audio within apps, the cloud, and updating time overseas
Hi all, I just had a few more questions relating to overseas travel. A friend of mine suggested just taking my iphone 4 and leaving the 5 behind and just downloading the apps I would use while overseas. I must confess I had forgotten about the fact that the you can have your account on multiple devices at the same time. Lol silly me. Anyway, I was just wondering, If I have apps that download audio content, such as audible and downcast, Are the audio files synced when I automatically update to ICloud and if so, could I turn on my iphone 4 and download these apps and will my books and podcasts previously downloaded be automatically redownloaded, or will I have to redownload them onto the 4? Also, I have my clock set to automatically update time, so I'm assuming when I turn on my phone in England, the local time is automatically updated and I can view it on the phone? Thanks heaps for any info you can give me, Hope you all have a great day, Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Even though notifications are turned on in twitterific I am not getting them. I don't see twitterific as an option under setting/notification. Hi maria, I did an Audioboo on this subject a little under a year ago. Since then, Twitterific has changed for the better. It's less verbose and more accessible than ever. It's hard to go wrong with either Twitterific or Tweetlist. I make extensive use of Twitter lists to manage my Twitter traffic, so I tend to keep coming back to Tweetlist and there's nothing else that handles lists as well. I know many people on this list use different apps to access Twitter. I also know each client has its positives and negatives and each of us prefer something else. Would anyone be willing to compare the features of the following Twitter clients? 1. Native Twitter that comes with IOS, 2. Tweetlist, 3. Twitterrific, 4. Tweetbot. Which of these clients that have been mentioned support Push notifications and in what way? As far as I know Native Twitter gives push notifications when someone post a tweet while other Twitter clients give push notifications only for direct messages and mentions. Does any client have the function that is called individual time line in The Qube? To explain it better, The qube has the option here you can view the user's timeline (their tweets and replies). Another thing is which client lets you read the tweets from the position where you left? Does any client have the function to clear your time line like you can in The Qube? I know sighted people can do that with Twitterrific, but this function is not accessible with Voiceover. I would be happy to see a twitter client with all mentioned features plus more. Please describe the features that each Twitter client has. I would be grateful for any kind of help. Thank you very much in advance. Have a great weekend. Re: audio within apps, the cloud, and updating time overseas
Hi Andrew, what happens time-wise when you turn your phone on depends on the network you are using. Many networks have a service that sets the time for you when you connect, but not all. So you may or may not find the time is set right. If you don't have a local sim in your phone, which would allow you to use your phone a lot more effectively, then you can manually select a network to rome on and hopefully find one that pushes the time for you. Re: BeMyEyes: A ground braking product I'm a part of
Hi Jonathan. Thank you very much. A few weeks ago, I did something pretty amazing using Facetime: I was able to set up my tv and search for new channels. I held my iphone in one hand and my remote in the other, and the sighted person guided me and read the menus out loud to me. that took a lot of practice, because it's difficult to point at the right spot on the big tv screen, but I got so surprised to see that it was even possible to do all that. It took a while, but if someone is whilling to help and have the pasions, it's really worth it. Sometimes, using Vizwiz is time consuming, because you might take a picture of the wrong side of a packet, carton or whatever, or perhaps you just didn't do a good job of taking the first picture. You have to wait for the first response from a web worker, assuming you get one at all, then submit another picture. TapTapSee is good, but presently you have no means of asking a question to accompany your picture, and you can't specify that you want your picture looked at by a human when the object recognition engine doesn't give you what you want. Having some anonymous means of establishing a video link with a sighted person is a great idea. Yes, those of us with family can ask them via Skype or FaceTime, but there are those who don't have family to rely on, there are times when family aren't available, and there are just times when you don't feel like imposing on someone you know. I wish you the best of luck with this. Vizwiz can't do that, this app is only in english, no video calls which means nobody to guide you to get the best picture. Facetime is great, but there you are limited to Apples products, and you have to call someone you already know. Skype, well, I'm having issues on navigating the call screen, and switch to the back camera. Nice if Vizwiz works for you, but it don't works for all people, because people only speak english there, and if the picture isn't good enough, well, you have to try again. This is just my humble opinion, but if you skype or facetime a person just to get the answer to a question like what can is this or the expiary date etc, using vizwiz or even a scanning app such as text detective seems much quicker and more efficient, and if you were to call a stranger ask your question and have them answer you probably in less than a minute, seems a bit pointless use of data and time consumption when there are already other apps out there. I agree when you have sighted family and friends as well as other apps I've mentioned and others, I personally feel there isn't a need for this one. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of John Diakogeorgiou Sent: Tuesday, 30 April 2013 12:35 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: BeMyEyes: A ground braking product I'm a part of Hi: Hi: Their are people who don't have access to family or friends that can help them sometimes. RE: audio within apps, the cloud, and updating time overseas
Hi Andrew and Jonathan, Actually, Jonathan, I believe if you have Setting Time Zone set to on in Settings, Privacy, Location Services, System Services, then your iPhone's time will be set according to the time zone you are in whether you have local service or not. I am pretty sure of that because when I went to Thailand recently I first flew from Vancouver to Beijing, China. As soon as I arrived and turned off Airplane Mode, the time set itself even though I still had my Canadian SIM in the phone and it said No Service. When I then flew to Bangkok the next day once again the time set itself correctly when I arrived in Bangkok even before I bought and put in the Thai SIM card. I usually turn all the system services off because I found that in iOS 5 having especially the Setting Time Zone set to on, really seemed to use up a lot of battery. Even now when I am looking at it, it says Requested your location within the last 24 hours. I think if this is set to On it constantly checks your location, probably using the GPS. Many networks have a service that sets the time for you when you connect, but not all. So you may or may not find the time is set right. If you don't have a local sim in your phone, which would allow you to use your phone a lot more effectively, then you can manually select a network to rome on and hopefully find one that pushes the time for you. A work around for multi-page scans using Text Grabber.
Hi, Now that we can be reasonably sure of readable scans when using Text Grabber together with the StandScan Pro, I'd like to share something I discovered that might make things a little easier when scanning more than a single sheet of text. for example, a hand-out at college, or several pages of a long letter. I don't think I would suggest this for double page scans from books though, as these are still problematic owing to the nature of bound books. I hadn't noticed before that all the shots taken are automatically stored in the History tab of the app. Now, i have the task of scanning, approximately, 50 documents, all related and all in chronological order. I have been putting it off because I thought it would be just so exhausting saving each one into notes etc. However, using the history tab, I now find I can access all my scans there. So, I have emptied the history (unfortunately, I had to do this one by one, something to be improved in a future update perhaps?) Then I started to scan my documents. I decided to start from the back so that when I come to look in History, the top will be the first, but this is not necessary... I took a chance, as all these were well printed, single page letters, and just took the shot, let it be recognised, didn't even read the results, but went back into camera and took the next one, placing it on top of the one already there. So far, I have 20 scans, all readable and easy to access in my history tab. I must play a little more with this feature, but for now, it seems like an easy way to get multi-page scans in a readable form without too much fussing. I would love to see some more options in the management of the history tab, although, it might be that I have not yet found all the capabilities of this app. Has anyone else explored this? Sandy. Positioning stickers with my StandScan Pro.
Hi, Harry sent me a new StandScan Pro, as I had problems with the connection to the lights with my old, one of the first, StandScans. Included were 2 L-shaped restickable stickers. I have placed one of these at the top left corner of the phone when in position and it makes it really easy to abut the phone against it as the sticker is thick, approx, 1/4 (a quarter) of an inch thick. If I wanted, I could use the other for the bottom right corner and, in that way, I could just drop the phone into position, but because I often keep my phone in its case when scanning and this particular case has a flap, attached from the bottom of the phone, which flips up to cover the front of the phone when not in use, I have decided to just use the top corner sticker. The thing that is nice about these stickers is that they can be repositioned, so if you make a mistake in placing them, there is no problem changing their position. These stickers make all the difference re ease of use. Well done the StandScan Pro team! And thank you for sticking with us! Happy scanning, Sandy. RE: going to first/last element of screen with bt keyboard and vo Re: Blue Tooth Keyboard Commands
Anouk, I think reading this list in a language other than English would be difficult for me; wow! I will try and explain this further; please don't feel insulted if the description below seems to simple. Ii want to help. Remember that the colums on the list are in this order: 1. Action 2. QuickNav on 3. QuickNav off 4. Equivalent Gesture Let's use your example of move to First Element. Column 1 is Action: move to first element Column 2 says, QuickNav on: control plus up arrow. This means that for this to work you must have QuickNav on; remember that QuickNav toggles on and off by typing left and right arrows together. Column 3 says, quickNav off, NA. This means that when Quicknav is turned off this action is not applicable; in other words, it won't work. Column 4 says, finger tap near top of screen and as you said, that works as well. So remember that the command just below the Action itself is with QuickNav on and one below it is with QuickNav off. Anouk, if this is still unclear let me know. Is there a way we can talk from country to country on iPhones? If so, and doing it together over the phone would help, I'd be glad to try. Re: I don't think Verizon likes blind square.
Hi Eddie, You won't need to re-purchase the app after you uninstall it. Here is the procedure for uninstalling the app in question. 1. Locate the app. 2. Perform a single finger double tap and hold gesture until you hear an ascending tone. Then lift your finger. 3. You will hear VO say something about moving apps, but ignore that message. Now locate the app again. VO should indicate that a double tap will delete the app which is what you want. 4. Perform a single finger double tap and you will get a confirmation message asking if you want to delete the app. Choose the OK button and the app is deleted from your device. 5. Now go ahead and re-download the app and install it, you will not be charged as long as you use the same Apple ID you used when initial purchase was done. I have found that like with a computer, sometimes, removing and re-installing an app will result in improved performance. Generally, this is not necessary, but sometimes, it can make a positive difference in performance. HTH. Hi Bill and list. Chiming in on this discussion, as others have already stated yes you can have more than one email account configured on your favourite i-device. I have several accounts configured on my iPhone 4S. And, when you open the native mail client you can pick which account you would like to view so the emails from each account are separated, they are not all lumped together such as they are if you configure multiple email accounts in a program like ms outlook express on windows. However, as the native mail app on the i-devices configures itself so that the password for each account is saved by default under settings/mail contacts and calendars another concern which may be important to bring up in the context of this conversation is that of security or the lack thereof, I.E., user 1 could quite easily view the email, contacts, and calendar belonging to user 2. Of course, depending upon the relationship of the two users in question under this setup security may not be a concern, however; as we don't know such finite details I figured I'd toss this issue out for discussion. RE: audio within apps, the cloud, and updating time overseas
Hi Sieghard, That's awesome! Thanks *smile* -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Saturday, 4 May 2013 7:30 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: audio within apps, the cloud, and updating time overseas Hi Andrew and Jonathan, Actually, Jonathan, I believe if you have Setting Time Zone set to on in Settings, Privacy, Location Services, System Services, then your iPhone's time will be set according to the time zone you are in whether you have local service or not. Hello fellow glisters. I am ready for a phone up grade and I am thinking about staying with the iPhone. Or going with one of the galaxy phone either the 3 or 4. So if I would stay with the iPhone I would need to purchase a new case. I was thinking about the life prof case. The otter box defender case is a bit to bulky. I would like to get a good case that will protect the phone the most I can. and that would hamper the sound of the phone. RE: deleting music off IPhone
Hi Andrew, You can delete songs, albums or artists directly on the phone. If you open Music and, for example, select artists at the bottom. Then let's say you have Air Supply listet as an artist and want to delete it. Just swipe until you are on Air Supply, now do a single finger swipe up or down. Voiceover will say Delete and then you just double tap anywhere. This is a new iOS 6 feature and it's called the Action Rotor setting. In certain apps like in Mail, Messages, in the Favorites part of the phone app etc. the rotor automatically switches to this setting and the single finger swipe up or down toggles between Default and Delete. It is on Default by default so to speak which means if you are on Air Supply and do a double tap it will open this Artist and display any albums or songs. But if you flick up or down to change from default to delete, then the double tap will delete. Now, if you connect to iTunes and want to erase all music, just make sure you go to your Device, check Music and then say you don't want to sync any music. Then do a sync and all music should be gone. Keep in mind that in iTunes it's not really like you can delete something, you have to uncheck it and then sync to your phone. It sounds as if you are quite new to the iPhone and I highly recommend you listen to Jonathan Mosen's 2-part series of Podcasts on the Freedom Scientific website. I don't know if you are a Windows or Mac user and, if you are a Windows user if you use Jaws 14 with iTunes 11, but Jonathan does a great job explaining on how to use iTunes with Jaws and even if you were using a different screenreader you would still get something out of this. You can find the Podcasts here: http://www.FreedomScientific.com/FSCast If you use a Podcast app like Downcast or iCatcher on your iPhone, you can also subscribe to the Podcast from that app. I think it was the January and February FS Casts, so there would be 2 newer ones since the April FS Cast was just released, then there is March and then February. January would be the first part of the series. RE: smart enough to switch?
Ray, If you want to be sure that the phone won't use cell data at any time while in Wi-Fi range, you may want to turn cell data off for the duration and turn it back on when you are ready to go out. This insures that you won't exceed your data limit assuming you have one. When the phone is locked, it may from time to time, switch to cellular. Some folks experience this more than others, of course. Your mileage may vary. DJ -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Ray T. RE: Can I have more than one e-mail account on an iDevice?
Hi Andrew, Yes, you can have as many as you want, well, I guess having 10 may not be practical and if you had them all set to Push it would use up a lot of battery. Anyhow, I have both my business email and my one personal Hotmail account set up, you can either see all emails in the All Inboxes folder or you can go to each account separately. You would set one of the accounts as your default account, typically it's whichever one you create first that is set as the default account by default. If you compose a message and want to send it from the other account, you can double tap on the From field, then a pop up control becomes visible where you can flick up or down and select whichever account you want. The iPhone has predefined account types such as Exchange, gmail, Yahoo, Windows Live Hotmail or you can choose other and then you can choose whether you want to set up the account as an IMAP or POP account. If you want your mail to be kept in sync between a computer and your iPhone or even have other devices, I highly recommend you use IMAp or, if you use a Hotmail or Outlook.com account, use the Windows Live Hotmail account which sets up the account using Exchange Active Sync. I just looked at your email address and I don't know what the Bigpont.net provider offers, but obviously you would need to have the correct information handy as far as IMAP settings are concerned or if they only support POP, you need incoming server, outgoing server, user name, password etc. I personally like Outlook.com a lot which used to be Hotmail/Windows Live because Microsoft has done a lot of upgrades to the service and it's top notch. RE: Purchased Kindle books do not appear in iTunes when looking at the device connected
Well, I'm not sure I can confirm the Amazon oddity. I can see all the books on my Wife's Kindle reader just by plugging it in to my computer and there they all are. I can copy them all to some place else as well. So I am beginning to believe that Apple just doesn't want to have you able to do this. Yet, the app is made by amazon. So who knows. My suspicion is that this might be one of the things Amazon had to do in order to please Apple, but that's just a hunch. The bottom line is that the iPhone app behaves very differently in this regard than does the kindle itself. Actually, free books showed up, but the book he had just purchased and the one I have did not show up at all. Other apps in the list had a populated tree view and thus you got a save button and could put the items where you wanted. However, the save button did not show up under the Kindle tree view if the books you had on the device were purchased. Just another little Apple oddity. I think there is a market for what you're proposing. My newist phone is the 4S, and favourite case so far, and had it on two different phones so far, is Otterbox's Impact series. a 1piece rubbery thing which is a good balance of protection without over-bulking the device. I have a stick'on screen protector anyway. The front of it does frame the working part of the screen very well, so this makes a good guide too. I can't check right now, since I only have the one account on my iPhone at the moment, but you should be able to back out to an Accounts page in the email client on the iPhone and then select the account who's mail you want to handle. RE: Can I have more than one e-mail account on an iDevice?
Hi, Having more than one account on an iPhone is no problem. I have 3 one Exchange account from work, and one Imap account and one Pop3 account. Yes, you can back out to an Accounts screen that allows you to choose which account you want to work with. You can either switch to another account's inbox or see all that account's folders. I can't check right now, since I only have the one account on my iPhone at the moment, but you should be able to back out to an Accounts page in the email client on the iPhone and then select the account who's mail you want to handle. Once you select the account, you should see a list of the mail boxes in that account, including the in box. Hi, I agree with him. The OtterBox defender series is a good case as well. Although, I have to admit, I couldn't get my case on my phone. It took two people to figure it out. But I love this case. If I go to manage my Kindle to the book I want to delete from the cloud, there is a pop up actions menu that neither JAWS or NVDA will open. Re: deleting music off IPhone
Hello, and just to add, if you want to delete all the music off your device, you can go to settings/general/usage. Now double tap on the music app. There is a list of applications shown in usage ordered with the ones that take up the most space on top. There is a good chance music will be near the top. If not, select show all. So, when you double tap on music, double tap edit, and then delete. hth Ricardo Walker rica...@appletothecore.info Twitter:@apple2thecore www.appletothecore.info On May 4, 2013, at 10:50 AM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Andrew, You can delete songs, albums or artists directly on the phone. Hi, This is to be expected. If you read with iBooks, google play books, or nook, you will get a similar result. RE: Purchased Kindle books do not appear in iTunes when looking at the device connected
Another thought someone had was that they would block books from showing up if they were books that the Kindle reader was not allowed to read with synthesized speech. They thus supposed that the books that were allowed to be read by speech on the Kindle may not be locked and would show up in the iTunes library. As I only have a few books and some of them are free, I can not say. But, I am beginning to believe as you suggest, that it is an Amazon restriction of some kind. RE: Can I have more than one e-mail account on an iDevice?
Hi Sieghard, Thanks for the info, once an account was set up, how would I switch from one to the other to check mail? Is there something like switch account, that I'd double tap on and then accounts would be in a list and I just select the one I wish to view and it takes me to the inbox of that account and starts automatically downloading mail? -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, 5 May 2013 1:00 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Can I have more than one e-mail account on an iDevice? Re: How do I keep a permanent copy of the books I download to the iPhone
You can save books on your pc, and read them, if you install the accessible kindle for pc app. Be sure to install the accessible for pc app, as opposed to the regular one. You will know it is the correct one if it it is some 200 meg, as compared to maybe 20 meg for the regular app. Arnold Schmidt - Original Message - From: Neal Ewers To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, May 04, 2013 2:51 PM Subject: RE: How do I keep a permanent copy of the books I download to the iPhone Alan, thanks for the tip about iBooks. That strengthens my theory that the inability to do this with the Kindle app is exactly what either Amazon, Apple, or both wanted to do. How silly. You purchase a book and it is totally tied to some cloud some place and cannot be put on your computer. I'm not sure the issue here, in that the books are assigned a code given your sine in credentials thus you can't share them. And that's not why I want to have access to them anyway. I may contact Amazon and ask why this is done. Yes, the Kindle device itself will allow certain books to be read aloud, but I don't believe you can do this with all books. I don't believe the iPhone App has that limitation, but I am not positive about that. I am reading Harry Potter, and I'm guessing that would not be a book that one can read with speech on the actual Kindle. I should check that out. I have the app and it's totally accessible. It creates a folder within iTunes, iTunes Media, books. Any books you buy or download from the apple store go into that folder. You can do what you will with your books. And, if you download other books from other sorceress like txt format etc, you can drop those too into that folder. When you then sync your phone with iTunes, those books you dropped into the books folder get synced to your iPhone. Note: iBooks does not read .EPUB (Kindle) book format books. However, the Kindle book reader does read most all popular formats. I've downloaded the free Kindle app and it doesn't seem to let you keep your books on your computer unless I'm missing something. It looks to me like Amazon was just giving in to the demand for accessibility of Kindle books by iPhone users. The actual Kindle hardware is accessible. It has been so for some time. I bought my daughter who loves to read a Kindle several years ago for Christmas. One day she called me up on the phone and said, hey dad, listen to this and I heard the book being read by a screen reader. They have improved quite a bit on that and all kindles today have a text to speech reading option. The Kindle is a good book reading device and very limited as a computer. RE: changing we fi settings
Hello Crystal, Not certain if somebody has already helped you on this or not. If you are trying to change over to a different encryption on a Wi-Fi. Several things have to happen. First, if you are simply just want to start over with an existing connection you have with a Wi-Fi. You just need to go to the Settings - Wi-Fi. Now find the connections you want to change. Find the More Info for it. Double tap on this. You will find the Forget This Network button. Go ahead and double tap on this. Now you can re-connect to this Wi-Fi again in providing the credentials for that Wi-Fi. Understand that the iPhone is smart enough to know if you are going to a WEP or to a WPA encryption. So once the credentials are entered. You are done. It will set up based on the encryption on for that Wi-Fi. On the actual Wi-Fi router itself. This is where if one wants to change the type of encryption. There are no protection, WEP, WPA, WPA-2, and so and so on. Once you tell the router what encryption you want. Reboot it. Go back to your iPhone and do the steps I have mentioned above. It will then automatically know what encryption the Wi-Fi router has set for it. Lastly, there is a section for the more advanced users. If you go to the Wi-Fi page it. Find the Other button. Double tap on this will lead you to a page where you can manually enter a network name plus the encryption type. You must correctly enter the exact same information that was given to you by the router or by a person with that knowledge. It will then prompt for credentials if needed. RE: Mail When Away From Home?
Hello Jenny, It sounds like the SMTP is not set up correctly or least that is what I think your problems is at. If you go to the Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendar. On this page it should have your email account that you are using. If you double tap on this account. This will bring up your e-mail account settings. On this page make sure that your SMTP is set up correctly. In most cases it also may require that you enter a password for the SMTP. If you need any more information. Let us know. It depends. There are some comic books and such that can't be read at all because the text is written in thought bubbles. If you have that kind of book, it likely won't read. RE: How do I keep a permanent copy of the books I download to the iPhone
Well, Yes, I have the PC Kindle reader and it is very nice and accessible. But the book it accesses is not in any place I can find on my computer. I simply purchased it and it is on the cloud and on my device. I don't know if the book on my computer is really on the cloud or if it is on the computer. If it's on the computer, it is hidden. I have done a total computer search for all possible Kindle book file endings and it does not appear. So, making a backup copy of it is impossible. But, back to the computer version of the app. It is very nice and it syncs up with where you left off when reading on the device. Re: A Bluetooth keyboard question
Hi. This was an issue for me, too. The short answer is that it depends on the individual keyboard. Using my Amazon Basics keyboard I can input phone numbers into my contacts and even use the keyboard numbers row to make a call, but I can't use the keyboard to input numbers for things like checking my bank or credit card balance., but some people can using other brands. I've just resorted to using a headset while on those kinds of calls. It seems very difficult at first, but it does get easier to use those automated menus. Hello Jenny, Well, you would think that. Sometimes if your e-mail is coming from the provider that is the same provider that gives you the internet bandwidth. At times, I have seen where it isn't required as long you are inside of the network. Once, you stop outside that becomes a whole different ball of wax. This is only one suggestions and hopefully.
