Your location is reported by your ISP, so if their server you are linking
through is elsewhere, that is the location reported. As long as you were
signing in at the time, it isn't a problem.

Re: iCloud Problems 6 Mar 2020

2020-03-06 Thread Matt Falvey
Hi Ronni, I tried those suggestions and although the steps and sequence were
not quite the same I think you have sorted it. Thank you.

It would not send me the recovery key to my phone or iPad, but each time I
retried it I had a noise indicating that it had been sent just could not find
it, then about ten minutes after I had fixed things after an option of typing
the new password into the screen appeared, 5 or 6 new recovery codes hit the
phone and pad in a few seconds.

One thing I did notice and it has happened frequently when signing in, is that
the warning that my “Apple ID is being used to sign in to a device near
Wembley, WA” is nowhere near where I live in Noranda, is this normal? I thought
with device tracking it would know exactly where I was.

Thanks again.

Matt.

Hi Matt,
Did you setup with ‘two-step verification?
If so you should have a ‘Recovery Key’

Accounts with two-step verification
Go to your Apple ID account page and click "Forgot Apple ID or password."
Enter your Apple ID, select the option to reset your password, then choose
Continue. ...
Enter your Recovery Key for two-step verification.*
Choose a trusted device. ...
Enter the verification code.

Setup two-factor authentication from your Apple ID account page.

 Confirm which feature you're using
If you're not sure if you set up two-factor authentication or two-step
 verification, use these steps:
   • Sign in to your Apple ID account page.
   • In the Security section, look for two-factor authentication or
two-step verification, then see if the feature is off or on.

If two-step verification is on, continue with the steps to turn it off,
then turn on two-factor authentication. If two-factor authentication is
on, then you're already set up.

Before you can turn on two-factor authentication, you need to turn off
 two-step verification. Use these steps:
   • Sign in to your Apple ID account page.
   • In the Security section, click Edit.
   • Click Turn Off Two-Step Verification. Click again to confirm.

You can Follow the full instructions at this Apple support link:

Hi Peter,

Did you correctly enter the latest code sent?
If you set up your Apple ID to require two-factor authentication or two-step
verification, make sure you correctly enter the latest code sent to your device.

Re: iCloud

2019-04-02 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Peter,

Peter H would be attending the WAMUG AGM meeting tonight, so unavailable to
reply to your message.
Setup two-factor authentication from your Apple ID account page.

Confirm which feature you're using
If you're not sure if you set up two-factor authentication or two-step
verification, use these steps:
Sign in to your Apple ID account page.
In the Security section, look for two-factor authentication or two-step
verification, then see if the feature is off or on.

If two-step verification is on, continue with the steps to turn it off, then
turn on two-factor authentication. If two-factor authentication is on, then
you're already set up.

Before you can turn on two-factor authentication, you need to turn off two-step
verification. Use these steps:
Sign in to your Apple ID account page.
In the Security section, click Edit.
Click Turn Off Two-Step Verification. Click again to confirm.

You can Follow the full instructions at this Apple support link:
 https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT207198

Kind regards,
Ronni

Hi Peter
Thank you for your suggestion!
I don’t have two-factor authentication set up and when I try to set it up
according to APPLE instructions I must go to System Preferences and choose
iCloud, then Security. Only problem is that when I go to System Preferences and
iCloud there is no option to select Security as it’s asking me to put in my
Apple ID then Password and then I go on the roundabout of it asking for Apple

So I still have the same problem.

Re: iCloud Contacts copying to Family member

2017-10-03 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Peter,

I’m not sure what you have done here… In Family Sharing - Contacts is NOT
shared?
Is your daughter’s iPhone 4 on iOS 9.? I think iPhone 4 can’t go above iOS 9

Your daughter uses her iCloud username and iCloud email address
usern...@icloud.com (which will become the child’s
Apple ID)
Your email address is the ‘rescue email address’ for your daughter’s account.

Turn off iCloud Contacts syncing. To prevent contacts from syncing between
devices that share the same Apple ID and iCloud account, go to Settings >
iCloud and make sure Contacts is not switched on.

If you find you need to Restore your Contacts after your daughter deletes your
contacts from her iPhone

Restore your contacts
You can restore your contacts and contact groups from an earlier version that
was automatically archived in iCloud.
• Go to Settings on iCloud.com , then
click Restore Contacts (in the Advanced section).
Available versions are listed by the date and time they were archived.
• To the right of the version you want to restore, click Restore.
There may be more versions than can be shown at once. Scroll to see more.
•
Note: Wait until iCloud finishes restoring your contacts before you change
them. While it’s restoring them, any changes you make aren’t saved.
The restored contacts and contact groups appear on all your devices set up for
iCloud Contacts.

If you change your mind, you can restore the contacts you were using. Just
follow the steps above to restore the most recent version available.

Hope this helps you sort the Contacts problem.

Cheers,

Ronni

Re: iCloud Drive

2014-12-13 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Stephen,

iCloud Drive is not a Dropbox replacement. I have not moved from Dropbox to
iCloud Drive.
And I really can't see myself using iCloud Drive in the near future - as I
don't use the iOS versions of Pages, Numbers, Keynote.

A couple of quick points:
1. It should be noted that iCloud Drive requires iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, so
legacy devices running Mavericks or iOS 7 will not be able to keep their
documents up to date with other devices.
In addition, once a user has upgraded to iCloud Drive, they cannot downgrade
back to Documents in the Cloud.

http://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201385
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6558264

2. iCloud Drive Is Not a Dropbox Replacement

The two services work differently. Take sharing, for instance. iCloud is
generally all about sharing, but it’s mostly about sharing your stuff with your
devices: that is, sharing the same stuff (calendars, music, mail, your budget
in Numbers, and your half-finished novel in Pages) among all of your devices.
Sharing stuff with other people, even other iCloud users, is not easy, and
worse, the options are limited and tightly focused (such as specific photo
streams or explicitly shared documents in Pages or Numbers).

Dropbox, on the other hand, lets you share folders and all the documents
therein with other Dropbox users - for collaboration with others working on
the same project, writing, editing etc. Doing the same thing with iCloud Drive
would be impossible.

iCloud, unlike Dropbox, doesn’t store previous versions of a file (though some
individual apps do), nor does it let you restore deleted files.

Most importantly, though, iCloud Drive is not just a file sharing service.
Remember that apps on both Mac and iOS have a lot to say about what you can do
with their app libraries. This means that the Finder, in order to create the
illusion that iCloud Drive is just another drive with a bunch of folders and
yet respect those individual apps’ rights and requirements concerning their own
stuff, can behave unpredictably. You can’t tell by sight, for example, which
app libraries will accept which files until you try them.

Cheers,
Ronni

 A couple of quick points:
 1. It should be noted that iCloud Drive requires iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, so
legacy devices running Mavericks or iOS 7 will not be able to keep their
documents up to date with other devices.
In addition, once a user has upgraded to iCloud Drive, they cannot downgrade

2014-12-13 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Stephen,

Dropbox - My Work Strategy - My work wherever I am:

I use iWork’09 (Not iWork’13) - Pages, Numbers Keynote. My tutorials are
produced in Pages’09.
I work on Two Computers - a 17” MacBook Pro (which is my main “Home Base” Mac)
and a MacBook Air (which is my “Out About, Work” Mac).

I can be working on a Pages or Numbers project on either computer, so need the
projects kept in Sync.
I have a Folder in Dropbox named - “Work In Progress” which holds the documents
I’m working on.
So all my work files are the same no matter where I’m working from.
Which means I can start working on a document on my MacBook Pro (at Home Base)
and continue working on it on my MacBook Air (wherever I am).

I can review a document or spreadsheet at any time on either computer, or share
the document to a colleague.
And if I finish a project and export is as a PDF I can read it on my iOS
devices. Dropbox syncs to my iOS devices as well as my computers.

Cheers,
Ronni

Update to Celebrity Photo Investigation

We wanted to provide an update to our investigation into the theft of photos of
certain celebrities. When we learned of the theft, we were outraged and
immediately mobilized Apple’s engineers to discover the source. Our customers’
privacy and security are of utmost importance to us. After more than 40 hours
of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were
compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security
questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet.

None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of
Apple’s systems including iCloud® or Find my iPhone. We are continuing to work
with law enforcement to help identify the criminals involved.

To protect against this type of attack, we advise all users to always use a
strong password and enable two-step verification. Both of these are addressed
on our website at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4232.

A couple of articles which suggest other explanations:

The fact that many of the photos have been found to have been taken on Android

Ok, thanks for that extensive response Ronni. I am clear on this now and will
keep this to review the links over the next few days.

With migration from Windows to OSX iTunes, are the folder and file contents
compatible between the two platforms by simply picking them up and dropping
them across to the new machine? Yes I will buy a new Macbook so definitely
Mavericks (or the next iteration if I don't drag my feet too long and Apple
releases the next one).

iTunes creates a Backup of your iPhone/iPad (iOS Devices) then syncs

 About iCloud Storage
iCloud includes 5 GB of free storage space, and you can buy more if that’s
not enough (an additional 10 GB for $20 per year, 20 GB for $40 per year, or
50 GB for $100 per year). Apple makes a big deal about how far that free 5 GB
will go, and how it should be enough for most users. In reality, the
situation is more complex than it appears.

On the positive side, many types of data you may want to store in iCloud
don’t count against that 5 GB limit.

For example, purchases from the iTunes Store—music, TV shows, movies, apps,
and books— don’t take up any of your personal space, because Apple already
has copies of all that data on their servers.

Photos in your Photo Stream don’t count either, no matter how many you have
or what their resolution is, presumably because that data stays in the cloud
 only temporarily.

That leaves email (including attachments), documents, and—if you’ve enabled
iCloud Backups—the photos in the Camera Roll from each of your devices,
personal settings, app data, and a few other items that would appear at first
glance to occupy little space altogether.

But those backups turn out to be a bigger deal than you might think. iCloud
doesn’t require you to back up iOS devices to the cloud; you can continue
backing them up to your Mac.

If it can be done, what are the upsides to this backup process in two
 places and downsides if any?

You can set things to backup automatically either to your computer (iTunes)
or to iCloud, but not both.

If you choose automatic backup to this computer in iTunes, and then set the
preference on the iPhone to automatically back up to iCloud, it will warn you
that you are no longer automatically backing up to your computer (and next
time you look in iTunes, the setting to automatic iCloud backups will have
automatically updated from your iPhone setting, or the other way around).

Regardless of which you chose in iTunes for automatically backup, you can
manually backup to your computer (iTunes) from iTunes using the Backup Now
 button.
You can manually backup to iCloud from your iPhone Settings iCloud
Storage Backup Backup Now (button at the bottom).
Backing up to iCloud you use the iPhone not iTunes.

On your new MacBook Pro I assume will be running Mavericks?
Mavericks no longer includes Sync Services.
“Most users won’t even notice it’s gone, but it will affect people who still
use older versions of apps that rely on this mechanism to sync data with iOS
 devices”

“The loss of Sync Services also means that you can no longer use iTunes (via
Wi-Fi or USB) to sync calendars, contacts, and notes between your Mac and
iOS devices. You must instead use a server-based system of some sort on both
your Mac and iOS devices, which could be (among other options) iCloud,
 Google, an Exchange server”

“You can still sync media, apps, and documents with iOS devices via iTunes,

Thanks for that Daniel. The 'over network' transfer sounds appealing. When you

Hi Pete

Any of your data on your Windows machine that you want transferred will
transfer over to the new Mac that you get. If you're using an external drive
for your music like you mentioned, then you don't really need to do anything.
All you do is plug the external drive into the Mac and then start with the
Option key held down. iTunes will then ask please choose the Library you want
to use. You then point it to the iTunes library on the external drive. It will
then work with the files there. The one downside or caveat may be dependant on
how the drive is formatted. As the Mac *may* say,..hey, I can't write to this
drive, so sorry I can't use it. (It probably won't say it like that of
course,…hehe).
But a) the migration won't take the data from the external drive, it's solely
going to transfer the data from the Windows OS drive (i.e. your data) and b)
the external drive should then just carry along as normal on the Mac drive for
your iTunes Library using the above method (dependant on format of course). But
it will advise that.
But yes, if the format is different so it can't read/write to it, then you may
need another drive to transfer it to. In which case you can then get a large
drive, reformat it for the Mac then transfer the data from your original drive
to the newly created drive and then use the same steps above.

I do this regularly while I'm creating my Media Drive. By default my laptop
has it's own iTunes Library, whereas the Media Drive is what I'm working on
while setting it up with all the data for the house. When I want to change back
and forwards, I just Quit iTunes and open it again with the Option key and
Choose Library. It then just switches between the two no problems at all.
Sometimes this can be good, as I've set something up for a family. They had the
family safe main iTunes Library with all kid friendly stuff on it. Then they
Option start iTunes for the horror movies and full on action movies. (or swear
words). That way the kids don't accidentally start playing something they
shouldn't. They just store those on a little portable drive that they can move
from machine to machine to machine. Works quite well ;)

Hope that helps a little more.

If you didn't want to do it that way, then you'd do the same manual type of
transfer as above (e.g. My Music on Windows to Music folder on the Mac).
When you open iTunes, it will just adjust it to be Mac friendly. But all
your music and playlists etc will be the same.
I've done a few transfers for clients when supplying the new gear and
transferred it from their Windoze machines for them. Has (generally) been a
simple transfer. (sometimes with a bit of a clean up or manual transfer on
top just for things missed or not gone to plan.) But overall quite easy.

Re: ICloud vs computer backup

2013-11-10 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Peter,

iTunes does NOT backup your iTunes Library - iCloud does NOT backup your iTunes
Library. You use Time Machine or the backup program you are using to backup
your complete system.

iTunes or iCloud can backup your iPhone/iPad (iOS Devices)
iTunes creates a Backup of your iPhone/iPad (iOS Devices) then syncs
information.

About iCloud Storage
iCloud includes 5 GB of free storage space, and you can buy more if that’s not
enough (an additional 10 GB for $20 per year, 20 GB for $40 per year, or 50 GB
for $100 per year). Apple makes a big deal about how far that free 5 GB will
go, and how it should be enough for most users. In reality, the situation is
more complex than it appears.

On the positive side, many types of data you may want to store in iCloud don’t
count against that 5 GB limit.

For example, purchases from the iTunes Store—music, TV shows, movies, apps, and
books— don’t take up any of your personal space, because Apple already has
copies of all that data on their servers.

Photos in your Photo Stream don’t count either, no matter how many you have or
what their resolution is, presumably because that data stays in the cloud only
temporarily.

Hi, I’ve a basic question about how iTunes works. When you have an idevice
attached to a computer with iTunes, one has the choice of selecting for
Backups Either “iCloud” OR “This Computer”.
I have a music/video library around 230GB and so I choose to have it on an
external drive to which the iTunes library path is pointed. I am using
iTunes on a Windows 7 laptop and have for many years, but soon to migrate it
all to a Macbook Pro probably still on an external drive (I can’t wait!!
My question is, if I choose in iTunes to backup to “This Computer”, then
does that preclude using iCloud for any backups for lesser voluminous data –
say contacts, calendar etc? I’m not going to pay for 250GB of iCloud storage.
Can one toggle between the two settings as you please?
If it can be done, what are the upsides to this backup process in two places
 and downsides if any?

You can set things to backup automatically either to your computer (iTunes) or
to iCloud, but not both.

If you choose automatic backup to this computer in iTunes, and then set the
preference on the iPhone to automatically back up to iCloud, it will warn you
that you are no longer automatically backing up to your computer (and next time
you look in iTunes, the setting to automatic iCloud backups will have
automatically updated from your iPhone setting, or the other way around).

Regardless of which you chose in iTunes for automatically backup, you can
manually backup to your computer (iTunes) from iTunes using the Backup Now
button.
You can manually backup to iCloud from your iPhone Settings iCloud Storage
Backup Backup Now (button at the bottom).

Wi-Fi or USB) to sync calendars, contacts, and notes between your Mac and iOS
devices. You must instead use a server-based system of some sort on both your
Mac and iOS devices, which could be (among other options) iCloud, Google, an
Exchange server”

“You can still sync media, apps, and documents with iOS devices via iTunes,
—this change affects only calendars, contacts, and notes.”

You might have setup iCloud sync and also iTunes sync for Safari Bookmarks.
In the earliest days of the iPhone and iPod touch, the only way to keep

wired syncs via iTunes. MobileMe later made wireless push synchronisation

Even so, syncing these types of data via iTunes is still possible with a wired
sync or a new-in- iOS-5 wireless sync.
And that’s a problem, because if you sync an iOS device both with iTunes and
with iCloud, you’ll almost inevitably encounter sync loops that lead to endless
duplication of data—especially calendar and contact items.

So, it’s not enough simply to turn iCloud syncing on; you must also turn iTunes
syncing off for these types of data, if it isn’t off already! To do this,
follow these steps:

1. Connect your iOS device to your computer.
2. Open iTunes.
3. Select your device in the sidebar on the left.
4. In the main part of the iTunes window, click Info.

5. If any of the following items are checked, uncheck them: Sync Address Book
Contacts, Sync iCal Calendars, Sync Safari Bookmarks, and Sync Notes.

6. Click Apply.

The selected data types stop syncing via iTunes and instead sync via iCloud
only.

Re: iCloud on hte desktop

2013-05-14 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Stuart,

Are you sure you are looking in the correct ~/Library?
To show the ~/Library (Home Library) is the same in Lion Mountain Lion.

The Path is HD/Users/user name/Library/Mobile Documents.xx (the xxx will
be numbers)

NOTE: But Don't go moving anything out of the Mobile Documents Folder!

How to create aliases for Documents in the Cloud folders:

1. Launch the Finder

2. In the Menu click on the Go menu and then down to Go to Folder (or use the
keyboard shortcut, CMD + SHIFT + G)

3. Type ~/library/ and click on Go

4. Double click on the folder called Mobile Documents

5. Find the folders that store your Documents in the Cloud, namely:
com~apple~pages
com~apple-numbers
com~apple~keynote

6. Double click on the com~apple~pages folder.

7. Right click (Control-Click) on the Documents folder.

8. Select Create Alias (Make Alias), then drag that folder onto your desktop.

9. Repeat this procedure for the Numbers, Pages, Keynote Documents folders on
all Macs that use your iCloud account.

I'm out of here now, I'm not supposed to be doing any support work yet. I
intended to just answer a couple of quick WAMUG questions... but somehow that
was not what eventuated :(

 What Is iCloud?
It is not a physical object you can touch, it's not a piece of software you
can install. It's not a Web site – at least, not entirely. Referring to
iCloud as though it were a single entity is misleading.

The name iCloud is, in fact, nothing more than an arbitrary label given to a
collection of features, services, settings, and APIs (application programming
 interfaces).

 To answer your question:
Can you have an alias of your iCloud account on your desktop?

 No
Local copies of files you store on iCloud are stored in the Library Mobile
Documents folder in your home folder.

Cloud Mate might be of interest to you.

Cloud Mate adds a Finder-like interface to iCloud, and adds iCloud to the

iCloud is great. iCloud splits all your content up by the app that created
 it.
 iCloud hides your Photo Stream.

Yes... The Home Folder is your User Folder

If this is the case, I do not have either Library and/or Mobile Documents in
my home folder. I'm using OS 10.7.5

The User/Home Library is hidden in Lion Mountain Lion.

To Show Hidden Home Library in Lion Mountain Lion
To view occasionally but keep hidden:
Option-click the Go menu In Lion Mountain Lion
If you Option-click the Go menu, your Library folder magically appears in the

To View permanently:
Change the hidden flag using Terminal Launch Terminal from within your own

Your Library folder is now permanently visible.

To make the folder invisible again, use the command

What are you experiencing Stuart?

What are the two, or more, machines you are using. ie. are they both desktops
using OSX and Mail.app or is one of them an iPad, iPhone etc and using iOS. ?

In Mail.app on OSX, your desktop, look in the grey/blue section on the left and
tell us what the heading is of the folder the recalcitrant email is sitting in?
Is it ON MY MAC, MAILBOXES, ICLOUD or something different.

In the Mail.app menus, go to Mailbox and go down to Sycnronise all accounts.

of relying on communication over the Internet between your Apple devices
(Macs, iOS devices, and Apple TV) and Apple’s servers in the cloud.

Short explanation of 'What is iCloud for':
iCloud helps your devices integrate with each other. If you have more
than one digital device—say, two Macs, or a PC and an iPhone, or an
iPhone and an iPad, or an iPod touch and an Apple TV—it’s only natural to
want all your devices to share many kinds
 of data.
Prior to iCloud, MobileMe let you sync some data (mail, contacts,
calendars, bookmarks) between devices seamlessly, but syncing other types
of data (documents, photos, apps, and media) among all your devices was
 cumbersome and error-prone.
With iCloud, syncing encompasses more kinds of data and requires less
 effort.

In fact, the word “sync” almost becomes an anachronism; for the most
part, iCloud pushes new or changed data almost instantly to all your
 devices.
You can switch between devices with abandon, knowing your data is always
 wherever you need it.

 Hi Stuart,

ALL iCloud email accounts are IMAP email accounts.
This means that when you delete a message from one device, it will be removed

If this is not happening check your Mail Settings.

I have my Mail mail account setup using IMAP, which it sounds like your

Anyway, if I read or delete an email on one device, then it shows up as
read, or deleted, on my other devices.

This only works if you have set up your email to use IMAP.

One thing tho is that this only works for things left in your Inbox, or
Sent, or Deleted, or Drafts - accounts that are stored on the server.

However IF you have transferred an email into an 'ON MY MAC' folder in Mail,
then you can't read, delete or anything with it from another device.

to a collection of features, services, settings,
and APIs (application programming interfaces), joined by a common thread
of relying on communication over the Internet between your Apple devices

Short explanation of 'What is iCloud for':
iCloud helps your devices integrate with each other. If you have more

Prior to iCloud, MobileMe let you sync some data (mail, contacts,

With iCloud, syncing encompasses more kinds of data and requires less

Thank you all for your help!

I think I've said before that explanations, manuals, tutorials etc. rarely
cover it all. You can have one of these fully cover an item but some other
setting may override what your being shown, and unless your aware of this then
the explanation, manual, tutorial etc. just doesn't work.

I used to have a fairly analytical mind but I seem to have lost it as I've aged.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I've got it figured now, time will tell.

Thanks again

How I get around this with the one email account I have that is a POP Account

Therefore I can access my POP email on all my devices during the day.
If I was going to be away for more than a day without all my devices (my MBP,

There is no problem using iCloud, set it up correctly on all your devices and
you won't have any problems.

I have four active email accounts, Contacts Calendar, Photos, syncing to all
my devices... MacBook Pro, iPhone4S, iPad.
