Yes, it'll work if you ran a digital optical cable from that port to your
audio system.

There's an audio port on the apple tv. I'm curious if the apple tv would
work with no hdmi cable and just the audio cable. We're debating running the
apple tv into our sound system and doing away with the tv but we're curious
to know if that would work.

If anyone knows this the info would be appreciated.

Re: apple tv question

2012-11-05 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi.
That depends on what you're using your Apple tv for. If you try to duplicate
the screen from your Mac without having turned on your tv, nothing happens. Of
course no picture but no sound as well. The same happens if you go into any app
which shows some video. It's only audio stuff which works without a tv.

I have a couple questions about Apple TV.

Is it able to stream .avi files over your network? If not, could something
like Oplayer be installed on it to facilitate streaming said file format?

Re: apple tv question

2012-11-05 Thread Brent Harding
Would there be any point in a blind person jail breaking one? I'm sure none
of the alternative systems have accessibility in them unless it's just the
same OS with apps. I think all it can do is stream whatever ITunes can play,
and the things it supports on its own right now, but I don't think it
complies with that standard that all the other boxes do that will just take
in whatever it can get from anything on the network.

RE: apple TV question

2014-10-14 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I have the opposite problem. I do not use the radio on the Apple TV because
it is a pain to stop when I want to do something else. It is the same with
their other music service that keeps trying to sell me albums instead of
letting me go do other things instead of just switching me to a different
app. I generally use Vevo for music listening on the Apple TV. Or Airplay
something from my PC or iPhone.

RE: apple tv question

2014-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It could be the quality of your WiFi which would include interference from
other wireless devices and so on. Could you connect your Apple TV to your
router via a network cable and see if the problem persists? That would really
be the only way to make sure your WiFi is not the cause and in situations like
that you have to start illiminating potential causes.

Hello. Those of you who have the apple tv and use the radio feature, do
you have a problem with stations going away after about 10 to 20
minutes? I thought I had fixed this issue a while back but it's
returned. I tried listening to a couple old time radio stations the
other night and they would just go away and I would get a message that
an error had occured loading the stations. Other times when they've
disappeared there has been no message at all.
I just wondered if any one else has run into this problem happening.
Thanks,

RE: apple tv question

2014-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Scott,

Is this something new? I have not had issues with my Apple TV which is also
on WiFi and apart from Patty's message haven't read anything about others
having problems wth their Apple TV. There are many factors which could
effect WiFi reliability. Here is one example: about a year ago or so I had
a hard time connecting my iPhone and laptop to the WiFi at my business and
one of my employees experienced the same with a different iPhone (I have a
5S and he has a 4S). In other words, 3 different devices had problems even
though signal strength was fine, I could be standing right next to the modem
and it was still not reliable. I ended up buying a different modem, then I
bought a high-end Cisco business class access point with this big antenna
and nothing helped. To make a long story short, the problem was a Logitech
external wireless soundcard. I think it's called an X-Fi, but I can't
remember. It basically consists of a base unit which you can connect to a
computer via USB and then you have remote units (you can have multiple
remote units) which receive the signal from that base unit and which you can
connect to a speaker or different speakers in different rooms. Anyhow, for
some reason I thought I should take away other wireless devices and as soon
as I disconnected this wireless sound card I had no more issues connecting
to my WiFi and getting fast download speeds etc. Before even if my laptop
connected and I tried to play a video over my local area network (just
something I had on my server's hard drive) it would only play a few seconds
at a time and then buffer for a long time, then another 5 seconds or so etc.
All these issues went away once that other device was out of the picture.
Having a modem which is capable of 2.4 and 5 Ghz would definitely help
especially in an environment where you have lots of WiFi networks and maybe
where people have various other wireless devices like cordless phones and so
on around you and you can't necessarily control what is being used, but
being on an older model which is only capable of 2.4 Ghz may not necessarily
be the only issue.

Sieghard

Hi,

5 GHz fixed most of our issues. The only time we have issues now is when our

usually at peak times in the afternoon. It is purely an issue with the ISP

I haven't heard much mentioned about this in a while so thought I'd ask. Is
the Apple TV still accessible and if so, which one should a person buy. I was
looking on Amazon and saw one for $89 and also saw a 3rd generation revision A.
Any thought as I am looking at this for a Christmas present. Also, what all
can you get on it? Can you still use Net Flicks? Thanks again.

2014-12-05 Thread Cristóbal
That rumor has been floating around now for a while. This year, the year before
and the year before that. It may well be true this time and one would hope so,
but if they want to get themselves something now, and not have to depend on
rumors that keep on being disproven, then the refurb model directly from Apple
would be the way to go.

RE: Apple TV question

2014-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kliph,

I think a new Apple TV in 2015 is almost a certainty. They will not add a hard
drive or at least it is highly unlikely. However, a new Apple TV could replace
your cable or satellite receiver and offer you access to everything you
currently get from your cable or satellite provider. Developers have also found
code which indicates a new Apple TV could be tied into Home kit and become a
hub for all your home automation and connected devices such as thermostats,
door locks, security systems and so on. Furthermore a new Apple TV would most
likely get its own app store so third party developers can make their own apps
for Apple TV. This means you would be able to use many apps you use on your
phone on your Apple TV like your favorite Podcast apps, things like Audible,
Spotify or even your banking apps and then there of course is gaming.

In short, there is a hole lot Apple could add and while it may have started out
as a pet project, I don’t believe that it is and just because apple hasn’t
updated it in several years doesn’t mean they aren’t working on something which
when it will come out blow everybody’s mind. Steve Jobbs said at one point that
he solved the issue of the living room or whichever way he phrased it and
whatever apple is going to do probably is just taking time. For one thing they
have to negotiate with all the content providers so they can offer all the
channels available which you are used to getting through your cable or
satellite provider. Wouldn’t a fully accessible set top box which gives you
access to anything you want plus offer an app store and full access to home
automation be nice? Why use my iPhone and run down it’s battery when I’m at
home if I can do everything I can do with my iPhone on my Apple TV?

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi,

I am all for an updated Apple TV. The only reason we have not pulled the
plug is because the ISP discourages it with tier pricing. Plus some of the
apps we already use on the Apple TV work better if we do not unplug. The day
will come, however, and I think sooner than later, when the Apple TV with
voice is all we will need. Smile!

RE: Apple TV question

2014-12-09 Thread Cristóbal
Apple sells refurbished models on their own online store. You can of course buy
a brand new Apple TV for the full $100.00 or score one for sale, but it’s still
going to be the same 2012 model that Apple will sell you refurbished and with
one year Apple Care for $75.00. Refurbished can mean many things. Maybe they
are opened boxes returned for this or that reason. Perhaps a cable or internal
part was replaced, cosmetic fixes and so on, but this way you would be getting
it directly from Apple with Apples guaranty.

Some people are fundamentaly opposed to buyign refurbished. That’s their
perogative. I just don’t’ see much sense in paying full retail or even more
than what I would pay on sale for a reconditioned model that is going on three
years when you can get it straight from the manufacturer.

Now, if you want to have the latest and greatest, then that’s something totally
different, but as Apple has taken their sweet time in updating the Apple TV, it
would depend on how much you want to wait. Maybe three months, maybe another
year… Besides, if you want to get something now, then again, my recommendation
would be to save yourself the $25.00 and just grab a refurb Apple TV from the
Apple online store.

Re: Apple TV Question

2015-01-05 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Richard,
If all you want to do is stream purely audio programming, such as your iTunes,
or other audio sources through your Apple TV to the sound bar, you don't need a
TV.
However, if you want to watch something on the Apple TV which has a video
component, such as Netflix, or some other video thing, then yes, you need that
TV connection. Or the thing won't work. It needs to see the video. That doesn't
mean you have to use the TV for your audio. But it does mean you need the HDMI
from your AppleTV to the television.
This is true for my first generation Apple TV. I have no reason to think it
would be any different for the second generation, but I can't prove it. When I
looked up the differences, the only thing I found was at the second-generation
let you have a higher video then what I have, 1080 P versus whatever it is I
have that I don't remember.

RE: Apple TV Question

2015-01-05 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I was very surprised and pleased a few weeks ago when I accidentally
discovered that I can thanks to the digital audio cable listen to audio
files from my PC without the nuisance of turning on the sixty inch Samsung
or listen to a movie on the Apple TV on the same Sound bar without turning
on said television.

Laughs!

What was the source of that movie that you listen to without turning on the TV?
That is, did you stream it from your computer or your Mac? Or was it from
Netflix or something else that you actually brought up on Apple TV?

RE: Apple TV Question

2015-01-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If your Soundbar has a digital optical input you should be able to run a
tosslink optical cable from the optical output of the Apple TV to the optical
input of your soundbar.
I am not sure why soundbars even use HDMI since HDMI is for video and autio in
one connection and you only need to send audio to the soundbar. Most soundbars
I have seen have an optical input which you connect to the optical output of
your TV and some maybe have some analogue inputs. I guess the primary purpose
of a soundbar is to replace the TV speakers which is why many of them just have
an optical input which connects to your TV and the TV becomes your hub for all
your devices.

Not true. The HDMI cable does have sound, but it also pushes the video, and
when you have a sound bar that has this feature, you don’t need the optical
cable. I use the HDMI cable from my sound bar to my TV, and both audio and
video are pushed through the HDMI cable, get a HD picture on the TV, as well as
HD sound.

Re: Apple TV Question

2015-01-05 Thread Mary Otten
Well, my sound bar does not work well if I connect the digital optical cable. I
get very choppy voiceover, such that it really is not usable. But, if I use the
analog cable from the AppleTV to the sound bar, it works fine. You could I
suppose do the HDMI thing, from the Apple TV to the TV and from the tv to the
sound bar if your sound bar has an HDMI input. That should work too.

You say "when I use the analogue cable from the Apple TV to the sounbar it

1 optical toslink
And both of those are digital. Are you using an digital otpical to analogue

RE: Apple TV Question

2015-01-06 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I have both the HDMI and the digital audio connected to the Apple TV. The
digital audio goes to the Samsung Sound bar and the HDMI goes to the Samsung
sixty inch Television. So I can do audio from the computer which is both my
ACER and an HP laptop or I can do audio from my iPhone 5S via airplay
through the Sound bar without the TV being on. I Can also do it through the
Apple TV via the HDMI via the television without the Sound bar being on but
the sound is not nearly as good. I can also do any Apple TV app such as
Netflix or Hulu Plus without turning on the television simply by turning on
the sound bar and the Apple TV. And then controlling everything via the
Apple TV remote. I discovered all of this totally by accident after having
all of this connected this way for a year. I should have known better being
that I worked at a flesh and blood radio station back in the eighties for
years when they still required you study and get a physical paper license to
be a DJ. It's not like today when anyone with a sound card can call
themselves a DJ, Laughs!

Re: Apple TV Question

2015-01-06 Thread Peter Logan

Richard ..

No .. you can then actually get sound out of both places .. however I find
there is a slight lag and get a tiny bit of echo .. strangely the echo only
seems to be on dialogue...

What I have done is ...

HDMI - Apple TV to TV
HDMI - Dish receiver to TV
HDMI - Blue ray DVD to TV

Digital audio - Apple TV to Sound bar
Digital audio - Dish receiver to sound bar
Digital audio - DVD player to sound bar

Actually the connections all run into a splitter then into the sound bar.
This way I can get the audio from all inputs out through the sound bar, my
sound bar has only 2 inputs. I also can just get it from the TV as all of
these are connected to the TV via HDMI. Never have to turn the TV on to
actually watch TV or a DVD. Only need the TV when watching video content
from Apple TV, and then a lot of times after it gets going can turn off the
TV and continue listening via the sound bar.

If you want to contact me off list .. that is fine: pdlloga...@gmail.com
and I can hopefully help you out. I just setup this last month...

Hope that helps ..

If your Soundbar has a digital optical input you should be able to run a
tosslink optical cable from the optical output of the Apple TV to the
optical input of your soundbar.
I am not sure why soundbars even use HDMI since HDMI is for video and autio
in one connection and you only need to send audio to the soundbar. Most
soundbars I have seen have an optical input which you connect to the optical
output of your TV and some maybe have some analogue inputs. I guess the
primary purpose of a soundbar is to replace the TV speakers which is why
many of them just have an optical input which connects to your TV and the TV
becomes your hub for all your devices.

Hi Richard,
If all you want to do is stream purely audio programming, such as your
iTunes, or other audio sources through your Apple TV to the sound bar, you
don't need a TV.
However, if you want to watch something on the Apple TV which has a video
component, such as Netflix, or some other video thing, then yes, you need
that TV connection. Or the thing won't work. It needs to see the video. That
doesn't mean you have to use the TV for your audio. But it does mean you
need the HDMI from your AppleTV to the television.
This is true for my first generation Apple TV. I have no reason to think it
would be any different for the second generation, but I can't prove it. When
I looked up the differences, the only thing I found was at the
second-generation let you have a higher video then what I have, 1080 P
versus whatever it is I have that I don't remember.

RE: Apple TV Question

2015-01-06 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I get better sound through the optical than the HDMI. I use the optical with
the Apple TV and keep the television muted. Otherwise I get an echo. So I
have the HDMI connected as well as the Optical however, I do not actually
use it all that much. I use the video but for the sound I prefer the optical
coming out of the Apple TV to the Sound bar and it's wireless subwoofer.

Hi Richard,
If all you want to do is stream purely audio programming, such as your
iTunes, or other audio sources through your Apple TV to the sound bar, you
don't need a TV.

RE: Apple TV Question

2015-01-11 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

For awhile, we have been thinking about purchasing an Apple Tv because,
apparently, it is easier to access Netflix and other such services on the Apple
Tv, as opposed to the Apps on the iDevices. We have the bose Sound bar, but,
we have connected it directly to the audio outputs on our cable box, rather
than the TV. We do have a Samsung TV, which we use when we have company; but,
since my husband and I are totally blind, we simply want the audio. So, here's
the question, rather than connecting the Apple TV to the actual TV set, can we
connect it directly to the cable box and still get Netflix? I was wondering if
that is possible because isn't the video signal, like the audio signal, coming
from the cable box?

2015-03-13 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

Not that I'm aware of unfortunately. As part of network diagnostics it
does do a small speed test but helpfully it doesn't actually tell you
the speed that it got. NB: I last did this a couple of upgrades ago so
this may have changed.

In an effort to narrow down the problem you could try connecting over
Ethernet instead of wireless to see if that's the issue or not.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi folks.

I'm experiencing freezing on Netflyx through my Apple TV, despite
having 125 MBPS download speed and a nice Mikrotik router. I have
varified that I can actually get those speeds when running a speed

Is there a way to run a speed test on an Apple TV to see what it is

Are use AppleTV for the Apple events, makes it much easier to not have to go
through somebody all the time., Are you for Netflix, Hulu, and crackle, Netflix
carries some of the video that is described. I've used it for bread box, and
let's see, some of the shopping channels I like you don't want to have a
service provider and less I have to you can I would so get many of the news

have a provider for, but then you put in your email address and password and
they check it out and what you go. I have Travel Channel, sci-fi Channel, do it

eligible for any of the things that you would have on iTunes itself. All of the
radio stations, if you have a playlist attached to your computer and/or your

RE: apple TV question

2022-11-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Most new smart TV's have the Apple TV app, however while many smart TV's now
have some sort of screenreader and accessibility, I still question if they can
match an actual Apple TV with respect to accessibility.
As for downloading an Apple TV app I doubt that is possible, either your smart
TV has Apple TV or it does not.
Keep in mind that The Apple TV 4K as in the physical device is m ore than the
Apple TV service. You can access other things like Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple
Music and so on via your Apple TV and you can also use the Netflix app, Disney
Plus app and so on which are built in to your smart TV. For that matter you
could get a Roku TV stick for $20 or $30 and you also get access to all of
that. There is a lot of duplication so you just have to decide what you think
you need in order to accomplish what you want to accomplish. The Apple TV 4K
which was just recently released is not all that expensive, but if all you do
is watch Netflix and Disney Plus and you find you can do this accessibly
through your TV then you probably don't need it.

Your new TV will probably have the ability to download an Apple TV app. If that
app is accessible and you can find your way around it, you won’t need to buy a

There should be no reason why the smart TV cannot download the Apple TV plus
app.
Since we got our smart TV, the physical Apple TV has been mostly collecting
dust; though my wife used it on occasion in her sowing room. Though now she has
a Roku stick on that not quite as smart of a smart tv...

RE: apple tv question

2022-12-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Jed, unless you list the exact model of smart TV you have nobody can tell you
what you need. The fact is that most smart TV's have apps for the major
streaming services preinstalled, e.g. Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV, Prime
Video etc. Furthermore most smart TV's have their own app store where you can
download additional apps if they are available for the platform your TV uses.
The most common ones would be Roku, Web OS (that is LG) and Google TV (Sony and
many others). Also most new smart TV's have some sort of screenreader built in,
but how well it works you would have to try and I would venture a claim which
is that most likely the Apple TV box with Voiceover probably is still the best
experience for a blind person.
We have one of the higher-end LG OLED TV's, the C-series although ours is from
2 years ago and there are new ones this year, but we also still have just
bought a new Applt TV 4K, also the one which was released this year. Partly we
also do this because it acts as a hub for Apple Home Kit and if you buy the 128
Gb version which I believe is $149.99 in the US you get a device which also has
an ethernet port and is capable of thread networking which may or may not
become important in the years to come. This is a protocol used by the new
"Matter" smart home standard and Apple, Google and I believe Amazon have all
signed on and said they will support it. Basically if you have a thread network
capable device such as an Apple TV or a router (many of the new routers are
also thread network enabled) then connected home devices can talk directly to
each other without having to go out over WiFi.
This is of course just a simple explanation, if you want to know more you can
Google it as there are many articles available about Matter and thread
networking.
Also, if you, for example, have a Sonos Arc which can play Dolby Atmos and you
want to take advantage of Apple Music songs which are encoded for Dolby Atmos
(special audio) you have to play them on your Apple TV which is connected to
the Sonos Arc soundbar via the TV. You can play Apple Music directly from the
Sonos app, but at least at this point you don't get special audio that way.

Hello Jed,

I was just wondering what your solution was to your dilemma. Are you able to
access the Apple TV app on your new Smart TV? Or are you continuing to use your
physical Apple TV? If you are using the Apple TV app on your Smart TV, which
model television are you using?

Just curious.

I hope you are well and are enjoying your new television.

RE: Apple TV Question

2021-07-27 Thread Richard Turner
I do not think that is possible, unless you can install the Stream app from
Comcast on the Apple TV.
I believe their accessibility people may know the answer quickly.

Subject: Apple TV Question

We just purchased the Apple TV device, and have it working. This is the most
recent model.

We don't seem to be able to access the Xfinity channels from the Apple TV
remote. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Re: Apple TV Question

2021-07-27 Thread Mary Otten
I do not believe there is an app for Xfinity for Apple TV. I just looked, and
Siri couldn’t find anything. There is one for the fire TV, but it’s kind of
lousy in terms of accessibility. The streaming app for the phone is much better
accessibility wise.
