Re: Looking for Inexpensive VoiceOver Compatible Single Earpiece

2013-12-03 Thread Eric SS
Craig, I would first discourage you from choosing a single earpiece.
Just my experience, but the times you need it, in loud and unfamiliar
environments, it is more important than ever to have clear
communication the first time. This is true if you are looking up
information, receiving directions or talking by phone. I find I can
hear the outside sounds just as well and better use my phone with
decent stereo. My choice there is the Plantronics 903 for about $40 on
Amazon.

Just my opinion re: the M-50, it has a permanent ear hook. The M-55
does not have this hook attached, but does come with one you can use
when you need. I use it when I am alone and if I drop the earpiece it
would be difficult to find. But, if I am with others and they might
help find the dropped earpiece, I will not use it (or around the
house). Not that the earpiece falling out of my ear is a huge problem;
it fits quite nicely and is very small and lightweight.

Yes, I do occasionally use the single earpiece. But, my first choice
most all the time is the 903.

The biggest problem I have had with all bluetooth, and I have had
many, many different devices, is the microphone. This is not such an
issue talking, but when using Seri or dictation it does matter a lot,
and most fail that test. The Plantronics M-50 and M-55 do pass that
test with flying colors, though.

Just one final point re: the M-55, it comes with some service for
weather, news, etc. This is free for one year and around $20 per year
after. It is not worth free. It calls a Call Me type service, but
the voice is horrible and the service is extremely slow. It is not
something you would even know is there if you choose not to use it,
even if you want to try it for a bit to see how bad it is.

I just feel that the optional ear hook on the M-55 makes it a better
fit for my needs. I think they are pretty equal in performance. I
think there is a $10 difference, with the M-50 being less. But, if you
were buying just one device, I highly suggest you reconsider the
stereo models. If you want any further description, feel free to give
me a shout: sseri...@gmail.com

 Hello, everyone.

I am looking for an inexpensive single-ear/mono Bluetooth earpiece that
 will
allow me to manage phone calls and pause and play Audible and BARD books.
SIRI compatibility is not necessary. I'm looking at the Plantronics M50

M155. Are there any probloems with these devices? Are there other mono
 units I should be considering?

 Thank you for all help.

RE: Ipod touch 5th generation help

2013-05-24 Thread Eric SS
Russ, I think you will get the option for the compressed voice after you
have done your first Icloud connection.

When you have the back of the phone facing you with the Home key closest to
you, at the bottom left you will feel a round indent about the size of a
pencil eraser. Press in on that and it will pop out. The wrist strap has a
keyhole at the end you fit over that pop-out. It never seemed very secure to
me and the strap is just plastic, so seemed a little cheesy. I don't believe
you are meant to try pressing that pop-out back in with the strap attached.
I have never used it beyond just seeing how it works.

RE: Plantronics am 55 Bluetooth

2013-05-23 Thread Eric SS
Thanks all for the references to the manual. My Google searches sure did not
come up with these. I wonder if I get different results using the IPhone
than on the PC.

Anyway, a brief review of this device. So far as I can tell, it will not
control music which I think was how this topic got started to begin with. I
have not yet registered for the Vocalist service, so I don't know what all
that will enable. But otherwise, all it does is answer or ignore calls,
redial the last call or start Siri. I must say that Siri has been excellent
so far, and that is usually the downfall of bluetooth.

This thing is small and light. It is the size of my little finger. It has a
loop on the earpiece that is supposed to fit it in your ear but they did not
give different sizes and it feels a bit big for my ear. It also has a hook
to secure behind your ear.

I would say for the money it is a very good device. If you don't require the
remote control to start/stop and skip through music, the size and weight and
sound and microphone quality are excellent.

Again, thanks for the help.

Trouble with the NFB NewsLine App

2013-05-19 Thread Eric SS
This has been going on since the app was released. I have taken it to NFB
twice and been told the issue has not been reported by anyone else. I find
that hard to believe; not that they would say something not the truth, but
that I should be so lucky/unique. I am never so blessed when lottery numbers
are drawn or viruses are handed out...

When I am in an article and I choose to have a copy sent to my inbox, from
any of the several papers I subscribe to, I either get the message that I do
not have a legitimate address on file or the article does not show up in my
mailbox. Used to be, maybe half the time, I could tap the back to article
buttons and be returned to where I was reading, but now that button does
nothing.

I do have a legitimate address, the one I am using for this mailing list and
for most other mail. NFB does show the same address on file.

I know this is a stretch, but if the developers cannot figure it out, or
don't believe I am having the trouble, can someone here help. Sure, it only
effects one of their many, many users, but it would seem at least
interesting enough they would want to look into it.

Thanks for any suggestions; well, except the one that I am the only one ever
to have had this problem... SMILE

Stretching the topic a bit, what is your feeling re: getting a mini now or

if the changes are only in the screen and possibly upgrading the processor,
would you think it worth waiting or is the current device sufficient for

RE: Recording from the iPhone to the iPhone?

2013-05-13 Thread Eric SS
Sean sorry that I did not get back to you sooner.

I did not have luck trying to record something playing on the IPhone using a
recording app on that same IPhone. I tried several applications, but each
recording app would suspend what was playing as soon as they began
recording.

I guess you gathered what I was trying to do. I live in the Eastern time
zone and follow the Giants who play most of their games in the Western time.
So, it is past my bedtime when they start many games. I could replay the MLB
television feed, but the announcers (one of them) is horrible to listen to
and is not very descriptive for us nonvisual folks. I don't know why they
will not allow us to replay audio games.

I have tried recording off my ITouch to either a small Sony voice recorder
or Bookport Plus. But, as either of those do fine for recording and
playback, I do have to be awake to start the recording process. Then I get
the occasional game like last Friday night when the San Francisco feed was
horribly slow and kept dropping out throughout the game. It just happened to
be one of those nights I could not sleep and could have just listened to the
game live, but I really, really hoped to eventually fall asleep. By the way,
either the BP or Sony digital will record forever, so I do not have to worry
about stopping them.

Thanks again for the suggestion, and I'll try any other ideas you might
have. This just may be another price of living in the wrong place. Although,
I still like to think of myself as just being misplaced for a long, long
time -- 22 years now.

The best!

Eric

Greetings to the list.

I have just finished listening to Garth's fine iblindtech.com podcast
on the Earl newspaper reading app. I am about to download the app and
give it a try. The idea of reading newspapers on an iPhone prompts a
question: Suppose you have several hours to spend reading newspapers
and several papers to read. Which app will allow you to read the
greatest number of articles in the shortest amount of time? I am
excited by the possibility of being able to emulate the process a
sighted person goes through when she or he reads a paper, and an app
such as Earl might well narrow the gap between the amount of
information a blind person can absorb in a given period compared with
the amount a sighted person might absorb during that same period.

Thank you for your thoughts.

RE: Reading Newspapers Efficiently Using iPhone Apps

Craig, I highly recommend NFB NewsLine. You can access papers and magazines
either via their excellent app, Read to Go or Safari. I think for variety

Subject: Reading Newspapers Efficiently Using iPhone Apps

Greetings to the list.

I have just finished listening to Garth's fine iblindtech.com podcast on the
Earl newspaper reading app. I am about to download the app and give it a
try. The idea of reading newspapers on an iPhone prompts a
question: Suppose you have several hours to spend reading newspapers and
several papers to read. Which app will allow you to read the greatest
number of articles in the shortest amount of time? I am excited by the
possibility of being able to emulate the process a sighted person goes
through when she or he reads a paper, and an app such as Earl might well
narrow the gap between the amount of information a blind person can absorb
in a given period compared with the amount a sighted person might absorb
during that same period.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Craig

Ear buds Review

2013-04-12 Thread Eric SS
NuForce NE-600 M/Black

Note the spelling is N U Force not N E W

These are buds in the true sense. They are probably the smallest buds I have
seen. If you think of them as having three parts, the stem for the bud that
fits into the ear canal, a middle portion with the speakers and an outer
piece. Each of these sections are about equal in length with a total length
of about an inch. The buds are the simple round silicone with an outer
phalange that seals sound in and out, although they do not totally isolate
outside noise. They are furnished with small, medium and large sizes. The
sound driver section is probably the circumference of a large pencil and the
outer most section the size of a regular pencil eraser. They are metal
construction and feel as though they are solid metal but very light weight.

The cable is flat, which is said to help prevent tangling. On the left wire
there is a microphone and one button for controls. There is no volume
control. The instructions were very few, so I gather you can press and hold
to access Siri; press to answer or disconnect calls or play/stop music;
press twice to skip forward. That is all I have been able to accomplish thus
far. The cable connection is angled.

I must say these are nearly the best sounding ear buds I have tried.
Certainly for the price. They do not have the base of my Bose MIE2. I have
never really bought into the idea that speakers need to be burned in but I
am going to pay special attention to see if the quality changes as I use
these. Even though they are just the round silicone buds, they do stay in my
ear quite well, and that is a huge problem with most all buds I have tried.

I purchased from Amazon for $29. The M/Black refers to the color I got. I
know there was red, and maybe one other color. I do highly recommend these
as a second pair you might use in situations you are afraid to lose or
damage your best buds.

Let me know if I can be more clear about anything.

My Plantronics 903 Bluetooth ear buds broke, and I am not sure they can be
repaired. So, I am in the market for something new.

I require stereo earbuds with the smallest possible footprint and wait.
Hopefully, they have good music sound, not necessarily excellent
stereophonic quality, but microphones seem to be the downfall of most
Bluetooth devices. I have found the best test of microphone ability is using
Siri.

I set my price limit at about $150, but less is always better!

If anyone has specific suggestions, they will be most appreciated.

IPhone 5 Case and Keyboard

2013-02-06 Thread Eric SS
I copied this from TechCrunch. I have not had anyone take a look at any
pictures for a better description and cannot add anything on how this would
perform as acase or keyboard/controller.

Ultra-Thin Magnetic Keyboard and Controller Won't Fatten Up Your IPhone 5
 Andrew Liszewski
The EX Hybrid Controller system isn't the first compact wireless keyboard
or gamepad designed to sidle up to the IPhone, but it might be the first
that's actually worth using. At just 2 millimeters thick they won't fatten
up your phone. And since the separate accessories attach via the magic of
magnets, both can be attached in either landscape or portrait orientations.

To actually connect either the EX Hybrid controller or keyboard to your
IPhone 5 you'll have to get used to your phone wearing a thin case that
provides a magnet-friendly backing. But it's not required. Either accessory
will still work with your phone when not connected because they're
self-powered and rely on a wireless Bluetooth connection. The case just
provides a convenient way to marry the two together.

And although they look far too thin to house a useful battery, both the
keyboard and controller are claimed to have as much as 40 hours of battery
life on a single one hour charge. Which is made all the more impressive
given the EX Hybrid kit, which includes the case, the keyboard, and the
controller, will set you back just $50.

RE: navigon

2012-11-11 Thread Eric SS
I have had Navigon practically since it was first released. However, I do
not use it all that often.

One of my biggest issues with it is putting in addresses. I often like to
see where an address mentioned in the news might be relative to me. Many
times, all goes well until I enter the street number, but then I get the
argument the number does not exist or some such message. How can I simply
put in a street and address and expect it to be found. I mean, I am taking
the information right from a newspaper, etc., so you would expect something
close to that should be found. How does Navigon even know there is no 1492
Columbus street, and maybe there is not but there is 1527 Columbus.

The one other thing I wish I could do with any navigation app would be get
directions from one place I will be in the future to another. They all seem
to want to take you from your current location or nothing. If anyone knows a
way around this, I would appreciate it. Maybe someone familiar with
navigation apps who is looking to do a podcast has just gotten an
inspiration. It doesn't seem that sort of sharing goes on as much anymore.

RE: bluetooth headphones/earbuds

2012-10-27 Thread Eric SS
Raul, I have both the Blueant and Plantronics.

Unless you only want one ear -- you can hear just as well through one side
or you don't want both ears covered, you don't do music, etc. -- I strongly
recommend the Plantronics. You asked about bulk or standing out appearance,
and I believe the Plantronics would be less noticeable, even though they are
on both ears (rather behind both ears, whereas the Blueant definitely hangs
out of an ear). They are easy enough to drape around the back of your neck
when not in use or hang from your collar. The Blueant can be dropped into a
pocket, sure, but I would worry about its durability.

Heck, I guess it is easy enough to order both and return the one you do not
like. I have tried many, many and still the Plantronics 903 are the best for
fit, finish and quality, plus sound.

Re: question about the lg hbs730 bluetooth headset.

2012-10-26 Thread Eric SS
Generally, you never have to re-pair headphones, unless you pair them with
another device. So, if you do not want to use the headphones, turn them off.
Since the microphone seems to be the shortcoming of most Bluetooth devices, I
will often turn off the headphones if I want to use Siri or dictate.

Eric

P. S. In an earlier post describing the Plantronics 903 Bluetooth headphones,
when I read the post I had already sent, I noticed some glaring errors. Be
assured I was not talking about the headphones and one's butt. It was a case of
dictation and not clearly hearing what was said when I proof read the post.

seems to keep the buds in the magnetic holders). Other than that the
rest of ours seem to work well. I've never had people tell me they
can't hear me and I can usually hear them.

Now, I will say the bluetooth picks up noise around the user -- for
example if my fiance is on the bus, I can here others like they are
right on top of him! He's expressed the same about those around me.

LIke you I'd really want to order the 730's but am a bit leary about
 the reviews.

If you are trying to go to a date to set an appointment, first set to all day.
Then you have sliders to choose the month day and year.

I second the recommendation for the Plantronics 903. They are in ear, but not
into the ear canal. This allows you to hear external sound.

Re: bluetooth headphones/earbuds

2012-10-25 Thread Eric SS
The business part of the headphone lays against your head and behind your ear.
There is a flexible loop that goes over the ear and around front with the bud
on the end that rest just inside your ear. I don't think they stick out at all,
but for sure they are noticeable, unless you have plenty of hair that will
cover them. I would describe them as about the width and nearly the length of a
pack of chewing gum, the six pack. They taper to a point as they get poured
that arm that holds the your butt.

The performance is very decent, too. Especially sound is good for music. They
have a bass boost that actually may be too much bass. Microphone quality is a
problem, as with almost all Bluetooth. It is better than most working with
Siri, but not the best. There is very little lag, too. That can be a particular
problem and varies widely. It is most noticeable when entering keystrokes. I am
currently returning a jaybird freedom Sprint device because it has such long
lag.

Verizon Unlimited Calling and Shared Data

2012-10-25 Thread Eric SS
I called Verizon today just to evaluate my plan. They told me I could switch my
three lines to a plan with unlimited calling and 6 GB of shared data. Doing so
was $188 per month, $10 less than what I have been paying.

I hope this wasn't just a case of a rep not knowing what she was doing, but it
seems like a very good deal. Also, you know longer will half to pay separate
for hotspot, although hotspot data comes out of your total six Gigabytes.

It Appears as Though My Phone is Brick'd!

2012-09-19 Thread Eric SS
I let the over-the-air update begin and it got to the 96% mark. I let it
stay there for about 30 minutes before I stopped the update. When I started
again, it was at 75% and counted up from there. It reached 96% again and sat
for quite some time, but I noticed it now said installation was in progress.
About 30 minutes since then, there has been nothing; no speech, no sounds,
cannot activate speech with the triple home click, cannot turn the phone off
or on; dead.

I began just after 1:00 PM Eastern. I think I am dead until someone can eye
it in a few hours.

Damn! Never had a problem updating before, although there have not been so
many opportunities. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

RE: It Appears as Though My Phone is Brick'd!

2012-09-19 Thread Eric SS
Well, in my case, several minutes has been 75.

If people could define several minutes, a little while, just a few, it
might be more helpful for those of us who think we are stuck.

I am now two hours into things and nothing happens no matter what I try. I
know the phone is getting power because it is warm when attached to the wall
cord. Otherwise, nothing. Not with headphones, nothing when attached to the
PC, tried triple clicking home button, etc.

So, I guess I have waited just a little while.

If there are any suggestions, it will be most appreciated -- short of take
it to the Apple store...

Subject: Small braille keyboard/displays for iPhone

 Hi all,

I’m looking at buying an iphone 5 as well as a braille keyboard/display.
I need the keyboard/display to be in one single unit, to connect using
bluetooth, to also work with my iPad 2, and to be very small/portable.
I’ve been looking at the BraillePen 12 or the RefreshABraille 18, but I
thought I’d ask if there were any others in that size range that might be
worth looking at, and if there were any pros/cons to any of them. Does
the list think that I should wait until IOS6 and/or the new iTunes come
out before I purchase a braille display? Thanks for any quick thoughts on
 this subject.

Suggestions for integrating services?

2012-07-23 Thread Eric SS
I set a reminder for myself to call someone this morning. I used both the
native reminder app and also checkmark, which is an alternative time and
location-based reminder app. In the body of each I put the telephone number I
needed to call. Neither of those highlighted that number as a telephone number.

Is there something special I could have done to get one of those apps, or
another more appropriate, to dial that number.

Thanks for ideas!

CheckMark reminder App

2012-07-19 Thread Eric SS
This was on sale for $.99 Tuesday. I do not know for how long or what the
regular price will be.

It is billed as a simpler to use Reminder app. It does seem to be that. I
have always thought the native Reminder made you jump through a few hoops to
set a simple location or time based reminder. This seems easier.

I am still not getting it done as smoothly as I would like. I wonder if
anyone has been using this has any tips. I sure miss the days when people
did demos. If only I had the talent...

Give it a look and let me know what you find. Of course, IOS6 changes could
make many of these apps unnecessary.

NBC Olympics Live Extra App Not Accessible

2012-07-16 Thread Eric SS
I downloaded this app over the weekend, but the only button VO speaks is click
here, which leads you to a page for purchasing merchandise. I am assured there
are other buttons on the screen for schedules, etc.

I have not written to developers before, so I am not even sure what to say,
other than your app is not accessible to VoiceOver, but it probably could be.

Has anyone been in touch with NBC or the developer of the app and heard
anything about changes before the games begin next week.

Are therrre options for finding events other than the television?

This is supposed to make every minute of every event available. The only
condition was you have to provide your cable company. I thought I would try it
in advance to be sure my cable company is recognized before the games begin,
but can't even get that far, but you cannot get that far without VoiceOver,
either.

Thanks for any pointers!

Taxi Magic - Does it Work?

2012-07-16 Thread Eric SS
I had this recommended to me by a VoiceOver user. He was from LA, so maybe
mileage varies by location.

I have downloaded the app and signed up. I have three taxi services listed,
but they all just call the company dispatchers and do not allow me to book
reservations, as I understand you can, which is the great part of the
service. Maybe it is because that part of the service is not available here
yet.

So, I went to the web site on my 4S. It comes up and I see options for
scheduling rides, but the screen then jumps all over the place, such that
you cannot follow a simple paragraph. I have not experienced this in Safari
before. The jumping is so bad that I cannot even find where to schedule
service, let alone then trying to fill in fields for that service.

Any ideas on this app specifically or ways to make the screen just be still
here or other times? This looks like it could be a great app, if it will do
more than simply let me call the cab company; that is what the phone is for,
if that was all I wanted.

Many thanks for any ideas.

RE: Taxi Magic - Does it Work?

2012-07-16 Thread Eric SS
Wayne, thank you for that response! So, your mileage may vary does apply
here...

Do you know if we can use the payment portion of the app, though. Can we
make payment via the IPhone.

Also, maybe you know this from other users, but if we could book via the
phone, are you shown the fair so you know what your ride will cost before
you begin?

I have written to the developers in the meantime, so I guess they will say
the same thing you did -- that my city is just not fully implemented. I will
pass along any additional information they may provide.

A limited number of U.S. cities are supported by the app. So if you are only
given the option to call the cab company, instead of go through the setup
screens to book a ride on your phone, then your city is not supported yet
for in-app booking. I'm in the same boat since Austin is not supported yet
either. I wish it were though since it would be a great way of getting my
daily cab verses the old fashioned way through Yellow Cab. Oh well.

RE: Regarding complaint/accusation of treating the list as buy/sell/trade.

2012-07-16 Thread Eric SS
Amy, I am certainly no moderator, thankfully, but if I was you certainly
would be welcome on my list. As you said, your announcements have been low
key and mainly in response to questions, and you do contribute otherwise.

The person who complained seems to have lots of complaints. Lets hope he
mostly channels his gripes through moderators and we only see spill-over,
but I doubt it.

The list truly seems to be dissolving into training wheels for those too
lazy or too lonely so we get the very simple how do I and the very sad
how can I harsh someone's mellow.

Please do keep on keeping on. I appreciate the great products and thoughtful
information you provide.

It's an announcement. Simple as that. It is not a products for sale or
classified ad.
If list moderators prefer that I do not do this, please afford me
professional courtesy and contact me off list.
If that does happen, then by all means, I will not post such announcements
in the future.
I have purposefully made it a point *not* to clutter the list with traffic
that involves marketing/sales of any kind.
I am posting from my personal account, yes, at times making announcements
for my company, but I am not here to market products; which is why I also
participate on the list in ways that have absolutely nothing to do with the
products that we sell.
If someone happens to ask a question on list about our products, I am not
going to not answer them or provide them support if needed; though I will
ask that in future, in light of this statement, that unless you feel that
your question would be of benefit to list members on the whole, that you
email me off list, or via our web page by using the contact us, form.
Griping and complaining adds clutter to a list that already has heavy
traffic, and I do not want my company or similar postings to create more
such traffic.

I don't think this is a buy/sell list, and I think mentioning coupons like

than people pointing out when accessible apps become free in the App Store

Dropvox showing in folder

2012-07-07 Thread Eric SS
I just started using this last week. I have had Dropbox on my phone for a long
time and use it with an editor program Elements. My Dropbox folder has an
Elements folder, and I can access files and folders either by opening Elements
or opening Dropbox and then the Elements folder.

When I ask Dropvox to save files in the Elements folder, in a subfolder I named
Recordings, I can only access those saved files by going through Dropbox,
Elements and then Recordings. If I just open Elements and then the Recordings
folder, no files show up in there.

Any suggestions will be most appreciated. I would like to eliminate the extra
steps to get to my saved recordings.

One quick additional question re: Dropvox is what time limit is there on
recordings?

Many thanks and a great weekend! (I suppose everyone has weekends...)

http://www.sixthmode.com/lr-podcasts-eric
I believe Podcast 6 covers how to email a recording as well as how to send it
to drop box. However each podcast has a description that says what it covers
so you should find what you need at this page.
Podcast 7 is devoted entirely to export / import. This is how you can back up
all or part of your List Recorder contents to your Mac and then how to bring it
back if needed.

List Recorder is a big app. A person could use it easily as just a nice
recorder but it is much more then that. And the great thing is that it
continues to be developed by a enthusiastic developer and a growing group of
visually impaired volunteer supporters.

I hope you and others find these podcasts helpful.

On the other hand sometimes using apps specifically designed to work with
Voice Over and the visually impaired population provide excellent quality

It is interesting how some features in a app make it work better for one

use the FTP method of Voxie to transfer recordings. were in List Recorder I
some times use Dropbox, sometimes use email, and sometimes iTunes file share.

It depends on if I'm transferring one recording, many recordings, or backing

One more question about these options I don't seem to have.
I'm using my Calendar with Outlook 2010 on my PC.
Are you syncing your calendar with something other than Outlook 2010?

When I add an event on my calendar, I have:
Title,
Location,
Start and end times,
Repeat,
Alert,
URL,
Notes.

No invitees, free or busy status, nada.

I'm wondering if these options are only available when using an exchange
account.

thanks,

RE: New Bluetooth On/Off app available

2012-06-26 Thread Eric SS
Tom, after you have installed it, you need to go to your settings and find
bluetooth, the app, not bluetooth you find in general. Tap on it there and
set the quick on/off to on. Now, go into the app switcher and remove the app
bluetooth.

Now when you tap on the app bluetooth from a home screen, it will simply
enable or disable bluetooth.

Cool stuff. I grabbed it and loaded it onto both my iPhone and iPad. For a

Thanks for the podcast suggestion as well. I hadn't heard of that one.

On Jun 26, 2012, at 11:30 AM, Sieghard wrote:

Hello List,

Just listened to the latest episode of the Today in iOS Podcast and there is
a new app available which allows you to turn bluetooth on or off instantly
just by double tapping the app. Many such apps have been released at one
time or another and typically Apple will pull them since they, for some
reason, don't want people to do this. Anyhow, I just downloaded the app so
it is still there at this point and the cost is 99 Cents. Just do a search
in the app store for Bluetooth and it should be the first result, the app
is called BluetoothC by CXI Gaming.

Once you downloaded the app, go into Settings and find the app in your app
section after all the system stuff, there is just one setting you want to
enable and it is called Quick Mode. If you don't do this, the app will
launch and you still have to tap to turn Bluetooth on or off and then exit
the app, but with Quick Mode turned on, all you have to do is double tapp
the app to toggle bluetooth on or off, you will hear a tone and the app
returns you to the home screen. I just downloaded it and it works perfectly
and instantly.

Just as a warning, the Today in iOS listener who called this in to the
Podcast said he had another Bluetooth app and not only did Apple pull it
from the App Store, but when he updated to iOS 5.1.1 the app mysteriously
vanished from his iPhone and presumably is now burried in Apple's
unauthorized app graveyard. So, your 99 Cents may be wasted when iOS 6 comes
out, but also as a heads up on the same episode it was mentioned that in the
iOS 6 Beta Bluetooth has been taken out of General and moved right up into
the main Settings where Airplane Mode and WiFi are, so while apparently in
iOS 6 there once again will be no super quick shortcut or a way to turn
bluetooth on or off from the status bar or with SIRI, at least it is only 2
taps away. Also, for those who are interested in news about iOS 6, there is
a bit of that in almost every episode of Today in iOS as apparently not all
developers care too much about the Non Disclosure Agreement they signed and
send information about new features in to Rob who does the Podcast.

OAnd one last bit of iPhone trivia, apparently the iPhone will be 5 years
old on June 29, this is the date when the first iPhone was released in
2007... it's come a long way, let's see what it will be in 2017 and whether
there will be other smartphone options that are equally accessible for us
blind/visually impaired users!

Regards,

Sieghard

Cue - an app for organizing your life

2012-06-25 Thread Eric SS
I am wondering if anyone has tried this app. It is supposed to aggregate
information from your calendar, contacts, mail, Facebook, reminders, etc. I was
able to set it up and attach accounts, but when I finish set up and went to use
it, I see to unlabeled buttons and then nothing. After those buttons, as I flip
across the screen, I hear the iPhone sound, but get no speech feedback.

It sounds like a good idea and, since they were able to make set up accessible,
perhaps they can make the rest of the app fully accessible, too. However, I
have not had anyone look at the app so I do not know what kind of layout is on
the screen.

Any feedback will be appreciated. Maybe someone else would like to try the app
and contact developers.

From the News

2012-06-23 Thread Eric SS
And you wonder why Johnny can't read. From Reuters: Egypt find out their
next president on Sunday.

Another headline that caught my attention was Turkey vows necessary action
against Syria. Hum, it was necessary to say they would only take necessary
action? Perhaps they have a history of taking unnecessary action?

Of course, my favorite foreign affairs debate is, if Turkey was to invade
Iraq, would Greece help? (Sounds much funnier than it reads.)

Now, back to our irregularly, unscheduled and unnecessary programming...

Re: Recommendations wanted for keyboard case for iPhone 4S

2012-06-22 Thread Eric SS
I second the recommendation for the box wave keyboard buddy. It is basically a
slider with two rails that snap on Yeeither side of your iPhone and the
keyboard slides out from under the iPhone it does basically double the
thickness of the iPhone but it really doesn't add that much weight. There is a
cut out for the camera lens and all ports and buttons. It charges by mini USB
and holds a charge for very long time. Does have an off switch. As I recall
there were debits on F and J and I can't really remember the rest of the
keyboard configuration but it was a very nice design device

It can be a bit of a challenge to take it off the phone because it clamps on
pretty tight. But it is doable and gets easier with each time. You may want to
remove it in times when you know youwill not need a keyboard and do not want
the added bulk. The alternative too that is a portable keyboard that you will
have to remember to stow somewhere in case you need it.

Hi folks,
My contract with ATT is officially over and have set my mind to get an
iPhone 4S (although Android has good programming potential, at this time,
accessibility was superior on the iPhone after using an iTouch). Since I do
a lot of typing, I'd like to get your opinions on useful keyboard case for
iPhone (most of them are slide-out variety). I'd like something that's quite
durable, works with iPhone 4S and possibly on other systems and has good
layout (preferably that of typical smartphones) with under $100 price tag
(around 30 to 60 dollars). Also, if you are using a keyboard case, could you
post the layout of the keyboard case and the keyboard itself?
Thanks and looking forward to your opinions.
Cheers,
Joseph

RE: Skype -- Two Problems

2012-06-20 Thread Eric SS
Sieghard, thank you so much for this tip. I often forget that a complete
reinstall can fix many problems, and it did this time. This fix seems to
work for problems created when updating breaks something.

I have only given it one test, but I was able to enter 30 or so digits after
the call was connected and they all took. Also, I found the end call button
can be reached with a 4-finger tap on the bottom half of the screen. I do
not remember this being the case before, but I generally just flicked to
find it.

I see they have eliminated the History tab. Overall, I am pleased with the
update. After so many complaints about broken features, I have not updated
since last fall or so.

Thank you again for the help!

Hi eric,

Maybe others can chime in here, but I cannot reproduce this behaviour on my
iPhone 4S, I am also running the latest Skype update and the latest iOS
version. I just called the canadian Air Miles line which at this hour only
has automatic menus. I first put the call on Speakerphone since I didn't
have a headset connected, then I selected 1 for English and after another
1 or 2 choices entered my 11-digit collector number, then my 4-digit PIN.
After that I was in the main menu and I went in and out of various
selections at least 20 times without problems. When i was done I double
tapped the End Call button and the call was immediately disconnected.

If you haven't done so yet, maybe delete the app from your phone and
redownload it from scratch.

someone who much prefers using a keyboard when needing to edit where ctrl v

if you are going the right direction. I very much hate editing on the
phone itself, if Vokul makes a mistake, in fact, I just leave it there, and
if I make a horrible on typing I just delete the whole thing and try again.
I don't do lengthy messages or e-mail on the phone, only mail I get is to
send phone numbers to the address connected to the phone because reading
e-mail on the phone is not for me at least a pleasant experience. I have
lots of uses for the phone but editing, cutting and pasting are not among

I like the phone and it goes everywhere with me but those functions and the

Re: Editing text in iPhone

2012-06-18 Thread Eric SS
Jenny, you first must be in and edit field. You will want to choose character
word or line. Then place your index and middle fingers in the middle of the
screen. To select a character, word or line, spread your fingers slowly apart.
If you are selecting by line, you will hear all of the line spoken or maybe
just the last few words. You will lift your fingers, put them together and put
them back on the screen and spread them apart again to select more lines. Some
people have found other maneuvers to accomplish this, such as putting both for
fingers on the screen and pulling them apart. I have not had luck with that
method. If you find that you have selected a line too many, you can simply
squeeze your fingers back together to unselect that character, word or line.
Once you think you have selected all necessary, then use the rotor to get to
edit and flip your finger up or down to select copy or cut, etc.

Hope this helps some. It does take some practice and some frustration, too.

Hi, first set your rotor to characters. Now, in short, if you swipe
down, you are moving forward. If you swipe up, you are moving backward.
Your cursor is landing between the letters. So, if you have the first 7
letters of the alphabet, abcdefg, and you swipe down until you hear c,
that means your cursor is between c and d. If you double-tap delete, you
will delete the letter c because you are moving forward and c is the
last letter you heard. Now, again, taking abcdefg and let's say you are
swiping up and the last letter you heard was b, that means your cursor
is between a and b. This is because you are moving backwards and the
last letter you heard was b, so this time if you press delete, the
 letter a will be deleted.

Also, check the archives of this list as this topic was discussed
recently. Maybe they will help with a better explanation.

 Good luck.

Go to that favorite.

In the top right corner of the screen is the edit button. Double tap that.

You should hear delete. Double tap that and confirm.

Skype -- Two Problems

2012-06-15 Thread Eric SS
I have the latest version of Skype on a 4S. I am using credits to make local
calls.

The first issue was present with the older version of Skype. When connected in
a call and entering multiple digits to navigate menus, after about a dozen
entries nothing is accepted. I still hear the tone, but the entry does not work.

My second issue is with the latest Skype. I thought this had been corrected and
is why I finally updated versions. The end call button does not work. I was
finally able to end a call by disabling VoiceOver and tapping until I got the
right button.

Are there fixes to either of these problems?

All thanks for suggestions.

do help them stay in place. I forget what keyword I searched for, but there
were several options under $10.

 Hi Jared,

What I don't like about many of the earbud style headsets on the
market is the fact that most of the ones which claim to have good
sound quality are those which seal off your ear hence I can't hear
what is going on around me. For everyday use, phone calls, listening
to audio books etc. I really think the earbuds that come with any
iPhone or ipod Touch for $35 (replacement cost) are hard to beat. The
work extremely well, the remote works extremely well and I had more
people complaining about the sound quality with the $130 Jawbone ERA
bluetooth headset. I also rarely had problems with them breaking
unless I accidently dropped the earbud in the sink when it was hanging
around my neck, I wonder what you do to break them in 3 months, they
are not emergency shoe laces and also do not double as a dog leash...
just saying *smile*. By the way, if you have purchased the extended
Apple care, earphones are covered if they don't work because of bad
connection at the jack or the earbuds etc. Not sure if they replace
them every 3 months, but they did specifically tell me that when they
tried to talk me into buying the Apple Care plan. If you do find some
which allow you to still hear your environment and which you find are
of better quality don't forget to share it with the list.

Try the Bose MEI2. They do have the iPod controls.

These are the best sounding and best fitting ear buds I have ever tried, and I
have tried many. They are $129, though. Well worth it if you use your butts as
much as I do and expect quality sound.

Using 4Square

2012-06-05 Thread Eric SS
Raul, thank you for the suggestion. I have downloaded the app and signed up,
but now what? Can you point me to a tutorial or demo.

I am going to San Francisco next week, and I hoped to find something that would
help me to find a coffee shop or just to see what shops I am passing. Is that
how you see using the app? As you walk down the street, will it tell you what
stores or buildings you are passing?

As I am home the next couple of days, in a neighborhood, I don't really have
the chance to put the app through its paces before I needed. Therefore, any
help will be most appreciated!

Re: Bluetooth headset

For stereo listening, I highly recommend the Plantronics 903. They sound very
good for voiceover and even pretty darned good for music. Their shortcoming, as
I find with most Bluetooth devices, is voice. Whether it is giving Siri

It is made by Motorola, and I gotit off Amazon. If anyone is interested I can

The done button is on the bottom right.

 Hi All,

 is a link:

The good news is that the FM reception and sound quality is fantastic!
The bad news is that the app is not accessible with voice over at all,
and I do not see anyway it could ever be.
The device plugs into the bottom of the iPhone which totally disables
speech. The headset plugs into the bottom of this device.

Under my video magnifier I was able to set up presets and I can run
the app via memory with voice over off.
The stations are listed in numerical order on the favorites page. The
main downside is the Tuner button is in the center of the screen,
about 1 inch from the top of the phone, and if you hit this
accidentally, you will need to find the done button on the bottom
left to return to the favorites page. With no voice over it would be
difficult for a totally blind user to avoid doing this.

If you are like me and listen to one radio station all the time then
you are in luck, the app retains the last station listened to, so all
you would have to do is double tap on the icon and the iFm will start.
And with voice over on, there is no danger of accidentally hitting the
 tuner button.

IMHO definitely worth the 20 bucks!

 Good luck,
 Chuck

FM Radio and Bluetooth

2012-06-01 Thread Eric SS
I am sorry I deleted the note asking for more details on this and the
original subject line.

This is taken from the Amazon site. The device is about the size and shape
of a pedometer. It comes with a clip to attach to your clothing, etc. or can
be hung around your neck. This would not be my go-to choice for listening to
music or radio, but it is handy. The sound is almost like the simulated
stereo you will sometimes hear attempted. It does sound better when using
speakers and does enable you to make any set of speakers with a 3.5mm
connector bluetooth. I have not tested the microphone quality, either
talking by phone or using Siri.

Re: Extending battery life on the 4s

Do look at location services and notifications. A lot of things slip in there
that on thinking about it you will realize you really don't need or want

Re: Extending battery life on the 4s

2012-05-23 Thread Eric SS
I would turn off Facebook. I do not need to know as soon as someone tags me in
a picture. Chase: I know they may contact me with card activity, etc., But they
will telephone me for that sort of important information, too. Weather widget:
I definitely do not need to know when it is raining outside; if I am outside, I
already know it and, if I am not outside, I don't need to know.

I only have telephone, messages, reminders, calendar and Navigon showing in
notifications. Your mileage may very.

Re: Extending battery life on the 4s

2012-05-23 Thread Eric SS
Seighar mentioned a very important issue that I forgot to bring up. If you are
going out for any length of time, say more than a couple of hours, turn your
Wi-Fi off. It can use a lot of energy searching for nonexistent or unwanted
Wi-Fi.

Hello Kim and others,

The article you referred to points out the major issues, I found that
changing email from Push to even 15 minutes makes a difference. WiFi
also does take a fair amount of battery, I typically keep it on though
unless I am out and about most of the day. Most people who criticise
the iPhone's battery performance don't take into account that most
people also use their iPhone to do way more stuff and to me the
battery does OK if I can get through the day doing what I need to do.
I believe investing in an external battery case or battery pack is the
way to go here. I prefer just an external battery since I have a very
nice leather case and prefer my iPhone to be as slim as possible and
any battery case adds a bit of bulk. The New Trend IMP1000 which
somebody just asked about yesterday has good reviews and a wopping
11,000 MA with 41 WH and that allows you to charge your phone up to 6
times before having to recharge the battery. It's of course a bit on
the larger side with about 4 inches by 4 inches by a bit over an inch
thick (think portable external hard drive or about as wide and long as
your iPhone is long and 3 times as thick). Anyhow, there are tons of
options out there ranging from as small as a good sized USB stick to
my Brunton Impel which weighs 2 pounds, is a bit larger than an old
VHS tape, but I can fully charge my laptop on it and my iPhone and
it's still not dead with 145 WH (Watt Hours) it has 3.5 times the
capacity of the New Trend IMP1000 and you could charge a new iPad
close to 3 times. Best to go to a store and ask them to show you a few
options and pick one that meets your budget and that you like.

Take care,
Sieghar

I use the Phillips Filio I'm not quite sure how that is spelled. It is about 10
inches wide and has very very good sound. It is just a portable speaker, but
does have auxiliary for 3.5 mm input. It costs around $100. Also can be carried
around the house with about an eight hour rechargeable battery. It does not

RE: Facebook advice

2012-05-17 Thread Eric SS
John, I have tried about five different apps, and still the Face Book app
works as well as any or maybe a bit better, depending on your needs.

I am not sure what it cannot do, as I am a pretty low-level user, only
posting status updates and sometimes where I am, and liking or commenting on
others' posts. I believe I can send pictures, but I am not sure if I can tag
others.

It has taken forever to get where I can understand how it works, sort of,
but I think I am close now. It is a matter of classifying people into lists
and then checking each list for updates, as it doesn't seem the News Feed is
most reliable posting everything or posting in proper order. That is where I
may just not be understanding the point of that particular feature. I still
struggle with figuring out what kind of notification from whom, but I
eventually do find them.

What's a good app for a 3GS that will let me do more than just update FB

I'm having no luck editing some fields of my profile from the PC and my next
thought was doing it the hard way, by typing all of it on the phone.
It may turn out to actually be easier in the long run with a bit of

Recommendations?

I pointed out how much I could do with the app now, and it would take very

The person I talked with took my information and said he would forward it on to

wondering if Voiceover would announce the prompts given by the meter. Someone
from another list said that the app is almost accessible. Labels are above
the buttons, so one isn't always sure what button applies to what label.
 Double tapping didn't do anything.
I plan to take a look at the app myself since it can be used for logging
blood sugars, insulin, etc. Maybe if enough people try the app and write to
the company about accessibility, it will be even more useful.
There has been some discussion on the list about diabetes record keeping
apps. I didn't like any of the ones I tried, so I used an app called Tap
Forms Lt which allows one to create databases. The app is totally accessible
and allows one to create and customize a form as well as to use built in
forms. Having a meter that would communicate with an accessible app would
save some of the work in keeping track of things.

How to Calibrate Your Home Button | Snapguide

2012-05-15 Thread Eric SS

 by Roberto Garza

Sometimes when you press the home button on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch
there can be a delay or even take a couple of tries before it responds. In
this tutorial you will see how to fix this.

Step 1
Open a stock application like the Calendar, Weather, or Youtube
Step 2
With one of these apps opened, hold down the power button until the 'slide
to power off' control appears.
Step 3
As soon as you see it, press the home button and keep it pressed until the
red slider disappears and the app is forced quit to the home menu.
Step 4
That's it! Now you should have a much more responsive home button.

http://snapguide.com/guides/calibrate-your-home-button/

I do not subscribe to this site, so not sure of their information. I have
not tried this re-calibration, but intend to on my wife's phone, as the home
button seems to have issues.

Sandy, I type with my second (index) finger with my left hand. I only use
one finger to type. I started out with Standard Typing mode, then after a
friend recommendation switched to Touch Typing mode and fell in love with it
almost instantly. You can also set up keyboard shortcuts in settings,

automatically expands to the longer one. The one set up is a good example.
Hope this is of some help.

Facebook App

2012-05-14 Thread Eric SS
Browsing through my list of friends, I noticed that some of them have a phone
button. Others do not.

What is that and why do some people have it and others do not?

All thanks!

Re: Longer cord?

2012-05-11 Thread Eric SS
Look for an Amazon seller call Bono. They are out of Wisconsin. My wife has
bought several six-foot cords, and just gave me one the other day. They are
like under three dollars without any shipping. If you have any problem finding
them, drop me a note and I can ask her to look it up on her records.

Re: How To Revert To Old Apps

2012-05-11 Thread Eric SS
You first want to delete the app off your phone. Then before attaching your
phone to your computer, make sure that automatic synchronization is not turned
on. Then you want to go down to the devices select apps and select the old app
that you want to install onto the phone.

VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off

2012-05-11 Thread Eric SS
I would like to point out there is no mention in Settings of a Premium
voice. You either have Compact voice on or off. It is misleading to talk
about voices in any other way, even if in practical terms that is the
meaning.

Here is where I am confused. When I look at my settings, I see Use Compact
Voice On. Does that mean I am currently using the non-Compact voice or that
the Compact voice is on. If I tap that button and it changes to Use Compact
Voice Off, is the compact voice off and I am using the premium voice or
will it begin using the premium, Compact voice when I tap that button and
it changes to Use Compact Voice On.

There is probably some engineer's logic to these toggles, but I do not see
them as consistent throughout settings. Sometimes it means this is the state
you are in, but other times it means this is what you will change to.

I am simple, so any simple explanation will be appreciated.

To my ear, I am using the original VoiceOver voice when my setting is Use
Compact Voice On. I have been told this is the compact voice and not the
high-quality, premium voice. But, if I switch to that other one, it sounds
gravelly and distorted. I may not have perfect pitch or all the qualities of
some master musicians' ears, but I do have good hearing um, when I listen,
so says my wife). :)

Away with me...

Eric

RE: VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off

2012-05-11 Thread Eric SS
Neil, thanks a ton for that explanation.

I guess I will have to try installing the higher quality voice again. When
it was first released, I did do as you described and I think I got the new
voice, but as I said, it sure does not sound better or high quality to my
ear. It sounds very rough.

You have tweaked my curiosity, though, and I will set use compact voice
off and leave the phone plugged in overnight to see what happens. People
have praised the higher quality, which I never did hear, and I figured our
interpretations of quality just had to be way different.

Thanks again!

Eric

Eric,

You are using Compact Voice when it says Compact Voice On,and you are not
using it when it is off.

The higher quality or premium voice is in use when the setting is off, i.e.
not compact.

So not compacting your voice, equals better higher quality voice.

note, that when you turn compact voice off, you may not notice a difference
for a good few hours whilst the none compact voice is downloaded.

it is better to have it off.
