Re: PageMaker

2008-06-09 Thread Phillip Arena

Hi Adrian,

Ah yes, I've used both Pagemaker and InDesign in the past. As with
any app. familiarity and ease of use can, to a degree, make up for
lack of functionality - both apps will produce good quality products
- I found that the steeper learning curve for InDesign was worth it,
in terms of extra features etc. Many Quark users moved over to
Indesign. Yes, I'm still running a G5, occasionally in Classic mode
that allows me to run Pagemaker. To be honest, I've also got
Pagemaker 7 here for XP that I can run on a 'darkside' machine if
needed for a quick project - it's still a great application.

As for the project, that sounds interesting! Your friend doesn't need
a proof-reader with anatomical/medical experience does he/she?

:)

Phil

Hi all,

A friend of mine is writing a technical medical book with lots of
graphics etc. using word on a windows machine, how wrong can you
get?
When I last did a project like that I used PageMaker which no longer
exists. Can anyone please advise me of a suitable alternative
software and any info on publishing would be appreciated.

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I would use Indesign, it's very user friendly. Your friend would find
it very difficult to get anything published from word.

I use is for brochures, booklets etc. Accepts photos and graphics -

Excellent for a free application.

Hi Adrian. You can still get PageMaker but only for OS 9, also for
Windows. I produce photographic coffee
table books with Adobe InDesign, a great program, but I did like
Pagemaker. You can also use Apple's
Pages (simple to use but quite effective), and you can still get Quark
Xpress.

Re: PageMaker

2008-06-05 Thread Eugene

Hi Adrian,

like everyone else InDesign is my choice. It is the illegitimate
child of PageMaker and includes many fantastic features.

Word from office '08 (and I guess windows office '07) has an entirely
new publishing section. I haven't played with it much but it shows a
degree of competence. If the book is already done in word it would be
relatively easy to convert and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

If the book is going to be sent to the printers they should have a
say in how it should be created and presented. In the days of M$
Publisher they would have a hissy fit if the book was produced with
that package.

  Regards,
  Eugene

Did you get a reply? I was going to dig out some of my old PageMaker
files to see what the format was like, because if the text is simple
enough you might be able to extract it (without formatting) using the
`strings` utility on the command line. Otherwise, there are probably
few people on this list (myself included) who may still have access to
PageMaker 5.0, 6.0 and 6.5 if those would be old enough to read your old
files.

Hi Yvonne/Wyvern helped me out with those already, thanks for all

wondering why my AppleWorks didn't want to open them.

Not using anything instead of Pagemaker -- was doing graphic design
back in Singapore before I came here 8+ years ago and did something
180 degrees different (or more like 120 degrees different) -- I'm a
computer programmer nowadays. I still keep Photoshop, Illustrator and
some of my tools but not as up to date as the good old days, and it's
always refreshing to work spatially again after so much logical
thought -- I enjoyed doing the Graphviz logo for example.

Pagemaker 6.52 Cannot open file

2004-04-12 Thread Mike Murray

Hi muggers

Any Pagemaker experts out there?

I've been working on a document for just about a day when I suddenly
had a series of error messages (including something about hyperxxx
parameters), then I can't save because disk full (which it wasn't).
Then the program quit. I now find that the file (which I'd been saving
regularly) won't open. It looks normal, right icon etc. When I try to
open it, I get the message Cannot open file Error 8009:16404

And did I back it up before all this happened? Did I hell.

Mac Ti Powerbook system 10.2.8 (but I'd rebooted and was working in
system 9.2.2), Adobe Pagemaker 6.52

Any advice? Or do I have to start again???

OK !I don't know Pagemaker at all ... but

1.

There are some funnies sometimes ... I am thinking of word, for
example ... where if you
save and then later save again you progressively get an increase in
file size and an
accumulation of all the changes. For Word I would occasionally do a
save as

which starts afresh in a way.

If you have not already done so , increase the allocated Ram to
Pagemaker ,
delete Pagemaker preferences ( or at least drag them out of your system
file to a parking spot )

and reboot. The system will make new default preferences .

It might give you the chance to get into the file to manipulate it.

2.
Depending on how you use use Classic, you may have an alternative
approach !
Under Classic advanced there is an option to use home
preferences, which are the preferences

of the App that were last imported from OS9 x.
You might try there for access ?

You seem to imply that you may have been working on this document in
OS 10.2.8

before rebooting and then working on it in OS 9.2.2

How big was the document ?
How much Ram ?
How much spare Disk space ?

Have you installed something new on your computer recently. The
reason why I ask you that is that I was having similar problems
with Apple Works.

While looking ay the web pages of MacCentral the other day, there
was the mention of the Trojan Horse and a few lines down for a try
out for Virex anti virus software, so I thought why not give it a
go.

Next day, after hours of frustration trying to find the Apple Works
problem I got rid of the Virex software and all was working fine
again.

This is normal for MacOS X - it stores and uses fonts in lots of
different places. Classic, on the other hand, can use fonts only if
they exist in the *:System Folder:Fonts folder. The only way to get
access to all your other fonts is with a font management utility such
Suitcase, ATM Deluxe, Font Juggler, etc. Font management utilities in
MacOS X are not as necessary, although they can be handy if you want to
keep your base set of fonts small. MacOS X has it's own built-in font
handling facilities as well. For more info on how MacOS X handles
fonts, check out article #106417 in the Apple Knowledge Base. You can
also look for a file called

UsingFontsinMacOSX_L25032B.pdf

also available from Apple's site, (although I can't remember the
article number. If you want a copy please let me know and I'll send it
to off the list)

Font problems Indesign 2 and Pagemaker 6

2003-02-13 Thread Dudley Gager [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am having font problems with Indesign 2 under OSX and Pagemaker 6 under
classic. I find I have numerous font folders. Is this right? Do I
need to clean things up? This is what I have:

System/Library/Fonts - a collection of mostly dfonts - presumably OSX

Library/Fonts - whole heap of fonts - presumably OSX fonts
Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/Reqrd - small selection of MM
and postscript fonts

Applications/Adobe InDesign 2.0/Required/Fonts - 4 fonts
Applications/Adobe InDesign 2.0/Fonts - empty

User/Library/Fonts - empty
User/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts - a text doc called
AdobeFnt06.lst

System Folder/Fonts - my original font collection from the old days
System Folder/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/Reqrd- small selection
of MM and postscript fonts

I have downloaded Fontagent X. Is this what I need?
