The battery.

If it's old/worn out, you won't get much life, and I don't know what the
situation is with replacements. Check the battery life BEFORE you buy,
and if you can find out the price of new batteries too.

Also check to make sure the display hinges are solid.

I'd also want to make sure there's a decent amount of memory in it, and
price the upgrade to a sensible amount if it doesn't ship with it. I
define "bare minimum" as 256MB; others needs may vary.

Mostly it depends on what you want to do with it.

Nope, though it was probably the first popular one on Mac. Tabbed
browsing turned up in Mozilla (which Netscape 7 is based on) *way*
before there was even a Netscape > 4.x . It'd been in other browsers,
including Galeon and Opera, well before Mozilla had it too, though I
don't know if any of the others made it to Mac.

The other day someone mentioned browsers for OS9, specifically iCab.
Can anyone rate it for me please?
Could it be better on <= G3 macs than IE or even that little gem
mentioned above?

I dont use OS9 anymore but I have some friends and clients who do and
iCab must be the only browser I havn't tried.

I would feel a lot more positive about OS9 if it had a viable browser.
Most seem so heavy, espcially on pre G3s, while plenty of other OS9
software is still more than useful.

There still is DVD Player Bookmarks in Application Support

Am I best to Delete the above folders, use Pacifist to obtain the

Hi Tobes

I haven't tried it via two internal drives. As it needs to look for a
Firewire connection it may not work but not 100% sure on that though.
You
could always setup the new drive, create the same User, then reboot
over to
the older user and replace the folders inside it with your current

That may also work.
I've done that on a couple of my machines, and then just repaired

rsync could be of use for transferring files, the beauty of Unix /
Linux and the genius of an Australian; Andrew Tridgell (Samba)

rsync is a file transfer program capable of efficient remote update
via a fast differencing algorithm.

information is found via the terminal; type, man rsync

It is used via the command line:

rsync -avz /Volumes/OLDHD/Documents /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Documents

(example only, naming conventions different for each machine and only
valid with OS X)

This transfers all files in Documents folder on old drive to Documents
folder on new. Notice back-slash with space this signifies a space in
naming convention of drive. The -avz - tells program this is an

The forward slash at end of commands for destination signifies to
create a folder with name of the src. I have left it blank so as to
deliver them to Documents folder. Their are many uses for said program
even as a remote or local backup, remember though if you have to remove
system files one has to be Administrator or initialise root if you are
trying to move things across users.

Yes. However I want to emphasise that westnet's service - where it
matters most - in provision of network and the absolutely best support
desk in the known universe is streets ahead of the next competitor.
For example, I recently tracked a transient DNS problem down to "most
likely" in their network - using apple's troubleshooting pages - and an
intelligent and switched on Beau twigged immmediately that I had missed
a notice about DNS number change. Somehow I just know if I had wanted
help at another isp, I would have first had to wait for half an hour
to speak 'live' and then would have got on to a timid trainee with
hearing problems ;-/

And most importantly, the support staff are all very mac inquisitive.
And too, I think everyone would agree that the reply re the flash
problem was well researched and helpful - as far as it went. By the
way, I haven't yet had a reply to their offer to follow up and in my
experience, this usually means that something is getting investigated.

I'll try find an e-mail tomorrow at work from the Mac tech list that
isn't on my home computer - It gave the name of a file that you can
delete (or edit?) that will cause the firewire transfer program to

has to be a clean install without the setup user program been run on

edit some other files to make the OS think the drive was in that
clean install with no users state.

Griffin iMate $20 ADB to USB addaptor - allows ADB devices such as

This is a good size for G3 iMacs and even better with G3/4 Powerbooks

Hi John,

How are you connecting up the firewire cable and to what devices? If
you are connecting two machines together, one of them has to be in
Firewire Target mode (restart mac and hold down the 't' key until a
floating firwewire symbol appears). Otherwise, connect the device and
the mac mini with the cable. Then go to 'About this Mac' in the Apple

if any devices appear in the list. If not, there may be a problem with
either the cable or the device you are connecting to.

system library and apps over via firewire from my iBook 500. This
worked fine so I purchased a Firewire cable for myself.
The problem now is that this new cable (the second one I have tried)
is not seen by either machine. Any ideas?

Do you have any Safari plugins? There was a specific one mentioned
here last week, AcidSearch. Remove that from the plugins folder for
Safari and see if that helps. The actual email from Bob Howells had

Safari, and Security and OSX Updates

2005-04-26 Thread Kelly Duffy
Hi all,

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, I checked the WAMUG site and
the Yahoo group for archives first, I've been unsubscribed since I
last changed email addresses, but last night I downloaded the most
recent updates for Panther and afterwards Safari just stopped working.

I've had problems with ICQ, and general downloading too, although I
think it's more likely to be the files I'm downloading, I tried Safari
and Mozilla, but Safari wont even load up for me since the siftware
updates. All I get is the icon bouncing in the dock.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Also, if there's a more recently updated email archives I'd appreciate the URL.

Kind regards,
Kelly

Weird message

2005-04-26 Thread Ikon Design
Hi

I received this message this morning, 22 times with no subject line and
I can't delete them. G4 OS9.2 Netscape 4.7 all old I know. Could some
one tell me how to get rid of them, they are dated 1/1/70 8.00 am.

Regards

Clive

Probably the Flash loading in the page. Flash player 7 for Mac OS X is
still very processor intensive even though it has improved a lot in the
latest version. Flash player 8 should be out soon and hopefully they
will address the issue and make it more efficient.

Nor can you use their backup service if you have a mac.

All this quite a flaw in their otherwise excellent service

Surging/flickering in speakers, they buzz and make a flickering sound
even when the iMac is shut down and head phone in

Visible screen refresh, the centre of the screen is clear but the
 edges
seem to roll and quake. I think that has something to do with the
 kinks
in the black cable that surround the CRT for some magnetic thing???

crashing in fullscreen mode for most Open GL games especially games
 that launch movies

It is using an older IDE HD taken from a beige G3 and I received it
dismantled so more than likely there's static discharge damage

extra info: running 128MB RAM, OS 9.2, 4.2 GB HD rather than 13GB

Anyone else had extreme issues like this or know what's the best
 option

I'd try replacing the PRAM battery. But the screen rolling and
quaking seems to indicate that the analogue board is dying/dead. Talk
to Kat

Have fun,
