inet Bliink almost perpetually on the blink

2003-05-15 Thread Michael Hawkins
Whoever named the Bliink series of accounts "Bliink" must have been in the
know.
Mine rarely works.

I sent an email yesterday (Wednesday) because I could not conect using my
Bliin 256 account. The green adsl link light was out. I tried unplugging the
modem for a couple of minutes and rebooting the computer. The problem
remained. I logged on using dial-up and checked the faults page, but no fault
was reported. No fault has since been reported in iinet's fault emails. I have
not had a reply to my email. The same problem hapened again a couple of times
today. This is most unsatisfactory.

I have asked inet respond to yesterday's email and this email by fax,and said
that failure to do so will indicate to me that iinet is either not prepared to
or not able to provide a reliable isp service to me.
Service has been appalling since 10 March and iinet has not done anything to
effectively redress the situation.

Does anyone know the address of the organisation that I can complain to?
Thanks,

Michael Hawkins.

I have a feeling that someone will suggest you download the system software
from the Apple web site.

An alternative is to order a replacement system CD from MacRabbit at
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~koala1/macrabbit/maccds.html. I checked the
site and they have a LC520 system CD for $15.

Good luck

Dear WAMUGgers

Ok Matt, then try this bit that I've just frivolously posted to GMUG

"I thought this might reassure you, just as you've put down a
deposit... not!

"I actually like the cover on the latest Aust MacWorld with the Apple
horn button, mice lights on the dash and great gauges. I'm not sure if
it would sell though.

"Consider this press release: "Apple releases new Ocelot iR-T with
Firewire accelerator, gearshift and steering. More responsive than a
BMW iDrive and you'll never get locked in! A new safety feature is the
spinning beachball of death, easily viewable at the lights. Just wait
until it stops spinning to cross safely. Software Update V6.04 removes
the annoying bug of having the iR-T stop moving before it has started,
simply to update new windscreen wiper preferences. Now you can drive
and download at the same time while running the old preferences. The
new ones will self-install in the mall, as you browse the iTunes Store.

Re: iiNet - SPAM and Webmail

2003-05-15 Thread Richard M.

Hi Kelly and all,

Yes, I've noticed a remarkable increase in the amount of spam over the last
week or so from iiNet.

To add insult to injury, I've found that their Webmail program has a nasty
little bug which deletes email from your inbox when using the "back" button
on the browser.

They have a red disclaimer on most pages about using the "back" button - but
do nothing to remove the button from the screen. Unfortunately this
disclaimer goes away if you view an attachment on-line - when you are forced
to use the back button.

My first report to iiNet support was responded to with a curt "we can't fix
this, just don't use the back button", but I don't believe this is the
correct answer for support to be telling their customers.

I mean, let's face it - the "back" button has been on browsers since Mosaic,
and other web sites generally encourage you to use it - this is a standard
feature on a browser, and it's kind of akin to saying "yea, don't use File,
Quit as it will wipe half the files of your hard disk" ... Pfft, what a
crock of.

I have asked for the location of an alternative version of Webmail, as I'm
anticipating buying a new machine in the near future, and would like to
administer my emails from work so there are not a billion to download when I
configure the machine and finally connect up to the internet.

After suggesting this was a bug - they responded with the fact that it was a
known issue, but there was no ETA on the fix. I outlined my "buying new
machine" scenario as above and asked whether it was anticipated if it would
be rectified prior to this time, and I got another email saying that this
wasn't an outstanding issue

I'm finding iiNet support very frustrating at the moment - if it's an issue,
why can't they simply spawn a Webmail session in a new window (as they
already do), but remove the navigation tools - particularly if they have
such a destructive property, and disallow right clicking on the page (I
access Webmail from one of those PC things)???

Has anyone else experienced this? Or am I just getting grumpier as I get
older?

Richard

LC 520 system disks

2003-05-15 Thread Daniel Forsdyke
Hi

I have a friend with an old Mac LC520. At present he can't get it working
so I brought it home to see if I could manage something!!

He was given the LC, but it did not come with its system install disks. It
had been working find for word processing etc, but recently crashed and now
will not start up.

Having tried to start it last night, it currently powers up and sits there
with a flashing question mark on disk image.

First attempt was to tried and boot off my Diskwarrior CD, which has system
7.1 on it. I ended up with the "Sad Mac" logo and sound.

Next attempt was a System 6.0.5 install disk, and then System Tools disk
(6.0.5), which would not work.

I then tried burning System 7.1 onto a CD from the Diskwarrior CD and after
failing to start, I now am unable to eject the CD Caddy to remove the disk!!

I have also tried zapping the PRAM with no change to the flashing "?" mark.

Mactracker states that this particular model only runs on Mac OS 7.1 to
7.6.1, but I have no idea to get this on disk.

Other Mactracker stats are:
Mac LC 520
Motorola 68030, 25mhz
Mother board RAM = 4 MB
Max RAM = 36 MB (don't know how much is in this machine)

My main question/s:

Does anybody have install disks for this computer, or system 7 in general.

Or, does anyone know where I might find them online.

Is there anything else that I could try with the software that I already
have.

I currently have the following:

Emac 700mhz G4 running Mac OS X with CD-RW/DVD-ROM

Powerbook 1400cs running Mac OS 8.1

Powerbook 1400cs running Mac OS 8.6

System 6.0.5 install disks and disk tools

Diskwarrior 2.1 CD with Mac OS 7.1, OS 8.1 and OS 9.1 on disk

Help greatly appreciated!

Regards
Daniel

Netscape Calendar can read/write vCal files and should be available

You might be able to find other PC calendaring programs with vCal

If you had a Palm you could iSync it with iCal and HotSync it with

Other options include Now Up To Date, ,

An associate of mine here is trying to create a database of all their

Basic info is name / contact details and about 10 standard questions.
Total staff are about 50.

Anyone recommend a suitable solution under OS X?

I suspect they will ultimately be exporting (not live) the database

There's always MySQL with PHP, but you need someone who knows what
they're doing to run it.

Failing that, AppleWorks has a minimal database built in, with the
advantage that you can export it to FileMaker relatively easily when
they decide the project is worthwhile enough to spend some money on.

Have fun,

iinet vs. TGP mail server

2003-05-15 Thread Greg Hosking

Hi all,

a question of curiosity: having recently switched from OS9/entourage to
OSX/mail.app, one thing annoyed me: despite having mail.app set to
"remove copy from server after receiving message > right away" on both
my home & work machines, i still got all emails downloaded on both
machines when checking mail. (this did not happen with entourage/OS9)

having switched to TPG, this does not happen. (ie if i download an
email, at work, it doesn't come in when i check at home) Is this
something to do with the way the respective mail servers handle
mail.app requests?

just curious

Re: Copy Protection

2003-05-15 Thread Meg Travers
I am furious with EMI's Copy Control!!

To add insult to injury, my favorite band (Afro Celt Sound System) have just
released
a new album. They're on Peter Gabriel's Real World label, but that's
distributed in
Australia by Virgin/EMI, so guess what - it's Copy Controlled and apparently
won't
play on a Mac.

Apple have a tech note on the problems here:

The band are peeved about this too and this album was in fact recorded on
Macintoshes. They are asking fans to send emails to their management so they
can
take the issue up with EMI, but the reality is, they're pretty small fry.

So, if you're looking to complain about not being able to play a CD, by all
means
contact EMI, the ACCC but also get onto the bands website and complain there
too.

For the record, this disc did work on my 12" powerbook with combo drive running
OS
X.2.5. However, it bothers me that it might not play on some CD playing device
I
might own in the future. Will I be required to purchase "EMI Approved" or "Sony
Music
Approved" CD players in the future? One type for each label that has artists
that I like
to listen to? Don't think so.

Rant mode ends...

Cheers,
Meg

Almost free gear

2003-05-15 Thread Vladimir James
Almost free gear:

Mac LC 10MB RAM (2MB on motherboard); 512KB ROM: 1.44MB SuperDrive; no
keyboard or monitor; worked fine with MacOS 7.5.3 but will require
installation of new OS

Yamaha Powered Multimedia Speakers YST-MS25; 3-unit setup (subwoofer +
left & right);one loose connection requires attention; can be used with
computer, portable CD player or musical keyboard; w/manual; good sound;
seen advertised second hand for around $100

Zip drive; 100MB external w/power supply

The catch? No guarantees, no support, and you must take it all. Gear
located in Sawyers Valley; will deliver to Midland. I expect a token $20
for handling and hassles. :-)

If interested, contact me privately.

this is pretty much what you get from iinet for $40 a month anyway,
plus the bonus chance of connecting during work hours!!
