Hi Kevin,
I just checked my Safari and the Menu is static (i.e. does not require mouse to
view)
Strange coz I can’t see anything in Preferences or Menus that would vary this !

Hi Kevin,
I live in Jane Brook so straight down Roe HW then right onto Freeway then I
will get the map out.
I was thinking of dropping into the Apple Store at Garden City for something
else for myself.
So that could work out OK.

Anyway thank you once again and I will phone before I leave.
PS: Sorry I won’t get to see St Paul !

2013-11-04 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

Just had an interesting thought today !

When Apple gets through all the decimals in OSX 10 (that is beyond 10.9) I
wonder how they will designate it ?
Will it be OS11 ? (X being the Roman numeral for 10)
Will it be OSXI ? (XI being Roman numerals for 11)
Will it be OS Eleven ?

Any other ideas ?

Re: Email to group

2013-10-29 Thread Stephen Chape
I notice that since I went to Mavericks inserting recipients when sending an
email (in Apple Mail) is different.
I used to be able to double click each one from contacts but now that does not
work.
I have to select each recipient in contacts then click TO.
Takes twice as long and is especially annoying when I have quite a few to add.

iPad with Internet ?

2013-10-25 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

A friend of mine would like to set her elderly mum up with the Internet & Email.
The mum does not have a computer, so she is considering an iPad.
What would be the best and simplest plan to get her iPad on the Internet ?

Re: Apple ID compromised

2013-10-24 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi Ronni,
That was my first thought.
But then I thought “iMac13,1” ???
I am pretty sure her’s is called “Sharon’s iMac” or something similar !
Unfortunately she is not very computer savvy and she is about 25 minutes away.
Is there a simple way for me to get one of her kids to check her computer name ?
I am not sure where to look.

Because I don’t know this iMac I have changed my Apple ID & Password.
Is there anything else I should do ?

Thank you Peter,
I am hoping to change this when Mavericks comes along soon.
But if I can't then it's not that important.
I must have used mine on hers some time ago because she has no credit card.

Changing Apple ID for an iMac

2013-10-19 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

In the last 24 hours I have brought my daughter's iMac from Snow Leopard to
Mountain Lion.
I was concerned about how to do this on her iMac at first because she has never
had an Apple ID.
So first I set up an Apple ID for her.
However when I started the update her iMac threw up my Apple ID so I continued
using that (just to make things easier).
Obviously I have used mine on her iMac in the past.
It is now all done.

But when I then updated a few more things for her my Apple ID popped up again
each time.

So my question is:-
Now that I have set up her own Apple ID, how do I get her's to pop up when
updates, etc are required.
I have used her's to set up iCloud so that should be OK.
But is there some way of adjusting things so her's is automatically requested
(rather than mine) ?

Stephen Chape

Re: Vault File for 1Password ?

2013-10-13 Thread Stephen Chape
I must be a complete dope using AppCleaner for this one.
I followed the instructions for installing and setting up 1Password 4 first.
Then the final instruction was to uninstall 1Password 3 Extension first and
then delete 1Password 3 itself.
D !

Fortunately (because of my trusting nature) I keep all my passwords on paper in
a very secure place.
So I have now re-entered them all into 1Password 4 and linked the logins again.
The annoying part is that I also lost all my software license info.
It is all around somewhere but not as organised as my passwords, so no huge
problem.

I now have 1Password 4 syncing with iCloud so it is backed up.
But every so often I get a message saying that "1Password backup failed".
But this does not refer to iCloud. It seems to refer to an "on the Mac backup"
It states in the 1Password user guide that these backups are automatic but does
not say how to turn them off.

Any ideas re this please ?
I am waiting for a reply from Agile Bits re this but they are obviously very
busy right now !

Re: iOS 7.0.2 Update

2013-09-29 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi Ronni,
I can understand your frustration.

I have lost count of how many times I have been asked by family and friends for
computer advice,
then they either ignore it or go do something totally different. And that's
fine coz I can't make
them do anything !

But the most frustrating part is when they come back with a problem and ask for
advice.
I have started telling them "your decision, your problem"

However please don't stop giving your invaluable advice - you have been a LIFE
SAVER many times over.

Downloading already downloaded apps from App Store ?

2013-09-21 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

When I installed iOS7 most of my Apps disapeared from my iPhone 5.
Luckily the important ones are still there.
I understood they could be downloaded again for no charge.
However on the App Store they each have the Download Button greyed out and it
states "Downloaded"
I am guessing that they are not yet upgraded for iOS7.

Anyway how can one download apps again ?

Thank you Ronni,
I now have iOS7 on my iPhone 5.
Any idea how to close Apps ?
It does not involve Home button and holding down an App any more ?

Thank goodness for WAMUG !!

2013-09-17 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks .. I feel a great need to tell you this !

A few months ago I joined a Mac Users Group in the UK just out of curiosity I
guess.
I won't say which one coz that may not be fair.

WELL - what an "eye opener".
I have been besieged by so many email posts inviting me to meet at pubs for a
Mac Users drink together,
invitations to go cycling together on weekends, trail walking and god knows
what else. I honestly began to
wonder where the Mac came into it.

I was reprimanded for not replying to posts using the "correct email format"
I was told to keep my emails short and brief so as not to waste anyones time.

NO KIDDING !!

I had to make a new Mail Rule to send all their posts straight to the TRASH !

So thank god for WAMUG - phew I am so glad to be home !
Well I never left really !

Regards,
Stephen Chape

Thanks Ronni,
I actually change the file names before importing now, but only for the past
few months.
It's the older photos that I still copy to desktop before emailing, etc.

Re: Time Machine Hard Drive unmounting by itself ?

2013-08-18 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi Ronni,
Partition Map Scheme is "Master Boot Record"
Should I change that to "GUID Partition Table" ?
And if so how can I do that ?

PS: What a nuisance having to eject the drive each time I turn off the Mac
(which is very night before bed).
But if that is the only way then I shall do that !

I might have to re-institute the Time Capsule without using the WiFi on it.
I now have a new WiFi network from the new Telstra Modem Router

Thank you Ronni,

Drive Model is WDBBEPOO10BBK-01
I have formatted as Mac OS Extended Journalled (not sure about GUID Partition
Table)
I also have the Energy Saver settings as you suggested.

It could be as you suggested re the very low power in sleep mode.
My step daughter has an older Mac (about 2 years old) with the same setup for
Time Machine as me.
But she has a Seagate compact USB drive.
And she does not have this issue.

I now don't put my Mac to sleep when I leave it.
I just log out instead.

However I might investigate plugging the drive into my new modem router.
It has 2 USB ports.

Re: Time Machine Hard Drive unmounting by itself ?

2013-08-16 Thread Stephen Chape
That could be what causes it Ronni.
I usually put the iMac to sleep when I leave it for a few hours.
In fact just came back to after about 3 hours and it had un-mounted again.
I will try not "sleeping" the iMac and see what happens.

Re: Time Machine Hard Drive unmounting by itself ?

2013-08-15 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi Ronni,

That item is already disabled.
My Time Capsule and my old wired modem had both been playing up recently.
So I replaced both of them with a Telstra WiFi Modem.
So I plugged in this spare HD and switched Time Machine to it.
I just can't figure why it un-mounts randomly like this ?

I have the very latest OX on the latest i7 iMac.

Time Machine Hard Drive unmounting by itself ?

2013-08-15 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

About a week ago I installed a 1TB WD Portable Hard Drive to use as my Time
Machine.
It has worked fine except for one point.

Every so often I return to my iMac after a few hours away to find a message
that I have unplugged the hard drive without ejecting it. I have NOT unplugged
it. So I then unplug it and plug it back in again in order for it to re-mount.

Has anyone any idea why this happens and perhaps how to prevent it ?

Hi folks,

I think I may have asked this before but cannot recall seeing a solution ??
I find the grouped emails in Apple Mail really annoying.
Both my wife and I keep forgetting to turn the little arrow to see more emails
in a group.

Is there any way to turn this off ?
I know you can Expand Conversations from the Menu Bar, but is there a more

Problem with Airport Express ?

2013-07-24 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

My step daughter has an Airport Express with her iMac (using Snow Leopard).
Today the Airport Express began displaying an orange light and WiFi stopped.

This happens sometimes with my Airport Extreme and I simply turn off the power
and back on a couple of minutes later.
It is fine after that.

However this is not the case with her Airport Express.
Switched off and back on a few times and still an orange light & no WiFi.
I have ploughed through the configuration process but lost track of it.
Too much trial & error is very time consuming !

I have transferred her internet connection back to Ethernet for now, so she has
a connection whilst I tackle the issue with the Airport Express.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated please ?

PS: The Airport Express is only there for her kids iPods and PS3 so no hurry.

It sounds like a good quality old style keyboard.
The only complaint seems to be noise, but how noisy are they ?
I have never really liked the flat rubber keyed Apple keyboards.

Dropbox question ?

2013-05-13 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

A couple of months ago I installed Dropbox because iCloud does not look after
off site backup for my Word, Excel and PDF files.

I understood that as I created or changed files in folders on my Mac they would
automatically synced to folders in Dropbox with the same name. So I created
folders in Dropbox using the same names as those I use on my Mac to save files.

I have just discovered that neither new files nor changed files have been
synced to Dropbox.

Have I misunderstood how this works ?

Thank you Neil,
There must be a time lag then.
I checked an Excel file that I adjusted this afternoon and the changes were NOT

I will keep an eye on it in future !

Dropbox !

2013-03-31 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

I started using dropbox about a month ago.
I understood that if you changed a file that is already uploaded to Dropbox, it
was automatically uploaded to reflect the changes.

This does not appear to be the case.
Each time you make a change to an existing file, you must remember to upload
that file again.

Is this correct and if so can this be changed to become automatic ?

Backups with Dropbox ?

2013-03-17 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

I downloaded Dropbox yesterday.
I have set up folders in dropbox for my Excel, Word and PDF folders.
And have now copied to them.
I am happy with iCloud, but it does not seem to want to be involved with the
above files.

Just one question please if anyone knows this.
If I make changes to one of these files does it automatically update in
Dropbox, or does it need to be uploaded again ?

I miss the MobileMe backups; they were very handy !

Stephen Chape

Re: My new iPhone will not sync with Calender

Just noticed my iPhone has some entries in Calendar entered twice.
One entry is in there 5 times on the same date.
All the duplicates had the wrong time against them.
I have manually deleted those now.

Re: My new iPhone will not sync with Calender

2013-01-10 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi Ronni,

Eveyrthing other than Calendars is working.
Everything always has on my old iPhone 3.

I just got the new iPhone 5 a couple of days ago.
But I only noticed today that all my appointments have disappeared on the
iPhone.
They were there this morning.
This happened after I plugged it into my iMac and performed a sync.
I have managed to get them all back now.
But when I add a new appointment to either the iPhone or the iMac then sync,
It does not transfer to the other.

I notice that my calendars are listed under an iCloud header in Calendar on the
iMac.
PS: This is a brand new i7 iMac.

Does this do something different ?

My new iPhone will not sync with Calender

2013-01-10 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

Everything else seems to sync except Calendar.
I am trying not to use iCloud because I don't know enough about it yet.
The problem may be that all my Calendars are listed under an iCloud header.
Is there any way to change this or can I do something else to make Calendars
sync ?

Re: Address Book in Mountain Lion Mail ?

2013-01-03 Thread Stephen Chape
Sorry Ronda - I must have been a bit vague.
Had day surgery today and I am a little sore.

When in Mail in SL I was able to select contacts by clicking a button.
This opened the Contacts list.
Then simply double click each address I wished to send to.
As I did so each was placed into the TO box.

I cannot see this facility in ML.
So I do not have a prompt to help me place addresses in the TO box.

I just dragged it to the trash and then emptied the trash.
Probably did the wrong thing eh ?

If I reformat the Time Capsule will I lose my WiFi settings or are they
separate?
And then can I just start over again?

Setting Time Capsule up with new iMac ?

2012-12-22 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

At last I have my new iMac.
21.5 inch i7 with 16 GB RAM.
Flippin marvellous.

I tried setting up with my original Time Capsule but all I got was a message to
tell me there is no room for this.
I guess it wants to start again because this is a new and different Mac.

So I deleted the largest file from the disk (can't recall it's name but there
were only 2).
It has spent the last 3 hours "cleaning up" with no indication that it is
actually saving.

Does anyone know what the correct procedure is it get it running with a new Mac
?
Do I need to re format the drive and start again ?
Will the "cleaning" up finish and then save afterwards ?

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone.
And I wish you all a happy new year (when it arrives).

Regards,
Stephen Chape

Re: New iTunes and iMovie Audio ???

2012-12-04 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi again Ronni,

Looks like a combination of things worked.
I deleted that iMovie preference file as advised.
Then downloaded and installed iTunes from scratch.
I also noticed right at the end of my iMovie project a file with the yellow
triangle so I deleted that.

And now it all seems to be going fine.

PHEW !!!
Thank you Ronni once again for your invaluable help.
For a little while I thought iTunes 11 had a bug that has upset my video
editing past time !!

Re: New iTunes and iMovie Audio ???

2012-12-04 Thread Stephen Chape
I just tried to restore iMovie from previous version using Time Machine.
This was before I saw your new email Ronni.
In doing so I finished up with a tiny 2.5MB iTunes app that doesn't work.
So I have deleted and must start from scratch.
At least I will have a clean sheet once I delete that preference file.

Re: New iTunes and iMovie Audio ???

2012-12-04 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi Ronni,

Yep. Tried all those things.
This is really strange.
They play OK in iTunes.
I deleted them from iMovie and dragged back in but got the same thing.
I even dragged some other music in but same again.

I have searched iTunes and iMovie menus but can't see anything relevant.

I may have to use Time Machine to get back old iTunes app.

2012-12-03 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

I downloaded iTunes 11 today.
Then a little later whilst in iMovie I dragged some music into iMovie in the
usual way.
PANIC !
The music clips have no sound !!
I have checked volume levels, etc and they all look OK.

Any ideas please ?

Regards,
Stephen Chape

Ordering new iMac from Apple Store Online ?

2012-12-03 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

The specs I require are not "off the shelf" so what are the preferred methods
of ordering ?
I am concerned that if I order from Apple Store Online it may be delivered
while I am not at home.
Can a special order be placed at the Perth Apple Store and collected when ready
?

Regards,
Stephen Chape

iMacs not showing as delayed on Apple website !

2012-11-18 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

Interesting that there are rumours about the iMac possibly being delayed till
2013.
Because the Apple website still shows 21.5" coming November & 27" coming
December.

Hi Juliet,
Have you tried converting with Toast.
It is pretty extensive.
