I am positive I was not using VoiceOver to read the screen with the Kindle
app. I know this, because my VoiceOver speech rate and speak Screen speech
rate are completely different. They were both speaking at the same time
without any issues, too; I was just reading along as happy as could be (I
can't wait to do it again later!)

I Did this, it read the status bar,  that's it.  So the question remains, 
what is speakscreen? What is it meant to do, what else is it meant to do 
beyond read down the screen like before?

common sense and various other courtesies. I hope you're not 
disparaging Jonathan's podcast or his other contributions to this list 
and the books he's written. Some people prefer podcasts. I'm not one of 
them myself, but I do respect and appreciate the time it takes to record 
and publish a podcast. Remember this is a list of volunteers and not 
paid support people. I appreciate those who contribute in the fashion 
they can, and don't chastise them for not always giving me exactly waht 
I want in the format I want it.

I am positive I was not using VoiceOver to read the screen with the Kindle
app. I know this, because my VoiceOver speech rate and speak Screen speech
rate are completely different. They were both speaking at the same time
without any issues, too; I was just reading along as happy as could be (I

About conflict between speek screen and dictation if one cannot start dictation
with 2 finger double-tap it's also possible to just locate the dictate button
to the left of the space bar and activate it with a 1 finger double-tap

When I do speak screen a few times, after the second time, it doesn't work. I
swipe down with 2 fingers from the status bar, the pause, fast forward and all
are displayed, but there is no speech. As I said, it works for around 2 times,
then stops speaking when envoked more than twice.

Thanks so much for this excellent tip and audio demo. This is just one more
tool to tuck away in our bag of tricks when we need screen reading done on a
locked device in an app not supporting this.

 

I wanted to comment on an issue I experienced after following your demo and
testing the speak screen feature. I opened an iBook and Alex started reading
just as in your demo when I asked Siri to speak screen. I then decided I
wanted Australian Karen as my screen speaking voice so went through the
steps to select her. When I asked Siri to speak screen after this change,
VoiceOver would read the page number footer of the iBook and nothing else.
This was done with my VO default voice and not Karen. I tried to change back
to Alex and to my default Samantha but kept getting the same issue. I
finally did a hard reset of my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1.3 and this corrected
the problem.

 

Something else I noted is that the screen speaking voice sounds slightly
different than with VoiceOver and its volume is louder on my iPhone. These
are minor differences and the minimize volume button on my earpods let me
set the volume where I wanted it.

Aha, thanks Neal, good to know why it was working in Kindle for one other
person but not me. There may not be too many benefits in using it with Kindle
if you can't lock your screen, other perhaps than it's not going to be
interrupted when you get a notification which I guess is still pretty cool.

voice over but do not lock the screen. The pages in Kindle are turned. However, 
if you lock the screen, Jonathan’s warning does apply. Kindle stops at the end 
of the current page. I wonder how this works with the BARD reader and others? 
I’ll have to play more today after I get my new iPhone 6 which I am about to go

Jonathan. Thanks for this. One note. I can get this feature to work in Kindle 
as well. What I do is to do a three finger double tap to silence Voiceover, and 
the speek screen does turn the page in the Kindle app.

Hi Jonathan and others,

I am positive I was not using VoiceOver to read the screen with the Kindle app.
I know this, because my VoiceOver speech rate and speak Screen speech rate are
completely different. They were both speaking at the same time without any
issues, too; I was just reading along as happy as could be (I can't wait to do
it again later!)

wrote them requesting nicely that they implement better page scroll in

Anyone testing screen reader: 
I touched the status bar and then swiped down with 2 fingers. The voice that 
came on was Karen I think. Can I change the voice to the IOS voice or even 
Alex? Does this work all over? I used for email so far, but I think it would be 
great for kindle books or iBooks because it seems louder than the default. By 
the way, what is the difference between this mode of reading and just swiping 
down on the screen. I tried to hear the podcast but could not. Might be a great 
podcast for applevis. I sure didn't know about this.

I wanted to comment on an issue I experienced after following your demo and 
testing the speak screen feature. I opened an iBook and Alex started reading 
just as in your demo when I asked Siri to speak screen. I then decided I 
wanted Australian Karen as my screen speaking voice so went through the steps 
to select her. When I asked Siri to speak screen after this change, VoiceOver 
would read the page number footer of the iBook and nothing else. This was done 
with my VO default voice and not Karen. I tried to change back to Alex and to 
my default Samantha but kept getting the same issue. I finally did a hard reset 
of my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1.3 and this corrected the problem.
 
Something else I noted is that the screen speaking voice sounds slightly 
different than with VoiceOver and its volume is louder on my iPhone. These are 
minor differences and the minimize volume button on my earpods let me set the 
volume where I wanted it.

Jonathan, When did this take effect? My wife was able to play my audio last 
week before she signed up with an account. So, this must have been recent. Does 
this also mean that if one clicks on your feed, they can no longer download the 
file which also used to be possible?

I wanted to comment on an issue I experienced after following your demo and 
testing the speak screen feature. I opened an iBook and Alex started reading

to select her. When I asked Siri to speak screen after this change, VoiceOver 
would read the page number footer of the iBook and nothing else. This was done 
with my VO default voice and not Karen. I tried to change back to Alex and to 
my default Samantha but kept getting the same issue. I finally did a hard reset 
of my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1.3 and this corrected the problem.

 

Something else I noted is that the screen speaking voice sounds slightly 
different than with VoiceOver and its volume is louder on my iPhone. These are 
minor differences and the minimize volume button on my earpods let me set the 
volume where I wanted it.

You can command Siri to speak screen while Voiceover is on and do a 
two-finger-double-tap to pause it. You can also lock the screen while reading 
from a web page or iBooks. It will keep reading in the background while you get 
notifications, etc. or do other tasks on the device.

Thanks for letting us know of this app. My city is in the list and I'm
going to check this out. From the iTunes page you linked to, it looks
like the app has a widget, which I have not yet seen in a transit app.
Also, if the stop notification is good giving you enough warning of
the pending stop, and not alerting you to the stop when you pull up to
it, then that would be awesome. I'm not asking for much here, grin.
iMove did this a lot to me, even if I set the alert distance to the
most, I nearly always got the alert when we pulled up.

with 2 finger double-tap it's also possible to just locate the dictate button 
to the left of the space bar and activate it with a 1 finger double-tap

and to my default Samantha but kept getting the same issue. I finally did a
hard reset of my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1.3 and this corrected the problem.

Something else I noted is that the screen speaking voice sounds slightly
different than with VoiceOver and its volume is louder on my iPhone. These
are minor differences and the minimize volume button on my earpods let me set
the volume where I wanted it.

Kindle as well. What I do is to do a three finger double tap to silence

The screen speak feature is invoked by doing a 2 finger swipe down on the
screen. I'm not sure how you use it with voiceover, as I usually have voice
over turned off when I'm using screen speak. It basically read the content of
whatever is on the screen in an app. For example if you're in iBooks it will
start reading whatever book you have open. Hope this helps

A tip for you. Touch anywhere on the status bar before doing the two 
finger swipe down to invoke speak screen. I'm not sure where I got this 
from but it works for me so try that.

them requesting nicely that they implement better page scroll in with speak 
screen. I encourage everyone to do the same.

What a nice thing that after all these years of working with the iPhone I can

hello,

I have just started to use the speak screen command and discovered something 
fairly interesting:to wit, if I try and read a book in, four example, 
iLike2ReadPro, the speak screen command will not work it merely says that no 
content was found to be read.my books in iLike2ReadPro are all text 
format.ordinarily voice-over gestures work perfectly in this app.so, I am 
wondering why the speak screen, and can't see anything in these files.does 
anyone have some sort of technical explanation for this?
