[wdvltalk] RE: [OT] disappearing drive letter
From: Jon Haworth [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Joseph, However, when I restart the letter has gone. Is this because Wndows hates Linux, or should I look in another direction? I don't think you can assign it a drive letter unless it's FAT or NTFS. If it's a Linux partition and you didn't choose any outrageous setup options, it's probably ext2 or ext3. If you haven't already, take a look in Disk Management (right-click My Computer and select Manage) - I imagine the partition will be displayed as unformatted or unrecognised, or possibly damaged if Microsoft are feeling competitive about this. If you boot into Linux and run cfdisk, you should be able to see all your partitions laid out correctly. You may find dual-booting is a lot easier with a second hard drive, as you can do whatever you want to either OS without the worry of screwing up the other one. If you've got a spare 10Gb drive from an old PC lying around then now's the time to get out the screwdriver :-) Cheers Jon Jon, So I'm lucky that Windows keeps the partition letter until the end of the session? I haven't got any Linux OS installed yet, so presumably the fun of getting it all to be happy together has yet to come. If Linux proves a real boon for my needs I will be looking at a second drive. It might all be helped anyway by the new drive that actually has a program in it to grab information logically instead of sequentially; apparently negates the advantage of spin speed. Although it is stall a way from production it seems. [wdvltalk] what links to avoid -- freezing in MySQL?
Following on from Drew's helpful comments: To avoid the difficulty of bloated and therefore inefficient and problem-causing tables it seems obvious to use links and a folder of files. Exisiting blog scripts are not set up for this, of course (or are there ones that are?).And there is a puzzle in how the urls should be written. So two questions. Is there a relatively simple way to adapt a script to take the text from files? Secondly, since the Db is presumably at the same level as the root directory on a regular host server what would be the way to get the script to search there?(I am thinking /... and ../... might not point outside 'root') Joseph Long text does seem to cause all kinds of problems in many places. We've had some horrific driver issues with blog text in Cold Fusion apps. [wdvltalk] RE: [OT] freezing in MySQL
Drew, I have uninstalled everything that has been recently added but there is no change in the problem. However I see that a 'hotfix' was installed by M$ on 15 May.I wonder if uninstalling that might be my answer? Is it likely to be affecting any part of a local server, since it seems to be related to the risk of remote code execution? The Security bulletin is: Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-015 Vulnerability in Help and Support Center Could Allow emote Code Execution (840374) And the part that may be relevant says: Workarounds for Help and support Center Vulnerability - CAN-2004-0199: Microsoft has tested the following workarounds. While these workarounds will not correct the underlying vulnerability, they help block known attack vectors. When a workaround reduces functionality, it is identified below. . Unregister the HCP Protocol. To help prevent an attack, unregister the HCP Protocol by deleting the following key from the registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HCP. To do so, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type regedit, and then click OK. The registry editor program launches. 3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, and then highlight the HCP key. 4. Right-click the HCP key, and then click Delete. What do you think?? Joseph Not so 'Aha...' Still freezing.I have removed all the tables except the controlling 'mysql'.Do I need to reinstall the whole bundle of progams (Easyphp with Apache, MySQL and PHP)?Or just MySQL. Or is there another answer? If, with phpMyAdmin, I open a database I can, variably, open none, one, two, or three tables; but the next table starts to show a limping attempt and then freezes. I can only get back into the databases by restarting the machine. Programs outside the local server do not appear to be affected The local website, Blog and ghostshop all appear to be running (though now moaning about the lack of databases). Joseph ++ Take the blog program off not just the tables. If you've done that and I simple am misunderstanding, then you van put it all back and take off the Via Voice. As usual the help is of no help for a problem. Anyone know what it might be and how to solve it? Help Joseph . The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM . [wdvltalk] RE: [OT] Xp read only
Cheryl, Now things are getting really weird. I had a nice longish post in here about XP Home and the read only setting that is so worrying Joseph and I am not even in table mode but using the keyboard so I don't know how it could have gotten wiped. Summer is icummen in and the gremlins are on the march! With XP Home as long as you are logged in with an account that has sufficient privileges for what you are trying to do it really doesn't matter if the read only attribute is checked in the folder/file permissions. The knowledge base article you referred to is the first time I've seen an even remotely logical explanation. I have two problems - one that does and one that may - relate to this. I sometimes get an otherwise unaccountable refusal to change a file, and that keeps going through a progam session. Simple enough to deal with, but intesely iritating. The other may be preventing writing to databases on the local server. It occurs to me that this may be the latest problem I have with the script I am working on. Though the table files all have 'read-only' clear, the folder does not. In that 'read-only' box I get clear, black tick or grey tick. I have never seen the grey tick in these boxes before, and still have no idea what it means, unless it has to do with permissions. As I have access to the 'administrator' area I should not be getting any limitations on what to do, surely. And I don't have 'use simple file sharing', but that may be because the OS has not been told of any sharing going on. Joseph I'd pretty much not worry about it if you aren't giving remote access to your files. Since I don't think you are on a home network sharing with others it is pretty much immaterial whether or not it is checked. The only time having removing check from use simple file sharing was necessary had to do with database write permissions for the IIS (web server) user to do updates through web forms. Since you are using XP Home and don't have IIS that shouldn't effect you at all. Cheryl D. [wdvltalk] Re: [OT] where is the web
David, It was all very strange. But I had been naughty about updating M$'s creaky new whizz-bang collaXpe OS. And after putting all that on and restarting it was all hunky-dorey. [wdvltalk] Re: Graphic problem
Riva, I don't do much graphics these days, but it may depend on what program your friend is using. Gifs have been around a long time but jpgs, as I recall, were less widely used (and pngs are even more select!). The base standard for almost any graphics program is, I think, bmp. It is also possible that your friend has some setting that blocks jpgs. Or even, though that would be rare these days, that the file is too large for the program. HTH Joseph Hi all, I have a problem with a graphic. A friend of mine got a photograph of someone as an .eps file. She couldn't open it so she sent it to me and I opened it in Photoshop and saved it as a .jpg. I sent it back to her and she can't open it. She keeps getting a blank with a red X in the corner. [wdvltalk] Re: errors setting
Mark, Thanks very much. It is interesting that most of the complaints in the forum on this are that errors are not showing! Anyhow, to further my embarrassment, in following your advice I discovered I had set errors_reporting to 8 in the index.php file - and I can't remember when or why But the thing I now wonder is why the page - with table set in percentages - has decided to stretch to need scrolling both horizontally and vertically Joseph In php.ini in the Apache folder I have set - display_errors = Off - log_errors = On - error_reporting = Off but I am still getting 'notice' errors which distort the layout and don't say anything very useful (now!). If it's PHP errors, just add this snippet at the top of your code: error_reporting(0); That will turn them off per script, there's more here: http://ca.php.net/manual/en/function.error-reporting.php cheers, Mark The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To set a personal password send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the words: set WDVLTALK pw=yourpassword in the body of the email. Then here is a conundrum for you (in the plural). The css would not work correctly in td, but does so in font. [wdvltalk] Re: SCR - www.foulston.com
Tim, That's a nice clean look and downloaded fast enough at the start, and at least kept adding bits as time went on; 56k, Xp, IE6. I am surprised that the blues seem to work as I would normally think the left column colour too deep. I like the 3D effect on the top line. And - I have a crowded browser - there was minimal scrolling on just one page (I think history), otherwise none.. The one thing that doesn't work for me is the Home graphic. It looks like something that would make a good decoration on a large wall, but at this size is a jumble. I have no suggestion since it depends what is wanted, but I don't know what it is saying. HTH Joseph It's been awhile since I've asked for a review, and I just finished putting out a somewhat new look (dropped the top red banner), so I thought I'd have you guys hit it in various browsers and give me your critiques. They wanted news and recent publications moved to the front page, so I've dropped the old splash page (used to be a big map of Kansas) and incorporated their wants, along with cleaning up the left nav a bit and optimizing images. Total download for the front page is now 70k versus the old 207k, so I feel like some progress has been made. All pages validate to HTML 4.01 Transitional. Unfortunately I am required to support Netscape 4 (I test with NN4.07 and NN4.73), so table layout is pretty much required (please, no flames about that...). At this point I'm testing NN4 - NN7, IE5 - IE6, FireFox, Mozilla 1.4, and Opera 5 - Opera 7.12 on a Windows platform. If any of you are running other browsers and notice broken stuff I'd appreciate a screenshot and guesses at what's wrong...the word mac is anathema around here for some reason (we don't have a single one in about 250 computers). Usability suggestions also happily accepted. The left nav is done with mouseover images (the only way I can do it for NN4, and yes, they want mouseovers), so the first page load takes a hard hit but afterwards the menu images are cached and subsequent pages should be faster. I've tried to do everything else with CSS but have yet to move towards semantic markup (I work on a lot of internal stuff too, so everything gets improved slowly). OK Andrew, here it is - I think. This is sessions.php. Errors on other files complain on an undefined _SESSION.With this the content in the main area does not come up. It was messing with this file that caused the problem. Previous errors were about login and admin_access, but the script more or less worked, and it was a matter either of seeing if the variables should be set, or just changing error reporting (which I thought I had already done!). [wdvltalk] Re: css not acting
Cheryl, It's a local machine activity, so I can't, unfortunately. Now that I am well on the way to producing a look that I like I am trying to make sure the script (those parts I will use as the basis of the site) work well, and that I understand enough to develop it. Then I will go on the host server and build it bit by bit. I am looking at three, maybe four, main sections with memberships to at least two, plus fora of some sort. I have a very ambitious idea to offer a 'build your own book' from a database of poems, jokes and so on, and the idea gets more persistent. The other areas will be of matters I know something of which relate vaguely. My puzzzle at the moment is to find the central theme! I am also keen to develop Directories; I have had a family friendly humour one for a long time, and with this machine have the power to work on them. Pity there are only 30 hours in the day. [wdvltalk] Re: SCR: http://www.turtle.ie/test/index.htm
Jac, Overall an attractive and clear look, fast initial load. But a bit of a broken look because of the boxes down both sides. This may be because the blue bg doesn't work (and that is even if it is the same as the lighter part of the top links). Proabably too much blue area at the sides; somehow it fights. The bottom is nice and clean and bright, but may need a closing line (thin blue ;-)). The turtle thumbs are amazingly clear and good pics; might they be better higher up? As I'm looking I am wondering if the blue boxes at the side should be reversed - the top bit in blue bg and the larger part of each link in white? And. 'NEWS EVENTS' catches the eye, but looks wrong; why not do it a bit larger and in the 'IRISH SEA colour? Body type is a bit small, but readable because of the leading (alright, alright, so it's a print term!). Joseph Hi Guys, Need some opinions please... http://www.turtle.ie/test/index.htm Not too sure about all the blue :o) Only the homepage is available there is still some work to be done to that. [wdvltalk] testing a site
The step to building the site I am planning is not exactly around the corner! But it is time for me to think about the best way to test the new ideas out. Is it best to do this through a sub folder on the existing site? Is it possible to hire space on a host before having the domain available? Is there some free way to go through the build and test stage? Or am I best off to buy a new domain and hire space? If I do the last what would be the best way to keep the traffic that the old domain has? Scott, You are right, and what you suggest is an improvement (just repeating to myself 'How did you miss the lack of verb? Huh?') But now Will 'scenarios' and 'dimensions' look awkward. How about From business cards to Highway (here it would be 'road') signs we know print and design; and we have many examples to show you. The urgency of the present tense verb works well, though you probably need to tweak the suggestion above to get exactly what you want. Joseph printdesign page: -From little business cards to huge highway road signs, we have faced many scenarios and many print dimensions. semi-colon or dash would be better than comma. Disagree. From little business cards to huge highway road signs is not an independent clause (where's the verb?), therefore a semi-colon is inappropriate. In fact, the comma used is perfectly correct. I think that I would reverse the structure, though, to have We have faced many scenarios and many print dimensions, from little business cards to huge highway road signs. Personally, I think I would prefer experience with or experience in over faced, thus We have experience in many scenarios and many print dimensions, from little business cards to huge highway road signs. [wdvltalk] RE: php include oddity in foreach statement
Jon, That is really helpful; some of it I had picked up, and it confirms it and makes it orderly. Funny, I was nervous about removing quotes from DOCUMENT ROOT and its brethren, but increasingly I am thinking this is a code full of little gremlins having fun! I can't see a missing quote a first glance, but now I have to go out so I'll come back to it later, and maybe spot straight away. I wonder if all the errors in this script mean it wasn't tested properly, of if it means that each environment for php/mysql has its own little tricks? Joseph Joseph, And I have had to take more quotes away! PHP's quote handling is a bit strange and can take some getting to grips with :-) Strings inside double quotes are parsed, meaning you can do this sort of thing: // my pet is a cat $pet = cat; echo my pet is a $pet.; Strings inside single quotes aren't parsed, so you can do this: // my pet is a $pet $pet = cat; echo 'my pet is a $pet.'; If you want to show the variable, you have to concatenate it: // my pet is a cat $pet = cat; echo 'my pet is a '. $pet; This extends to pretty much everything: // new // line echo new\nline; // new\nline echo 'new\nline'; Single quotes are a *tiny* bit faster, but the big advantage of using them is that you don't end up with messy escape characters. For example: echo table width=\100%\ cellpadding=\0\ border=\0\; To stop the PHP interpreter thinking your echo statement ends at any of the quotes in the HTML, you have to escape them with the backslash. If you use single quotes you sidestep this neatly: echo 'table width=100% cellpadding=0 border=0'; When you're accessing arrays you can use either, but again single quotes will be slightly faster: // either of these will work $foo = $bar[baz]; $foo = $bar['baz']; Just to through a spanner in the works, there are some constants that will work in arrays without any quotes - they're easy to spot though, as they're usually in capitals (like DOCUMENT_ROOT). unexpected $end in c:\easyphp1-7\www\books.php on line 118 the closing '?' is line 117 You're probably missing a semicolon somewhere :-) Cheers Jon The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To set a personal password send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the words: set WDVLTALK pw=yourpassword in the body of the email. Jon, Just to update. It was a missing single quote at the end of an echo line. Now I get the error appropriate to the fact that the script can't access Amazon, which is as it should be. [wdvltalk] RE: php include oddity in foreach statement
Stephen, I'm using html-kit which is probably similar, using colour and bold to show what is happening. Of course it needs me to know what it is signifying, which is beginning to happen! But the quotes do not stand out, though sometimes the part affected is visible by being the wrong colour. But it is the old problem of when it is not there one needs to know it should be! I do seriously need to visit the optician; there is just that slight loss of definition, and I was set up with reading, monitor and other glasses, but my eyes seem to change with some regularity - sometimes the change is improvement! Code, of course, needs a high definition. --- And that has made me search to make the face larger;12pt is quite good. Perhaps I'll spot the typos more easily - and work out the script author's errors with less aggro! Code completion sound good, so I'll have a look. Off to Google.. [wdvltalk] Re: php classes trip
Dave, Thanks for the answer. I see the point and the manual is (fairly) clear. But this is where I am at the moment include_once($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/classes/clsMetaContent.php' ); (Now I guessed I might not have converted $_SERVER correctly, but I am lost !) and it produces this: parse error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING I have put it in the comon.php file, which is where clsMetaContent.php is called from, and that from layout.php. I would have thought the repetition problem was the same for the other pages that do work. The include_once(), as I have done it, gives all pages the parse error. Joseph On Thursday 15 April 2004 23:10, Smile-Poet wrote: Three appear to work as intended; so why should the fourth bring up this: Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class meta in c:\easyphp1-7\www\classes\clsMetaContent.php on line 5 line 5 is merely '{' following line 4: Class meta. Bj wroteSheesh. What's the world coming to, when absolute beginners with no programming background are supposed to be figuring out classes. I think it's called 'The Deep End Philosophy'. This is the only one that is happy: include_once($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] . '/classes/clsMetaContent.php'); but now it has switched tack to: Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class email in c:\easyphp1-7\www\classes\clsEmail.php on line 3 which isn't part of this operation at all! But, I have done include_once() for that. So that moves us to: Fatal error: Cannot redeclare login_check() (previously declared in c:\easyphp1-7\www\includes\session.php:14) in c:\easyphp1-7\www\includes\session.php on line 13 and line 13 is the first line of this: function login_check(){ if($_SESSION['login'] != TRUE){ myheader(Login Required); include $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']. '/html/forms/login_form.html'; changing the include to include_once($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']. '/html/forms/login_form.html'); doesn't seem to clear it! I would be pleased if there is an answer to this. If there is none, or if the answer doesn't clear it up, it looks as though the fault must lie in or near to the file(a form) called by this link.As I am inching towards the intended outcome of this script (though there seem a number of login and security issues to resolve) I get some confidence. I can at least understand the headings in the manual! Joseph I have found, also, that IE clutches its internet files like a crab holding its prey; I have to clear them continually. Until I discovered it, it was the cause of more than a few of the headaches!!! But this is where I am at the moment include_once($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/classes/clsMetaContent.php' ); Try either of: include_once($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']/classes/clsMetaContent.php); or include_once($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] . '/classes/clsMetaContent.php'); In other words - either a string containing a var, $var/other text, or a string created by concatenating a var and a string value $var . '/other text' - but you've got quotes inside other quotes, the way you have it now, which is some unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE instead of a T_STRING or a T_VARIABLE :o) Sheesh. [wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update
Joseph, so how does this help you? We've all had years of experience fixing our own code and the code of others, and we are still learning. I wonder if it would have been best for you to have searched the various code respositories for an application, for example hotscripts.com. If I understand correctly, you don't really need to learn PHP, you just need an application that works for your particular project. The scripts online, versus those from a book, have the advantage of being tested online. If you limit yourself to recent releases there are fewer problems. Sheila Sheila, The answer is this is very interesting to me too.Your (all of you) years of experience shine through, as I have been trying to say. What you are not seeing from my angle is the quality of the teaching that this list offers, and the depth of knowledge which is here. Though there is some truth in the idea that a script from a good source would probably meet my needs, there are two caveats. Or three. First how would I recognise such a script? Second, if I took such a script and used it would I have the faintest idea how to deal with anything that went wrong? And by that I mean even understanding what the problem was. Third, without any understanding of the code I would have no concept of its possibilities, or the possibilities it opened up. Nor of its limitations. The web is changing in many ways all the time. As with most digitally based matters there is a rapid 'democratising' as it becomes easier and easier to achieve various tasks. Gates and Windows, for all the possible criticisms, show this quite dramatically. The development of one more accessible code after another underlines this too. PHP makes for an easy entry to coding - at least in comparison to the Cs and a few others that strike me dumb. While it has taken me much longer than I hoped, I have now a basic awareness (I hesitate to say understanding) of how PHP is written and what kind of thing it can do. It is possible that fighting this book has made me do this quicker than might have been the case! I have just been looking at another 'sign-up' code and see that it approaches it with different variables as in '5 ways of doing anything in php'. While I don't really want to write my own code, I do want to fit codes together to achieve a plan or two that I have for my site; and I have to get the site going along those (hopefully, paying) lines before I will be in a position to employ those who really know how to do all the expert things so I can write poetry! Meanwhile, if you don't mind me tagging along and tugging at your coat tails from time to time, I am pleased to find myself in such sompany. And I still think there is a case for a joint book and site written by members of this list (you didn't think I'd miss a chance to mention it, did you?). Had I been allowed to do radar when I did National Service in the RAF (that dates me!) I might well have diverted into electronics and be sporting a list like the one Bj revealed. But they put me in statistics and I never looked forward. ;-) Joseph The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To set a personal password send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the words: set WDVLTALK pw=yourpassword in the body of the email. [wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update
I realise that I am not going to convince those on the list who really do know their MySQL/PHP from their 'embonpoint' to get to gether for a book (apart from rudy). But all the, very useful, pieces of information, like Don's, really underlines my point. 'Kinda pricey' for example; and the suggestions are of many different offerings - all of which are very good, I am sure. But O'Reilly is said to be out of adate, and at the speed of php development, it very difficult to keep hard copy up to date. That is why I suggested something for web code that is very web oriented. That is a book, and a site for updating. Please tell me that, even thought I can't interest you, you think it an idea that could have mileage. Joseph Sheila-- If anyone knows of good PHP book, for beginners, please speak up. I get asked this question all the time. The O'Reilly book might be OK but it's [snip] The blokes at Sitepoint.com have a two-book set titled THE PHP ANTHOLOGY. Volume 1 is Foundations. Volume 2 is Applications. Kinda pricey but good info. The Visual Quickstart series has a couple of good ones on PHP but they're suffering from being based on older data like the O'Reilly book. That, and some of the forums on Internet.com, w3schools, and a few other places are moving me down the PHP road. [wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update
drew, That's an impressive list. But are these for true beginners, or for people with other coding skills? I think php is so flexible, relatively easy, and developing so fast that people will be going straight to it, rather than adding it after the hard slog of learning and using serious coding. (That's a compliment folks, and a touching of the forelock - if i still had one - to the professionalism of this list.) The web is still expanding very fast. The nature of it encourages people to dive in and get on with it. Like me many will want to implement practical projects rather than become php pupils per se. That was the attraction of the book I have been tripping up on. That book also reveals (through its failures) better ways to do it. And many will not want to, or not be able to, attend classes. (I've just realised how hard I'm selling the idea. It must be because I have experienced how well you all teach) Joseph -Original Message- From: Sheila Fenelon [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, April 05, 2004 6:43 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update Bj wrote: Joseph, you almost make me want to write a php book just for you, however I am sure there are good ones out there. Bj, A two-in-one: never buy Version 1 of *anything*. *now* he tells me! He is not trying to teach you - he is trying to show off how clever he is, and unfortunately for him, simply demonstrating how clever he isn't :-/ Wise words Bj. - Original Message - From: Smile-Poet if ($_SESSION['admin_access'] == true) { Insert before that line: if (!isset($_SESSION['admin_access'])) { echo Session variable 'admin_access' has not been initialised, so no point in continuing with the program. Apparently the clever instructor has missed out the code where the user logs in, their details are looked up in the database and the session variable 'admin_access' is set to either 0 or 1 as appropriate. Goodbye.; exit; } And I'll give that a try. And it came up beautifully; so the 'echo' works! I do admire your persistence, Joseph, honestly I do. That's very kind.At least I know a bit more now about MySQL and PHP. In fact, I rather think the plan he has used is quite good, and if the missing file comes (which probably includes setting up the session) the whole thing will work in a unified way. So far as I can test bits and pieces it does what he says. As a one time sub-editor I imagine that he did not do the one thing that is essential for such a book, which is to have someone work through a proof copy to make sure everything is there, and that it all works. Also I think he has been a whiz kid, but doesn't realise that at 28 he's past the point of being forgiven his mistakes... In searching for his address I see he has been showing off his expertise for at least four years. Have you come across Eric Rosebrock? Well, better get a bit more done. [wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update
Sheila, I honestly think that the best people to write a php book are the experts of wdvltalk. I can test it for you, and, as you have seen, if there is anything you have not made crystal clear I will not be able to make it work ;-) In the course of my travails I realised how real the point you make about quick-changing php. I think it would be essential - and appropriate - for a book about web coding to have an up-dating site. Anyone using the book must be online, so it is natural to offer a term membership for buying the book. Now if I can ever get Eric's script to work it would be perfect for such a site I am serious, by the way. Do the experts (*you know* who you are) want to write a book?A collaboration would be good; balance the strengths and weaknesses. Have expert editors checking the script... perfect. Joseph Bj wrote: Joseph, you almost make me want to write a php book just for you, however I am sure there are good ones out there. If anyone knows of good PHP book, for beginners, please speak up. I get asked this question all the time. The O'Reilly book might be OK but it's 2 yrs old now and PHP has changed a lot in that time. That's another problem with publishing books on web technology, things change and traditional books go out of date quickly. OK.AVG says no viruses. The message has now moved to 'deleted items' and there is a message. Joseph (And I have emptied the deleted items folder) I have just received a mail with From: 243306 @ msn... Subject: Receipt of Payment it is 2Kb. I went to delete it but is wouldn't move from the inbox and then appeared to bring OE to a halt. I had to restart to stop whatever it was up to. The message window was blank. Sheila, Yes, I've just read, 'enum' is not for 'number'(!) but is a string so the quotes are needed. Thanks for spotting it. ---And YES it worked. Peter, No, I don't have the problem, but you may have saved me from it!I have an update disc from M$ for Xp; now I am wondering if I should run it.I know they have gone from being sloppy to being suspicious of everything. But I have just changed an Outlook Express setting to let attachments through; I wonder if IE has some similar over-protective setting that can be unticked? Perhaps in custom settings under internet options - but I'm sure you've checked that. Joseph I'm using IE 6.0. Ever since I updated the patches for W2000 and anything else advised my Microsoft via their website a couple of weeks ago, I'm seeing constant problems of IE shutting down for no obvious reason and sending Error reports. I've run Norton diagnostics and that says there is nothing wrong. It's infuriating when surfing for info to get four or five shutdowns and having to keep going back to find the site I was on. [wdvltalk] sessions - 'undefined '
Having learnt a bit and solved a few problems (ahem! typos, too) I find myself stuck here - sort of superglobal superglue. As part of a membership system there is the line ?php if($_SESSION['login'] == true){ which is bringing this into the browser(IE6) Notice: Undefined index: login in c:\easyphp1-7\www\boxes\member_box.php on line 13 The book suggests the work around for IE is to set session_cache_limiter to none in php.ini. I found it already set to 'no cache', but changed it to 'private' since this line: header(Cache-control: private); //fix for IE is put in the session.php file for this purpose. The script should do some error checking for missing input (or whatever else it requires). I have identified things like '.' instead of'';' and things like this $_REQUEST which I haven't yet confidence to challenge. It is possible that it is an adaptation of a set of scripts he describes creating for a phone directory site. If he didn't then test it can be full of errors of course. Sheila, I am at the stage a bit like the nascent swimmer made to take his feet off the bottom; I've done that and I still can't swim! Hope to do better with this ;-). First the form. This will - I haven't got to it - be called by a php script so the php should be read then. If not 'I'll be back'. I follow the principle of the isset code, but don't yet grasp the code itself. I don't know how much of the script to show you, but here is the first twenty or so lines. I have already needed to set the top variables and have now changed the $_REQUEST back for you to see:: ?php include $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/layout.php'; //set some variables $email_error = false; $password_error = false; switch ($_REQUEST['req']) { case process : // code to process signup input and place in database myheader(Become a member: step 2); //Validate all required fields were posted if(!$_POST['first_name'] || !$_POST['last_name'] || !$_POST['email_address'] || !$_POST['email_address2'] || !$_POST['username'] || !$_POST['password'] || !$_POST['password2'] || !$_POST['bio']){ $error = true; $errors = h4Form Input Errors:. /h4\n\n; if (!$_POST['first_name']) { $errors .= Missing first Name\n; } if (!$_POST['last_name']) { $errors .= Missing Last Name\n; } I also came across the point that use of $_REQUEST has security issues, but imagine that is if it is overused rather than used where it is the best option. Joseph Bj wrote: - Original Message - From: Smile-Poet The problem is that this (the 'value=' ' entry) appears on the form: ?=$_POST['last_name'];? Better would be to test if $_REQUEST['req'] exists and assign a value to a variable based on the result. if (isset($_REQUEST['req']) { $myRequest = $_REQUEST['req']; } else { $myRequest = 'somevalue'; } Then change the switch variable switch ($myRequest) { Note that 'somevalue' needs to be the actual value needed to make the form display empty. Time to download a new .chm file I think Sorry Joseph New or old it is still mostly Greek to me :-o. My copy is the up to date one and there certainly is a lot about changes. If I understand rightly the objective is to make this do the job any other script can do, but in plainer English. And the changes are going to come thick and fast. I certainly do not think I would even have attempted anything more difficult. And I am trying to run (limp haltingly) before I can walk. I find your advice very helpful, and even if there is error the discussion of it brings clarity. As I am not at a class I find these discussions a refreshing aid to learning. [wdvltalk] Re: sendmail, qmail
Mark, Bj, Sheila, Thank you all for bringing clarity to this one (though some mails, including Sheila's, haven't landed here yet! I think I have inferred the gist of the discussion from the four mails I've read.). I am going back into the php book/tutorial/website-scripts and knew I would quickly hit the sendmail part of this (as part of a membership signup page) and wondered how I might deal with it on this windows PC. Last time it threw up errors. I have also plans for some complex mail sending and lists and was looking for the best answer when I get to that (in about 2020 at the present rate of progress :-( ). It is a relief that the mail sending is not another thing that needs to be learnt (I'll settle for whatever my host offers together with list management somwhere) though sending from the local PC would give plenty of control (stand up who said 'control freak'). Joseph Sheila commented: Whoa there Bj, I think you got some bad information somewhere. Sorry if it sounded like I said sendmail() no longer exists, as it is indeed still a core function of Unix servers - and maybe php itself, as a program, does call it on Unix servers to implement its mail() function - but to the php *programmer*, that much is invisible. Only the server administrator has to know how php actually works - the programmer just calls on mail() to send messages. And in fact with safe mode implemented, I know of no way for a php script to explicitly call sendmail. And, with a local set such as Apache/Mysql/php, can mails be sent without the need for a mail service which is normally the smtp gate. I realise they are capable of handling mail in volume and lists, but so far can't quite grasp their role.In other words what do they do for mails that I would send from my machine or from the website? What you're probably wondering is Do I have to put my script up on a Web host to send email from a php script, or can I send from a script running on my local PC with apache/mysql/php? On a Windows PC (as opposed to a Windows server) you don't normally run a local SMTP server, although as Sheila points out many viruses include their own, and use it to send out new infected emails, so obviously if you found and installed the right software it could be done. But with the usual setup, if you were testing a script containing mail() on your local PC, you'd get an error because there would be no default SMTP server for mail() to pass on the messages to. If you installed Windows 2000 server edition you could have IIS, SMTP and all kindsa goodies, and send tons of mail direct from your very own PC. You might also be able to set things up so that php scripts running on your local PC used your ISP's SMTP server to send out mail, not sure how, but you might. Maybe I'll have a look over on php.net and see if there is any information on that. In the book I am trying to 'learn and make' from this is an input line from a sign up form. td align=left valign=topinput id=last_name name=last_name type=text value=?=$_POST['last_name'];? //td As you can see the value is given some php code, but this appears in the input window, which seems odd.Is there a reason for putting php code there? Or is there some other point I am missing, like a security value or a complex check system? I can't see the practice in any other sign up script I've looked at. Joseph wondering why it is all uphill. Rudy, I have just applied SELECT cust_name, cust_address AS cust_address1, ( concat( coalesce( cust_city, '' ) , coalesce( cust_state, '' ) , coalesce( cust_zip, '' ) ) ) AS cust_address2, cust_country AS cust_address3 FROM `customers` as you advised a few days ago but it has produced this ColumbusOH4-- without commas or spaces. [wdvltalk] Re: OT: Eudora Problem
Deb, You encourage me to give Eudora another try. I do want to keep my website addresses separate, and that worked well before (when it was working). It will be on a different machine too, so that might make a difference. Joseph Hi, I didn't see the beginning of this thread so not positive what the whole issue is - but it sounds like you can't send mail. Here is a possible fix. If you are using your own SMTP setting - some ISP's will now allow this. You could try resetting your SMTP to your ISP's SMTP. YOu could also try contacting your ISP and see if there's something they changed or ask if they might investigate on their end. I'm experiencing extensive email problems right now (use Eudora) but I get error msgs so this info might be totally useless to you for your problem, however changing the SMTP only takes a moment to try. [wdvltalk] Re: OT: Eudora Problem-Joseph
Deb, Absolutely no offence taken; there is endless discussion on most of these issues, and often being told or reminded of some simple point proves the answer. I have tried to give up OE many times, but its simplicity and range and (alas) reliability keeps it in play. I'll let you know what happens when I give Eudora another try. I tried Bloomba (which archives uniquely for a mail client) but it too proved limited (in my hands anyway). Joseph At 03:00 AM 3/17/2004, you wrote: Deb, You encourage me to give Eudora another try. I do want to keep my website addresses separate, and that worked well before (when it was working). It will be on a different machine too, so that might make a difference. Joseph I understand, I don't want to give up Eudora either. I was just talking w/a friend tonight who suggested I setup Outlook at least to test and see if Eudora might be the culprit - I told her that if I was on my deathbed and Outlook was the only email program on the face of the earth I would switch to using the phone rather than set up Outlook. I know there are faithful loving Outlook users all over the world and I'm not trying to insult them as I know they are happy with it. I just don't need to add the virus magnet to my computer and that is my sole reasoning behind my decision. I did try Netscape mail just to test out the theory it might be Eudora and I also installed a 2nd version of Eudora in another folder and tested that. Both other email programs gave the same results - it's NOT Eudora causing my problem. Now, there may be people who do have problems w/Eudora and so my suggestions may have no merit and it could very well be Eudora in your case or theirs, but I would not dump it unless it was the last resort. I would also make sure there are no error messages anywhere, they pop up on the bottom of my Eudora screen. Might try setting up a fake SMTP and try sending just to see if you get an error message which you should. Example: smtp.ee.com (I doubt there's a domain named e.com out there but you could check first). That way you will see an actual error msg if you've not already seen Eudora throw one and you will know what to look for. I say this only because I'm thinking you might be very new to Eudora and not know where to look. I don't mean to offend your intelligence. Deb . The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM . [wdvltalk] Re: Further to CONCAT
I am following the conversation and it is helping greatly in expanding my awareness; I am sure others working through the php/mysql learning zone would agree. Thank you Rudy for the additional points on extracting addresses. I didn't make it clear then as the book had been hurled through the window at that point (not really, it's too cold at the moment to open the window). Bj, A main reason for coming back on this point (and I'll do the same on others, as they arise) is that there are quite a few who teach on the list. I am finding all tutorials falling short of their stated aims; I have no access to advice other than this list. For that reason my experience and feelings about ploughing through may be of help in constructing courses and articles (I know Sheila is planning something). You are right about the table, and I already wondered why one should use NULL values. But this table was a 'given' and downloaded as a basis for the SQL course book. There is, too, a vast difference between someone learning these codes with ASP or C++ or other coding experience and one - like me - who has managed some html and css and just basic ssi. One thing, for example, that is extremely depressing, is the advice (or only option) time after time to refer to the manual. Only now am I coming out of the stage where the manuals are gobbledegook. An experienced user, I am sure, sees them as invaluable references - as I soon shall. Because different SQLs are developed differently there are gulfs between the syntax and keywords and functions that are totally confusing, and without the kindness of you and Rudy and others I for one would have found the inadequacy of the literature enough to stop me in my tracks. When, worse, a 'comprehensive' tutorial using the same forms of coding (mysql/php) throws up errors the frustration becomes a solid thing! But that is for a little later. Once I have MySQL moderately understood I will be better placed to get back to that. [wdvltalk] Re: now it's dates
Rudy, Here is the query SELECT `order_date` FROM `orders` WHERE to_days('2001-01-01') - to_days(`order_date`) = 365; There are five entries in the column that fall in the year 2001; the tutorial offers DATEPART, to_number and to_date variations (with their various syntaxes) but all bring up errors in MySQL. 'to_days' was the only thing I could find in the MySQL manual which seemed to deal with dates within a time period. And Rudy is right Howard, the quote marks don't solve it; but thanks for the advice. Joseph to_days(2001-01-01)-to_days(order_date) =365. joseph, what are you trying to do? if you have order dates in 2001 or later, that expression will always be true, simply because to_days(2001-01-01) will be less than to_days(order_date) and so the result will be negative and therefore always less than 365 The query is executed successfully, but hte five entries it should catch are not printed out. I'm tiring (all right, all right -- I mean I'm getting tired!). This worked: SELECT `order_date` FROM `orders` WHERE to_days( '2001-01-01' ) - to_days( `order_date` ) = 365 It needed both the quotes (thanks Howard) and the right operator =.I progress... as through treacle... but I progress. Thanks, too, Rudy for keeping an eye on me. Joseph (pretty colours, aren't they?) In MySQL, date values need quotes around them. [wdvltalk] Re: $_POST and access questions
Bj, You lightened my mood. Yes I have noticed that this tutorial has some errors, and I did wonder how complex he'd made it.I found another tutorial on phpfreaks.com, dealing with a similar project, and substituted some of that. It worked well till that tutorial left me floundering -- I am trying to sort a problem to do with VALUES syntax, and can't find the rules at this moment!!! I suppose I am finding these surrogate code parents have feet of clay. I think I have looked at most available tutorials and conclude I still need simply written stuff which does it all for me until I can start to recognise what it is doing. I am using HTML-Kit and phpMyAdmin to write and check, and IE6 as the browser. I am relieved that you find the complex bit complex; I feel slightly less of an idiot. But hey, who needs tutorials when php and mySQL are so easy. Why not just find a real project and learn while you do it. You mean it's *not* plug and play? Seriously I couldn't get my head round the tutorials and had to go at it another way . And the Manuals, as references, are just unmanageable - at least in any format I've found them. Perhaps I'll get some time to sit down for a spell and really concentrate on it soon. Thanks for brinigng clarity and light Bj. Joseph Hi Joseph First a dsiclaimer, in view of my closing remark, I apologise in advance for any inadvertent slips in the following code... :-) This:'{$_POST['username']}' ),0); in the SELECT query is the fault with the other problem, but I cannot work out what is wrong with it. So far I haven't discovered a reference or an example which makes the problem clear, let alone the solution. I'm sure very few experienced programmers would write a complex statement like that, and definitely not in an example for beginners to follow. Far better practice is to break things down into simple steps rather than string them together into an indecipherable lump (er... let's leave regular expressions out of this for now...) Try rewriting: # Verify if username already exists # 1. Build the query $query = SELECT_COUNT(*) AS ucount . FROM book_mydb.members . WHERE members.username = . '{$_POST['username']}' ; # [Incidentally I have no idea what the { } curly # brackets are doing here...] # To help debugging, display the query at this point # so you know what you are asking the db print Query is : $querybr\n; # 2. Execute the query: $result = mysql_query($query); # Check for a mySQL error: if mysql_error() print Error: . mysql_error() . br\n; else { # 3. Get the result of the query $_ucount = mysql_result($result,0); } Note that I wouldn't ever use mysql_result myself, as I prefer (as good programming!) mysql_fetch_row and mysql_fetch_array. More than ever I am convinced you are trying to learn from someone who is an incompetent programmer, as well as a poor teacher and careless typist. There are some great php and mySQL tutorials on WDVL as well as DevShed But hey, who needs tutorials when php and mySQL are so easy. Why not just find a real project and learn while you do it. . [wdvltalk] Re: $_POST and access questions
Sheila, First let me say thank you for the support and help; I am most gratefulto you and everybody else who contirbutes to my education. I am just not in a position to attend any classes (not that I know of any round here) at present. The 'Look!Isn't php/mysql simple' intros are fine, but only take one to the point of recognising what is going on. I haven't found any of the books recommended a few weeks ago, so am trying to plough ahead. Only in the past day or so have I firmly realised that my guides are of the 'one-eyed man' type. Now I need a fairly simple syntax reference... That sent me back to what are already copious notes, but not - alas! - a syntax reference, which I have seen somewhere, before I knew its value. I can say that what you and Bj have written now makes sense to me, a week ago it would not! That is why I turned to another tutorial/script to amend the one I asked about. (At the moment it is on the other machine on which I cannot yet burn CDs - don't ask and no floppy drive - so won't show the script (from phpfreaks.com) which seems much simpler and more elegant, turning the form entries into variables, before doing the processes. I have taken on board the use of dots and will seek to utilise that. And will shortly test that simplified version you have given me. I know there may also be problems with the updating of php; no doubt some scripts have not kept pace. Good luck with writing the lessons; there must be many like me (and more to come) looking for bridges, in forms that are easy to understand, between the intros and the complex and 'faulty' scripts . Joseph Bj wrote: Try rewriting: # Verify if username already exists # 1. Build the query $query = SELECT_COUNT(*) AS ucount . Where did the underscore come from? Should be a space. FROM book_mydb.members . WHERE members.username = . '{$_POST['username']}' ; # [Incidentally I have no idea what the { } curly # brackets are doing here...] The curly brackets let you put assoc arrays inside double quotes and not confuse the parser. They mark the beginning and end of the variable. As long as we are using dot to concatenate the strings we can leave {} out: $query = SELECT COUNT(*) AS ucount . FROM book_mydb.members . WHERE members.username = ' . $_POST['username'] . ' ; Note the single quotes needed for SQL (to the right of = ) have been shifted to neigboring stings. It's not even necessary to use all those double quotes, this will work just fine: $query = SELECT COUNT(*) AS ucount FROM book_mydb.members WHERE members.username = ' . $_POST['username'] . ' ; More than ever I am convinced you are trying to learn from someone who is an incompetent programmer, as well as a poor teacher and careless typist. I agree. There is a lot of badly written code floating around the net that just gets duplicated over and over again. Sheila PS: I teach Intro to PHP at EclecticAcademy.com Teaching someone else to code is not easy. I mainly try to provide examples of what I consider good programming practices and hope the designers that take my class become comfortable enough with PHP to make minor changes to scripts. I hope to add a PHP/MySQL class but it's a lot of work writing good lessons. -- Sheila Fenelon http://www.shefen.com The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To set a personal password send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the words: set WDVLTALK pw=yourpassword in the body of the email. [wdvltalk] Re: $_POST and access questions
Sheila and Robin, Thanks very much. You were right about the variable *not* having been defined; I'm a bit closer to understanding and being able to watch out for that! This:'{$_POST['username']}' ),0); in the SELECT query is the fault with the other problem, but I cannot work out what is wrong with it. So far I haven't discovered a reference or an example which makes the problem clear, let alone the solution. [wdvltalk] RE: Password problem on mysql
Paul, It took me 10 days to get round to it, but try as I might I am still blocked from access. I wonder if the information is in the registry, and so can't be overwritten without changing that; which I am not going to try! But I have just copied the db folders from one machine to the other, and they are working whre I need them. For anybody else setting up Easyphp1-7 I do recommend Rod's Guide http://www.canowhoopass.com/guides/easyphp/ Which I read and follwed for the second installation. It saved me the grief I had in the first!!! [wdvltalk] RE: Password problem on mysql
Paul, Thanks for the suggestion.I followed this, then did it again with emptying recycle bin at the appropriate point but still got the error. I'll be setting up the new machine and will put a fresh install on that. This time I'll try to make sure I do the password at the right time in the right way! Of course, I am assuming it is the password that causes the error, though I can't see where it can still reside after a full or partial re-install. Still, I have already been sitting in front of a monitor too long to expect every problem to have an answer! Peter, I have had a few subscriptions halted for bounced mails - this to a mailbox which is used for under a hundred mails a day and has over 20Mb of space. I find downloads of files to be slow at the moment, too. Also 'can't find page' when a 'refresh' or click on 'go' brings it up - though a bit slowly. There is a suspicion they are loss leading but of course it cannot be proved. Peter MacGregor At 14:54 18/02/2004, you wrote: Peter, Intriguing. I tried Emercgency vehicle manufacturers uk. Nice one Janet. I have asked for it free! It might solve my problem of having mails acrss three programs don't ask. Joseph Hi- Just reading the current issue of Fast Company. Article features Bloomba which they regard as the potential successor to Outlook. They call it the google of email as it uses search capability to eliminate the need for folders for organizing email messages. It has a companion product that is a spam filter. Anyone use Bloomba? Tom, Just had a quick look at your 'what's new' page. At the bottom the tooltip to the 'what's new' links comes up behind the entity 7 - Web design banner. I assume this is the effect of layers. Here it looks like the difficulty of the banner floating above a coloured box which partners the coloured box with the text links. Is there a way round this? Without a lot of work, that is. [wdvltalk] sql table logic
Mainly I think to Rudy for kind comment. Having now started to understand some of the tutorials and grasped some part of the logic of table structure and information retrieval I have set out some tables. If it is possible can you say whether these look along the right lines? For the poetry database: Main table: POEMS Poem_id, title, date_written, date_update[NULL] Classification tables: a number with the simple structure: LIMERICK Lim_id, poem_id HAIKU haiku_id, poem_id etc Publishing: PUBLISH publish_id, poem_id, bookspp_id [NULL], magspw_id[NULL], book_other_id[NULL], mag_other_id[NULL] BOOKSPP book_id, book_name MAGSPW magspw_id, mag_no, mag_date BOOK_OTHER book_other_id, book_other_name, book_other_publisher, book_other_address[NULL], book_other_email [NULL], book_other_fax[NULL}, book_other_phone[NULL], book_contact1_id[NULL], book_contact2_id[NULL] MAGS_OTHER (same columns as book_other) contacts: BOOK_CONTACT book_contact_id, book_other_id, book_contact_name[NULL], (book_contact) _address[NULL], _email[NULL], _fax[NULL], _phone[NULL], _change[NULL] MAGS_CONTACT (same columns as book_contact) submission record: SUBMIT submit_id, poem_id, submit_date, response_date[NULL], accept_date[NULL], reject_date[NULL], payment_offer[NULL], payment_receipt[NULL], payment_amt[NULL] BANKED banked_id, submit_id, date, amount ACCEPTED accept_id, submit_id, acceptance_date, publication_date, payment_due_date, payment_receipt_ref(publisher's)[NULL], overdue_note[NULL] book sales: BOOK_SALES_OTHER book_sales_other_id, bookspp_id[NULL], outlet_id, no_sold[NULL], value OUTLET outlet_id, name, type, outlet_contact_id OUTLET_CONTACT (as BOOK_CONTACT) BOOK_SALES book_sales_id, book_spp_id, sale_date, sale_value And I assume it is possible to have a script to automatically fill in the last table as sales occur. [wdvltalk] Re: sql table logic
Bj, Got it! I am sure you have given a similar explanation to someone else not so long ago. The thing that hadn't quite connected is entering an item to be classified more than once into a table. That will do exactly what I want, which is to be able to list and/or count all poems of a particular type. And I realise Rudy is pointing me to that on the publishing tables. Hey ho, back to the drawing board just as a threatening cold is making me take various dulling liquids (any virtual scotch going, michael?). There are lots of refinements in this, aren't there? Thanks, Joseph - Original Message - From: Joseph, Smile Poet Classification tables: a number with the simple structure: LIMERICK Lim_id, poem_id HAIKU haiku_id, poem_id Let's have a quick run through relational databases shall we? You have a bunch of poem classifications. Each can match many poems. You have a bunch of poems. Each may fir into more than one class. Therefore you need three tables: one to list the classes, one to list the poems, and one to list the links between the two: POEMS CLASS-INDEXCLASSES poem-id --- poem-id poem-nameclass-id --- class-id poem-dateclass-name poem-author Thus there is one entry in class-index for every fit between a poem and the classes of poems. Given the following examples: poem classes: 1 - Limerick 2 - Haiku 3 - Doggerel 4 - Comic Verse ...the following poem could fit #2, 'Haiku', as well as #4, 'Comic Verse':: Three things are certain: Death, taxes, and lost data. Guess which has occurred. So, in class-index you make two records, one with the id of the above poem and class-id = 2, and another where class-id = 4. Then you write nice complicated SQL queries for Rudy to improve on, like: SELECT poem-name, poem-author FROM poems, class-index WHERE poems.poem-id = class-index.poem-id AND class-id = 4 In other words you can find all the poems whose id appears in the index table against the id of a given class. This is definitely more correct than having a field in the poems table for class that can say limerick or haiku, comic verse and doing a search for poems where that field contains haiku, even though that works just as well really :-) The best way to design your database is, erm, a bit like Access does it looks guilty You draw little boxes on a sheet of paper, one box for each table, with the table name at the top and the names of the columns (fields) underneath inside the box. Then you draw little arrows that join up the boxes to indicate the relationships between them. If my attempted diagram above reads the same in your email client as it does in mine, you should get the idea. Each table should (ideally) have one value that uniquely identifies each individual row (record) and then you look to see if any of the fields can be moved out to another table, as we have done with the classification type. Don't worry about the SQL queries needed to put it all back together for the time being. Maybe it helps to think about how you might enter the data - is it a field that would have to be typed in, or could the value be chosen from a drop-down box? If so, that probably needs its own table. Sometimes it might seem a waste: for instance, there is only one author's name, so why not put the name itself in, instead of an id number to lookup the name in a table of authors? The reason is that things change, first there could be two authors with the same name, second you might get two people collaborate on a poem, third you might decide you want the author's address... in each case life is easier when the author data is in a table where it only appears once, and only the id goes in the poems table. That should keep you going another week :-) . The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM .
