Re: Question about sending an e-mail to a group in IOS
There are two ways to set up group email lists in iOS 7. The first way has been around for a while and was shown to me last year. It involves writing each email address manually into one email address field in the contact. The email addresses need to be separated by commas (I think). Basically, it is written the way email address strings are shown in Google. I haven't done it for a while, so do not remember the exact formatting parameters. The second way was set up by Apple in iOS 7. I stumbled upon it and use it all the time now. When an email is written, Apple Mail remembers all the contact names and/or email addresses which were placed in the to field after the email has been sent. When one of the names is partially typed into the to field again, check the name suggestion options. First is the name and email address. Below are the groups that the name / email address has been used within. Note that these choices usually cannot be flicked to. Instead, one must vertically slide one's finger slowly down the display and stop movement each time a new group is announced. Waiting will list all the names in the group. It may well be that hints need to be turned on for this to work. I almost always leave hints on now because hints also causes VO to read the preview amount of each message when in the list of email messages. My problem with TapTapSee has always been the fact that I cannot send a question along with the image. As for labels being read, whether it is a human, or a computer, print is not like braille. If the camera is moving, in the slightest, print blurs. If the camera is tilted at all, in any direction, from the plain of the writing, parallax causes parts of the text to look very different, and may well make it unreadable. If the lighting is blocked in any way, shading may well shadow parts of the text and cause the text to become unreadable. If the camera is too close to the text, the text may become so large in the picture that only part of it is there. If the camera is too far, the text becomes so small that it cannot be recognised. And, when two or more of these factors are combined, it becomes even more difficult to recognise / read the text. Oh, and let's not forget, if the camera lens becomes too smudged, text and other images become blurry. If your recognition images have been getting worse over time, the first thing I would do is use windex on the camera lens. According to what I have read, Apple suggests only using Windex to cleanse the special glass which covers the camera lens. Eileen, I am afraid I am one of the few people on this list who has never really liked TapTapSee. When it was free it was at worst a dubious tool for me, but with the advent of the credit system I just deleted it from my phone. The tools I tend to use for various types of identification are: textGrabber, camFind, and red laser. As for fortune cookies, I have never had one! I can only imagine that the print is very small and His Honour tiny piece of paper? This would, probably, pose a problem for most of the OCR packages. However, I will say this: textGrabber has developed into a really useful scanning tool. It works well FreeHand nowadays. It is easy to turn the flash on which greatly improves your results. The only time it has let me down was, in fact, yesterday. I was attempting to show the app off to some other VO users while we were all travelling together on the train. In the past, I have used, with some success, both Prizmo and TextGrabber while travelling on the train. But because TextGrabber has developed a more effective automatic focusing system, which works well in a steady environment, The movement of the train meant it can no longer work there. A small price to pay for a really excellent app. Speaking personally, rather than use a nap like TapTapSee, I would prefer, if it was really necessary, to Either use FaceTime or even Facebook to get help from others to identify something for which my other apps will not work. Sorry to inject levity into this discussion but my fortune the other day at the Chinese restaurant was how deep would the oceans be if there were no sponges. If most fortunes are like that, I'm not sure you're missing much. To keep this on topic, I would think an app like Text Grabber might work better but you've got the issues of the very tiny print and the curling paper to deal with. We can't assume that what we wish to know is obvious to them any more than they could or necessarily should assume that they can deduce exactly that you wanted the actual text of the fortune. In truth I'm amazed that it came out clearly enough for someone to eventually recognize for you. Again I'm not disagreeing that an ask a specific question via text feature in the app isn't greatly longed for and perhaps necessary to enhance its usefulness. I'm just saying that I'm glad your rant was first directed at us as opposed to them (smile). Perhaps when the heat of the moment has dissipated a request for such a feature and explanation of how it could only benefit both users of the app and those who recognize images might be easier for you to send their way. Hi Sandy, I have never used Texj Grabber in a moving vehicle. I'll have to store that in my tips bag for the future. Thanks for the tip on using Facetime. I have never used it, so I'll have to read up on what is involved. I do have plenty of family and friends that have iPhones. Also, MBraille now supports a dot command for it, so it will make it a snap to use it. With Red Laser, it has been hit and miss if I can find the barcode and get it to work. I usually end up using Digit-Eyes or Talking Goggles, which depends on what I need to identify. Text Grabber is my app of choice with the StandScan. It is more accurate than my scan and read software and hardware on my PC. Oh by the way, a cookie fortune is a tiny piece of paper maybe 1/2 X 1-1/2 in size (approx.). use of face time
I was reading through the discussion on Tap Tap See and someone brought up Face Time. I would like to hear how people have used Face Time. I will share a story where it helped me. I was walking home and was off in my own world instead of paying attention. I passed my house and needed help finding it. I called someone on Face Time and by showing the person what was around me I was able to get to my house. Without Face Time I would have retraced my steps until I found a landmark that was familiar and tried again but it sure aved me time. I don't use it often but when I do it is very handy and is on the phone. there is the Looktel Recognizer that will do that and more. You can go to Applevis.com and go to the podcast of a demo from one of the members. The Looktel Recognizer seems to be a great app for us and very versatile. Worth the time to listen to the podcast. Braile playing cards will solve that problem. I taught a woman enough braille to be able to play cards. She was in her 80s and didn't care about anything else she could do with braille. Hi Sieghard, Let me just say that the ability to send text, since the app is already sending an image, is basically trivial. Now this does not address how the back end that the app uses deals with the text sent or if it can actually receive anything but images. However, as far as sending text from an app is concerned, it's basically super easy. :) I really feel that one point is almost being missed here, which is that if there is a question field for the customer, sure, images may still come back with no usable results, but at least the customer can be alerted to this and why this has happened, (I.E. image is too dark, or no clear text in image etc.) so the customer can more easily correct any issues. So in this respect I completely agree with Kay here. This app's main purpose is too assist blind and visually impaired people. If these are the concerns that are important to this population then the app does need to address these concerns, or at least attempt to. As you say, perhaps Tap Tap See is in fact addressing these concerns, so we'll see... Excellent Points David! :) Let me add to this that also, occasionally, a label may be designed in such a way that a logo or color scheme is not optimal for the particular lighting conditions or may simply be printed in colors which do not show up well for easy reading, even by humans. Just thought I mention that for me asking family or friends for help in a live video session has been a useful tool for a long time. I have done this with my parents or a friend even before I had my first iPhone almost 4 years ago at which time I used Skype at home with my desktop and a web cam. I do, by the way, find that Skype works better if you are out and about and have a poor 3G connection. The advantage of Facetime of course is that another iPhone user can be called any time whereas with Skype he or she would have to be online. One example where using this method was very useful was when I dropped a glove once because I stuck it under my arm while I was checking a message on my phone. It dropped and I had already walked maybe 20 steps before I noticed. Since there was snow on the ground and I was wearing heavy winter boots trying to walk around until I might step on it was not much of an option, so I just called my Mom on Facetime, told her and then pointed the camera down in front of me and started walking back. After about 10 or 12 steps my Mom said it was right there in front and a bit to the right and it was just like she was standing behind me. When I picked it up I still had the phone focused on it so she saw my hand and could say things Another 2 feet and a bit to the right and so on. I also used Skype in this way when the tech support person for my Sawstop table saw need the serial number off my saw. I hadn't asked somebody yet and written it down, but he told me exactly where on the saw the label was and I could easily feel it and hold the camera so he could read it. He was a bit surprised when I first told him that I was blind, but he knew that there are some blind woodworkers out there and he happened to have his own Skype account which he gave me so he could help me out. A third example where I use Facetime or Skype is when I am at a trade show and I want to show my staff at home in my store some product maybe to get their thoughts on colours or style of a particular piece of clothing. I think having a few family members or friends who don't mind being called upon for this kind of thing is one of the most useful tools and the quality of information usually beats any of the apps out there. I guess it's up to anybody to set up such a private network for this purpose. Of course this is not appropriate at any time of the day and apps like Camfind, Tap Tap See, Digit Eyes, Red Laser, Talking Goggles etc. still have their place, but using Facetime or Skype live with a real person to me is the best and most efficient solution. Cara, Maybe I wasn't clear. When I was talking about sending text I meant that it would send a question which one could type into a text box rather than recording it in one's own voice. One could of course then use Dictation to quickly record a short question as in most cases the question would be short. In my thinking this might be a better option than recording a question like what VizWiz does since a short snipped of text would be transmitted a lot faster than a piece of audio. I think if Tap Tap See had a picker box with certain well thought out questions like What information is displayed on this LED screen, Who is the sender of this letter/package or What colour is this piece of clothing etc. in addition to a text field it's usefulness and the quality of the results would be greatly increased. Configuring Spotlight Search
Hi, I'm attempting to stop my iPhone 4S from indexing on iOS 7. Unfortunately, when I go to Spotlight Search, I can't seem to find a way to check and uncheck the specific features I want indexed. I only get something like Music or Contacts followed by the drag and drop component. Tapping on the specific function gets me nothing. Can someone help? I have tried a few, but found none is very accurate and consistent. The problem with using the iPhone is that you are dealing with constantly changing light conditions, shadows and so on. Some people have reported they get very good results with Tap Tap See because I assume a person provides the feedback, but then again we are bac to the discussion about the fact you have to pay to use Tap Tap See. You would be better off investing the $150 or whatever it is to get a good stand-alone colour identifier from a place like Maxiaids or Blind Mice Mart. The one I have had for probably at least 10 or 15 years is I think the Colorino Colour Identifier which I am quite sure is still sold. It can identify about 150 colours and usually it does a great job. I assume you're adding a book to your wish list and then downloading it to your phone through the BARD Mobile app itself, e.g. you're not using iTunes, DropBox or any other intermediate system or application. If so, this should work. I've downloaded dozens of books to my iPhone through the BARD Mobile app, and I've never seen the problem you've described. Have you waited until the book is completely downloaded? You'll get a dialog letting you know the download is complete and then you can start playing it by going into the book shelf tab. You need to keep the BARD Mobile app in the foreground while you're waiting for the download to finish. I just downloaded and started reading the November playboy without difficulty. A novel I am currently reading is The Man from Nowhere. I have just over four GB on my device. I did this just last night with my sighted wife when she asked me to go downstairs and grab a particular pill bottle. She was busy doing something else so I fired up Facetime on my iPhone and connected with her iPad and she directed me to the right bottle. I do this all the time with mail or if I'm looking for a particular piece of paper and find it easier to Skype or Facetime my sister or wife or someone else sighted who can tell me what it is or read me a specific piece of information that I need quickly. Since there was snow on the ground and I was wearing heavy winter boots trying to walk around until I might step on it was not much of an option, so I just called my Mom on Facetime, told her and then pointed the camera down in front of me and started walking back. After about 10 or 12 steps my Mom said it was right there in front and a bit to the right and it was just like she was standing behind me. When I picked it up I still had the phone focused on it so she saw my hand and could say things Another 2 feet and a bit to the right and so on. I also used Skype in this way when the tech support person for my Sawstop table saw need the serial number off my saw. I hadn't asked somebody yet and written it down, but he told me exactly where on the saw the label was and I could easily feel it and hold the camera so he could read it. He was a bit surprised when I first told him that I was blind, but he knew that there are some blind woodworkers out there and he happened to have his own Skype account which he gave me so he could help me out. A third example where I use Facetime or Skype is when I am at a trade show and I want to show my staff at home in my store some product maybe to get their thoughts on colours or style of a particular piece of clothing. I think having a few family members or friends who don't mind being called upon for this kind of thing is one of the most useful tools and the quality of information usually beats any of the apps out there. I guess it's up to anybody to set up such a private network for this purpose. Of course this is not appropriate at any time of the day and apps like Camfind, Tap Tap See, Digit Eyes, Red Laser, Talking Goggles etc. still have their place, but using Facetime or Skype live with a real person to me is the best and most efficient solution. That's what I ended up doing, but previously I could drop them directly into the PC connected iPhone- 1 step instead of 2 (adding to playlist and then syncing). Have noticed that Siri doesn't seem to recognize Outlook's full name field if you have also added a nickname in the display name field. You might want to go into the fields on either the source file for your contacts or into the fields on your phone and see if there is a detectable pattern for which names Siri recognizes and which she does not. I highly recommend Rainbow Color Reader -- a stand alone color identifier for $99. It is extremely accurate. I have not had luck with the color ID apps for iPhone, though I have not tried CamFind yet and am looking forward to doing so. Viphone lister’s I too would like to be able to add some text or a recording to help get what I want. But I find that the people on this list thought Tap Tap See was a wonderful app and did not complain about it when it was free but now that they have to pay they are moaning and groaning about their results they get. They did not complain when they took picture after picture and thought it was great. I think these app that assist us are great and we need to wake up and smell the roses as to how well we all have it. So let say about ten years ago how did you all identify jars, can good and other items? It wasn’t to many years back as I remember we did not have all those devices and app to assist us in our everyday lives like we do now. Yes it would great if Tap Tap See would add a recording or a place to type in the question we want answered. But by us not supporting them by buying the pictures how is it ever going to happen. I think we need to be more patient and see what they do in the future. Also, the back button in email attachments cannot be flicked to. Find the top left corner of your screen, and move down just past the status bar. I did keep the iPhone app in the foreground. As near as I can tell, the files never completely downloaded. Shortly before a given file would have finished, when the progress bar was at over 90%, a dialog box popped say Ong that the file was not extractrmed and giving me the option to retry or cancel. Retry would restart a fruitless download. Cancel would remove the title from the wish list entirely. Unfortunately you didn't include the message thread you're replying to, so sorry if I'm repeating what someone else already suggested or said. When I download a book to my iPhone, I usually get the message popping up right after I hit 85% complete stating the book was downloaded. I never see it get to 90% on my iPhone. In an earlier message, did you say you had 2G free? I'd think this would be more than enough. Is the book you're downloading particularly large? Have you tried this with multiple books? I think you said you already tried restarting your phone and removing and reinstalling the BARD Mobile app. Is this true? When you start a download, have you gone through the App Switcher and removed all of the other apps? Maybe you don't have enough working memory when the BARD Mobile app goes to extract the files from the ZIP file. Did you mention what model of iPhone you're using? I seem to recall it was a 4S. If so, the older the model the more important it would be to make sure you have enough memory freed up before downloading a book. Finally, I've never seen this issue on my 4S, so you may just need to contact your local Talking book program to see if they can help. I think we vote with our dollars. If Tap Tap See were a paid app from the get_go, that would be one thing. I don't mind paying for a picture if it returns the result I need. Sense that's not going to happen, I'm voating with my money. I'm not buying either version. Several months ago, if I took a picture of a fortune cookie paper, which I had done, it would be read the first time. This is not the case any more. I have meat in my freezer which I buy by the side and by the pig and It does not have bar codes on it and just has labels that have to be read. Hi! First I have respect for everyone in this list so please understand that this is not towards anyone! Ok... You know, we are all humans and so are the developers and picture viewer people. So, the developer is so nice enough to monitor this high traffic list and answer taptapsee question. Imagine how many emails they have to deal with from this list just to get feedback from customers? I think we should respect what they do instead of complaining. I am sure taptapsee person who is in this list respond as it is weekend and they are off i guess... I think we are just being too impatient and accepting too much from them. We should wait and I am sure they will add the ability to ask question. If we want to complain and stop supporting developers, then we should be aware that its not going to help! Give them time and support! Fortune papers are hard to read for a human eye to begin with. I think I am not surprised it took time and in fact, I would not have even expected it to recognize that quick! We should appreciate at least some parts of it. Thanks for reading! Well said, Ed, it’s amazing how upset some people get when something that was free or cheaper suddenly costs something or costs more. I remember when Fleksy first came out it was $14.99, then it dropped to $4.99 and then it was free. This was the reverse yet then of course some people (I do say “some” because others had no problem with this) complaint because they bought it and now it was free. Of course it doesn’t matter that this happens evey day at your local supermarket, drug store or department store. Stuff goes on sale and stuff goes off sale, some stuff gets cheaper and some stuff increases in price. Just because Tap Tap See, same developer as Camfind, by the way, offered their service for free for a year or so doesn’t mean they have to continue to do so if they realize they can’t keep it up and they are losing money. Having said that, everybody of course decides what they want to spend money on and what not, we all have to set our priorities. But bashing the app because now sending a picture costs 8 Cents and not every picture comes back with the perfect answer somebody is looking for or because somebody maybe hasn’t learned to take proper pictures certainly is not very constructive. Hey! There is a difference between constructive and destructive criticism and I think for the most part everybody is being constructive in what they are saying. Just to add to this. I have a C Crane radio which has the 2 meter ham band. Since I wanted to set the five presets, I attempted to use Taptapsee to identify the digits on the display. I am pretty sure I had the display on focus with good lighting. So I took the picture and was told that it was a gray Crane radio. This sort of thing just adds to my frustration. In fairness to the software, I have gotten good results on other occasions. For instance, some argue that the Movie Vault on www.blindmicemegamall.com is illegal because it offers downloads of audio-only described movies and TV shows. Others argue that www.blindy.tv is illegal because it re-transmits, though does not let you download, described content and no one knows where that comes from. This website does seem quite vague, i must admit. Is their material sourced from movie and TV producers? Obtained legally some other way? illegal? What exactly are their service plans? What do they offer for content? Pricing? Availability? I don't see anything wrong with signing up now. If the service appears to be somewhat questionable from a legal point of view as things develop, it is easy enough to cancel a subscription. There's nothing that requires us of the stage to use this as our ongoing source for obtaining material if the business model concerns anybody. Can I stop some files from being backed up?
Hello, can I stop photos from being backed up to either my Mac ore iCloud from an iPad? My wife has 11gig of photos on her iPad. We already have the photos stored on both of our computers. So I don't wish to back them up again. Also we only have 5gig on iCloud so I don't wish to back up them there either. Thanks for any advice. What you describe in the following message makes me think you have an unusual problem. Usually, when a book gets to about 85 per cent (I gather that it actually is downloading and being processed faster than the download meter is running), it usually gives a chime sound, then says the download is complete with an okay button. You say it gives an error message before it ever gets to this point. I thought you were meaning that the downloading and processing completed successfully, but it then gave an error message saying you are not authorized to play this book when you try to play it, which is another problem that has cropped up occasionally. If you write to bardmobile support, and they can figure it out, let us know the resolution. When trying to move taptapsy to another page it disappeared. So I downloaded it again. It showed nothing about the 100 credits I had purchased before trying to move the app. So, I purchased again hoping that at least Apple/iTunes kept a record of my purchase and today I learned that I was charged for another 100 credits. I doubt it'll help, but after reinstalling the BARD Mobile app, shutdown the phone with a long press of the lock button and restart your iPhone. It's just another thing to try. I'm sure there are multiple ways to do this, but double tap and hold on the folder name, or any app or folder name on your home page. Do this before opening the folder who's name you want to change. Now double tap on the folder who's name you want to change, and you'll see that the name of the folder is now an edit field. Double tap on the name, and your keyboard will appear. I've always wondered what the motivation was behind blind people questioning the legality of services like the Movie Vault from BlindMice and blindy.tv. Sure if it were obviously illegal, or the blind would face some retaliation from the movie industry or if the movie industry itself were actually being harmed, I could understand why blind people would bring this up, but other than that, I don't see why blind people would want to see a service that some people enjoy and take advantage of be declared illegal and cease to exist. I'm not familiar with blindy.tv, but in the Movie Vault you have MP3 files containing movie sound tracks along with described video. I simply can't imagine sighted people taking advantage of this and stop going to theaters or buying DVD's or streaming movies from services like NetFlix. I'd also be shocked if there were that many blind people who are listening to these MP3's that would otherwise be buying, renting or streaming these movies, at least in numbers that would even register at all on a production company's bottom line. Like I said, I can't imagine these services are in any way negatively impacting the movie industry. That being said, I'd be interested to hear from a lawyer who looked into this issue and could point out which laws are being violated and how the various laws allowing media to be altered to be accessible do not apply in these cases. I'm not sayhing blind people should run out and knowingly break the law by pirating music, videos or applications, but in issues where it isn't very clear at all, I don't see the point in this idle speculation. Skype issue on Iphone 5.
Hello list, my friend has iphone 5 and she has some issues with her Skype. She is always seen as being online although she has her phone switched off at nights. It might be very confusing for her skype friends. Please does anyone know how to fix this? Removing skype from app switcher does not work at all. Thank you for your help in advance. Hi go to settings iCloud and turn off photos on the iPad, on the mac go to System Preferences iCloud and uncheck photos.
