Hi all, I took the Seeing Eye GPS app for a quick walk around my neighborhood to see how well it performed. I walked about one mile, and took a different route back. It worked well, although like most GPS apps it seemed to use a lot of battery, over twenty percent in the one mile walk. The interface of the app is simple and easy to understand. Entering an address is made easy because the state and city you are in are already entered, so only the address number and street need to be entered. If you are going to another city, however, you will need to change that field. I started by searching for a point of intrest and starting a route. The app uses voice over for most of the announcements, but does have another voice that chimes in occasionally. The directions were clear and given with ample lead time. As I approached intersections it would announce the street name and the intersection type, I. E. Fore way, and the street direction. Also, as I walked the app announced points of intrest as I passed by. On the way back, I tried the route to home option, which opened a drop down menu with various options including one that is poorly labeled. My wife told me it said multi modal, which voice over didn't understand, so I relabeled this button multi mode. Over all I think this is a great start, but there are a few things I'd like to see in the future. I'd like to see the ability to walk a virtual route, as I was able to do with my human ware Trekker.. After taxes the one year subscription cost over seventy five dollars. It sounds like a lot, but considering my old Trekker was fifteen hundred dollars seven years ago, it doesn't seem too expensive. If you figure it out, it comes to about twenty one cents a day for the one year subscription. And only about thirteen cents a day with the three year subscription, it seems reasonable to me. , the more people bitch complain about its price the more likely the app is to go away. Which then wouldn't be right for those of us who have already paid the price for the app. If you don't like the price of the app, don't buy it. It to me is like a ford verses a BMW. Windows verses a Mac. Beer verses Champagne. Don't complain about the cost of the BMW, the Mac or Champagne if you don't want one, can't afford one, don't buy one. But, don't begrudge those who do want to buy one. Me personally, I'm pretty good at drinkin' beer. But, for those of you who want Champagne, I don't begrudge you. I would agree that it would be a great idea for them to have a trial period so that people can see what the app is like what it would do for them. Rather than having to buy the whole thing up front. I'd also agree that perhaps a monthly cost would be a good idea for those who can't or don't want to afford the whole cost up front. , yes as a matter of full disclosure, I have already purchased the app. Just one mans opinion, , yes, sometimes I do get paid for it. - Original Message - From: Chuck Dean chuckd...@icloud.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, July 02, 2013 22:04 Subject: Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed! Really? Are you serious? Stealing money out of blind peoples pockets? Greed? Do you feel that the grocery store is stealing money out of your pocket? Your cell carrier? Any other business that you do business with? Where do blind people get off thinking that they should be given everything for free? This is the sort of atitude that gives blind persons a bad name makes all of us look bad. I'll probably be chastized by the list owners or mods for my comments. However, that is the price I'm willing to pay to make my point. No one owes you anything whether you're blind, sighted, left-handed, right-handed, etc. If you want it, you buy it, if you don't then don't. I thik a critique of the app is good, because just because something is available deosn't mean it will work for us all. Take glucometers for the blind diabetics out there. Medicare will provide a talking glucometer free of charge. But if you miss your reading the first time it is announced, then you are SOL. Funny. I figured she just didn't want to be ripped off. As has been said on here and elsewhere. Navigon is a one-time payment, and is pretty much exactly as accessible as the Seeing Eye app. They also don't charge you for updates. The Trecker, while more expensive, also doesn't charge you for map updates. And if we're being honest, the Seeing Eye app doesn't need to pay for its access to, let's say, foursquare information, which is where it pulls its points of interest from. With the greatest of respect, I disagree with the note below. The seeing eye application does provide additional description of intersections and actually provides true turn by turn directions that are usable by a blind person in a fashion that is much better than the other applications. For example, if you're doing a pedestrian route with this application, you're more likely to end up on the right side of the street to reach your destination then you are with some of the other GPS applications. In addition, if you do want to receive map updates on Navigon, You do have to pay an extra fee. Thanks. My Breeze or Navigon I don't have to pay yearly for it's use or the upgrades when they happen. Yes, the Seeing Eye app is another option for people to try out and it's a valid argument for people to have in regards to the yearly price if they already have something that is a one time cost that does the same thing. For me I can say it was a waist of 70 bucks since it does what I already have. Also, the maps that the Seeing Eye is using is the same ones that the other companies use and it's also pulling info from foursquare which a lot of apps seem to be doing these days as well. So from what I've seen in looking at it from what I already have and use, it's not better, but the same. How likely do you think it is you get 18 years of service out of your Breeze without updates? I used to have a Trekker Maestro and Humanware told me map updates were $100 back then. Really? I never have, and I've used the thing for 2 years. Now, if there's a map you don't have, then sure you'll have to pay for it. But if you don't need the map, there's a good reason not to buy it. But no, any updated maps I've pulled down have been at no cost to me. And as for descriptiveness, they're descriptive enough if you actually pay attention to where you're going. I've gotten me from A, to B, to C using that app with virtually no problem. This needs to stop. They can charge what they want and that doesn't make it greed. All of us have an IPhone or other I device and rarely does anyone accuse Apple of being greedy .. and how many billions do they have in cash. As one who has received 4 dogs from the Seeing Eye over the past 17 years, costing me a total of $300 I'd say that they are anything but greedy. Hopefully this app takes off and helps them to offset the cost to them of providing guide dogs for those of us who choose to use them. Let's get back to talking about the right thing on this list. The reason why you don't pay full price for an iPhone is because your provider subsidises the purchase by making you sign a 2-year contract where you commit to paying a high monthly price for your phone service so in essence it is not a one-time cost because if you decide to cancel your contract after 6 months you will have to buy out the phone. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of James Homuth Sent: Wednesday, July 03, 2013 6:13 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed! Hi Bob, Fresh Maps give you quarterly map updates as opposed to yearly map updates. RE: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
Hi Krister, There are apps available which in combination do most of what the Seeing Eye app does, but if those were all as good and complete than why were so many of us looking forward to the Seeing Eye app? People have very different needs and expectations when it comes to navigation apps and devices. May already owns a Trekker Breeze and for anybody who does have one of those I can totally understand why the Seeing Eye app is not as attractive. Of course you have to carry 2 devices, but the advantage also is that you aren't using up your iPhone's battery. Oh, and none of the existing apps, not a single one, tells you automatically about intersections, e.g. if it is a 4-way, 3-way etc. I always found this a very useful feature when I had my Windows Smartphone with MobileSpeak and MobileGeo. It is interesting how often I heard somebody saying If only there was an app for the iPhone as good as MobileGeo. MobileGeo which required MobileSpeak to function, was $800 or $900 and MobileSpeak added another $300. I think we all forget what we used to pay for these devices, only a year ago a Trekker Breeze was still $900 and only now it's on sale for $500 (Humanware lists it regularly at $700) here in Canada and I think to a large extend that price drop is because of devices like the iPhone and apps like Seeing Eye which are a much more cost effective solution in the long run even if they are not for everybody. OK, this is it for me in this discussion as well. I will most definitely buy the Seeing Eye app because I am confident that it will work well and be improved down the road. Oh, incidently, if Sendero had chosen to sell it outright for $200 with no subscription cost there would have been just as much outrage about it. Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
Hi, actually this isn't a Sendero thing, but an Apple thing. Over the last year, many apps have switched to this model where you get the app, which might be an ad version, or a disabled version. Then you do in-app purchased to unlock things. Dice World is an example. You just get one app, then if you want to add things to it, like get rid of ads, you either play and win many games, or you do an in-app purchase and get rid of them. Sendero's Seeing App is the same thing in that you get the free app, then depending on which subscription you want, you do an in-app purchase. Not misleading at all. So, let's stop harping about how evil Sendero supposedly is. -- Raul A. Gallegos Soft kitty, Warm kitty, Little ball of fur. It wouldn't be a misleading review either since I used the app just enough to know there is no monthly subscription. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Mary Otten Sent: Tuesday, July 02, 2013 11:06 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed! Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
James, er, excuse me, Navigon offers the same level of access, and you base that on what? I have both, and therefore I am basing this on factual knowledge, Navigon which I used for years is not on the same level as Seeing Eye in terms of accessibility to O/M information, they are not even in the same league. Navigon's buttons are labelled sure, and I can use it to get me from A to B, but with no intersection data, no POI read aloud data, no intersections I pass by on the route data and no 4 Square integration. Seeing Eye uses 3 sources, two of which are free sources the third NavTeq is not and is a paid solution. I also fail to see why people believe Navigon is giving them map updates for free, Navigon App updates are free, but, that is the app alone and not the map data. This is an additional on top in app purchase. If you just download the free updates to Navigon all you are getting is the app itself updated and not the map data. Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
All decisions involving money require some thought. Not all of my sighted frinds drive BMW's. For that matter, not all of them have iPhones. At the risked of being flamed into a tiny bit of ash, the iPhone is quite expensive. In fact, all i devices are rather spendy. However, most people on this list have chosen to purchase them. No one has to have GPS in order to be mobile. People have been using white canes or guide dogs for years. Therefore either buy the app or don't! Blind people in general seem to be either under employed or unemployed. Certainly that's not true for all blind people, but it seems true for the majority. So, you make decisions as to how to spend your money. So decide whether or not you want this app or not! It's really rather simple! Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
Everyone has to decide for themselves whether an app is worth the price being asked for or not. I know some people feel they can get similar functionality from less expensive apps or apps with a different payment method and that's great! For others, this app has features they're willing to pay for. This is no different than any other set of apps in the App Store, note taking apps, calendar apps, PIM apps and so on. There's a lot of choices and a lot of prices and it's good that we have another option. What I don't understand though about this thread is why some people think others care about whether they're willing to pay for this or any other app. I'd like information on the app, reviews, podcasts, a trial period, comparisons with other apps and so on. I'll decide for myself if I think it's worth the money or not. I don't really care if someone else in a different situation thinks it's worth the price or not. One correction, if you want to receive frequent map updates from Navigon, you need to pay a fee. However, if you are happy with quarterly updates, there is no extra fee. I wonder which company is more greedy here and I also wonder whether the maps on your Breeze will be as up-to-date in 3 years as the ones the Seeing Eye app uses. Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
I was loathe to weigh in on this conversation, but judging from all the posts I’ve read on this topic, I think your anger and frustrations are being misdirected. The fact is, the bad guy here is Apple, not Sendero. If Apple would allow for refunds and not force a person to buy or suffer, then it would be fine, since people could purchase an app, and, like in a great deal of cases us blind folks find ourselves in, the app isn’t accessible, or doesn’t work well for us, we could then obtain a refund, sort of like a seven day grace period. So, in essence, it isn’t Sendero who comes up with this policy, it’s Apple, and so you have to live with that, not force Sendero to go against a major company like Apple. If you want Apple to listen, write to them, not Sendero, and certainly not to this list. That's not fair. I haven't read anywhere here that Mary Ann wanted something for nothing. Nor did anyone else in this thread, at least not that I know of. If there is ever a trial period for the Seeing Eye app, I will take advantage of it and then decide if the app fills my needs better than those I already have. Since there is currently no trial version, I will not purchase the app at this time. I will not pay $69 plus tax for an app if I can't try it first. I bought a human rare ware Trekker 7 years ago that did little more than this app. It cost me fifteen hundred dollars. If you do the math, after subscribing to this app and paying the taxes, it works out to less than twenty two cents a day. That is a small price to pay for something that is customized for a specific portion of the population. Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. I'm not sure I'm going to buy it, and I would like to see a way to demo it before purchasing it, but depending on what it does, $70 a year, or less if you go with a three year plan, doesn't seem unreasonable to me. I haven't seen their business plan, but I doubt anyone is going to get rich from this product at this price. RE: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
Hi Mary Anne, Let me ask you one question: If you feel this way, why did you even download and buy the one-year subscription to start with? It's not like Sendero forced you to do so. You could go and pay $59 for Navigon North America, then $15 or whatever it is for BlindSquare for a total of $75 and have a workable solution even though it wouldn't be as good as the Seeing Eye app. This totally reminds me about the uproar some people felt when Sendero dared to charge $5 for their LookAround app a few years ago, the outrage some people felt then I think was downright ridiculous and while $70 is more than $5, like I said, don't buy it if you don't want it. You are incorrect assuming that I bought a subscription. I downloaded the app and when I found out how outrageous and costly it was, i certainly did not buy a subscription. I immediately went to the rating portion and told them how I feel. The app has been deleted from my phone. By the way, the apps you refer to are a one time fee. I've had my Navigon for 2 years and have only paid the cost of the app. I works just fine. A few bucks every now and then to upgrade the maps is reasonable, but certainly the price they want for a yearly sub is highway robbery. I just don't have that kind of money anyway, they wouldn't get it if I did and there are other good alternatives. RE: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
And your Breeze was how much? I believe $800 is about right? If you buy the Seeing Eye app on a 3-year subscription, that means $800 divided by $130 = 6.15 which means I can renew my Seeing Eye subscription 6 times for the price of the Breeze and at 3 years per renewal this means 18 years. How likely do you think it is you get 18 years of service out of your Breeze without updates? I used to have a Trekker Maestro and Humanware told me map updates were $100 back then. I wonder which company is more greedy here and I also wonder whether the maps on your Breeze will be as up-to-date in 3 years as the ones the Seeing Eye app uses. Anyhow, I think this discussion is pretty well exhausted. I doubt any argument will change your hostile attitude towards Sendero and while you and everybody else is of course entitled to their opinion, I think if you did look at it objectively the numbers speak for themselves. So, after you pay the tax on your Trekker breeze, you will pay the equivalent of 12 years of subscription if you used the three year subscription plan. Personally, I hope technology will advance exponentially in that amount of time, making both devices obsolete. Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. Let me make sure I understand what is being discussed here. I could spend $500, and buy a trekker breeze, a device where the maps are only updated infrequently, and where there is only one map source, or I could buy approximately 12 years of service on an iOS app, that uses multiple map sources, and which will most likely have frequent updates. RE: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
Hi Mich, There is nothing misleading since if you didn't know about the subscription this simply means you didn't read the full app description and information. Right after where it says the app is free, the release date and customer ratings it says the following: Top In-App Purchases 1. Three Year Subscription$129.99 2. One Year Subscription$69.99 OK, so I was remembering the old price for the Breeze, but even at $500 I cam buy 4 3-year subscription renewals (4 times $130 = $520) which means 12 years of up-to-date coverage. When did you last get a map update for your Trekker? Was it free? OK, I know this is actively defending the Seeing Eye app which I am sure has its shortcomings. But I really dislike it if people bash a product which took an enormous amount of dedication and resources to develop simply because it's not given to them for virtually nothing. How about all that HUmanware greed, I mean how dare they charge the original adopters of the Breeze $800 or $900 and now they are :giving it away for little more than half that. Re: The Seeing Eye app, greed, greed, greed!
You need to catch up with times. The updates for maps with the breeze are free. The Breeze is a one time cost. Also, the breeze and it's counter part the mystro did not run in the same price range. The Seeing Eye App does the exact same thing as Navigon and my Breeze.
