Sieghard,

I have to strongly agree with you. It seems apparent to me that Apple is
devoting its resources to things other than making Siri smarter. Alexa is so
far ahead of Siri that I hardly bother with Siri anymore. I expect Apple enjoys
a much higher profit margin from its hardware devices than from allocating
resources to making Siri more intelligent.

Yes, it's all the basic stuff and after over 6 years of SIRI the thing still
doesn't even support multiple timers. I guess if you are heating up Pizza a
single timer is OK, but if you are cooking something more elaborate where you
want a 45 minute timer so you know when the scalopped potatos need to come out
of the oven, you then want a 15 minute timer for something else and a 3-minute
timer because you don't want to overdo the garlic which you put in the saute
pan then SIRI is useless and it's Alexa to the rescue.
Oh yes, and the article forgot to mention that translation doesn't even work in
Canada where last time I checked we also spoke English. I think SIRI must be
one of Apple's biggest, unacknowledged embarrassments ever as it can do little
more now in 2018 than it could do when it came out in 2011..

>From getting the latest news to checking the weather, discover more ways that
>Siri on HomePod can help you get answers to everyday questions.
Plan ahead
Siri on HomePod can help you check the weather, find places to go, and check
traffic so you can get to where you're going on time.

Check the weather
Want to know if you should wear a coat or bring an umbrella? Just ask Siri.
Say "Hey Siri," then say something like:
. "What's the temperature outside?"
. "Do I need an umbrella today?"
. "How's the weather tomorrow?"

Find places
Want to try a new restaurant? Or want to know what time the grocery store
closes? Just ask Siri. Say "Hey Siri," then you can ask things like:
. "Where's a great place to eat Mexican food?"
. "What time does the Apple Store close?"
. "Where's the closest gas station?"

Check traffic
Whether you're on your way to work or just want to know how long it takes to
get somewhere, Siri can help. Say "Hey Siri," then say something like:
. "What's the traffic like getting to work?"
. "How long does it take to drive to San Antonio?"

Stay up to date
Catch up on current events, sports, stocks, and more with Siri.

Get the latest news
You can get news briefs from the top news sources in the world. Say "Hey Siri,"
then say something like:
. "What's the news today?"
. "Give me the latest sports news."
Want to switch to a different news source? Say something like, "Hey Siri,
switch to NPR instead."

Catch up on sports
Want to know who won between the Cavs and the Warriors? Or when the Panthers
play next? Siri knows. Say "Hey Siri," then you can say things like:
. "What teams are playing in the World Cup?"
. "Did the Spurs win last night?"
. "How many completions did Joe Montana have?"

Check stocks
Stay up to date on the stock market, prices, news, and more with Siri. Say "Hey
Siri," then say something like:
. "How's the stock market doing today?"
. "What's the market capitalization of Apple?"

know and do in your home. Here's what you can do.

Cook with Siri
Need a little help in the kitchen? Siri can help you measure ingredients, set a
timer, and even help you count calories. Say "Hey Siri," then you can say
things like:
. "How many cups are in a quart?"
. "Set a timer for 45 minutes."
. "Pause the timer."
. "How much time is left on the timer?"
. "How many calories are in an ounce of cheddar cheese?"

RE: Please Join Me in Requesting That the Yelp for iOS Category List View Bug Be Resolved

2018-04-07 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Cristóbal,

First, if you are using iTunes 12.7 or later, App Store access was removed.

Second, if, like me, you prefer to write App reviews on a desktop and submit
them via iTunes, you can install iTunes 12.6.3. This version does have access
to both Apps and the App Store.

Below my signature, you will find the text to my original post on this subject.

Good Luck,

Mark

Apple has quietly released iTunes 12.6.3, which reintroduces the ability to
download App Store apps and ringtones from within the iTunes desktop software.

Apple is making this version of iTunes available because "certain business
partners might still need to use iTunes to install apps", but the download is
basically available to anyone looking to reinstate the functionality that was
removed in iTunes 12.7.

If you've already installed a newer version of iTunes, you can download this
version of iTunes on your Mac, PC 32-bit or PC 64-bit and run the installer.
After installation is complete, you can continue to deploy apps with iTunes.
You won't be prompted to download new versions of iTunes after you install this
version.
Installation packages for Mac and PC (32-bit and 64-bit) are available for
download on the support page. After the installation, most users will need to
rebuild their iTunes Library. To do this, hold down the Option key when the app
launches and in the dialog window that appears choose "Create Library...". Give
the new library a name that's different to your existing library, and then
migrate over your albums using the Add to Library...
option under the Files menu.

Apple released iTunes 12.7 in September and said the new version was designed
to focus solely on music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and audiobooks, which was
the reason behind the removal of the built-in App Store. Following the change,
apps and ringtones could only be downloaded on an iOS device.

This special "business edition" of iTunes includes compatibility with iOS 11,
iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. It's not clear how long Apple will offer
iTunes 12.6.3, and the company does not provide technical support for this
version, but for those who want the functionality it could be a useful
makeweight until Apple comes up with an alternative solution.

Siegard! How do I reboot my router as you suggested? I thought that I had,
already, downloaded the
Google Assistant app as I know that I have used OK Google in the past, but I
don't see G A in my app
store so that, I guess, means that I haven't got it!

Hi Jewel,

While I just posted a message criticising SIRI as well I must say that it is
not SIRI's fault if it
can't properly connect to the internet. Have you rebooted your router to see if
that helps?
Also, the only way to use Google and SIRI is to have the Google app installed
and set up to accept
"OK Google" as a command to bring up the Google Assistant and then to use SIRI
to say "hey SIRI,
open Google". Then once the Google app is open you can say "OK Google" followed
by your question.

Ever since I updated to IOS11.3 I have had problems with Siri. I wake him up

There is a complete silence and then, he will say: "I am having trouble making

Kelly, that's understandable and that's so right. Neither one of us feel the
strong need to get the newest phone or any other newest thing, as long as my
phone is still working that's what I care about. I'm not into the idea of
changing phones every year or every 2 years, that's not for me, but I hear
of people that do that. I still use some button phones that I'll never stop

Interesting that you recommend the SE and the 7 Plus, a huge step up in
size. I think unless somebody specifically wants a Plus size phone the
regular iPhone 7 would be a better choice and also less expensive.

Bill, as relatively new iphone users, we chose the se phones, we like it
for it's size, it's very smooth operating experience when using the phone
and it will have your standard audio jack. We can definitely recomend the
se. We believe this would be a great choice. However, if you wanted to
step
out a little our other recomendation at this time would be the 7 plus.
With

the 7 plus I believe you get an adaptor so you would have your audio
physically connected to your phone. I've heard the bluetooth has gotten
better when it comes to audio. Anyway the 7 plus is a nice phone, just a
little more money. Good luck, Bill with all this information that you

I would point out that the iPhone SE is the same size as the 5s and is

But, in Writer, there is a button to use for selecting smaller chunks, but it

If you do not have Text Selection on your rotor, I would recommend going in

A review of Aira. What it is, how it works, and the ways it has changed my
  life
by Jonathan Mosen, Posted on 03/04/2018

  Introduction
Recently, I was pleased to attend the CSUN assistive technology
conference.
I've had the privilege of going to 10 of these before, but it has been a
few
years since I was there last.
When you're involved with an industry, you tend to watch developments so
closely that changes usually seem incremental. But occasionally, something
new comes along that is so game changing, it stops you in your tracks. For
me, San Diego-based Aira is one such technology. I am late to this party.
Aira has been rolling out for some time in the United States. And indeed,
we
covered Aira in an edition of The Blind Side Podcast last year. But since
mentioning my Aira experience to people via outlet such as my Internet
radio
show, The Mosen Explosion, I've learned that not everyone yet fully
understands what the service is or how it works. For those not familiar
with
Aira, or who would like to read someone else's impressions of it, read on.
  What is Aira
  According to the company's website,
Aira is today's fastest growing assistive community. One tap of a button
instantly connects you with a sighted professional agent who delivers
visual
  assistance anytime and anywhere.
Here's what that means in practice. At present, Aira is a smart phone app,
available for iOS and Android. Since Aira is a service for blind people,
it's no surprise that the app is exemplary in terms of its accessibility.
And in iOS, it even sports Siri integration.
Using the app, you can connect via video, much like a FaceTime call, with
agents who can provide you with visual information. Audio quality is
excellent, far clearer than a standard cell phone connection. Essentially,
an Aira agent can tell you anything at all that a pair of functioning eyes
can see, plus perform a range of tasks pertaining to that information.
You can acquire the visual information using your smart phone's camera,
or,
when you become a subscriber to the Aira service (Aira calls its customers
"explorers") you receive a pair of smart glasses. These are included as
part
of your subscription, so there's no hardware cost upfront.
The service is available officially in the United States at present, where
Aira has an arrangement with AT Aira explorers receive an AT MiFi
device, allowing them to use the service on the go without the data
consumed
by the video connection eating up a customer's own cellular plan. If you
have a cellular plan equipped with the personal hotspot feature, you are
free to pair your Aira glasses with your phone using that method. For
those
with large data plans, this may be attractive because there is one less
device to keep track of, carry, and charge. The downside, other than the
data consumption, is that a video connection to Aira for a long time may
cause significant battery drain on your smart phone.

RE: Upgrade process from iPhone 5S

2018-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Arlene,

I think you would be surprised how many people keep the iPhone for at least 3
and sometimes 4 years. Yes, there are the techy people and those who just want
to have the latest and quite a few are probably on these expensive plans which
allow them to trade in their phone every year, but there are also a lot of as
Kelly said budget conscious owners who either can't afford that or they just
don't see the need for it. When I bought my first iPhone, an iPhone 4 in 2010,
I also ended up selling it the following year to buy the 4S in 2011 because it
was quite a big upgrade and the 4S was the first phone with SIRI. After that I
also upgraded every 2 years, the 5S in 2013 and the 6S Plus in 2015, but now
for the first time I have kept my 6S Plus for a third year. As I said, I'll
probably get a battery replacement at some point this year at Apple's
discounted price and I'm not at all sure if I will upgrade even this fall. If
my 6S Plus gets a new battery it can probably do at least another year because
otherwise I am very happy with the phone. I think Face Id is neat and wireless
charging is cool, but it's not like I have to have this. Given the somewhat
mediocre reception of the iPhone X I think I don't at all mind waiting until
Apple has figured out where they are going with this. I also very much believe
that there is less need to upgrade this often as these phones mature, in the
early years say between 2007 and 2013 they came a long way and each year the
phone was a pretty major upgrade, but now that the size/form factor seems to
have sort of settled in, cameras while getting improvements with newer phones
are fantastic even on the 6S/6S Plus and for every-day use I doubt you would
notice a huge difference in speed when it comes to opening up apps and so on.
I therefore think people are going to upgrade less often in the future unless
companies bring down the costs of the types of plans where that is possible.
Here in Canada we pay some of the highest prices for cell phone and fast
internet service and the plan I am on with Koodo Mobile, an MVNO owned by
Telus, is too good to give up. I pay $49 + taxes for unlimited Canada wide
calling and texting, basic voice mail and 6Gb of data. That of course is $49
Canadian and with taxes added on that is about $40 US at the current exchange
rate. I would pay at least $90 if I had a similar plan from one of the big 3
here, Bell, Telus or Rogers and while this would allow me to buy a subsidised
new phone every 2 years, it's not worth it.
Let's consider a 4-year term so 48 months. Let's also assume the phone will
cost me $1,100 Canadian, but subsidised it is only $400 Canadian and I am
buying a new phone every 2 years.
This means I will pay $90 a months for the plan I want multiplied by 48 months
= $4,320.00. I also bought 2 phones at $400 during that time, one at the
beginning and the second after 2 years which then lasts me for year 3 and 4,
another $800.
Therefore, after 4 years I have spent $5,120.00.
Now in the other scenario let's assume I buy my phone for $1,100 at the
beginning and I keep it for 4 years. I also get to be on my let's say $50 a
month plan.
I now spent $50 for 48 months = $2,400, add to that the phone at full price and
I spend $3,500.
Compared to the other plan I saved $1, 620.00. the iPhone X costs more than
most people spend on a laptop and even the regular iphone 8 with 256Gb of
memory costs as much or more than many laptops. How many people buy a new
laptop every 2 years? I think as the initial fascination with these powerful
little devices wears thin people will realize that they can easily keep them
for 3 or 4 years and that for a relatively small amount they could get the
battery replaced after 2 years to maintain good performance and especially with
iPhones we also know that we get the latest iOS update usually for 5 years.
Yes, the newest phone may have the hardware to support a few new features, but
unless they introduce something pretty spectacular (that goes for Apple as well
as for Google) most phones which are new now or were new in the last couple of
years will do just fine.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: need to know where the options key is on the bluetooth keyboard

2018-04-07 Thread Richard Turner
Arlene,
Do you not have the list of commands?
Control-Options-spacebar is the same as a single finger double tap, so to
activate a button, you would do control-options right arrow to get to the
button, then control-options-spacebar 'to activate the button.
If you are not able to enter text in an edit box, then Quick Nav is on. So when
you land on the edit box, do the control-options-spacebar so VoiceOver says
Text Field, is editing. Then you should be good to go.
With a keyboard, you should seldom need to touch the phone.

everything to my cart, I purchase it on the web page. I pretty much use the app

iPhone to sign in at the member pickup kiosk at the store with my Sam's member

Alan, When you say that you interface with your sams app through your
computer with firefox, can you log into the app on your computer, and or are
you going through the shopping process on the sams web page? I'll have to take
a look at the sams page, and the way you do it, might possibly in away be a bit
easier, more of a sure thing everything on your list added the way it should

Arlene,

I'm always a bit hesitant to answer posts asking for the best way to do
something. The best way can vary widely depending on the individual doing it.
With that said, I use the Sam's club app to interface with my account where I
usually use my computer and Firefox to place my Sam's orders. I make sure that
I add products that I repeatedly buy to a Favorites list which makes ordering
them in the future easier. I'll go online on my computer, add the items I want
to my cart, and then purchase them. I'll get notified via email and the app
when the order is ready to pick up and I go to my local Sam's where the items
are in a cart ready to pick up and depart with after I've signed in at the
pickup kiosk within the store and a Sam's employee directs me to my stuff. I
suspect this might work differently at different Sam's stores. I know the
process hasn't been identical even at my same store so I suspect it's evolving.

Good luck.

I got the sams app. we didn't get the scan and go. We'd like too pick out
the products on the app to be able to submit to pick up at the store. One of
the sales associate showed us how to shop online with the shopping cart, and
that we could submit the orders of the products to be picked up at the store.
Is this the best way or what way would be the right way to get this done. Also

I am not sure if you are talking about the Sam's app or the scan and go.
The scan and go app allows you to scan your items while shopping. You can then
check out on your phone. I use it all the time.

The Sam's app is for shopping online and also finding in store
availability of items.

2018-04-07 Thread Kelly Pierce
Arlene, these are budget conscious iPhone owners. They have a phone
introduced in 2013. If they keep this new phone for four or five
years like the 5s they now own, they will save money from the cost of
chucking an iPhone after just two years.

2018-04-07 Thread Arlene
We have a friend that provides transportation for us, and she prefers the
larger screen because she doesn't wear her contacts 24 7, and without them
she's just about as blind as we are. The larger screen would probably be great
for a partially sighted friend. Other wise you're correct about the 7 being
less expensive and a nice size phone. In another message I observed someone was
recomending an iphone 8 because it would be more future proof in regards to
being obsolete. While that's correct, most people wouldn't have the same phone
beyond 2 years. So while the 7 is knocking on the 8's backdoor you'd save money
with buying the 7, and would have a simular good experience. If you could
afford the 8, go ahead and buy it.

believe this would be a great choice. However, if you wanted to step out a

Select and explore the Backup area.

Now, as for your other questions:

Since money is of great concern to you, and since I'm almost certain you
do not want to have to deal with the issue of swapping out any of your audio

the price of the 6 S is significantly less than the 7, 8, and 10 series

As far as I know, the only place from which you can purchase a new 6 S

  2.
  You ask:

Bill, I realize that upgrading to a new phone can be very scary and I
don't blame you for hesitating to do so. However, in all things, change is

Yes, the battery replacement program ends at the end of this year. They haven't
specified dates though. If memory serves me right, your phone doesn't have to
fail apple's diagnostics in order to get the battery replaced. Kelly, have you

No, I have carefully checked my Settings and I have almost everything disabled
in Background App refresh and in Location Services everything is as it was. I
have also made no changes otherwise and can confirm that at times the mail app
does seem to use up a lot of battery. During the beta cycle I have also seen
the home screen, the Phone app and SIRI show a lot of battery usage even though
I had not made a lot of calls or used SIRI all that often. The interesting
thing is that most apps or services which showed a lot of battery usage are
Apple apps and services and that to me is concerning.
I have done multiple regular reboots, tried a few hard reboots and Reset
Network Settings and while it’s a bit better now I think it’s still worse than
before and I often have little battery left at the end of a day and that is on
an iPhone 6S Plus where I used to get two days with similar usage patterns.
I do plan to do a full reset of the phone at some point, maybe this weekend,
and set up as a new phone. I think every couple of years doing this is not a
bad idea and I don’t usually keep lots of text message history, all my pictures
go to iCloud and I don’t even store music on my phone any more locally. One of
the most annoying things when I set up as a new phone is the work I have to set
up my mail accounts, log back in to all the other accounts/services I use such
as Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp, my Netatno Weather station, Alexa and other home
automation products we use such as thermostat, lights and lock and so on. Of
course there is rearranging the apps the way I want and creating the folders I
want, nothing is particular difficult but all is time consuming and I bet it’s
going to take 2 to 3 hours to get it all done.

I have no idea why some people experience such battery drain, but I doubt it is
just the iOS. Perhaps the update enabled some settings that people have

Re: Do more with Siri on HomePod, Apple Support

2018-04-07 Thread Jewel
Oh! if it were only that simple.
Ever since I updated to IOS11.3 I have had problems with Siri. I wake him up
and ask my question.
There is a complete silence and then, he will say: "I am having trouble making
a wi-fi connection.
Try again in a moment or two!" which I do; sometimes, it has the desired
effect, sometimes not!
Is there a setting which I should adjust?
As an alternative to Siri, I used to be able to bring up "Google assist" and
"OK Google" but, I
cannot do that any longer. I assume that they are still available and is,
simply, that I have
forgotten how I did it!

Do more with Siri on HomePod
>From getting the latest news to checking the weather, discover more ways
that Siri on HomePod can help you get answers to everyday questions.

Say "Hey
Siri," then say something like:

Say
"Hey Siri," then say something like:
. "How's the stock market doing today?"
. "What's the market capitalization of Apple?"
. "Where's the NASDAQ today?"
. "Compare AAPL and the NASDAQ."

More ways to use Siri on HomePod
Siri on HomePod is great at answering questions about the things you want to
know and do in your home. Here's what you can do.

Cook with Siri
Need a little help in the kitchen? Siri can help you measure ingredients,
set a timer, and even help you count calories. Say "Hey Siri," then you can
say things like:
. "How many cups are in a quart?"
. "Set a timer for 45 minutes."
. "Pause the timer."
. "How much time is left on the timer?"
. "How many calories are in an ounce of cheddar cheese?"

Be on time
Need to wake up early to catch a flight? Or want to check the time in
another city? Siri can help. Say "Hey Siri," then say something like:
. "What time is it in Berlin?"
. "When is daylight saving time?"
. "Wake me up tomorrow at 6:00 a.m."
. "Change my 6:00 a.m alarm to 6:30 a.m."
When the alarm goes off, you can say "Hey Siri, snooze" or "Hey Siri, stop."

Ask Siri to translate
You can ask Siri in English how to say something in Mandarin, Spanish,
French, German, or Italian. Say "Hey Siri," then you can ask things like:
. "How do you say 'nice to meet you' in Mandarin?"
. "How do you say 'thank you' in Italian?"
. "How do you say 'Good Morning' in German?"

Get answers
>From math to pop culture, Siri knows a little bit about everything. Say "Hey
Siri," then you can ask Siri things like:
. "Who sings this song?"
. "What's a 15% tip on $85?"
. "How high is El Capitan?"
. "What movie won Best Picture last year?"

Learn more
. With Personal Requests on HomePod, you can ask Siri to send and read
messages, add reminders, and create notes.
. Turn on lights, adjust the thermostat, and control all of the
products that you use in your home with Siri.
. Use Siri to listen to music and podcasts on HomePod.

Re: A review of Aira. What it is, how it works, and the ways it has changed my life by Jonathan Mosen,

2018-04-07 Thread Richard Turner

Hi,
If you want to select all, I used the rotor Text Selection, which is an Apple
thing, not a Writer feature. You have to enable it in the VoiceOver Rotor
Settings.
But, in Writer, there is a button to use for selecting smaller chunks, but it
is kind of complicated to explain right now.
If you do not have Text Selection on your rotor, I would recommend going in the
settings for Rotor and enabling it by double tapping on it so it says
"selected."

A review of Aira. What it is, how it works, and the ways it has changed my
life
by Jonathan Mosen, Posted on 03/04/2018

Introduction
Recently, I was pleased to attend the CSUN assistive technology conference.
I've had the privilege of going to 10 of these before, but it has been a few
years since I was there last.
And indeed, we
covered Aira in an edition of The Blind Side Podcast last year. But since
mentioning my Aira experience to people via outlet such as my Internet radio
show, The Mosen Explosion, I've learned that not everyone yet fully
understands what the service is or how it works. For those not familiar with
Aira, or who would like to read someone else's impressions of it, read on.
What is Aira
According to the company's website,
Aira is today's fastest growing assistive community. One tap of a button
instantly connects you with a sighted professional agent who delivers visual
assistance anytime and anywhere.
You can acquire the visual information using your smart phone's camera, or,
when you become a subscriber to the Aira service (Aira calls its customers
"explorers") you receive a pair of smart glasses. These are included as part
of your subscription, so there's no hardware cost upfront.
The service is available officially in the United States at present, where
Aira has an arrangement with AT Aira explorers receive an AT MiFi
device, allowing them to use the service on the go without the data consumed
by the video connection eating up a customer's own cellular plan. If you
have a cellular plan equipped with the personal hotspot feature, you are
free to pair your Aira glasses with your phone using that method. For those
with large data plans, this may be attractive because there is one less
device to keep track of, carry, and charge. The downside, other than the
data consumption, is that a video connection to Aira for a long time may
cause significant battery drain on your smart phone.
When you're at home, work, or anywhere that Wi-Fi is available that doesn't
require web-based authentication, you can pair your Aira glasses to that
network. As far as I have been able to ascertain, 5 GHZ Wi-Fi isn't
supported at present.
Because of the need for high quality video, the glasses pair via Wi-Fi, and
not Bluetooth. The glasses are associated with your Aira account. This is
useful if, like in Bonnie's and my house, you're sharing your minutes as a
couple. More on that later.
The upshot of all of this is that for 18 hours of every day, professional,
well-trained sighted assistance is just a

changed my life by Jonathan Mosen,

  Greetings,
I decided to use text selection and select all before VoiceOver locked up,
then copy and paste Mark's message into Writer, then it read well.
So, I copied it back out of Writer and am pasting it below. Hopefully,
whatever was causing the problem is gone.
  Here is Mark's entire message:
  Hello Everyone,

I am posting the following article because it references an iOS app.

The upshot of all of this is that for 18 hours of every day, professional,
well-trained sighted assistance is just a few taps or a Siri command away.
Describing it like this makes it sound kind of cool. But I want to explain
the impact that Aira has had on our lives in the brief time we have had it,
to illustrate that, at least for some of us, this technology is more than
  just pretty cool, it's life-changing.
  My first Aira experience
If you've been reading this blog or listening to The Blind Side Podcast over
the years, you will know that in recent times I have come out as having a
hearing impairment. I love going to these big conferences because I get to
catch up with old friends and make new ones, as well as see the latest and
  greatest

Yes, when I tried to perform a continuous reading command, I lost speech.
The only way I could read it, and I haven’t finished it yet, is to
continually swipe through the article. Don’t know why this occurred.

  Arlene,

Yes, I'm using the ZoomText screen reader and when I go to the Sam's Club
website, I'm automatically logged into my account and I use the search box at
the top of the page when looking for new items or I simply select items I've
saved in my Favorites list or that I've previously purchased. Once I've added
everything to my cart, I purchase it on the web page. I pretty much use the app
for getting notifications of when my purchase is ready to pick up and use my
iPhone to sign in at the member pickup kiosk at the store with my Sam's member
ID code which I've saved in my wallet.

Alan, When you say that you interface with your sams app through your
computer with firefox, can you log into the app on your computer, and or are
you going through the shopping process on the sams web page? I'll have to take
a look at the sams page, and the way you do it, might possibly in away be a bit
easier, more of a sure thing everything on your list added the way it should
be. Thank you.

Also
as she was showing us, she said to search for the product, is that the best way
or is there away to go through the products? Thank you.

I am not sure if you are talking about the Sam's app or the scan and go.
The scan and go app allows you to scan your items while shopping. You can then
check out on your phone. I use it all the time.

The Sam's app is for shopping online and also finding in store
availability of items.

  Hi All,

I ran across the info below that might interest some.

https://www.easeus.com/iphone-data-transfer/transfer-text-messages-from-iphone-to-pc-with-ease.html

If you've changed a new iPhone X, then you don't want to lose any data like
text messages, contacts, photos, etc on the old iPhone. On the other hand,
data loss can take place at anywhere or anytime, so protect the content on
your iPhone like text messages against the data loss by accident is an important
thing, therefore, you need transfer text messages from iPhone to PC. If you
are still seeking a software to send text messages from your iPhone to PC,
  we'll recommend you a
  free iPhone data transfer software
called MobiMover Free, which is a totally free tool and it's open to all
people who are looking for a good to use tool to transfer or backup their iPhone
data with ease. It enables you to
transfer everything from iPhone X to computer
with ease. Follow the steps below to have a try.

How to transfer text messages from iPhone to PC with MobiMover Free

Step 1: Download and install MobiMover Free on your computer with Windows
10/8.1/8/7. As you may know, for MobiMover to access the data on your iPhone
7, it's necessary to install iTunes on your computer, too.

   Free Download for PC
   Free Download for Mac

Step 2: Connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB cable and launch
MobiMover. Once connected, a prompt will pop up on your iPhone screen asking you
whether to trust this computer or not, tap on Trust to continue.

transfer text messages from iphone to pc - step 2

Step 3. Choose Transfer to Computer to access your text message data and
check the box before Message; on the same window choose a file folder to hold
your message on your computer; the transfer will automatically start after
you make the choice;

transfer text messages from iphone to pc - step 3

Step 4: After a while, you can check your messages directly on your PC by
clicking View after the transfer is completed.

transfer text messages from iphone to pc - step 4

Besides the transfer of messages, this tool allows you to
get pictures from iPad to computer
   with a few clicks.

RE: iPhone 6 battery question

2018-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Perhaps the update enabled some settings that people have

the discount offer. I have to send it in because I live in northern Wisconsin
and the nearest Apple Store is about 175 miles away.

I called into Apple (800-MyApple or 800-692-7753). The support associate asked
that I turn off “Find My iPhone” so remote diagnostics could be run and he
determined that the charge cycles had been exhausted and the only resolution
was to have a new battery installed. I suggest you call into Apple and see if
remote diagnostics reveals that your battery is likewise exhausted.

If you are, like me, too far away from an Apple store you will be given the
option of sending your iPhone 6 in to Apple for battery replacement. If you
are fortunate enough to live relatively near an Apple store or certified repair
center you will be able to take your iPhone to the nearest store or repair
center and get the spent battery replaced for the discount price of $29.00.

The caveat to all this is that there be no damage to your iPhone other than
that customarily occurring with normal use and care.

Re: iPhone 6 battery question

2018-04-07 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Chris, I know that this sounds almost unbelievable; however, my 6 was back
in my hand in less than 48 hours from the time I took it into Fed X.
Furthermore, I was supplied with a tracking number, an email when the phone was
received, another when it was out for shipping, and a third when it was out for
delivery. I have never gotten such prompt and thorough service previously.

Perhaps I should mention that I do not know to where my 6 was shipped for
service. I had initially called Apple Care and was emailed an RMA number and
told to take just the phone and that RMA number to Fed X who did the rest
including the boxing of the phone for shipment.

Don, how long did it take before you got your phone back? Looking at possibly
doing the same thing, and was just wondering how long I would have to go withou
a phone.

Re: iPhone 6 battery question

2018-04-07 Thread Richard Turner

I have the iPhone SE and on 11.3 I don't see hardly any battery drain when the
phone is locked, and it is lasting better when I am using it.
I have no idea why some people experience such battery drain, but I doubt it is
just the iOS. Perhaps the update enabled some settings that people have
previously turned off?

Have any of you guys with an iPhone 6 who have installed iOS 11.3 checked

Overdrive how to use it?

2018-04-07 Thread Lelia Struve
Hello everyone, so I didn’t know you could do this but I got a library card
online. So I got the over Drive app, but I can’t seem to save my library. Any
tips on how to use this app would be greatly appreciated. I went to the Apple
vis site and didn’t find too much. I thought someone would have made a podcast
but no luck. Thanks for any and all tips and tricks!

Eye-d, a free orientation app

2018-04-07 Thread Richard Turner
Greetings,

Below is the app store information about this app, followed by my initial
review. Note that the name is spelled E y e hyphen d.

Eye-D, free, by GingerMind Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

App store description:

Eye-D is a movement propelled by the visually impaired community with help of
Team Eye-D. We vouch to empower the VI by providing easy access to cutting edge
technology! Eye-D is here to assit the visually imapired in independent living
by helping them evaluate the world around them with help of their smartphone.
It will work as your companion when you travel, help you explore places, tell
yiu about the objects in front of you and read text whenever you need. This is
what we have built for you: • Where Am I: Be it the busiest suburbs of Mumbai
or the loneliest roads of Siberia, whether you are a common man or zombie,
Eye-D will make sure that you are never lost. Tap on “Where Am I” and let the
magic happen. You get to know your location with a list of landmarks nearby.
Found any of the landmark interesting? Then why wait tap the preferred landmark
and Eye-D guides you to it with directions (currently by opening Apple/ Google
maps for navigation). • Around Me: Stuck in an alien town? Calm down, fire the
Eye-D app and select “Around Me”. Bingo!! You can now find ATM’s, Banks, Bus
stops, Cinemas, Restaurants, Hospitals, Stores and even the Religious places
nearby. Select the desired category and navigate to the preferred place. To
ensure that you never miss out a place we have provided a search radius
controller. So the next time you don’t find a relevant place nearby try
adjusting the search radius to anything in the range of 500 to 5500 meters.
What? Still in that alien town? Come-on find the nearest bus stop and head out.
• See Object: I’m facing the gate… No the lemon tree…. No the bike, Easy pal!!
Use the See Object mode in the Eye-D app to evaluate your surroundings. Click
on this mode, take a picture and Eye-D app will tell you what’s in front. So
the next time you are standing at the window use the See Object mode to check
what’s happening on the other side. In case you missed the description the
first time simply swipe right to hear again. • Read Text: We designed this
feature so that next time your visit a restaurant or want to get a novel for
you friend you won’t have to ask anyone for help. Open read text mode, click a
picture and Eye-D app will read the text in front you. You can swipe right to
hear the text again in case you missed it the first time. • Contact Us: Love
the app? Have a suggestion for the team? Found a bug? Please use this mode to
talk to us. We would love to hear from you. Connect with us on social media:
http://facebook.com/HelloEyeD/ http://twitter.com/HelloEyeD

What's New: Version 1.1.1, 6d ago, This version of Eye-D includes all key
features that will help you explore places, be location aware, evaluate
surroundings and read text. Do not forget to share images with Eye-D Vision!

Please use the contact us feature to share your feedback/ suggestions. We will
look forward to hear from you :)

I was told about this app from someone who seems to think it will replace
BlindSquare.

I don't think so. While it is free and does some similar things and has some
features like Seeing AI, you cannot search for a specific address or business,
you have to pick from their list of Points Of Interest and their list is
somewhat limited. I checked under its store/supermarkets category, and while
it found a lot of ones in the radius allowed, it missed two Safeway stores and
a Fred Meyer. The one Safeway store is much closer than several of the ones it
found.

Its picture descriptions are OK, and I have not tried its text recognition as
yet.

Once you pick a point of interest, it will open Google Maps to get turn-by-turn
directions.

Here is the app store link:

Just thought I'd share what I've found,

RE: is anyone using the sams store app?

2018-04-07 Thread Alan Lemly

ID code which I've saved in my wallet.

the sams page, and the way you do it, might possibly in away be a bit easier,
more of a sure thing everything on your list added the way it should be. Thank

Good luck.

I am not sure if you are talking about the Sam's app or the scan and go. The
scan and go app allows you to scan your items while shopping. You can then
check out on your phone. I use it all the time.

The Sam's app is for shopping online and also finding in store availability of
items.

Bill, as relatively new iphone users, we chose the se phones, we like it for
it's size, it's very smooth operating experience when using the phone and it
will have your standard audio jack. We can definitely recomend the se. We
believe this would be a great choice. However, if you wanted to step out a
little our other recomendation at this time would be the 7 plus. With the 7
plus I believe you get an adaptor so you would have your audio physically
connected to your phone. I've heard the bluetooth has gotten better when it
comes to audio. Anyway the 7 plus is a nice phone, just a little more money.
Good luck, Bill with all this information that you received from richard, mark,
us and anyone else that's answered these questions for you since I'm a bit
behind on messages, of which it will be interesting to read.

I would point out that the iPhone SE is the same size as the 5s and is slightly
newer than the 6s, if that makes any difference for you.

Hello Bill,

You ask questions that some may be reluctant to answer for the simple fact that
each person's circumstances are unique.

Be that as it may, I will offer some suggestions in order to assist you.
Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion.

As for determining how to tell which apps will not function in iOS 11, I will
place the steps and a link to the article below my signature.

1.
To manually backup your device to iCloud, from the Settings menu, select your
name.

2.
Select iCloud.

3.
Select and explore the Backup area.

Now, as for your other questions:

1.
Since money is of great concern to you, and since I'm almost certain you do not
want to have to deal with the issue of swapping out any of your audio
connectors to the Lightening form-factor, I strongly suggest that you purchase
an iPhone 6 S, model. The 6 S model continues to offer the 3.5mm jack,
insuring that any analog audio equipment you have will work as usual. Also,
the price of the 6 S is significantly less than the 7, 8, and 10 series devices.

As far as I know, the only place from which you can purchase a new 6 S series
phone is from Apple, be it online or at an Apple store.

2.
You ask:
"When I get the new phone, will I need to reconnect my bluetooth devices, my
keyboard, a tile I have on my key ring, and my headphones? Will I need to
replace these.?

Answer:
All things being equal, you will probably need to re-pair your Bluetooth
devices. Will you need to replace them? I should think not.

As for your charger, the answer is, No, you will not have to replace it as all
Apple phones, currently being sold, as new, use the Lightening port charging
system.

Bill, I realize that upgrading to a new phone can be very scary and I don't
blame you for hesitating to do so. However, in all things, change is

However, in all things, change is
unavoidable so it's best to do it on your own terms, whenever possible.

I won't kid you, it is quite possible that some of your favorite apps have not

RE: iPhone 6 battery question

2018-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I found during the beta cycle of iOS 11.3 that battery life was also worse for
my iPhone 6S Plus. Towards the end of the beta and now with the public release
it seems a bit better, but I also did a Reset Network Settings which often can
help. I would recommend you go to Settings > General > Reset Network Settings
and do that. Keep in mind that you will have to reconnect to any WiFi networks
after that which includes entering the password. Also, If your phone's name
includes your name, e.g. Jan's iPhone, you have to go into Settings > General >
About and fix that again, doing a reset network settings will change It to
simply "iPhone".

Subject: iPhone 6 battery question

Hello,

Ever since I upgraded to 1103, my battery life is terrible! For example, this
morning I had a battery status of 82 percent. I made 2 short phone calls
during the day, and for the rest of the day, my phone was on stand by, in other
words, the screen was locked. At nine this evening, my battery showed 7
percent. I have gone into mail, notifications, and everything I can think of.
Is anyone else who uses an iPhone 6 having the same issues? Any suggestions is
greatly appreciated.

RE: iPhone 6 battery question

2018-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill,

Only 175 miles away? That’s an afternoon drive for many up here in northern
British Columbia.
I will probably take advantage of the battery replacement for my 6S Plus and my
wife’s 6S. Fortunately we have to go to Calgary at the end of May so I will
make an appointment with one of the two Apple Stores there. Otherwise my
closest Apple Store is in Vancouver which is about 720 miles away from the
little town where we live.
Have any of you guys with an iPhone 6 who have installed iOS 11.3 checked the
Battery Health section to see how much capacity is left? Just curious.

I have an iPhone 6 that will be sent into Apple for a battery replacement for
the discount offer.

The caveat to all this is that there be no damage to your iPhone other than
that customarily occurring with normal use and care.

it's size, it's very smooth operating experience when using the phone and it
will have your standard audio jack.

Bill, Mark covered most points very well.
I would point out that the iPhone SE is the same size as the 5s and is
slightly newer than the 6s, if that makes any difference for you.

Hello Bill,

You ask questions that some may be reluctant to answer for the simple fact
that each person's circumstances are unique.

Be that as it may, I will offer some suggestions in order to assist you.
Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion.

As for determining how to tell which apps will not function in iOS 11, I
will place the steps and a link to the article below my signature.

1.
To manually backup your device to iCloud, from the Settings menu, select
your name.

2.
Select iCloud.

3.
Select and explore the Backup area.

Now, as for your other questions:

1.
Since money is of great concern to you, and since I'm almost certain you do
not want to have to deal with the issue of swapping out any of your audio
connectors to the Lightening form-factor, I strongly suggest that you purchase
an iPhone 6 S, model. The 6 S model continues to offer the 3.5mm jack,
insuring that any analog audio equipment you have will work as usual. Also,
the price of the 6 S is significantly less than the 7, 8, and 10 series
devices.

As far as I know, the only place from which you can purchase a new 6 S
series phone is from Apple, be it online or at an Apple store.

2.
You ask:
"When I get the new phone, will I need to reconnect my bluetooth devices,
my keyboard, a tile I have on my key ring, and my headphones? Will I need to
replace these.?

Answer:
All things being equal, you will probably need to re-pair your Bluetooth
devices. Will you need to replace them? I should think not.

As for your charger, the answer is, No, you will not have to replace it as
all Apple phones, currently being sold, as new, use the Lightening port
charging system.

Bill, I realize that upgrading to a new phone can be very scary and I don't
blame you for hesitating to do so. However, in all things, change is
unavoidable so it's best to do it on your own terms, whenever possible.

I won't kid you, it is quite possible that some of your favorite apps have
not been updated to 64-bit and, thus, will not work in iOS 11. Regardless,
given that your 5 S is falling apart, I’m certain that you will gain more than
you lose by upgrading to a new device with a modern operating system.

Okay, that's about it.

Good luck, Bill, and try to have faith in yourself. You can do this.

Sincerely,

Mark

which apps won't work on iOS 11

How can I find 32-bit apps on my device?

Discovering any old apps that haven't been updated is very simple.

On your iPhone or iPad go to Settings > General > About, and then look for
Applications in the list.

which apps won't work on iOS 11

If you don't have any applications that are 32-bit then tapping
Applications will do nothing. But if you see an arrow on the right side of that
section then tap on it and you'll be presented with a list of all the 32-bit
apps on your device.

Re: iPhone 6 battery question

2018-04-07 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Just to add to Bill’s comments, when I had my iPhone 6 battery replaced, the
shipping was only about $3.50 each way. Apple must have a super deal with Fed
X to get such a low price for shipping.

I have an iPhone 6 that will be sent into Apple for a battery replacement for
the discount offer.

Sounds to me like someone at the apple development team thought it would be a
good idea to buffer all that text. It sounds like a good idea, until you run up

Re: Did anyone have problems reading Jonathan‘s article?

2018-04-07 Thread Anne Robertson
I read books from Kobo, and for some months now, the longer the chapter, the
longer it takes VoiceOver to start reading after the command to read from the
top. It’s as though VoiceOver is digesting all the pages before beginning to
read. For 40 pages, it can take a full minute for VoiceOver to start reading.

While I have the list of commands, with typing on the bluetooth keyboard, we
don't know which key is the toptions key, if
someone could tell me. Thank you.

Re: API changes will break Tweetbot and Twitteriffic alerts and streaming, Twitter not yet sharing new solution ahead of June deadline | 9to5Mac

2018-04-07 Thread Eric Oyen
By definition, all notifications done by twitter are push notifications. I
usually disable that functionality on my end except for DM’s and reply.
Unfortunately, their own client has other issues, such as displaying the
timeline out of sequence. In fact, I have more than 400 ham friends and I
almost never see their conversations because of the numerous promotions and “in
case you. Missed it” from influencers. Also, there is no way to set timeline
sequencing on my end (it’s all controlled on the twitter side for their
client). The web page isn’t much better. I use niteowl here on my Mac and it
does display in proper (time based) sequence. This allows me to follow
conversations (and I can even filter by subject matter, hashtag or even by
user) into separate tabs. I have yet to be able to set up something like this
via their website and their client is a freakin joke.

Btw, as of this writing, nearly 1 million people started leaving twitter today
alone. At this rate, they will have virtually no user base in 1 year. I call
their current actions slow suicide. They will cost many jobs, increase costs to
other interdependent industries and generally screw everything up on their way
down.

And oh yeah, my braille sense U2 has lost one bit of functionality (the twitter
client in it no longer works as of this last week). So much for the $6k that I
spent on an equipment loan over the last 6 years. Oh, and HLMS (the makers of
the braille sense line) won’t drop windows CE for any of the older units. It
would be. Nice to have an android OS on there.

So, we are getting it from 2 sides: twitter fscking us and HLMS no longer
supporting some of their older top rated equipment. Add to that Facebook and
their unethical behavior and I am seriously beginning to think that social
media is becoming a short lived fad.

iPhone 6 battery question

2018-04-07 Thread Jan Stirbens

Jan
