any Game Center Games like Roll it that work well with Voiceover?

Apple fixed the Humanware issues and broke all HIMS products and I

Now we are waiting for them to fix it again. Nobody knows when they
might see fit to do that since they have been aware of it since the day

According to many posts through the past few years, the HumanWare

conflict with iOS control command chords.

Also, the HumanWare displays are reported most often as having
bluetooth stack issues which may prevent regular and stable connection
with the iPhone.

Note: apparently, the Braille Sense displays are having connection
issues since the latest iOS upgrade. I will be able to test a Braille
Edge next week to see how well it works with my iPhone 4 and how well
it works with my Mac.

Given how often HumanWare displays have had complications with iOS
devices, I will not use one as my primary interface device until they
are connection and command stable for a couple software upgrade cycles.

to jump to the next page and place me at the start of the page. When I
pressed dots 2 4 6 spacebar, iBooks jumped to the previous page and
placed me at the top of the page.

Therefore, at least the Alva is able to fully function in iBooks
without ever needing to leave the text area. Given that the commands
are chorded with the spacebar, I suspect that other braille displays,
except maybe the humanware displays, should function similarly in iBooks.

Re: ShowMoney app for money identification

2012-04-29 Thread Grant Hardy
This looks really interesting. The description says that it
needs an internet connection to work (Looktel does not), and that
a picture has to be taken (Looktel doesn't require this; it does
the detection in realtime). Here, the app doesn't win.

Where it could win, though, is its free price tag, as well as the
fact that it boasts the detection of currencies from many
countries around the world, which is an area Looktel needs to
build upon.

2012-04-29 Thread chris hallsworth

It would be interesting to see how this compares to Looktell Money Reader.

Hello list,

I thought I'd drop a note on this app that I came across. It's currently
free. I haven't had a chance to test it out, but will be doing so a bit
later when I get home and have the opportunity to try it out with some
bills. Regardless, for free, it's worth it to check out if it's a reasonable
alternative to some of the other bill note scanners out there. The link is:

Re: messages not being moved to trash using mail app?

Hello Adam.

What a coincidence; I use Blue Host, as well. They are an excellent service.
I have been with them for over 6 years.

Hi, are you sure? I just asked because this was not always the case. You
had to show file in windows explorere or, show file in finder if using a
Mac, copy from there, then paste to the other destination. Its been a long
time since I've tried this and even longer since trying it on windows.

Thanks.
