Actually...

Here's how I do it. From the main dir of the xnv source code, I issue a make
clean then ./configure with no switches (defaults work fine here) then a make.
I then move to the Xvnc directory and issue a make World. Then back to the main

Works for me... Try this and if it fails again, post all the text leading up to

My Way:

In the main dir (vnc_unixsrc) i found no configure or Makefile, also
i move into the Xvnc dir and run ./configure and then make. And i
become the error.

Re: UltraVNC is born...

2002-12-05 Thread Greg Breland
TightVNC has been MUCH better than the stock VNC from AT&T for a couple of years
now. RealVNC was a great step toward catching up with TightVNC, but it has a long
way to go. Although RealVNC is just as good as Tight when running over a LAN,
nothing touches TightVNC over low bandwidth connections, including PcAnyWhere.
Terminal Services and Citrix are the only faster options.

RealVNC is usable over a cable connection, but TightVNC is much much faster and is
even usable over dialup.

I almost exclusivly use the Linux TightVNC client and have never had it crash on me.

VNC ports

2002-12-05 Thread Brett Smith
Hello All;

This is a feature request for any takers

We use VNC for demo purposes using the web browser.

What we find restrictive is the in-ability to control both the ports
that VNC listens on a individual basis. In some cases a customer has
only certain ports open on the firewall(which are not the default 5800 /
5900) but for example ports 80 and 21. You cannot currently modify the
values for each port on a seperate basis. Changing the display
increments the web portion and so on

What would be well received is graphical functionality in the VNC Server
to configure seperate port values for each component. This would enable
us to specify very different port values and suit to potential clients
firewall enviornments.

For example if a customer has ports 80 and 21 open to them we could run
the VNC server on 21 for the display and 80 for the web browser...and so
on.

Thanx for your time

_

TightVNC has major problems in its linux client. It dies at the most
unpredictable times...

As for sending money... I have, in a small way, financially supported RealVNC.
RealVNC is the most reliable, stable of all the VNC's available. And I've tested
all the available vnc's that support linux. In fact, I'm so impressed with
RealVNC that I go out of my way to spread it to my customers and encourage them
to financially support the RealVNC effort.

Nothing even comes close in the most important areas of vnc operations as named
above. Everything else is glitter, eye candy... a page out of the MicroSoft way
of programming. Anything to keep a version number ahead of the pack... Useless
in a work environment.

Cheers.

Inch screen and 2 x 24 Inch Screens). From a remote PC I can only see the

Is there some way to view both screens from VNC?

Re: UltraVNC is born... Device Tunneling - Plugin sustructure ?

2002-12-05 Thread Tobias Gogolin
Hi VNC connoisseurs
Just yesterday I was thinking how nice it would be to connect to a machine
and have it that than each machine can see the others devices as if local...
And to make it an open plug-in arquitecture so that these functionalities
can be written and plugged without having to change the original VNC too
much...

I am sure it has been thought about before and possibly most of the
subfunctionality exists somehow...
Just imagine connecting to a remote vnc machine and then printing directly
from that machine to a device that is local (or locally accessible) for
example in windows ?
Isn't there some plug and play interface that could be extended to support
this ?

Now that would be some Ultra VNC

cheers

Hi,

I installed VNC Server on an HP-UX 10.20 workstation. I modified the

and services files to reflect the application's settings. After that I
restarted the inetd services on the machine.

While I was on the machine, I did a netstat -a and the vnc ports were
listening
for connections. When I tried to connect to the server from a Windows 2000
machine via the VNCViewer,

I got a could not connect to server error message. The UNIX system has
telnet
disabled but does allow SSH connections. The Windows workstation has an SSH2
client application (QVTNet) loaded on it,

and I can connect to HP-UX box using it. I tried connecting with the SSH
client
and then starting the VNC viewer and entering the FQDN and then the IP
address.
Neither worked. I am going over

the steps to connect to the system using VNC over SSH but I wanted to know
if
you had any ideas? Thanks.

THey look reasnoable, I don't dive into details like dots and commas.

I see you use the `sys` account for Xvnc, that's reasonable.

ONce you replaced the files, restart inetd (on HP in `/sbin/init.d/inetd stop
;
/sbin/init.d/inetd start `). If well configured, inetd does not complain and
all
goes well, connect to the vncserver with `vncviewre hpux-vnc:53` for a new
view
to the machine.

Do a `netstat -a` on the machine to see the opened ports.

Skip the vncpassword and stuff. Best to setup as on
http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp
 . Only need to edit
/etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf accordingly. Minor details: use user 'sys'
instead of 'nobody'. See `man inetd.conf` for details.

Send some money to the developers of Tight to improve VNC or submit some code.
Don't complain when developers make some awsome changes to VNC and release it for

Also, besides file transfer, XOR encoding, toolbars and Back Buffer acceleration,
most of the changes recently done in any version of VNC is to workaround the

VNC, Linux, OpenOffice

2002-12-05 Thread Steve Blinkhorn
I have recently installed RedHat Linux 8.0 on my notebook machine, and
have a use for the OpenOffice suite that it comes with. I routinely
use VNC to access this machine when I'm in my office.

If I start vncserver on the notebook while X-Windows is running
directly on its display, then an attempt to fire up one of the
OpenOffice tools results in the application being displayed on the
notebook's own screen, not the screen where I have vncviewer running.
If X-Windows is not running on the notebook, then things work as you
might expect. I haven't yet got two instances of an OpenOffice
application to run over VNC to separate windows on my desktop box
(which runs BSD/OS).

I am vaguely thinking of having a Linux server available for staff who
want to use applications only available on Linux: does anyone know
where the above behaviour comes from? and whether it can be
modified?

Did you read the documentation before trying to compile the source?? It says
that to compile Xvnc, you must invoke the makfile with the command: make World

You mean

./configure
make World ?

It's the same error.

This will only work if you got someway to redirect the connection at the
gateway pc

my prefered method is to install an SSH server on the gateway pc it
will allow you to do the redirect, and encrypt all the messages going
over the internet

I had the same problem but with Win98se and Windows VNC server
3.3.5. I was puzzled to read that the problem was supposedly
fixed in 3.3.5!

I looked at the above link and couldn't see the problem in the
known bugs list. However, when I looked in the 3.3.5 list ...

  http://www.realvnc.com/3.3.5-known-bugs.html

it was there!

  Date 11 Nov 2002
  ID16
Platform/Program Windows 95/98/ME server Shift with mouse
click, or arrow keys etc does not work
  WorkaroundNone
  StatusFixed in 3.3.6

I have since upgraded to Windows VNC server 3.3.6 and all is
now fine and dandy.

I'm sure folks were trying to be helpful, but the contents of
the archives really had me confused. I hope this posting is
useful to others.

Re: R: pc nertwork internet sharing

2002-12-05 Thread Jerry Westrick
Hello Andrea:

FIrst off, don't give up, we'll get you the information you need...
Although it may take a while 8-)

Here goes a little drawing to show what I understood:

 INTERNET
|
| 151.133.10.55
 +--+---+
 | Internet PC |
 +--+---+
| 199.168.33.01
|
| 199.168.33.?? +--+
+-+ PC 1 |
| +--+
|
| 199.168.33.?? +--+
+-+ PC 2 |
  +--+

I understand that vnc conections between PC-1 and PC-2 work when the
internet sharing is off.

And that the vnc connections does NOT work when internet sharing is on.

And lastly you have a more questions which I did not understand...8-(

ANSWERS

VNC requires a working TCP/IP system. when the TCP/IP system works then
you get a connection. When it doesn't you don't. What I think your
problem is that the TCP/IP is not configure correctly when you have
internet sharing on! To test this you can do the follwoing:

1) start internet sharing
2) in DOS-BOX try to ping each machine with "PING 199.168.33.xx".
3) do this on all machines...

If this does not work then you have a TCP/IP problem, which must be
fixed before VNC can work.

COMMENTS:
a correct ping looks like this:
==

C:\Documents and Settings\jerry>ping 10.0.0.198

Pinging 10.0.0.198 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 10.0.0.198: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.0.0.198: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.0.0.198: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.0.0.198: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 10.0.0.198:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

An incorrect ping looks like this:
===
C:\Documents and Settings\jerry>ping 10.0.0.177

Pinging 10.0.0.177 with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 10.0.0.177:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

I hope this helps a little

R: pc nertwork internet sharing

2002-12-05 Thread Andrea Demartini
I use VNC on both computers (VNC server and VIEWER) with Windows 98

Problem 1
1. on both the computers are qualified the "Sharing logon to Intertnet"
(software supplied from Microsoft for small local nets).
2. when I connect myself with viewer the VNC to server VNC if I have
qualified the Sharing logon to Internet I do not succeed to approach to you,
if the disabilito one I succeed to approach to you.

Problem 2
If I want to approach computer n. 2 of my small LAN as I must make?
I must have assets on the main computer that approaches to Internet the
server of VNC or solo on the PC n.2?
the "Sharing logon to Intertnet" must be active? Which IP address tax from
the viever and the serveur?

Example:
the main computer when they are connected in net has two IP addresses:
1. that one of the net card, as an example 199.168.33.01
2. that dynamic one of Internet, as an example the 151.133.10.55

computer n. 2 of mine lan has only the address of the net card, as an
example 199.168.33.01

With a viever of VNC I have tried to set up 151.133.10.55:2 as an example OR
151.133.10.55:3 etc but do not work.

Give an aid to me? Thanks.
