Re: Money Reader Apps Besides Looktel Money Reader

2013-01-23 Thread Teresa Cochran
I strongly suspect humans are involved, kind of like some other similar apps.
Nothing wrong with that, but this is most likely why things are identified so
readily, and why the results can't be repeated easily.

  5. Re-Sync your iPhone

  And, enjoy

 Hi,

Yes, there is: I haven't done it for a while, but either oMoby or
NoogleNogles did it well. Hopefully it was oMoby, as NoogleNogles
doesn't exist anymore. TapTapSee may also do it, but I haven't tried.

RE: Answering a call on a iPhone 5

2013-01-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Gena,

I would suggest you take this phone back to Apple since this sounds like a
major defect. For one thing, if the screen is really locked you should be
able to touch it all day long without any sort of reaction from the phone,
after all, locked is locked and you lock it to prevent it from doing
anything. Even if Voiceover is off touching the screen when the phone is
locked won't do anything until you press either the home or power button. A
single press will bring up the "Slide to unlock" control and the camera
button at the bottom right of the screen, a double press of the home key
will also bring up playback controls, Previous, Play/Pause and Next as well
as the Airplay button if you are in range of an airplay device and the
volume control.

Good luck,
Sieghard

Hello All,

Sorry, a bit behind with my mail.

No that's it, Any slightest touch of the screen when the phone is locked
ends the call. When it's in my hand-bag or pocket I can't avoid touching
the screen.

If the phone isn't locked, I can swipe as much as I like between the
decline and answer buttons to make my selection. But if it is locked I'm
done for.

Privacy and Bluetooth Data Swapping

2013-01-23 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
While looking at Privacy settings in response to a recent query about location
services, I noticed an item concerning bluetooth information swapping or
sharing. When I tapped on that button, the screen said something about a
listing of apps which would permit sharing of information via bluetooth. I
didn't see a listing of any apps on my phone which offered such sharing, so
this got me curious. Are there apps out there which will let you share such
things as contacts, ringtones and other items with other iPhone users via
bluetooth? I used to be able to do this several years ago when my girlfriend
and I both had Nokia phones and shared ringtones and contacts pretty often. It
was pretty cool.

Hi,
You're using IOS 6, right? If so, location services has been moved from the

go into Settings and scroll to the second screen and it will be right under

However no one is ever going to fully agree on the ideal voice. Some are

there are people like me who will use what is available because
grumbling about it won't make a difference in what Apple goes with.
Since I have no better suggestion on what should be added or removed,
I'll just stick with snotty Samantha.

Yes, but you can't download the HQ versions of those voices so I'd
rather stay away from those.

hi listers,

Someone did a podcast a while back on the OBI100 adapter for google voice, and
I’m wondering if anyone remembers where the podcast is located. I already use
google voice on my iPhone, but I want to use the phone adapter when I’m at
home. If it’s more appropriate to answer off list, please do so.

Re: Answering a call on a iPhone 5

2013-01-23 Thread Georgina Joyce

But if it is locked I'm
done for.

David: Here in the UK, on O2, the power button doesn't do anything. As I

didn't realise what I was doing. Habit is useful at times but not at others.

Re: Looktel money reader results on the iPhone 5:

2013-01-23 Thread Chris Chaffin

I have an IPhone 5, and even though I have not tried IBill, or any other
money reader, I find Looktel Money Reader very quick and accurate.
From your message, Looktel money reader works on my IPhone 5 like it did on

your IPhone 4.

I have not had any problems reading any bills at all.
Whether folded, not folded, it really does not matter, money reader has
always did a quick and accurate job for me.

But I will say that I do scan most of it folded in half left to right.
This just allows me to flip through my bills quickly and letting money
reader tell me what they are.

If I am at home, or have a flat surface available, I just sit my phone on
the flat surface with the camera end hanging off just a little.
Then I take my bills and put the stack close to the flat surface under the
camera of the phone.
Then I just quickly flip through my bills letting money reader identify each
one as I flip.

As soon as I flip to the next bill, money reader tells me what it is.
I am not sure why you are having problems with money reader, but I am very
happy with money reader and its accurancy on my IPhone 5.

Re: Not As It Seems To Be - Was: Iphone 5 satisfaction ?

2013-01-23 Thread David Chittenden
Actually, it was the lack of a screen reader for Mac after Berkeley Systems
went out of business. Until Apple released the 3GS with VO, it was wellknown
that touch screens required some sort of local tactile response. No
professionals looked at the potential around touch with just audible response.
I now have a large number of the published studies.

Re: Money Reader Apps Besides Looktel Money Reader

2013-01-23 Thread Esther
Hi Elleen,

Here's the URL for free EyeNote app that Kim mentioned:
•EyeNote by Bureau of Engraving and Printing (free):
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/eyenote/id405336354?mt=8
I haven't tried this for some time since I use LookTel as a money
reader. This app uses the camera to take a picture instead of using
the video mode used by LookTel Money Reader, but perhaps this would be
a good alternative for your sighted colleague.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Deleting songs from your iTunes Library while viewing a playlist

2013-01-23 Thread Grant Hardy
I'm trying to tame my iTunes Library so that I'll have an easier time
managing it on my iPhone. Is there a way to delete songs from your
library directly from a playlist, or do you have to open them in
"Music" before you can do that? If the former, I could easily make a
smart playlist containing tracks that I wish to delete. Thanks.

Thanks for the great instructions. Now I have a follow-up question. Is there a
simple way to empty the trash folderather? Because, holy cow, there's a lot of
junk in there. It would take me forever to delete all that trash one message at
a time.

RE: encrypted Backup, was Re: iCloud.com

2013-01-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Arnold,

When your iPhone is connected to iTunes, go to your phone under Devices,
then tab until you get to Encripted Backup, it's a checkbox and, if I
remember correctly, it's towards the end, after you tab past where you can
select to backup to iCloud, enable syncing via WiFi etc. If you check this
once and then tell it to backup it will do the encrypted backup and the
checkbox will stay checked until you uncheck it.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Iphone 5 satisfaction ?

2013-01-23 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
I agree with the favorable views regarding iDevices. I am less sanguine,
however, about itunes and the apparent lack of good documentation for blind
users of iTunes as provided by Apple. And, because, iTunes functionality is
critical for good iDevice utility, I am surprised by their deficiency in this
regard, and apparent lack of interest in making such a resource available.

Unless, of course, there is some amazing iTunes Users Manual that is fully
accessible that I do not yet know about. Glad to be directed to any resource
that may be helpful. The free iPhone Users Guide, available through iBooks,
would be a good paradigm for them to follow with respect to iTunes.

I am so appreciative of all the helpful suggestions regarding iTunes that I
have learned through this list, but I am still a novice user of iTunes and
don't feel I have a real good understanding of it.

Many people are against Apple in principle now that it has become such a large
and successful company. I, on the other hand, have become an Apple fan boy
because Apple has done more for accessibility than any other computer company
in history. Thanks to Apple, I can use any iPhone and any Mac, straight out of
the box. Even their Apple TV is fully accessible.

VO is the same in any iOS device. IPhone 5 has a faster processor, twice as
much operating RAM, and a larger display which permits more apps per page, and
more apps per folder. Also, GPS antenna is significantly better, in my
experience. Contrary to some reports, iPhone 5 is significantly better than
iPhone 4S.

What about developement of the new navigation app for iphone from sendero.

2013-01-23 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

In the summer it was announced, that there should be a new release of a
navigation app specially develloped for the blind. Do anybody know if there
will be released a special navigation app, or sendero has given up the
development of such an app.

Best regards Annie.

I'm not sure if you were replying to me or not, but I was referring to
the setting Alan talked about where it sounds like you can set how
frequently to empty the trash, and I don't see that option on my iPhone

 Hi kim,

Back out to the main email screen. On this screen, there are two
headings: Inboxes and Accounts. Find your account name below the
Accounts heading, and double-tap. All the folders in that account,
including Trash, are listed on your screen.

encrypted Backup, was Re: iCloud.com

2013-01-23 Thread Arnold Schmidt

So, how do I do an encrypted backup? ITunes automatically backs up my phone
when I connect it to my computer via the connecting cable, I assume this one
is not encrypted, being that it has never asked for a password. Thanks for
any information.

In my view, the best way to back up is by making an encrypted backup to
iTunes. This will back up data that iCloud and unencrypted backups do not,
because it backs up the key chain of your device.

Secure information such as passwords will be restored to your phone if you
back up this way, but they won't with other methods.

Hi Shane,

The iCloud.com website is not very accessible no matter what
screenreader
you use and this even applies to using it with Safari on a Mac with
Voiceover.

However, if you use Jaws and know how to use the Jaws cursor well you
can do
some stuff. I find there really isn't much I need to do on there, the
most
useful function if you don't have another iDevice would be to activate
the
Find My iPhone feature and cause your iPhone to emit a sound and this is
possible with Jaws, but as I said, it's not the easiest thing to do.
Jaws
will read buttons like log in or sign in whatever it says, but it
doesn't
necessarily activate them with enter or space. Instead try and route the
Jaws to PC and then do a left mouse click.

Okay, go to settings, then the fourth item down should say location services
on, then double tap to activate, then find the on button on the top, and you
can double tap to turn it off.
So the options you will have our, airplane mode, Wi-Fi, notifications, then
location services.

I have an iPhone 4S and its camera is almost identical to the one on the

Are you using a case? If so, maybe take the phone out of the case and try it

I was also amazed that it took no effort at all almost as if it couldn't

Now with my iPhone 5 and its improved camera I find money reader much more

It seems to have a lot of trouble reading even brand new bills now and

Using Different Apps to Access Objects

2013-01-23 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello List,

I thought I would report on an out-of-the-box use for obtaining object
identification. I don't know if this will work with all objects, but it is
worth a try. I want to begin to build up my list of items in Looktel
Recognizer, but I don't have sighted assistance currently. I have several
T-shirts that have different motifs or writing on them. I decided to try the
combination of using the TapTapSee app and then use Looktel Recognizer to
take the picture again and record the item. I am happy to say that it worked
and I tested it by running the camera over the shirt while Recognizer was
open. Now, I can add this method to my bag of tricks when I want to identify
an object, and then record it in Recognizer. Before trying this, I would use
VizWiz (web worker) to have a pair of eyes to inform me what the item was.
This by no means will replace VizWiz when TapTapSee will not capture the
image correctly. I thought I would just report on a new use for the 2 apps
working together.

Hi Don,

I am running an iPhone4, but Jen on this list tipped me off in using
"TapTapSee" app to recognize paper money. The app is free and within 3-5
seconds it gave me the result. I repeated it with 3 different denominations
to make sure that I was getting an accurate result all the time. The app is
free. You should install it and try it out. You will be pleasantly surprise.

Re: Iphone 5 satisfaction ?

2013-01-23 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't care to enter into this debate, but I will correct one point,
you can get Android 4.1 phones with screen access built in. There's no
need to download anything. You just enable the screen reader in a manner
very similar to how you turn on VO on an iPhone. I'll let others discuss
whether Talk Back stacks up to VoiceOver or not and whether Android
phones measure up to the iPhone. For my part, each person needs to
determine what phone and what screen reader meets there needs.

Changing Volume with buttons

2013-01-23 Thread Alan Paganelli
I had this problem over and over again. Sometimes due to my fault and other
times no clue how it happened. Then I discovered a better way. In settings,
sounds, change with buttons. This is a toggle. When it's on,you change the
volume with the up/down buttons on the side of your iPhone. When it's off, you
set the volume in this screen. I ran it all the way up to 100%. Now the
up/down buttons work as they should or like most people expect them to. In
other words, they are the master volume buttons. No more accidentally changing
the line clicks or other unknown things. Sense I made this change, no more
unknown volume changes in the past year. Your phone, your choice but I thought
you all might like to know that you don't have to put up with these unknown
volume changes by having change with buttons turned on.

No it doesn't mean you can't raise or lower the volume on a phone call or
reading a book. All those individual volume changes you make with the up/down
buttons you set when you set the volume in change with buttons off. So you
already know what all volume levels are now set to and all the up/down buttons
do now is become the master volume control.

Thank you ever so much Bret! As always, someone came to the rescue. Thought
I had done what you suggested, but apparently the gesture did not work so
up/down buttons didn' work at which point I panicked! This time I really swiped
up. Sure enough with the bigger gesture, I was able to check up/down buttons!
Yayay! It is all better! Thanks ever so much. Hope everyone else doesn't chime

  Hi,
The first thing I would try when the phone is unlocked, is to do a two finger
swipe up to force voice-over to rebidding tires screen. As soon as you have
done this repeatedly pressed the app for you button to make sure that
voice-over volume is not turned totally down.

Re: Iphone 5 satisfaction ?

2013-01-23 Thread Alan Paganelli
Very well said. If your visually impaired, Apple has you covered. I like
to think of it as a portable hole. Drag it around the screen anywhere you
like. What ever appears inside that hole is magnified and you can choose
the degree of magnification. If your hearing impaired, Apple has you
covered. TTY is fully supported. You can also chose to have the left/right
stereo mixed into mono and there is an audio EQ to better boost or cut
various ranges to better help you hear. If your blind, Apple has you
covered. They have support for Braille displays and if you don't have a
Braille display, there is Voice-Over which reads the screen to you. Apple
has said that building accessibility into each unit and spreading that cost
over all units comes out to about $.32 per unit.

That having been said, go over to see any other cell phone maker and see
what they offer straight out of the box and you'll find the answer is not
much at all and what they do offer is no match for Apple products. Some
might offer a free screen reader but you've got to download it because it's
an add-on. Now if your it really gets tough. I'll stick with iPhone.
Hopefully this weekend we'll get our iPhone 5s My wife is an RN and works
long hours. We gave each other new iPhone 5's for Christmas or I should say
the money. We just haven't got back to the Apple store. We did get in
there once but the place was packed to the roof it seemed so we just left.
I guess allot of folks got money for Christmas and it was burning a hole in
their pockets! Whatta great spot to be in heh!

Many people are against Apple in principle now that it has become such a
large and successful company. I, on the other hand, have become an Apple fan
boy because Apple has done more for accessibility than any other computer
company in history. Thanks to Apple, I can use any iPhone and any Mac,
straight out of the box. Even their Apple TV is fully accessible.

VO is the same in any iOS device. IPhone 5 has a faster processor, twice as
much operating RAM, and a larger display which permits more apps per page,
and more apps per folder. Also, GPS antenna is significantly better, in my
experience. Contrary to some reports, iPhone 5 is significantly better than
iPhone 4S.

is there an app taht will read CD covers?

2013-01-23 Thread meadowlark77
Hello. Is there an app for the iPhone 5 that will read CD covers, too? I'm
talking about the kind of CD covers that we might make for homemade
compilations of disks and they'd ony be in text or rtf or .doc formats?

Note: I don't know which address my subscription is under right now,
because when I posted I did not receive a copy of messages. Are we suppose
to receive a copy back?

Take care and thanks,

Hi kim,

Back out to the main email screen. On this screen, there are two headings:
Inboxes and Accounts. Find your account name below the Accounts heading,
and double-tap. All the folders in that account, including Trash, are
listed on your screen.

Re: Lost VoiceOver After Reset

2013-01-23 Thread Nimit Kaur
Helllo Tom,

You might need a sighted person with you if you're blind. Well, tell
that person to go to settings, than general and then accessibility and
than voiceover on. Since you can't hear vo talking you might need a
sighted person to set it up again. And yes, I would have personally
turned off my device and turn it on again instead of resetting first.
Thanks and hope it clears your anxiousness.

Re: any more voices for the i phone?

2013-01-23 Thread BBS
Besides, why would you want Eloquence anyway? Eloquence is the most
annoying robotic sounding voice ever. I'd rather listen to a human read
my stuff out to me than a robot. I don't think Apple should get rid of
voices, I think that they should allow people to install whatever voice
they want like on Android. For example, I would love to have the
Cereproc voices on my Mac on my iPhone. I think in my opinion that
they're the most natural sounding voices out there. I'm using Cereproc
Sarah right now writing this message and love that she takes breaths
once in a while. These voices are also available for PC and Android. If
anyone wants the link to listen to some of these voices, email me off list.

I would suggest updating to iOS 6. The Item chooser is good in iOS 5, but it's

Hi, I actually read your reply a few days ago… Thank you.

My ear piece is Plantronics explorer 210. From what I can google, it supports
a2dp, but voiceover is not coming through it.

I even had iPhone forget the device, then repaired.

Is there anything I could be missing here?

I've tried to google for firmware updates, but I wasn't successful in finding
anything.

Any further support is appreciated.

I like the ear bud on this bluetooth. It isn't usual and round. I'm not sure
how to describe it. :)

Re: Not As It Seems To Be - Was: Iphone 5 satisfaction ?

2013-01-23 Thread Penny Reeder
I think it is more than just an implication that Microsoft has been
and continues to be insensitive -- in fact, outright hostile -- to our
needs as a community of people who want the same quality of life that
everyone who depends on good vision simply takes for granted. Just
look at their release of the Windows VII phone last year. They simply
said, unapologetically, that it would not be accessible when it was
released. And, this has certainly not been the first or the only
Microsoft product that ignored our collective need for accessibility.

I believe that it was the threat of litigation concerning the
inaccessibility of early IPODs that prompted Apple to see the
proverbial light, and maybe that is, in some small measure, a mark
against them, but their out-of-the-box accessibility and the
passionate approval it has engendered among people who are blind
should provide a wake-up call to everyone who produces technology and
creates web sites. People who are blind have just as much right to
access as everyone else, and it can happen if corporations and
manufacturers decide to do it.

RE: Lost VoiceOver After Reset

2013-01-23 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Tom,

I have had the very same problem. If you are using ITunes, plug in your
phone, go to your settings, make sure summary is checked and tab to options.
Go to "Configure universal access" and hit enter. Check the voice over box
and your voice over will turn on.

I don't know if this is an IOS 6 problem but I did have that problem only
under IOS 6

Subject: Lost VoiceOver After Reset

Hi,

After reading a recent post to the list last night I was trying to play the
Escape The House game on my iPhone 4 running IOS 6.01 and I kept getting
kicked out of the app. This continued even after clearing the app switcher,
so, says I, time for a reset, which I did by holding down the sleep/wake
button and home key at the same time for a few seconds. When the phone came
back up, VoiceOver was not running and wouldn't start even after
triple-clicking the home key. I have some questions.

First, is this VoiceOver loss situation common among all models of the
iPhone running IOS 6.01, or is it relatively rare and hard to reproduce?

Second, if it's fairly common, is Apple planning to do something about it?

Third, instead of doing the reset that I just described, would simply
powering down the phone and restarting it have been a better idea?

Lastly, I'd really like to check out the Escape the House game and wonder if
I should uninstall and reinstall it to resolve the issue of being
unceremoniously dumped out of the app when trying to get past the first
screen.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

2013-01-23 Thread Bill Gallik
Please pardon me for this somewhat off topic message, but I do feel
obligated to clear the air just a wee bit on a subtle matter that has come

Now first, let me say that I also am extremely pleased with my iPhone 5 and
the embedded accessibility. And likewise; major, major KUDOS to Apple for
having the (dare I say) foresight to design that accessibility right into
their products. Certainly, Apple is to be commended for the effort to
provide devices that customers can use right out of the box without
incurring additional, prohibitive expense.

But I have to point out that Microsoft at one point had mulled around the
idea of providing at least an embedded screen reader in the Windows OS; I'm
sure there are more than a few others on this list that will remember this.
The company had approached both NFB and ACB with feelers to get an idea how
that would be received by the blind and visually impaired community. The
result of that inquiry caused Microsoft to drop the idea. I must confess my
guilt here as I replied with a resounding "NO" to this idea -- I regret to
say now. Why I (and many others I presume) replied that way is not germane
to this list, but I think we should be careful not to imply that Microsoft
has been insensitive to our circumstances. Just for the record.

Push the home button once. Nothing will happen, but the message will be
gone. You probably double tapped and held inadvertently! Done that myself,
but it will be OK if you don't tap the screen. If this does not work, turn
off your phone with on/off and reboot. It will all be well again.

What have I, inadvertently, done that now Iphone5 keeps saying "double-tap

RE: Lost VoiceOver After Reset

2013-01-23 Thread Regina Alvarado
Tom:

David and some others have more experience trying to reproduce this. For me
it was once burned, you know the saying! I never have done the reset with
home and on/off again. I just turn my phone off and reboot, and it seems to
work. Don't think Apple has any thoughts of fixing as accessibility wrote
back to me when I asked them about this and told me it was my fault for
using this shutdown. You can always turn on VO from iTunes, but I still
have not figured out how. iTunes does not seem to see my phone, though I am
getting better at working with iTunes. Maybe someone else can tell us what
to look for in iTunes to turn VO back on. Of course, once it is back on you
are good to go!

Tom

Hi Bill,

I just checked this out and it came up for me right away. Here is how I do
this (I used iTunes on my PC):

I opened iTunes and pressed Control+Shift+F which puts the cursor into the
search box.
I type in "Sleepless in Seattle" and press "Control+Enter" which searches
the iTunes Store rather than just "Enter" to search your library.
After the page loads I make sure I am at the top with Control+Home.
When I review what I have, I get the following (please note I typed out
"heading level 3" to indicate that you can use the quick navigation key "h"
to jump to the headings or I put "link" in front of what is a link you can
click on):

iTunes store

Showing results for sleepless in seattle.

Heading Level 3 Movies

Link Description: Sleepless In Seattle

Link Sleepless In Seattle

Heading Level 3 Songs

Link See All

It then shows a bunch of songs from the Sleepless in Seattle sound track,
after that come more heading level 3 sections like Albums, iPad apps,
Podcasts, Podcast episodes etc.

If I click on the link under the movies heading that says Sleepless in
Seattle I find a "$19.99 Buy HD Button".
A bit further down are 2 radio buttons, "HD" and "SD". HD is checked by
default, if you check "SD", the buy option changes to $9.99 for the standard
definition version.
This is followed by a few more heading level 3 sections like Plot Summary,
Trailers, Cast and Crew etc. as well as the information about download size,
the HD version is a 3.82 Gb download.

Good luck,
Sieghard

Re: contacts, ring tones, favorites and voice mail

2013-01-23 Thread Marcy Weinberg
Yes, a two fingered double tap will place you in the other call. You can then
swap the calls with the swap button, or merge the calls with the merge button
and have a three-way call. If you end the second call with the end button, you
will be placed back in the first call, but you may have to look for the hold
button and double tap it as it will be selected.

That being said, I also have noticed some other things happen when people
thought their phones lost voiceover. This is in no way to claim that it doesn't
happen at all.

  1. I've seen people tap from a locked screen three times; by this I mean that
even the ""slide to unlock" wasn't up when they started though of course you
don't know that by sound when voiceover hasn't been turned on yet.
  2. I've seen people think vo hadn't come back on when actually the phone
hadn't come back on at all. Actually, I've done that one myself so now i'm more
cautious.

Again, this is not to say that the "no voiceover after reset" bug doesn't

mistaken for losing voiceover.

Checkmark Update

2013-01-23 Thread Eric
Based on response to questions here, I may be the only person using this app.
It is an excellent replacement for the native Reminders app, however. There are
some Siri and synchronizing issues, but it is much easier to Enter and review
reminders in this application. Unfortunately, it is now back at the regular
five dollars price.

However, my issue had been inability to delete entries, whether newly added or
expired. I spoke with the developers yesterday and they told me how to delete
an entry. It is reverse the normal process of double tap, hold, swipe to the
right. In this app you swipe to the left. They say that swiping right invokes
the snooze feature, but I am not sure that Actually works with voice over.

Other then the few minor issues, this is most excellent in my opinion because
it puts reminders in chronological order, not the order you interred them. I
have not found anyone who knows if you can rearrange Reminders in the native
Reminders app so that they appear in chronological order and not the order you
entered them. I think this is another huge swing and miss by Apple.

If anyone has questions, please ask and we will learn together.

Mailto:sseri...@gmail.com

The app is Checkmark, one word. I am sorry I have not been able to figure out
how to link directly to the App Store.

Truthfully I suggest just getting outside and walking around your
neighborhood with the app running. It will do the work for you.

It will start telling you whats nearby.

After a while you can cutsomize it by letting it know things your not
interested in hearing about just buy turning the category on or off,
simple

toggles.

The other setting you need to play with after a bit is the distance
setting.
This says ow many feet you want to look ahead. Shortening the distance
it
looks ahead can help sometimes when you just want to know what is close
to

you.

Another setting is the way it tells you information about direction.

You can decide if you want the area described as a clock face, or compass
directions or where things are in degrees.

Don't worry abou tthis just run it and after a bit you will decide how
you

want things set.

Re: Copying or Syncing Data to a Second Computer

2013-01-23 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

yes. I think you might slightly missunderstand. IOS devices don't play nice
when being synced to iTunes libraries which they weren't previously associated
with. Generally, this is the first iTunes library you ever synced your device
with.

More over, only certain types of information can be transferred from your IOS
device to your computer. For example, purchases made in iTunes. Apps, iBooks,
and I think music and movie/TV purchases but, I'm not 100% of those. The key
here is, there items purchased from Apple. Things like Calendar and e-mail
account information can also be synced from your device to your computer, as
well as videos and photos.

Re: Answering a call on a iPhone 5

2013-01-23 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but I'll offer this suggestion
anyway. My phone is in an Otterbox Defender case, which makes things a bit
easier perhaps. Anyway, when a call comes in, I immediately put my right
index finger at or very near the lower righthand corner of the screen,
where I'll typically hear VoiceOver say "slide to answer". I hold my index
finger there and do a split-tap. If you're unfamiliar with the split-tap,
you locate the item in question, hold your finger there and tap elsewhere,
anywhere on the screen. This works better than 90 percent of the time for
me. The double-tap, especially when I'm walking around or doing something
else when the call comes in, seems to offer me much better control. Hope
this helps.

Hi Gena,

I would suggest you ask somebody to call you. Use the earpods that came
with

your iPhone and press the middle button (the slightly resessed area) to
answer the call and see if that works. If you can talk to the person and
the

call does not hang up you at least know your phone works fine.

If you have a landline you can call yourself or, if not, maybe you can ask
a

friend to call you and then practice answering without the earpods.

You can answer either by doing a 2-finger double tap anywhere on the
screen
when your phone is ringing or you can put your finger on the home key,
then
slide it up a bit until you find the "answer" button and double tap with
one

finger. It's all just practice.

Sieghard

Re: Installing an app on an iDevice

2013-01-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, it sounds like there is some frustration here. However please try to
word your messages a bit more eloquently in the future. You will
probably find more people willing to help. Cussing, whether the words
are veiled or not doesn't make you come off as an intelligent person.

Hi all,

Before I lose the rest of my f'n mind with this thing, how the hell does

device with itunes on my computer? What does one have to do to complete
a task as simple as installing an F'n app?

Re: any more voices for the i phone?

2013-01-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Never I hope. I wish they would get rid of Samantha too. .
However no one is ever going to fully agree on the ideal voice. Some are
still in love with eloquence while some are in love with Samantha. Then
there are people like me who will use what is available because
grumbling about it won't make a difference in what Apple goes with.
Since I have no better suggestion on what should be added or removed,
I'll just stick with snotty Samantha.

Yes, but you can't download the HQ versions of those voices so I'd
rather stay away from those.

Re: viphone FAQ project

2013-01-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi all, I forgot to add one thing to my below message about the viphone
FAQ project. In addition to the FAQ entry which you submit to me
directly, please also include the answer to the question. I don't want
to have to go through questions and write up the answers myself since
some of you might know the answer better than me.

Hi all. I hope you are doing well. I've gotten a bit behind on reading
messages on viphone and so if there are any immediate moderation which
needs to be done, I'll get to it within the next couple of days. The
reason I'm writing is because I'm starting to put together a FAQ list of
some of the most commonly asked questions from new users, or from users
who don't need the information on day 1, but whose situation changes on
day 100 and then they find that they need it. Perhaps this will make
things easier for those who have a hard time using the list archives.
This FAQ will of course answer such questions like the following:

1. How do I answer a call?

2. How do I make a folder?

3. Where can I find audio podcasts of neat things to do?

4. How can I set my subscription to digest or go nomail?

5. How can I search the list archives?

Plus many more. So, here is what I'm proposing. Rather than me putting
together a list of frequently asked questions and answers myself,
choosing what I think is a commonly asked question, I would like to ask
you guys for this information. Don't hit your reply button just yet
though. It is vitally important that you send me this information off
list. I repeat, send me your FAQ suggestions off list, meaning not on
the viphone list. Please include the words viphone faq in the subject
line so I know what it is about and so my GMail filter will give the
message the appropriate label. Feel free to include as many FAQ entries
as you want. Remember they should be specifically about using iOS or
about using this list. I will go over all the suggested FAQ entries over
the next couple of weeks and compile them on a page for all to browse.
We can then all share the web site of viphone FAQ entries. I realize
that this project might or might not help, but I'm giving this a try in
case it will help things. Also, if you are interested in helping to
maintain the FAQ list, which of course will need updating from time to
time, let me know in your direct message to me.

I hate saying the following, but I must since I don't want a long-winded
discussion of what is or isn't a good FAQ entry on list to take place.
Any messages about the viphone FAQ suggestions which are sent here to
the list instead of to me will result in your address being put on
moderated status. So, as long as you send me your suggestion privately,
I can do this a lot more efficiently. Also, please indicate to me if you
want your name associated with your suggestion. If you don't
specifically give me permission, I won't mention you just to be safe.

If you have any questions about this, please let me know in private
email as well.

Thanks all.
