Re: Looking for Inexpensive VoiceOver Compatible Single Earpiece
Craig, I would first discourage you from choosing a single earpiece. Just my experience, but the times you need it, in loud and unfamiliar environments, it is more important than ever to have clear communication the first time. This is true if you are looking up information, receiving directions or talking by phone. I find I can hear the outside sounds just as well and better use my phone with decent stereo. My choice there is the Plantronics 903 for about $40 on Amazon. Just my opinion re: the M-50, it has a permanent ear hook. The M-55 does not have this hook attached, but does come with one you can use when you need. I use it when I am alone and if I drop the earpiece it would be difficult to find. But, if I am with others and they might help find the dropped earpiece, I will not use it (or around the house). Not that the earpiece falling out of my ear is a huge problem; it fits quite nicely and is very small and lightweight. Yes, I do occasionally use the single earpiece. But, my first choice most all the time is the 903. The biggest problem I have had with all bluetooth, and I have had many, many different devices, is the microphone. This is not such an issue talking, but when using Seri or dictation it does matter a lot, and most fail that test. The Plantronics M-50 and M-55 do pass that test with flying colors, though. Just one final point re: the M-55, it comes with some service for weather, news, etc. This is free for one year and around $20 per year after. It is not worth free. It calls a Call Me type service, but the voice is horrible and the service is extremely slow. It is not something you would even know is there if you choose not to use it, even if you want to try it for a bit to see how bad it is. I just feel that the optional ear hook on the M-55 makes it a better fit for my needs. I think they are pretty equal in performance. I think there is a $10 difference, with the M-50 being less. But, if you were buying just one device, I highly suggest you reconsider the stereo models. RE: Ipod touch 5th generation help
Russ, I think you will get the option for the compressed voice after you have done your first Icloud connection. When you have the back of the phone facing you with the Home key closest to you, at the bottom left you will feel a round indent about the size of a pencil eraser. Press in on that and it will pop out. The wrist strap has a keyhole at the end you fit over that pop-out. It never seemed very secure to me and the strap is just plastic, so seemed a little cheesy. I don't believe you are meant to try pressing that pop-out back in with the strap attached. I have never used it beyond just seeing how it works. RE: Plantronics am 55 Bluetooth
Thanks all for the references to the manual. My Google searches sure did not come up with these. I wonder if I get different results using the IPhone than on the PC. Anyway, a brief review of this device. So far as I can tell, it will not control music which I think was how this topic got started to begin with. I have not yet registered for the Vocalist service, so I don't know what all that will enable. But otherwise, all it does is answer or ignore calls, redial the last call or start Siri. I must say that Siri has been excellent so far, and that is usually the downfall of bluetooth. This thing is small and light. It is the size of my little finger. It has a loop on the earpiece that is supposed to fit it in your ear but they did not give different sizes and it feels a bit big for my ear. It also has a hook to secure behind your ear. I would say for the money it is a very good device. If you don't require the remote control to start/stop and skip through music, the size and weight and sound and microphone quality are excellent. Again, thanks for the help. Eric -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Trouble with the NFB NewsLine App
This has been going on since the app was released. I have taken it to NFB twice and been told the issue has not been reported by anyone else. I find that hard to believe; not that they would say something not the truth, but that I should be so lucky/unique. I am never so blessed when lottery numbers are drawn or viruses are handed out... When I am in an article and I choose to have a copy sent to my inbox, from any of the several papers I subscribe to, I either get the message that I do not have a legitimate address on file or the article does not show up in my mailbox. Used to be, maybe half the time, I could tap the back to article buttons and be returned to where I was reading, but now that button does nothing. I do have a legitimate address, the one I am using for this mailing list and for most other mail. NFB does show the same address on file. I know this is a stretch, but if the developers cannot figure it out, or don't believe I am having the trouble, can someone here help. Sure, it only effects one of their many, many users, but it would seem at least interesting enough they would want to look into it. RE: Recording from the iPhone to the iPhone?
Sean sorry that I did not get back to you sooner. I did not have luck trying to record something playing on the IPhone using a recording app on that same IPhone. I tried several applications, but each recording app would suspend what was playing as soon as they began recording. I guess you gathered what I was trying to do. I live in the Eastern time zone and follow the Giants who play most of their games in the Western time. So, it is past my bedtime when they start many games. I could replay the MLB television feed, but the announcers (one of them) is horrible to listen to and is not very descriptive for us nonvisual folks. I don't know why they will not allow us to replay audio games. I have tried recording off my ITouch to either a small Sony voice recorder or Bookport Plus. But, as either of those do fine for recording and playback, I do have to be awake to start the recording process. Then I get the occasional game like last Friday night when the San Francisco feed was horribly slow and kept dropping out throughout the game. It just happened to be one of those nights I could not sleep and could have just listened to the game live, but I really, really hoped to eventually fall asleep. By the way, either the BP or Sony digital will record forever, so I do not have to worry about stopping them. Thanks again for the suggestion, and I'll try any other ideas you might have. This just may be another price of living in the wrong place. Although, I still like to think of myself as just being misplaced for a long, long time -- 22 years now. The best! Each of these sections are about equal in length with a total length of about an inch. The buds are the simple round silicone with an outer phalange that seals sound in and out, although they do not totally isolate outside noise. They are furnished with small, medium and large sizes. The sound driver section is probably the circumference of a large pencil and the outer most section the size of a regular pencil eraser. They are metal construction and feel as though they are solid metal but very light weight. The cable is flat, which is said to help prevent tangling. On the left wire there is a microphone and one button for controls. There is no volume control. The instructions were very few, so I gather you can press and hold to access Siri; press to answer or disconnect calls or play/stop music; press twice to skip forward. That is all I have been able to accomplish thus far. The cable connection is angled. I must say these are nearly the best sounding ear buds I have tried. Certainly for the price. They do not have the base of my Bose MIE2. I have never really bought into the idea that speakers need to be burned in but I am going to pay special attention to see if the quality changes as I use these. Even though they are just the round silicone buds, they do stay in my ear quite well, and that is a huge problem with most all buds I have tried. I purchased from Amazon for $29. The M/Black refers to the color I got. I know there was red, and maybe one other color. I do highly recommend these as a second pair you might use in situations you are afraid to lose or damage your best buds. Let me know if I can be more clear about anything. IPhone 5 Case and Keyboard
I copied this from TechCrunch. I have not had anyone take a look at any pictures for a better description and cannot add anything on how this would perform as acase or keyboard/controller. Ultra-Thin Magnetic Keyboard and Controller Won't Fatten Up Your IPhone 5 Andrew Liszewski The EX Hybrid Controller system isn't the first compact wireless keyboard or gamepad designed to sidle up to the IPhone, but it might be the first that's actually worth using. At just 2 millimeters thick they won't fatten up your phone. And since the separate accessories attach via the magic of magnets, both can be attached in either landscape or portrait orientations. To actually connect either the EX Hybrid controller or keyboard to your IPhone 5 you'll have to get used to your phone wearing a thin case that provides a magnet-friendly backing. But it's not required. Either accessory will still work with your phone when not connected because they're self-powered and rely on a wireless Bluetooth connection. The case just provides a convenient way to marry the two together. And although they look far too thin to house a useful battery, both the keyboard and controller are claimed to have as much as 40 hours of battery life on a single one hour charge. Which is made all the more impressive given the EX Hybrid kit, which includes the case, the keyboard, and the controller, will set you back just $50. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: navigon
I have had Navigon practically since it was first released. However, I do not use it all that often. One of my biggest issues with it is putting in addresses. I often like to see where an address mentioned in the news might be relative to me. Many times, all goes well until I enter the street number, but then I get the argument the number does not exist or some such message. How can I simply put in a street and address and expect it to be found. I mean, I am taking the information right from a newspaper, etc., so you would expect something close to that should be found. How does Navigon even know there is no 1492 Columbus street, and maybe there is not but there is 1527 Columbus. The one other thing I wish I could do with any navigation app would be get directions from one place I will be in the future to another. They all seem to want to take you from your current location or nothing. If anyone knows a way around this, I would appreciate it. Maybe someone familiar with navigation apps who is looking to do a podcast has just gotten an inspiration. It doesn't seem that sort of sharing goes on as much anymore. RE: bluetooth headphones/earbuds
Raul, I have both the Blueant and Plantronics. Unless you only want one ear -- you can hear just as well through one side or you don't want both ears covered, you don't do music, etc. -- I strongly recommend the Plantronics. You asked about bulk or standing out appearance, and I believe the Plantronics would be less noticeable, even though they are on both ears (rather behind both ears, whereas the Blueant definitely hangs out of an ear). They are easy enough to drape around the back of your neck when not in use or hang from your collar. The Blueant can be dropped into a pocket, sure, but I would worry about its durability. Heck, I guess it is easy enough to order both and return the one you do not like. I have tried many, many and still the Plantronics 903 are the best for fit, finish and quality, plus sound. Re: question about the lg hbs730 bluetooth headset.
Generally, you never have to re-pair headphones, unless you pair them with another device. So, if you do not want to use the headphones, turn them off. Since the microphone seems to be the shortcoming of most Bluetooth devices, I will often turn off the headphones if I want to use Siri or dictate. Eric P. S. In an earlier post describing the Plantronics 903 Bluetooth headphones, when I read the post I had already sent, I noticed some glaring errors. Re: bluetooth headphones/earbuds
The business part of the headphone lays against your head and behind your ear. There is a flexible loop that goes over the ear and around front with the bud on the end that rest just inside your ear. I don't think they stick out at all, but for sure they are noticeable, unless you have plenty of hair that will cover them. I would describe them as about the width and nearly the length of a pack of chewing gum, the six pack. They taper to a point as they get poured that arm that holds the your butt. The performance is very decent, too. Especially sound is good for music. They have a bass boost that actually may be too much bass. Microphone quality is a problem, as with almost all Bluetooth. It is better than most working with Siri, but not the best. There is very little lag, too. That can be a particular problem and varies widely. It is most noticeable when entering keystrokes. I am currently returning a jaybird freedom Sprint device because it has such long lag. E Telephone: (614) 321-7457 On Oct 25, 2012, at 7:45 AM, Raul A. Verizon Unlimited Calling and Shared Data
I called Verizon today just to evaluate my plan. They told me I could switch my three lines to a plan with unlimited calling and 6 GB of shared data. Doing so was $188 per month, $10 less than what I have been paying. I hope this wasn't just a case of a rep not knowing what she was doing, but it seems like a very good deal. Also, you know longer will half to pay separate for hotspot, although hotspot data comes out of your total six Gigabytes. Talkatone/Google Voice
I am having one heck of a time with Talkatone. When my phone is asleep, and I get a call, I cannot find an answer button. Sometimes even if I just happen to be in another app when a call comes in, I cannot find the answer button. Can anyone offer tips for using Talkatone with a Google voice number. It Appears as Though My Phone is Brick'd!
I let the over-the-air update begin and it got to the 96% mark. I let it stay there for about 30 minutes before I stopped the update. When I started again, it was at 75% and counted up from there. It reached 96% again and sat for quite some time, but I noticed it now said installation was in progress. About 30 minutes since then, there has been nothing; no speech, no sounds, cannot activate speech with the triple home click, cannot turn the phone off or on; dead. I began just after 1:00 PM Eastern. I think I am dead until someone can eye it in a few hours. Damn! Never had a problem updating before, although there have not been so many opportunities. RE: It Appears as Though My Phone is Brick'd!
Well, in my case, several minutes has been 75. If people could define several minutes, a little while, just a few, it might be more helpful for those of us who think we are stuck. I am now two hours into things and nothing happens no matter what I try. I know the phone is getting power because it is warm when attached to the wall cord. Otherwise, nothing. Not with headphones, nothing when attached to the PC, tried triple clicking home button, etc. So, I guess I have waited just a little while. This was on sale for $.99 Tuesday. I do not know for how long or what the regular price will be. It is billed as a simpler to use Reminder app. It does seem to be that. I have always thought the native Reminder made you jump through a few hoops to set a simple location or time based reminder. This seems easier. NBC Olympics Live Extra App Not Accessible
I downloaded this app over the weekend, but the only button VO speaks is click here, which leads you to a page for purchasing merchandise. I am assured there are other buttons on the screen for schedules, etc. I have not written to developers before, so I am not even sure what to say, other than your app is not accessible to VoiceOver, but it probably could be. Has anyone been in touch with NBC or the developer of the app and heard anything about changes before the games begin next week. Are therrre options for finding events other than the television? This is supposed to make every minute of every event available. The only condition was you have to provide your cable company. I thought I would try it in advance to be sure my cable company is recognized before the games begin, but can't even get that far, but you cannot get that far without VoiceOver, either. Thanks for any pointers! Eric Telephone: (614)522-9725 Skype: sseric57 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Taxi Magic - Does it Work?
I had this recommended to me by a VoiceOver user. He was from LA, so maybe mileage varies by location. I have downloaded the app and signed up. I have three taxi services listed, but they all just call the company dispatchers and do not allow me to book reservations, as I understand you can, which is the great part of the service. Maybe it is because that part of the service is not available here yet. So, I went to the web site on my 4S. It comes up and I see options for scheduling rides, but the screen then jumps all over the place, such that you cannot follow a simple paragraph. I have not experienced this in Safari before. The jumping is so bad that I cannot even find where to schedule service, let alone then trying to fill in fields for that service. Any ideas on this app specifically or ways to make the screen just be still here or other times? This looks like it could be a great app, if it will do more than simply let me call the cab company; that is what the phone is for, if that was all I wanted. Many thanks for any ideas. RE: Taxi Magic - Does it Work?
Wayne, thank you for that response! So, your mileage may vary does apply here... Do you know if we can use the payment portion of the app, though. Can we make payment via the IPhone. Also, maybe you know this from other users, but if we could book via the phone, are you shown the fair so you know what your ride will cost before you begin? I have written to the developers in the meantime, so I guess they will say the same thing you did -- that my city is just not fully implemented. I will pass along any additional information they may provide. A limited number of U.S. cities are supported by the app. So if you are only given the option to call the cab company, instead of go through the setup screens to book a ride on your phone, then your city is not supported yet for in-app booking. I'm in the same boat since Austin is not supported yet either. I wish it were though since it would be a great way of getting my daily cab verses the old fashioned way through Yellow Cab. Oh well. RE: Regarding complaint/accusation of treating the list as buy/sell/trade.
Amy, I am certainly no moderator, thankfully, but if I was you certainly would be welcome on my list. As you said, your announcements have been low key and mainly in response to questions, and you do contribute otherwise. The person who complained seems to have lots of complaints. Lets hope he mostly channels his gripes through moderators and we only see spill-over, but I doubt it. The list truly seems to be dissolving into training wheels for those too lazy or too lonely so we get the very simple how do I and the very sad how can I harsh someone's mellow. Please do keep on keeping on. I appreciate the great products and thoughtful information you provide. I have purposefully made it a point *not* to clutter the list with traffic that involves marketing/sales of any kind. I am posting from my personal account, yes, at times making announcements for my company, but I am not here to market products; which is why I also participate on the list in ways that have absolutely nothing to do with the products that we sell. Dropvox showing in folder
I just started using this last week. I have had Dropbox on my phone for a long time and use it with an editor program Elements. My Dropbox folder has an Elements folder, and I can access files and folders either by opening Elements or opening Dropbox and then the Elements folder. When I ask Dropvox to save files in the Elements folder, in a subfolder I named Recordings, I can only access those saved files by going through Dropbox, Elements and then Recordings. If I just open Elements and then the Recordings folder, no files show up in there. Any suggestions will be most appreciated. I would like to eliminate the extra steps to get to my saved recordings. Tom, after you have installed it, you need to go to your settings and find bluetooth, the app, not bluetooth you find in general. Tap on it there and set the quick on/off to on. Anyhow, I just downloaded the app so it is still there at this point and the cost is 99 Cents. Just do a search in the app store for Bluetooth and it should be the first result, the app is called BluetoothC by CXI Gaming. Once you downloaded the app, go into Settings and find the app in your app section after all the system stuff, there is just one setting you want to enable and it is called Quick Mode. If you don't do this, the app will launch and you still have to tap to turn Bluetooth on or off and then exit the app, but with Quick Mode turned on, all you have to do is double tapp the app to toggle bluetooth on or off, you will hear a tone and the app returns you to the home screen. I just downloaded it and it works perfectly and instantly. Just as a warning, the Today in iOS listener who called this in to the Podcast said he had another Bluetooth app and not only did Apple pull it from the App Store, but when he updated to iOS 5.1.1 the app mysteriously vanished from his iPhone and presumably is now burried in Apple's unauthorized app graveyard. So, your 99 Cents may be wasted when iOS 6 comes out, but also as a heads up on the same episode it was mentioned that in the iOS 6 Beta Bluetooth has been taken out of General and moved right up into the main Settings where Airplane Mode and WiFi are, so while apparently in iOS 6 there once again will be no super quick shortcut or a way to turn bluetooth on or off from the status bar or with SIRI, at least it is only 2 taps away. Also, for those who are interested in news about iOS 6, there is a bit of that in almost every episode of Today in iOS as apparently not all developers care too much about the Non Disclosure Agreement they signed and send information about new features in to Rob who does the Podcast. OAnd one last bit of iPhone trivia, apparently the iPhone will be 5 years old on June 29, this is the date when the first iPhone was released in 2007... it's come a long way, let's see what it will be in 2017 and whether there will be other smartphone options that are equally accessible for us blind/visually impaired users! Voicepic for labeling pictures for email or Facebook
I have only used this once, but so far it seems accessible. However, after I shot a picture and sent it via Facebook, I do not know that the picture was saved on my phone. I was hoping I could use it just to label pictures I took. Note voicepic is written as one word. I apologize for not having the direct link to the App Store, where it is free. Cue - an app for organizing your life
I am wondering if anyone has tried this app. It is supposed to aggregate information from your calendar, contacts, mail, Facebook, reminders, etc. I was able to set it up and attach accounts, but when I finish set up and went to use it, I see to unlabeled buttons and then nothing. After those buttons, as I flip across the screen, I hear the iPhone sound, but get no speech feedback. It sounds like a good idea and, since they were able to make set up accessible, perhaps they can make the rest of the app fully accessible, too. However, I have not had anyone look at the app so I do not know what kind of layout is on the screen. Any feedback will be appreciated. Maybe someone else would like to try the app and contact developers. Eric Telephone: (614)522-9725 Skype: sseric57 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: How to use the iphone in an emergency
If Siri works, he could do it. My experience since Siri came out is that when I need it most it works least. It seems fine when I am at home and on Wi-Fi, but when I am away and in a noisy environment or cannot type efficiently, then it does not work. I understand it is still Beta, and that has been apples claim so far, but they are spending millions of dollars to get people to use something that does not work as advertised. Re: Recommendations wanted for keyboard case for iPhone 4S
I second the recommendation for the box wave keyboard buddy. It is basically a slider with two rails that snap on Yeeither side of your iPhone and the keyboard slides out from under the iPhone it does basically double the thickness of the iPhone but it really doesn't add that much weight. There is a cut out for the camera lens and all ports and buttons. It charges by mini USB and holds a charge for very long time. Does have an off switch. As I recall there were debits on F and J and I can't really remember the rest of the keyboard configuration but it was a very nice design device It can be a bit of a challenge to take it off the phone because it clamps on pretty tight. But it is doable and gets easier with each time. You may want to remove it in times when you know youwill not need a keyboard and do not want the added bulk. The alternative too that is a portable keyboard that you will have to remember to stow somewhere in case you need it. RE: Skype -- Two Problems
Sieghard, thank you so much for this tip. I often forget that a complete reinstall can fix many problems, and it did this time. This fix seems to work for problems created when updating breaks something. I have only given it one test, but I was able to enter 30 or so digits after the call was connected and they all took. Also, I found the end call button can be reached with a 4-finger tap on the bottom half of the screen. I do not remember this being the case before, but I generally just flicked to find it. I see they have eliminated the History tab. Overall, I am pleased with the update. After so many complaints about broken features, I have not updated since last fall or so. Re: Editing text in iPhone
Jenny, you first must be in and edit field. You will want to choose character word or line. Then place your index and middle fingers in the middle of the screen. To select a character, word or line, spread your fingers slowly apart. If you are selecting by line, you will hear all of the line spoken or maybe just the last few words. You will lift your fingers, put them together and put them back on the screen and spread them apart again to select more lines. Some people have found other maneuvers to accomplish this, such as putting both for fingers on the screen and pulling them apart. I have not had luck with that method. If you find that you have selected a line too many, you can simply squeeze your fingers back together to unselect that character, word or line. Once you think you have selected all necessary, then use the rotor to get to edit and flip your finger up or down to select copy or cut, etc. Hope this helps some. It does take some practice and some frustration, too. Eric Telephone: (614)522-9725 Skype: sseric57 On Jun 18, 2012, at 2:46 PM, Tara Prakash taraprak...@gmail.com wrote: Okay thanks. Now, in short, if you swipe down, you are moving forward. If you swipe up, you are moving backward. Your cursor is landing between the letters. So, if you have the first 7 letters of the alphabet, abcdefg, and you swipe down until you hear c, that means your cursor is between c and d. If you double-tap delete, you will delete the letter c because you are moving forward and c is the last letter you heard. Now, again, taking abcdefg and let's say you are swiping up and the last letter you heard was b, that means your cursor is between a and b. This is because you are moving backwards and the last letter you heard was b, so this time if you press delete, the letter a will be deleted. Skype -- Two Problems
I have the latest version of Skype on a 4S. I am using credits to make local calls. The first issue was present with the older version of Skype. When connected in a call and entering multiple digits to navigate menus, after about a dozen entries nothing is accepted. I still hear the tone, but the entry does not work. My second issue is with the latest Skype. I thought this had been corrected and is why I finally updated versions. The end call button does not work. I was finally able to end a call by disabling VoiceOver and tapping until I got the right button. Are there fixes to either of these problems? All thanks for suggestions. Re: Editing text in iPhone
If you are moving forward in the text, or flipping down, when you hit delete it will delete the character last spoken. If you are moving backward through the text, or flipping up, it will delete the text to the left of the character last spoken. So, sometimes the character that VO last spoke gets deleted and at other times the character which was immediately before the character that VO last spoke gets deleted. So, how exactly does this work? Let's say I've made a spelling mistake and have written my name as R A H O U L instead of R A H U L. So, where should I press the delete button to delete the O? Raul, thank you for the suggestion. I have downloaded the app and signed up, but now what? Can you point me to a tutorial or demo. Here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Radio-Receiver-iPhone-iPod/dp/B003ERT46... The good news is that the FM reception and sound quality is fantastic! The bad news is that the app is not accessible with voice over at all, and I do not see anyway it could ever be. The device plugs into the bottom of the iPhone which totally disables speech. The headset plugs into the bottom of this device. Under my video magnifier I was able to set up presets and I can run the app via memory with voice over off. The stations are listed in numerical order on the favorites page. The main downside is the Tuner button is in the center of the screen, about 1 inch from the top of the phone, and if you hit this accidentally, you will need to find the done button on the bottom left to return to the favorites page. With no voice over it would be difficult for a totally blind user to avoid doing this. If you are like me and listen to one radio station all the time then you are in luck, the app retains the last station listened to, so all you would have to do is double tap on the icon and the iFm will start. And with voice over on, there is no danger of accidentally hitting the tuner button. IMHO definitely worth the 20 bucks! Re: Extending battery life on the 4s
Seighar mentioned a very important issue that I forgot to bring up. If you are going out for any length of time, say more than a couple of hours, turn your Wi-Fi off. It can use a lot of energy searching for nonexistent or unwanted Wi-Fi. Telephone: (614)633-0376 Skype: sseric57 On May 23, 2012, at 10:59 AM, Sieghard siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hello Kim and others, The article you referred to points out the major issues, I found that changing email from Push to even 15 minutes makes a difference. WiFi also does take a fair amount of battery, I typically keep it on though unless I am out and about most of the day. Most people who criticise the iPhone's battery performance don't take into account that most people also use their iPhone to do way more stuff and to me the battery does OK if I can get through the day doing what I need to do. I believe investing in an external battery case or battery pack is the way to go here. I prefer just an external battery since I have a very nice leather case and prefer my iPhone to be as slim as possible and any battery case adds a bit of bulk. The New Trend IMP1000 which somebody just asked about yesterday has good reviews and a wopping 11,000 MA with 41 WH and that allows you to charge your phone up to 6 times before having to recharge the battery. It's of course a bit on the larger side with about 4 inches by 4 inches by a bit over an inch thick (think portable external hard drive or about as wide and long as your iPhone is long and 3 times as thick). Anyhow, there are tons of options out there ranging from as small as a good sized USB stick to my Brunton Impel which weighs 2 pounds, is a bit larger than an old VHS tape, but I can fully charge my laptop on it and my iPhone and it's still not dead with 145 WH (Watt Hours) it has 3.5 times the capacity of the New Trend IMP1000 and you could charge a new iPad close to 3 times. Best to go to a store and ask them to show you a few options and pick one that meets your budget and that you like. RE: Facebook advice
John, I have tried about five different apps, and still the Face Book app works as well as any or maybe a bit better, depending on your needs. I am not sure what it cannot do, as I am a pretty low-level user, only posting status updates and sometimes where I am, and liking or commenting on others' posts. I believe I can send pictures, but I am not sure if I can tag others. It has taken forever to get where I can understand how it works, sort of, but I think I am close now. It is a matter of classifying people into lists and then checking each list for updates, as it doesn't seem the News Feed is most reliable posting everything or posting in proper order. That is where I may just not be understanding the point of that particular feature. I still struggle with figuring out what kind of notification from whom, but I eventually do find them. Re: accessibility of new iPhone compatible meter
Isn't it funny how the ultimate threat for us to control our blood sugar is you will go blind and the biggest fund raising card they hold out is to prevent blindness, and yet hardly any of them have accessible material. The ADA has virtually none of their handouts, etc. in large print braille or other alternate media. You will find an option to tag it with pre-breakfast, post-breakfast, etc. It comes up as a picker item. So, it looks pretty accessible out of the box. The keypad says a lot of unnecessary stuff, but it is manageable. I work with a lot of people with diabetes. I called the company and was told the app is not compatible with VoiceOver, but they are looking into it. I pointed out how much I could do with the app now, and it would take very little tweaking for them to make it completely accessible. The person I talked with took my information and said he would forward it on to management etc. They do not provide any way to contact that department. Perhaps if enough people call them expressing an interest in making it more accessible with VoiceOver, they will take the time to do the adjustments needed. Toll Free: 800-633-1610. There is also an app that records the blood sugar readings from the meter. Has anyone experimented with the app or tried the meter? I am wondering if Voiceover would announce the prompts given by the meter. Someone from another list said that the app is almost accessible. Labels are above the buttons, so one isn't always sure what button applies to what label. Double tapping didn't do anything. I plan to take a look at the app myself since it can be used for logging blood sugars, insulin, etc. Maybe if enough people try the app and write to the company about accessibility, it will be even more useful. There has been some discussion on the list about diabetes record keeping apps. I didn't like any of the ones I tried, so I used an app called Tap Forms Lt which allows one to create databases. The app is totally accessible and allows one to create and customize a form as well as to use built in forms. Having a meter that would communicate with an accessible app would save some of the work in keeping track of things. How to Calibrate Your Home Button | Snapguide
by Roberto Garza Sometimes when you press the home button on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch there can be a delay or even take a couple of tries before it responds. In this tutorial you will see how to fix this. Step 1 Open a stock application like the Calendar, Weather, or Youtube Step 2 With one of these apps opened, hold down the power button until the 'slide to power off' control appears. Step 3 As soon as you see it, press the home button and keep it pressed until the red slider disappears and the app is forced quit to the home menu. Step 4 That's it! Now you should have a much more responsive home button. http://snapguide.com/guides/calibrate-your-home-button/ I do not subscribe to this site, so not sure of their information. VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off
I would like to point out there is no mention in Settings of a Premium voice. You either have Compact voice on or off. It is misleading to talk about voices in any other way, even if in practical terms that is the meaning. Here is where I am confused. When I look at my settings, I see Use Compact Voice On. Does that mean I am currently using the non-Compact voice or that the Compact voice is on. If I tap that button and it changes to Use Compact Voice Off, is the compact voice off and I am using the premium voice or will it begin using the premium, Compact voice when I tap that button and it changes to Use Compact Voice On. There is probably some engineer's logic to these toggles, but I do not see them as consistent throughout settings. Sometimes it means this is the state you are in, but other times it means this is what you will change to. I am simple, so any simple explanation will be appreciated. To my ear, I am using the original VoiceOver voice when my setting is Use Compact Voice On. I have been told this is the compact voice and not the high-quality, premium voice. But, if I switch to that other one, it sounds gravelly and distorted. I may not have perfect pitch or all the qualities of some master musicians' ears, but I do have good hearing um, when I listen, so says my wife). :) Away with me... RE: VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off
Neil, thanks a ton for that explanation. I guess I will have to try installing the higher quality voice again. When it was first released, I did do as you described and I think I got the new voice, but as I said, it sure does not sound better or high quality to my ear. It sounds very rough. You have tweaked my curiosity, though, and I will set use compact voice off and leave the phone plugged in overnight to see what happens. People have praised the higher quality, which I never did hear, and I figured our interpretations of quality just had to be way different. Thanks again! The higher quality or premium voice is in use when the setting is off, i.e. not compact. So not compacting your voice, equals better higher quality voice. note, that when you turn compact voice off, you may not notice a difference for a good few hours whilst the none compact voice is downloaded. it is better to have it off.
